• A foodborne outbreak caused by Staphylococcus aureus harboring the enterotoxin gene cluster was investigated. • A novel sequence type, ST7591, was discovered. • The genetic relationship between CC72 S. aureus from foods and patients was analyzed. This paper presented a detailed analysis of the epidemiology and molecular characteristics of staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) that occurred in a hotel in Hangzhou. A total of 46 guests at the hotel underwent an epidemiological survey. Samples of stool from patients, vomit, swabs from the kitchen, leftover food items, and anal swabs from food handlers were taken and investigated for the presence of potential pathogenic bacteria. Molecular techniques and whole genome sequencing were performed to track the evolution of Staphylococcus aureus associated with the outbreak of SFP. Forty-six individuals displayed gastrointestinal symptoms. Seventeen isolates of S. aureus were discovered to carry the seg, sei, sem, sen, seo , and selu genes found in a specific enterotoxin gene cluster (egc) operon, but without the presence of classical enterotoxins such as SEA ∼ SEE. All egc -positive isolates shared identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles and were classified under new ST7591 (Clonal Complex 72) with identical spa typing t148. In addition, some isolates of S. aureus obtained from food sources sold in Hangzhou over the past 3 years and carrying egc genes were grouped under the ST72 lineage (CC72). Through whole genome sequencing, a strong genetic connection was revealed between these egc -positive isolates and clinical ST72 S. aureus found in China. Background: To improve the diagnosis of early gastric cancer (EGC), a train-the-trainer (TTT) course was developed. This trial aimed to investigate whether TTT courses from trained trainers could improve trainees' EGC detection. Methods: In this multi-center, retrospective study, the training was carried out 8 times in one year. Clinical records one year before ("2016"), during ("2017"), and after ("2018") the course were collected. The primary endpoint was the improvement of EGC detection rate after TTT courses. Results: Twenty-four trainees from 17 hospitals were included in this study. A total of 123,416 esophagogastroduodenoscopy and 65,570 colonoscopy procedures were analyzed. The early gastric cancer detection rate (EDR) was 0.101% in 2016, which significantly increased to 0.338% in 2018 (p = 0.015). The early gastric cancer ratio (ECR, ratio of newly detected EGCs to all newly detected gastric cancers) in 2016 was 8.440%, which consistently increased to 11.853% and 19.778% in 2017 and 2018 (p = 0.006), respectively. In contrast, the advanced gastric cancer detection rate (ADR) was similar before, during, or after the course (p = 0.987). The 3-year EDR, ECR, and ADR in esophageal and colorectal cancer were not significantly different. This study investigates the impact of nano-zinc oxide (ZnO) on the self-cleaning and microstructural performance of engineered geopolymer composites (EGC) for urban cleanliness enhancement. The research focuses on achieving homogeneous dispersion of nano-ZnO through ultrasonication to prevent agglomeration and assess its effects on workability, setting time, mechanical, and microstructural properties of EGC. Results show that incorporating ZnO nanoparticles at 5 % and 10 % concentrations as a surface coating on engineered geopolymer composite creates a highly effective photocatalytic material. This enhanced composite demonstrates significant capability in degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV light exposure over a 15-day period, breaking down organic pollutants into simpler, potentially less toxic substances. The efficiency of degradation depends on factors such as nano-ZnO concentration, UV radiation intensity, and initial pollutant concentration. The optimal dosage of nano-ZnO in EGC is found to be 0.5 %, which enhances hydration and pozzolanic activity, promoting a densified microstructure at the nanoscale. This innovative composite material shows promise as a self-cleaning finishing material for urban buildings, offering potential improvements in both aesthetics and environmental sustainability. The Staphylococcal nuclease and Tudor domain containing 1 (SND1) has been identified as an oncoprotein. Our previous study demonstrated that SND1 impedes the major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) assembly by hijacking the nascent heavy chain of MHC-I to endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation. Herein, we aimed to identify inhibitors to block SND1-MHC-I binding, to facilitate the MHC-I presentation and tumor immunotherapy. Our findings validated the importance of the K490-containing sites in SND1-MHC-I complex. Through structure-based virtual screening and docking analysis, (−)-Epigallocatechin (EGC) exhibited the highest docking score to prevent the binding of MHC-I to SND1 by altering the spatial conformation of SND1. Additionally, EGC treatment resulted in increased expression levels of membrane-presented MHC-I in tumor cells. The C57BL/6J murine orthotopic melanoma model validated that EGC increases infiltration and activity of CD8+ T cells in both the tumor and spleen. Furthermore, the combination of EGC with programmed death-1 (PD-1) antibody demonstrated a superior antitumor effect. In summary, we identified EGC as a novel inhibitor of SND1-MHC-I interaction, prompting MHC-I presentation to improve CD8+ T cell response within the tumor microenvironment. In order to reduce the utilization of cement and promote the low-carbon development of construction materials, engineered geopolymer composites (EGC) offer an alternative to engineered cement composites (ECC). In this study, slag, fly ash and steel slag were innovatively combined as precursor materials to prepare EGC. The focus was laid on the influence of sodium silicate modulus (Ms) and alkali content on the mechanical and tensile properties of ternary solid waste based EGC. Four levels of Ms (1.2, 1.5, 1.8, and 2.1) and three groups of alkali content (6 %, 8 %, and 10 %) were designed in the experiments. The flowability, setting time, compressive strength, flexural strength, uniaxial-tensile performance, and carbon emissions were comprehensively studied. Results revealed that as the Ms decreased and the alkali content increased, the setting time and flowability showed a decreasing trend. With an increase in Ms, the compressive strength and flexural strength initially increased and then decreased, indicating an optimal dosage of sodium silicate modulus. Moreover, alkali content showed a positive correlation with compressive strength and flexural strength. At Ms 1.5 and alkali content 8 %, the 28-day compressive strength reached a maximum of 83.9 MPa, the 28-day flexural strength was 14.7 MPa, and the ultimate tensile strain reached 11.31 %. Epigallocatechin (EGC) is one of the main bioactive polyphenols in green tea. This study aims to determine the anti-tumor effect of EGC against colorectal cancer. Our results revealed that treatment of EGC led to significant suppression of cell proliferation and apoptosis in three colorectal cancer cells. Western blot confirmed that EGC activated Caspase-3 and PARP, down-regulated the phosphorylation of STAT3 and decreased Bcl-2 expression. Luciferase-reporter-activity assay further determined that EGC suppressed the promoter activity of STAT3 and downregulated the transcription of STAT3. Besides, in vivo study proved that EGC (100 mg/kg) resulted in significant suppression of tumor volume and tumor weight (decreased by 63.7 %) in mice bearing SW620 tumors. Tumor organoid assays demonstrated the inhibitory efficacy of EGC in colorectal organoids. In conclusion, our study present evidence that EGC inhibited colon cancer cell proliferation both in vitro and in vivo by down-regulation phosphorylated STAT3 and activated downstreams. • The volume and location of EGC is calculated to simplify the gas cloud dispersion scenarios based on the Gaussian model. • The impact of changing in external conditions on EGC is analyzed. • The flexible alarming mechanism is proposed based on EGC, to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of alarming. Gas detection system (GDS) is critical for identifying and suppressing the flammable or hazardous gas leaked by incidents. The spread of a flammable gas cloud is susceptible to external factors and highly uncertain, but the GDSs deployed today often raise alarms based on certainty. It means that the threshold value set in a GDS for triggering alarms is a constant. Such an approach sometimes cannot accurately determine the leakage location, and so it may result in a great delay of gas detection. To reduce the risk of gas leakage, this paper proposes a flexible triggering mechanism for GDSs, where an alarm is raised or not depending on the number of sensors whose reading are reaching or closing to the preset threshold. An equivalent gas cloud (EGC) model is introduced here to provide design inputs for such a flexible triggering GDS. The volume and location distribution of an EGC are estimated with the Gaussian dispersion model, based on the changes of wind speed and direction. A case study in a terminal station of LNG is conducted, to illustrate the effectiveness of the new approach. The findings show that the flexible triggering mechanism is able to make alarms of a GDS more accurate, and meanwhile avoiding unnecessary measures, which can effectively optimize alarming thresholds. Background: Rhodiola rosea has been used as a traditional medicine for a long history. Previous studies on oligomeric proanthocyanidins from Rhodiola rosea (OPCRR) have showed that it exhibited significant free radical-scavenging activities, antioxidant activities in aging mice and lipid lowering effects.Hypothesis/purpose: We hypothesized that OPCRR can improve the atherosclerosis pathological in rats. In the present study, we investigated the effects of OPCRR on the serum lipid profiles, oxidant stress status, inflammatory cytokines and atherosclerotic mediators, and endothelial dysfunction as well as changes in abdominal aorta of atherosclerosis rats.Methods: The major components of OPCRR were analyzed by using infrared spectrum and HPLC-ESI-MS. The atherosclerosis rat model was induced by high fat and vitamin D3 feeding for 9 weeks and two OPCRR doses (60 and 120 mg/kg b.w.) were orally administered daily for 9 weeks. The rats were then sacrificed and the blood was collected via abdominal aorta and serum was separated by centrifugated for biochemical analysis. Part of the aorta tissues were excised immediately for histopathological examination and western blotting.Results: Compared to model group, OPCRR treatments significantly decreased the serum lipid profiles including total cholesterol, total triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and ox-LDL and increased the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C); significant increased serum antioxidant enzymes (SOD and GSH-Px) and decrease of MDA content as a product of lipid peroxidation; lowered serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 and enhanced IL-10 level; increased the serum release of nitric oxide and expression of iNOS in aortic, whereas decreased the expression of eNOS.Conclusion: OPCRR can improve the progress of atherosclerosis by regulation of lipid metabolism, restoring of the antioxidant capacities, and attenuation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemcytokines release, and improving the endothelial dysfunction indicated by nitric oxide system. This paper proposes RSS-based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver diversity-combining techniques for identity-based attack detection. The diversity-combining techniques considered for identity-based attack detection using MIMO systems include selection combining (SLC), equal gain combining (EGC), and maximal ratio combining (MRC). First, we exploit the spatial correlation of the RSS hereditary from wireless nodes to detect identity-based attacks. Analytical expressions of the proposed method for the spatial correlation of the RSS hereditary using MIMO-combining diversities are provided and validated through simulation results. Second, we propose unsupervised machine learning (ML) algorithms such as k -means and k -medoids for the detection of identity-based attacks using RSS with different MIMO-combining diversities. Complete statistical derivations for the detection of identity-based attacks using k -means and k -medoids algorithms were performed. The simulation results confirm that the proposed techniques exploiting MIMO diversity-combining techniques for identity-based attack detection using unsupervised ML algorithms outperform the previously proposed techniques in terms of the false positive rate (FPR) and detection rate (DR). Staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) is a major foodborne illness caused by staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs). It is a well known fact that foodborne outbreak investigations are solely characterized by commercially available immunoassay kits. However, these assays encompass only few enterotoxins such as SEA-SEE which are renowned as “classical” enterotoxins and unable to detect any other novel enterotoxins even though their involvement is predicted. In this context, the present study involved development of a sandwich ELISA immunoassay for the specific detection of “non-classical” enterotoxin G (SEG). The toxin belongs to enterotoxin gene cluster ( egc ) which comprises a bunch of five toxin genes that are known to co-express. Thus, the developed assay might indirectly speculate the presence of other toxins in the cluster. The efficiency of ELISA was compared with PCR analysis where all strains possessing seg were found positive for toxin production. Additionally, analogous to other studies which reported the co-occurrence of seg and sei , the PCR analysis accomplished in the study evinced the same. The sandwich format allowed sensitive detection with a detection limit of 1 ng/mL. High specificity was achieved in presence of non-target protein as well as bacteria. Likewise, staphylococcal protein A (SpA) interference that is inevitably associated with immunoassays was eliminated by implementation of anti-SEG IgY in our study. Consequently, chicken IgY were used to capture target antigen in developed sandwich ELISA. Further, spiking studies and analysis on natural samples emphasized the robustness as well as applicability of developed method. Altogether, the established assay could be a reliable detection tool for the routine investigation of SEG as well as to predict other egc toxins in samples from food and clinical sources. • The ambient cured EGC with local PVA fiber was developed. • The impact behaviors of EGC was investigated under cold temperatures. • The influences of different parameters were discussed. This paper was intended to investigate the impact resistance of engineered geopolymer composite (EGC) in cold temperatures. The ambient cured EGC based on local PVA fibers, which has favorable environmental and economic benefits, was first developed and tested under uniaxial compressive and tensile loading conditions. The drooping hammer test machine retrofitted with a liquid nitrogen canister was applied to conduct the impact tests of EGC specimens under different cold temperatures, i.e., −10 ℃, −20 ℃ and −50 ℃. The conventional engineered cementitious composite (ECC) specimens and the corresponding cement mortar were also tested as the control groups. The influences of alkali concentrations on the compressive, tensile and impact behaviors of EGC were investigated. According to the experimental results, it was found that the developed EGC could have comparable compressive strength and tensile behaviors with ECC. For both EGC, ECC and their corresponding matrixes, the impact load increased while the ultimate displacement decreased when the temperature dropped from −10 ℃ to −50 ℃. It was also found that the energy dissipation coefficient of EGC specimens increased with the decrease of temperature, indicating that EGC materials have preferable impact resistance under low or ultra-low temperature environments. • The effect of sand-to-binder (S/B) ratio on the bond performance of EGC with concrete and steel reinforcement is reported. • Increasing the S/B ratio improves the bond strength of EGC/concrete substrates. • Direct correlation exists between elastic modulus of EGC and their bond strength with concrete substrates. Engineered geopolymer composites (EGC) have recently emerged as a greener and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional engineered cementitious composites (ECC), achieving excellent mechanical and durability properties. This study investigated the effect of sand to binder (S / B) ratio on the bond performance of EGC repair material with concrete and steel reinforcement. The S / B ratio of EGC mixes was varied from 0.3 to 1.0, and its effect on the physical and mechanical properties was evaluated. It was found that increasing the S / B ratio decreased the micro-cracks at the EGC-concrete interface and, increased the bond strength. A direct correlation was observed between the elastic modulus of EGC and its bond strength with concrete substrate. The EGC-steel rebar pull-out strength initially increased and then decreased with the S / B ratio. The EGC repair material with S / B ratio more than or equal to 0.8 achieved the minimum EGC-concrete bond strength value of 1.5 MPa, as recommended by the BSI code. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Green tea containing polyphenols exerts antidiabetic and antiobesity effects, but the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. In this study, we first analyzed and compared polyphenol compounds [epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC)] in decoction of green tea leaves versus usual green tea extracts. Second, the effects of acute (30 min) or chronic (6 weeks) oral administration of green tea decoction (GTD) on intestinal glucose absorption were studied in vitro in Ussing chamber, ex vivo using isolated jejunal loops and in vivo through glucose tolerance tests. Finally, we explore in rat model fed normal or high-fat diet the effects of GTD on body weight, blood parameters and on the relative expression of glucose transporters SGLT-1, GLUT2 and GLUT4. GTD cooked for 15 min contained the highest amounts of phenolic compounds. In fasted rats, acute administration of GTD inhibited SGLT-1 activity, increased GLUT2 activity and improved glucose tolerance. Similarly to GTD, acute administration of synthetic phenolic compounds (2/3 EGCG+1/3 EGC) inhibited SGLT-1 activity. Chronic administration of GTD in rat fed high-fat diet reduced body weight gain, circulating triglycerides and cholesterol and improved glucose tolerance. GTD-treated rats for 6 weeks display significantly reduced SGLT-1 and increased GLUT2 mRNA levels in the jejunum mucosa. Moreover, adipose tissue GLUT4 mRNA levels were increased. These results indicate that GTD, a traditional beverage rich in EGCG and EGC reduces intestinal SGLT-1/GLUT2 ratio, a hallmark of regulation of glucose absorption in enterocyte, and enhances adipose GLUT4 providing new insights in its possible role in the control of glucose homeostasis. Abstract: Genes encoding staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are carried by mobile genetic elements, and enterotoxin gene clusters (egc) are pathogenicity island-borne structures comprising several SE genes, which are frequently found among clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates. In the present study, we investigated the distribution and the genetic variability of egc loci in S. aureus strains isolated from raw milk and soft cheese in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ninety-two isolates were submitted to PCR detection of individual egc-borne SE genes (seg, sei, sem, sen, seo, seu), and egc loci were typed using PCR-RFLP. PCR products of egc positive isolates were sequenced. Ninety-one isolates harbored at least one SE gene, which generated 14 different genotypes. The sei gene was the most widely distributed (97.8%), and was found in combination with seg in 49 isolates (53.3%). Altogether, a complete set of individual egc genes was detected in 37 isolates (40%). However, egc loci were detected by PCR-RFLP in only 4 isolates, and classified as egc1 (n=2), egc3 (n=1), and egc4 (n=1). This investigation demonstrated the low occurrence of the egc in S. aureus isolated from dairy products. However, the frequency of complete sets of individual egc-borne genes reflects either the presence of these SE genes outside egc or the existence of new egc types in these strains. Abstract: Paediatric cardiac arrythmias commonly occur in the absence of structural heart disease, and are classified according to their cardiac site of origin. Although a detailed history and examination are invaluable, a correct diagnosis cannot be made unless the ECG is analysed, taking into account features specific to this age group. A 24-hour ECG recording may also be helpful. As many of these conditions have a genetic basis, a careful family history should be taken. For patients presenting acutely with haemodynamic collapse, paediatric life support measures should be instigated. For others, there is more time to undertake investigations prior to treatment. A relatively small number of agents, described here, are used in therapy, and in older children, radiofrequency ablation or fitting of a pacemaker offers a more permanent treatment. Engineered geopolymer composite (EGC) is a novel fiber reinforced geopolymeric material with ultra-high ductility, which is more eco-friendly than engineered cementitious composite (ECC) due to the substitution of cement. This paper was intended to investigate the impact behaviours of EGC exposed to elevated temperatures. The ambient cured EGC with local PVA fibers was first designed and tested under compressive and flexural loading conditions. The comparisons between ECC and EGC were made concerning the compressive and flexural behaviours. Then, the drooping hammer tests of EGC, ECC, cement and geopolymer matrixes were conducted under different environment temperatures, i.e., 50 °C, 100 °C and 150 °C. As the temperature increased from 50 °C to 150 °C, the impact resistance of cement decreased while the impact resistance of geopolymer increased gradually. It was also found that EGC has higher maximum impact load and impact duration than ECC as the environment temperature increased, indicating that EGC may be more suitable for the impact protection of structures under high temperatures. At the environment temperature of 50 °C, the energy dissipation capacity of EGC increased with the increase of alkali concentration, while the alkali concentration was recommended to be lower than 12 mol/L when the environment temperature is above 100 °C. Abstract: Catechin content of green tea drinks commercially available is reported to be very low in comparison with tea traditionally prepared, due to catechins conversion to their corresponding epimers during production. The purpose of this present study was to produce catechin-enriched tea drinks according to a two-step brewing procedure and to verify the catechin stability of those enriched drinks during storage. Those results confirmed that it is possible to produce EGC- and EGCG-enriched tea drinks regardless of the green tea used. Good extraction efficiencies were reached for the first and second extraction steps with catechin extraction yields ranging from 63.6% to 84.8%. Furthermore, it appeared that the catechin content in the two enriched tea drinks demonstrated a great stability since no significant degradation occurred within 8 weeks of storage. This simple two-step extraction procedure could be considered as an interesting way to produce enriched green tea drinks with more potent and stable bioactive catechins. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A multiplex PCR assay that allows for the rapid screening of the 19 genes that encode staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) (sea to see, and seg to sei), SE-like (SEl) toxins (sej to ser, and seu), and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) (tst) was developed in this study. These toxins are included in the pyrogenic toxin superantigen (PTSAg) family and are responsible for many diseases such as staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) and TSS. The primers were designed based on dual priming oligonucleotide (DPO) technology to detect all of the 19 SAg genes in three sets of PCR. The developed multiplex PCR was applied to 143 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from pork and chicken meat in Korea. Almost 50% of the strains possessed at least one of the 19 SAg genes. The most frequently found genes were seg, sei, sem, and sen (53 isolates, 37%), which were often found simultaneously in the same isolate. In those isolates, the seo (39 isolates, 27%) or seu (6 isolates, 4%) genes were frequently found together and this combination (seg, sei, sem, sen, and seo or seu) was considered to be a part of the enterotoxin gene cluster (egc). The sea gene (10 isolates, 7%) was the gene most frequently detected out of all the classical SE genes (sea to see). Although these classical SEs are considered to be major etiological factors in SFP, newly described SE or SEl genes (seg to ser, and seu) were more frequently detected than the classical SE genes in this study. There was no isolate detected containing the seb, sec, sek, sel, or seq genes. S. aureus possessing mobile genetic elements known to encode these SAg genes, such as egc, were presumed to be widely distributed among pork and chicken meats in Korea. Abstract: In comparison to the well-recognized adaptogenic herb Rhodiola rosea, phytochemical constituents of two other Rhodiola species (R. heterodonta and R. semenovii) were elucidated and characterized. Two major phytochemical groups; phenolic and/or cyanogenic glycosides and proanthocyanidins, were isolated and identified in the three species. Chemical similarities among the three species were observed; however, each species displayed differences in phytochemical constituents. R. heterodonta contained a newly detected phenylethanoid glycoside, heterodontoside, in addition to the known compounds tyrosol, viridoside, salidroside, and rhodiocyanoside A. Both R. heterodonta and R. rosea contained phenylethanoid/propanoid compounds that were not detected in R. semenovii. For R. semenovii, the cyanogenic glucosides rhodiocyanoside A and lotaustralin were detected. Although the three species have proanthocyanidins composed of (−)-epigallocatechin and its 3-O-gallate esters in common, the degree of polymerization greatly differed between them. In contrast to R. heterodonta and R. semenovii, R. rosea has higher molecular weight polymeric proanthocyanidins. This study resulted in the identification and isolation of phytochemical constituents for direct cross-comparison between three Rhodiola species of medicinal and pharmacological value. Abstract: Tea polyphenols have inhibitive effects for carcinogenesis. A reporter system controlled by hTERT promoter was constructed to evaluate the effects of tea polyphenols, (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and (−)-epigallocatechin (EGC) on the repression of hTERT transcription. The hTERT promoter activity was selectively repressed by 20–40μM EGCG and EGC in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Real-time RT-PCR confirmed that the endogenous hTERT mRNA level was decreased in H1299, OECM-1 and SAS cells treated with EGCG or EGC. Our results identified the repression activities of EGCG and EGC toward telomerase expression that might be linked to inhibition of carcinoma cell growth. This paper discusses the types, objectives, principles, and effects of tourism taxation. Unlike other levies, tourism taxes can increase domestic welfare since international tourists bear most of the welfare loss associated with higher revenue. Taxing products rather than tourists affects income distribution via changes in factor markets and domestic consumption, and corrects for the distortion caused by monopoly power. A computable general equilibrium analysis for Mauritius finds that taxing tourism is relatively more efficient and equitable than levying other sectors. It also finds that a narrow policy, taxing the highly tourism-intensive sectors, extracts significantly more revenue from tourists than a broader policy where all tourism-related sectors are taxed. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a widely accepted treatment option for superficial gastric neoplasia in Asia, but there are few data on outcomes of gastric ESD from North America. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of gastric ESD in North America. We analyzed data from 347 patients who underwent gastric ESD at 25 centers, from 2010 through 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, lesion characteristics, procedure details and related adverse events, treatment outcomes, local recurrence, and vital status at the last follow up. For the 277 patients with available follow-up data, the median interval between initial ESD and last clinical or endoscopic evaluation was 364 days. The primary endpoint was the rate of en bloc and R0 resection. Secondary outcomes included curative resection, rates of adverse events and recurrence, and gastric cancer-related death. Ninety patients (26%) had low-grade adenomas or dysplasia, 82 patients (24%) had high-grade dysplasia, 139 patients (40%) had early gastric cancer, and 36 patients (10%) had neuroendocrine tumors. Proportions of en bloc and R0 resection for all lesions were 92%/82%, for early gastric cancers were 94%/75%, for adenomas and low-grade dysplasia were 93%/ 92%, for high-grade dysplasia were 89%/ 87%, and for neuroendocrine tumors were 92%/75%. Intraprocedural perforation occurred in 6.6% of patients; 82% of these were treated successfully with endoscopic therapy. Delayed bleeding occurred in 2.6% of patients. No delayed perforation or procedure-related deaths were observed. There were local recurrences in 3.9% of cases; all occurred after non-curative ESD resection. Metachronous lesions were identified in 14 patients (6.9%). One of 277 patients with clinical follow up died of metachronous gastric cancer that occurred 2.5 years after the initial ESD. ESD is a highly effective treatment for superficial gastric neoplasia and should be considered as a viable option for patients in North America. The risk of local recurrence is low and occurs exclusively after non-curative resection. Careful endoscopic surveillance is necessary to identify and treat metachronous lesions. Previous studies suggested that naturally occurring EGCG primarily acted on the bacterial cell membrane then damaged the membrane and the gallate moiety in EGCG was very important to its anti-bacterial activity. However, the detailed mechanisms were still poorly understood. In this paper, EGCG and EGC were selected to study the great contribution of gallate moiety on the anti-bacterial activities of polyphenols. The results indicated that EGCG could penetrate deeper into the POPG lipid bilayer and possess more potent structure-perturbing potency on the POPG lipid bilayer than EGC. We also found that EGCG had the ability to form hydrogen bonds with the deeper inside oxygen atoms in the POPG lipid bilayer and the gallate moiety was the key functional group for EGCG forming hydrogen bonds with the POPG lipid bilayer. Moreover, results from the binding free energy analysis demonstrated that the gallate moiety made great contribution to the high affinity between EGCG and the POPG lipid bilayer. We believed that these findings could yield useful insights into the influence mechanisms of gallate moiety on the anti-bacterial activities of polyphenols.
