Highlights • Six different adaptation types are identified in Tyrolean mountain agriculture. • Identified adaptation types represent a broad range of local practices. • Unintended local adaptations constitute low-hanging fruit for decision-makers. • Presented framework may help to allocate public resources more efficiently. Abstract Impacts of climate change have become more and more evident and can be observed in ecosystems, societies and economies worldwide. Mountain agriculture is especially vulnerable to climate change, and adaptation seems crucial. Thus, certain adaptation activities, such as installing irrigation technology, switching to drought-resistant crop varieties or shifting planting dates, can already be observed. Despite these efforts, the barriers for climate change adaptation are still manifold and lead to adaptation gaps. One problem is that many approaches ignore non-climatic drivers, such as economic conditions or cultural aspects, which have a strong influence on farmers´ decisions. In the literature, the focus is mostly on planned, "top-down" induced adaptations, where climate change is considered the most important driver. Within this study, we focus on local, "bottom-up" adaptation actions in Tyrolean mountain agriculture that may be triggered by climatic as well as by non-climatic drivers. We identify 27 adaptation practices and cluster them into six types of climate change adaptation: ´Resilience-raising products and production´, ´Hidden actions by farmer organizations´, ´CC motivated agronomic actions´, ´CCA scientific knowledge production´, ´Risk-driven adaptations´ and ´Hidden governmental actions´. These types are helpful to show the broad range of local practices contributing to climate change adaptation. Several adaptation actions from practice are not motivated by climate change and thus are termed "hidden" adaptations, as they do not fit into common adaptation concepts. Hidden climate change adaptation practices, although not considered to date in official CCA policy documents, constitute "low-hanging fruit" for decision makers as they have already proved their feasibility and gained legitimacy by actors on the ground. • The g-r bulk noise is interpreted in terms of the number of traps. • Discrete switching is obtained by reducing the number of traps to just one single trap. • The g-r noise due to a single trap is controlled by the underlying random telegraph signal (RTS). • This gives rise to a random succession of g-r pulses in the conduction band. • The RTS relaxation time is shown to be equal to the g-r relaxation time of conduction electrons. Background: Drinking water is often applied as a dietary means for weight loss and overweight/obesity prevention, but no evidence-based recommendation exists for this indication. Objective: We summarized the existing evidence on the association between water consumption and body weight outcomes in adults of any body weight status. Design: In a systematic review, we retrieved studies from 4 electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and COCHRANE), cross-references by PubMed functions and hand-searching, and experts' recommendations. Any type of study including adults aged >18 y that reported the association between daily water consumption and any weight-related outcome, such as body weight, body mass index, or body weight classifications, was eligible. Results: Of 4963 retrieved records, 11 original studies and 2 systematic reviews were included. In participants dieting for weight loss or maintenance, a randomized controlled trial, a nonrandomized controlled trial, and an observational longitudinal study showed that increased water consumption, in addition to a program for weight loss or maintenance, reduced body weight after 3-12 mo compared with such a program alone. In mixed-weight populations not primarily dieting for weight loss or maintenance, 2 short-term randomized trials showed no effect of water consumption on body weight; 6 cross-sectional studies showed inconsistent results. Conclusions: Studies of individuals dieting for weight loss or maintenance suggest a weight-reducing effect of increased water consumption, whereas studies in general mixed-weight populations yielded inconsistent results. Abstract: We have synthesized double wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) with few defects and little amorphous carbon by hot wall chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of alcohol. Catalysts for the DWNT growth were made from cobalt and molybdenum acetates. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, multi frequency resonance Raman spectroscopy and optical absorption spectroscopy were used for characterization of the product with regard to DWNT yield, the nanotube diameter distribution, defect concentration and amorphous carbon content. Base pressures lower than 1×10−5 mbar in the CVD reactor considerably suppress defects in the DWNTs. Optimized growth conditions for DWNT formation are presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• We transfer the phenomenon of fluorescence intermittency to the g-r process in semiconductors. • This leads to a g-r process which is controlled by off-states and power-law distributed on-states. • Based on such an intermittent g-r process, we estimate the lowest limit of 1/f noise in semiconductors. • We show that this limit is inversely proportional to the dopant concentration. • To detect the lowest limit of 1/f noise, the number of centers should be as small as possible. A lowest limit of 1/f noise in semiconductor materials has not yet been reported; we do not even know if such a lowest limit exists. 1/f noise in semiconductors has recently been brought into relation with 1/f noise in quantum dots and other materials. These materials exhibit on-off states which are power-law distributed over a wide range of timescales. We transfer such findings to semiconductors, assuming that the g-r process is also controlled by such on-off states. As a result, we obtain 1/f noise which can be expressed as Hooge's relation. Based on the intermittent g-r process, we estimate the lowest limit of 1/f noise in semiconductor materials. We show that this limit is inversely proportional to the dopant concentration; to detect the lowest limit of 1/f noise, the number of centers should be as small as possible. Background: Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) concentrations are a major independent risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and are mainly determined by variation in LPA. Up to 70% of the LPA coding sequence is located in the hypervariable kringle IV type 2 (KIV-2) region. It is hardly accessible by conventional technologies, but may contain functional variants.Objectives: This study sought to investigate the new, very frequent splicing variant KIV-2 4733G>A on Lp(a) and CAD.Methods: We genotyped 4733G>A in the GCKD (German Chronic Kidney Disease) study (n = 4,673) by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction, performed minigene assays, identified proxy single nucleotide polymorphisms and used them to characterize its effect on CAD by survival analysis in UK Biobank (n = 440,234). Frequencies in ethnic groups were assessed in the 1000 Genomes Project.Results: The 4733G>A variant (38.2% carrier frequency) was found in most isoform sizes. It reduces allelic expression without abolishing protein production, lowers Lp(a) by 13.6 mg/dL (95% CI: 12.5-14.7; P < 0.0001) and is the strongest variance-explaining factor after the smaller isoform. Splicing of minigenes was modified. Compound heterozygosity (4.6% of the population) for 4733G>A and 4925G>A, another KIV-2 splicing mutation, reduces Lp(a) by 31.8 mg/dL and most importantly narrows the interquartile range by 9-fold (from 42.1 to 4.6 mg/dL) when compared to the wild type. In UK Biobank 4733G>A alone and compound heterozygosity with 4925G>A reduced HR for CAD by 9% (95% CI: 7%-11%) and 12% (95% CI: 7%-16%) (both P < 0.001). Frequencies in ethnicities differ notably.Conclusions: Functional variants in the previously inaccessible LPA KIV-2 region cooperate in determining Lp(a) variance and CAD risk. The optical absorption matrix element as a function of one-dimensional (1D) wave vector k, and subband index μ of a single wall carbon nanotube is given analytically for linearly polarized light with polarization parallel to the nanotube axis. For armchair nanotubes, it is found that the optical transitions for non-degenerate A symmetry bands are forbidden over the whole 1D k region and the transitions for all other bands are also forbidden at the k=0 point. Near the Fermi level, the absorption for all metallic nanotubes is found to be approximately zero. For both metallic and semiconducting nanotubes, it is found that the absorption matrix element has a maximum absolute value at the van Hove singularity (vHS) k point around the Fermi energy for each band. The absorption dependence on diameter and chiral angle is also presented for semiconducting nanotubes. For light polarization perpendicular to the nanotube axis, on the other hand, the absorption for nanotubes is generally weak near a vHS. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The characterization of graphene by electron and optical spectroscopy is well established and has led to numerous breakthroughs in material science. Yet, it is interesting to note that these characterization methods are almost never carried out on the same sample, i.e., electron spectroscopy uses epitaxial graphene while optical spectroscopy relies on cleaved graphene flakes. In order to bring coherence and convergence to this branch, a universal and easy-to-prepare substrate is needed. Here we suggest that chemical vapour deposition (CVD) grown graphene on thin monocrystalline Ir(1 1 1) films, which are grown heteroepitaxially on Si(1 1 1) wafers with an yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layer, perfectly meets these needs. We investigate graphene prepared in this way by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), resonance Raman spectroscopy, and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Our results highlight the excellent crystalline quality of graphene, comparable to graphene prepared on Ir(1 1 1) bulk single crystals. This synthesis route allows for large-area, inexpensive growth on standardized disposable substrates, suitable for both optical and electron spectroscopic characterization, which meets the needs of many researchers in the field. Abstract: The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) is calculated for each (n, m) by multiplying the photon-absorption, relaxation and photon-emission matrix elements. The intensity depends on chirality and “type I vs type II” for smaller diameter semiconducting SWNTs (less than 1nm). By comparing the calculated results with the experimental PL intensity of SWNTs prepared by chemical vapor deposition at different temperatures, we find that the abundance of (n, m) nanotubes with smaller diameters should exhibit a strong chirality dependence, which may be related to the stability of their caps. Abstract: The second order Raman signals around the G′-band region of graphite and carbon nanotubes have been investigated at more than 15 excitation laser lines. Two distinct Raman bands have been observed around 2700cm−1; a prominent one is due to the so-called G′-band and the other is a weak band around 2450cm−1. Both two bands can be from the double resonance process involving two phonons around the K-point in the phonon dispersion of a two-dimensional graphite. The 2450cm−1-band has exhibited little power dependence, whereas the intensity of G′-band has shown large photon energy dependence as already reported. The 2450cm−1-band and the G′-band correspond to non-dispersive q =0 and fully-dispersive q =2k, respectively. From the phonon dispersion and the corresponding phonon frequency, the 2450cm−1-band can be assigned as an overtone mode of LO phonon (i.e. 2LO). This is revealed by calculated Raman spectra of graphite with proper electron–phonon matrix elements.
