Abstract: The first 2D open-architecture Ba(II) perchlorate with organic template, [(H+4-MP)2Ba(ClO4)4] n (1) (4-MP=4-methylpyridine), has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR, TGA, DSC and fluorescence properties. The Ba(II) centers of the icosahedral (BaO12) were chelated through μ 2-perchlorate donors to form a 2D (4,4) topology with the protonated amine molecules mounted to the main body of the inorganic framework by N–H⋯O H-bonding interactions. To verify the generality of the synthetic methods, 4-MP has been replaced by other different amine templates. Abstract: This work firstly focuses on the thermodynamic and kinetic studies of the liquid phase separation in the Cu–Cr–Si ternary system. On the thermodynamic aspect, four isothermal sections of the Cu–Cr–Si system at 900°C, 1000°C, 1100°C and 1200°C have been experimentally determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) on the equilibrated alloys, and the phase equilibria in the Cu–Cr–Si ternary system has been thermodynamically assessed by using the CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) technique on the basis of the presently obtained experimental results. The addition of Si can stabilize the metastable liquid phase separation in the Cu–Cr binary system, and increase its critical temperature. On the kinetic aspect, the formation of top–bottom and core–shell separated morphologies of the as-cast liquid immiscible Cu–Cr–Si alloys under various cooling rates have been detailedly analyzed. Abstract: The phase equilibria at 900°C, 1000°C, 1100°C, 1200°C and 1300°C in the Cu–Mo–Ni system were experimentally determined by means of optical microscopy (OM), electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) on the equilibrated alloys. The experimental results firstly found that the fcc-type miscibility gap exists at 900°C, 1000°C, 1100°C and 1200°C in the Cu–Mo–Ni system, and the solubility of Cu in the MoNi phase at 900°C, 1000°C, 1100°C and 1200°C are about 0.5at.%, 1.5at.%, 1.7at.% and 4.0at.%, respectively. The as-cast Cu20Mo20Ni60 (at.%), Cu20Mo30Ni50 (at.%), Cu10Mo60Ni30 (at.%), Cu70Mo10Ni60 (at.%), Cu20Mo60Ni20 (at.%) and Cu80Mo10Ni10 (at.%) alloys appear the separated macroscopic morphologies, which are caused by the liquid phase separation on cooling, while the as-cast Cu10Mo25Ni65 (at.%), Cu32Mo5Ni63 (at.%) and Cu30.7Mo6.3Ni63 (at.%) alloys show the homogenous microscopic morphologies. On the basis of the experimental data investigated by the present and previous works, the phase equilibria in the Cu–Mo–Ni system were thermodynamically assessed by using CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) method, and a consistent set of the thermodynamic parameters leading to reasonable agreement between the calculated results and experimental data was obtained. Abstract: Coordination polymers [Hg(L 2 )Cl2] n (1) and {[Hg2(L 2 )Cl4](DMF)} n (2) have been assembled from Hg(II) chloride and a novel tripyridyltriazole tecton 3,4-bis(2-pyridyl)-5-(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (L 2 ) in different solvent media. Both complexes have been characterized by IR, microanalysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal X-ray diffraction indicates that the L 2 ligands take the (η3, μ2) and (η4, μ3) binding modes in 1 and 2, respectively, which connect the Hg(II) centers to afford linear and ladder-like 1D arrays. Interestingly, complex 1 exhibits strong solid state fluorescent emission at room temperature due to the intraligand transitions, whereas complex 2 is non-fluorescent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Life tests of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) were carried out with three individual single cells for three different times. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to evaluate the cathodic Pt black catalysts prior to and after the life tests. XRD results showed that the particle sizes of cathodic catalysts increased from an original value of 7.3–8.3, 8.7, and 9.2nm, whereas their lattice parameters first increased and then decreased from an original value of 3.9188–3.9210, 3.9197, and 3.9196Å before and after 117, 210, and 312 working hours, respectively. XPS results indicated that the metal content gradually decreased with test time, but the contents of Pt oxides in cathodic catalysts increased. Hydrogen adsorption–desorption cyclic voltammetry were employed to test the performances of three individual fuel cells and the electrochemically active surface areas (S EAS) of cathodic catalysts before and after the life tests. It is found that both S EAS of cathodic catalysts and their utilization decreased markedly. This indicates that the change of S EAS and utilization of cathodic catalysts are the main factors affecting the performance decay of DMFC. The dissolution/agglomeration of Pt metal from cathodic catalysts also plays an important role in the performance decay of DMFC. The sintering/degradations of cathodic Pt nanoparticles were accelerated due to crossover of methanol to form the mixed potentials. Abstract: The phase equilibria in the Co–Ti–Mo ternary system were investigated by means of optical microscopy (OM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five isothermal sections of the Co–Ti–Mo ternary system at 900°C, 1000°C, 1100°C, 1200°C and 1300°C were experimentally established and no ternary compound was found in this system. The Co3Mo (D019) phase stabilized by the addition of Ti was known. In addition, the single-phase region of the Co2Ti (h) phase was identified in the isothermal section at 1300°C. Abstract: Two new 8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl) substituted boron-dipyrromethene (BDP) dyes: 1,2,6,7-tetraethyl-4,4-difluoro-3,5-dimethyl-8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (5) and 4,4-difluoro-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexamethyl-8-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (6) have been synthesized and their crystal structures are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The torsion angles of 8-phenyl ring and the indacene plane are 79.61° for 5 and 87.56° for 6, respectively. The absorption and steady-state fluorescence properties in different solvents have been investigated. The fluorescence quantum yields of the two dyes are lower in more polar solvents, which can be ascribed to the intramolecular charge transfer from the aniline to the BDP unit. Protonation of the aniline moiety at low pH in MeOH–H2O (1:1 v/v) solution causes a large fluorescence enhancement. The pK a values calculated from the pH dependent fluorescence emission spectra are 3.14 for 5 and 3.09 for 6, respectively. They are suitable as pH probes excitable with visible light. Abstract: This work firstly presents detailed evidence of the fcc-type miscibility gap in the Cu–Ni–V system at temperatures between 1000°C and 1100°C. The phase equilibria, phase transformation behavior and microhardness of the (Cu0.5Ni0.5)100−xVx (at.%) (x=2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) alloys have been investigated by electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Vickers hardness tester, confirming that the fcc-type miscibility gap exists in the Cu–Ni–V system at temperatures between 1000°C and 1100°C. The obtained results will not only help to well understand the strengthening mechanisms in the Cu–Ni–V alloys at high temperatures, but also to effectively develop new high-temperature spinodal-hardened Cu–Ni–V base alloys in the future. Abstract: The phase equilibria in the Co–W–V ternary system were experimentally investigated by optical microscopy (OM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) on the equilibrated alloys. Three isothermal sections of the Co–W–V ternary system at 1100°C, 1200°C and 1300°C were determined, and no ternary compound was found in this system. In addition, a novel phenomena induced by the liquid phase separation in the Co–W–V alloys was firstly discovered, suggesting that a stable liquid miscibility gap exists in the Co–W–V ternary system. The newly determined phase equilibria and firstly discovered phase separation phenomena in the Co–W–V system will provide important information for the development of Co–W based alloys. A new polyoxometalate-based compound, [Ag(bbi)][(Ag 2 (bbi) 2 )(VMo 12 O 40 )]·6H 2 O ( 1 ) (bbi = 1,1’-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole), has been synthesized under the hydrothermal condition and characterized by routine methods. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 exhibits an interesting (2D+1D) pseudo-rotaxane architecture. The electrochemical experiments indicate that 1 -based carbon paste electrode ( 1 -CPE) possesses high catalytic efficiency and high stability toward reduction of NO 2 − . Namely, the electrocatalytic efficiency towards the reduction of NO 2 − is ca. 364.3% in pH 4.0 CH 3 COOH/CH 3 COONa containing 16 mM NO 2 − , and the current signal after 100 cycles exhibits almost no loss for 1 -CPE. A new helical compound based on polyoxovanadates, [Ni(H 2 O) 2 V 2 O 6 ] ( 1 ), has been synthesized under the hydrothermal condition. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 possesses a pair of entanglement double helixes in an inorganic framework with (8 1 12 4 16 1 ) (8 2 12 2 16 2 ) topology. There are two kinds of approximately elliptical helical channels in inorganic framework. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic properties of compound 1 were investigated in details. This study was carried out to investigate the properties of the OSL signal from Eu-doped calcium sulfate (CaSO 4 :Eu) phosphor and study on its thermal behavior as a function of temperature under a series of luminescence experiments. The suitability of its usage as an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeter was also checked. CaSO 4 :Eu was synthesized using the precipitation method and prepared in pellet form. The dopant concentration value was performed as 0.1 mol%. The synthesized CaSO 4 :Eu was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) method to confirm the product. To have an idea about the crystallography and microstructure morphology of the material, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis were carried out. It was found that the OSL signal is a resultant signal having three components and exhibits thermal quenching above 150 °C. The excitation spectrum of CaSO 4 :Eu showed different peaks in the region 220–360 nm with the highest one at 269 nm. Thermoluminescence (TL) signals of CaSO 4 :Eu pellets were obtained and compared with the TL signals obtained after OSL measurements of the same pellets by blue light stimulation. The low temperature peak near 180 °C did not show any significant change in TL after OSL measurement whereas the high temperature peak at 240 °C was bleached with the blue light illumination and might be responsible for the observed OSL signal. The dosimetric properties such as dose response, minimum detectable dose, energy response, reusability, fading properties, thermal stability and effect of reading temperatures on OSL signals were examined. OSL signals of CaSO 4 :Eu pellets were decreased by approximately 8% at the end of the 24 h and by about 7% at the end of 28 days when compared with the first readout. The thermal stability of the ∼240 °C TL peak and OSL signal using isothermal decay measurements were used to determine the trap parameters. The CaSO 4 :Eu OSL dosimeter in accordance with the presented study allows a high-sensitivity OSL phosphor whose host material was previously known as conventional synthetic CaSO 4 TLD material. A new compound, [Cu I (bib)] 2 [Cu II (bib) 2 ( β -Mo 8 O 26 )]∙4H 2 O ( 1 ) (bib = 1,4-bis(1-imidazol-yl)-2,5-dimethyl benzene), has been synthesized under the hydrothermal condition and characterized by elemental analysis, TG, EDS, IR, XRD and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 exhibits a complicated (1D + 3D) metal-organic pseudo-rotaxane framework (MO PR F). This fashion is rare in the previous reports on pseudo-rotaxane structure, namely, one “loop” encircles two “strings” rather than a single one. The stabilization/solidification approach has received considerable attentions for the disposal of hazardous metal-bearing mine tailings. A poor understanding of the immobilization mechanism of heavy metals in final products always restricts its practical applications. We reported that, the stabilization of toxic heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu) in bricks made from the lead and zinc mine tailings (LZMT) was highly dependent on the relative contents of SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , CaO and MgO in LZMT. As the (SiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 )/(Fe 2 O 3 + CaO + MgO) ratios (SA/FCM ratios) increased, the C Pb , C Cd , or C Cu in leachates slightly decreased first and then increased. Much differently, C Zn firstly increased and then decreased, having highest C Zn (3.92 mg/L at 30th day) at the SA/FCM ratios of 0.80. Compared with C Zn and C Pb , a much small C Cd and C Cu can be found. Notably, the C Zn and C Pb are also impacted by the change of SiO 2 :Al 2 O 3 ratios (and Fe 2 O 3 :CaO:MgO ratios as well). The C Pb decreased as the SiO 2 :Al 2 O 3 ratios increased from 1:0.046 to 1:1.354, while the C Zn reached a highest value at SiO 2 :Al 2 O 3 ratio of 1:0.084. The XRD analysis suggests that, the Al and Si can interact with Pb to form PbAl 2 Si 2 O 8 , which facilitates the immobilization of Pb 2+ . Excessive amount of SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 bring the difficulties to forming stabile skeletons, resulting in the leaching of Pb readily. As for Zn, higher C Zn is generally owing to the occurrence of acid-soluble Zn 2 SiO 4 in bricks. The stabilization of Zn was achieved once Al 3+ was introduced as host to be substituted by Zn 2+ in the aluminate or aluminosilicate matrix. A novel compound, [Co 2 (bimb) 2 VW 12 O 40 ] [bimb]·6H 2 O ( 1 ) (bimb = 1.4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene), with polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF), has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectrum, X-ray photoemission spectra, elemental analyses, and powder X-ray diffraction pattern. In the compound, there are metal-organic nanotubes formed by [Co 2 (bimb)] 4 + zig-zag chains and six-connected VW 12 guest clusters. Further, the neighboring metal-organic nanotubes are connected together via sharing the [Co 2 bimb] 4 + zig-zag chains to achieve a highly opened POMOF with hexagonal apertures, representing the first POMOF constructed by V-centered tungstovanadate. The influence of Gd element and solution treatment on the microstructure of AZ31 alloy was investigated in this paper. The microstructure and phase composition were characterized by OM, SEM, EDS and XRD. The results indicate that Mg 17 Al 12 eutectic phase, scattered along the grain boundary, is suppressed effectively with Gd addition and the acicular Al 2 Gd superlattice with lamellar distribution is formed. Furthermore, the grain size of AZ31 alloy is also refined with Gd addition. In the subsequent process of solution, the migration and growth of Al 2 Gd phase conforms to Ostwald Ripening Theory. Fe-doped SrMoO 4 (SrMo 0.94 Fe 0.06 O 4−δ ), synthesized by an EDTA–glycine complexing combustion process, can be easily reduced to SrMo 0.94 Fe 0.06 O 3−δ (SMF) at 850 °C in pure H 2 atmosphere. The incorporation of Gd 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 1.9 (GDC) into SrMo 0.94 Fe 0.06 O 3−δ is supposed to enhance the ionic conductivity and catalytic activity of SMF. Phase composition and chemical compatibility of SMF-GDC composite in both air and H 2 atmosphere are confirmed by X-ray diffraction test. SMF-GDC composites in different mass ratios are systematically investigated in terms of electrical conductivity, electrochemical performance and power output with the fuel cells. With the addition of GDC, the ionic conductivity is able to be improved and the lowest interfacial polarization resistance is observed to be 0.647 Ω cm 2 for SMF7-GDC3 composite anode at 850 °C. With SMF7-GDC3 as anode, the single cell is able to generate a maximum power density of 530 mW cm −2 at 850 °C when fed with pure H 2 (30 mL min −1 ) and demonstrates a considerable stability with the anode exposed to H 2 and upon redox cycling. A novel adsorbent NH 2 /MCM-41/NTAA, capable of simultaneous adsorption of cations and anions from aqueous solution, was prepared by immobilization of amine and nitrilotriacetic acid anhydride (NTAA) onto MCM-41. The structures and properties before and after surface modification were systematically investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption, and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). They together confirm that the amine and NTAA group were chemically bonded to the internal surface of the mesoporous. The NH 2 /MCM-41/NTAA were used to adsorb Pb 2+ and MnO 4 − in an aqueous solution in a batch system, and the maximum adsorption efficiency was found to occur at pH 5.0 and 3.0, respectively. NH 2 /MCM-41/NTAA exhibit preferable removal of Pb 2+ through electrostatic interactions and chelation, whereas it captures MnO 4 − by means of electrostatic interactions. The experimental data are fitted the Langmuir isotherm model reasonably well, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 147 mg/g for Pb 2+ and of 156 mg/g for MnO 4 − . The adsorption rates of both Pb 2+ and MnO 4 − are found to follow the pseudo-second order kinetics. Furthermore, the NH 2 /MCM-41/NTAA adsorbent performs good recyclability and reusability for 5 cycles use. Abstract: The α-Fe2O3 powders composed of different flower-like or yarn-like clusters are prepared by a thermal decomposition process of iron alkoxide precursors, which are obtained via a simple reaction between iron acetylacetonate and ethylene glycol in an oil bath. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurement, and galvanostatic cell cycling are employed to characterize the structures and electrochemical performance of these α-Fe2O3 samples. The results show that these α-Fe2O3 electrodes have stable cycling performance with a reversible capacity of over 800mAhg−1 after 40 cycles. The sample with optimized structure shows the best rate performance with a high capacity of 622mAhg−1 at the current density of 4687mAg−1. Abstract: A plate-like carbon-coated Li3V2(PO4)3 (LVP/C) powder composed of nanoplates was synthesized by a hydrothermal route. The structure and electrochemical properties of the LVP/C are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling. This LVP/C electrode exhibits good rate performance at room temperature with a specific capacity of 113.8 and 128.8mAhg−1 at 6C rate in the voltage range of 3.0–4.3V and 3.0–4.8V, respectively. The sample also shows good cycling performance with 91.4% and 85% of capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1C rate. Even at −20°C, the plate-like LVP/C delivers a stable cycling performance with a specific capacity of 120.7mAhg−1, being 95.3% of the capacity at room temperature, and after 80 cycles, the capacity retention is 97.2%. Abstract: Micrometer Li1.05Mn1.95O4 has been synthesized by solid state reactions with the nano-Mn3O4 as a precursor. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and laser particle sizer are employed to investigate the structures, morphologies and particle size distributions of the powder. The micrometer Li1.05Mn1.95O4 exhibits good rate performance at room temperature with a specific capacity of 98.4mAhg−1 at 5C. The Li1.05Mn1.95O4/Li half cell also shows good cycling performance at elevated temperature with 90.5% of its initial capacity retained after 100 cycles at 1C. At −20°C, the Li1.05Mn1.95O4 delivers a stable cycling performance with a specific capacity of 84.5mAhg−1, being 84.1% of the capacity at room temperature. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and rate performance measurements illustrate an increasing polarization with decreasing the temperature. In addition, the diffusion coefficients of lithium ions in Li1.05Mn1.95O4 at various temperatures (25, 0, −10 and −20°C) are determined to be in the magnitude of 10−10 to 10−12 cm2 s−1 by cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. Abstract: The phase equilibria of the Ni–Co–Si ternary system have been investigated by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) on the equilibrated alloys. Three isothermal sections of the Ni–Co–Si ternary system at 1000°C, 1100°C and 1200°C were determined, and no ternary compound was found in this system. The obtained experimental results in the present work show that (1) there is a large α (Ni, Co) continuous solid solution; (2) the extensions of all the binary intermediate phases of the Ni–Si and Co–Si system into the ternary occur along the respective stoichiometric lines of fixed Si contents. Abstract: In the present paper, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) using 20wt.% Pt/C as anode and cathode catalysts, and ambient air at cathode was operated at a current density of 160mAcm−2 for 2250h. The measurement results showed that electrochemically active specific areas (S EAS) of both electrode catalysts calculated from CV curves after test evidently decreased. The decay rate of S EAS of anode catalyst was much lower than that of cathode one. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) were employed to characterize the anode and cathode catalysts before and after the life test. The XRD results showed that their crystal structures were perfect, the particle size of new Pt/C catalyst was about 2.5nm, however, the particle sizes of anode and cathode ones markedly increased, and were about 4.9nm and 6.8nm, respectively, after the life test. Furthermore, the size of cathode catalyst was much bigger than that of anode one after test. The Pt element was also found in Nafion® film as shown in EDAX result. The XPS results presented that the content of Pt oxidation states in cathode was much more than that in anode, and the corrosion of carbon support in cathode was also more severe than that in anode after the life test. The experimental results indicated that the increase of particle size of Pt/C catalyst was illustrated with the dissolution/redeposition mechanism. Abstract: Zinc silicate was synthesized hydrothermally from zinc acetate and tetraethyl orthosilicate or sodium silicate. The possible lowest synthetic temperature and reaction parameters determining the morphology of the products were discussed. High base concentration favors the rod formation. Abstract: A new Schiff base copper(II) complex, Cu(o-VANAHE)2 (o-VANAHE=2-(o-vanillinamino)-1-hydroxyethane), has been synthesized and characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction results suggest that this complex structure belongs to triclinic crystal system, space group with the following crystallographic parameters: a =8.819(4)Å, b =10.794(5)Å, c =11.350(5)Å, α =70.262(6)°, β =70.816(6)°, γ =78.360(6)°, V =955.4(7)Å3, Z =2, D c =1.571 Mg·m−3, and the final R 1 =0.0393, wR 2 =0.0994 for the observed reflections 2620(I >2σ(I)). The molecular geometry is almost coplanar. Viscosity, fluorescence spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry have been conducted to assess their interaction between this complex and DNA. Results showed that the copper(II) complex can increase DNA’s relative viscosity and quench the fluorescence intensity of EB bound to DNA. The adding of DNA to the solution of Cu(o-VANAHE)2 causes a slight decrease in the voltammetric current, as well as a slight shift in the E 1/2 to less negative potential. The interaction between the complex and DNA has also been investigated by submarine gel electrophoresis, interestingly, we found that the copper(II) complex can cleave circular plasmid pBR322 DNA to nicked and linear forms.
