Treatment of dodec-6-yne with triallylmanganate in the presence of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene provides (Z)-dodec-6-ene. An addition of D2O before quenching the reaction affords the corresponding dideuterated alkene. The result suggests the existence of the manganese–alkyne complex as an intermediate. Treatment of methyl propargyl ethers as alkynes with tributylmanganate generates propargylmanganese species. The reaction of non-2-ynyl tetrahydropyran-2-yl ether with tributylmanganate provides tetradec-7-yn-1,5-diol and 6-hexylocta-6,7-dien-1,5-diol. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Direct functionalization of aromatic substituents on [28]hexaphyrin was achieved by Ir-catalyzed borylation with the Smith–Miyaura–Hartwig protocol. High para selectivity was observed in the reaction on 2,6-dichlorophenyl and 2,6-dimethoxyphenyl substituents of [28]hexaphyrin. The reaction with [26]hexaphyrin resulted only in reduction of the substrate to provide [28]hexaphyrin without borylation, thus highlighting the importance of the oxidation state of substrates in this catalytic transformation. The borylated hexaphyrin can be used for Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Treatment of chlorobis(methyldiphenylsilyl)methyllithium with vinylic Grignard reagents and CuCN·2LiCl afforded α,α-bis(silyl)-substituted allylic copper species. The reactions of the reagents with electrophiles provided a variety of 1,1-disilylalkenes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Pyrrocorphin is an air-sensitive porphyrinoid with a highly reduced hexahydroporphyrin core. In contrast, pyrrolidine-fused pyrrocorphin (Pyr) obtained by successive 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of azomethine ylide to 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin is less air-sensitive. In order to reveal the effect of highly reduced porphyrin rings on the physicochemical properties of their metal complexes, we have prepared diamagnetic (S = 0) Ni(II) complex Ni(II)(Pyr). The addition of excess pyridine (Py) to the toluene solution of Ni(II)(Pyr) yielded five-coordinate Ni(II)(Pyr)(Py), which was then completely converted to six-coordinate paramagnetic (S = 1) Ni(II)(Pyr)(Py) 2 . The latter was characterized by UV–Vis, 1 H NMR, CV, SQUID, and X-ray crystallography as well as DFT calculations. As compared with analogous complexes of porphyrin (Por), chlorin (Chl), and isobacteriochlorin (Iso) reported by Herges and co-workers (R. Herges et al., Inorg. Chem. 2015), Ni(II)(Pyr)(Py) 2 has longer equatorial Ni N and shorter axial Ni N bonds. The CV study has shown a large decrease in HOMO–LUMO gap as the reduction of porphyrin ring proceeds, which has further been confirmed by UV–Vis and DFT calculation. Titration studies using 1 H NMR and UV–Vis have shown that the first binding constant of pyridine toward Ni(II)(Pyr) is ca. 4 times as large as that of Ni(II)(Iso) and ca 230 times as large as that of Ni(II)(Por). Thus, we have concluded that the binding constant of pyridine to Ni(II) porphyrinoid increases by the following order: Por < Chl < Iso < Pyr. The high affinity of pyridine binding in Ni(II)(Pyr) was discussed both from the structural and thermodynamic point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Treatment of chlorobis(methyldiphenylsilyl)methyllithium with various alkyl and aryl Grignard reagents and CuCN·2LiCl afforded 1,1-disilylalkylcopper species. The aerobic oxidation of the resulting copper reagents provided a variety of acylsilanes in good yields. Meanwhile, treatment of dichloro(methyldiphenylsilyl)methyllithum with Bu2CuLi·LiCN provided 1-cyano-1-silylalkylcopper species via consecutive double 1,2-migration of alkyl and cyano groups. Iodine–magnesium exchange occurs upon treatment of 3-iodomethyl-1-oxacyclopentanes with alkyl Grignard reagents or trialkylmagnesate. The resulting organomagnesium compounds undergo intramolecular nucleophilic substitution in ether to afford cyclopropane skeletons in a stereoselective manner. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A gallium hydride reagent, HGaCl2, was found to act as a radical mediator. Treatment of alkyl halides with the gallium hydride reagent, generated from gallium trichloride and sodium bis(2-methoxyethoxy)aluminum hydride, provided the corresponding reduced products in excellent yields. Radical cyclization of halo acetals was also successful with not only the stoichiometric gallium reagent but also a catalytic amount of gallium trichloride combined with stoichiometric aluminum hydride as a hydride source. An indium hydride reagent, HInCl2, prepared from indium trichloride and diisobutylaluminum hydride also worked as a radical mediator. HInCl2 could reduce aryl iodides and bromides in the presence of Et3B as a radical initiator. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Alkylation of silyl enolates with tert-alkyl or allylic fluorides proceeds smoothly in the presence of a catalytic amount of boron trifluoride to afford the corresponding carbonyl compounds. Allylation and reduction of alkyl fluorides with allylsilane and hydrosilane, respectively, occur under BF3 catalysis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
