Sleep is essential to adolescent development. Sexual and gender minority (SGM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) adults are at high risk for poor sleep, partially due to minority stress (e.g., discrimination). However, sleep has rarely been studied among SGM adolescents. In a national sample of early adolescents, we analyzed sexual minority (SM) and gender minority (GM) identity, gender incongruence, and gender nonconformity in association with sleep and tested minority and general stressors as mediators. We cross-sectionally analyzed data from 10,070 adolescents aged 10–14 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ Study. Using logistic regression models, we analyzed associations between identity (SM and GM), sexual identity discrimination, minority and general stressors (sexual identity discrimination, teasing, and conflict with parents) and sleep health (duration, latency, and disturbance). We used Baron and Kenny's method to test for mediation. Participants reported sexual identity (4% SM, 4% questioning) and gender identity (0.4% GM, 0.6% questioning); 65% were White, 20% were Hispanic, and 52% were assigned male at birth. Compared to heterosexual, SM participants had higher odds of short sleep duration, long sleep latency, and sleep disturbance. GM participants and those reporting gender incongruence and nonconformity had higher odds of long sleep latency and sleep disturbance. Sexual identity discrimination and general social stressors partially mediated some associations. SGM participants reported poorer sleep. Minority and general social stressors partially accounted for some disparities. Suicide and PTSD are pressing public health issues in the US, with discrimination and potentially traumatic experiences (PTEs) influencing mental health. However, the unique effects of these factors on Multiracial/ethnic adults' PTSD and suicidal thoughts/behaviors (STB) are not thoroughly researched. Using a cross-sectional design, an online survey was conducted (N = 1012) from October to December 2022. Multivariable logistic regression models analyzed relationships between PTEs, discriminatory events, and mental health outcomes, accounting for sociodemographics. After adjusting for demographics, exposure to PTEs and discrimination correlated with heightened odds of PTSD and STB. Individual lifetime discrimination experiences and specific PTEs demonstrated varying associations with STB and PTSD. The study underscores discrimination's relevance as a risk factor. The study's cross-sectional nature restricts causality or temporality interpretations. Moreover, the convenience sample of English-speaking online participants might not be reflective of all Multiracial/ethnic US adults. Findings underscore PTEs and discrimination's interconnectedness in Multiracial/ethnic mental health outcomes. Discrimination might pose similar risks to PTEs. Acknowledging discrimination as potential precursors for PTSD and STB aids accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. To examine social class discrimination as a mediator of socioeconomic disparities in sleep outcomes in an adolescent sample. Sleep was assessed from established actigraphy (efficiency, long wake episodes, duration) and self-report (sleep/wake problems, daytime sleepiness) measures among 272 high school students in the Southeastern region of the United States (35% low income; 59% White, 41% Black, 49% female, Mean age = 17.3, SD = 0.8). Social class discrimination was assessed using a new measure, the Social Class Discrimination Scale (SCDS; 22-items), and an established measure, the Experiences of Discrimination Scale (EODS; 7-items). Socioeconomic disadvantage (SED) was measured as an aggregate of six indicators. The SCDS was associated with sleep efficiency, long wake episodes, sleep/wake problems and daytime sleepiness (but not sleep duration), and significantly mediated the socioeconomic gradient in each sleep outcome. Black males experienced higher levels of social class discrimination than Black females, White males, or White females. A race by gender moderation effect was evident for two of the five sleep outcomes (sleep efficiency and long wake episodes) suggesting a stronger association between social class discrimination and sleep problems for Black females than White females but no clear race differences among males. The EODS was not associated with objective sleep outcomes or SED but was associated with self-reported sleep and showed a similar pattern of moderation effects. Findings suggest that social class discrimination may contribute to socioeconomic disparities in sleep problems, with some variability across measures and demographic groups. Two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, asexual, and other sex, sexual, and gender identities (2SLGBTQIA+) experience minority stress processes in pharmacy settings. Processes may be distal (objective prejudicial events) or proximal (subjective internalized feelings) and lead to delay or avoidance of care. The nature of these experiences in pharmacies and ways to reduce occurrence is largely unknown. This study aimed to characterize 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals' perceived experiences in pharmacies according to the minority stress model (MSM) and to elicit patient-identified individual, interpersonal, and systemic strategies for reducing systemic oppression of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in pharmacy practice. This was a qualitative phenomenological study using semistructured interviews. Thirty-one 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals from the Canadian Maritime provinces completed the study. Transcripts were coded according to domains of the MSM (distal and proximal processes) and the lens of systemic oppression (LOSO) (individual, interpersonal, and systemic factors). Framework analysis was used to identify themes within each theoretical domain. Distal and proximal minority stress processes were described by 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in pharmacy settings. Distal processes included direct and indirect perceived discrimination and microaggressions. Proximal processes included expectation of rejection, concealment, and internalized self-stigma. Nine themes were identified according to the LOSO. Two related to the individual (knowledge and abilities, respect), 2 related to interpersonal relations (rapport and trust, holistic care), and 5 related to systemic factors (policies and procedures, representation and symbols, training/specialization, environment/privacy, technology). Findings support the notion that individual, interpersonal, and systemic strategies can be implemented to reduce or prevent minority stress processes from occurring in pharmacy practice. While individuals at clinical high-risk (CHR) for psychosis experience higher levels of discrimination than healthy controls, it is unclear how these experiences contribute to the etiology of attenuated positive symptoms. The present study examined the association of perceived discrimination with positive symptoms in a cohort from the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study (NAPLS2). It predicted that CHR individuals will report higher levels of lifetime and past year perceived discrimination related to their race and ethnicity (ethnoracial discrimination) and that this form of discrimination will be significantly associated with baseline positive symptoms. Participants included 686 CHR and 252 healthy controls. The present study examined data from the perceived discrimination (PD) scale, the Brief Core Schema Scale, and the Scale for the Psychosis-Risk Symptoms. Structural equation modeling was employed to examine whether negative schema of self and others mediated the relation of past year ethnoracial PD to baseline suspiciousness symptoms. CHR individuals report higher levels of past year and lifetime PD compared to healthy controls. Lifetime ethnoracial PD was associated with suspiciousness and total positive symptoms. Negative schema of self and others scores partially mediated the relation of past year ethnoracial PD to suspiciousness, one of five positive symptom criteria for CHR. For CHR individuals, past year ethnoracial discrimination was associated with negative beliefs about themselves and others, which was associated with suspiciousness. Although people living with CF (PLwCF) commonly report pain and other symptoms, little is known regarding their experiences of living with and accessing treatment for burdensome symptoms. PLwCF completed online questionnaires assessing symptom prevalence and distress and were also asked about experiences accessing pain and symptom treatment, using both closed-ended and free-text entries. Pain was the most prevalent symptom experienced among the 55 participants (76%) and the symptom that most commonly caused distress (64%). PLwCF not on CFTR modulator therapy were likelier to endorse pain as distressing (p = 0.007). Respondents expressed that their pain was commonly underrecognized and undermanaged, they desired a multi-modal approach to treatment, and noted concerns about disease progression affecting their symptom management options. Background: Discrimination experiences have been documented in various health care settings; little is known about discrimination experiences in the community pharmacy setting.Objectives: This study aimed to (1) describe perceived everyday discrimination, including racial discrimination, in community pharmacies, (2) examine factors associated with perceived everyday discrimination, (3) examine the relationship between perceived racial discrimination and delays in picking up prescriptions, and (4) examine the relationship between perceived racial discrimination and forgoing prescriptions.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2021 with a U.S. Qualtrics research panel. The 9-item Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) was used to assess perceived discrimination (range 9-45, higher scores indicate higher perceived discrimination). One question asked whether respondents perceived racial discrimination. Two questions asked whether respondents delayed or forwent getting a prescription(s) in the past year. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all variables. A generalized linear model examined factors associated with perceived discrimination; logistic regression examined the relationships between perceived racial discrimination and delays in getting or forgoing prescription(s).Results: Participants (n = 578) were 40.2 (±16.5) years old. Most were white (55.5%), 24.4% were black, and 29.4% were Hispanic or Latino. The mean EDS score was 16.5 (±8.8); 18.7% perceived racial discrimination. Overall, 36.3% and 33.0% reported a delay in getting and forgoing their prescriptions, respectively. Age (P < 0.0001), sexual identity or orientation (P = 0.010), ethnicity (P = 0.049), annual income (P = 0.012), and prescription insurance (P = 0.008) were associated with perceived discrimination. Those with perceived racial discrimination had significantly higher odds of a delay in getting their prescription(s) than those without perceived racial discrimination (odds ratio 2.6 [95% CI 1.3-5.3]).Conclusions: Study findings elucidate discrimination experiences in the community pharmacy and the impact of racial discrimination on individuals' decision in obtaining their medications in a timely manner. 1. Describe the relationship between physician implicit racial bias, communication behavior and patient and family outcomes including perceived discrimination and feeling heard and understood. 2. Select appropriate communication outcomes to target for communication interventions aimed at increasing health equity in end-of-life care. Understanding the relationship between physician implicit racial bias, communication behavior and patient and family perceived discrimination in end-of-life communication will help identify communication outcomes, such as verbal dominance, that interventions should target. Implicit racial bias affects patient-provider communication which may contribute to disparities in burdensome end-of-life care. We examined the relationship between physicians' implicit racial bias and paraverbal communication behaviors and between those behaviors and perceived discrimination in a simulated end-of-life communication. Physicians completed a 20-minute videotaped simulated goals of care discussion with a Black actor portraying a patient's daughter. The patient was a 70-year-old woman with advanced metastatic lung cancer and acute respiratory failure. Physicians completed the Implicit Association Test (IAT) for racial bias after the simulation. Actors completed the Discrimination in Medical Settings Scale and a single-item measure of feeling Heard and Understood. Two investigators coded paraverbal communication (including verbal dominance as a ratio of physician to actor speech time) from videotaped encounters. Of 43 physicians, 22 (51%) were female, 22 (51%) White, 17 (40%) Asian, 4 (9%) Hispanic and 1 (2%) Black. 8 were oncologists (19%), 15 intensivists (35%), 16 internists (37%), and 4 geriatricians (9%). Two did not complete the IAT. Average IAT-D score was 0.31 (SD 0.51). Physicians paused on average 4.6 times (SD 4.5) and interrupted 1.3 times (SD 1.8) per encounter. Average speech rate was 149.9 syllables per minute (SD 17.2). Average verbal dominance was 2.19 (range 1.04, 5.78). Average Heard and Understood score was 3.7 (SD 1.2), and Discrimination was 1.6 (SD 0.8) (scale of 1-5 for both). There were no significant correlations between IAT-D score and any paraverbal communication behaviors. Verbal dominance correlated with increased perceived discrimination (r=0.64, p< 0.01) and lower ratings of feeling heard and understood (r=-0.36, p< 0.05). Implicit racial bias was not correlated with paraverbal communication behaviors. Verbal dominance was highly correlated with perceived discrimination. Understanding which behaviors correlate with perceptions of discrimination will help identify communication outcomes, such as verbal dominance, that should be targeted by interventions. Second-generation Muslims who follow their faith and feel discriminated against tend to maintain their heritage culture and distance themselves from the culture of the country where they grew up, setting the conditions for psychosocial maladjustment. Yet some second generation do find ways to adopt the mainstream culture while remaining attached to their heritage culture. To explain these contradictory observations, we investigated how second-generation Muslims manage to be part of both mainstream and heritage culture although their religion is commonly regarded as incompatible with Western values. To do this, we examined the role of flexibility in existential quest (EQ) in the acculturation of second-generation Muslims. Our hypothesis was that second generation integration is fostered by their ability to be flexible on EQ, which allows them to reflect on cultural and religious issues and to create a safe psychological place where they can practice their faith without feeling they need to withdraw from mainstream society. Two samples of second-generation Muslims, one from Italy (N = 240) and one from Belgium (N = 209), completed an online questionnaire. A multi-group structural equation model was tested. Religiosity, perceived discrimination, and sociodemographic variables were also considered. We noted a positive association between EQ and mainstream culture only for the Italian sample. Our findings suggest that flexibility on EQ is one aspect of the acculturation of second-generation Muslims and that it can provide a resource for coping with the challenge of growing up under dual cultural pressures. Emerging research from the United States indicates that people with an East Asian background experience COVID-19-related racial discrimination. There is some (although not consistent) evidence that these discrimination experiences can in turn have psychological and behavioral consequences, such as strengthening one's ethnic identity and influencing parents' ethnic-racial socialization practices. The current study presents a unique natural experiment examining self-reported perceived discrimination experiences, ethnic identity, and ethnic-racial socialization among 80 Chinese immigrant mothers in the Netherlands before and after the COVID-19 outbreak (39 mothers recruited before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and 41 during). The main findings from our exploratory analyses indicated an impact of the pandemic with higher (subtle) discrimination and stronger ethnic identity among Chinese immigrant mothers living in the Netherlands, highlighting how personal experiences related to intergroup processes have changed as a result of the COVID-19 crisis in the European context. Perceived discrimination, intergroup contact and acceptance are often encountered during acculturation processes. Based on large-scale survey data collected in the Netherlands among Antillean-Dutch, Moroccan-Dutch, Surinamese-Dutch, and Turkish-Dutch immigrant groups, relations were tested between acculturation antecedents (perceived discrimination, intergroup contact, and perceived acceptance), mediating conditions (cultural maintenance and cultural adoption), and acculturation outcomes (psychological and sociocultural outcomes). Confirmatory factor analyses pointed to adequate psychometric qualities for all concepts in the total group and to invariance in the four Dutch immigrant groups. Structural equation modeling revealed a very good fit for our model in the total group and the four immigrant groups. The acculturation model captured similar experiences, notwithstanding the different cultural backgrounds of the four groups. Experiencing discrimination had a direct negative effect on sociocultural and psychological outcomes such as well-being, and indirectly via cultural adoption. The frequency of immigrants' contacts with various groups positively affected adopting the new culture and maintaining their own. This implies both attitudes are needed, that is, appreciating their background culture while also having a positive attitude toward Dutch society and more confidence in sociocultural skills. Surinamese-Dutch appeared to best fit the described acculturation process. However, there were also some differential effects. For example, for the Turkish-Dutch group, experiencing more discrimination did not result in a more negative attitude toward Dutch society. In addition, for Antillean-Dutch the frequency of contact with various cultures had no direct effect on mediating conditions. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in rates of suicide-related thoughts and behaviors among Latinx young adults. Given Latinx young adults are one of the fastest growing subgroups in the United States, this raises significant public health concern. Perceived discrimination has consistently been identified as a risk factor and has been positively associated with depressive symptoms, further exacerbating risk for the development of suicide-related thoughts and behaviors. Critical to understanding Latinx mental health is familismo, a core cultural value that entails connectedness, dedication, commitment, and loyalty to family. Moreover, it involves seeking family for advice and support. The current study sought to examine depressive symptoms as mediator for the relation between perceived discrimination and suicide-related thoughts and behaviors while investigating familismo as a moderator in attenuating these relations within a college aged Latinx sample (N = 1037, 75.3% female, Mage = 21, SD = 4.49). Across models, depressive symptoms explained the relation between perceived discrimination and suicide-related thoughts and behaviors (p ≤0.001-0.024) with familismo significantly acting as moderator (p = .009). In exploring the protective effects of an important Latinx cultural value on a growing public health disparity, the current study provides novel insight that may be used to tailor and adapt current intervention and prevention efforts for Latinx young adults at risk for suicide-related thoughts and behaviors. As society becomes increasingly diverse over time, the interaction among different cultural groups is an essential topic in intercultural research. Berry (2017) proposed three hypotheses of intercultural relations: multiculturalism, contact, and integration, in trying to answer the question, "How shall we all live together?". Since most studies on intercultural relations are conducted in the context of Western culture, less empirical evidence about the three hypotheses examination is drawn from the plural societies other than Western ones. Therefore, this study evaluates three hypotheses on intercultural relations with regards to Filipino immigrants in Macau, and expects to provide new empirical research support for testing relevant hypotheses on intercultural relations and enrich the existing literature. A total of 233 community samples (58.5 % females; M age = 28.24) were recruited and employed scales from the MIRIPS questionnaire to collect data on co-ethnic contact, host contact, perceived discrimination, acculturation strategies, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. Path analysis revealed that: (1) With respect to the multicultural hypothesis, perceived discrimination was positively related with integration and separation; (2) With respect to the contact hypothesis, co-ethnic contact was positively related with perceived discrimination; co-ethnic contact was positively related with integration and separation, and host contact was positively related with assimilation; (3) With respect to the integration hypothesis, integration was the most preferred strategy for the participants and was associated with better psychological adaptation (termed self-esteem and life satisfaction). Racial and gender differences in the effects of discrimination on health are well-established. The evidence has derived largely from studies of older adults, with less attention paid to younger adults. The current study takes an intersectional approach to address this gap. Using nationally representative, longitudinal data from the 2017 and 2019 Panel Study of Income Dynamics Transitioning to Adulthood Supplement (PSID-TAS), we assess the effects of everyday discrimination on psychological distress among Black and White young adults aged 18–28 (n = 3894). We examine cumulative discrimination and individual items of the cumulative measure based on the Everyday Discrimination Scale. The analysis reveals that perceived discrimination is positively associated with psychological distress for each race-gender group. However, the magnitude of the association varied by group and dimension of discrimination. Black men and women reported more frequent experiences of each type of discrimination than their White counterparts. The positive association between discrimination and distress, however, was lower for Black men and women relative to White men— suggesting that White men may be more sensitive to and/or less resilient against the effects of perceived discrimination. In contrast, associations for White women did not differ significantly from those of White men. Our findings demonstrate that the health-harming effects of discrimination on psychological distress begin early in the life course and suggest that resilience-based coping mechanisms found in older samples of Black adults may also exist for younger adults. • Negative effects of discrimination on mental health for young adults are understudied. • Health-harming effects of discrimination for young adults vary by race and gender. • Perceived discrimination increased psychological distress for all race-gender groups. • However, the rate of increase was lower for Black men and women than White men. • Resilient coping found among older Black adults may also exist in young adulthood. Electronic cigarettes (also termed e-cigarette or vapes) often contain nicotine, an addictive psychoactive substance, which can have harmful effects during adolescence. Frequent experiences of discrimination are one risk factor shown to increase susceptibility to tobacco use, especially for individuals that identify as a social minority. Applying Intersectionality Theory, this research examined the relationship between youth experiences of discrimination and vape use at the intersection of race/ethnicity and sexual orientation. Cross-sectional survey data from 4747 youth (ages 12–17) that participated in the 2022 Teens, Nicotine, and Tobacco Project (TNT) online survey were used to evaluate the impact of discrimination on vape use for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or queer/questioning (LGBQ+) youth of color. Multivariable regression analyses showed that identifying as both a sexual and racial/ethnic minority was a risk factor for experiencing discrimination. Frequent discrimination and reporting discrimination due to sexual orientation was associated with a greater likelihood of ever and current vaping. Path models supported that discrimination mediated the relationship between intersectional identity and vape use. LGBQ+ youth of color reported more frequent discrimination, which was associated with a greater likelihood of ever/current vape use. Intersectionality Theory aids in understanding how discrimination can exacerbate tobacco-related disparities for youth with multiple minority identities. Findings corroborate the importance of measuring discrimination in public health surveys. Research has documented how groups cope with perceived discrimination by enhancing their identification with their minority ingroup and reducing their identification with the majority outgroup. However, these patterns have not been consistent across contexts nor examined in relation to discrimination encountered online. Through a survey of PRC Chinese immigrants in Singapore, we examine how online perceived discrimination relates to attitudes toward the Singaporean host society via both ingroup and outgroup identification. We also test the role of intergroup mobility, the perceived level of opportunity ingroup members have to form relationships with dominant outgroup members, as a moderator of these relations. Results show that PRC Chinese immigrants who perceived more discrimination online identified more strongly with both their PRC Chinese ingroup and the Singaporean host society outgroup. In turn, greater PRC Chinese and Singaporean identification related to more positive attitudes toward Singaporeans. Moreover, intergroup mobility moderated these associations, such that the PRC Chinese who perceived greater mobility were more likely to strengthen their identification with Singaporeans as their online perceived discrimination increased. This paper presents findings on Middle Eastern immigrant entrepreneurs in Australia. The extent to which perceived discrimination and acculturation influence their social and psychological capital, and the effects of social and psychological capital on their firm performance, are explored. We found that such immigrants, who are highly acculturated to the mainstream culture, not only tend to have many social interactions outside their community but also possess strong psychological capital. Although perceived discrimination has been associated with low social involvement outside an immigrant community, we found that perceived discrimination does not exert a statistically significant effect on psychological capital. Importantly, both social and psychological capital are found to exert positive effects on firm performance. The findings have implications for enhancing the capacity of policy makers to provide high impact to immigrant entrepreneurs. Background: Mental health disorders are prevalent among college students in the US. Perceived discrimination is a known risk factor for adverse mental health and is widespread on college campuses.Methods: We estimated the association between perceived discrimination and mental health among US college students using the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA), a large national cross-sectional survey of college students.Results: 7.9% of students reported experiences of discrimination, and that discrimination was more common among minority students. Perceived discrimination was associated with 86 excess cases of students reporting being too depressed to function per 1000 students, and 27 excess cases of students reporting seriously considering suicide per 1000 students. Students who experienced discrimination had a 37% increase in the number of mental health symptoms (IRR 1.37 [95% CI 1.35, 1.39], P < .0001) compared to non-discriminated students, and a 94% increase in the number of mental health diagnoses (IRR 1.94 [95% CI 1.89, 1.99], P < .0001). Discrimination was positively associated with all mental health symptoms and diagnoses. This pattern was largely held across sub-analyses by race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, but with varying magnitudes.Limitations: Inability to distinguish between the forms of discrimination experienced, whether involving gender, sexual orientation, or race/ethnicity.Conclusions: Consequences of perceived discrimination are of clinical relevance for healthcare providers in general and mental health providers in particular. Terrorism in the name of Islam has become a pressing international problem. In Spain, research that enquires into the views of Muslims in order to analyse this phenomenon is thin on the ground. Accordingly, this study employs a quantitative methodology to examine the perception of personal discrimination and collective injustice among the Muslim community in Spain, as well as their views on terrorism in the name of Islam and its prevention in the socio-educational realm. To this end, a specially designed questionnaire was administered to a representative sample of 1157 first- and second-generation Muslim immigrants and converts. For the data analysis, descriptive, correlational and inferential statistics were employed, plus stepwise multiple regression models. The results reveal a high level of perceived personal discrimination, especially of the religious kind, and collective injustice, which is most worrying among second-generation Muslims. The respondents also overwhelmingly believed that injustices committed against Muslims did not justify the use of violence. Neither perceived personal discrimination, nor perceived collective injustice, nor a greater religiosity is associated with the greater likelihood of justifying violence. Lower academic qualifications, the feeling of not belonging to Spain or their country of origin or that of their parents, giving more importance to Islam in their lives and being unemployed are indeed associated with it. Certainly, there is a need for gaining a deeper understanding of Islam and for involving the Muslim collective in the conception, elaboration and implementation of these preventive measures. Objective: To determine whether structural and individual forms of stigma are associated with neurodevelopment in children.Method: Stigma related to gender, race, and Latinx ethnicity was measured at the structural level using objective state-level indicators of social policies and prejudicial attitudes and at the individual level using self-reports of perceived discrimination. Respective associations of stigma with hippocampal volume and amygdala reactivity to threat were examined using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 11,534, mean age 9.9 years), the first multisite neuroimaging study that provided substantial variability in sociopolitical contexts and that included individual-level measures of stigma among youth.Results: In a preregistered analysis, Black (B = -58.26, p = .023) and Latinx (B = -40.10, p = .044) youths in higher (vs lower) structural stigma contexts were found to have smaller hippocampal volume, controlling for total intracranial volume, demographics, and family socioeconomic status. This association was also observed at a trend-level among girls (p = .082). The magnitude of the difference in hippocampal volume between high and low structural stigma states was equivalent to the predicted impact of a $20,000 difference in annual family income in this sample. As hypothesized, structural stigma was not associated with hippocampal volume in nonstigmatized youths, providing evidence of specificity. Perceived discrimination was unrelated to hippocampal volume in stigmatized groups. No associations between perceived discrimination or structural stigma and amygdala reactivity to threat were observed.Conclusion: This study provides novel evidence that an objective measure of structural stigma may be more strongly related to hippocampal volume than subjective perceptions of stigma, suggesting that contextual approaches to stigma could yield new insights into neurodevelopment among marginalized youth. This study explores user perception, the use of an academic library, and the correlation between user perception and library use. The findings indicate that the academic library is a preferred place to study and spend time during non-class times on campus. The frequent user activities in the library included individual study, reading, computer use, finding information, group study, using reference and information services, and meeting and socializing. The correlation between library use and each of the user activities was examined. The findings suggest that users perceive the academic library primarily as a place for learning and information seeking. The study shows how users perceive and use the academic library, and provides insights into how libraries can strengthen their place and advance their role in the academic community. Many have found racial differences in clinician-patient communication using validated codebooks that represent effective communication. No codebooks used for examining racial differences, however, have included patient input. In this paper, we describe creating codebook with Black patient advocates to determine if we could reliably code discriminatory/valuing communication and assess racial differences in these behaviors. We created a codebook for discriminatory/valuing communication behaviors with the input of Black patient advocates. We used the codebook to analyze data from 101 audio recorded encounters between White cardiologists and Black and White patients. We examined the differences in the prevalence of behaviors in cardiology encounters. In comparison to White patients, cardiologists made fewer tailoring statements to their Black patients (68% vs. 49%, p = 0.07). Coders found 4 instances of stereotyping behaviors and only Black patients (p = 0.12). We found no significant associations between any of the other outcomes and patient race. Black patients had a lower incidence of tailoring statements (p = 0.13), lower incidence of interrupting statements (p = 0.16), and higher rushed global score (p = 0.14). We found that coders can reliably identify discriminatory/valuing behaviors in cardiology encounters. The aim of this programmatic article is to spell out a three-method design for supporting micro-to-macro explanations based on social mechanisms. In this design, the experimental method is called on to strengthen the explanatory basis of the common survey-interview mix, against the background of growing interest in causal inference and experimentation across the social sciences. The proposal is articulated through the specific problem of the contribution of discrimination (micro process) to the generation of inequalities in mental health (macro outcome) between culturally stigmatized and non-stigmatized groups (macro predictor). The article motivates the research problem and the three-method design, offering a detailed discussion of the limitations of survey-based measures of perceived discrimination. Drawing on the literature on mixed methods, the relationships between the survey, the interview-based study and the field experiment are analyzed in terms of triangulation, development, and complementarity. Loneliness is a major public health concern, yet little is known in migrants. Therefore, understanding the risk factors for loneliness is relevant. The current study explores acculturation and sociocultural adaptation factors predicting loneliness regarding immigration. While little previous research has examined sociocultural adaptation as a mediator intervening between other predictors and psychological adaptation, this study tested the mediating role of sociocultural adaptation between perceived discrimination and loneliness. Cross-sectional data on 418 Cape Verdean immigrants (47.4% women) with an average age of 35 years were analyzed. The average length of living in Portugal was 18 years. Participants completed scales to evaluate acculturation strategies, ethnic identity, perceived discrimination, sociocultural adaptation, and a short form of the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-6). As expected, the results showed that greater levels of integration, greater ethnic identity, and lower perceived discrimination were related to lower levels of loneliness. Furthermore, our findings suggest that sociocultural adaptation indeed mediates the relationship between perceived discrimination and loneliness. Despite low levels of perceived discrimination experienced by Cape Verdean immigrants in Portugal, this antecedent plays an essential role in their experience of loneliness. Objective: Black youth experience racial discrimination at high rates. This study sought to further understand the longitudinal effects of racial discrimination on the mental health of Black youth by examining cross-lagged associations between perceived racial discrimination and depressive symptoms at the between-person (interindividual) level and the within-person (intraindividual) level.Method: A group of 346 Black youths (mean age 10.9 years) from the rural southern United States reported racial discrimination and depressive symptoms 4 times over 24.5 months. A cross-lagged panel model was used to examine between-person concurrent and lagged effects, and a random intercept cross-lagged panel model was used to examine within-person concurrent and lagged effects.Results: There were significant concurrent associations at all waves in both models. Additionally, there were significant lagged effects from perceived racial discrimination to depressive symptoms, but not from depressive symptoms to perceived racial discrimination, in both models.Conclusion: Youth experiencing higher levels of racial discrimination subsequently develop more depressive symptoms than youth experiencing less discrimination (between-person effects), and youth experiencing higher levels of discrimination relative to their own average subsequently report increases in depressive symptoms (within-person effects). These findings provide a rigorous test of conceptual models outlining the harmful effects of racial discrimination on mental health, add to a growing body of work documenting these effects on Black youth, and underscore the need for systemic changes to reduce the amount of discrimination Black youth experience and for interventions to promote resilience among Black youth in the face of cultural marginalization. Discrimination has a negative impact on minority group members' wellbeing, particularly immigrants. Yet, empirical research investigating coping mechanisms against perceived discrimination among immigrants remains scarce. The present study examined the association between perceived ethnic discrimination and eudaimonic (psychological and social) wellbeing among immigrants by assessing the role of intergroup (downward and upward) and intrapersonal (temporal) comparisons as coping mechanisms in this association. Using a representative sample comprising five foreign-born immigrant groups (N = 1250) in Spain, we found that immigrants tend to engage in more favorable downward and upward intergroup comparisons in response to perceived discrimination, but lower temporal intrapersonal comparisons. Downward intergroup comparison was related to lower psychological wellbeing and upward intergroup comparison was associated with higher psychological wellbeing. Temporal intrapersonal comparison was predominately predictive of psychological and social wellbeing. Perceived ethnic discrimination (PED) is thought to underlie increased prevalence of depressed mood in ethnic minorities. Depression is associated with increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic activity. We investigated a biopsychosocial model linking PED, disrupted sympathovagal balance and depressed mood. Baseline data of HELIUS, a cohort study on health among a multi-ethnic population, was used. Heart rate variability (HRV), baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), PED (evaluated with the Everyday Discrimination Scale) and presence of depressed mood (evaluated with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9) were assessed. Associations of PED, HRV/BRS and depressed mood were analyzed with linear and logistic regression analyses. Mediation of the association of PED and depressed mood by HRV/BRS was assessed in a potential outcomes model and four steps mediation analysis. Of 9492 included participants, 14.7% fulfilled criteria for depressed mood. Higher PED was associated with depressed mood (P <.001). Lower autonomic regulation indexes were associated with depressed mood (deltaR2 = 0.4–1.1%, P <.001) and at most weakly with PED (deltaR2 = 0.2–0.3%, P <.001). A very modest mediating effect by HRV/BRS in the association between PED and depressed mood was attenuated after adjustment for socioeconomic status. To conclude, we found no support for the hypothesis that autonomic regulation relevantly mediates the association between PED and depression. • In a large multi-ethnic cohort, lower HRV and BRS indicating increased sympathetic tone were associated with depressed mood. • Lower HRV and BRS were at most weakly associated with perceived ethnic discrimination. • No evidence that autonomic dysregulation in response to ethnic discrimination relevantly increases chance of depressed mood. Due to complex social, political and economic causes, Venezuela has encountered difficulties managing the Covid-19 pandemic. Although a vaccination program has started, it is still comparatively slow and largely inefficient. One particular challenge has been vaccine hesitancy. Venezuelan policymakers have traditionally not rendered much attention to ethnic disparities. In this study, we assess whether vaccine hesitancy varies across ethnic groups, in a sample of 273 Venezuelan university students. Results come out showing that marginalized ethnic groups in Venezuela are more prone to vaccine hesitancy, and also have greater levels of acceptance regarding conspiracy theories. Coefficients of correlation of ethnic discrimination with vaccine hesitancy and conspiracy beliefs are moderate. Coefficients of correlation of paranoid ideation with vaccine hesitancy and conspiracy beliefs are weak. Many Latinas/os in the United States participated in the protests and rallies (i.e., collective action) to support immigrants' rights that followed Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. President in 2017. Following the rejection-identification and rejection-disidentification models, we examined whether perceived personal discrimination, panethnic (i.e., Hispanic or Latina/o) identification, and national (i.e., American) identification were associated with greater likelihood of having engaged in collective action to support immigrants' rights among a national sample of Latinas/os in the United States (N = 1,501). We found support for the rejection-disidentification model. Perceived personal discrimination was associated with lower national identification. Latinas/os who reported lower national identification, in turn, were more likely to have reported participating in collective action to support immigrants' rights. We found less support for the rejection-identification model. Perceived personal discrimination was not associated with higher (pan)ethnic identification, although (pan)ethnic identification was positively associated with collective action. We consider the implications of these results for the rejection-identification and rejection-disidentification models and emphasize the importance of attending to U.S. Latinas/os' multiple identities. Background: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the effect of physical activity (PA) on the relationship between perceived racial discrimination and major depressive disorder (MDD) in African Americans.Methods: 645 African Americans (mean age 45 years) were interviewed on their perceived racial discrimination, PA, and past 12-month MDD. Participants were categorized into tertiles (lower, middle, upper) of racial discrimination as well as "active" or "inactive" groups based on the US PA guidelines. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for MDD prevalence across discrimination tertiles stratified by PA group after adjusting for potential confounders.Results: The upper (higher) discrimination group had 2.99 (95% CIs 1.03-8.67) increased odds of MDD compared with the lower group after adjusting for potential confounders. The stratified analysis indicated that the increased odds of MDD in the upper discrimination group were observed only among the inactive group (5.19 [1.08-24.87]) after adjusting for age and sex. The association between discrimination and MDD was not significant among active participants.Limitations: Limitations include generalizability since participants were predominantly women and recruited solely from Iowa or Georgia; the low number of MDD cases in some groups; and that causation cannot be inferred from this cross-sectional study.Conclusion: Not meeting the PA guidelines may be associated with higher depression among African Americans experiencing higher levels of perceived racial discrimination. The current study explores individual differences in the readaptation processes of Turkish return migrants from Western Europe, and investigates the roles that personality, satisfaction with life in the migration context, perceived discrimination, ethnic identity, and demographic variables play in the psychological and sociocultural adjustment of returnees. The factors predicting better psychological and sociocultural adaptation of returnees, and the factors causing them to have intention to remigrate to Europe, were scrutinized. The study involved 184 individuals, aged 15–72 years (M = 42), from three generations. Forty percent of returnees reported that they have intention to remigrate to Europe, this intention being predicted by host country ethnic identity and sense of belonging. Neuroticism, perceived discrimination and senses of belonging were found to be the main predictors of the psychosocial readaptation of Turkish migrants. The mediation analysis showed that psychological adaptation mediated the effect of sociocultural adaptation on the general wellbeing of return migrants. This paper reports a quantitative investigation of the antecedents and consequences of misrecognition for group relations. Moreover, as we simultaneously take into account effects associated with perceived discrimination, we are able to show the added value of attending to the experience of misrecognition as a predictor of outcomes relevant to intergroup relations. The sample comprised 368 Dutch participants with an Antillean (n = 126), Chinese (n = 118), or Surinamese (n = 124) ethnic background. Results indicated that those who identified strongly with their ethnic group and who perceived other (so-called 'native') Dutch people as having negative perceptions of their ethnic group, reported greater levels of misrecognition and discrimination. In turn, higher levels of misrecognition and perceived discrimination were associated with participants reporting lower levels of Dutch identification, lower levels of trust in Dutch authorities, and a greater willingness to exhibit collective action on behalf of their ethnic group. Specifically, misrecognition was more strongly associated with Dutch identification and trust in Dutch authorities, while perceived discrimination was more strongly associated with collective action tendencies. These findings point to the practical and theoretical importance of misrecognition: Both the experience of discrimination and misrecognition are relevant to understanding the sustainable integration of ethnic minorities in multi-cultural societies. Social anxiety among parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a critical issue because it could lead to adverse consequences for psychological and social functioning. Research shows that there is a positive correlation between perceived discrimination and social anxiety. Affiliate stigma and low levels of perceived social support, which may stem from experiences of discrimination, can produce negative emotions, such as social anxiety. Additionally, the negative effects of affiliate stigma on perceived social support have also been documented. Therefore, this study explored the mediating role of affiliate stigma and perceived social support between perceived discrimination and social anxiety among parents of children with ASD in China. 396 parents of children with ASD participated in a cross-sectional online survey that included measures of perceived discrimination, affiliate stigma, perceived social support, and social anxiety. The results were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 26.0. (1) Perceived discrimination, affiliate stigma, and perceived social support were significantly correlated with the social anxiety of parents of children with ASD; (2) Affiliate stigma and perceived social support may mediate the association between perceived discrimination and social anxiety, respectively; (3) Affiliate stigma and perceived social support may mediate the relationship between perceived discrimination and social anxiety. The findings suggest that experiences of discrimination by parents of children with ASD are associated with relatively high affiliate stigma and lower perceived social support, which may contribute to social anxiety. The experience of perceived ethnic discrimination is prevalent and has harmful effects across various behavioral health processes among Latinx persons. Yet, there is limited work on the association between perceived ethnic discrimination and smoking among this health disparities group. Building from initial work that has demonstrated a relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination and smoking abstinence expectancies, the present study sought to explore mechanisms by which perceived ethnic discrimination may be related to cigarette dependence. Specifically, we tested the indirect effect of perceived ethnic discrimination on cigarette dependence through smoking abstinence expectancies (i.e., negative mood, somatic symptoms, harmful consequences, and positive consequences) among Latinx persons who smoke (N = 338; M age = 35.53 years; SD = 8.65; age range 18–61; 37.3% female). Results indicated that abstinence expectancies related to harmful consequences was a statistically significant underlying factor between the experience of perceived discrimination and cigarette dependence (b = 0.39, SE = 0.16, CI95% = 0.08, 0.71, CSE = 0.14). Overall, the present study suggests that smoking abstinence expectancies pertaining to harmful consequences may be a point of intervention for Latinx persons seeking to reduce or quit smoking. Future research is needed to extend the generalizability of these findings by corroborating the mediational role of abstinence expectancies related to harmful consequences across Latinx persons of varying cigarette use severity levels over time. Objective: To better understand the experiences of female and underrepresented minority (URM) medical students pursuing urology and determine if discrimination was perceived at any point during the application process.Methods: After the rank list submission deadline (January 2, 2020), we emailed an anonymous survey to all 353 applicants to our institution for the 2020 AUA Residency Match (80.0% of applicants nationally). The survey inquired about their experiences pursuing urology and the residency match process. Ordinal regression models were used to identify any significant predictors of survey responses.Results: One hundred ninety applicants (136 male [72%], 54 female [28%]) completed the survey. A significantly higher percentage of females vs males noted discrimination (odds ratio: 2.53; confidence interval: 1.37-4.74, Fig. 1). URM students also reported higher frequencies of discrimination than non-URM students (odds ratio: 2.27; confidence interval: 1.07-4.83). Thirty-two percent of respondents tested positive on the Maslach Burnout Inventory; we did not identify any predictors of burnout. Higher proportions of female residents, faculty and leadership at a particular program had a more favorable impact on the rank lists of female applicants compared with males. Higher proportions of URM residents, faculty and leadership at a particular program had a more favorable impact on the rank lists of URM applicants compared with non-URM.Conclusion: Our collective findings suggest that URM and female medical students have less favorable experiences interacting with urology trainees and faculty than do their nonminority and male counterparts. In the present study, we examined satisfaction with life (SWL), group identifications, perceived discrimination, and socio-economic status among immigrants and stayers. The study had two main objectives: 1) to test the morbidity and salutary hypotheses of immigration by comparing the psycho-social characteristics of immigrants and stayers; 2) to test a resource model of well-being among immigrants and stayers by investigating the effect of different resources and stressors on SWL. The study was conducted using a random representative sample of first-generation immigrants from the Former Soviet Union to Israel (n = 400) and a not-random large and geographically dispersed sample of Jews staying in Russia (n = 935). The comparison of immigrants and stayers revealed that immigration is a mixed blessing, salutary in some aspects and onerous in others. In general, immigrants were more satisfied with their life than stayers. In addition, identification with the country of residence was stronger among immigrants than stayers. However, immigrants reported a higher level of perceived discrimination, and their socio-economic status was lower than that of stayers. Socio-economic status, identification with the country of residence, and perceived discrimination were directly connected to SWL among immigrants and stayers. In addition, among stayers, identification with the ethnic minority group was connected to SWL, while among immigrants, identification with the country of origin was not connected to SWL. Socio-economic status and perceived discrimination also affected SWL indirectly, through their connections to identification with the country of residence among immigrants and stayers and through their connection to ethnic identification among stayers. Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and perceived discrimination impact health overtime, however little is known about their association.Methods: Data for 6,325 participants in the Midlife in the US (MIDUS) study were analyzed across three waves of data. ACEs included emotional or physical abuse, household dysfunction, or financial strain in childhood. Generalized Linear Models with Generalized Estimating Equation approach was used to test the unadjusted and adjusted associations for ACEs and perceived discrimination and perceived inequality.Results: Individuals with ACEs reported significantly higher perceived inequality in work (β=0.05, 95%CI 0.02-0.07), in home (β=0.06, 95%CI 0.04-0.09), in family relationships (β=0.09, 95%CI 0.06-0.11), perceived daily discrimination (β=0.77, 95%CI 0.58-0.96), and perceived lifetime discrimination (β=0.24, 95%CI 0.18-0.30). ACE types were significantly associated with more perceived inequality and perceived discrimination. . Abuse was independently associated with all outcomes after adjusting for household dysfunction, financial strain, age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, marital status, and income.Limitations: Findings cannot speak to the temporal relationship between ACEs and discrimination. It should not be assumed that ACEs cause perceived discrimination, but rather that there is an important association that warrants further investigation.Conclusions: These findings represent the first step in better understanding the relationship between ACEs and perceived discrimination. As both influence health across the lifespan, understanding the relationship, mechanisms, and pathways for intervening are of great importance from a population health perspective. Introduction: This study examines COVID-19-associated discrimination regardless of infection status. It evaluates the contribution of various risk factors (e.g., race/ethnicity and wearing a face mask) and the relationship with mental distress among U.S. adults in March and April 2020, when the pandemic escalated across the country.Methods: Participants consisted of a probability-based, nationally representative sample of U.S. residents aged ≥18 years who completed COVID-19-related surveys online in March and April (n=3,665). Multivariable logistic regression was used to predict the probability of a person perceiving COVID-19-associated discrimination. Linear regression was used to analyze the association between discrimination and mental distress. Analyses were conducted in May 2020.Results: Perception of COVID-19-associated discrimination increased from March (4%) to April (10%). Non-Hispanic Black (absolute risk from 0.09 to 0.15 across months) and Asians (absolute risk from 0.11 to 0.17) were more likely to perceive discrimination than other racial/ethnic groups (absolute risk from 0.03 to 0.11). Individuals who wore face masks (absolute risk from 0.11 to 0.14) also perceived more discrimination than those who did not (absolute risk from 0.04 to 0.11). Perceiving discrimination was subsequently associated with increased mental distress (from 0.77 to 1.01 points on the 4-item Patient Health Questionnaire score).Conclusions: Perception of COVID-19-associated discrimination was relatively low but increased with time. Perceived discrimination was associated with race/ethnicity and wearing face masks and may contribute to greater mental distress during early stages of the pandemic. Purpose: The aim of the study was to quantify the association between perceived everyday discrimination and binge eating among Latinas in the United States.Methods: Participants included 1014 Latinas from the 2002-2003 National Latino and Asian American Study. Modified Poisson models with robust standard errors were used to estimate sociodemographic-adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of binge eating associated with overall and attribution-specific discrimination.Results: Approximately 7% of Latinas reported binge eating. Increased frequency of discrimination was associated with a higher prevalence of binge eating (aPR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.23-2.06), and Latinas reporting frequencies of discrimination in the top tertile had the greatest prevalence elevation (aPR, 3.63; 95% CI, 1.32-10.00). There were important differences by discrimination attribution: Latinas experiencing primarily height/weight-based or skin color-based discrimination had the greatest prevalence elevation relative to those reporting no discrimination (aPR, 10.24; 95% CI, 2.95-35.51; and aPR, 8.83; 95% CI, 2.08-37.54, respectively), whereas Latinas reporting primarily race-based discrimination had the lowest prevalence elevation (aPR, 1.64; 95% CI, 0.47-5.69).Conclusions: Discrimination may be an important social determinant of Latinas' binge eating. This study was designed to examine the extent to which parents' allostatic load (AL) and adolescents' perceived discrimination are interrelated in the prediction of adolescents' AL among rural-to-urban migrants in China, as well as the possible buffering role of social support. Multi-informant data were collected in this study. A total of 158 rural-to-urban migrant adolescents (Mean age = 11.62 years) and one of each of their parents (Mean age = 39.84 years) were recruited from the suburbs of Beijing, China. Both adolescents' and parents' AL scores were based on 10 physiological indices. Migrant adolescents were asked to report their perceived discrimination and social support. Parents' AL was significantly positively related to adolescents' AL. The relationship between parents' and adolescents' AL was stronger among adolescents reporting higher perceived discrimination than among those reporting lower. Social support moderated the adverse effects of parents' AL and perceived discrimination on adolescents' AL. Specifically, among adolescents reporting higher social support, the relationships between parents' and adolescents' AL were not significant for those with either high or low perceived discrimination. However, among adolescents reporting lower social support, the positive association was significant for those with high perceived discrimination but not for those with low perceived discrimination. Parents' AL was a strong predictor of migrant adolescents' AL, and perceived discrimination acted as a catalyst to increase the association. Introduction: Perceiving discriminatory treatment may contribute to systemic inflammation, a risk factor of cardiovascular pathophysiology. This study evaluated the association of self-reported discrimination with changes in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and the mediating role of adiposity.Methods: The sample included 5,145 African-Americans, aged 21-92 years, in the Jackson Heart Study. Everyday, lifetime, and burden from perceived discrimination comprised primary predictors in 3 sets of multivariable linear regression models of baseline (2000-2004) discrimination and natural logarithm of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. Multivariable linear mixed models assessed mean changes in natural logarithm of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein over the study period (2000-2013). Mediation was quantified by percentage changes in estimates adjusted for BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio. Multiple imputation addressed missingness in baseline covariates and in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein taken at all 3 study examinations. Analyses were conducted in 2018.Results: In cross-sectional analyses, male participants in the middle and highest tertiles of lifetime discrimination had natural logarithm of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels that were 0.13 (95% CI= -0.24, -0.01) and 0.15 (95% CI= -0.27, -0.02) natural logarithm(mg/dL) lower than those in the lowest tertile. In longitudinal analyses, all participants reporting more frequent everyday discrimination had a 0.07 natural logarithm(mg/dL) greater increase in natural logarithm of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein per examination than those reporting none (95% CI=0.01, 0.12). A similar trend emerged for lifetime discrimination and changes in natural logarithm of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (adjusted mean increase per visit: 0.04 natural logarithm[mg/dL], 95% CI=0.01, 0.08). Adiposity did not mediate the longitudinal associations.Conclusions: Everyday and lifetime discrimination were associated with significant high-sensitivity C-reactive protein increases over 13 years. • Perceived discrimination had a significantly negative prediction on left-behind children's academic self-concept. • School belonging plays a mediating role between perceived discrimination and academic self-concept. • A higher proportion of left-behind children could predict lower levels of their academic self-concept. • The negative effect of perceived discrimination on academic self-concept was attenuated in classes with a higher classroom proportion of left-behind children. This study aims to investigate how perceived discrimination affects left-behind children's academic self-concept, and to examine the mediating role of school belonging on the relationship between them. Two prominent classroom compositional effects, the peer spillover effect and the big-fish-little-pond effect, also need to be confirmed. A total of 998 left-behind children participated in the two surveys. They reported perceived discrimination and individual basic information at time 1. After two months, the measurements of school belonging and academic self-concept were completed at time 2. These results suggested that perceived discrimination had a significantly negative prediction on left-behind children's academic self-concept, and school belonging plays a mediating role between these variables. In addition, in a given classroom, a higher proportion of left-behind children could predict lower levels of their academic self-concept. Furthermore, the negative effect of perceived discrimination on academic self-concept was attenuated in classes with a higher classroom proportion of left-behind children. • This is the first population-based study considering marriage/cohabitation and divorce in adopted adults. • For partnership formation, domestic adoptees are more similar to the general population. • For divorce, domestic and intercountry adoptees alike present a considerably higher incidence than the general population. • For couple formation, the difference between domestic and intercountry adoptees suggests that factors unrelated to adoption are involved. • For divorce, similarities between both adopted groups suggest adoption-related factors are involved. • Age at adoption was not associated with neither partnership formation nor divorce in the intercountry adoptees. Adoption research shows a growing interest in adopted persons in their adult years. This article examines couple partnerships and divorce among adult adoptees and non-adoptees. Using population-based Swedish register data with follow-up until age 36–45 years, domestic and international adoptees were compared with the general population, as well as with immigrants who settled in Sweden in their early years and share with international adoptees a non-European physical appearance. Given their preadoption adversities and associated increased mental health problems, as well as postadoption experiences of perceived discrimination, adoptees were expected to have more problems in the formation and breakdown of partner relationships, particularly in the case of international adoptees. The study used data from national registers on Swedish national cohorts born 1972–83, including two study groups with a non-European origin who settled in Sweden at age 0–8 years (14,761 international adoptees and 11,085 immigrants) as well as 906 domestic adoptees and 936,988 Swedish born with a Swedish-born mother from the general population. In contrast with international adoptees, who have a 14 % lower adjusted rate of couple compared with the general population, domestic adoptees were more like the Swedish general population in terms of couple partnership formation. However, in terms of divorce, domestic and international adoptees share a significantly higher incidence than the general population and the immigrants study groups. Both in the formation and breakdown of couple relationships, international adopted men present less favorable outcomes than international adopted women. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motor symptoms including depression and cognitive impairment. There is underrepresentation of Latinxs in PD research as most of the research consists of non-Latinx white participants. The current study investigates longitudinal differences in health disparities among Latinx and White non-Latinx individuals living with PD. As a second aim, we examined the associations between perceived discrimination in healthcare and outcomes from aim 1. The present study consisted of 25,298 individuals with PD who enrolled in the Fox Insight (FI) online study. Participants were followed annually for up to 3 years. Participants completed measures of depressive symptoms, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), cognitive complaints, subjective motor symptom severity, self-reported income, and perceived discrimination in healthcare. Multilevel models examined the longitudinal differences in non-motor and motor outcomes among Latinx (n = 1161) and White non-Latinx individuals (n = 24,137). Latinx participants reported significantly more depressive symptoms and worse HRQOL than non-Latinx individuals. No significant differences were found in cognitive complaints, or motor severity between Latinx and non-Latinx participants. The main effect of perceived discrimination was associated with both depressive symptoms and HRQOL. The current study provides initial evidence of mental health discrepancies among Latinx individuals living with PD and White non-Latinx counterparts. Biracial individuals, a subset of the fastest growing population segment in the United States, frequently experience conflict with ethnic identity, according to marginality theory. Ethnic identity is associated with perceived discrimination and self-esteem, and each of these factors is associated with alcohol and marijuana use. Some research suggests that Black-White biracial individuals have specific challenges with ethnic identity, discrimination, and self-esteem, as well as have disproportionate rates of alcohol and marijuana use separately. Co-use of these substances is linked to more risk behaviors and greater quantity/frequency of use compared to singular use of alcohol or marijuana. However, research examining these cultural and psychosocial factors as correlates of recent co-use among Black-White biracial individuals is limited. The current study examined past-year cultural (i.e., ethnic identity, perceived discrimination) and psychosocial (i.e., age, gender, self-esteem) factors associated with past 30-day co-use (i.e., alcohol, marijuana) among a sample of 195 biracial (Black-White) adults recruited and surveyed via MTurk. We analyzed data using a hierarchical logistic regression. Results of the final step of logistic regression indicate increases in perceived discrimination were significantly associated with a 1.06 times greater likelihood in 30-day co-use (95% CI [1.002, 1.10]; p =.002). Further, co-use is more common among women than men (OR = 0.50, 95% CI [0.25, 0.98]; p =.04). Findings indicate discrimination experienced among Black-White biracial adults is the most culturally relevant correlate of recent co-use in this study, of the factors measured given the framework. As such, substance use treatment with this population may focus on experiences of and coping with discrimination. Since women were also at greater risk for co-use, gender-specific treatments may be beneficial for this population. • Left-behind children (LBC) who do not exhibit depressive symptoms are considered resilient, but what contributes to their resilience remains unknown. • This paper utilizes the risk and resilience framework and is the first to conceptualize that LBC's resilience is improved when protective factors mitigate the negative impact of risk factors. • Hope was found to mitigate the negative impact of stressful life events on depressive symptoms in left-behind boys. With increased hope, stressful life events have a decreased impact on depressive symptoms in left-behind boys. Left-behind children (LBC) in China, of which there are 40 million, are a significant concern due to reported mental health issues including depression. Recent research has shown the negative correlation between resilience and the poor mental health outcomes of LBC, but the underlying mechanisms of this resilience have remained unclear. This study utilized the Risk and Resilience framework and conceptualized that resilience is an outcome of the absence of depressive symptoms when protective factors mitigate the negative impact of risk factors. This study examined whether protective factors were correlated with a reduction in the association between risk factors and LBC's depressive symptoms, thereby contributing to LBC's resilience. Participants were recruited from first and second-year middle school students in Henan province, aged 11–15 years (N = 841). Researchers delivered the questionnaires to the classrooms. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between hope and depressive symptoms as well as to examine the moderating role of hope on the correlations between risk factors and depressive symptoms. The same analyses were stratified by gender. Hope was negatively correlated with LBC's depressive symptoms. For males, there was a significant interaction between hope and stressful life events, but the interaction was not significant for females. Purpose: Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a highly prevalent condition with serious sequelae. Many studies of the condition have been restricted to populations with diabetes, limiting evidence of potential contributing risk factors including salient psychosocial risk factors such as discrimination.Methods: The longitudinal Study of Women's Health Across the Nation was used to assess the relationship between perceived discrimination and prevalent PN in 1718 ethnically diverse midlife women. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine the association between perceived discrimination (Detroit Area Study Everyday Discrimination Scale) and PN (symptom questionnaire and monofilament testing) and conducted an assessment of the mediating effects of body mass index (BMI).Results: The prevalence of PN was 26.1% in the total sample and 40.9% among women with diabetes. Women who reported perceived discrimination had 29% higher odds of PN compared with women who did not report perceived discrimination (95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.66). Approximately 30% of the total effect of discrimination on PN was mediated indirectly by BMI.Conclusions: More research is needed to determine the contributing factors to nondiabetic PN. The aim of this study is to examine the relative contribution of acculturation, perceived social support, and perceived discrimination on psychological well-being (PWB) among Middle Eastern (ME) migrants in Australia. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Queensland, Australia. A total of 382 first-generation young adult (aged 20–39 years) ME migrants completed a self-administered questionnaire. The hypothesised model was tested through a two-step process: measurement, and structural model testing. First, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied to test the fit of the measurement model and reliability and validity indices were calculated. Structural Equations Modelling (SEM) was then used to test the structural model. The significance of the mediating effect was tested using bootstrapping method. Mainstream acculturation had the greatest accumulated total effect on PWB through both a direct and an indirect effect via perceived discrimination. Ethnic acculturation had the second greatest total effect on PWB, with both a direct effect and indirect effects through perceived social support and perceived discrimination. Perceived discrimination demonstrated both a direct effect and an indirect effect on PWB through perceived social support. Perceived social support had only a direct effect on PWB. Facilitating ME migrants' active participation in both ethnic and mainstream societies is important. Moreover, developing ethnic communities associations and resources could be an effective option to provide social support to ME migrants and in turn to improve their PWB.
