Objectives: To review the current literature on educational interventions used in peritoneal dialysis (PD). Educational interventions have become increasingly relevant because they play a key role in helping individuals to actively participate in their therapy and to manage their chronic condition. The paper will focus on two areas: (a) educational interventions for individuals living with PD and (b) educational interventions for PD nurses. Design: A narrative review of primary research. Data sources: Electronic searches of the MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC and Cochrane Library (2006–2013) databases were undertaken using terms such as peritoneal dialysis, insertive training, curriculum, nursing education, train the trainer, coach the coach, tutor the tutor, and patient education were used. All studies were reviewed by two researchers. Review methods: Titles and abstracts of 555 studies were screened and read. Full text articles retrieved were further screened against the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Relevant data on the educational interventions for people receiving PD and nurse training programs were extracted and synthesized narratively. Results: Eighteen articles met the inclusion criteria. Most of them focused on educational intervention programs for people undergoing PD. Findings on the link between the PD trainer’s background and peritonitis rates among individuals undergoing PD are inconsistent. PD learners should be taught self-management skills as well as technical skills. They might also benefit from receiving decision-making aids. Older people, people with co-morbidities and people with low educational status need more time to acquire self-care skills and are more likely to develop peritonitis. Home visits have the potential to improve learning outcomes. Re-training needs should be assessed and fulfilled as appropriate. Case and disease management programs have been shown to have positive outcomes for individuals receiving PD. Conclusions: Educational interventions for PD remain an under-researched area, despite the potential they have to make this type of therapy more successful. Further research on education and training for people receiving PD and for PD nurses is needed. In the meantime, educational interventions used for other chronic conditions could provide guidance. Aims: To provide the best available evidence to determine the impact of nurse practitioner services on cost, quality of care, satisfaction and waiting times in the emergency department for adult patients. Background: The delivery of quality care in the emergency department is emerging as one of the most important service indicators in health delivery. Increasing service pressures in the emergency department have resulted in the adoption of service innovation models: the most common and rapidly expanding of these is emergency nurse practitioner services. The rapid uptake of emergency nurse practitioner service in Australia has outpaced the capacity to evaluate this service model in terms of outcomes related to safety and quality of patient care. Previous research is now outdated and not commensurate with the changing domain of delivering emergency care with nurse practitioner services. Data sources: A comprehensive search of four electronic databases from 2006 to 2013 was conducted to identify research evaluating nurse practitioner service impact in the emergency department. English language articles were sought using MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase and Cochrane and included two previous systematic reviews completed five and seven years ago. Review methods: A three step approach was used. Following a comprehensive search, two reviewers assessed all identified studies against the inclusion criteria. From the original 1013 studies, 14 papers were retained for critical appraisal on methodological quality by two independent reviewers and data were extracted using standardised tools. Results: Narrative synthesis was conducted to summarise and report the findings as insufficient data was available for meta-analysis of results. This systematic review has shown that emergency nurse practitioner service has a positive impact on quality of care, patient satisfaction and waiting times. There was insufficient evidence to draw conclusions regarding outcomes of a cost benefit analysis. Conclusion: Synthesis of the available research attempts to provide an evidence base for emergency nurse practitioner service to guide healthcare leaders, policy makers and clinicians in reform of emergency service provision. Background: Since the early 1990s a shift has occurred in the understanding of what constitutes quality healthcare. This is evidenced by the emergence of new concepts in the nursing literature, including best practice. Although authors have analyzed the concept of best practice in the healthcare sector, further analysis is required to distinguish the concept's unique meanings, and significance for the nursing discipline. Objectives: This paper seeks to clarify use of the concept of best practice in the nursing literature over the last two decades, and contributes to explaining its defining characteristics, applicability, and significance. It also distinguishes the concept's unique meanings and usefulness in comparison to other related terms. Methods: An evolutionary concept analysis method was selected for this analysis. First, a representative sample of nursing sources was obtained utilizing the CINAHL database. This database was searched for sources in English, during the years 1993-2013, with both best practice and nursing in the title. Data was then collected from the sample of retrieved literature on attributes of best practice, antecedent and consequential occurrences, variations, and empirical references. The following related concepts were also explored for purposes of comparison and to situate the understanding of best practice in-context: practice development, evidence-based practice, and standard of care. Findings: Use of the concept of best practice in the nursing literature may be categorized into four distinct domains: educational, administrative, clinical and theoretical/ conceptual. Exploration of defining attributes revealed that best practice may be characterized as: directive, evidence-based, and quality-focused. Antecedent occurrences in the sample sources were most commonly related to identification of a specified need or problem, somewhat defined by the domain. The implied consequential occurrences were ultimately better outcomes. Conclusion: Best practice is more than practice based on evidence. It represents quality care which is deemed optimal based on a prevailing standard or point of view. Specific best practices in nursing are significant because they serve to direct nurses regarding solutions to identified problems/needs. Continued analysis of the concept of best practice is required to further distinguish it from related concepts, and to expand our understanding of the relative meaning of best from multiple perspectives. Objectives: There has been extensive investment in programmes to reduce injuries among health care staff caused by moving and handling patients or residents. Given conflicting evidence regarding the effectiveness of such programmes, the present paper conducted a critical appraisal of systematic reviews assessing the effectiveness of interventions in reducing back pain and injuries among healthcare staff. A realist synthesis was conducted on a second set of reports to identify best practices for moving and handling programmes. Design: A critical appraisal of systematic reviews and a realist synthesis to identify best practices for moving and handling programmes. Data sources: A literature search of five databases (Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and ScienceDirect) located 150 reports assessing programme outcomes published in refereed journals between 2000 and 2013. Review methods: The critical appraisal included six systematic reviews. The realist synthesis included 47 studies that provided descriptive information about programme mechanisms. Results: Five of the six systematic reviews covered interventions involving either staff training or training and equipment supply. One review covered multi-component interventions. All concluded that training staff by itself was ineffective. There were differing conclusions regarding the effectiveness of training and equipment interventions and multi-component programmes. The reviews provided little information about the content of programme components. The realist synthesis noted the need for management commitment and support, and six core programme components; a policy requiring safe transfer practices, ergonomic assessment of spaces where people are transferred, transfer equipment including lifts, specific risk assessment protocols, adequate training of all care staff, and coordinators coaches or resource staff. These programme components are likely to be synergistic; omitting one component weakens the impact of the other components. Conclusions: Five systematic reviews provided little information regarding the core components of effective programmes. Given the absence of experimental trials for multi- component programmes, the best available evidence for the effectiveness of multi- component programmes is from pre-post studies and large-scale surveys. The realist synthesis provided detailed information about the core components for effective programmes. Further studies, which include qualitative data, are needed to provide evidence about the specific mechanisms through which components contribute to effective patient handling programmes. For many years there has been concern that new graduate nurses may not have been adequately prepared for the workplace, often framed in terms of whether they are work ready or practice ready and able to deal with the 'reality shock' of transitioning from student to clinician. This has prompted significant research to investigate the practice readiness of new graduate nurses. Identify what is known about the practice readiness of new graduate nurses upon commencement of employment, how practice readiness changes over their first year of employment and explore the factors which influence practice readiness. Scoping review of existing reviews guided by the framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley, with search results based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science were searched to identify literature reviews synthesising evidence about new graduate nurses, work readiness, practice readiness, competency and transition to practice. New graduate nurses were defined as nurses who were working in any clinical setting as a nurse within their first year of employment after graduation. Database searching was supplemented with snowball searching and limited to English language papers published between 2011 and 2020. Full-text copies of included reviews were imported into an NVivo (Version 12) database to facilitate analysis and synthesis of findings. Forty-five reviews were included. The findings indicate that transition is influenced by a wide range of intrapersonal, interpersonal and organisational factors, many of which are beyond the control of new graduate nurses. The findings also suggest that, overall, there are no major concerns about the practice readiness of new graduate nurses consistently supported by strong evidence. However, there is evidence to suggest that they 'lack confidence' during the first few months of employment. The 'receptivity' of the clinical environment to new graduate nurses appears to be a critical influence on their experience of transitioning from student to clinician and can also influence their readiness for the role of a registered nurse. Rather than focusing on the question of whether new graduate nurses are adequately prepared for the workplace, it may be time to shift the question to whether the workplace is ready to support new graduate nurses. To describe and examine the theories, components, and effectiveness of self-management support interventions for individuals experiencing cancer-related fatigue. A systematic review was reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 Statement. CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, and EMBASE were searched (from inception to June 2021) for randomised controlled trials examining self-management support interventions for managing cancer-related fatigue. Data were screened, extracted, and appraised by two authors. Data extraction was guided by the Self-management Support Taxonomy (i.e., a modified version of the Practical Reviews in Self-Management Support Taxonomy tailored to cancer). The Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used for study appraisal. A critical narrative synthesis was conducted. Fifty-one papers representing 50 different studies (n = 7383) were identified. Most interventions were delivered post-treatment (40%) using in-person (i.e., 'face-to-face') encounters (40%), and were facilitated by health professionals (62%). A range of intervention approaches and self-management support strategies were used across studies. The average number of Self-management Support Taxonomy components used across studies was 6.1 (of 14). Thirty-one studies (62%) described a specific behavior change theory to guide their self-management support intervention development. Twenty-nine studies (n = 29/50; 58%) reported a positive intervention effect for fatigue immediately post-intervention. Of these 29 studies, 10 (34%) reported at least one sustained positive effect on fatigue over follow-up periods between two and 12 months. Self-management support that is delivered after cancer treatment, facilitated by health professionals, and incorporating at least one in-person contact appears to produce the most favourable fatigue and behavioral outcomes. However, further work is needed to better understand how individual self-management support strategies and the application of a behavioral theory influence behavior change. Program developers should guide self-management support with a behavioral theory, and describe their theory application in intervention development, implementation, and evaluation; ensure facilitators receive adequate support training; and seek the delivery preferences of cancer survivors. Future research should incorporate adequate follow-up to sufficiently evaluate the impact of programs on cancer-related fatigue and associated self-management behaviors. Findings from this review are relevant to all healthcare professionals, but are of most relevance to nurses as the largest cancer care workforce with a key role in delivering self-management support. Exposure to stressors can evoke psychological, physiological, and behavioral stress responses, which may lead to the adoption of health-damaging behaviors that dysregulate multiple biological systems contributing to a high allostatic load. This review explored the role of combined modifiable lifestyle behaviors in the relationship between stressors and allostatic load among healthy adults. A systematic search was conducted in Medline Complete, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Embase databases up to September 2021. The PRISMA guidelines guided reporting and study quality was assessed using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Checklist. Database searches identified 319 papers. Eight cross-sectional and two longitudinal studies met our inclusion criteria. Among the ten studies, combined modifiable lifestyle behaviors partly explained the association between exposure to stressors and elevated allostatic load in four cross-sectional and two longitudinal studies. Some evidence suggests that combined modifiable lifestyle behaviors may help explain the relationship between stressors and an elevated allostatic load. Further longitudinal studies with mediation analyses would strengthen these findings and help to confirm the mechanistic role of combined modifiable lifestyle behaviors underlying the relationship between stress exposure and allostatic load. • Exposure to stressors is associated with elevated allostatic load. • Lifestyle behaviors partially explained the stressors – allostatic load relationship. • Multi-wave study design with mediation analyses is needed to better understand the mechanism. The cohort of people requiring in-hospital rehabilitation continues to age and experience more co-morbidities. How these changes impact the role of the rehabilitation nurse within rehabilitation teams is not clearly established. Describe how nurses work within rehabilitation teams in hospital-based rehabilitation units. Scoping review Four datasets, Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science and EMBASE were searched. Studies were selected if they focused on nurses' roles in rehabilitation teams and were conducted in adult inpatient settings. Data were extracted and analysed by two researchers. An inductive descriptive approach was used for the analysis. Themes were finalised in a consensus meeting with the team. Twenty-four papers from Europe, United Kingdom, Canada and Australasia were found. Two themes were derived from the data: 'Nursing work is essential but rendered invisible' and 'Fluctuating teams and patient goals are momentarily stabilised through formal structures and processes'. Nurses were found to be working with three models of care, clinical, personal and rehabilitation within a culture focused only on rehabilitation. Nurses predominantly used relationship-based ad hoc communication strategies with other team members. Relationship-based interprofessional communication momentarily stabilises nurses' rehabilitation practice. Reframing rehabilitation nursing, to acknowledge the multiple models of care and communication mechanisms that are used in interprofessional teams is required. Building the team's capacity to work collaboratively in the fluctuating environment of rehabilitation requires attention to how intersubjectivity can be developed. Background: Sleep is a dynamic and essential part of human life and health. In healthcare settings, nurses are strategically placed to promote sleep and sleep health. In this regard, nursing actions should be based upon effective methods of assessment of patient sleep. Standardised sleep assessment does not currently occur in the care of acute hospitalised patients. Use of an appropriate measurement tool would help evaluate inpatient sleep. An effective, efficient sleep assessment tool is needed to aid clinicians. Such assessment would enable specific nursing intervention to be tailored to individual patients. Objective: The objective of this paper was to examine the literature on sleep measurement to identify subjective sleep assessment tools that may be suitable for routine use with hospitalised patients, and to evaluate their reliability and validity. Method: A review of existing literature was undertaken to identify and evaluate subjective sleep measurement tools. Results: The initial literature searches identified 402 articles, of which ten met the criteria for review. These reported on three subjective sleep measurement scales: the Richards- Campbell Sleep Questionnaire; the St Mary’s Hospital Sleep Questionnaire; and the Verran Snyder-Halpern Sleep Scale. The Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire is brief and easy to use. In specific samples, its items correlate with domains reflecting sleep quality and has shown excellent internal consistency. Equivocal results and scoring challenges were found with the St Mary’s Hospital Sleep Questionnaire. The Verran Snyder-Halpern Sleep Scale captured sleep disturbance and total sleep time, but time-to-complete is more burdensome than the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire. Conclusions: The current use of sleep assessment instruments in the acute hospital setting is restricted mainly to research activities. Of the three tools identified that could be used clinically to measure inpatient sleep, and although it was developed for use in the intensive care setting, the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire held greatest potential due to its ease and rapidity of use. Background: In 2008, we conducted a systematic review on the effects of nurse prescribing using studies with a comparative design. In view of the growing number of countries that are introducing nurse prescribing and the fact that several studies into nurse prescribing have been conducted recently, there is a need for an updated review to reassess the available information on the effects of nurse prescribing when compared to physician prescribing. Objective: To identify, appraise and synthesise the evidence on the effects of nurse prescribing when compared to physician prescribing on the quantity and types of medication prescribed and on patient outcomes. Design: A systematic review. Data sources: In addition to the previous review, which covered the literature up to 2005, 11 literature databases and four websites were searched for relevant studies from January 2006 up to January 2012 without limitations as to language or country. Moreover, full-text copies of all studies included in the previous review were reviewed. Review methods: A three-stage inclusion process, consisting of an initial sifting, checking full-text papers for inclusion criteria and methodological assessment, was performed independently by two reviewers. Data on effects were synthesised using narrative and tabular methods. Results: Thirty-five studies met the inclusion criteria. All but five studies had a high risk of bias. Nurses prescribe in comparable ways to physicians. They prescribe for equal numbers of patients and prescribe comparable types and doses of medicines. Studies comparing the total amount of medication prescribed by nurses and doctors show mixed results. There appear to be few differences between nurses and physicians in patient health outcomes: clinical parameters were the same or better for treatment by nurses, perceived quality of care was similar or better and patients treated by nurses were just as satisfied or more satisfied. Conclusions: The effects of nurse prescribing on medication and patient outcomes seem positive when compared to physician prescribing. However, conclusions must remain tentative due to methodological weaknesses in this body of research. More randomised controlled designs in the field of nurse prescribing are required for definitive conclusions about the effects of nurse prescribing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Cancer treatment can impair fertility. The aim of this review was to investigate (1) fertility information needs, receipt and provision, (2) fertility information preferences, and (3) factors associated with receiving/providing fertility information. Cancer patients' and professional caregivers' perspectives were considered. Design: Mixed-methods systematic review. Data sources: Six electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, CRD, Embase) were systematically screened to retrieve articles published between January 2001 and March 2012. Reference lists and conference abstracts were checked for additional publications. Review methods: The principles outlined in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Intervention were applied. Publications were included if they explored fertility-related information/communication in cancer patients/survivors of reproductive age or professional caregivers. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme for Qualitative Studies and the Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies were used to assess the methodological quality. A standardised form based on the Cochrane guidelines for systematic reviews was used to extract the data. Two independent reviewers performed all methodological steps. Results: Of the 1872 papers found, 27 were included in this review. The majority (66- 100%) of the cancer patients wanted information about the impact of cancer therapy on fertility. The need and importance were higher in younger and childless patients, and in patients having childbearing plans. The number of patients receiving this information ranged from 0% to 85%. Several factors were associated with the lack of information receipt, including female gender and age 35 years or older. Patients preferred information via an individual consultation. In the diagnostic phase patients needed information about the impact of the treatment on fertility and preservation options. At the end or after the treatment, information needs shifted towards long term effects. Professional caregivers experienced several barriers in providing fertility information, including caregiver-, patient- and institutional-related factors. Nurses in particular, perceived difficulty in providing fertility-related information due to additional barriers associated with limited responsibility and opportunity in fertility information provision. Conclusion: Professional caregivers experienced multiple barriers that hinder information provision. Further exploration of the role of Advanced Nurse Practitioners/Midwifes and the development of an evidence based intervention to overcome caregiver-related barriers are recommended to improve information provision. Background: Changes are occurring in global higher education. Nursing is not exempt from these changes, and must adapt in order to be competitive in a global market. The Bologna process has been integral in the last decade in modernizing European higher education. However, modernization does not occur without challenges. This paper addresses the Bologna process and the challenges it presents to nursing higher education in Europe. Objective: To describe the Bologna Process as it relates to European nursing education. Design and methodology: Literature review via searches of the following electronic. databases: Academic Search Premier, MEDLINE, PubMed, ERIC, and CINAHL. Search criteria included Bologna process, European higher education, nursing education, quality assurance, and ECTS. Results: Twenty-four peer-reviewed articles were included as well as one peer-reviewed presentation, one commission report, and one book. Conclusion: Further investigation is required to address the complexities of the Bologna process and its evolutionary changes as it relates to nursing education in Europe. Change is not always easy, and is often complex, especially as it relates to cross-border education that involves governmental regulation. Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common non-communicable long-term conditions in the world and is linked to high mortality, morbidity, loss of quality of life and high social and economic cost. Diabetes presents a serious health challenge, as it is a significant cause of ill health and premature death. Identification of barriers to self-care is critical for finding ways to reduce the adverse effects of this long-term condition. Objective: This review identified issues that influence ability to self-care for adults living with diabetes types 1 or 2. Design: A systematic review of qualitative research studies using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach. Data sources: An electronic search of Health Sciences databases for primary published qualitative studies was conducted April 2011. Reference lists of included articles were reviewed to identify other potential papers. Review methods: Studies that investigated issues identified by individuals living with diabetes type 1 or 2 that influenced ability to self-care were analysed using a process of meta-aggregation. Meta-aggregation involves the extraction of findings, the synthesis of findings through grouping or aggregating similar findings into themes and labelling with appropriate names and a statement that defines the theme and meta-aggregating the themes into overarching syntheses. Methodological quality was assessed by two reviewers against the JBI quality appraisal criteria for qualitative studies. Results: Thirty-seven qualitative studies were reviewed. The main issues impacting on an individual's ability to self-care were 'communication', 'education', 'personal factors', 'provider issues' and 'support'. Multiple barriers were found to influence the day-to-day management of diabetes. Key issues related to communication with health care providers, an education programme that allowed for incremental knowledge gain and experiential and vicarious learning and the provision of culturally sensitive care. Conclusions: People living with diabetes face many issues in their day-to-day manage- ment of the disease, compounded by vulnerability to wider situational, cultural and social issues. Objectives: This paper provides a quantitative review that estimates exposure rates by type of violence, setting, source, and world region. Design: A quantitative review of the nursing violence literature was summarized. Data sources: A literature search was conducted using the CINAHL, Medline and PsycInfo data bases. Studies included had to report empirical results using a nursing sample, and include data on bullying, sexual harassment, and/or violence exposure rates. A total of 136 articles provided data on 151,347 nurses from 160 samples. Procedure: Articles were identified through a database search and by consulting reference lists of review articles that were located. Relevant data were coded by the three authors. Categories depended on the availability of at least five studies. Exposure rates were coded as percentages of nurses in the sample who reported a given type of violence. Five types of violence were physical, nonphysical, bullying, sexual harassment, and combined (type of violence was not indicated). Setting, timeframe, country, and source of violence were coded. Results: Overall violence exposure rates were 36.4% for physical violence, 66.9% for nonphysical violence, 39.7% for bullying, and 25% for sexual harassment, with 32.7% of nurses reporting having been physically injured in an assault. Rates of exposure varied by world region (Anglo, Asia, Europe and Middle East), with the highest rates for physical violence and sexual harassment in the Anglo region, and the highest rates of nonphysical violence and bullying in the Middle East. Regions also varied in the source of violence, with patients accounting for most of it in Anglo and European regions, whereas patents' families/friends were the most common source in the Middle East. Conclusions: About a third of nurses worldwide indicated exposure to physical violence and bullying, about a third reported injury, about a quarter experienced sexual harassment, and about two-thirds indicated nonphysical violence. Physical violence was most prevalent in emergency departments, geriatric, and psychiatric facilities. Physical violence and sexual harassment were most prevalent in Anglo countries, and nonphysical violence and bullying were most prevalent in the Middle East. Background: Indwelling urinary catheters (IUC) are the primary cause of urinary tract infection in acute care. Current research aimed at reducing the use of IUCs in acute care has focused on the prompt removal of catheters already placed. This paper evaluates attempts to minimise the initial placement of IUCs. Objectives: To evaluate systematically the evidence of the effectiveness of interventions to minimise the initial placement of IUCs in adults in acute care. Design: Studies incorporating an intervention to reduce the initial placement of IUCs in an acute care environment in patients aged 18 and over that reported on the incidence of IUC placement were included in the review. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist has been used as a tool to guide the structure of the review. Data sources: MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, National Health Service Centre for Review and Dissemination and Cochrane Library. Review methods: A systematic review to identify and synthesise research reporting on the impact on interventions to minimise the use of IUCs in acute care published up to July 2011. Results: 2689 studies were scanned for eligibility. Only eight studies were found that reported any change (increase or decrease) in the level of initial placement of IUCs as a result of an intervention in acute care. Of the eight, six had an uncontrolled before-after design. Seven demonstrated a reduction in the initial use of IUCs post-intervention. There was insufficient evidence to support or rule out the effectiveness of interventions due to the small number of studies, limitations in study design and variation in clinical environments. Notably, each study listed the indications considered to be acceptable uses of an IUC and there was substantial variation between the lists of indications. Conclusions: More work is needed to establish when the initial placement of an IUC is appropriate in order to better understand when IUCs are overused and inform the development of methodologically robust research on the potential of interventions to minimise the initial placement of IUCs. Purpose: Scarring results after burns, trauma and surgical procedures, with the potential for devastating functional impact in the hand and upper limb. The health literature records numerous objective and subjective methods to assess scars. Objective scar assessments utilize technological devices or tools to measure scar characteristics, whereas subjective assessments are clinician or patient reported. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the quality and extent of psychometric evidence for assessments of scars and scarring, and to provide evidence-based guidelines for utilization of tools for general clinical practice and/or research in surgery or rehabilitation, including hand,| therapy. Methods: A structured search was conducted using multiple databases including OVID Embase, Medline, CINAHL, and PubMed. Articles related to burn, post-operative, trauma and mixed scars on humans that reported at least one psychometric property of an assessment tool were included. Papers were excluded if the primary focus was on wound healing, ulcers, and assessments exclusively about quality of life after scarring, or evaluations specific to a surgical procedure. Critical appraisal of included studies was performed using the Structured Effectiveness for Quality Evaluation of Psychometric Studies (SEQEPS). Results: Forty-nine articles related to scar assessments addressing psychometric properties were found to be relevant for this systematic review. Quality of the papers was variable, ranging from 13.45% to 87.50% on the SEQEPS. Five subjective assessments and 5 objective assessment tools were supported by high quality papers (at least 70% SEQEPS score). Conclusion: Numerous scar assessment tools exist to assist clinicians in the evaluation of scars; however, there is a significant gap in the breadth of the psychometric evidence supporting these tools. Research on technologies based on artificial intelligence in healthcare has increased during the last decade, with applications showing great potential in assisting and improving care. However, introducing these technologies into nursing can raise concerns related to data bias in the context of training algorithms and potential implications for certain populations. Little evidence exists in the extant literature regarding the efficacious application of many artificial intelligence -based health technologies used in healthcare. To synthesize currently available state-of the-art research in artificial intelligence -based technologies applied in nursing practice. Scoping review PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science and IEEE Xplore were searched for relevant articles with queries that combine names and terms related to nursing, artificial intelligence and machine learning methods. Included studies focused on developing or validating artificial intelligence -based technologies with a clear description of their impacts on nursing. We excluded non-experimental studies and research targeted at robotics, nursing management and technologies used in nursing research and education. A total of 7610 articles published between January 2010 and March 2021 were revealed, with 93 articles included in this review. Most studies explored the technology development (n = 55, 59.1%) and formation (testing) (n = 28, 30.1%) phases, followed by implementation (n = 9, 9.7%) and operational (n = 1, 1.1%) phases. The vast majority (73.1%) of studies provided evidence with a descriptive design (level VI) while only a small portion (4.3%) were randomised controlled trials (level II). The study aims, settings and methods were poorly described in the articles, and discussion of ethical considerations were lacking in 36.6% of studies. Additionally, one-third of papers (33.3%) were reported without the involvement of nurses. Contemporary research on applications of artificial intelligence -based technologies in nursing mainly cover the earlier stages of technology development, leaving scarce evidence of the impact of these technologies and implementation aspects into practice. The content of research reported is varied. Therefore, guidelines on research reporting and implementing artificial intelligence -based technologies in nursing are needed. Furthermore, integrating basic knowledge of artificial intelligence -related technologies and their applications in nursing education is imperative, and interventions to increase the inclusion of nurses throughout the technology research and development process is needed. We systematically reviewed data on rehabilitation, exercise, physical therapy, and other physical non-pharmacological interventions and offered evidence-based recommendations for the prevention and treatment of CIPN. A literature search using PubMed, Web of Science and CINAHL was conducted from database inception until May 31st, 2021. 2791 records were title-abstract screened, 71 papers were full-text screened, 41 studies were included, 21 on prevention and 20 on treatment of CIPN. Treatment type, cancer type, chemotherapy compounds were heterogeneous, sample size was small (median: N = 34) and intention-to-treat analysis was lacking in 26/41 reports. Because of the methodological issues of included studies, the reviewed evidence should be considered as preliminary. Exercise, endurance, strength, balance, and sensorimotor training have been studied in low-to-moderate quality studies, while the evidence for other treatments is preliminary/inconclusive. In today's industrial societies, many people die receiving professional care. Although specialist palliative and hospice care have often been identified as ideal care approaches to promote good dying, more people die receiving generalist palliative care. This integrative review examines how professional caregivers providing generalist palliative care in hospitals, nursing or private homes define good dying. Furthermore, through comparative analysis of existing empirical studies, it explores conceptual aspects in researching good dying that better reflect the social complexity of this phenomenon. Three databases (Scopus, MEDLINE, and CINAHL) were searched for peer-reviewed studies published between January 2000 and April 2020. Studies were selected if they presented original empirical findings from qualitative or quantitative studies on the perspective of professional caregivers in generalist palliative care (nurses, physicians, surgeons, clergy, and other staff) on good dying or related concepts (e.g., good death, dignity in dying, or quality of life at the end of life). 42 studies were included in the review. They identified good dying as expected, accepted and prepared dying, as free from pain and suffering, as socially embedded, as being at peace with one's life and situation, as supported with individualised and holistic care, as based upon professional cooperation and communication, and as in a peaceful and private environment. The paper concludes that the perspective of professional caregivers in generalist palliative care shares many elements of good dying with societal and specialist palliative care discourses around good dying. Through comparing the different studies, the review found that studies that explicated who benefitted from ideals and practices of good dying, questioned the dichotomous categorisation of good/bad dying, or discussed the compatibility of elements of good dying, provided more nuanced perspectives on this topic. To meet the growing needs of a diverse population, it is critical that healthcare service provision is underpinned by innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable services and solutions. The role of the nurse practitioner creates an opportunity to meet the increasing demands of complex care and enables greater access to high quality care. Understanding how best to support nurse practitioner candidates to develop into the nurse practitioner role will create greater opportunities to transform service delivery and improve healthcare outcomes. To identify key factors that support and positively impact the implementation of nurse practitioner candidacy programs and candidate experiences. A scoping review of research and grey literature was conducted using Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. For the research literature, eight electronic databases (Embase, Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Joanna Briggs Institute, PubMed and PsycINFO) were searched followed by a hand search of the reference lists of published systematic reviews and relevant topical papers. A review of national and international grey literature sources was completed. Identification of a service gap, developing and promoting a clear role for the nurse practitioner candidate, integration into a multi-disciplinary team with strong mentorship/preceptorship support, continuing professional development, and evaluation of the program were identified as key factors in the research and grey literature. A well-designed candidacy program can facilitate transition of the candidate into an autonomous, fully independent nurse practitioner. Recommendations to support the implementation of these roles into the clinical setting have been generated. Background: The population is ageing globally. Older people are more likely to have chronic diseases and disabilities and have contact with health services. Attitudes of healthcare professionals affect the quality of care provided and individual career preferences. Aim: To examine the international research relating to registered and student nurses' attitudes towards older people and the potential underpinning variables. Methods: A systematic search of 8 databases covering English and Chinese language publications since 2000 was undertaken which identified 25 papers. Findings: Reported attitudes towards older people were inconsistent with positive, negative and neutral attitudes being noted across registered and student nurses and appear to be slightly less positive since 2000. A range of variables have been examined as potential predictors of nurses' attitudes with age, gender and education level being investigated most frequently but none were consistent predictors. Preference to work with older people and knowledge of ageing appeared to be associated with positive attitudes towards older people. Conclusions: There is a growing need for registered nurses committed to working with older people, however, there is a dearth of well designed studies which investigate both the attitudes of registered and student nurses and the associated factors, and test interventions to inform workforce strategies. This paper presents a literature review of current research on factitious disorder by proxy (FDP). It identifies common symptoms and management techniques of both the child and caregiver in hopes of aiding primary care practitioners to better recognize the diagnosis and implement treatment. FDP is a subtle and dangerous form of child abuse that can cause significant morbidity and mortality. Knowledge of common symptoms displayed by the child and caregiver can assist in immediate legal and medical intercession, as well as initiation of treatment for all parties involved. Objective: To understand the process of help-seeking among heart failure patients from the perspectives of patients, caregivers and health professionals. Design: Systematic review using qualitative meta-synthesis. Methods: A systematic search (20th May 2011) was conducted to identify studies published in English as full papers 1995 reporting primary qualitative data with extractable heart failure-specific data or themes related to help-seeking in patients, caregivers or health professionals. Databases searched were: CINAHL, Medline, PsycInfo, Social Science Citation Index, Embase, Social policy/Practice, SocIndex, Ageline, Health Source Nursing, Scopus; additionally, we consulted with experts and manually searched references. Results: 58 studies (990 patients; 274 female, 527 male, 189 sex not described; 229 caregivers, 79 health professionals) were included. Heart failure help-seeking was embedded in daily experiences of heart failure but ongoing symptoms were confusing, ambiguous and disruptive; little support was available from professionals to interpret the presence and significance of fluctuations in symptoms for help-seeking. Other significant barriers to help-seeking were: avoidance-based coping, fear of hospitals and misplaced reluctance to be burdensome. Help-seeking was facilitated by good involvement and frank communication between patients, caregivers and health professionals and the presence of a sense of elevated personal risk. Conclusion: Health services should harness primary care providers and support patients and caregivers to prioritize development of objective symptom monitoring skills, recognize and personally assimilate the elevated risks of heart failure and help-seeking delays and discourage avoidance-based coping and unwarranted concerns that downplay the significance of heart failure and urgency to address symptoms. Abstract: Background: Institutionalized elderly continue to have the need for sexual expression and intimacy. Nurses often display negative responses when they are confronted with the sexual behavior of residents. They feel ashamed and do not know how to react. This generates feelings of discomfort, resulting in the denial of resident''s needs and desires for sexual fulfillment. Objectives: The objective of this review is to thoroughly analyze the literature about the knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of nursing staff toward sexuality in institutionalized elderly. We shed light onto the relationship between knowledge and attitudes, and determined whether certain demographic factors relate to the knowledge and attitudes of nursing home caregivers. Design: We conducted an extensive search of the electronic databases Medline, Cinahl, Psychinfo, Web of Science, Philosophers Index, Google Scholar, and Invert for papers published between January 1980 and September 2010. A broad range of search keywords was used. Findings: The quantitative studies revealed nursing staff to show rather positive attitudes toward later-life sexuality. However, the extent of the staff''s knowledge regarding sexuality in the aged seemed to be very limited. There was no consensus found about the relationship between knowledge and attitudes. As regards the influence of demographic variables, the results were very ambiguous. The qualitative studies showed that caregivers hold rather conservative attitudes toward sexuality in institutionalized elderly. Feelings of discomfort prevailed. The responses to residents’ sexual behavior were influenced by the staff''s own level of comfort related to sexuality issues and the ethos within the institution where they work. Conclusions: This review gives us a broad outline of the knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of geriatric nurses toward sexuality in institutionalized elderly. If we want the sexual needs of residents to be recognized, more research is needed. Especially needed are more in-depth qualitative studies that explore the experiences of nurses and managers. The development of a more accurate educational program could increase the knowledge of later-life sexuality and cultivate positive and permissive attitudes toward sexuality in the aged. Abstract: Background: Sleep is essential for well-being and recovery from illness. The critically ill are in significant need of sleep but at increased risk of sleep loss and disruption. Objectives: To determine the quality and duration of sleep experienced by adults who are patients in intensive care units and factors affecting their sleep. Design: An integrative approach was used for this literature review in order to explore the available evidence on this topic, which has yet to be fully investigated. Data sources: PubMed, CINAHL, Psychinfo, the Australian Digital Theses Program and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (Interdisciplinary) databases were searched for studies conducted about sleep in adult intensive care units. Manual searches of papers identified from this search were performed to find additional studies. Review methods: Data related to the quality and duration of sleep along with study design, sample size and intensive care context were extracted, evaluated and summarised. Results: Total sleep time is normal or reduced with significant fragmentation. Light sleep is prolonged and deep and rapid eye movement sleep are reduced. The most likely factors affecting sleep quality are high sound levels, frequent interventions and medications. Data obtained from polysomnography are supported by patient self reports. Considerable variation in data exists between patients and studies affecting generalizability. Existing criteria for staging sleep may be inadequate for quantifying sleep in intensive care patients. Conclusions: There is evidence that intensive care patients’ sleep is significantly disrupted. Alternative methods of quantifying sleep for intensive care patients may be required. Few large observational or interventional studies have used polysomnography and simultaneous recordings of intrinsic and extrinsic disruptive factors. Abstract: Objectives: It has been argued that mixed methods research can be useful in nursing and health science because of the complexity of the phenomena studied. However, the integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches continues to be one of much debate and there is a need for a rigorous framework for designing and interpreting mixed methods research. This paper explores the analytical approaches (i.e. parallel, concurrent or sequential) used in mixed methods studies within healthcare and exemplifies the use of triangulation as a methodological metaphor for drawing inferences from qualitative and quantitative findings originating from such analyses. Design: This review of the literature used systematic principles in searching CINAHL, Medline and PsycINFO for healthcare research studies which employed a mixed methods approach and were published in the English language between January 1999 and September 2009. Results: In total, 168 studies were included in the results. Most studies originated in the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK) and Canada. The analytic approach most widely used was parallel data analysis. A number of studies used sequential data analysis; far fewer studies employed concurrent data analysis. Very few of these studies clearly articulated the purpose for using a mixed methods design. The use of the methodological metaphor of triangulation on convergent, complementary, and divergent results from mixed methods studies is exemplified and an example of developing theory from such data is provided. Conclusion: A trend for conducting parallel data analysis on quantitative and qualitative data in mixed methods healthcare research has been identified in the studies included in this review. Using triangulation as a methodological metaphor can facilitate the integration of qualitative and quantitative findings, help researchers to clarify their theoretical propositions and the basis of their results. Abstract: It is generally assumed that income is strongly and positively associated with health. However, much of the evidence supporting this assumption comes from cross-sectional data or analyses that have not fully accounted for biases from confounding and health selection (the reverse pathway from health to income). This paper reports results of a systematic review of panel and longitudinal studies investigating whether changes in income led to changes in self-rated health (SRH) in adults. A variety of electronic databases were searched, up until January 2010, and thirteen studies were included, using data from five different panel or longitudinal studies. The majority of studies found a small, positive and statistically significant association of income with SRH, which was much reduced after controlling for unmeasured confounders and/or health selection. Residual bias, particularly from measurement error, probably reduced this association to the null. Most studies investigated short-term associations between income and SRH or the effect of temporary (usually one year) income changes or shocks, so did not rule out possibly stronger associations between health and longer-term average income or income lagged over longer time periods. Nevertheless, the true causal short-term relationship between income and health, estimated by longitudinal studies of income change and SRH that control for confounding, may be much smaller than that suggested by previous, mostly cross-sectional, research. Abstract: Background: Hospice care supports patients and their families physically and emotionally through the dying phase. In many countries a substantial portion of specialised end-of-life care is provided through hospices. Such care has developed outside of general healthcare and is commonly provided in a patient''s home or in dedicated facilities. Hospice provision may need to increase in the future due to an ageing population with a greater need for access to end-of-life care. Objectives: In this systematic review we sought to identify the current evidence on (1) the effectiveness, including cost-effectiveness, of hospices, and hospice care in a patient''s home and in nursing homes and (2) the experiences of those who use and of those who provide such services. Methods: We included quantitative and qualitative studies on hospice care that was provided in a patient''s home, nursing home or hospice. We did not include studies on end-of-life care that was provided as part of general healthcare provision, such as by general practitioners in primary care, community nurses or within general hospitals. For quantitative evaluations we included only those that compared hospice care with usual generalist healthcare. The databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library were searched from 2003 to 2009. Evidence was assessed for quality and data extractions double-checked. For quantitative studies we present the outcome data comparing hospice versus usual care. For qualitative evaluations we organise findings thematically. Findings: Eighteen comparative evaluations and four thematic papers were identified. Quantitative evidence, mostly of limited quality in design, showed that hospice care at home reduced general health care use and increased family and patient satisfaction with care. Main themes in the qualitative literature revealed that home hospice services support families to sustain patient care at home and hospice day care services generate for the patient a renewed sense of meaning and purpose. Conclusions: Although studies had methodological limitations, in this review we found much evidence to support the benefits of hospice care. There were limited evaluations found on the impact of hospice care on psychological well-being, such as symptoms of depression, and on inpatient hospice care and non-hospital related costs. Abstract: The Burn Specific Health Scale (BSHS) is the most commonly used instrument used to evaluate burn survivors’ quality of life (QOL). Multiple forms of the instrument exist; however, the literature lacks clarity in regard as to why a particular version of the BSHS was used and how the instrument performed in a variety of samples. Nurses work in stressful and demanding settings and often suffer from depression and burnout. Despite overlapping symptoms, research has been inconclusive regarding the discriminant validity of measures of burnout with regard to measures of depression. Such inconclusive discriminant validity might cause clinicians to fail to recognize and manage depression separately from burnout. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify the distinctiveness of burnout as a separate construct by examining the size of the relationship between burnout and depression among nurses as well as potential moderators. A stepwise method was used by searching 4 databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and EMBASE) to retrieve published papers in English examining the relationship between burnout and depression among nurses and reporting the effect sizes of their findings. We identified a total of 37 eligible studies. The pooled estimate showed a positive association between burnout and depression among nurses (r = 0.403, 95% CI [0.327, 0.474], p < 0.0001) and a slightly higher correlation coefficient for the Emotional Exhaustion subscale of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) measure (0.494, 95% CI [0.41, 0.57]). This review confirms a large burnout - depression correlation in nursing samples, adding to existing literature encompassing a variety of occupations. Empirical findings have shown significant and non-significant effects of advanced practice nursing roles within postoperative cardiac settings. The inconsistencies of the current literature preclude the identification of a significant effect of advanced practice nursing roles on patient and organizational outcomes. 1) identify patient and organizational outcomes of advanced practice nursing roles in postoperative cardiac surgery and 2) synthesize the evidence of current roles of advanced practice nurses in postoperative cardiac surgery to provide the best quality of care for patients. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted in six electronic databases, including Medline, CINHAL, Embase, Cochrane Database, Joanna Briggs Database and Web of Science, and the grey literature. Randomized controlled trials published after 1999 were included if they examined advanced practice nursing roles and recruited patients who underwent cardiac surgery. The study selection was performed by two independent reviewers, and consensus was achieved with a third reviewer. Data extraction was conducted by one reviewer and revised by a second reviewer. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed with the Evidence Project risk of bias tool by two independent reviewers and revised by a third reviewer. A narrative synthesis of the available evidence was completed. No meta-analysis technique was attempted because of the high heterogeneity of the included studies. Among 4,448 retrieved papers, ten randomized controlled trials and three secondary analyses were included in this review. The methodological quality of the included studies was moderate. All studies included a comparison group and the majority of the studies collected data using a blinded researcher. However, all studies were based on small sample sizes and failed to randomly recruit participants. Five studies implemented nurse practitioner roles and five studies implemented clinical nurse specialist roles. The advanced practice nursing care included health condition management, lifestyle promotion and coping strategies with patients. A total of 22 outcomes were identified, including 13 patient outcomes (e.g., depressive symptoms) and nine organizational outcomes (e.g., rehospitalization after discharge). Each outcome was examined in one to five studies. All of the included outcomes were associated with inconsistent findings. The findings from existing literature remain inconsistent. The high risk of bias and the small sample sizes could potentially explain the non-significant findings. Avenues for future research should focus on the development of methodologically high-quality studies with larger sample sizes to enhance our understanding of the effectiveness of advanced practice nursing roles. During the COVID-19 pandemic, visiting restrictions of different extents have been implemented. However, despite the long history of visiting restrictions in health care systems, little is known about their effects. This review sought to explore the consequences of visitor restrictions in health care services during the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic, integrative review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, based on a systematic search in PubMed, CHINAL full plus, Web of Science, PsychInfo, Scopus and the Cochrane Library. A total of 17 scientific papers covering intensive care, pediatric care, general medical care, hospital care, palliative care and nursing home settings were included. Although appreciation for the technical solutions enabling remote meetings was reported, visiting restrictions had several consequences, mainly negative, for the patient's health, the health and wellbeing of family members and the provision of care. Among physical health consequences, reduced nutrition intake, decreased activities of daily living and increased physical pain and symptoms were reported. Among mental health consequences for the patient, loneliness, depressive symptoms, agitation, aggression, reduced cognitive ability and overall dissatisfaction were observed. For family members, worry, anxiety and uncertainty occurred, and they reported an increased need for information from care providers. Family members of neonatal intensive care unit patients reported less bonding with their child and family relation disturbances due to the restrictions. For care providers, visiting restrictions added the burdens of ethical dilemmas, learning new technical means to enable social interaction and an increased demand for communication with families and providing social support to both family members and patients. When implementing visiting restrictions in health care services, decision makers and nurses need to be aware of their potential negative effects and adapt the provision of care to compensate for such effects. Nurses in all sectors should be aware that visiting restrictions may affect patients, families, and health care services for longer than the actual pandemic. Grief is understandably severe in the first days, if not weeks or months, following the death of a beloved person. Unless the mourner develops complicated grief, which is prolonged severe and impactful grief, the initial acute grief lessens in severity over time, although waves of significant grief will still occur with grief triggers. A scoping research literature review was undertaken in early 2021 to determine how often grief triggers occur, what the most common grief triggers are, the impact of triggered grief, and what can be done (by those not diagnosed with complicated grief) to manage grief triggers and mitigate the effect of them. Nine academic library databases were searched for English-language research reports using the keywords "grief trigger(s)" and "research": CINAHL, Directory of Open Access (online) Journals, Humanities Index, JSTOR, Medline (Ovid), Periodicals Index Online, PsychArticles, Scopus, and Web of Science. Six research papers relevant for review were published in the last two decades, with some evidence gained on how often grief triggers occur, what constitutes a grief trigger, and the impact of grief triggers. • Internet-based prenatal interventions had a small effect on depression. • Websites and mobile devices were the most common internet-based prenatal education. • Promoting communications and social support enabled the bridge of online-based education. This study investigated the effect of internet-based prenatal interventions among pregnant women. Articles regarding randomized controlled trials of internet-based prenatal education interventions were investigated through a systematic review. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, ERIC, and RISS on material published between 1985 and 2020. The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed papers in English regarding randomized controlled trials of internet-based prenatal education interventions. The exclusion criteria were studies in which high-risk pregnant women participated, interventions that were conducted face-to-face or only involved telephone contact, and studies that reported outcomes related to the baby's health. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Risk of Bias 2.0 methodology checklist. Heterogeneity testing suggested a homogeneous sample (I2 = 0%, p =.45). Meta-analysis through standardized mean differences showed that six studies had an effect on postpartum depression, with an effect size of −0.16 (95% CI, −0.26 to −0.05). Conclusion : This study demonstrated that internet-based prenatal interventions had an impact on maternal depression during the postpartum period. This paper aims to explore how self-care is currently defined and conceptualized in nursing education literature and identify gaps in current conceptualizations of self-care for nursing students. Given the considerable stressors experienced by nursing students, self-care is an important concept for enhancing well-being. However, self-care has been poorly defined in the literature to date, contributing to challenges in integrating self-care into nursing education in support of student mental health and well-being. A scoping review was undertaken in accordance with Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) framework and Levac et al.'s (2010) subsequent guidance. The search was conducted up to 1 September 2020 across three databases: Medline (OVID), PsycINFO and CINAHL. Search terms 'self-care', 'nursing students' and 'nursing education' were used. Criteria for inclusion of articles included peer-reviewed articles published in English that addressed self-care in the context of nursing education and/or nursing students and provided a definition of self-care. Two reviewers independently screened 1181 records by title and abstract, with a third reviewer resolving discrepancies. Subsequently, full-text review was completed for 119 articles. Twenty-seven studies were included in the review, including 21 empirical articles and 6 non-empirical articles. Sixteen (59%) articles described an educational intervention, including self-care courses, assignments, or integration of self-care modalities as a classroom activity. Qualitative thematic analysis of article aims, and self-care definitions illustrated three central themes in the conceptualization of self-care: self-care as an aspect of holistic nursing; self-care as practices that ensure a healthy lifestyle; and self-care as activities undertaken in response to stress. There is considerable variability in how self-care for nursing students is conceptualized, contributing to inconsistencies in the integration of this concept into nursing education. Nurse educators are encouraged to support students in identifying their own self-care strategies and engage in reflection and action toward shifting systemic contributors to stress and burnout among nursing students. Introduction: Chemsex is a specific form of sexualised drug use (SDU) that is an emerging public health issue among men who have sex with men (MSM). Although the recent focus on chemsex is a reflection of the associated harms it is important to understand SDU more broadly and its associations with risk behaviours. Additionally, some of the reasons suggested for MSM engagement in SDU are also likely to apply to women who have sex with women (WSW) and trans people. The aim of this review was to investigate SDU, including chemsex, among lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people internationally in relation to sexual health outcomes (HIV status, STI diagnosis, condom use).Methods: Papers that were published between January 2010 and June 2020 reporting SDU in MSM, WSW, or trans people were identified through Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus and Web of Science. Results were synthesised using a narrative approach.Results: The search identified 2,710 publications, of which 75 were included in the final synthesis. The majority of studies measured SDU among MSM (n = 71), and four studies measured SDU among trans people. Research into SDU had been conducted in 55 countries and 32 countries had recorded the use of a chemsex drug among MSM, although the drugs used to define chemsex varied. Among studies that researched MSM, SDU was most commonly investigated in relation to condomless anal intercourse (n = 42), followed by HIV prevalence (n = 35), and then STI diagnoses (n = 27). Drug use was generally associated with sexual health outcomes, but particularly in chemsex studies.Conclusions: SDU research is lacking among WSW and trans people, despite trans women having a high HIV prevalence. Sexual and reproductive health of young people is an international concern with the increasing interest in healthy pregnancy and childbirth. mHealth interventions involve the use of mobile technologies for health support, have wide applications in clinical nursing practice, and play an increasingly important role in disseminating sexual and reproductive health-related information in emerging adulthood. However, there is a lack of evidence on the effects of mHealth intervention programs. This meta-analysis systematically assessed the effects of mHealth interventions on contraceptive use and pregnancy occurrence in emerging adulthood to identify the characteristics of a successful mHealth intervention program. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Four central electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL complete, and the Cochrane Library) were searched for relevant articles published from inception to May 2020. Data extraction and quality appraisal were performed independently by two reviewers. Eleven papers on the effects of mHealth interventions on sexual and reproductive health in emerging adulthood were selected. The included studies were assessed for the risk of bias with the Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2) tool. Overall and subgroup meta-analyses were conducted using STATA 16.0. Heterogeneity within studies was calculated using I2. We tested the effect of mHealth interventions on contraceptive use and pregnancy occurrence to identify the impact of sexual and reproductive health. mHealth interventions improved the use of contraception (OR 1.21; 95% CI: 1.02–1.43, I 2 = 20.7%; p = 0.234) although the effect on pregnancy occurrence was not significant (OR 0.80, 95% CI: 0.61–1.05, I 2 = 0.0%, p = 0.950). In subgroup analysis, mHealth interventions especially improved oral contraceptive use (OR 1.43, 95% CI: 1.15–1.77, I 2 = 0.0%, p = 0.784). Regarding the communication type, two-way communication showed statistically significant results with the mHealth intervention in the experimental group (OR 1.28, 95% CI: 1.06–1.54, I 2 = 0.0%, p = 0.872). This meta-analysis found a positive effect of mHealth intervention on contraception, whereas the impact on pregnancy occurrences was limited. We also confirmed the factors underlying effective mHealth interventions from the results of our review. This review aimed to explore the impact of ageing simulation for healthcare professional education to promote person-centred care towards older people. Ageing simulation is an emerging educational approach to facilitate the learning of healthcare professionals on ageing and older people. However, there is limited evidence available exploring its use and impact on the person-centred care of older people. An integrative review approach was used. Four databases were searched from January 2010 to April 2020 including CINAHL, MEDLINE, Web of Science and PsychINFO, 21 papers were identified and analysed. Three interrelating themes were identified to outline the findings across the reviewed studies: ageing simulation use (theme 1), characteristics (theme 2) and impact (theme 3). Results showed literature available on ageing simulation is varied, ranged in study quality and applied several ageing simulation iterations making comparisons across the studies difficult. Despite these challenges it was clear ageing simulation is a promising educational approach currently being used to promote person-centred care for older people in healthcare professionals. The purpose of this paper was to conduct a systematic review of the literature on violence and aggressive behavior by and towards older adults in the context of serious mental illness. Literature was identified via comprehensive searches of PsycInfo, MedLine, AgeLine, CINAHL, PubMed, Biomedical Reference Collection, Sociological Abstracts, and Google Scholar. Key findings of the review are as follows: (1) older adults with serious mental illness are at risk for violent and aggressive behavior; (2) there is limited research on aggressive behavior in older adults with serious mental illness who do not have comorbid dementia; and (3) older adults are at increasing risk of experiencing aggressive behaviors from their mentally ill adult children for whom they provide care. Limitations of the available literature reviewed include possible underreporting of violent and aggressive behavior, a lack of consensus regarding the age at which one is considered to be an older adult, and varying subjective experiences across participants regarding what constitutes violent and aggressive behavior. The literature reviewed suggests that preventing and managing aggression and violence by or towards older adults should emphasize a collaborative approach that integrates the social, interpersonal, situational, and cultural contexts both in future research and clinical practice. • Older adults with SMI are at risk for violent and aggressive behavior. • Limited work exists on violence in older adults with SMI without comorbid dementia. • Older adults are at increasing risk of aggression from mentally ill adult children. • A collaborative approach is needed to prevent and manage violence and aggression. Flow in sport, physical activity, and physical education can have widespread benefits for youth participants. The aim of this study was to systematically review, synthesise, and appraise literature on flow in youth sport, physical activity, and physical education. More specifically, the review explored the: methods used to study flow; conceptualisation of flow; antecedents associated with flow; interventions and mechanisms to facilitate flow states; and outcomes associated with flow. Electronic database and manual searches in September 2020 yielded 2,292 potential papers. Overall, 39 studies with 17,123 youths published over 36 years (1984–2020) satisfied the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. As the first systematic review of flow in physical activity contexts specifically in youth-aged participants, the synthesis identified several issues with the measurement and conceptualisation of flow. While evidence has accumulated on antecedents and outcomes of flow in youth sport, physical activity, and physical education, the reliance on cross-sectional designs prevents the inference of causality. Interventions designed to facilitate more frequent or intense flow experiences have been relatively unsuccessful, thus suggesting that further research is required to explain the occurrence of flow and to develop interventions that reliably induce flow states in youths. Overall, the review highlights a need for higher quality research to make meaningful progress in understanding of the flow experience in youth sport, physical activity, and physical education. Evidence increasingly shows that changes to social security policies can affect population mental health. Thus, in the context of rising burden of mental illness, it is of major importance to better understand how expansions and contractions to the social security system may impact on mental health of both adults and children. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a synthesis of observational literature on the effects on mental health and inequalities in mental health of social security reforms. We conducted a systematic review of quantitative observational studies of specific national and regional social security policy changes in high-income countries and summarised the mental health effects of these policies. We searched seven electronic databases, including Medline, PsychInfo, Embase, CINAHL, ASSIA (Proquest), Scopus and Research Papers in Economics from January 1979 to June 2020. We included both objective and subjective mental health and wellbeing measures. The study quality was assessed using the Validity Assessment tool for econometric studies. We identified 13,403 original records, thirty-eight of which were included in the final review. Twenty-one studies evaluated expansionary social security policies and seventeen studies evaluated contractionary policies. Overall, we found that policies that improve social security benefit eligibility/generosity are associated with improvements in mental health, as reported by fourteen of the included studies. Social security policies that reduce eligibility/generosity were related to worse mental health, as reported by eleven studies. Ten studies found no effect for either policies contracting or expanding welfare support. Fourteen studies also evaluated the impact on mental health inequalities and found that contractionary policies tend to increase inequalities whereas expansionary policies have the opposite effect. Changes in social security policies can have significant effects on mental health and health inequalities across different recipient groups. Systematic reviews on healthy ageing interventions have primarily focused on assessing their effectiveness, not the implementation processes underpinning them, and the factors influencing program effectiveness. This has created a knowledge gap about what are effective implementation approaches, and how to scale up such interventions at the population level. Our aim in this rapid review was to synthesise the evidence on implementation of effective healthy ageing interventions, and to identify the factors that influence population-level implementation of these interventions. Following the PRISMA checklist, we searched for papers in six databases: Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, PsycArticles and PsycINFO. A narrative synthesis was used to summarise the results. Twenty-nine articles reporting on 21 healthy ageing interventions (studies) were included in the review. The findings show that a wide range of approaches to implementation were used including collaborative partnership, co-design, use of volunteers, person centred-care, and self-directed/professional-led approaches. The key implementation drivers were the use of behavioural change techniques, social interaction, tailoring of interventions, booster sessions, and multi-component and multi-professional team approach to intervention design and delivery. The effectiveness of healthy ageing interventions is contingent on a number of factors including the type of implementation approaches used, the context in which programs are implemented, and the specific mechanisms that may be at play at the individual older adult level. This paper aims to explore and classify studies of the impact and effectiveness of continuing professional education for registered nurses, using existing reviews of literature. Four healthcare databases were searched for publications from 2010 to July 2019 and electronic keywords searches were conducted. Umbrella review methodology was applied and Kirkpatrick's Four-Level Model of training evaluation was used to synthesise results and explicate the levels of educational impact. Of 16 included reviews, 13 were of simulation-based education activities. Three reviews of experimental studies demonstrated strong positive evidence of education impact on nurses' learning. Objective evidence of transfer of knowledge and skills into practice included improved interprofessional team performance and less time taken to complete clinical tasks. Reports of practice improvements and intention to change practice provided further evidence of impact. A small number of individual studies measured impact on service delivery, reporting positive and neutral results. We conclude that nurses learn and newly acquired knowledge and skills are often transferred into practice. Collection of robust evaluative data after completion of education is limited by practical considerations such as access to learners, resources and time constraints. Pandemics and epidemics are public health emergencies that can result in substantial deaths and socio-economic disruption. Nurses play a key role in the public health response to such crises, delivering direct patient care and reducing the risk of exposure to the infectious disease. The experience of providing nursing care in this context has the potential to have significant short and long term consequences for individual nurses, society and the nursing profession. To synthesize and present the best available evidence on the experiences of nurses working in acute hospital settings during a pandemic. This review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for systematic reviews. A structured search using CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, MedNar, ProQuest and Index to Theses was conducted. All studies describing nurses' experiences were included regardless of methodology. Themes and narrative statements were extracted from included papers using the SUMARI data extraction tool from Joanna Briggs Institute. Thirteen qualitative studies were included in the review. The experiences of 348 nurses generated a total of 116 findings, which formed seven categories based on similarity of meaning. Three synthesized findings were generated from the categories: (i) Supportive nursing teams providing quality care; (ii) Acknowledging the physical and emotional impact; and (iii) Responsiveness of systematised organizational reaction. Nurses are pivotal to the health care response to infectious disease pandemics and epidemics. This systematic review emphasises that nurses' require Governments, policy makers and nursing groups to actively engage in supporting nurses, both during and following a pandemic or epidemic. It has also been reported that they achieve poorer results academically than their peers. There is a further body of evidence to suggest delayed language skills. These potentially related outcomes are often reported separately. To review published and unpublished research into the nature of difficulties related to spoken and written language across all non-syndromic cleft diagnoses. To review any evidence of associations between comorbidities. A scoping review was carried out in October 2016 and updated in June 2019 following published methodology (Arksey & O'Malley, 2005; Levac et al. 2010). A search of the literature over the two time points found 38 papers in total. Three main themes were found: oral language skills, reading and auditory processing difficulties. There is evidence of early language delay in children born with CL/P. Evidence of persistent oral language problems is less conclusive. Many studies have reported scores within the average range for language, auditory processing and reading but poorer outcomes when compared to non-cleft control groups. However, studies have used a range of outcome measures, making comparisons difficult. Moreover there is no clear evidence how these difficulties might relate to speech outcomes or educational achievement and no comparison to other populations with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). 'Living in the moment' is an essential part of dignity-conserving practice in end-of-life care settings. Although living in the moment is important for care at the end of life, from the perspective of both the person and their family, there is no clear conceptual understanding of what it represents. To explore the concept of 'living in the moment' in the context of dignity-conserving care at the end of life. A concept analysis. The databases of Medline, CinAHL, PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, SocINDEX and Cochrane were searched for studies published between 1941 and 2019, and searches of dictionaries and grey literature, as well as hand-searching were conducted, to yield qualitative, mixed methods and systematic reviews published in English, related to the term 'living in the moment'. The methods of Walker and Avant were used to identify antecedents, attributes and consequences of the concept of 'living in the moment'. The literature review generated a total of 37 papers for this concept analysis. The attributes identified were (1) simple pleasure, (2) prioritising relationships, (3) living each day to the fullest, (4) maintaining normality, and (5) not worrying about the future. The antecedents were (1) awareness of dying, (2) living with life-threatening illness, (3) positive individual growth, and (4) living with an uncertain future. The consequences were (1) a good quality of life, (2) preserving dignity, and (3) coping with the uncertainty of life. A universal definition and conceptual model of the main concept, including theoretical relationships between its antecedents, attributes and consequences, was developed. The definition and proposed conceptual model can allow instruments to be developed that measure the effects, existence or attributes of the concept, and identify a theoretical model, and can also lead to new perspectives and strategies for implementation by nurses to improve dignified person-centred care at the end of life. The scope of methodological development and innovation in multi- and mixed methods design is endless and, at times, challenging. The latter is especially true with regards to the integration of data generated through different methods. About a decade ago, Professor Jo Moran-Ellis and her colleagues at the University of Sussex suggested a framework for analytical integration known as "following a thread." Despite an increased focus within health services research on different perspectives and approaches to successful data integration, the framework's usability and application have not yet been well described. This systematic review aims to integrate and synthesise published accounts of the framework and its applications. Seven electronic databases were utilised. Included were peer-reviewed scientific papers published in English from 2006 - 2018. The authors independently screened eligible publications by title and abstract. Thirteen studies were included in our systematic review. One notable finding is that in almost half of the cases (n = 6), the framework had been applied as an analytical integration framework in single studies using multiple qualitative methods. Overall, the descriptions and accounts of the framework were sparse and lacked transparency. Accounts of the analytical integration framework could be said to fall within three overarching areas: (1) applications of the framework, (2) justifications for analytical integration, and (3) benefits and shortfalls of the framework. Data integration is often one of the major method steps in multi- and mixed methods designs. To further the future development of methodologically sound frameworks for analytical integration, it is essential that they are sufficiently described so as to ensure validation of the framework's usability and replicability. We pooled the results using a random-effects model. We included seven studies with 770 randomized patients with dementia, which compared valproic acid with placebo. Indeed, there were no significant differences found in the scores of Mini–mental State Examination, Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory and number of patients with adverse events. Valproic acid is generally well-tolerated in patients with dementia, even in long-term therapy for 24 months. Insufficient evidences are found to support valproic acid in the treatment of dementia for cognitive, psychiatric symptoms or disease-modifying. Symphytum officinale (comfrey), Tussilago farfara (coltsfoot) and Borago officinalis (borage) have long histories of therapeutic use, but their safety has been questioned due to the presence of unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). The evidence base underlying these concerns relies in part on case reports. This systematic review assesses these case reports for their reliability to inform this debate. Study selection was restricted to case reports describing possible pyrrolizidine alkaloid related harm and ingestion of comfrey, coltsfoot or borage. An extensive search of academic databases was conducted. Papers meeting the criteria were critically appraised. The search resulted in 11 appropriate case reports, none of which involved borage. Nine reports were assessed for causality and indicated some degree of association between the material ingested and the adverse event. Lack of unequivocal identification of the species ingested compromised attribution and was a significant source of uncertainty. Three levels of identity confusions were found; misidentification or substitution at the level of the whole herb; omission of appropriate botanical identification and attribution of a specific PA to either comfrey or coltsfoot when it is a constituent found in other plants of established toxicity. These cases are an unreliable body of evidence on which to draw conclusions about the safety of the oral consumption of Symphytum officinale and Tussilago farfara. Toxicological studies based on oral ingestion of phytochemically-complex preparations of these herbs may be the most accurate methodology for assessing clinical risk. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on experiences of aging in place in the United States. Systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative studies. Eligible studies reported peer-reviewed qualitative research on experiences of aging in place in the United States with full-text available in English. Three reviewers independently used Covidence software to screen titles and abstracts followed by full texts. We assessed quality and risk of bias using a modified version of the Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist for Qualitative Research. Qualitative data analysis was conducted using meta-ethnography, following Noblit and Hare's seven-step method of translation and synthesis to generate a novel conceptual model. Of 2659 papers screened, 37 unique studies were eligible for inclusion, reported in 38 publications. The studies were conducted in 16 states and published between 1994 and 2018. The included samples represented 1199 participants in total, with mean ages ranging from 48 to 91 years. The gender of the samples ranged from 20% to 100% female, with a median of 77%. One-third of the included studies did not report participants' race/ethnicity, and half of the remaining study samples were at least 90% white; however, 20% of the studies focused exclusively on experiences of racial/ethnic minority older adults. Using meta-ethnography, we developed a new conceptual model of aging in place in the United States as a dynamic process of balancing threats and agency in relation to experiences of identity, connectedness, and place. We found that people aging in place were engaged in significant work to cope with unpredictable needs and challenges by changing their mindset, adapting their home environment to accommodate new needs, and finding different ways to connect with important people in their lives. Agency was shaped by resources and restrictions on choice, and where threats to aging in place outweighed an individual's sense of agency, the consequences included feelings of uncertainty, isolation, and dislocation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic review of qualitative studies to evaluate experiences of aging in place in the United States. The findings of our meta-ethnographic synthesis led to the development of a new conceptual model of aging in place highlighting the dynamic tensions involved in balancing threats and agency.
