Abstract Short answer tests (SAT) are an assessment that examines nursing students' knowledge and can be used to evaluate expectations for student educational success. The purpose of this literature review is to combine the best available evidence as to whether short answer test papers meet nursing facility curricula learning outcomes. A literature review was performed consisting of data bases which included; ERIC, SCOPUS, CINAHL MEDLINE, COCHRANE LIBRARY and JOHANNA BIGGS INSTITUTE (JBI). The following keywords were used: Short answer test, written assessment, quiz, organisations, university, higher degree education, tertiary education, nursing, perceptions, attitude, opinions, thoughts, feeling and belief. The majority of studies demonstrated that short answer tests equip nursing students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills for the clinical setting. Three major themes were identified: the effects of increasing class sizes; authenticity and the validity of short answer tests. Short answer tests are commonly used in undergraduate nursing programs to evaluate students' level of knowledge which consists of their ability to critically analyse and problem solve. To maintain authenticity and validity of an assessment, there is a need for an evidence-based approach to their design to meet the core learning objectives within the curriculum. This study aimed to explore the published research on the relationship between climate change and skin cancer and the implications for prevention, management and further research. Scoping review. This scoping review following JBI methodology reviewed English articles identified in searches of MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science and Scopus on 14 April 2023. The screening of articles was completed by two independent reviewers. Data were extracted by a single reviewer and checked by another. A causal pathway diagram was iteratively developed throughout the review and was used to categorise the findings. The search identified 1376 papers, of which 45 were included in the final review. Nine papers reported primary research, and 36 papers were reviews, perspectives, commentaries, editorials, or essays. The papers examined climate change influencing behaviours related to ultraviolet exposure (30 papers), ambient temperature (21 papers) and air pollution (five papers) as possible risk factors; occupational, rural, and contextual factors affecting skin cancer (11 papers); and prevention and access to health care in the context of climate change (seven papers). Most papers were published in journals in subject areas other than health. This review identified ultraviolet radiation, occupation, rising temperature, individual behaviour and air pollution as possible influences on skin cancer rates. Furthermore, it highlights the complexity and uncertainties in the relationship between climate change and skin cancer and the need for further research on this relationship, including primary epidemiological research and reviews that follow recognised review guidelines and include assessment of health services and social determinants in the causal pathways of this relationship. Pennsylvania Shoulder Score (PSS) is a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) that is gaining use when examining shoulder-specific outcomes. To date, a systematic review of the PSS measurement properties has not been published. To systematically locate, appraise, and synthesize the evidence concerning the measurement properties of the PSS. Systematic literature review. A pair of raters conducted a literature search using pre-defined keywords from 5 databases (PubMed, CINAHL, SPORTdiscus, PsychINFO, Scopus) during the week of October 23, 2022. Critical appraisal of study design for psychometric articles was used to assess methodological quality and risk of bias. Measurement property data were synthesized with pooled estimates for the indices of test-retest reliability (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable change (MDC), Cronbach α (CA), effect size (ES), and standardized response means (SRM) calculated from applicable studies. A total of 13 articles met the inclusion criteria for this review. Methodological quality was agreed upon between the 2 raters with a weighted kappa of 0.77, and 9/13 of the articles were rated above 70%. Test-retest reliability of the PSS total score ranged between 0.90 and 0.94, and construct validity was high when compared to other shoulder-specific PROMs (0.75 < r > 0.96). Responsiveness of the PSS was large across all studies with few PSS subscales dropping to moderate. Pooled MDC90 of the total PSS was 12.13 points, and the pooled ES of the total PSS was 0.85. The scope of this review demonstrates positive measurement properties of the PSS as a reliable, valid, and responsive measurement of shoulder-specific PROM. However, there are few studies examining the measurement properties of the PSS and more research is needed to assess cross-cultural appropriateness and factor analysis of the questions contained in the PSS. • Shoulder-specific functional, pain, and satisfaction questions are part of the PSS. • This paper finds the PSS to be a reliable, valid, and responsive outcome measure. • This paper provides pooled outcomes across studies of the PSS. • The PSS lacks factor-analysis and has limited evidence on measurement properties. Multiplatform messaging applications also referred to as cross-platform instant messaging play an important role in delivery of healthcare and education with its low cost, ease of use and accessibility. To evaluate the existing evidence regarding the use of multiplatform messaging applications in facilitating consultations and decision-making processes in the context of burns care, as well as to assess the impact of such applications on burns care and rehabilitation. A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and PROSPERO protocol CRD42021265203. The CASP and JBI tools were used to evaluate the quality of the studies. Eight hundred fifty-three papers were retrieved from PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, EMBASE and LILACS published up to July 2022 (updated August 2023) with no time restrictions applied. An analysis of the seven studies included in this review, inclusive of 16 Multiplatform messaging applications, revealed six themes. These encompassed the utilization of social media for directing and managing clinical practice, as a mode of communication, for evaluating the quality-of-care provision, for investigating available platforms and their technological features, measuring quality of life and for examining issues related to confidentiality. Multiplatform messaging applications offer a solution for individuals with burn injuries to stay in direct contact with burn specialist clinicians for their follow-up and subsequent rehabilitation phase of recovery. • Multiplatform messaging applications play an important role in burn care. • Such platforms avoid unnecessary admissions and are easily accessible and cost- effective. • Multiplatform messaging apps allow burn survivors and caregivers to maintain direct communication with clinicians. • Multiplatform messaging applications lack transparency regarding confidentiality and privacy. Complementing the well-established evidence base on health inequalities experienced by migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in the UK; we examined the extent to which their right to equal non-discriminatory access to health services (promotive, preventive, curative) was upheld during the COVID-19 pandemic. Arksey and O′Malley's scoping review framework. A comprehensive search was conducted on Medline, PubMed, and CINAHL using detailed MESH terms, for literature published between 01 January 2020 and 01 January 2024. The process was supported by a ten-page Google search and hand searching of reference lists. 42 records meeting the inclusion criteria were charted, coded inductively and analysed thematically in an integrated team-based approach. Dissonance between immigration regulation and health governance is illustrated in four themes: Health systems leveraged to (re)enforce the hostile environment; Dissonance between health rights on paper and in practice; Structural failures to overcome communication and digital exclusion; and COVID-19 vaccine (in)equity exacerbated fear, mistrust and exclusion. Migrants, refugees and asylum seekers encountered substantial individual, structural and policy-level barriers to accessing healthcare in the UK during COVID-19. Insecure immigration status, institutional mistrust, data-sharing and charging fears, communication challenges and digital exclusion impacted heavily on their ability to access healthcare in an equitable non-discriminatory manner. An inclusive and innovative health equity and rights-based responses reaching all migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are warranted if the National Health Service is to live up to its promise of ' leaving no one behind' in post-pandemic and future responses. To improve health and safety outcomes at mass gathering events (MGEs) for young attendees, it is essential to understand the psychosocial factors that may influence behaviour so that the implementation of support strategies before, during and after MGEs can be developed to enhance outcomes. This review identifies the psychosocial outcomes that may occur at MGEs, including social connection, substance use, risky behaviours and psychological distress and examines what interventions have been implemented to target these outcomes. Scoping review. This study examined MGE psychosocial interventions with predominantly youth attendees was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Papers were collected from the databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase and PsycINFO. Titles and abstracts were scanned for relevance, followed by a full-text screening. Information relevant to the research question was extracted from papers meeting the inclusion criteria. Twenty-six papers met the inclusion criteria. The psychosocial factors that were most studied included social influence, social interactions and psychological stressors, which lead to behaviours such as excessive alcohol consumption, drug taking, risky casual sex and risk taking amongst psychological factors of young attendees. Effective interventions implemented before or during MGEs, such as alcohol-free zones, antidrinking campaigns, psychoeducation and disapproval from parents with regard to drinking alcohol, showed promise in reducing harms. Psychosocial interventions have the potential to reduce harms and enhance well-being for young people attending MGEs. This review has identified gaps and opportunities in the current literature with regard to psychosocial interventions and strategies to support young people at MGEs and makes recommendations to support the development and refinement of evidence-based interventions aimed at young MGE attendees. Background: Given the potential for social media to spread health misinformation, it is important to understand how trusts impact adolescents' engagement with health content on social media. Objective: To explore the concept of trust when adolescents (13-18 years) engage with health information on social media. Five relevant databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, ERIC, and CINAHL) were systematically searched alongside Google Scholar and reference lists of included papers. Studies were included if they examined adolescents' trust when engaging with health information on social media. Study Appraisal and Synthesis Methods: Thematic analysis was used to synthesize the findings from this review. Results: Thirty-four papers were included. Three key domains were explored: trust in the social media platform/ service (general distrust of social media for health information; safety and privacy); trust in other users (mistrust of unknown users; fear of bullying or judgment; trust in friends or peers; celebrities and popularity; trust in others' experience and the importance of social support); trust in content (tone and appearance of health information; expertise and verification; advertising, pushed, and suggested content). Limitations: Narrow geographic representation of papers and limited quantitative studies. Conclusions and Implications of Key Findings: Adolescents' trust in health information on social media involves a complex interplay between trust in: social media platforms, other users, and health content. BACKGROUND: Reach Out and Read (ROR) is an evidence-based literacy promotion intervention that leverages the near-universal access to children of primary care practices to promote optimal child development. While several studies document ROR's effectiveness, its implementation remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines the existing literature to better understand ROR implementation. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, ERIC, Web of Science, Academic Search Premier, ProQuest Education Database, and CINAHL. STUDY SELECTION: We included peer-reviewed English-language papers focusing on ROR in an ambulatory setting in North America. DATA EXTRACTION: Extracted variables were informed by the Template for Intervention Description and Replication checklist and included publication year, title, author(s), clinic location, study design, study aim, ROR implementation, modifications, implementation assessment, barriers, facilitators, and outcomes. RESULTS: Seventy-one papers were included, of which 43 were research articles. We identified substantial variation in ROR implementation including differences in components delivered. A considerable number of research articles did not assess ROR implementation. The most common barriers to ROR implementation were at the system level (ie, financing and inadequate time). Modifications and enhancements to ROR are emerging; most address barriers at the clinician and family level. LIMITATIONS: This review was limited to published English language papers focusing on ROR. CONCLUSIONS: ROR implementation varies across studies, and many did not assess implementation. Consistent reporting and assessment of ROR implementation could create opportunities to better understand the mechanisms underlying ROR's effects and inform other early childhood interventions that seek to promote optimal development at the population level. Rapid internet penetration and technological advancements have facilitated accessibility to internet-enabled devices globally. Since Asia lacks comprehensive data on internet addiction among college students, this review aims to estimate its pooled prevalence. This was a systematic review and meta-analysis. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and MEDLINE from their inception through August 2022 using terms appropriate to internet addiction and Asian countries/territorial for publications in English peer-reviewed journals. The studies included those done on current college students and provided unambiguous indicators of the threshold of internet addiction. The pooled prevalence was calculated through a random-effects meta-analysis by RStudio software, and I 2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist was used for quality assessment. Overall, between 2007 and 2021, 39 papers comprising 45 effect sizes and totaling 58,058 participants met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of internet addiction among Asian college students was 24.3% (95% confidence interval: 19.8%–29.5%, Q = 6234, df = 44, τ2 = 0.79, I 2 = 99.29%), and strikingly, this percentage increased over time. A high degree of heterogeneity was seen, and no publication bias was found. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive review report on Asian college students, which found that one-fifth suffer from internet addiction. The findings emphasize the significance of multidisciplinary prevention and management strategies to mitigate the harmful effects of internet addiction. Further research is warranted to develop a standardized diagnostic tool for a more precise estimation of internet addiction among this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many nonregulatory interventions targeting children and youth have been implemented at three levels: directed at the individual (e.g., interactive video games), delivered to students at school (e.g., campus bans), and launched in the community (e.g., mass media campaigns). This systematic review aims to synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at preventing e-cigarette initiation among children and youth. MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, APA PsycINFO, and Web of Science Core Collection were searched for papers published between January 1, 2004 and September 1, 2022 that reported more than one outcome on vaping prevention among individuals aged less than 21-years-old: vaping prevalence/incidence, initiation intentions, knowledge/attitudes, and other tobacco product use prevalence/initiation intentions. Interventions were at the individual, school, or community level. The risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I and RoB 1. Thirty-nine publications met the eligibility criteria. Fourteen individually-based (4 parental monitoring, 3 video games, 2 text messages, 3 graphic message themes, 2 healthcare), 19 school-based (14 educational and skill interventions, 5 vape-free policies/bans), and 6 community-based (3 social media, 3 mass media campaigns) interventions were reported. E-cigarette initiation prevention was observed with high perceived parental monitoring; however, the cross-sectional study designs precluded causal claims. There was promising but limited evidence that social-emotional skills curricula and peer leader programming prevented vaping initiation. Despite the growing interest on the Russian-Ukrainian war and its repercussion on the children's health, there is no previous systematic review compiling the current evidence on this topic. This study conducted a rapid systematic review to investigate the current findings concerning the impact of the Ukraine war on the social and health aspects of the Ukrainian pediatric population. A rapid systematic review was conducted. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Virtual Health Library (BVS Spain) were searched between February and April 2023. In addition, high-impact journals and institutions focused on pediatric health and human rights were also consulted. All relevant original articles, letters, editorials, and policy papers assessing the health and social repercussions of the war on Ukrainian children were included. From 134 publications matching the search criteria, 23 were included. These publications were categorized into three distinct domains: 'Public health challenges for the physical and mental health of children and adolescents', 'Lack of Healthcare resources and initiatives to mitigate suffering', and 'Policies, Government, and Children's rights'. Our findings revealed that the war is seriously impacting the life and the health of Ukrainian children, resulting in worse physical and mental health outcomes and perpetrating a deprived situation. To overcome such problems, several initiatives have been proposed by European and non-European countries, relying mostly on receiving refugees, providing mental health support, complementing lack of resources, and establishing policies to improve health care. It could help health professionals, policy makers, and governments to plan preventive, promotive, and therapeutic strategies for Ukrainian children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To systematically evaluate health literacy (HL) interventions in chronic conditions by exploring theoretical perspectives, intervention content and effectiveness.Method: We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane, CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC, Web of Science and PsycINFO. Standardised systematic review methods were used, and sequences informing our research question were extracted and analysed. The study includes a descriptive summary of the included papers.Results: We included 39 unique interventions, with diabetes and heart disease as the most targeted chronic conditions. Fifty-four percent of papers included a definition of HL, but the studies showed significant heterogeneity of theoretical underpinnings, modes, measures and content. We identified 23 HL measures, mostly assessing functional HL. The HL interventions were often more complex than the measures indicated. A significant change in HL was found in 28 studies. Study quality was generally poor.Conclusions: Interventions optimizing HL appear important to improve health outcomes in chronic conditions. To ensure cumulative knowledge development of this field we need theory-based interventions, consistency in methods and more tailored and comprehensive measures to capture the interventions' complexity.Practice Implications: A more valid understanding of HL interventions and measurements is needed to reach an agreed understanding of their components and intentions. Missing outcome data is common in trials, and robust methods to address this are needed. Most trial reports currently use methods applicable under a missing completely at random assumption (MCAR), although this strong assumption can often be inappropriate. To identify and summarise current literature on the analytical methods for handling missing outcome data in randomised controlled trials (RCTs), emphasising methods appropriate for data missing at random (MAR) or missing not at random (MNAR). We conducted a methodological scoping review and identified papers through searching four databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, and CINAHL) from January 2015 to March 2023. We also performed forward and backward citation searching. Eligible papers discussed methods or frameworks for handling missing outcome data in RCTs or simulation studies with an RCT design. From 1878 records screened, our search identified 101 eligible papers. 90 (89%) papers described specific methods for addressing missing outcome data and 11 (11%) described frameworks for overall methodological approach. Of the 90 methods papers, 30 (33%) described methods under the MAR assumption, 48 (53%) explored methods under the MNAR assumption and 11 (12%) discussed methods under a hybrid of MAR and MNAR assumptions. Control-based methods under the MNAR assumption were the most common method explored, followed by multiple imputation under the MAR assumption. This review provides guidance on available analytic approaches for handling missing outcome data, particularly under the MNAR assumption. Discussions between health professionals and nursing home (NH) residents or their families about the current or future goals of health care may be associated with better outcomes at the end of life (EOL), such as avoidance of unwanted interventions or death in hospital. The timing of these discussions varies, and it is possible that their influence on EOL outcomes depends on their timing. This study synthesized current evidence concerning the timing of goals of care (GOC) discussions in NHs and its impact on EOL outcomes. Systematic review. Adult populations in NH settings. This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health from January 2000 to September 2022. We included studies that examined timing of GOC discussions in NHs, were peer-reviewed, and published in English. Quality of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Screening of 1930 abstracts yielded 149 papers that were evaluated for eligibility. Of the 18 articles, representing 16 distinct studies that met review criteria, 12 evaluated the timing of advance directives. There was variation in the timing of GOC discussions and compared with discussions that occurred within a month of death, earlier discussions (eg, at the time of facility admission) were associated with lower rates of hospitalization at the EOL and lower health care costs. The timing of GOC discussions in NHs varies and evidence suggests that late discussions are associated with poorer EOL outcomes. The benefits of goal-concordant care may be enhanced by earlier and more frequent discussions. Future studies should examine the optimal timing for GOC discussions in the NH population. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of community case management (CCM) and validity of its implementation in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region; (2) identify potential differences in pneumonia disease aetiology, geographic region and cultural factors that may impact the implementation and delivery of community-based interventions; and (3) identify strategies that public health practitioners, stakeholders and policymakers could use to implement CCM. This was a systematic review. Comprehensive searches were conducted in Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CINAHL and Scopus databases from 2012 to 2023. Google Scholar, World Health Organization/United Nations Children's Fund websites, unpublished grey literature, PROSPERO (International Register of Systematic Reviews) and a manual search of references lists for relevant articles. A total of 441 articles were screened, and eight articles were included for the review. Studies were from seven countries in SSA located in three regions: East (Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia), West (Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone) and South (South Africa). The study designs of articles included two cluster randomised control trials, four cohorts and two case-control studies. A cross-analysis of the papers identified themes under the subheadings CCM and causal factors and risk factors. Successful impact of implementation and adoption of CCM in the context of SSA culture and environment can be achieved when focused on creating high-demand, dependable and quality healthcare services. Continual monitoring and evaluation of emerging high trends of viral pathogens and co-infections are critical in reducing childhood pneumonia mortalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is an updated systematic review with meta-analysis that compared supervised exercise therapy (SET) vs non-supervised exercise therapy (NSET) programs for patients with distal radius fracture. The purpose of this systematic review is to appraise the current literature to determine if SET program is more effective than a NSET program for pain relief, improvement of range of movement, function and grip strength, both in the short or medium term for patients following distal radius fractures. Systematic review. The following electronic databases were searched: Medline/Pubmed, PEDro, Cinahl, Embase, CENTRAL, and Lilacs. PICOT strategy was used for trial selection. The searches were conducted on August 22, 2021, and May 26, 2022. Two researchers performed an independent search for papers from the references of the chosen trials. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) was used for assessing the quality of evidence. The search strategy identified 2786 potentially eligible studies and 15 studies met our inclusion criteria. The results did not show that the SET program was more effective than the NSET program for all outcomes, in both terms for patients after distal radius fractures. GRADE showed that all analyses presented very low-quality evidence. Even the results showing there was no difference between the two programs analyzed, the available evidence for randomized controlled trials was insufficient to support these results. • The trials selected have very low methodological quality. • It was not possible to conclude that there is no difference between the programs. • Future clinical trials are needed to conclude the effectiveness of the programs. • The non-supervised programs used very different methods. • Instructions, videos, booklets and advice were used as methods. Objective: To investigate the barriers and facilitators to and support needed for e-cigarette cessation.Methods: We systematically searched the subject-specific databases MEDLINE, CINAHL complete and psycINFO and the Cochrane database using synonyms relating to the terms e-cigarettes and cessation including English language, empirical, peer reviewed research papers, published from 2010 to 2021. We included papers that addressed the research question in its broadest sense, including papers reporting reasons for and interventions to support e-cigarette cessation. Data extraction was completed two authors independently using a bespoke spreadsheet. We conducted a narrative synthesis of all data and we were able to extract and combine descriptive quantitative data from included survey papers.Results: After reviewing 2593 titles 10 papers fit our criteria. Barriers to e-cigarette cessation were: a fear of returning to tobacco, dependency and stress reduction. Barriers or facilitators were: health and hazard beliefs, degree of enjoyment, social influences and environmental factors. A number of e-cigarette smoking support measures were suggested by participants.Practice Implications: E-cigarette cessation poses similar and additional challenges to that of tobacco cessation. E-cigarettes are not the final step on a journey to smoking cessation. Addressing barriers specific to e-cigarettes need to be considered in intervention design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The impact of Minority Stress (MS) upon suicidal ideation and behaviours amongst Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) adults is not sufficiently understood, hence our intervention efforts on an individual and societal level are limited. This review aims to evaluate recent literature that reports on the association between MS and suicidal ideation and behaviours amongst TGNC adults.Methods: PsycINFO, Web of Science, MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMBASE were systematically searched for relevant articles. Peer reviewed and grey literature were considered. Included papers reported quantitative analyses on associations between MS factors and suicidal ideation and behaviours amongst TGNC adults. The quality of papers was assessed.Results: 28 papers were identified as eligible. Findings suggested positive associations between external and internal minority stressors and suicidal ideation and behaviour. Dysfunctional individual coping was associated with a greater likelihood of suicide attempts. Community resilience was negatively associated with suicidal outcomes, but did not consistently buffer the effects of minority stress.Limitations: Overall quality of included papers was 'poor'. Almost all papers were cross-sectional by design, therefore causality cannot be inferred. Many papers measured variables using non-standardised measures undermining the reliability and validity of reported results.Conclusions: Findings offer support to the application of MS theory to the understanding of suicidal ideation and behaviour amongst TGNC. Future research should use standardised measures and longitudinal designs to better support the investigation of directionality and causality. Background: Although many mental health disorders first emerge during early childhood or adolescence, there is a significant gap between demand and availability of mental health resources, leading to long waitlists for services. Objective: The objective of this scoping review was to identify and characterize the research literature related to the range of waitlist management strategies that have been implemented in outpatient child and adolescent mental health care. Methods: Electronic databases reviewed included: Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), PubMed, PsychINFO, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and ISI Web of Science. Grey literature databases included: OpenGrey, Conference Papers Index, and Proquest Digital Dissertations. Articles were screened by two reviewers in two steps: first by title and abstract, then full text level. Data were extracted using an a-priori developed data extraction framework, which was piloted and modified iteratively. Results: A total of 119 papers related to waitlist interventions in child and adolescent mental health were reviewed. Of these 119 papers, 11% were reviews, summary, or theoretical papers; 8% used a randomized control trial design and 2.5% were trial protocols. Most studies used less rigorous designs, such as uncontrolled before-and- after designs. The large majority focused on just one waitlist strategy each. The most commonly used approaches included: prioritization/triage and initial assessment; brief consultation and advice or brief therapy approaches; group-based models; interim services; increasing capacity; and strategies to decrease non-attendance. Most studies were conducted in the United Kingdom or Canada. Discussion: While mental health systems are complex, most studies examining waitlist initiatives explored the implementation of single initiatives. It is unlikely that a single waitlist strategy can be effective in managing wait times for children's mental health. Substance use is common in patients with cancer. Caring for patients with co-occurring cancer and substance use disorder (SUD) is complex. The detrimental effects of stigma on people with SUD are far-reaching; impacting on the quality of care and inter-personal relationships, reducing quality of life. Despite this, most healthcare professionals (HCP) know little about how to avoid stigmatizing interactions with patients. The purpose of this integrative literature review was to summarize what is known about substance use by patients with cancer and present the consequences of SUD stigma for oncology patients. In addition, to highlight approaches to reduce HCP stigma. This literature review was designed using the PRISMA guidelines for integrative reviews. Google Scholar, PubMed and CINAHL Ultimate were used to search for related key terms. Inclusion criteria were; published after 2013, written in English, full text available. The initial search was augmented by crosschecking the references section of relevant articles. Eligible papers were then subjected to the Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment. Ninety unique papers were read in full and summarized into the research themes. Prevalence estimates of substance use in patients with cancer range from 2% to 35%, varying by cancer site, type of substance, patient demographics and metrics of substance use. Patients with co-occurring cancer and SUDs have multiple clinical factors that can complicate clinical care including 'chemical coping', delayed diagnosis, compromised treatment adherence, decreased immune function and interaction between illicit substances and cancer drugs. Stigma related to SUD can result in exclusion and marginalization of these individuals. It can lead to social isolation, inequitable access to healthcare and sub-optimal treatment, resulting in poor health outcomes and reduced quality of life. Various educational approaches are recommended to reduce SUD stigma in HCP, but changing HCP language would seem the simplest and most impactful. Perhaps the most powerful tool Radiation Therapists can use to reduce SUD stigma is the choice of language when communicating with patients and other HCPs. Learning from our professional experiences when talking with patients about sexual health, or sexual and gender diversity, the first step to a meaningful conversation is ensuring the patient feels comfortable disclosing their lived experiences and need for support. If we fail to eliminate SUD stigma in our own clinical interactions, then we will be unable to improve wellness in this vulnerable population and promote healthy behaviours in the patients we care for. The present systematic review was aimed at critically summarizing the evidence about treatment-emergent manic/hypomanic and depressive switches during the course of bipolar disorder (BD). A systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycInfo electronic databases was conducted until March 24th, 2021, according to the P referred R eporting I tems for S ystematic Reviews and M eta- A nalyses (PRISMA) statement. Observational studies clearly reporting data regarding the prevalence of treatment-emergent mood switches in patients with BD were considered for inclusion. Thirty-two original studies met the inclusion criteria. In the majority of cases, manic switches were analyzed; only 3 papers investigated depressive switches in type I BD. Treatment-emergent mania/hypomania in BD subjects ranged from 17.3% to 48.8% and was more frequent with antidepressant monotherapy compared to combination treatment with mood stabilizers, especially lithium, or second-generation antipsychotics. A higher likelihood of mood switch has been reported with tricyclics and a lower rate with bupropion. Depressive switches were detected in 5–16% of type I BD subjects and were associated with first-generation antipsychotic use, the concomitant use of first- and second-generation antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines. The included studies presented considerable methodological heterogeneity, small sample sizes and comparability flaws. In conclusion, many studies, although heterogeneous and partly discordant, have been conducted on manic/hypomanic switches, whereas depressive switches during treatment with antipsychotics are poorly investigated. In BD subjects, both antidepressant and antipsychotic medications seems to play a role in the occurrence of mood switches, although the effects of different pharmacological compounds have yet to be fully investigated. Timely recognition of dying is important for high quality end-of-life care however, little is known about how clinicians recognise dying. Late recognition is common and can lead to futile treatment that can prolong or increase suffering and prevent a change in the focus of care. To explore how clinicians caring for dying people recognise that they are in the last days or hours of life, as well as the factors that influence the recognition of dying. A systematically constructed integrative review of the literature. Medline, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycInfo and Allied and Complementary Medicine were searched in July 2022. Papers were included if they were original research, discussed how clinicians recognise dying, available in English language and published in 2012 or later. A constant comparison approach was applied to the analysis and synthesis of the literature. 24 papers met the inclusion criteria. There were 3 main categories identified: 'Clues and signals' refers to prompts and signs that lead a clinician to believe a person is dying, incorporating the sub-categories 'knowing the patient over time', and 'intuition and experience'. 'Recognition by others' is where clinicians come to recognise someone is dying through others. This can be through a change in the context of care such as a tool or care plan or by communication with the team. 'Culture, system and practice' refers to the cultural beliefs of a setting that influences awareness of dying and denial of death as a possibility and avoidance of naming death and dying directly. System and practice of the setting also impact on recognition of dying. This involves work pace and intensity, shift systems and timing of senior reviews of patients. Uncertainty and its impact on recognition of dying are evident throughout the findings of this review. The seeking of certainty and the absence of the possibility of dying contributes to late recognition of dying. Recognition of dying is a complex process that occurs over time, involving a combination of intuition and gathering of information, that is influenced by contextual factors. A culture where dying is not openly acknowledged or even named explicitly contributes to late recognition of dying. A shared language and consistent terminology for explicitly naming dying are needed. To understand the effectiveness of interventions to increase retention of early career nurses, implemented during the pre-registration programme. Retention of nurses is an issue of global concern. The transition period spanning the final year of pre-registration nurse education programmes and the first year of qualified practice is a point of high risk for attrition from the profession. A systematic review without meta-analysis and a thematic synthesis of wider literature, reported using SWiM and ENTREQ guidelines. A convergent segregated approach was used to capture qualitative and quantitative study designs. A systematic review of quantitative papers reporting intervention and retention data and scoping review of a wider body of literature related to interventions supporting transition to qualified practice were conducted. Searches used Medline and CINAHL databases in October 2021. Data extracted from wider literature were inductively collated into themes relating to the intervention type and synthesised. Six papers were included in the systematic review and 27 papers were included in the scoping review. Interventions included internships, externships, clinical immersion programmes, capstone projects, preceptorships and psychological wellbeing programmes. There was a lack of consensus about the benefits of implementing interventions during the final year of pre-registration programmes, but some evidence that interventions incorporating preceptors, expose students to the clinical environment and involve academic/clinical collaboration, report positive outcomes related to transition to qualified practice, which potentially has an impact on motivation to stay in the profession. Greater understanding of interventions supporting student nurses to reduce likelihood of leaving once qualified has been achieved. There is some evidence these interventions lead to increases in retention, but this is limited by the quality of the reporting and the scarcity of data. Consideration should be given to maximizing students' exposure to clinical practice and the benefits that interventions with alternative approaches such as psychological wellbeing programmes may bring. Physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs) are key to the effective delivery of medical care in nursing homes (NHs). Although several studies have reported on the relationship between the care delivered by a given discipline and specific clinical outcomes, the mediating effect of physician practice characteristics is unknown. A scoping review was conducted to determine whether studies examining the impact of NP and PA care in NHs have accounted for both the collaborative relationship between themselves and physicians as well as physician practice size and type. Scoping review. NH and NH residents. Papers eligible for review included peer-reviewed studies written in English and that were quantitative in nature. Inclusion criteria required that more than 1 NH and more than a single NP or PA be included for the analysis. Further, the size of the NH studied must have equaled or exceeded 100 residents and more than 1 clinical outcome reported. Databases searched included Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science; CINAHL, and AgeLine. A total of 1878 studies underwent abstract review of which 1719 were excluded. A full-text review of the remaining articles was completed (n = 157, as 2 articles could not be retrieved), of which 16 met eligibility criteria. The study designs were generally retrospective and quasi-experimental in nature. No randomized controlled studies were identified. Physician practice variables such as number of physicians, total practice case load, case mix, and the nature of the collaborative practice between NP/PA and MD were infrequently specified. In no reports was the type of physician practice characterized and no physician practice variables were adjusted for with regard to outcomes. None of the studies included in the review were found to have incorporated any physician variables into their outcome analyses. Before purporting equivalency between medical provider disciplines in NHs, future studies must, at the very least, consider the mediating effect of physician practice characteristics. Emergency departments (EDs) are often first to feel the intra-hospital effects of disasters. Compromised care standards during disasters eventuate from increased demands on health resources; the facilities, supplies, equipment and manpower imperative for a functioning healthcare facility. Emergency departments must understand the effect of disasters on their health resources. This paper examines the impact on resources within the ED as a result of a disaster and provides a review against the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction's Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 priorities. An integrative literature review design was utilised. Articles were extracted from databases and search engines. The Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis Guidelines for systematic literature reviews were used. Seven papers met inclusion criteria. Disaster consumable stocking was used to mitigate disaster risk and improve resilience. Logistical challenges were exacerbated by poor building design. Ineffective human resource management, communications failure, insufficient ED space, diminished equipment and supplies and unreliable emergency power sources were described. Disaster planning and preparedness strategies can address health resource deficits, increasing ED resilience. Sedentary behaviour research is a relatively new field, much of which has emerged since the widespread acceptance of clinical trial registration. The aim of this study was to investigate the trial registration and related issues in studies investigating the effect of frequent activity interruptions to prolonged sitting-time. Secondary analysis of a scoping review including systematic searches of databases and trial registries. We included experimental studies investigating the effects of frequent activity interruptions to prolonged sitting-time. We identified 32 trials published in 45 papers. Only 16 (50%) trials were registered, with all 16 trials being completed and published. Of the unregistered trials, we identified three (19%) for which similarities in the sample size and participant demographics across papers was suggestive of duplicate publication. Identification of potential duplicate publications was difficult for the remaining 13 (81%). Results from 53 (76%) of the 70 registered outcomes were published, but 11 (69%) registered trials reported results from additional outcomes not prospectively registered. A total of 46 different outcomes (out of 53 reported outcome measures, similar measures were collated) were reported across all trials, 31 (67%) of which were collected in ≤2 trials. We found direct evidence of trial registration issues in experimental trials of breaking up sitting-time. The lack of prospective registration of all trials, and the large number of outcomes measured per trial are key considerations for future research in this field. BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) promotes and supports breastfeeding for low-income women and children. A prior review reported negative associations of WIC with breastfeeding outcomes. WIC food package changes in 2009 increased breastfeeding support. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this systematic review were to 1) evaluate evidence on WIC participation and breastfeeding outcomes and 2) evaluate breastfeeding outcomes of WIC participants before versus after the 2009 food package. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase®, CINAHL, ERIC, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for papers published January 2009 to April 2022. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Included studies compared breastfeeding outcomes (initiation, duration, exclusivity, early introduction of solid foods) of WIC participants with WIC-eligible nonparticipants, or among WIC participants before versus after the 2009 package change. STUDY APPRAISAL METHODS: Two independent reviewers evaluated each study and assessed risk of bias using EHPHP assessment. RESULTS: From 13 observational studies we found: 1) moderate strength of evidence (SOE) of no difference in initiation associated with WIC participation; 2) insufficient evidence regarding WIC participation and breastfeeding duration or exclusivity; 3) low SOE that the 2009 food package change is associated with greater breastfeeding exclusivity; 4) low SOE that WIC breastfeeding support services are positively associated with initiation and duration. LIMITATIONS: Only observational studies, with substantial risk of bias and heterogeneity in outcomes and exposures. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF KEY FINDINGS: WIC participation is not associated with a difference in breastfeeding initiation compared to WIC-eligible nonparticipants, but the 2009 food package change may have improved breastfeeding exclusivity among WIC participants and receipt of breastfeeding support services may have improved breastfeeding initiation and duration. Volunteers in palliative care settings are an essential part of care provision for patients and those important to them. Effective collaboration between volunteers and paid staff has been regarded as an important element of successful working, however, at times failures in coordination, information sharing and tensions within teams have been highlighted. To explore the views expressed by volunteers and paid staff about their experiences of working together in palliative care settings. A systematic exploration of qualitative research using a meta-ethnographic approach. PsycINFO, CINAHL, Medline Complete, and AMED databases were searched from inception to December 2021 for the concepts "volunteers" and "palliative care." Repeated in-depth reading and appraisal of papers identified metaphors and concepts, providing new interpretations. Included papers (n = 14) enabled the construction of five storylines: 1) " we are the cake, and they are the cream ": understanding the volunteer role—separate, but part of a whole. 2) "... we don't know what's wrong with people but sometimes we need to know ": access to information and importance of trust. 3) " everybody looks out for each other ": access to paid staff and their support. 4) "...we don't meddle in the medical ": boundaries. 5) "it's the small things that the staff does for me that makes me feel good about my work ": sense of value and significance. For effective working relationships between paid staff and volunteers, proactive engagement, recognition of each other's role and contribution, mutual sharing of information, and intentional interaction between both groups is needed. Intuitive eating interventions aim to improve individual health and promote sustainable changes to one's relationship with food. However, there is no evidence-based consensus on the impact of intuitive eating interventions on diet quality. This systematic review aimed to investigate intuitive eating interventions and their impact on diet quality. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Cochrane databases were systematically searched to October 2021 for studies reporting interventions that encompassed the principles of intuitive eating and measured diet quality. Other health outcomes were used for secondary analysis. Findings were synthesized narratively. Seventeen papers reporting 14 intervention studies (n = 3,960) were included in the review. All studies found a positive or neutral effect on diet quality following an intuitive eating intervention. A favorable change in eating behavior following these interventions was also observed. Intuitive eating promotes an attunement to the body, which aids in improving diet quality because of increased awareness of physiological cues. The reduction of emotional and binge eating may also increase diet quality. Findings from the current review suggest that intuitive eating interventions are most effective face-to-face, in a group setting, and sustained for at least 3 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are at risk of long-term comorbidities. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and physical and psychological impairments in ARDS survivors from 3 months to 5 yr follow-up after ICU discharge.Methods: Systematic search of PubMed, AMED, BNI, and CINAHL databases from January 2000 to date. The primary outcome was HRQoL. Secondary outcomes included physical, pulmonary, and cognitive function, mental health, and return to work. A secondary analysis compared classical ARDS with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease-2 (SARS-CoV-2) ARDS.Results: Forty-eight papers met inclusion criteria including 11 693 patients; of those 85% (n=9992) had classical ARDS and 14% (n=1632) had SARS-CoV-2 ARDS. The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) physical component summary score mean (95% confidence interval [CI]) was 46 (41-50) at 3 months, 39 (36-41) at 6 months, and 40 (38-43) at 12 months. The SF-36 mental component summary mean score was 53 (48-57) at 3 months, 45 (40-50) at 6 months, and 44 (42-47) at 12 months. SF-36 values were lower than those found in the normal population up to 5 yr. The predictive distance walked in 6 min was 57% (45-69), 63% (56-69), and 66% (62-70) at 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively. Classical ARDS and SARS-CoV-2 ARDS showed no difference in HRQoL and physical function; however, patients with classical ARDS had higher incidence of anxiety and depression (P<0.001).Conclusion: ARDS survivors can experience reduced HRQoL and physical and mental health impairment. • Families of people entering and living in residential aged care settings have complex and dynamic bereavement care needs, and there is paucity of evidence-based bereavement support intervention, specifically focussed on this population. • The quality of care provided to an older person at the end of their life and after death care can influence family caregivers' grief reactions. • The aged care workforce should consider the complexities involved in decision-making strategies that support death preparedness and bereavement support as a part of care planning and provision. • There is a need for government agencies and research entities to work together in developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to grief, loss, and bereavement care, focussing on the residential aged care sector. The grief, loss and bereavement needs of the families of those living and dying in residential aged care setting is not very well understood. This systematic review examines grief, loss, and bereavement experience of, and interventions relating to, family caregivers of those entering, living and dying in residential aged care. Out of 2023 papers that were identified, 35 met the inclusion criteria which included (n=28) qualitative and (n=7) quantitative intervention studies. The qualitative findings indicated quality of care provided to the resident at the end of their life, and after death care influenced family caregivers' grief reactions. The intervention studies revealed that educational interventions have the potential to lead to some benefits in the context of grief loss and bereavement outcomes. Recognizing the emotional experiences and support needs of families and carers may enhance the understanding of the ageing, caring, dying, grieving pathway for older people and their families. To characterize mouth-opening muscular performance (MOMP) in adults and elderly individuals with dysphagia and healthy controls. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from inception to Jan. 26, 2023. Two independent researchers considered the titles, abstracts, and full texts of potentially eligible papers from 1451 search results. Twenty-five studies that evaluated mouth-opening maximal strength (MOMS) in healthy adults, elderly individuals, and patients with dysphagia met the inclusion criteria. We found comparable, reliable values with significant sex differences in maximal mouth opening strength (MMOS) in the meta-analysis for healthy elderly patients (females 5.31 ± 0.47 kg vs. males 7.04 ± 0.70 kg; mean difference of 0.84 kg). Age has also emerged as an essential factor in reducing strength. There was a significant reduction in the MMOS score in the only study that compared dysphagic individuals to healthy elderly individuals. In another study, the MMOS score was comparable to the meta-analysis of healthy elderly individuals. Both sex and age play significant roles in the MMOS. This scoping review aimed to explore the interprofessional curriculum content and teaching approaches specific to wound care education in baccalaureate health courses internationally. Interprofessional education is defined as occurring when future health practitioners learn with, from and about each other with the goal of improving health outcomes. The management of wounds is a global public health issue with the World Health Organization recognising wound care is best managed by an interprofessional team. The preparedness of health professional graduates to engage in interprofessional education is essential to design and deliver coordinated health services that are person-centred and improve health outcomes. There is a lack of evidence however about how to prepare baccalaureate students in an interprofessional context, specifically in wound care. A scoping review was conducted using the framework of Arksey and O'Malley and reported using the PRISMA checklist for scoping reviews. A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted in MEDLINE (via EBSCOhost), CINAHL PLUS (via EBSCOhost), Pubmed and Embase databases published between 2012 and October 2023. Reference lists of included studies were also searched. Studies which were peer reviewed, written in English with a focus on interprofessional education in wound care were included in the review. The process of reviewing titles and abstracts was conducted by two independent reviewers. Data were extracted, key characteristics mapped and a narrative analysis of findings was reported. Three studies were included in this review. All the reviewed papers reported collaborative learning activities between different health professional groups relating to wound care, although there was no consistent approach to what wound care content was delivered or how it was delivered. Only one study reported that the delivery of content was completed by staff from multiple professional groups. Evaluation of the included studies related to either the effectiveness of the interprofessional education or wound care rather than both concepts. Due to the limited number of studies included in this review, it was difficult to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of interprofessional approaches to wound care. It may be possible that interprofessional wound care is currently being undertaken but not formally evaluated. This itself is problematic. It is imperative to equip healthcare students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe, effective interprofessional care. To systematically search for, appraise, and synthesize peer-reviewed literature on interpersonal coping (IC) in sport. A systematic review adhering to PRISMA-P guidelines. Systematic searches of CINAHL, PsycArticles, APA PsycInfo, and SPORTDiscus were conducted. To be eligible for inclusion, papers had to be published in full in the English language in a peer-reviewed journal and had to contain empirical data that focused on IC among individuals in sport (i.e., athletes, coaches, sport parents, practitioners). The final sample consisted of 28 studies (22 qualitative, five quantitative, one mixed methods) spanning from September 01, 1981 to July 10, 2023. The results highlight eight antecedents and facilitators of IC (closeness, commitment, communication, complementarity, cultural values, environment and situations, sharing of demands, support), three mediators and moderators of IC (appraisal of own and others' emotions and or coping, gender, individuals within the relationship), and three outcomes of IC (performance, relationships, regulation or management of emotions). The findings were used to develop the first working definition of IC in sport. A volte-face of thought is needed to shift attention toward the interpersonal manifestation of coping. IC has wide-reaching implications for individuals, relationships, and other psychological constructs. Methodological innovation is needed to realize stepwise changes in intellectual and practical progress and to develop quantitative measures of IC. Coaches, family members, practitioners, and retired athletes are considerably underrepresented in research on IC. Clinicians responding to disasters are at risk of experiencing psychosocial problems that can negatively impact them during, upon their return and years after the deployment. Clinicians often respond to disasters as members of organised Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs). The aim of this paper was to review and synthesise the literature regarding psychosocial problems and support provided to medical personnel in the preparedness, response, and recovery phases of a disaster. A comprehensive search for literature was conducted using four databases: EMBASE; CINAHL; MEDLINE; and PsychInfo. Medical Subject Heading and key terms used in the search included: Disasters; First Responder; Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT); Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Psychosocial problems were identified amongst DMAT members in all phases (preparedness, response and recovery) of disaster assistance. These ranged from pre-existing stress and anxiety to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Psychosocial support was mostly reported in the recovery phase of the disaster deployment. A range of strategies exist to support psychosocial problems DMAT members experience, however, these tend to focus on the recovery phase of deployment with limited focus on preparedness and response phases. Further research is required to identify, implement, and evaluate short and long term psychosocial support needs and strategies for DMAT members in all phases of a disaster deployment. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of clinical trials on the effect of nonpharmaceutical treatments on outcomes for multiple sclerosis (MS). The CINAHL, Mantis, Medline, PEDro, PubMed, and Scopus databases were searched. Final papers meeting inclusion criteria were scored with the Physiotherapy Evidence Database for quality and included in a meta-analysis. Forty papers in the meta-analysis totaled 1673 participants. The interventions were grouped into 6 subcategories: physical activity, technology, rehabilitation, alternative, resistance training, and psychological. The combined effect of interventions produced a large overall effect size for the outcome fatigue; medium effect sizes for functionality, balance, and quality of life; and no effect on pain or spasticity. Physical activity had the greatest effect, improving fatigue, function, and balance. Rehabilitation and resistance training had a large effect on functionality. Comparatively, psychological approaches had only a small effect on improving quality of life. Sample sizes of included papers tended to be small with large variability in design. Therefore, results should be interpreted cautiously. Our results suggest there may be effective nonpharmaceutical treatment options available that can improve the symptoms of fatigue, poor functionality, balance, and quality of life. The ageing population and growing burden of chronic disease has increased demands for primary health care services, necessitating growth of this nursing workforce. Studies have explored strategies in retaining nurses, employment conditions in primary health care, and transitioning of acute care nurses to primary health care employment. Few studies have explored how undergraduate nursing students perceive and are prepared to work in this sector. This review synthesises evidence on the impact of undergraduate curriculum on nursing students' attitudes, perceptions and preparedness to work in primary health care. An integrative literature review guided the synthesis of evidence. Scopus, ScienceDirect, CINAHL and MEDLINE were searched for relevant studies published between 2008 and 2018. 491 studies were identified from the database searches. Following the removal of duplicates, review of abstracts and keywords against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 39 papers were subjected to full-text review. Twelve papers, including one thesis, met the inclusion criteria. Using an appraisal system, no paper was excluded based on methodological quality. Three themes were identified, namely: impact of curricula; knowledge and attitudes to primary health care; and students' intention to work in primary health care. The preparation of undergraduate nursing students to work in this area is inconsistent as curricula remain acute-care focussed. Negative perceptions about the primary health care nursing role impact intentions of nursing students to work in primary health care. This review highlights a need to implement strategies to improve the understanding of undergraduate nurses around the primary health care nursing role. In particular, providing students with skills, knowledge and an understanding of working in this area through curriculum content and structure may provide undergraduates with the desire and confidence to seek employment in primary health care following graduation. Globally there are mounting concerns about nurses' job satisfaction because of its pivotal role in nurse turnover and the quality of care of patients. To identify a more comprehensive and extensive knowledge of the job satisfaction of qualified general nurses working in acute care hospitals and its associated factors drawing upon empirical literature published in the last five years. Literature review. A comprehensive electronic database search was conducted in PubMed (2012–2017), Web of Science (2012–2017), CINAHL (2012–2017), Embase (2012–2017), PsycINFO (2012–2017) and the Applied Social Sciences Index (2012–2017), CNKI (2012–2017), WanFang (2012–2017), SinoMed (2012–2017) and VIP (2012–2017) to retrieve relevant articles published in both English and Chinese between January 2012 and October 2017. Key terms and phrases associated with job satisfaction, occupational stress, professional commitment, role conflict and role ambiguity were utilized in the subject search in combination with nurses following guidelines for searching the OVID interface. The abstracts or full texts of research papers were reviewed prior to their inclusion in the review according to inclusion criteria and quality assessment using the Strobe guidelines. A total of 59 papers were included in this review. The impact of job satisfaction upon sickness absence, turnover intention, as well as the influencing factors of job satisfaction such as working shift and leadership, job performance, organizational commitment, effort and reward style has been identified in a number of research studies yielding equivocal findings. Job satisfaction of hospital nurses is closely related to work environment, structural empowerment, organizational commitment, professional commitment, job stress, patient satisfaction, patient-nurse ratios, social capital, evidence-based practice and ethnic background. Various mediating or moderating pathways have been identified with nurses' job satisfaction being mediated by various factors. It is vital to increase nurses' job satisfaction because this has the potential both to improve patients' perceptions of care quality and ensure an adequate nursing workforce. The indirect relationships and predictors of job satisfaction contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the complex phenomenon of job satisfaction, which in turn may aid the development of effective strategies to address the nursing shortage and increase the quality of patient care. To review the current evidence on the relationship between specialty nurse certification and outcomes. A structured and comprehensive systematic review was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute framework to include both published research studies and expert opinion papers. Four electronic databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, and PsychINFO were searched between 2000 and 2018. The search for expert opinion papers included nursing organizations, OaLster, Grey Literature Report, and The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators. The records generated through the search were exported to EndNote X8 and duplicates were removed. Title and abstracts of the records were screened by three reviewers for eligibility using the selection criteria. In the absence of an abstract, records were retained for full text review. Full text assessment of each paper was conducted by two reviewers with a third referee, if necessary, to review any discrepancies. In the case of multiple articles drawing on one set of primary data, only one article was included. A review of each article was completed using the JBI Quality Appraisal checklists to assess internal and external reliability and validity. Both quality appraisal and data extraction were conducted by the review team independently and were validated by one other member of the team. Discrepancies were resolved through rigorous discussion between the reviewers. Forty one original research studies were included in the final analysis of the literature. The findings from the included articles were synthesized into three major categories and subsequent sub-categories: Patient outcomes, nurse outcomes and organizational outcomes. Twenty seven findings contributed to the sub-category of specialty nurse certification and patient outcomes. Patient outcomes were further classified into nurse sensitive outcomes, patient mortality and patient satisfaction. Fifty-four findings related to nurse outcomes with the sub-categories: personal and professional factors, knowledge and skills, organizational commitment, job satisfaction, empowerment and confidence. Six findings related to organizational benefits: including the sub-categories of nursing turnover and vacancy rates, perception of healthcare, and costs to the organization. The current model risks driving further proliferation of specialty certifications and certifying organizations without questioning the assumptions underlying the goals of certification. Background: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the effects of women-focused cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on patient outcomes and cost.Methods: Medline, PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus and Emcare were searched for articles from inception through to May 2020. Primary studies of any design were included, with adult females with any cardiac diseases. "Women-focused" CR comprised programs or sessions with >50% females, or 1-1 programming tailored to women's preferences. No studies were excluded on the basis of outcome. Two independent reviewers rated citations for potential inclusion, and one extracted data, including on quality, which was checked independently. Random-effects meta-analysis was used where there were ≥3 trials with the same outcome; certainty of evidence for these was determined based on GRADE. For other outcomes, SWiM was applied.Results: 3498 unique citations were identified, of which 28 studies (52 papers) were included (3,697 participants; 11 trials). No meta-analysis could be performed for outcomes with "usual care" comparisons. Compared to "active comparison" group, women-focused CR had no meaningful additional effect on functional capacity. Women-focused CR meaningfully improved physical (mean difference [MD]=6.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]=3.14-9.59; I2=0%; moderate-quality evidence) and mental (MD=4.66, 95% CI=0.21-9.11; I2=36%; low-quality evidence) quality of life, as well as scores on seven of the eight SF-36 domains. Qualitatively, results showed women-focused CR was associated with lower morbidity, risk factors, and greater psychosocial well-being. No effect was observed for mortality. One study reported a favorable economic impact and another reported reduced sick days.Conclusions: Women-focused CR is associated with clinical benefit, although there is mixed evidence and more research is needed.Prospero Registration: CRD42020189760. Objectives: Systematically review parental perceptions of shared decision-making (SDM) in neonatology, identifying barriers and facilitators to implementation.Methods: Electronic database (Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Scopus) and follow-up searches were conducted to identify qualitative studies. Data were extracted, thematically analysed and synthesised.Results: Searches yielded 2445 papers, of which 25 were included. Thematic analysis identified six key themes. Key barriers included emotional crises experienced in the NICU setting, lack of medical information provided to parents to inform decision-making, inadequate communication of information, poor relationships with caregivers, lack of continuity in care, and perceived power imbalances between HCPs and parents. Key facilitators included clear, honest and compassionate communication of medical information, caring and empathetic caregivers, continuity in care, and tailored approaches that reflected parent's desired level of involvement.Conclusion: The highly specialised environment, and the emotional crises experienced by parents impact significantly on their perceived capacity to engage in surrogate decision-making.Practice Implications: Complex and multi-factorial interventions that address the training needs of HCPs, and the emotional, informational and decision support needs of parents are needed. • Research into scar massage following surgery is heterogenous in nature. • Scar massage may improve scar characteristics, reduce pain and increase movement. • There is a lack of consistency in how scar massage is implemented and evaluated. • There is a need for further research to substantiate its use in clinical settings. Scar massage is a widely used treatment modality in hand therapy. This intervention is thoroughly discussed in the literature relating to burns rehabilitation, however, the evidence for its use in treating linear scars following surgery is limited. To collate the empirical literature on scar massage for the treatment of postsurgical cutaneous scars. Scoping review. Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, AMED, Scopus, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, and the Joanna Briggs Institute were searched from inception to December 2020. Two researchers used a data extraction tool to record key demographic, intervention and outcome data, and to apply the Oxford Levels of Evidence for each study. Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria, reporting on a combined sample of 1515 participants. Only two papers addressed hand or wrist scars (92 participants). While all studies reported favorable outcomes for scar massage, there were 45 different outcome measures used and a propensity towards non-standardized assessment. Intervention protocols varied from a single session to three treatments daily for 6 months. The results from 13 studies were confounded by the implementation of additional rehabilitation interventions. The overall findings suggest that while there may be benefits to scar massage in reducing pain, increasing movement and improving scar characteristics; there is a lack of consistent research methods, intervention protocols and outcome measures. This scoping review highlights the heterogenous nature of research into scar massage following surgery and supports the need for further research to substantiate its use in the clinical setting. Objectives: To establish the most effective securing devices and techniques for preventing nasogastric tube displacement or inadvertent extubation, mucosa and skin lesions, discomfort, and complications (ab ingestis pneumonia, reduced caloric intake, mortality) in adult patients. Design: Systematic review of published and unpublished reports in any language, identified by searching 5 electronic databases, websites, reference lists, and existing systematic reviews and papers identified by experts in the field. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies: Systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials, and comparative studies that compared ≥2 techniques or devices to secure nasogastric tubes in patients 18 years old or older. Results: Five studies (of which two were randomised controlled trials) were included. Four studies reported on bridle versus the tape technique (unbridled). The studies' population was comprised of mostly Intensive Care Unit patients. Four studies measured unintentional dislodgement or removal and found a statistically significant advantage in favour of the bridle. Three studies measured time until failure: two studies compared the bridle versus tape technique whereas the other compared different types of tape. One study did not find any significant difference between the two groups of patients whereas the second demonstrated a significantly longer time until failure in the bridled patients. Three studies comparing bridled and unbridled patients measured adverse events such as external nasal ulceration, epistaxis and sinusitis, and there was no agreement between their results. One study measured caloric intake and found that bridled patients received a higher percentage of their caloric goal than unbridled patients. Only one study analysed the cost-effectiveness of the bridle versus the tape technique and found a cost saving by implementing routine bridling of nasoenteric feeding tubes. Discomfort was not measured in the included studies. Conclusions: Despite the large number of patients receiving this intervention, there is insufficient evidence to suggest one securing technique or device over another. Data are lacking on the beneficial effects of the various methods or systems. There is little or no statistically significant evidence regarding bridling of nasogastric tubes but more research is needed. Abstract Housing is an important social determinant of health and a key element of refugee integration into countries of resettlement. However, the way in which housing may affect mental and physical health for refugees and asylum seekers has not been systematically examined. This systematic review aimed to explore the effects of housing on health and wellbeing for this population, in order to identify key pathways for public health interventions. The review was undertaken following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) guidelines. We identified publications through a search of Medline, PsychInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, Cohrane Library, Google, ProQuest, OpenGrey, MedNar and WHOLIS. Eligibility criteria included: publication in English between 1997 and 2017, with findings pertaining to the relationship between housing and health for refugees and/or asylum seekers. Out of 2371 items, 25 papers were included with a further five identified through reference lists. Eleven of the papers explored housing and health for those refugees and asylum seekers living within refugee camps, with 19 focusing on countries of resettlement. All studies identified housing issues for refugees and asylum seekers, with physical housing conditions particularly poor in refugee camps, and issues of affordability, suitability, insecure tenure and mobility as well as difficulties securing housing also highlighted in countries of resettlement. Consistent relationships were found between physical aspects of housing and physical and mental health, with other aspects of housing such as safety and overcrowding linked to mental health. There were a number of methodological issues with most of the studies, making it difficult to specify precise pathways. However, improvements to housing quality particularly in refugee camps, and targeted housing interventions more generally for refugees and asylum seekers would likely have an important public health benefit. Aims Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is a multidisciplinary diagnostic process that evaluates medical, psychological, social and functional capacity. No systematic review of the use of CGA in radiation oncology has been conducted. This paper reviews the use of CGA in radiation oncology, examines whether such assessments are feasible and evaluates the effectiveness of these assessments in predicting and modifying outcomes. Materials and methods We searched Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library for articles published between 1 January 1996 and 24 January 2017. Results Twelve non-randomised studies were identified; four studies used a geriatric screening tool only and the eight other studies combined a screening tool with a CGA. Most studies had small samples (mean 63 participants). Two studies identified a significant (95% confidence interval 1.5–4.8 and 1.5–6.9) association between an abnormal screening and increased risk of mortality. One study showed an ability of the CGA to influence treatment decision making, whereas six papers suggested a non-significant association between the screening tool/CGA and treatment tolerance. Conclusion The studies suggest the feasibility of using a screening tool to select patients for CGA. ‘Vulnerability’ showed a non-statistically significant association with treatment tolerance, but a significant association with mortality. Background Dehydration in the older people is a prevalent problem that is often associated with physiological changes, physical limitations and environmental conditions. Objectives The scoping review was carried out to identify risk factors associated with dehydration in older people living in nursing homes. Design The revised scoping methodology framework of Arksey and O’Malley (2005) was applied. Study selection was carried out in accordance with Davis et al. (2009) and focused on the inclusion criteria (people over 65 years old and living in nursing homes). Risk factors were classified using the geriatric assessment. Data sources An electronic database search was performed in PubMed, Scopus and CINAHL. The literature search was carried out between October 2016 and January 2017. Review methods Thematic reporting was performed and study findings were validated through interdisciplinary meetings of experts. The quality of the papers consulted was also evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale adapted for cross-sectional, cohort and case-control studies. Results In all, 16 papers were analysed, all of which were observational studies. The risk of bias ranged from very low (n = 1), to medium (n = 13) and high (n = 2). The risk factors were classified in line with the different components of the geriatric assessment. In the socio-demographic characteristics age and gender were identified. In the clinical component, infections, renal and cardiovascular diseases and end-of-life situations were the most common factors highlighted in the papers analysed. With reference to the functional component, its limitation was associated with dehydration, while for factors of mental origin, it was related to dementia and behavioural disorders. Finally, the factors relating to the social component were institutionalisation, requiring a skilled level of care and it being winter. Conclusions The most commonly repeated factors highlighted in the review were age, gender, infections, end of life and dementia, with it being important to highlight the large number of factors in the clinical component. Objectives Analyze and synthesize the research evidence to understand the reproductive decisions made by women living with HIV from the beginning of the epidemic to the present. Evaluate the barriers and the facilitators for reproductive decision-making. Identify areas of strength, improvement, and those requiring further research. Design and data sources Systematic review following the PRISMA guideline. PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, SocINDEX, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched from 1985 to 2016 using the following Keywords: HIV, AIDS, pregnancy, reproduction, and decision-making. Study selection A total of 42 research papers were included in this review. Initially, 1563 papers were identified for the review by database (n = 1544) and hand (n = 19) searches. With three review levels, 1521 papers were excluded (title review, n = 1272; abstract review, n = 136; and full paper review, n = 113). Studies published in English in peer-reviewed journals using both quantitative and qualitative methods and addressing reproductive decisions in women living with HIV were included. Thirdly, inclusion eligibility was assessed by title, abstract, and full text. Review methods Random allocation conducted by the primary researcher assigned an equal number of papers to each researcher for review, including detailed instructions with an abstraction form. Discrepancies were resolved by two researchers. Research quality was assessed using the NCHBL Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies, the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme for the qualitative studies and its version for systematic reviews Results The review included 42 papers, both quantitative (n = 24) and qualitative methods (n = 14). Most studies were completed by physicians (n = 16) or nurses (n = 15). More than two-thirds of the studies were performed in urban settings with predominantly African-American women (n = 27). Eight factors were identified as influencing the reproductive decision-making process in women living with HIV: ‘Socio-demographic, Health status and Pregnancy’, ‘Religion and spirituality’, ‘Beliefs and Attitudes about Antiretroviral Therapy’, ‘Healthcare providers’, ‘Significant others’, ‘Motherhood and fulfillment’, ‘Fear of perinatal infection and infection of partner(s)’, ‘Birth control and pregnancy management’. Conclusions Health care providers are not providing patient-centered care by applying scientific evidence to their practice when advising women with HIV in making reproductive decisions. Despite the strong evidence indicating pregnancy for women with HIV results in a safe birthing trajectory, one not likely to jeopardize the health of the either the mother or fetus, providers continue to recommend the women with HIV avoid pregnancy and neglect to invite partners to participate in the discussion. To review qualitative studies on the experience of sudden cardiac arrest survival from the perspective of both survivors and their key supporters, including family/close friends. A seven-step meta-ethnography and synthesis of qualitative evidence was undertaken, informed by the Meta-Ethnography Reporting Guidelines (eMERGe). Four major databases were searched (Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO; January 1995-January 2022, updated July 2023) for qualitative studies exploring survivors' and/or key supporters' experiences of cardiac arrest survival. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation – Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research (GRADE-CERQual) were applied to evaluate the overall confidence in research findings. Constructs were identified from each paper, informing theme and sub-theme development. From 15,917 unique titles/abstracts and 196 full-text articles, 32 met the inclusion criteria. Three themes captured the survivors' experiences: 1) Making sense of my cardiac arrest; 2) Learning to trust my body and mind; and 3) Re-evaluating my life. A further three themes reflected key supporters' experiences: 1) Emotional turmoil; 2) Becoming a carer: same person but different me; and 3) Engaging with a new and unknown world. However, limited data and some methodological weaknesses in included studies reduced confidence in several themes. The findings were conceived within the overarching concept of 'negotiating a new normal'. The enduring psychosocial and physical sequelae of cardiac arrest survival substantially impacts the lives of survivors and their key supporters, requiring negotiation of their 'new normality'.
