Storms and extremely energetic events may significantly impact the form and structure of beaches, and so cause erosive processes and coastal damages. Efficient management actions require an up-to-date and accurate knowledge of beach morphological changes, with the shoreline position being a good indicator of such changes. This work proposes the use of the open-source Shoreline Analysis and Extraction Tool (SAET) software for the definition of satellite-derived shorelines (SDSs) from L8 and Sentinel-2 imagery to reveal the shoreline position changes at the beaches of the Ebro Delta, NE Spain. Spatial-temporal models (STMs) of shoreline changes enable a characterisation of how the beaches responded to the storms of 2020. In conjunction with wave data, STMs enable an analysis of the erosive response to storm events, as well as a monitoring of subsequent beach recovery in the short and medium term (<1 year). Results show how Storm Gloria (January 2020, Hs max = 7.62 m) acted as a disruptive event and shifting point in the shoreline trend. As a response to that storm, major erosive processes occurred along the delta that caused an average shoreline retreat of 47 m. A progressive recovery during the spring and summer was mainly associated with periods of low wave energy. Nevertheless, by the end of the year a complete recovery had been achieved for about half of the coast, while the other half showed an average erosion of more than 10 m when compared to the pre-storm situation. Coastal zones are dynamic environments where sediment transport significantly influences erosion, deposition, and ecosystem stability. Accurate modelling of the complex interactions between hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and morphological changes in high-energy shoreface areas is crucial for sustainable coastal management. This study aims to assess sediment dynamics and understand the dominant physical drivers of sediment transport in the shoreface by coupling high-resolution numerical modelling with a shoreface sand tracer experiment. Results from the field experiment showed high diffusion and a net onshore and downdrift movement of the tracer in agreement with the observed hydrodynamic data. The numerical modelling strategy, validated with in situ hydrodynamic data and tracer results, demonstrated good performance and highlighted the dominant modes of shoreface sediment transport. While during low energetic wave conditions, the dominant transport mechanism involves the slow-rate bed load sediment movement toward the shore, under moderate energetic wave conditions, longshore wave-induced suspended transport becomes the prevailing mode of transport. Dune erosion during storm surges can lead to excessive damage to the dune system with devastating floods as a potential consequence. A risk assessment of areas protected by dunes can be facilitated by an understanding and description of the physical processes that take place. Field measurements, knowledge of underlying processes and numerical modelling have developed with time, which enabled a more comprehensive description and new predictive techniques. This review concerns dune erosion in the collision regime, and summarises relevant observations, describes underlying processes and explains existing models predicting dune erosion. Observations of dune erosion consist of field observations, laboratory experiments and manipulative field campaigns. The underlying physical processes that contribute to dune erosion are divided into processes that contribute to sediment transport due to hydrodynamic forcing, which occurs in the surf and swash zone, and sediment transport due to avalanching, which occurs in the swash zone, on the dune face and on the dune crest. The existing dune erosion models that are discussed here contain (empirical) equilibrium profile models and process-based models, which can both be a valuable tool for the risk assessment of storm surges. However, model uncertainties still remain, as specific processes are not yet fully understood and described. Examples are the influences of wave obliquity, sediment grain size, and vegetation on the dune face. By improving our knowledge through research and reducing these uncertainties, we can further improve our predictive models. Bedforms like ripples are widely distributed in the coastal zone. They influence the bed roughness thus the estimation of bed shear stress and associated sediment transport. An echo sounder was mounted on a bottom-supported tripod intended to measure the erosion and deposition of seabed in the subaqueous Yellow River Delta, China. However, variations in bed elevation are found to be not the net erosion or deposition at the observation site, but the migration of silt ripples which were generated by waves and pushed back and forth or flattened off by the tidal currents. Ripple heights were observed to be within 0.1–0.7 cm and were used for testing the model of Nielsen (1981). The model overestimated the height of silt ripples as it was developed for sands, but the deviation can be well addressed by incorporating a linear modification (R 2 = 0.79). Alternatively, a new model specifically for silt ripple height was regressed from the field data with R 2 up to 0.78. The existence of silt ripples increases the bed shear stress by 4 times due to the additional bed roughness. A "fluffy layer" overlies the consolidated seabed, therefore, net seabed erosion occurs after the "fluffy layer" is resuspended. A representative critical bed shear stress for net seabed erosion in the study area was found to be 0.8 Pa. The echo sounder can be an alternative tool for observing silt ripples in coastal regions like the Yellow River Delta where the water is too turbid for underwater videos. Decision-making in a coastal socio-ecological system involves managing a site-specific complexity arising not only from the interaction between hydrodynamic and morphological conditions, but also from the interactions between human structures and ecological systems, as well as the conflicting needs and interests of local actors. In addition, the projections of climate change impacts on coastal systems have a degree of uncertainty, which increases the general unpredictability of coastal dynamic behaviour, and adds a layer of complexity to the decision-making process. Scientific knowledge can help reduce some of the inherent uncertainties, and is essential when it comes to making sound decisions on the choice of appropriate coastal defence measures (CDMs) that are adapted to specific coastal environments and improve the resilience of coastal communities. This paper is based on a meta-analysis of 355 CDMs case studies drawn from 301 publications. From these published case studies, the objectives were to analyze the geographical and physical contexts in which CDMs monitoring was carried out and, based on the findings, to recommend areas of improvement necessary to help make sound decisions in any type of coastal environment. The meta-analysis showed that study sites are not evenly distributed around the world. Most originate from Europe (n = 106), the USA (n = 151) and Australia (n = 30), while few studies have been carried out in Africa and Asia where dense population resides in high-risk zones. Also noticeable is the absence of sites in high latitude climates where ice plays a major role in the erosion process. Five basic variables (coastal type, sediment type, wave characteristics, tidal range, and currents or sediment transport characteristics) are used in publications to characterize study sites according to their physical components. However, only 13 of the 355 sites included a complete characterization using the 5 variables, of which coastal and sediment types are the most frequently identified (77.2% and 72.7% respectively). In general, CDMs are studied in the context of unconsolidated low shore (59.4%) and in sandy environments (74.6%). Information on tidal range, wave climate, and currents, or sediment transport characteristics, is much scarcer. Since 1990, 3 of the 10 CDMs identified in the studies have received more attention than the others; these are beach nourishments, seawalls and breakwaters, with respective cumulative study sites of 164, 67 and 50. The geomorphological effects of CDMs are the most studied (55.1%), followed by ecological (31.2%), hydrodynamic (9.1%), and social (4.6%). Overall, this meta-analysis helped identify knowledge gaps regarding geographical and physical contexts in which CDMs monitoring was held. It also gave an indication of the kind of improvement necessary for global-scale adaptation planning, and for a better decision-making process to reduce coastal risks in the most vulnerable coastal communities. Finally, the analysis shows that 4.4% of the studies on defence measures include monitoring of their effects on the coastal zone. A conceptual scheme is proposed for the evaluation of adaptation solutions based on the global monitoring of coastal zones to measure coastal change trajectories in the context of climate change. Coastal dunes provide many ecosystem services including protection of infrastructure from wave overtopping and habitat for native species. Foredunes grow at different rates and assume different forms (i.e., short and wide to tall and narrow) depending on a range of factors including pre-existing beach and dune morphology, wind, wave, and water levels, sediment grain size, and vegetation characteristics, yet the relative importance of these factors on foredune growth is understudied. Here, we quantify foredune evolution (2016–2019) and explore the relative influence of a suite of metocean, sedimentary, and ecological factors for dune growth on three barrier islands in the U.S. North Carolina Outer Banks (Cape Lookout National Seashore). We incorporate observed and hindcast wind, wave, and water level data into the process-based, coupled beach-dune evolution model, Windsurf, to explore the relative contribution of factors likely to influence foredune growth at the annual timescale (2016–2017). Our cross-shore topographic profile observations show varied interannual foredune change rates and characteristics, including horizontal retreat and progradation at the dune toe and vertical erosion and accretion at the dune crest. Model results indicate that, of the factors explored, pre-existing morphology had the greatest influence on the type of foredune growth that occurred (i.e., incipient dune development, widening of the dune, and/or vertical accretion), which dramatically altered the final shape of the dune. Variations in wind and wave climates were associated with the relative contribution of marine- and aeolian-driven bed elevation changes and were particularly influential during storms. In addition, increases in the minimum elevation of vegetation on the dune profile (analogous to the cross-shore distance between the shoreline and established vegetation line, i.e., the vegetation limit, as coined by Duran and Moore, 2013) increased dune crest height and dune volume. Moreover, variations in the minimum vegetation elevation resulted in a larger range of dune crest elevations and dune volumes than differences in the median sand grain size. Large-scale coastal erosion in the Mekong Delta has been dramatically increasing in severity in recent decades. There are several effective hard engineering solutions that have been implemented in this delta to efficiently prevent coastal erosion and stimulate sedimentation while supporting the local ecosystem conservation. These measures include Pile-Rock Breakwaters (PRBW), Hollow Triangle Breakwaters (HTB) and Semicircular Breakwaters (SBW). However, research on the sediment transport, morphological changes and toe erosion for these offshore breakwaters is very limited and is currently in the initial stages of understanding the specific conditions of sediment characteristics and foundations. The objective of this study was to reproduce the morphological changes and toe erosion of three breakwaters due to wave-structure interactions. This was investigated using 2D physical models with 3000 irregular waves during 8 experimental hours (equal to 15,000*T p). To extract the bed morphological changes and toe erosion both specialized laser measurements (SW50M laser ruler) and analysis of high-speed video recording by images digitalization were applied. The experimental results show that the shape and structural design of offshore breakwaters can have a significant influence on the bed morphology on both the seaside and the leeside. We found that generally the toe of the construction on the seaside was eroded due to the occurrence of reflected waves, and that the flow is narrowed while passing through the construction, increasing the flow velocity and causing toe erosion. Additionally, the accretion of sediment at the leeside of the breakwaters was found to be mainly driven by the transport of sediment through the construction. Comparing the breakwater designs the experimental results showed that the HTB has the maximum accretion rate behind the structure, as well as the fastest accretion rate behind the breakwater. The SBW has high wave energy dissipation efficiency, although the toe erosion rate is faster than the other classes of breakwaters. The PRBW shows the fastest toe erosion rate in front of the structure and causes accretion at the leeside of the construction but at a lower rate than the HTB. The findings from this study will help practical designers to reinforce the foot of construction during real breakwater designing and inform stability calculations. Shorelines bordering ebb deltas are often subject to deformation by the approach and attachment of ebb-tidal shoals. Although this is a common behaviour, little attention has been paid to the link between shoal migration and the multi-annual development of the adjacent beach-dune system. This study aims to understand beach-dune systems' behaviour during the approach phase of an ebb-tidal shoal attachment event. Topographic and bathymetric data of the barrier island of Texel (NL) was used to calculate shoreline position, beach and dune volume, dunefoot position, and shoal displacement rates. Two classical beach-dune interaction models were used to understand the observed behaviour: the surfzone-beach-dune model and the sediment budget model. The analysis revealed how a larger bank on the land-facing side of the ebb delta split into two smaller shoals with different morphological behaviours. One of the shoals (S1) moved consistently landwards, recently attaching the shore, whereas the second shoal (S2) is still evolving and presents a milder landward movement than S1. In parallel to the landward movement of S1, the adjacent coastline was subject to erosion, partially counterbalanced by nourishments. However, despite the erosion, dunes are growing in volume, suggesting a net positive transfer of sand from the beach to the dunes. In the surfzone-beach-dune model, regular nourishments positively affect beach state by maintaining sufficient beach size for aeolian sediment transport and reducing shoreline erosion. In the budget model, dune volume growth may occur despite a slightly negative beach budget. Framing Texel in the budget model implies that the beach budget before the start of the approach phase is crucial in defining the behaviour of the dune system during this phase. If the shoal approach significantly reduces the beach budget, the system may cross the budget threshold that dune building is possible. Thus, the dune system may evolve to an erosional state, including dune ridge dissection and blowout development. Hence, nourishments have been essential in keeping the current morphological state during the attachment of the shoal, as they restrict the system from crossing the negative morphological threshold. Thus, without the nourishments, beach erosion driven by the shoal might have led to morphological changes in the dune system that could lead to years of a weakened level of protection until foredune recovery after attachment. • Shoal-induced changes in beach budget influence dune development. • Dune morphology may change depending on the beach state prior to attachment. • Nourishments can retain beach budget at a sufficient level to maintain dune morphology. A coastal inflection of ∼45 km in the extreme south of Brazil demonstrates differences in coastline behavior with areas of deposition towards north and areas of severe erosion towards south, threatening coastal occupation. These areas are believed to be controlled by the sand wave behavior of the coastline with adjacent erosion and progradation areas that have relevant alongshore sediment transport imposed by S quadrant waves. In this study, we quantified the rates of change of coastline and described the erosion and deposition controls behind it, using ultra-high-resolution orbital images and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) orthomosaics obtained between 2005 and 2020 for three urbanized beach sectors within the area, i.e., the São Simão, Mostardense, and Lighthouse Beaches. The rates of change of coastline were calculated using the change polygon method. The results indicated total recession values > 40 m at the Mostardense and Lighthouse beaches corresponding to a rate of ∼3 m/y. Such values characterized the coastal erosive hotspots that have not been previously identified in the area. Future coastlines were projected from the estimated annual variation rates. Buildings previously destroyed or threatened by marine/wind processes were also mapped. Erosion rates along Alaska's Beaufort Sea coast, among the highest in the world, are negatively impacting communities, industrial and military infrastructure, and wildlife habitat. Decreasing maximal winter ice extent and increasing summer open water duration and extent in the Beaufort Sea may be making the coast more vulnerable to destructive storm waves than during recent, colder, icier decades. Previous studies of Beaufort Sea coastal change have been limited to subaerial analyses of the shoreline. Here we describe nearshore seafloor change by comparing post-World War II (WWII) (1945-53) bathymetry data to recently acquired (1985–2018) bathymetry data and relate the observed seafloor change to adjacent shoreline change near Utqiagvik, within Stefansson Sound, and immediately west of Barter Island and Kaktovik. Within the Utqiagvik region, seabed erosion was generally highest (>1.0 m of loss) offshore of Point Barrow and along the eastern end of the Tapkaluk Islands, while there were lesser amounts of deposition (<0.5 m of gain) within the protected waters of Elson Lagoon. Sedimentation was generally highest offshore of Point Barrow, in a region of converging currents, and on the landward side of the barrier islands and spits fronting Elson Lagoon, which is likely related to a regional trend of westerly sediment transport and landward migration of the barrier islands. Within Stefansson Sound, perhaps the most notable changes from post-WWII bathymetry data compared to recent data are a switch from mixed, low erosion and deposition in 1997 to low deposition (<0.5 m) in 2018 east of the Boulder Patch, a switch from low erosion in 1997 to neutral depth change in 2018 in the channel between the north and south Boulder Patch areas, and higher deposition from 1997 to 2018 landward of the rapidly retreating barrier islands along the Sound's northern border. At Barter Island, high erosion near north-facing shorelines and high deposition near west-facing shorelines generally matched shoreline changes. One of our goals is to identify possible processes responsible for the depth changes we quantified. Using simple metrics that relate sediment characteristics with modeled waves and non-wave induced currents, we show that sediment resuspension and transport by both wave and non-wave driven currents likely contribute to the overall patterns of change within the ∼13 m isobath along the open coast, and that the influence of wave action affecting sediment transport is expanding seaward. • Patterns of decadal-scale changes in shoreline positions and bathymetry indicate possible linkages within the nearshore. • Depth changes are additionally driven by sediment resuspension and transport by both wave and non-wave driven currents. • Wave action affecting sediment transport expanded seaward and deepened by as much as 15 cm/yr between 1979 and 2019. Coastal zones are vulnerable to both erosion and flood risk, which can be assessed using coupled hydro-morphodynamic models. However, the use of such models as decision support tools suffers from a high degree of uncertainty, due to both incomplete knowledge and natural variability in the system. In this work, we show for the first time how the multilevel Monte Carlo method (MLMC) can be applied in hydro-morphodynamic coastal ocean modelling, here using the popular model XBeach, to quantify uncertainty by computing statistics of key output variables given uncertain input parameters. MLMC accelerates the Monte Carlo approach through the use of a hierarchy of models with different levels of resolution. Several theoretical and real-world coastal zone case studies are considered here, for which output variables that are key to the assessment of flood and erosion risk, such as wave run-up height and total eroded volume, are estimated. We show that MLMC can significantly reduce computational cost, resulting in speed up factors of 40 or greater compared to a standard Monte Carlo approach, whilst keeping the same level of accuracy. Furthermore, a sophisticated ensemble generating technique is used to estimate the cumulative distribution of output variables from the MLMC output. This allows for the probability of a variable exceeding a certain value to be estimated, such as the probability of a wave run-up height exceeding the height of a seawall. Two barrier systems in southeastern Tasmania afford the opportunity to contrast Holocene barrier evolution and explore large-scale coastal morphodynamics under consistent regional-scale boundary conditions on an embayed wave-dominated coastline. New Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages for the previously undated seaward ridges of Seven Mile Beach constrain the deposition of the foredune ridges over the past ~1000 years indicating continued shoreline progradation at ~0.4 m/yr. A further 13 OSL ages collected from the foredune ridges of Nine Mile Beach barrier detail the evolution of this barrier system and indicate progradation commenced approximately ~8500 years ago. Following this, a steady rate of shoreline advance at 0.14 m/yr was evident to near present-day with one phase of rapid accretion ~5000 years ago. This occurred as the barrier system extended eastward to span the full embayment width which resulted in the redirection of the estuarine channel and the subsequent erosion of previously deposited ridges due to channel migration likely over several thousand years. The eroded sediment may have contributed to ongoing positive sand budget in the embayment and continued shoreline progradation. Barrier 'recycling' was also suggested as a potential driver of progradation at Seven Mile Beach based on the truncated margin of the landward ridges. However, at both sites, the dynamics of possible sediment exchange between the back-barrier and open shoreline requires further detailed modelling. The relatively small river systems in this region supply minimal sand to the coast at these sites, however, there is some minor alongshore sediment supply along the western margin of these deep embayment's. In light of this, these two barrier systems demonstrate the importance of internal morphodynamic thresholds and cross-shore sediment exchange from the shoreface as key drivers of barrier evolution and large-scale coastal change in embayed coastal settings. • Holocene barrier deposition in Tasmania was driven by onshore sediment transport. • Shoreline advance at Nine Mile Beach averaged 0.14 m/yr from 8500 years to present. • Erosion of inner margin of the barrier may have augmented sediment budget. • Large-scale coastal behaviour is explained by internal morphodynamic thresholds. Abstract: Humans are increasingly altering the Earth''s surface, and affecting processes that shape and reshape landscapes. In many cases, humans are reacting to landscape-change processes that represent natural hazards. Thus, the landscape is reacting to humans who are reacting to the landscape. When the timescales for landscape change are comparable to those of human dynamics, human and ‘natural’ components of developed environments are dynamically coupled—necessitating coupling models of human and physical/biological processes to study either environmental change or human responses. Here we focus on a case study coupling models of coastal economics and physical coastline change. In this modeling, coastline change results from patterns of wave-driven sediment transport and sea-level rise, and shoreline stabilization decisions are based on the benefits of wide beaches (capitalized into property values) balanced against the costs of stabilization. This interdisciplinary modeling highlights points that may apply to other coupled human/natural systems. First, climate change, by accelerating the rates of landscape change, tends to strengthen the coupling with human dynamics. In our case study, both increasing sea-level-rise rates and changing storm patterns tend to increase shoreline change rates, which can induce more vigorous shoreline stabilization efforts. However, property values can fall dramatically as erosion rates and stabilization costs rise, which can also lead to the abandonment of expensive stabilization methods as shoreline change rates increase. Second, socio-economic change can also strengthen the human/landscape coupling. Changing costs of shoreline stabilization can alter stabilization decisions, which in turn alters patterns of coastline change. The coupled modeling illuminates the long-range effects of localized shoreline stabilization efforts; communities arrayed along a coastline are unwittingly affecting each other''s erosion rates, and therefore each other''s economies. Our coupled modeling experiments show that spatial distributions of property values and erosion rates can jointly affect economic outcomes, resource allocation between communities, and patterns of shoreline change. Abstract: Coastal dunes can act as a method of soft coastal protection against inundation and direct impact of waves during storms if they are substantially large enough in volume to withstand erosion without breaching. However, the time evolution of sand dunes under direct wave impact is not well understood and many available models require site specific calibration and have had limited verification at field scales. Here we test three models of varying complexity in their ability to predict both dry beach erosion volumes and dune to a retreat for an East Coast Low storm event that occurred on the Gold Coast, Australia. The process-based model, XBeach, which models the entire profile was able to reproduce both dune toe retreat and dry beach volume, however, was sensitive to calibration parameters. The two parametric models that only modeled erosion above the initial dune toe position were capable of accurately predicting dune toe retreat, however, under-estimated dry beach erosion volumes. With no calibration, the parametric model proposed by Palmsten and Holman (2012) produced the smallest errors of dune toe retreat with mean error in final dune position of 6.6m, or 18% of the total measured dune retreat. With minimal calibration estimated absolute error in average dune toe retreat was less than 13% of observed retreat for all three models. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Geological effects of the 2010 Chilean tsunami were quantified at five near-field sites along a 200km segment of coast located between the two zones of predominant fault slip. Field measurements, including topography, flow depths, flow directions, scour depths, and deposit thicknesses, provide insights into the processes and morphological changes associated with tsunami inundation and return flow. The superposition of downed trees recorded multiple strong onshore and alongshore flows that arrived at different times and from different directions. The most likely explanation for the diverse directions and timing of coastal inundation combines (1) variable fault rupture and asymmetrical slip displacement of the seafloor away from the epicenter with (2) resonant amplification of coastal edge waves. Other possible contributing factors include local interaction of incoming flow and return flow and delayed wave reflection by the southern coast of Peru. Coastal embayments amplified the maximum inundation distances at two sites (2.4 and 2.6km, respectively). Tsunami vertical erosion included scour and planation of the land surface, inundation scour around the bases of trees, and channel incision from return flow. Sheets and wedges of sand and gravel were deposited at all of the sites. Locally derived boulders up to 1m in diameter were transported as much as 400m inland and deposited as fields of dispersed clasts. The presence of lobate bedforms at one site indicates that at least some of the late-stage sediment transport was as bed load and not as suspended load. Most of the tsunami deposits were less than 25cm thick. Exceptions were thick deposits near open-ocean river mouths where sediment supply was abundant. Human alterations of the land surface at most of the sites provided opportunities to examine some tsunami effects that otherwise would not have been possible, including flow histories, boulder dispersion, and vegetation controls on deposit thickness. Abstract: The coastline of Kannyakumari (8°4′N 77°33′E to 8°13′N 77°14′E), along the Arabian Sea is located near the southern tip of the Indian peninsula. This coast experiences heavy erosion particularly during the seasonal monsoons. This in turn results in considerable damage to properties, economic loss and leads to a number of socio economic problems. Protection measures in the form of groins have been implemented at selected locations along the coast. Prediction of shoreline oscillation due to the presence of such structures is extremely important prior to their construction. Although several formulae are available in the literature for the prediction of long shore sediment transport, studies regarding their application and validation with field problems along this coast are scanty. In the present work, seasonal measurements of shoreline oscillation adjacent to the shore connected structures were carried out during the year 2007 for which satellite data have also been adopted. These measurements are adopted to validate a finite difference based numerical model based on the formulation of for the prediction of shoreline evolution in the presence of shore connected structures. The offshore wave climate for the year 2007 is simulated from National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) wind data using Wave Analysis Model (WAM) model, whereas, the near shore wave climate was derived by adopting MIKE21 Parabolic Mild Slope (PMS) module The alongshore sediment transport is calculated using the approach of . Abstract: Occupation of the coast has significantly increased in recent decades, mostly due to a greater demand for recreation and tourism. Today, erosion threatens many human-made structures and activities, requiring an integrated approach for the understanding of coastal dynamics and identification of alternatives to associated problems. This study investigates a 64km-long coastal physiographic unit in the northern microtidal littoral of Tuscany (Italy). Vertical aerial photographs and direct field surveys were used to retrieve changes in shoreline position over 1938–1997 and 1997–2005 time intervals. Significant beach accretion was observed during the first period updrift of Carrara (84m) and Viareggio (280m) harbours and at Marina di Pietrasanta (100m), whereas severe erosion occurred downcoast of Carrara harbour (−130m, at Marina dei Ronchi) and on the northern side of Arno river mouth (−400m). Similar trends were observed between 1997 and 2005; beach slope between the 1997 shoreline position and the closure depth correlated well with the distribution of erosion/accretion patterns from the 1938–1997 period (slopes were lower in eroded areas than at sites under accretion). Longshore distribution of erosion/accretion patterns was controlled by coastal compartmentalisation. Three of the main littoral cells were mostly formed by natural limits (i.e., Punta Bianca promontory, Marina di Pietrasanta, the Arno river mouth and the port of Livorno). Several sub-cells were created within these cells due to the introduction of human-made structures (such as Carrara and Viareggio harbours), which formed artificial fixed limits that allowed the transport of sediments (exclusively fines) in one direction only. Results will help improve the understanding of coastal processes and manage littoral sediment transport in a sustainable manner. This will reduce the need for structural interventions, such as breakwaters and groynes, which in the past decades prevented coastal retreat at local scale but shifted erosion downdrift, leading to degradation of the investigated area and requiring continuous maintenance. Abstract: The disruption of sediment supply from river to coast by dam development has been a topic of global concern. In Japan, among the top 30 dams in terms of height, 14 dams were constructed prior to 1970 and another 6 dams before 1980. However, the coastline erosion did not surface up as a grievous problem until the 1980s. According to the River Bureau of Japan, the overall erosion rate along the coastline of Japan was 0.72×106m2/yr prior to 1980, but sharply increased to 1.6×106m2/yr since 1980. Therefore, there was a time lag between the disruption of sediment supply by dam and beach erosion. Abstract: We examined seasonal variations in offshore and longshore sediment transport along the Shimizu coast, Suruga Bay, Central Japan, facing the Pacific Ocean, and considered the relationship between these variations and coastal erosion, based on coastal topographic data and detailed bathymetric data acquired by narrow multi-beam echo soundings in 2004–2007 and analyses of material collected in 2004–2005, combined with wave data in the nearshore zone. Sediment transport in the study area is divided into two seasonal modes. In winter–spring, a period dominated by the winter monsoon, littoral drift is recognized but offshore-directed sediment transport is minimal. Sediment is deposited around coastal structures during this period; consequently, tombolos are formed from gravelly deposits and offshore banks which represent the bulges of the seafloor (in water depths of 3–7m) are formed seaward of the structures due to the deposition of sandy sediment. In summer–autumn, when typhoons commonly strike the coast, we observe pronounced longshore and offshore sediment transport. Consequently, the deposits that form tombolos and offshore banks are intensely eroded. The bulk of the eroded sediments are transported into the submarine canyons in the case that a canyon is located close to the coastline and the shelf is narrow. As a result of this transport, sand ridges and depressions are formed from sandy and gravelly deposits, respectively. The amount of erosion (−34,000m3) from the seafloor where most of the active transport occurred in the study area during summer–autumn approximately corresponds to the amount of nourishment (35,000m3) recorded throughout the entire study area, corresponding to about 50% of the amount of the sediment carried by longshore transport (70,000m3/year). Long-period deep-water waves and high incident waves generated by typhoons during summer–autumn are essential in transporting sediment from the coast to offshore areas; the winter monsoon makes only a minor contribution in this regard. The amount of sediment outflow generated by high-energy waves appears to increase with the accumulation of sediment around offshore breakwaters built in regions with a narrow shelf. Research on offshore-directed sediment transport, as in this study, is important for managing and preserving the nearshore environment (e.g., to examine the budget between supply and outflow), as deposits that flow out into the deep ocean never return to the beach. Abstract: This study presents the results of a long-term monitoring program of bed level changes measured during 8 yr at an intertidal mudflat in a microtidal, temperate coastal lagoon. Additionally, bed level measurements obtained at a 10-min temporal resolution at the same tidal flat and at the bed of a nearby tidal channel are presented. Short-term changes in bed level are one or two orders of magnitude larger than the annual net-deposition rate, which shows that the environment is highly dynamic with respect to erosion, transport and deposition of fine-grained sediment. Some seasonality in the bed level changes was observed and there is a tendency for mudflat deposition in spring, summer and early autumn and erosion during the rest of the year, but interannual variations are large and different parts of the mudflat show different seasonal signals. A close coupling between sub- and intertidal deposition and erosion was observed. The time-series showed that some of the material eroded from the mudflat was not exported to the open sea, but instead temporarily deposited in a nearby shallow tidal channel and later returned to the mudflat during calmer weather conditions. These findings support previously published hypothesis and results of modelling studies. Based on the observed abundance of fine-grained sediment at the study sites and the high accretion rates generally found on fine-grained tidal flats in the Danish Wadden Sea area, it is argued that these fine-grained tidal flats are not seriously threatened by the expected sea level rise in the 21st century. Abstract: A morphodynamic model previously developed to predict the evolution of sedimentary coasts is extended to compare the effects of abrasion and thermal-abrasion processes on Arctic coasts. It is concluded that under the same storm impact, an unfrozen abrasion cliff loses almost the same sediment volume and retreats at almost the same rate as a thermal-abrasion cliff of corresponding effective height. Thermal impact itself presumably does not contribute to the volume of sediment losses significantly and only prepares the frozen material to be removed by waves and currents. Whatever the potential of thermal-abrasion determined by thermal effects, the volume of lost material would be limited mostly by the potential transport capacity of storm wave activity, as in the case of a pure abrasion. The long-term losses of sediments for both types of coast can be determined using an empirical relationship incorporating the effective height of the cliff, hce, taking into account the subsidence of soil after thawing of ice. The proposed model is employed to predict the evolution of thermal-abrasion and accretionary coasts in the central and eastern Russian Arctic where the sea-ice conditions at present are more severe. The recession of the thermal abrasion cliffs is expected to accelerate by 1.4 to 1.5 times in the second half of the 21st century. Morphodynamic modeling is employed in the present work to predict the long-term evolution (over the next 100 years) of typical sedimentary coasts in the western Russian Arctic. The studied objects are the coasts of Varandey (the Barents Sea), Baydaratskaya Bay and Harasavey (the Kara Sea). The model developed takes into account both the short-term processes (storm events) and long-term factors (for example, changes in sea level, inter-annual variations in gross sediment flux, lack or excess of sediment supply). Predicted and observed morphological changes in coastal profiles are shown to agree well for time scales ranging from weeks to decades. It is revealed that under given environmental conditions, the morphological evolution is strongly influenced by storm surges and associated wind-driven circulation. The water level gradient created by a surge generates a seaward flow at the bed. This outflow is shown to be an important destructive mechanism contributing to the erosion and recession of Arctic coasts. The rate of change is found to depend on both the exposure of the coast (relative to the direction of dominant winds) and its height above the sea. The open coast of Varandey is expected to retreat as much as 300–500 m over 100 years, while recession of the less exposed coasts of Baydaratskaya Bay would not exceed about 100 m/century. If long-term sediment losses are insignificant, the rate of erosion decays with time and the morphodynamic system may tend toward equilibrium. It is concluded that the expected relative sea-level rise (up to 1 m over the nearest 100 years) is non-crucial to the future coastal evolution if an erosion activity is already high enough.
