Coastal erosion is a serious problem of concern along the southwest (SW) coast of India. Various coastal protection measures have been applied for the recovery of the coast, but the devastating effect of erosion still continues. The present study focuses on a coastal stretch situated on the southern sector of the SW coast of India, where Sundar and Sannasiraj (2006) proposed a groyne field along with an existing seawall to control severe erosion. In order to confirm the net littoral drift of this region and for a preliminary assessment of the performance of the groynes prior to construction of the proposed groyne field, two groynes were initially constructed as a pilot program in 2008-09. Periodic monitoring of shoreline position with the two groynes in place was carried out during 2009-14. A shoreline evolution model for the study region was setup, calibrated, and validated using field observations during 2010-11. In addition to traditional shoreline evolution modelling procedures, a profile simulation model was applied for simulating the shoreline behaviour during extreme monsoon seasons. The validated LITPACK model has been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed groyne field in controlling erosion, and the study also considered testing a modified transitional groyne field proposed as an alternative solution to the existing problem, and the modified transitional groyne field was found to be more effective than the prior design. A beach is expected to develop about 30–50 m within the groyne cells during the fair season which enhances the possibility of retaining a minimum beach width of 10 m during monsoon periods. Reservoirs behind dams act as deposition sites for much of the sediment being transported by rivers. As a result, the downstream river flow can be well below the transport capacity for bed-material. This promotes bed erosion and other geomorphic changes over some length of river located immediately downstream from a dam. These adjustments have been characterized for the Trinity River, TX, downstream of Livingston Dam. Field measurements and results from a 1D numerical model define a 50–60 river kilometer segment of river undergoing bed erosion as the transport capacity for bed material is reestablished. Consequences of this erosion include lowering of the channel bed, reduction in the sediment volume of channel bars, coarsening of sediment on bar tops, steepening of channel banks, and reduction in lateral migration rates of river bends. Repeat surveys of the river long profile reveals that 40 yr of dam closure has produced up to seven meters of channel-bottom incision downstream of the dam, transforming an initially linear profile into a convex-up long profile. The model output matches this observed change, providing confidence that calculated estimates for spatial and temporal changes in bed-material sediment flux can be used to explore the long-term signature of dam influence on the geomorphology of a sand-bed channel. Measurements of channel geometry, profile, lateral migration, and grain size of the lower Trinity River with distance downstream define both the trend and expected variability about the trend associated with the disruption to the bed-material load. This study is the first to simultaneously compare flow and sediment transport through a blowout and over an adjacent foredune, and the first study of flow within a highly sinuous, slot and cauldron blowout. Flow across the foredune transect is similar to that observed in other studies and is primarily modulated by across-dune vegetation density differences. Flow within the blowout is highly complex and exhibits pronounced accelerations and jet flow. It is characterised by marked helicoidal coherent vortices in the mid-regions, and topographically vertically forced flow out of the cauldron portion of the blowout. Instantaneous sediment transport within the blowout is significant compared to transport onto and/or over the adjacent foredune stoss slope and ridge, with the blowout providing a conduit for suspended sediment to reach the downwind foredune upper stoss slope and crest. Medium term (4 months) aeolian sedimentation data indicates sand is accumulating in the blowout entrance while erosion is taking place throughout the majority of the slot, and deposition is occurring downwind of the cauldron on the foredune ridge. The adjacent lower stoss slope of the foredune is accreting while the upper stoss slope is slightly erosional. Longer term (16 months) pot trap data shows that the majority of foredune upper stoss slope and crest accretion occurs via suspended sediment delivery from the blowout, whereas the majority of the suspended sediment arriving to the well-vegetated foredune stoss slope is deposited on the mid-stoss slope. The results of this study indicate one mechanism of how marked alongshore foredune morphological variability evolves due to the role of blowouts in topographically accelerating flow, and delivering significant aeolian sediment downwind to relatively discrete sections of the foredune. Soil carbon losses from sheet and interrill erosion areas have an impact on the global carbon cycle. Sediment discharged in many experiments where artificial rainfall has been applied to sloping soil surfaces show greater proportions of carbon in the sediment than found in the cohesive soil source. In many cases, conclusions drawn from these experiments fail to recognise that the enrichment of carbon in the sediment discharge is a result of unsteady conditions that occur before the steady state develops. It is known that particles of sand of different sizes move at different rates when raindrop induced salation occurs with the result that initially the particle size distribution is finer than the source but tends towards that of the source as time progresses. The presence of carbon in aggregates influences the density of aggregates. Here a qualitative model of sediment transport of sand and coal particles by raindrop induced saltation is used to demonstrate time varying enrichment of coal resulting from the effect of carbon on particle settling velocity. The model also demonstrates how the layer of loose particles that develops on top of the cohesive soil surface influences the relative amounts of carbon and sand in the sediment discharges. The steady state is not achieved until the slowest moving particle detached at the farthest distance from the downslope boundary is discharged. In this study the numerical model Delft3D is implemented on high-resolution grids to evaluate beach morphological response to groins and submerged breakwaters under sea-breeze conditions. The numerical model is compared with field measurements from three sites on the northern Yucatan coast of Mexico. At these sites, relatively low energy waves with significant wave heights arrive at a steep oblique angle to the coast that drives high sediment transport rates. After calibration of the model, by adjustment of model free parameters, the model results show accurate representations of the diurnal variation of hydrodynamic conditions (wave height and current velocity) driven by the daily sea-breezes. Moreover, the morphodynamic model shows a good representation of the rapid morphological changes, particularly of the accretion pattern caused by a temporary groin and the subsequent recovery following the structure removal. However, erosion patterns at the downdrift areas of structures were not reproduced, owing to the numerical model limitations of simulating swash morphodynamics. Model validation with field observations of the beach response behind submerged breakwaters enabled the model to be used for a parametric study. Following previous work, new equations are developed in the present study that show an improvement for predicting shoreline changes near submerged breakwaters under sea-breeze conditions. Fluid mud supported by waves can move downslope on a gentle slope under gravity to transport massive sediment across the continental shelf and cause significant geomorphological changes. In order to explore the formation and transportation of fluid mud under extreme conditions, we undertook in-situ measurements and observed fluid-mud-related processes triggered by a typhoon, Danas, in the subaqueous Changjiang Delta. Under the action of waves, firstly, the seabed was eroded slowly for ∼930 min caused by the wave-enhanced bed shear stress; next, rapid erosion occurred when the bed erodibility M e / ρ B doubled the value during no waves. The great change in bed erodibility implied that bed liquefaction occurred due to waves. The fluid mud occurred concurrently with the strongest waves and went through five stages with an interval of 0.5–3.5 h between each stage in which waves weakened continuously. In addition, the five fluid mud stages all underwent three identical phases, i.e. , formation, stabilization, and decay. In the formation and decay phases, the bottom friction force exceeded the buoyancy gravitational force, and the gradient Richardson number (Ri) was lower than the typical threshold of 0.25, indicating that fluid mud was unstable due to high turbulence energy enhanced by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. During the stabilization phase, the buoyancy gravity force was almost balanced with the drag friction force, and Ri was close to or higher than 0.25, suggesting a laminar fluid mud status. Eventually, the fluid mud disappeared when significant wave height decreased to <1.39 m. Our observation results showed that bed erosion and liquefaction both contributed to the formation of the fluid mud, and the fluid mud played an important role in sediment transportation and bed landforms in subaqueous deltas during extreme events. • Wave-induced sediment-bed liquefaction both contributed to sediment resuspension and reduced bed elevation. • Resuspended sediment settled and aggregated near seabed to form fluid mud moving downward along the slope. • Fluid mud was observed to undergo the formation, stabilization, and decay phases. The Sediment Transport and Erosion Prediction (STEP) model is methodically described in this paper. The STEP model was implemented at a 3.47 km × 3.47 km grid resolution in the Kalisapi sub-watershed, Central Java, Indonesia. It was calibrated and validated in the period of 2003–2008 and 2010–2014 respectively. The result shows that the STEP model functions satisfactorily at monthly and annual time window in the calibration and validation periods. In both periods, the STEP model is able to produce fruitful annual sediment transport rates with R2 values of 0.71 and 0.9 in the calibration and validation period respectively. Moreover, the STEP model exhibits more equitable spatial variability than that of the widely known USLE model. Correspondingly, it can be surmised that the STEP model is capable of simulating spatial and temporal variability of sediment transport from a watershed at monthly and annual time scales. • STEP model is developed to simulate soil erosion, deposition and sediment transport processes in time and space. • STEP model has been successfully implemented, calibrated and validated in the Kalisapi sub-watershed, Indonesia. • Calibrating STEP model to fit the observation is straightforward as it only needs to modify two model parameters. • STEP model source code and input data for the study area are freely available in the Bitbucket repository service. In this study, the temporal evolution of fine sediment deposits on a gravel bar is analysed during a two-year period. The time-series of fine deposit surface area is obtained using the methodology proposed in Part 1 of this work. By combining the hydro-meteorological data, the main evolutions of the fine deposits observed on the bar surface are found to be triggered by events such as natural floods, dam flushes, and strong wind valley breezes, and are quantified for each of these events. A simple processed-based flow model is proposed to investigate the sediment dynamics during the flood events, which balances the erosional/depositional processes of fine sediments. Variability in the fine deposit evolution after floods is mainly due to the different flow and sediment concentration conditions. For small events for which the gravel bar is not totally submerged, a slight erosion generally occurs. For larger events for which the gravel bar is totally submerged, a large net deposition is often observed. The fine deposit surface area time-series also shows sharp decreases of the surface deposit coverage after some strong valley breeze events, with an evolution of the same order of magnitude than floods. The application of a wind transport model shows that strong wind valley breezes can transport fine particles from the bar surface to the river channel, thus leading to a loss of fine deposits on the bar surface. Also, the deposit initial moisture is a crucial element having impact on the fine sediment transport on the bar surface. Dry deposits are much more likely to be transported than wet deposits. Decision-making in a coastal socio-ecological system involves managing a site-specific complexity arising not only from the interaction between hydrodynamic and morphological conditions, but also from the interactions between human structures and ecological systems, as well as the conflicting needs and interests of local actors. In addition, the projections of climate change impacts on coastal systems have a degree of uncertainty, which increases the general unpredictability of coastal dynamic behaviour, and adds a layer of complexity to the decision-making process. Scientific knowledge can help reduce some of the inherent uncertainties, and is essential when it comes to making sound decisions on the choice of appropriate coastal defence measures (CDMs) that are adapted to specific coastal environments and improve the resilience of coastal communities. This paper is based on a meta-analysis of 355 CDMs case studies drawn from 301 publications. From these published case studies, the objectives were to analyze the geographical and physical contexts in which CDMs monitoring was carried out and, based on the findings, to recommend areas of improvement necessary to help make sound decisions in any type of coastal environment. The meta-analysis showed that study sites are not evenly distributed around the world. Most originate from Europe (n = 106), the USA (n = 151) and Australia (n = 30), while few studies have been carried out in Africa and Asia where dense population resides in high-risk zones. Also noticeable is the absence of sites in high latitude climates where ice plays a major role in the erosion process. Five basic variables (coastal type, sediment type, wave characteristics, tidal range, and currents or sediment transport characteristics) are used in publications to characterize study sites according to their physical components. However, only 13 of the 355 sites included a complete characterization using the 5 variables, of which coastal and sediment types are the most frequently identified (77.2% and 72.7% respectively). In general, CDMs are studied in the context of unconsolidated low shore (59.4%) and in sandy environments (74.6%). Information on tidal range, wave climate, and currents, or sediment transport characteristics, is much scarcer. Since 1990, 3 of the 10 CDMs identified in the studies have received more attention than the others; these are beach nourishments, seawalls and breakwaters, with respective cumulative study sites of 164, 67 and 50. The geomorphological effects of CDMs are the most studied (55.1%), followed by ecological (31.2%), hydrodynamic (9.1%), and social (4.6%). Overall, this meta-analysis helped identify knowledge gaps regarding geographical and physical contexts in which CDMs monitoring was held. It also gave an indication of the kind of improvement necessary for global-scale adaptation planning, and for a better decision-making process to reduce coastal risks in the most vulnerable coastal communities. Finally, the analysis shows that 4.4% of the studies on defence measures include monitoring of their effects on the coastal zone. A conceptual scheme is proposed for the evaluation of adaptation solutions based on the global monitoring of coastal zones to measure coastal change trajectories in the context of climate change. Soil and gully erosion is a critical threat to sustainable agricultural land management and productivity. Soil erosion by rain splash, sheet runoff, and concentrated flow are complex problems conditioned by the combined interactions of soil physical properties, hydrology, human activity, landscape topography, and climate. Effective management of erosion processes driven by rainfall and surface runoff requires a combined effort of field observation, physical experimentation, and numerical simulation. A physically-based hydrodynamic numerical model, CCHE2D with updated raindrop erosion effects, is applied to simulate landscape evolution processes as a result of raindrop impact and overland flow. The numerical model simulates a thin layer of runoff and concentrated flow over complex terrains, and predicts sediment transport due to raindrop splash detachment, transport and soil surface erosions. Soil erosion and landform evolution simulations due to rainfall are presented for an experimental landscape and a tilled large scale agricultural field. Photogrammetric field data were collected using an unmanned aerial system (UAS) following planting and subsequent rainstorms. Numerical simulation results agreed well with the observed experimental soil surface topography, sediment yield, and drainage network developments. The simulated soil and gully erosion in the tilled field also agreed well with observations. This research successfully demonstrates how high resolution spatial and temporal topographic measurements in experimental and field landscapes can be simulated and interrogated by 2D physically-based hydrodynamic and morphodynamic models. The accurate predictions of tillage field and gully erosion process in agriculture watersheds with complex tillage conditions also indicated the usefulness of the model for studying soil and landscape degradation. Coastal dunes provide many ecosystem services including protection of infrastructure from wave overtopping and habitat for native species. Foredunes grow at different rates and assume different forms (i.e., short and wide to tall and narrow) depending on a range of factors including pre-existing beach and dune morphology, wind, wave, and water levels, sediment grain size, and vegetation characteristics, yet the relative importance of these factors on foredune growth is understudied. Here, we quantify foredune evolution (2016–2019) and explore the relative influence of a suite of metocean, sedimentary, and ecological factors for dune growth on three barrier islands in the U.S. North Carolina Outer Banks (Cape Lookout National Seashore). We incorporate observed and hindcast wind, wave, and water level data into the process-based, coupled beach-dune evolution model, Windsurf, to explore the relative contribution of factors likely to influence foredune growth at the annual timescale (2016–2017). Our cross-shore topographic profile observations show varied interannual foredune change rates and characteristics, including horizontal retreat and progradation at the dune toe and vertical erosion and accretion at the dune crest. Model results indicate that, of the factors explored, pre-existing morphology had the greatest influence on the type of foredune growth that occurred (i.e., incipient dune development, widening of the dune, and/or vertical accretion), which dramatically altered the final shape of the dune. Variations in wind and wave climates were associated with the relative contribution of marine- and aeolian-driven bed elevation changes and were particularly influential during storms. In addition, increases in the minimum elevation of vegetation on the dune profile (analogous to the cross-shore distance between the shoreline and established vegetation line, i.e., the vegetation limit, as coined by Duran and Moore, 2013) increased dune crest height and dune volume. Moreover, variations in the minimum vegetation elevation resulted in a larger range of dune crest elevations and dune volumes than differences in the median sand grain size. Soil erosion and sedimentation are major factors in landscape evolution and river morphology. The erosion resistance of sediments plays an important role in landscape evolution processes because it determines the threshold of an acting force at the initiative sediment motion, and the amount of sediment transports. This study examined the sediment properties and their correlations to the erosion resistance of mudstone deposits and laterites, which are two representative natural cohesive soils in hill and terrace topography in Taiwan. Soil physical properties and pore water chemical properties, and the erosion resistance were investigated and determined using laboratory tests and hydraulic flume experiments, respectively. Investigations of sediment properties showed that the mudstone deposits and laterites had significant differences in median particle size, soil texture, level of plasticity, internal structure, and pH value and electrical conductivity of their aqueous slurry. Results from the hydraulic flume experiments showed that the laterites had stronger erosion resistance, indicating by larger values of critical shear stress and the Shields' parameter, than the mudstone deposits. Through the stepwise multiple regression analysis, a quantitative equation was proposed to estimate the Shields' parameter using fine sediment properties including water content, clay content, and the plasticity index expressed in decimal fractions, of the two soils. Despite more experiments of the two natural soils with different ranges of the sediment properties are needed to validate the empirical equation for predicting the Shields' parameter, the proposed methodology provides an essential reference in which erosion resistance is an important parameter. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a novel coupled method for simulating the fluvial erosion, cantilever failure and bedload sediment transport to describe the overhanging properties of experimental banks and natural riverbanks. For fluvial erosion results, the previous relationships between the critical shear stress, and the erodibility coefficient indicated that they do not follow the values of the experimental works and the U-Tapao River, Thailand. Therefore, it is necessary to determine these relationships locally. The cantilever failure results revealed that the dominant failure mechanism of the experimental works is beam-type failure, while shear-type failure is the dominant failure in the U-Tapao River. Finally, a numerical model was developed based on a triple-grid approach to simulate the behaviour of a cantilever within the framework of fluvial erosion, cantilever failure, and bedload transportation. The simulated results showed good agreement with experimental results, and the U-Tapoa River in terms of the temporal variations of spatially averaged bank width, dominant failure mechanism, and overhanging block dimensions. Digital elevation models (DEMs) built from repeated topographic surveys permit producing DEM of Difference (DoD) that enables assessment of elevation variations and estimation of volumetric changes through time. In the framework of sediment transport studies, DEM differencing enables quantitative and spatially-distributed representation of erosion and deposition within the analyzed time window, at both the channel reach and the catchment scale. In this study, two high-resolution Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) derived from airborne LiDAR data (2 m resolution) acquired in 2005 and 2011 were used to characterize the topographic variations caused by sediment erosion, transport and deposition in two adjacent mountain basins (Gadria and Strimm, Vinschgau - Venosta valley, Eastern Alps, Italy). These catchments were chosen for their contrasting morphology and because they feature different types and intensity of sediment transfer processes. A method based on fuzzy logic, which takes into account spatially variable DTMs uncertainty, was used to derive the DoD of the study area. Volumes of erosion and deposition calculated from the DoD were then compared with post-event field surveys to test the consistency of two independent estimates. Results show an overall agreement between the estimates, with differences due to the intrinsic approximations of the two approaches. The consistency of DoD with post-event estimates encourages the integration of these two methods, whose combined application may permit to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the two estimations. The comparison between 2005 and 2011 DTMs allowed to investigate the relationships between topographic changes and geomorphometric parameters expressing the role of topography on sediment erosion and deposition (i.e., slope and contributing area) and describing the morphology influenced by debris flows and fluvial processes (i.e., curvature). Erosion and deposition relations in the slope-area space display substantial differences between the Gadria and the Strimm basins. While in the former erosion and deposition clusters are reasonably well discriminated, in the latter, characterized by a complex stepped structure, we observe substantial overlapping. Erosion mostly occurred in areas that show persistency of concavity or transformation from convex and flat to concave surfaces, whereas deposition prevailingly took place on convex morphologies. Less expected correspondences between curvature and topographic changes can be explained by the variable sediment transport processes, which are often characterized by alternation of erosion and deposition between different events and even during the same event. Computer based landscape evolution models can provide insight into both erosion rates and processes (i.e. sheetwash, rill, gully erosion). One important data requirement of these models is long term, high quality, high-temporal resolution rainfall data (given that the physical nature of the erosion process is strongly related to rainfall). However, in many cases such data is limited - data is often short, incomplete or not of a sufficient temporal resolution. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test the sensitivity of modelled erosion rates to small changes in rainfall input. To achieve this we firstly assess the existing rainfall data from an established weather station and secondly, stochastically generate rainfall time series based on the longest and most reliable rainfall data. We then test the sensitivity of different rainfall sequences on sediment output using a well-tested landscape evolution and sediment transport model (CAESAR-Lisflood) over a simulated period of 100 y on a proposed rehabilitated mine landform. It was found that each rainfall scenario produces a unique pattern of erosion (i.e. the location and extent of the gullies is variable). Further, each rainfall scenario produces a unique pattern of sediment output that suggests non-linear processes. Importantly, this is the first time stochastically generated rainfall has been employed in landform evolution modeling and provides a statistical approach to quantify sediment transport and landform evolution. The method demonstrates a risk based approach and allows rainfall, runoff and sediment transport studies to be conducted in data poor environments. The findings clearly demonstrate that rainfall variability can greatly affect sediment transport and form of erosion as well as landscape evolution. Experimental results involving shoreface nourishment scenarios are presented. The experiments are performed at small scale and the effects of nourishment placement and timing in relation to long-term cross-shore profile development are investigated. Four different nourishment scenarios are tested experimentally, with nourishment positioned both in the trough of a pre-developed profile as well as along the bar of the profile. The results demonstrate that under all scenarios the erosion of the shoreline slows relative to the case without nourishment. The two cases where the nourishment was placed along the bar reduced erosion of the shoreline more compared to the two cases with nourishment in the trough onshore of the bar. Compared to past experiments on nourishment presented in the literature, the present experiments were run for a longer duration, and the concepts of equilibrium profile and the development towards such an equilibrium were investigated. Curiously, the experiments showed a reversal of the sediment transport rate from being primarily offshore directed across the entire profile to onshore directed in the inner surf zone region closest to the shoreline. This reversal of transport rate occurred without changing the incoming wave conditions and resulted in deposition at the shoreline. This study aimed to evaluate the drivers of suspended sediment (SS) transport by analyzing the flood events recorded from July 2010 to June 2011 in the Celone River basin (Apulia, S-E Italy). High-resolution data of rainfall, streamflow (Q), and measurements of suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) were used to carry out the multivariate analysis. Among the initial 18 variables, the Principal Component Analysis revealed that total volume (m3), peak discharge (Qmax, m3/s), and the flood duration were the most important factors influencing SS transport. Total rainfall and total kinetic energy recorded in the gauging station located in the lowland were also important factors, whereas the same rainfall variables recorded in the remote mountainous area of the basin had a minor influence on SS transport. Antecedent moisture conditions were significantly correlated only with the initial discharge of the flood. Hysteresis loops between SSC and Q were analyzed for each flood event by using the hysteresis index (HI). Results showed that this catchment was dominated by anticlockwise loops (negative values of HI) representative of delayed SS transport and of distant SS source areas in terms of the gauging station. These results also suggested that soil erosion from hillslopes was the dominant process compared with channel and bank erosion and that there was no exhaustion of sediment availability in the basin. The study shows that the model is able to identify soil-eroded areas and replicate the scale and variation patterns of sediment production, although not with great precision. Predicting coastal erosion requires an accurate morphodynamic model. XBeach has been widely adopted to simulate storm-induced coastal erosion. Because of the large number of model input parameters and their uncertainties, sensitivity analysis is a crucial step toward reliable results. This requires running a large number of computationally expensive simulations. Here, we adopt a computationally cost-effective approach based on the Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos Expansion method to quantify the sensitivity of XBeach to its input parameters. The method is applied to the coastal erosion event caused by Hurricane Sandy along the barrier islands of New Jersey in the United States. The results show a spatial variation of the model sensitivity with increasing boundary conditions. A new modeling platform was developed to simulate spatially distributed sediment production and transport in agricultural landscapes. The sediment production at the grid scale was computed using the stand-alone Water Erosion Prediction Project-Hillslope Erosion code, while an advection-dispersion equation represented sediment transport. The model's performance was tested in the Water Resources and Erosion watersheds at the Oklahoma and Central Plains Agricultural Research Center, El Reno, OK, USA. Results showed that this modeling approach could capture the complex behavior of sediment under different management practices in the watersheds. The modeling framework provides mechanistic processes to simulate the fate and transport of sediment across the watershed at spatio-temporal scales that are useful in assessing the environmental impacts of management schemes. A simulation based on a hydro-sedimentary model was conducted for the period between summer 2010 and spring 2012 in the Gulf of Lion (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) to understand the spatial and temporal variability of sediment transport, erosion and deposition on the continental shelf and slope. Datasets of both simulated and observed current, temperature and suspended matter from the shelf and the Cap de Creus Canyon which is the main export route towards the continental slope, were first compared to assess the reliability of the simulation. The simulation shows the massive sediment accumulation near the Rhone River mouth (∼56 % of the inputs), the accretion along the mid-shelf mud belt, and the impact of dense shelf water cascading on sediment resuspension and erosion inside the Cap de Creus Canyon. The two studied autumn–winter periods were strongly contrasted in terms of meteorological conditions and subsequent impacts on the sediment dynamics. During the first period (2010–2011) dominated by marine storms, the shelf sediment underwent strong changes, the Rhone River sediment load accumulated in a relatively small area, stock of littoral sands moved to the inner shelf (20–40 m) while inner shelf fine particles fed the mid-shelf mud belt and the upper Cap de Creus Canyon. During the second period (2011–2012) with very little marine wind and a particularly cold winter, sediment on the shelf underwent little change except for a southwestward growth of the Rhone River prodeltaic deposit. Sediment from the southwestern end of the shelf as well as from the upper Cap de Creus Canyon was flushed toward deeper reaches by dense shelf water cascading. Cascading also had a more moderate impact in the various canyons incising the continental shelf. Our work supports the view of an unbalanced sedimentary system, with a deficit mainly over the inner shelf, whose main driver is probably the strong and fast reduction of particulate matter inputs from the Rhone River (by a factor of 4 in less than one century). Flooding and erosion are among the most relevant hazards for coastal regions and although they are linked, their inherent complexity has typically led them to be addressed separately, potentially leading to highly uncertain estimates. This paper has three aims: (a) to present a methodology for coupling coastal flood projections with shoreline changes; (b) to quantify the effects of neglecting the coupling of flooding and erosion on future projections at a case study location; and (c) to analyse the relative importance of the climate-related uncertainty sources. We use a suite of statistical, process-based, and physics-based models to generate and downscale storms, compute water levels affected by storm morphodynamics and long-term profile changes and propagate flooding over topo-bathymetries that are in turn modified to incorporate the impact of sea-level rise, longshore sediment transport and storm-driven erosion. We sample climate uncertainty by considering storm variability (synthetic generation) and ensembles of radiative forcing scenarios, regional climate models, and sea-level rise trajectories. For illustration purposes, we consider a 40-km coastal stretch in the Spanish Mediterranean. We find that if the effect of erosion is neglected, the mean values of the total water level and flooded area can be either over- or underestimated by up to 18% and 22%, and up to 7% and 85%, respectively, with respect to our coupled results. The factors that most influence total water levels are storm erosion and profile geometry, highlighting the relevance of using real profiles in shoreface translation. In the flooded area, longshore transport can play a fundamental enhancing role. We also find that the coupling approach used can contribute more to the projection of flooded areas than the choice of climate models and sea-level rise trajectories even by 2100 (up to 76% versus 8% and 16%, respectively). The tropical Andes has been less studied in terms of erosion processes in comparison to other major mountain ranges in the world. Environmental gradients are steepest along the western flank of the Andes that is characterized by marked differences in vegetation, rough topography with deeply incised canyons, and highly variable and extreme precipitation patterns. Previous efforts mostly focused on sediment fluxes in large rivers draining to e.g. the Amazon basin while small to medium-sized rivers such as the ones flowing towards the Pacific Ocean have been relegated. They highlighted the link between sediment yield, anthropogenic and natural factors, e.g. climate, topography, river runoff, lithology and vegetation cover. In this study, we identified the spatial patterns of specific sediment yield along the western slopes of the Peruvian Andes between 3° and 13° S latitude for 21 catchments. We collected and analysed data from 22 environmental factors to elucidate their importance on spatially varying sediment yield. The sediment load was derived from gauging stations, reservoir sedimentation and water turbidity over a 30-yr period. The specific sediment yield varies strongly along the Peruvian western Andes as a consequence of the spatial variation in climate, topography and land cover controlling sediment production and transport. We reported higher-than-average specific sediment yields for the central part (6°-11°S) with values of 2130 and 2300 t km−2 yr−1 and low and uniform yields of 39 to 551 t km−2 yr−1 in the southern part (11° − 14.5° S). Given the scarcity of data on sediment yield, we included an uncertainty assessment based on bootstrapping approaches as to get a better grasp on the potential range of specific sediment yields in the study region. Using statistical techniques including Spearman correlation rank, univariate and multivariate regression analyses, we were able to determine the importance of the 22 environmental variables on the specific sediment yield. About 55 % of the observed variance can be explained by river discharge (Q 90) and river steepness index (ks 50). By adding an anthropogenic variable based on land cover, the explained variance in SSY increases up to 63 %, however, the effects of land cover on specific sediment yield are not clear because of spurious correlation between land cover, river discharge and topography. Monitoring turbidity and Surface Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSSC) of inland waters is essential to address several important issues: erosion, sediment transport and deposition throughout watersheds, reservoir siltation, water pollution, human health risks, etc. This is especially important in regions with limited conventional monitoring capacities such as West Africa. In this study, we explore the use of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data (MODIS, MOD09Q1 and MYD09Q1 products, red (R) and near infrared (NIR) bands) to monitor turbidity and SSSC for the Bagre Reservoir in Burkina Faso. High values ​​of these parameters associated with high spatial and temporal variability potentially challenge the methodologies developed so far for less turbid waters. Field measurements (turbidity, SSSC, radiometry) are used to evaluate different radiometric indices. The NIR/R ratio is found to be the most suited to retrieve SSSC and turbidity for both in-situ spectoradiometer measurements and satellite reflectance from MODIS. The spatio temporal variability of MODIS NIR/R together with rainfall estimated by the Tropical Rainforest Measuring Mission (TRMM) and altimetry data from Jason-2 is analyzed over the Bagre Reservoir for the 2000–2015 period. It is found that rain events of the early rainy season (February-March) through mid-rainy season (August) are decisive in triggering turbidity increase. Sediment transport is observed in the reservoir from upstream to downstream between June and September. Furthermore, a significant increase of 19% in turbidity values is observed between 2000 and 2015, mainly for the July to December period. It is especially well marked for August, with the central and downstream areas showing the largest increase. The most probable hypothesis to explain this evolution is a change in land use, and particularly an increase in the amount of bare soils, which enhances particle transport by runoff. Tropical regions have experienced the fastest Land Use Land Cover Change (LULCC) in the last decades, coupled with climate change (CC) this has affected the hydrological and geomorphological processes of river systems. With the increased demand for land, the general trend has been the loss of forest land to agriculture and settlements. These changes have altered the water balance components through enhanced or reduced evaporation, peak flow, flooding, and river morphology. The aim of this review paper is to provide a meta -analysis on the effects of spatiotemporal changes in climate and LULC on river hydro-morphology in the tropics. Following a systematic search, 60 case studies were identified, of which the majority (68%) experienced forest loss due to agricultural and urban expansion, resulting in increased streamflow, surface flow, and total water yield and decreased ET and groundwater recharge. 12% of the case studies showed the impacts of LULCC on channel morphology features through sediment transport and riverbank erosion. Results from this study show limited correlation between LULCC and hydrological variables, indicating that there are likely other factors controlling hydrological processes. Catchment heterogeneity including soil and topography play an important role. Based on studies that project these changes into the future, similar trends are expected over the next decades, with differences based on LU and climate scenarios. There are still limited studies on river hydro-morphology responses to LULCC and CC in the tropics despite the major changes taking place there. Large-scale coastal erosion in the Mekong Delta has been dramatically increasing in severity in recent decades. There are several effective hard engineering solutions that have been implemented in this delta to efficiently prevent coastal erosion and stimulate sedimentation while supporting the local ecosystem conservation. These measures include Pile-Rock Breakwaters (PRBW), Hollow Triangle Breakwaters (HTB) and Semicircular Breakwaters (SBW). However, research on the sediment transport, morphological changes and toe erosion for these offshore breakwaters is very limited and is currently in the initial stages of understanding the specific conditions of sediment characteristics and foundations. The objective of this study was to reproduce the morphological changes and toe erosion of three breakwaters due to wave-structure interactions. This was investigated using 2D physical models with 3000 irregular waves during 8 experimental hours (equal to 15,000*T p). To extract the bed morphological changes and toe erosion both specialized laser measurements (SW50M laser ruler) and analysis of high-speed video recording by images digitalization were applied. The experimental results show that the shape and structural design of offshore breakwaters can have a significant influence on the bed morphology on both the seaside and the leeside. We found that generally the toe of the construction on the seaside was eroded due to the occurrence of reflected waves, and that the flow is narrowed while passing through the construction, increasing the flow velocity and causing toe erosion. Additionally, the accretion of sediment at the leeside of the breakwaters was found to be mainly driven by the transport of sediment through the construction. Comparing the breakwater designs the experimental results showed that the HTB has the maximum accretion rate behind the structure, as well as the fastest accretion rate behind the breakwater. The SBW has high wave energy dissipation efficiency, although the toe erosion rate is faster than the other classes of breakwaters. The PRBW shows the fastest toe erosion rate in front of the structure and causes accretion at the leeside of the construction but at a lower rate than the HTB. The findings from this study will help practical designers to reinforce the foot of construction during real breakwater designing and inform stability calculations. The water and sediment regulation schemes (WSRS) orientated by dams have profoundly adjusted the hydrological process and geomorphological evolution of the lower Yellow River and delta. Two decades since the implementation of WSRS, the observed multidisciplinary datasets allowed us to systematically evaluate the impacts of this unprecedented engineering effort on the river-coastal system. The sediment fluxes transported to the sea showed a notable rebounded and coarsened process due to the erosion of the riverbed during the WSRS periods. The average median grain size of suspended sediment increased from 17.7 μm in the 1990 s to 26 μm in 2002–2009. The natural rhythm of hydrological process is fundamentally altered by WSRS, about 50% and 30% of annual sediments and water delivered to the sea for only 20 days. The water discharge system is more temporally dynamic and complex with higher dimensionality after the operation of WSRS. The erosion pattern has been a dominant feature in all the channel segments downstream the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, with an average total erosion volume of 1.02 × 108 m3/a after the WSRS. However, the erosion efficiency of the lower river showed a decreased trend, due to the riverbed had formed a coarse armored substrate for the continued scouring since 2002. The YRD has changed from the pattern of erosion to progradation for the increase of sediment supply, and the average growth rate of subaerial delta was about 6.89 km2/a during 2003–2014. However, fully capturing the variations in sediment connectivity at the event scale and revealing their impact on watershed sediment sources remains challenging. Herein, we established an event-based model to assess sediment connectivity by integrating runoff factors. The spatiotemporal variability of sediment connectivity was evaluated for 58 rainfall events in three heterogeneous watersheds. The degree of sediment connectivity served as an indicator to quantify the proportion of potential sediment transport from units to the watershed outlet, with 1 indicating that the eroded sediment can be fully connected and 0 indicating that it cannot be transported. Moreover, the controls of sediment connectivity on watershed sediment sources and yield were determined. Our results indicated that the watersheds with poor vegetation and dense gullies were characterized by high sediment connectivity during all the rainfall events. The connectivity degree was below 0.5 in approximately 80 % of the watershed area, suggesting that most of the eroded sediment was deposited. Rainfall amount and duration dominated the degree of connectivity of the distal hillslopes, while rainfall intensity exerted a primary control on the transport of sediments from riverbanks to the outlet. In addition, the increase of mismatched area between sediment connectivity and erosion resulted in the decrease of sediment yield. The interaction between sediment connectivity and erosion effectively explained the spatial patterns of sediment sources (p < 0.05). Our work confirmed that the coupled erosion model and sediment connectivity predicted the sediment yield accurately. The predictions for different watersheds portrayed that the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency and Willmott's agreement index were greater than 0.70 and 0.89, respectively. Broken foreland basins are caused by crustal-scale contractional basement structures that compartmentalize (or break) a contiguous retroarc or collisional foreland basin into smaller disconnected basins. Broken foreland basins differ from their unbroken counterparts in their deformational, depositional, and geodynamic framework. Whereas contiguous (unbroken) foreland basins are generated mainly by regional flexural loading due to shortening of supracrustal cover strata and uppermost basement in organized ramp-flat thrust systems, broken foreland basins are governed principally by isolated topographic loads and structural tilting associated with widely spaced crustal-scale reverse faults that accommodate intraplate basement shortening. These structural contrasts foster either décollement-style fold-thrust belts (orogenic wedges) with large integrated erosional drainage systems (watersheds) spanning diverse sediment source regions (including thin-skinned fold-thrust belts, elevated hinterland zones, accreted terranes, and magmatic arcs) or independent foreland block uplifts with local drainage systems dominated by basement sources. Although the genesis of broken foreland basins has been uniquely attributed to flat slab subduction, these basins are also sensitive to inherited structural, stratigraphic, thermal, and rheological configurations, as well as synorogenic mass redistribution in relationship to climate, erosion, sediment transport efficiency, and sediment accumulation. Despite the many modern and ancient examples, questions persist over the underlying geodynamic processes that promote development of a broken or compartmentalized foreland basin instead of a single regionally unified flexural foreland basin. Additional uncertainties and misconceptions surround the criteria used to define broken foreland basins and their linkages to subduction dynamics (chiefly slab geometry), strain magnitude, and structural reactivation. Here we review the tectonic framework of broken foreland basins—with emphasis on South and North America (Pampean and Laramide provinces)—and propose that their genesis can be ascribed to a combination of: (i) underlying conditions in the form of tectonic inheritance, including precursor structural, stratigraphic, thermal, and rheological heterogeneities and anisotropies; and (ii) mechanical triggers, such as increased stress, enhanced horizontal stress transmission, and/or selective crustal strengthening or weakening. Patagonia is a key place to analyze the climatic trends (waves and winds) of the Southern Hemisphere. The northern coast of the San Matías Gulf (" Bahía Sin fondo " for the original Spanish descriptions) is characterized by an attached sand barrier developed on top of former cliffs. Morphological features are indicating changes in the regional slope when the sea level drowned the depression of the gulf. An original eastern slope was progressively replaced by slopes towards the south. The availability of sand during the transgression and maximum sea level was directed to the east due to the dominant westerly winds. Sand dunes accumulated on top of former cliffs and today –due to coastal erosion-, remain as cliff-top dunes. A conceptual model for the formation of these cliff-top barriers is described in relation to the fluctuation of the sea level and the sand migration, which was studied through mineralogical analysis comparing the different environments: cliff, beach, and dunes. The Paraná River is one of the world's largest fluvial systems due to its discharge. During the last 30 years, water discharge has averaged 18,389 m3 s−1 downstream of the Paraguay-Paraná confluence, where its most important tributaries, the Paraguay and the upper Paraná rivers contribute 22% and 78% of its total discharge, respectively. However, the sedimentological dynamics of this system behaves peculiarly due to the influence of the Bermejo River, a tributary of the Paraguay River. Even though the contribution of the Bermejo River discharge represents only 2% of the Paraná River discharge, its input of suspended sediments is significant due to the erosive processes in the upper Bermejo basin. Most earlier studies have primarily focused on the contributions and dynamics of the wash load (silt and clay) from the Bermejo River through the Paraguay River to the Paraná River, and neglected the relevance of fine and very fine sands (coarser than 63 μm). These sediment fractions play a key role in bed sediment composition, roughness, and bed forms, ultimately modifying the flow resistance and the morphodynamic processes, among other environmental and biological parameters. This study seeks to quantify the suspended sediment contribution of the main tributaries of the middle Paraná River during the last three decades. In particular, water discharge, sediment transport and grain size data measured at gage stations located at the Paraguay River upper reach, the Bermejo River, and the upper and middle reaches of the Paraná River are analyzed. Focus is placed on the coarse suspended sediment fraction. Additionally, the authors collected sediment samples at different river cross-sections and water discharges. The temporal analysis revealed the dynamic behavior of the sediments along the system. The results show different behaviors of the wash load and suspended sand transport provided by the Bermejo River. Along the middle Paraná reach, results suggest a significant suspended coarse fraction deposition during the highest sediment input period. Bed sediments, in turn, are re-suspended during the months with low contributions from the Bermejo and/or during the high water levels stages of the Paraná. Shorelines bordering ebb deltas are often subject to deformation by the approach and attachment of ebb-tidal shoals. Although this is a common behaviour, little attention has been paid to the link between shoal migration and the multi-annual development of the adjacent beach-dune system. This study aims to understand beach-dune systems' behaviour during the approach phase of an ebb-tidal shoal attachment event. Topographic and bathymetric data of the barrier island of Texel (NL) was used to calculate shoreline position, beach and dune volume, dunefoot position, and shoal displacement rates. Two classical beach-dune interaction models were used to understand the observed behaviour: the surfzone-beach-dune model and the sediment budget model. The analysis revealed how a larger bank on the land-facing side of the ebb delta split into two smaller shoals with different morphological behaviours. One of the shoals (S1) moved consistently landwards, recently attaching the shore, whereas the second shoal (S2) is still evolving and presents a milder landward movement than S1. In parallel to the landward movement of S1, the adjacent coastline was subject to erosion, partially counterbalanced by nourishments. However, despite the erosion, dunes are growing in volume, suggesting a net positive transfer of sand from the beach to the dunes. In the surfzone-beach-dune model, regular nourishments positively affect beach state by maintaining sufficient beach size for aeolian sediment transport and reducing shoreline erosion. In the budget model, dune volume growth may occur despite a slightly negative beach budget. Framing Texel in the budget model implies that the beach budget before the start of the approach phase is crucial in defining the behaviour of the dune system during this phase. If the shoal approach significantly reduces the beach budget, the system may cross the budget threshold that dune building is possible. Thus, the dune system may evolve to an erosional state, including dune ridge dissection and blowout development. Hence, nourishments have been essential in keeping the current morphological state during the attachment of the shoal, as they restrict the system from crossing the negative morphological threshold. A coastal inflection of ∼45 km in the extreme south of Brazil demonstrates differences in coastline behavior with areas of deposition towards north and areas of severe erosion towards south, threatening coastal occupation. These areas are believed to be controlled by the sand wave behavior of the coastline with adjacent erosion and progradation areas that have relevant alongshore sediment transport imposed by S quadrant waves. In this study, we quantified the rates of change of coastline and described the erosion and deposition controls behind it, using ultra-high-resolution orbital images and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) orthomosaics obtained between 2005 and 2020 for three urbanized beach sectors within the area, i.e., the São Simão, Mostardense, and Lighthouse Beaches. The rates of change of coastline were calculated using the change polygon method. The results indicated total recession values > 40 m at the Mostardense and Lighthouse beaches corresponding to a rate of ∼3 m/y. Such values characterized the coastal erosive hotspots that have not been previously identified in the area. Future coastlines were projected from the estimated annual variation rates. Buildings previously destroyed or threatened by marine/wind processes were also mapped. • Linkage between soil surface microrelief and overland flow was examined. • Differently oriented wheel tracks served as water flow paths or as sediment sinks. • Increase of surface connectivity after a rain was shown by functional connectivity. • Structural connectivity showed reorganization of the surface runoff pathways. Although wheel tracks cover only a small portion of the surface of agricultural fields, their effect on surface runoff and sediment transport is substantial. Wheel tracks change the microrelief of the soil surface, and influence how the surface is further altered by rainfall and runoff. This study presents a plot-scale microrelief analysis of a tilled surface with wheel tracks under simulated rainfall. Digital elevation models of the microrelief with 1 cm spatial resolution were obtained using the Structure from Motion method. The random roughness, the structural connectivity, and functional connectivity were calculated for before-rainfall and after-rainfall soil surface conditions. The experiments were carried out on inclined, freshly-tilled plots (8 m long, 2 m wide). The wheel tracks were created by four passages of machinery in the slope direction (SWT) and in the contour-line direction (CWT). The experiments were compared to reference plots without wheel tracks (NWT). The wheel tracks increase water and sediment connectivity if they are oriented in slope-wise direction. Microrelief analysis shows that SWT drains water from the surrounding soil. The soil surface adjacent to SWT can also become more connected with the wheel track, due to changes in microrelief introduced by rainfall and runoff. The calculated higher connectivity in the SWT plot corresponded to the measured increased sediment loads. This suggests faster overland flow and therefore shorter flow pathways on the soil surface microrelief. CWT leads to a decrease in the water and sediment connectivity compared to the NWT and SWT plots. Although the surface runoff can overflow the CWT, the network of flow paths results in decreased flow velocity and a slower sediment transport rate. However, the CWT effect is not permanent, and declines as the wheel tracks become silted with the deposited sediment. It is shown that detailed microrelief data provide relevant information for a study of the changes in flow routing in a tilled agricultural field with the presence of a wheel track. SWT accelerates the runoff and especially the sediment transport. During a rainfall event, the hydraulic connection between the wheel track and the surrounding soil increases dramatically. CWT reduces the surface runoff and also the sediment transport. In the long term, rainfall events and surface runoff alter the microrelief connectivity, causing the soil surface to be more hydraulically connected, irrespective of the wheel track orientation. This study demonstrates the effect of wheel tracks on water and sediment transport. The results draw attention to the importance of appropriate soil protection measures, as a bare unprotected surface microrelief exposed to rainfall leads to increased sediment connectivity. Rill erosion on frozen-stony slope in high-altitude or high-latitude areas commonly undergo freeze–thaw cycle, which is significantly influenced by partially thawed soil with rock fragment. This research aims to investigate the influences of thawed soil depth (TSD) and rock fragment content (RFC) on rill erosion and quantifying the mathematical relationships among them. The laboratory experiment is conducted to evaluate the influences of TSD (1, 2, 5, and 10 cm) and RFC (0%, 10%, 20%, and 50%) on sediment delivery processes by concentrated meltwater flow under three slope gradients of 5°, 10°, and 15°, and three flow rates of 1, 2, and 4 L min−1 at nine rill lengths from 0.5 m to 8.0 m. Five runoff samples are obtained from each experiment run and used to calculate sediment concentration (SC). The SC increases linearly and then exponentially with rill length to approximate the extremum and fits well with piecewise functions. Restrictive effect of TSD and RFC on sediment supply is evident during linear stage induced by shallow TSD, which keeps a long distance under shallow TSD and low RFC to collect sufficient sediment for exponential period. However, TSD and RFC impacts become apparent during the exponential period and lead to higher sediment yield with RFC of 10% and 20% than that on totally thawed soil without rock fragment. In this research, the positive effect on sediment yield increases with RFC increases from 10% to 20%, which may need to be eliminated for efficiency in erosion control. In contrast to low RFC, the protection impact of rock fragment always exerts with RFC of 50%. The experimental data and the functional relationship can provide the basic knowledge for evaluating the model parameters such as soil detachment rate and erodibility of rill erosion on frozen-stony slope. Sediment transport in alluvial rivers is critical to reshape channel morphology and to the global geochemical cycle. This study reports a detailed investigation into the contributions of different sources to sediment transport in the Middle Yangtze River (MYR). It is found that: (i) after the operation of the Three Gorges Project (TGP), the dominant sediment source in the MYR changed from the upstream input to the fluvial erosion and tributary input, with the upstream input providing 38% of the outlet sediment amount in the MYR and the fluvial erosion and tributary input providing around 39% and 23%, respectively; (ii) river bed erosion contributed to 21% of the transported sediment after the TGP, whereas bank erosion contributed to around 18%, which was estimated to be 2 times larger if bank protection works were not constructed after the TGP; (iii) in terms of the sediment transport processes of different fractions after the TGP, the fraction of fine sediment (diameter d ≤ 0.31 mm) in the MYR mainly came from the upstream and tributary input, and the fraction of medium sediment (0.31 mm < d ≤ 0.125 mm) almost equally came from each source, whereas the fraction of coarse sediment (d > 0.125 mm) was primarily eroded from the bed and banks. Besides, the MYR was transformed from a transport-limited river system into a supply-limited one after the TGP operation, with the total amount of sediment supply accounting for 21% of its transport capacity under current flow and boundary conditions. The development of bed armoring in the main stream and the construction of various river regulation works, would result in a further decrease in the sediment supply rate of the MYR in the future. • An integrated 1D morphodynamic model was proposed covering three different modules. • Bank erosion and accretion processes in the braided reach of the LYR were simulated. • Large-scale bank deformation played an important role in the channel evolution. The braided reach of the Lower Yellow River (LYR) often experienced dramatic channel evolution during flood seasons, with both bed and bank deformations occurring simultaneously, which led to several negative effects such as land loss, channel migration and overbank flooding. A coupled one-dimensional model was proposed to simulate both bed evolution and bank deformation, including three modules of flow-sediment transport, bed deformation, and bank erosion and accretion. The proposed model was applied respectively to simulate the longitudinal and lateral channel deformations in the braided reach in the years of 2018 and 2006, in order to conduct detailed processes of model calibration and verification. The results indicate that: the proposed model can accurately simulate the flow and sediment transport processes, and the majority of the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients (NSEs) were larger than 0.60 between the calculated and measured hydrographs of water discharge, water level and sediment concentration at different sections, with the maximum value up to 0.96; the calculated erosion and accretion widths of the riverbanks closely agreed with the measured data, and the absolute errors between the calculated and measured post-flood reach-scale bankfull widths were 18 m in 2018 and 14 m in 2006, with the relative errors of 1.7% and 1.3%; the effects of riverbank deformation on sediment discharge, flow velocity and channel deformation were also analyzed, which indicate that the module of riverbank erosion and accretion can play a significant role in predicting hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes in the braided reach of the LYR. • Differential travel rates cause particle size distributions to vary with time. • Sediment discharges peak at drop size dependent flow depths. • Sediment concentrations increase before declining as flow depth tends to zero. In laboratory experiments undertaken using sand on a sloping surface in the 1970s, it was observed that while fine material moved as suspended load, fine to medium sand was induced to saltate as the result of raindrop impacts whereas coarse sand and gravel were induced to roll. The particle size distribution of the sediment discharge was initially much finer than the original bed and coarsened with time to approach that of the bed as time passed. At the time the exact nature of the raindrop induced transport mechanisms was not well known. Later, experiments using an apparatus that enabled the depth and velocity of rain-impacted flow to be controlled over an eroding surface, showed that raindrops induced some particles to travel limited distances that depended on a number of factors including flow velocity and particle size and density. The resultant differential travel rates of particles of different size and density provided an explanation as to why particle size distributions of sediments discharged by rain-impacted flows vary temporally, and why a non-cohesive layer develops on top of the surface of the cohesive matrix soil. The formation of the non-cohesive layer is indicative of erosion being transport limited when raindrop induced saltation occurs. The experiments also showed that sediment discharges produced by rain-impacted flows peaked at a drop size dependent flow depth so that a function that accounts for the interaction between raindrop size and flow depth could be developed for drops impacting at close to their terminal velocities. One of the implications of the observed responses to variations in rainfall and flow conditions is that the assumption that rain has certain erosive power that is defined simply by the product of flow discharge and rainfall factors such as rainfall intensity or the kinetic energy flux is a false assumption. Global deltas are facing severe challenges under the impacts of riverine sediment decline and large estuarine projects. Comparing with abundant research on the Yangtze subaqueous delta, the shoals in shallow waters are poorly understood. The Hengsha Shoal, Yangtze Delta, China, expands during the past ∼65 years, with only slight changes during the pre-projects period and remarkable variations in the projects period. It's now half-surrounded by the Hengsha Reclamation Project and the Deep Waterway Project, both facilitating the recent expansion. The current vertical net rate of change in the study area is −2.2 cm/yr, suggesting an overall balance between sediment deposition and erosion. Spatially, the Hengsha Shoal is currently changing from horizontal expansion to vertical accretion. Considering the spatial patterns of erosion/deposition and residual currents and sediment, modern geomorphic changes in the Hengsha Shoal appear to be dominated by internal sediment transport from deep to shallow waters. Considering further possible changing conditions, the future evolution of this shoal and the resulting potential ecological impacts should be studied further. Lacustrine deltas that develop upstream of landslide-dammed lakes can trap and store fluvial sediments. The development of these deltas and their size are conditioned by the geometry of the dam, which is in turn influenced by the landslide rheology. In this study, we back-analyze the formation of the Hintersee landslide-dammed lake in southeastern Germany and investigate the impact of landslide rheology on lake volume and sediment trapping capacity. We use the Voellmy rheology, a rheological model defined by two parameters, μ and ξ , and find that landslide rheology strongly influences sediment trapping. The Voellmy dry friction μ shows a non-linear relationship with lake volume and sediment trapping, while the velocity squared drag ξ has less impact. The Hintersee landslide dam presents a sediment trapping capacity of up to three times the volume of the landslide-dammed lake. Thus, the impact of landslide dams on sediment transport is underestimated by up to a factor of 3 when using lake volume as a proxy for sediment trapping capacity. We find that friction exhibits a non-linear relationship with lake volume and sediment trapping, while velocity has a more limited influence. • Landslide rheology and valley geometry (accommodation space) exert a nonlinear influence on lake and sediment trap capacities. • The sediment trapping capacity of landslide dams is for a significant part subaerial (2/3 here). • Local erosion rates and the history of the dam can be reconstructed using a sediment budget. In this study, we modified and applied an open source CFD software package, the TELEMAC, to simulate sediment transport and bed morphology on a meandering stretch of Nakdong River, between Gangjeong and Dalsung Weirs, whose length is about 20 km. The numerical simulations have been carried out on a High Performance Computing Cluster (HPC) with the real river bathymetry and with different operation scenarios of the weirs. The hydrodynamic parameters and bed evolutions obtained from the numerical results have been validated against field observation data. This paper concerns numerical modelling of the impact on the littoral drift and the shoreline from groynes forming a field of equidistant and identical groynes. The most important effect of a groyne on the shoreline morphology is that the littoral drift is blocked completely or partially. A local reduction in the littoral drift around the groyne introduces alongshore gradients in the alongshore sediment transport and sedimentation and erosion around the groyne which will cause re-orientation of the bed contours towards the prevailing wave direction until an equilibrium is reached. A discussion of this mechanism is presented including effects of scales, e.g. the effect of the relative length of the groynes (compared to the width of the surf zone). The model results indicate a strong dependency of the reduction in littoral drift on the initial geometric bypass ratio (Q geo *), which is defined from the groyne length and the littoral transport on the undisturbed coastline; Q geo * is the transport occurring outside the tip of the groynes divided by the total transport. The erosion, transport and fate of sediments and associated contaminants are known to be influenced by both particle characteristics and the flow dynamics imparted onto the sediment. The influential role of bitumen containing hydrophobic sediments and the microbial community on sediment dynamics are however less understood. This study links an experimental evaluation of sediment erosion with measured sediment-associated contaminant concentrations and microbial community analysis to provide an estimate of the potential for sediment to control the erosion, transport and fate of contaminants. Specifically the paper addresses the unique behaviour of hydrophobic sediments and the role that the microbial community associated with hydrophobic sediment may play in the transport of contaminated sediment. Results demonstrate that the hydrophobic cohesive sediment demonstrates unique transport and particle characteristics (poor settling and small floc size). Biofilms were observed to increase with consolidation/biostabilization times and generated a unique microbial consortium relative to the eroded flocs. Natural oil associated with the flocs appeared to be preferentially associated with microbial derived extracellular polymeric substances. While PAHs and naphthenic acid increased with increasing shear (indicative of increasing loads), they tended to decrease with consolidation/biostabilization (CB) time at similar shears suggesting a chemical and/or biological degradation. PAH and napthenic acid degrading microbes decreased with time as well, which may suggest that there was a reduced pool of PAHs and naphthenic acids available resulting in their die off. This study emphasizes the importance that any management strategies and operational assessments for the protection of human and aquatic health incorporate the sediment (suspended and bed sediment) and biological (biofilm) compartments and the energy dynamics within the system in order to better predict contaminant transport. Experimental measurements are obtained to investigate the detailed hydrodynamics of wave–wave interactions in the swash-zone. Two bores are generated using a double dam-break mechanism and interact on a 1:10 impermeable rough slope. Measurements of the hydrodynamics are obtained via acoustic displacement sensors and a combined particle image velocimetry and laser induced fluorescent system. Two types of interactions are investigated: wave capture, with the second bore reaching the first one during the uprush, and weak wave–backwash interactions when interaction happens during the backwash of the first wave. The relative strength of the bores at the initial shoreline and time between their arrivals determines the initial type of interaction, however the type as well as the intensity of the interaction may vary throughout the swash-zone for the same swash event. During wave capture and weak wave–backwash interactions, the fluid of the first bore is advected upwards, then mixed with the fluid of the second bore by intense shearing and highly turbulent vortices generated at the front of the second bore because of the relative velocity differences between the two bores. The details of the hydrodynamics during interaction confirm the potential of swash–swash interactions to suspend sediment and transport it shoreward or interrupt seaward sediment transport. Using a dam removal on the Ashuelot River in southern New Hampshire, we test how a sudden, spatially non-uniform increase in river slope alters sediment transport dynamics and riparian sediment connectivity. Site conditions were characterized by detailed pre- and post-removal field surveys and high-resolution aerial lidar data, and locations of erosion and deposition were predicted through one-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling. The Homestead Dam was a ~ 200 year old, 4 m high, 50 m wide crib dam that created a 9.5 km long, relatively narrow reservoir. Following removal, an exhumed resistant bed feature of glaciofluvial boulders located 400 m upstream and ~ 2.5 m lower than the crest of the dam imposed a new boundary condition in the drained reservoir, acting as a grade control that maintained a backwater effect upstream. During the 15 months following removal, non-uniform erosion in the former reservoir totaled ~ 60,000 m 3 (equivalent to ~ 9.3 cm when averaged across the reservoir). Net deposition of ~ 10,700 m 3 was measured downstream of the dam, indicating most sediment from the reservoir was carried more than 8 km downstream beyond the study area. The most pronounced bed erosion occurred where modeled sediment transport increased in the downstream direction, and deposition occurred both within and downstream of the former reservoir where modeled sediment transport decreased in the downstream direction. We thus demonstrate that spatial gradients in sediment transport can be used to predict locations of erosion and deposition on the stream bed. We further observed that bed incision was not a necessary condition for bank erosion in the former reservoir. In this characteristically narrow and shallow reservoir lacking abundant dam-induced sedimentation, the variable resistance of the bed and banks acted as geomorphic constraints. Overall, the response deviated from the common conceptual model of knickpoint erosion and channel widening due to dam removal. With thousands of dams likely to be considered for removal or repair in the coming decades, this study helps to advance predictions of the geomorphic response to dam removal and contributes to a broader understanding of the variability in both style and timing of fluvial responses to disturbances. Sediment transport and resulting local scour in marine and coastal environments can lead to the failure of structures. The knowledge and understanding of erosion and sediment transport mechanisms and the correct prediction of the local scour magnitude is crucial for the structural design. In the current paper the complex physics of local scour under wave conditions are modeled. The numerical results are compared with experimental data, showing good agreement. The three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model REEF3D is used to calculate the detailed flow field and the resulting sediment transport pattern around the vertical pile. The location of the free surface is represented using the level set method, which calculates the complex motion of the free surface in a realistic manner. For the implementation of waves, the CFD code is used as a numerical wave tank. In order to provide an accurate prediction of propagating waves, the convection terms of the Navier-Stokes equations and the level set method are discretized with the 5th-order Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory scheme. The pressure is solved on a staggered grid, ensuring tight velocity-pressure coupling. The numerical model employs a Cartesian grid and complex geometries are treated with an immersed boundary method based on ghost cell extrapolation. Sediment transport is implemented through standard bed-load and suspended load formulas. The resulting sediment discharges and concentrations are evaluated with the Exner equation, giving the local erosion and deposition pattern for each time step. Spatially and temporally variable suspended sediment transport from upstream sources was investigated in the West River (unofficial name) at the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory (CBAWO) on Melville Island, Nunavut (74°55′ N, 109°35′ W), a river with nearly a decade of hydrological and sediment transport research in the Canadian Arctic and subject to recent permafrost disturbances, such as soil skin flows on slopes, massive ground ice melt in the channel, and substantial climate change. During the 2012 season, a survey was undertaken during the nival period to identify areas of the river where the flow was isolated from the channel bed by snow and where it progressively reached the bed. During the nival period, and throughout the rest of the season, suspended sediment transport data were collected from a primary outlet station and six upstream locations to identify the sources and sinks of sediment in the various reaches of the West River. An inferred sediment budget approach was used to identify the storage and release dynamics in each reach. Nival event-scale hysteresis and seasonal diurnal hysteresis patterns for 2012 were primarily anticlockwise, suggesting that sources of sediment were not readily available for transport during peak flows but became available as discharge waned. Analysis of diurnal hysteresis relationships for the years 2004–2012 (excluding 2011) signals a shift in daily sediment-discharge hysteresis from primarily clockwise to anticlockwise following an episode of permafrost disturbance and enhanced erosion in 2007. Consistent sediment storage in the upper catchment from this disturbance is interpreted to have contributed to the shift to anticlockwise daily hysteresis. Results provide insights into the fluvial and geomorphological response to changes in sediment availability in Arctic rivers and how these changes in turn affect sediment transport in these environments. • New empirical formulae for estimating erosion-deposition in Luoshan-Hankou reach. • A functional chart differentiating erosion-deposition types of Luoshan-Hankou reach. • Diversion-afflux states for maximum and equilibrium erosion-deposition in the reach. It is not yet fully understood how water-sediment diversion and afflux along a mainstream reach of a river affect erosion-deposition in downstream reaches. This study focuses on the Luoshan-Hankou mainstream reach of the middle Yangtze River, China. The Luoshan-Hankou reach is vitally important for flood control, being located downstream of three diversion mouths and an afflux outlet along the Jingjiang reach. We establish empirical formulae for sediment transport rates at boundary cross-sections, and hence estimate the amount and proportion of erosion-deposition and its relative increase (termed erosion-deposition promotion) in the Luoshan-Hankou reach. We then propose critical net water supplies from Dongting Lake to Luoshan-Hankou reach based on maxima and equilibria of erosion-deposition and its promotion. It is found that net water supply partly drives erosion-deposition in the Luoshan-Hankou reach where maximal proportions of deposition and deposition-promotion may be approximated by 0.01 c -37.67 and 0.01 c -37.67 + c -1, in which c is a dimensionless parameter representing the erosion-deposition condition in Luoshan-Hankou reach for no water-sediment exchange. At Zhicheng hydrological station, the critical ratio of net water supply to overall water discharge is 0.418 c -33.33-1, and critical net water supply ratios for equilibria of erosion-deposition and its promotion are −1 (or c -33.33-1) and 0 (or (0.06 + 3.257 c 54.61)-1-1). A chart based on net water supply and c is devised representing four types of erosion–deposition and its promotion for the Luoshan-Hankou reach. Historical data over the past 65 years demonstrate that erosion-deposition and its promotion in the reach are respectively governed by c and net water supply; there is a remarkable shift from alternate erosion-deposition to monotonic erosion whilst the erosion-deposition effect remains consistent. The foregoing are in agreement with observed data, and comparable with data for the Jingjiang reach (affected by the three water-sediment diversion mouths). Satisfactory flood-control conditions in the convergence zone between the Yangtze mainstream and Dongting Lake accompanied by increasing erosion in the Luoshan-Hankou reach are predicted for the future. Study of sediment sources and transport pathways in the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas is vital for understanding the interaction of fluvial, ocean, and sea-ice dynamics. In this study, 42 samples were analyzed for heavy minerals and 23 were analyzed for garnet geochemistry. These analyses suggest that the surface sediment is mainly sourced from the surrounding rivers. There are distinctive performances between the heavy minerals and garnet geochemistry of sediments in the Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. The content of hypersthene increased significantly on the outer shelf of the Chukchi Sea. The garnet was derived from volcanic rocks of the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic province and transported from the Gulf of Anadyr by the Pacific inflow. Coastal erosion materials dominated in the inner shelf of the Chukchi Sea. A significant amount of river input occurred in the western, middle, and eastern parts of the East Siberian Sea. The inputs from the Indigirka River and Kolyma River tend to be distributed eastward. The garnet geochemistry shows that there was a mixed sedimentary zone located south of Wrangel Island. The sediments in the outer shelf of the East Siberian Sea show a stable mixed sedimentary environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
