Electrochemical lithium insertion have been carried out in different compostions within the solid solution with general formula Nb8-nW9+nO47 (1≤ n ≤6). Through galvanostatic and potentiostatic techniques we have detected that lithium insertion proceeds by at least two reduction step. These process seem are relationship with the molar ratio Nb/W. The maximum lithium content reached leads to a specific capacity of 170 Ah/kg. Nevertheless, due to irreversible structural transformations in the matrix-host such capacity was lost after the first cycle. The detailed analysis about the insertion kinetic process and in situ X-ray diffraction experiments have been carried out in this work.A través de diferentes técnicas electroquímicas hemos realizado el estudio de la inserción de litio en una serie de composiciones pertenecientes a la solución sólida Nb8-nW9+nO47 (1≤ n ≤6). La inserción de litio procede al menos a través de dos procesos de reducción, los cuales guardan cierta relación con el contenido de Nb/W. La máxima cantidad de litio insertada conduce a capacidades específicas de la celda del orden de los 170 Ah/kg, la cual se pierde en sucesivos procesos de carga-descarga. Igualmente, hemos realizado un análisis de la cinética de los procesos de reducción y de los cambios estructurales que se suceden en la estructura del óxido de partida a medida que se inserta el litio a través de la difracción de rayos-X in situ.

Plastic particle occurrence in the digestive tracts of fishes from a tropical estuarine system in the Gulf of California was investigated. A total of 1095 fish were analysed, representing 15 species. In total 1384 particles of plastic debris were recovered from the gastrointestinal tracts of 552 specimens belonging to 13 species, and all consisted of threads, the majority of which were small microplastics (0.23 to 1.89), followed by large microplastics (2.07 to 4.49), and few mesoplastics (5.4 to 19.86). Plastic particles were identified using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The mean frequency of occurrence of plastics in the gastrointestinal tracts of fishes from this system was 50.5%, which is higher than frequencies reported in similar systems in other areas. The polymers identified by ATR-FTIR were polyamide (51.2%), polyethylene (36.6%), polypropylene (7.3%), and polyacrylic (4.9%). Graphenic substrates (GS), such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphene oxide (GO), are 2D materials known for their unique physicochemical properties such as their ability to enhance vibrational spectroscopic signals and quench the fluorescence of adsorbed molecules. These properties provide an opportunity to develop nanostructured GS-based systems for detecting and identifying different analytes with high sensitivity and reliability through molecular spectroscopic techniques. This work evaluated the capacities of different GS to interact with a highly fluorescent compound, thereby changing its optical emission response (fluorescence quenching) and amplifying its vibrational signal, which is the base of graphene-enhanced Raman scattering (GERS). To test these properties, we used a derivative of highly fluorescent BODIPY (BP) compounds, which cover a wide range of applications from solar energy conversion to photodynamic cancer therapy. GS prepared by using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique allowed us to quench the fluorescence emission of BP and improve its Raman spectroscopy detection limit due to the GERS effect. Increases in wastewater discharges and the generation of municipal solid wastes have resulted in deleterious effects on the environment, causing eutrophication and pollution of water bodies. It is therefore necessary to investigate sustainable bioremediation alternatives. Wastewater treatment using consortia of microalgae-bacteria is an attractive alternative because it allows the removal and recycling of nutrients, with the additional advantage of biomass production and its subsequent conversion into valuable by-products. The present study aims to integrate wastewater and landfill leachate treatment with the production of microalgal biomass, considering not only its valorization in terms of lipid and carbohydrate content but also the effect of nutrient limitation on biomass formation. The effect of treating a mixture of raw wastewater with different leachate ratios (0%, 7%, 10% and 15%) was investigated using a microalgae-bacteria consortium. Two microalgae (Desmodesmus spp. and Scenedesmus obliquus) were used. Nutrient removal, biomass concentration, carbohydrate, lipid and Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAMEs) content and morphological changes were evaluated. Removals of 82% of NH 4 + and 43% of orthophosphate from a wastewater-leachate mixture (containing 167 mg/L NH 4 + and 23 mg/L PO 4 3- ) were achieved. The highest final yield was obtained using Desmodesmus spp. (1.95 ± 0.3 g/L). The microalgae were observed to accumulate high lipid (20%) and carbohydrate (41%) contents under nutrient limiting conditions. The concentration of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) also increased. Morphological changes including the disintegration of coenobia were observed. By using a mixture of wastewater-leachate it is possible to remove nutrients, since microalgae tolerate high ammonia concentrations, and simultaneously increase the algal biomass concentration containing precursors to allow biofuel production., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. CREBBP is targeted by inactivating mutations in follicular lymphoma (FL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Here, we provide evidence from transgenic mouse models that Crebbp deletion results in deficits in B-cell development and can cooperate with Bcl2 overexpression to promote B-cell lymphoma. Through transcriptional and epigenetic profiling of these B cells, we found that Crebbp inactivation was associated with broad transcriptional alterations, but no changes in the patterns of histone acetylation at the proximal regulatory regions of these genes. However, B cells with Crebbp inactivation showed high expression of Myc and patterns of altered histone acetylation that were localized to intragenic regions, enriched for Myc DNA binding motifs, and showed Myc binding. Through the analysis of CREBBP mutations from a large cohort of primary human FL and DLBCL, we show a significant difference in the spectrum of CREBBP mutations in these 2 diseases, with higher frequencies of nonsense/frameshift mutations in DLBCL compared with FL. Together, our data therefore provide important links between Crebbp inactivation and Bcl2 dependence and show a role for Crebbp inactivation in the induction of Myc expression. We suggest this may parallel the role of CREBBP frameshift/nonsense mutations in DLBCL that result in loss of the protein, but may contrast the role of missense mutations in the lysine acetyltransferase domain that are more frequently observed in FL and yield an inactive protein., (© 2017 by The American Society of Hematology.)

The objective of this study was to analyze by Raman and UV-Vis-NIR Spectroscopic techniques, Mexican honey from Apis Mellífera, using representative samples with different botanic origins (unifloral and multifloral) and diverse climates. Using Raman spectroscopy together with principal components analysis, the results obtained represent the possibility to use them for determination of floral origin of honey, independently of the region of sampling. For this, the effect of heat up the honey was analyzed in relation that it was possible to greatly reduce the fluorescence background in Raman spectra, which allowed the visualization of fructose and glucose peaks. Using UV-Vis-NIR, spectroscopy, a characteristic spectrum profile of transmittance was obtained for each honey type. In addition, to have an objective characterization of color, a CIE Yxy and CIE L*a*b* colorimetric register was realized for each honey type. Applying the principal component analysis and their correlation with chromaticity coordinates allowed classifying the honey samples in one plot as: cutoff wavelength, maximum transmittance, tones and lightness. Background: There is minimal information on the impact of replacing sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption with water on diet quality from randomized controlled trials., Objective: We evaluated the effect of a water intake intervention on diet quality in overweight Mexican women., Methods: Women with a body mass index ≥25 and <39, 18-45 y old, and a self-reported high intake of SSBs (≥250 kcal/d) were randomly allocated to either the water and education provision (WEP) group (n = 120) or the education provision (EP) only group (n = 120). Each group received monthly nutrition counseling, and the WEP group received biweekly water deliveries for 9 mo. Three 24-h recalls, anthropometry, and demographic information were collected at baseline, and 3, 6, and 9 mo. Energy, macronutrient, sugar, SSB, fruit and vegetable, salty snack, cake and cookie, and fast food intakes were assessed in study completers (n = 189) classified by intervention assignment and by actual water intake at every time point (low <1200 vs. high ≥1200 mL/d)., Results: The WEP group reported greater decreases in SSB intake than the EP group (from 20.9% to 10.3% of energy/d vs. from 20.1% to 17.8%). Thirty-eight percent of the EP group and 84.3% of the WEP group reported attaining a water intake ≥1200 mL/d. Reductions in energy intake and food groups were similar across intervention groups. However, the high actual water intake group reported greater increases vs. the lower intake group in intake of fruits and vegetables (117 vs. 47 g/d), as well as larger reductions in salty snacks (4.6 vs. 0.7 g/d) and cakes and cookies (31.7 vs. 14.7 g/d)., Conclusions: Other than SSBs, improvements in food group intake did not differ by intervention group in overweight Mexican women. However, post hoc analyses suggested that achieving a high actual water intake was associated with additional beneficial changes in food group intake. Several studies have demonstrated that the serum of patients with cancer contains antibodies that react with a group of autoantigens denominated tumor-associated antigens (TAA). TAA can be detected prior to clinical diagnosis; thus, they would be ideal biomarkers for early detection of cancer, using only a few microliters of a patient's serum. In the current study, we used an immune proteomic approach, combining two-dimensional (2D) electrophoresis, Western blot, and matrix-associated laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) methods to identify TAA in the sera of patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Sera were obtained from 36 newly diagnosed patients with stage II breast cancer and those from 36 healthy volunteers were evaluated for the presence of the TAA. Alpha 2HS-glycoprotein (AHSG) antibodies were detected in 33 of 36 patients with breast cancer (91.7%) and in only 3 of 36 healthy patients (controls, 8.3%). Sensitivity of detection of autoantibodies against AHSG in patients with breast cancer was 91.7%. AHSG was detected in cancer tissue by immunohistochemistry. Our results strongly suggest that the presence of serum autoantibodies against AHSG protein may be useful as serum biomarkers for early-stage breast cancer screening and minimally invasive diagnosis in Mexican populations., Biological Significance: In the present study, 2D immunoblot analysis was used to make a screening in samples of sera from patients with a diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer, in order to identify some autoantibodies that react against TAA. Aflatoxins (AF) are toxic fungal secondary metabolites that are pathological to animals and humans. This study identified and quantified AF (AFB(1), AFB(2), AFG(1), AFG(2)) and their hydroxylated metabolites (AFM(1), AFM(2), AFP(1)) and aflatoxicol (AFL) from laying hen breast muscles. Aflatoxins pass from cereal feed to the laying hen tissues, causing economic losses, and from there to humans. To detect the passage of AF from feed to hen breast muscle tissues, an experiment that included 25 Hy-Line W36 121-wk-old hens was performed for 8 d. Hens in individual cages were distributed into 3 groups: a control group, with feed free of AFB(1), and 2 experimental groups, with feed spiked with 2 AFB(1) dosages: 30 µg·kg(-1) (low) or 500 µg·kg(-1) (high). The daily feed consumption per hen was recorded and afterward hens were euthanized and breast muscles were collected, weighed, and dried individually. Aflatoxins were extracted by 2 chemical methods and quantified by HPLC. Both methods were validated by lineality (calibration curves), recovery percentage (>80%), limit of detection, and limit of quantification. The AF (µg·kg(-1)) averages recovered in control breast muscles were as follows: AFB(1) (18); AFG(1), AFM(2), and AFL (0); AFG(2) (1.3); AFM(1) (52), and AFP1 (79). Hens fed with feed spiked with 30 µg·kg(-1) of AFB(1) had AFG(1) (16); AFG(2) (72); AFM(1) (0); AFM(2) (18); AFP(1) (145); and AFL (5 µg·kg(-1)). Hens with feed spiked with 500 µg·kg(-1) of AFB(1) had AFG(1) (512); AFG(2) (7); AFM(1) (4,775); AFM(2) (0); AFP(1) (661); and AFL (21 µg·kg(-1)). The best AF extraction method was Qian and Yang's method, modified by adding additional AF from both Supelclean LC18 SPE columns; its limit of detection (0.5 ng·mL(-1)) was lower compared with that of Koeltzow and Tanner, which was 1 ng·mL(-1)., (©2014 Poultry Science Association Inc.)

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a category of aggressive malignancies that represent clinically, molecularly, and etiologically heterogeneous tumors. The majority of OSCCs are associated with tobacco and alcohol use, acting both independently and synergistically, which suggests that the environment plays an important role in carcinogenesis; however, the mechanisms associated with the development of OSCC are not well understood. It has been proposed that the epigenetic components could be implicated in the initiation and progression of OSCC. Primarily, aberrant DNA methylation patterns have been widely addressed in the study of OSCC. Diverse studies have proposed that other epigenetic processes such as post-translational histone modification, the deposition of histone variants, histone chaperones, and recently non-coding RNA, can be also involved in the development of oral cancer. The exposure to particulate matter with a mean aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM10) from urban zones is considered to be a risk factor in the development of cancer. The aim of this work was to determine if PM10 exposure induces factors related to the acquisition of a neoplastic phenotype, such as cytoskeletal remodeling, changes in the subcellular localization of p21(CIP1/WAF1), an increase in β-galactosidase activity and changes in cell cycle. To test our hypothesis, PM10 from an industrial zone (IZ) and a commercial zone (CZ) were collected, and human adenocarcinoma lung cell cultures (A549) were exposed to a sublethal PM10 concentration (10 μg/cm(2)) for 24 h and 48 h. The results showed that PM10 exposure induced an increase in F-actin stress fibers and caused the cytoplasmic stabilization of p21(CIP1/WAF1) via phosphorylation at Thr(145) and Ser(146) and the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 on Thr(202). Changes in the cell cycle or apoptosis were not observed, but an increase in β-galactosidase activity was detected. The PM10 from CZ caused more dramatic effects in lung cells. We conclude that PM10 exposure induced cytoplasmic p21(CIP1/WAF1) retention, ERK1/2 activation, cytoskeleton remodeling and the acquisition of a senescence-like phenotype in lung cells. In this manuscript, we present a computational model to approximate the solutions of a partial differential equation which describes the growth dynamics of microbial films. The numerical technique reported in this work is an explicit, nonlinear finite-difference methodology which is computationally implemented using Newton's method. Our scheme is compared numerically against an implicit, linear finite-difference discretization of the same partial differential equation, whose computer coding requires an implementation of the stabilized bi-conjugate gradient method. Our numerical results evince that the nonlinear approach results in a more efficient approximation to the solutions of the biofilm model considered, and demands less computer memory. Background: Many studies have shown gemcitabine and cisplatin are radiosensitizers. Concurrent chemoradiation seems to be an efficient approach for treatment of advanced head and neck cancer (HNC), but toxicity is significant., Objective: To evaluate safety and explore efficacy of alternating chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin concurrent with radiotherapy in patients with advanced non-metastatic HNC., Patients and Methods: Twenty-eight patients diagnosed with advanced Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Head and Neck (SCCHN) in stages III (28%), IVa (36%), and IVb (36%) were treated with gemcitabine: 100mg/m(2) alternating with cisplatin: 50mg/m(2) concurrent with radiotherapy at doses of 2 Gy/day until completing 70 Gy. While awaiting for concurrent treatment, eleven patients received induction chemotherapy with cisplatin: 100mg/m(2) and 5-FU: 1000 mg/m(2). Toxicity, especially in relation to mucositis, xerostomy, dysphagia, leucopenia and radiodermitis was evaluated., Results: 5-year progression-free survival was 27.8 ± 17.2% (CI-95: 0-61.5) and overall survival was 55.9 ± 11% (CI: 34.4-77.5). Overall response rate was 93%; complete response was 64.3% and partial response was 28.6%. Extensive surgery for primary site was avoided in 19 patients (70.4%). Grade 3-4 adverse events were mucositis (46.4%), leucopenia (14.2%), dysphagia (25%), xerostomy (10.7%) and radiodermitis (3.6%). Response rates and toxicity were not significantly different among those patients with and without induction chemotherapy, but survival was higher in patients receiving induction., Conclusions: Gemcitabine alternating with cisplatin concurrent with radiotherapy is an active and safe treatment that deserves further study., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Indigo carmine and methylene blue dyes in aqueous solution were photodegraded using SiC-TiO(2) catalysts prepared by sol-gel method. After thermal treatment at 450°C, SiC-TiO(2) catalysts prepared in this work showed the presence of SiC and TiO(2) anatase phase. Those compounds showed specific surface area values around 22-25 m(2)g(-1), and energy band gap values close to 3.05 eV. In comparison with TiO(2) (P25), SiC-TiO(2) catalysts showed the highest activity for indigo carmine and methylene blue degradation, but this activity cannot be attributed to the properties above mentioned. Therefore, photocatalytic performance is due to the synergy effect between SiC and TiO(2) particles caused by the sol-gel method used to prepare the SiC-TiO(2) catalysts. TiO(2) nanoparticles are well dispersed onto SiC surface allowing the transfer of electronic charges between SiC and TiO(2) semiconductors, which avoid the fast recombination of the electron-hole pair during the photocatalytic process., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Introduction: In Mexico during 2008, were reported 127,604 new cancer cases, 6,347 of them were colorectal cancer cases and 4,276 non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases., Objective: To evaluate health related quality of life in non-Hodgkin lymphoma and colorectal cancer cases in different clinical stages, attended in a High Specialty Medical facility at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, during a 13 month period., Results: 162 patients were included, 56.8% (n=92) with NHL and 43.2% (n=70) with colorectal cancer. The scores obtained in the NHL group were: Global health status/QoL: 67.75 (± 27.55), physical functioning 69.64 (± 29.98), role functioning 71.38 (± 33.73), emotional functioning 69.7 (± 26.57), cognitive functioning 75.36 (± 28.01), social functioning 79.35 (± 29.38), fatigue 35.27 (± 28.27), nausea and vomiting 13.41 (± 21.85), pain 28.08 (± 30.25), dyspnea 19.20 (± 32.11), insomnia 30.80 (± 38.03), appetite lost 26.45 (± 36.16), constipation 19.20 (± 32.11), diarrhea 12.32 (± 26.48), financial difficulties 26.09 (± 35.57). Introduction: Quality of life is the most studied PRO (patient reported outcome) in cancer patients. With early diagnosis and better treatments in breast cancer, this entity has been transformed in a chronic disease with longer survival. Introduction: In Mexico cancer is a public health burden. Nowadays the health care systems pay special attention to patient's perception and satisfaction of the health care received. Satisfaction with quality of health care has an impact in the adherence to the treatment., Objective: To evaluate the satisfaction with the quality of health care received at the IMSS in a group of cancer patients [non Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), breast and colorectal cancer]. Socio-demographic features, co-morbid diseases, and attendance processes impact on satisfaction are also evaluated., Results: 476 cancer patients were studied: 314 with breast cancer, 92 with NHL and 70 with colorectal cancer. In women with breast cancer the mean score to nurses' interpersonal skills in non-classified disease group and clinical stage III group were: 73.64 ± 32.53, 90.00 ± 18.25 respectively (p=0.005), nurses' availability in non-classified and clinical stage III group were: 69.71 ± 30.25, 89.21 ± 19.00 respectively (p=0.003). In subjects with NHL the mean scores for doctors' technical skills in clinical stage I and III groups, were: 63.69 ± 37.78, 80.30 ± 18.46 respectively (p=0.017), doctors' information provision scores in subject in clinical stage I and IV were: 49.40 ± 40.75, 79.49 ± 24.63 respectively (p=0.043). In the group of colorectal cancer patients the mean of the score to exchange of information between clinical stage II and clinical stage III group were 50.00 ± 41.83, 84.21 ± 22.37 respectively (p=0.036). Were not observed association between attendance processes features and general satisfaction., Conclusions: In Mexico 50% of cancer patients are attended at the IMSS. Promoter methylation is believed to inactivate the expression of hMLH1. This process has been implicated in the tumorigenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the profile of hMLH1 methylation and protein expression in OSCC. The matched case-control study included 50 OSCC cases and 200 controls, with a median of age 64 (Q₁-Q₃ 54-71) years. Protein expression was determined by immunohistochemical staining, and hMLH1 gene promoter methylation was analyzed by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP). A conditional logistic regression model for risk factors was built for OSCC cases and matched controls. Promoter methylation of hMLH1 was detected in 38 (76%) OSCC cases, but in none of the control samples. Of the 38 OSCC samples with promoter methylation, 12 (32%) were negative for hMLH1 protein, and corresponded to early clinical stages (10 in stage II and 2 in stage I). All 12 unmethylated samples showed positive stain for hMLH1. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed an OR of 16.54 (IC 95%: 1.69-161.68, p=0.016) for methylation of the hMLH1 gene and early stages of OSCC, adjusting by gender and tobacco use. This study showed a high frequency of hMLH1 promoter methylation that occurred in most of the early stage cases and in about half of the late stage cases. Aflatoxins (AF) are toxic fungal secondary metabolites and are known mycotoxins pathological to animals and humans. Poultry litter is frequently used as a food supplement for ruminants, and when poultry feed contains AF, the litter becomes contaminated as well, thus having an effect on livestock health. This study identified and quantified AF (AFB(1), AFB(2), AFG(1), and AFG(2)) from poultry feed and their recovery, together with their metabolites (AFM(1), AFM(2), AFP(1), and aflatoxicol) in litter. An experiment with 25 Hy-Line W-36 hens, in their second production stage, 121 wk old, was carried out. Hens were distributed in 3 groups placed in individual cages and 1 ration of 250 g of feed was given to each hen daily. Nine hens of the control group were fed with clean feed, without AFB(1); the other 2 experimental groups, with 8 hens each, were fed with 2 AFB(1) concentrations: 30 and 500 microg.kg(-1). The feed was replaced and weighed daily throughout a 7-d period to register the amount of feed consumed by the hens. Litter from each hen was collected, weighed, and dried individually. The chemical analysis of 40 g of each one of the 200 feed and 200 litter samples was chemically extracted and concentrated with immunoaffinity columns for total AF. To quantify AF, calibration curves for each AF were done by HPLC. Feed samples of the 3 groups presented significant difference with AFB(2) and AFG(2), whereas in litter samples, there were significant differences for AFG(2) in the 500 microg.kg(-1) group. Poultry litter had traces of AFM(1), AFM(2), AFP(1), and AFL with no significant differences among treatments. Aflatoxin B(1) prevalence in litter samples can cause damages in livestock because this mycotoxin reduces the digestibility of ruminant feed up to 67%.

In this work, NaTaO(3) compounds doped with 1M% of La and Sm, were prepared by the sol-gel (SG) method and solid state (SS) reaction; and tested as photocatalysts on the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV light. The structural characterization by X-ray powder diffraction revealed that the crystallization of the NaTaO(3) phase prepared by the sol-gel method started at 600 degrees C, reaching maximum crystallization at 800 degrees C. It was determined that the presence of Sm and La retard the crystallization of the NaTaO(3) phase. On the other hand, the compounds synthesized in this work showed particle sizes in the nanometric scale, as it was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The specific surface area of the compounds synthesized by the sol-gel method, showed values 4 times higher than those obtained by the solid state reaction, favoring their functional and photocatalytic performance in the methylene blue degradation. In addition, the best photocatalytic performance was shown by the NaTaO(3) doped with Sm and heated at 600 degrees C, having a half-life time of 65 min.

Estimates of the incidence of aortoenteric fistula as a sequela of surgery of the aorta range 1-2%. This complication is less common in patients who have had an aortic endograft implanted for aortoiliac aneurysm. We present three cases of aortoenteric fistula complicating endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (3/423 patients, 0.7% in our series).

The full assignments of the (1)H and (13)C NMR signals of steroids bearing the 16beta,23:23,26-diepoxy side chain are provided. Differentiation of the diasterotopic H-26 pair was achieved with the aid of NOESY experiments. The main substituent and steric effects associated with this moiety and their influence on the chemical shifts of the neighboring atoms are discussed.

Purpose: To examine the prevalence of coronary risk factors in Mexican adolescents, and their relations to school type, gender, and residence in urban and rural areas., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 3121 junior high school students, aged 12 to 16 years, attending urban schools (eight public, n = 1850, two private, n = 480) and three rural public (n = 791) schools. Weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure, and fasting glucose and lipid-lipoprotein levels were measured. Tobacco smoking and physical activity were also ascertained. The prevalence rates of cardiovascular risk factors were determined by gender and school type., Results: Obesity, overweight, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, and physical inactivity were higher for urban than rural adolescents. The prevalence of the low HDL-C level was exceedingly high in adolescents of three school types (> 30%) but particularly in male rural students (48.9%). Compared with rural students, high LDL-cholesterol was twice as high in private schoolchildren. The prevalence of impaired fasting glucose was .35% in the whole population and much higher in obese males (1.6%) and obese females (2.4%)., Conclusions: Our findings highlight an epidemic of coronary risk factors mainly in adolescents living in the urban area, suggesting the importance of environmental factors.

A new concept for affinity two-phase partitioning was tested. The partitioning was based on the interaction of target membranes with a primary antibody which, in turn, interacted with a biotinylated secondary antibody and NeutrAvidin-dextran in a poly(ethylene glycol)/dextran two-phase system. Caveolae selectively redistributed from the top phase to the NeutrAvidin-dextran-containing bottom phase by employing anti-caveolin as the primary antibody. This immunoaffinity approach was more selective than the established sucrose gradient centrifugation method and resulted in highly purified caveolae from Triton X-100-treated liver and lung plasma membranes. The same approach, employing other selective primary antibodies, should facilitate the purification also of other membrane fractions.

Objective: To describe a specific electroclinical type of epileptic seizure in a patient with Rett syndrome., Patient and Methods: We present the case of a girl with Rett syndrome and epilepsy, whose seizures followed two differentiated phases, namely (a) a brief hypertonic onset with tonic-axial predominance, followed by (b) a posterior prolonged clinical absence. These two phases were associated, respectively, to a paroxystic desynchronisation or generalised rapid spikes discharges, followed by a critical slow activity., Conclusions: The epileptic seizures described in this report have not been previously documented in Rett syndrome. We review and discuss pathophysiological hypotheses in the light of this and previously reported cases of the syndrome.

Hepatic lipase activity is detectable in liver but also in adrenal glands, ovaries, and plasma. The subunit size of hepatic lipase in liver, adrenal glands, and nonheparin plasma was compared. Hepatic lipase in liver and adrenal glands appeared as a 55 kDa band. In liver, a faint band of lower size was also detected. In nonheparin plasma, hepatic lipase appeared as a doublet of 57 kDa and 59 kDa. When activity/mass ratio was calculated, similar values were obtained for liver and adrenal glands. In plasma this value was much lower. After heparin administration in vivo, hepatic lipase activity in plasma increased nearly 100-fold with appearance of an additional 55 kDa band in postheparin plasma. This band coeluted with activity after preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Differences in size persisted after digestion with peptide-N-glycosidase F. A progressive increase in 57 kDa and 59 kDa in postheparin plasma followed disappearance of the 55 kDa band, suggesting that these larger bands originate from the smaller form. In plasma, both smaller and larger forms were associated with HDL, but not with LDL or VLDL. We conclude that rat plasma contains a larger form of hepatic lipase that is inactive in in vitro assay.

From the aerial parts of Cissampelos pareira L. (Menispermaceae), a chalcone-flavone dimer has been isolated which, mainly from NMR spectroscopic and MS data, was proved to be 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-7-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-(2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxybenzoyl)-furano[3,2-g]benzopyran-4-one. This has been assigned the trivial name cissampeloflavone. The compound has good activity against Trypanosoma cruzi and T. brucei rhodesiense and has a low toxicity to the human KB cell line.

An increasing number of human cases of gnathostomiasis have been reported in Sinaloa, Mexico, most of whom have a custom of eating of raw fish dishes such as 'cebiche'. Here we report five adult patients, three women and two men, having an acute episode of vomiting and abdominal pain a few minutes after eating a dish of cebiche prepared from a spotted sleeper perch (Eleotris picta) fished from a nearby lake in southern Sinaloa. All five patients experienced acute throat pain, chest and joint pains, headache and fever. One patient, a 55-year-old male, was hospitalized with suspected pancreatitis and pneumonia. By 8-9 days later, all five patients developed between three and 12 edematous, migrating skin lesions on the back, abdomen, upper and lower extremities, face, eye and scalp. By ELISA, all of them were sero-positive to Gnathostoma doloresi antigen and had elevated IgE levels. Eosinophilia was found in two patients. These patients lived in an agricultural and fishing community. In this community we carried out a sero-epidemiological survey and study of living conditions in a random sample of 309 individuals distributed in 74 households. Frequent consumption of raw fish was reported in 36% of households, and 12 individuals had a clinical history of migrating skin lesions. The sero-prevalence to Gnathostoma antigens was 34.95%. Five fish species and four species of ichthyophagous birds collected from three lakes in the village and a nearby estuary were infected with the advanced third-stage larvae of G. binucleatum, a species found in Ecuador and Mexico. The results describe the first known outbreak of acute gnathostomiasis on the American continent.

Biotinylated negatively charged liposomes as well as membranes were affinity partitioned in an aqueous poly(ethylene glycol)-dextran two-phase system using NeutrAvidin conjugated to dextran as affinity ligand. Both liposomes and membranes redistributed from top to bottom phase upon addition of NeutrAvidin-dextran. The presence of 35-60 mM Li2SO4 was necessary both to force the components into the top phase without ligand and for ligand-dependent redistribution into the bottom phase. Attaching biotin via a hexanamidohexanoyl spacer and an increased density of biotin or NeutrAvidin enhanced the affinity separation. The separation conditions in these model experiments provide a basis for affinity partitioning of membranes using other affinity ligands.

Emotional stress affects cellular integrity in many tissues including the heart. Much less is known about the effects of social stress. We studied the effect of emotional (immobilization with or without cold exposure) or social (intermale confrontation) stress in mice. Tissue injury was measured by means of the release of enzyme activities to blood plasma: lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), aspartate transaminase (AST), and alanine transaminase (ALT). Tape-immobilization increased all these activities in the plasma. AST-ALT ratio was also increased in these animals. Electrophoretic analysis of CK isoenzymes showed the appearance of CK-MB. These results indicate that the heart was injured in immobilized mice. Analysis of LDH isoenzymes and measurement of alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (HBDH) activity suggests that other tissues, in addition to the heart, contribute to the increase in plasma LDH activity. Restraint in small cylinders increased plasma LDH, CK, AST, and ALT activities, but to lower levels than in tape immobilization. Because the decrease in liver glycogen and the increase in plasma epidermal growth factor (EGF) were also smaller in restraint than in the tape-immobilization model of emotional stress, we conclude that the former is a less intense stressor than the latter. Cold exposure during the restraint period altered the early responses to stress (it enhanced liver glycogen decrease, but abolished the increase in plasma EGF concentration). Cold exposure during restraint enhanced heart injury, as revealed by the greater increase in CK and AST activities. Intermale confrontation progressively decreased liver glycogen content. Plasma EGF concentration increased (to near 100 nM from a resting value of 0.1 nM) until 60 minutes, and decreased thereafter. Confrontation also affected cellular integrity in some tissues, as indicated by the rise in plasma LDH activity. However, in this type of stress, the heart appeared to be specifically protected because there was no increase in plasma CK activity, and both AST and ALT increased, but the AST-ALT ratio remained constant. Habituation to restraint (1 h/d, 4 days) made mice resistant to restraint-induced tissue injury as indicated by the lack of an increase in plasma LDH, CK, AST, or ALT activities. Similar general protection against homotypic stress-induced injury was observed in mice habituated to intermale confrontation.

Acute stress-induced injury in tissues has been revealed by both biochemical markers in plasma and microscopy. However, little is known of the mechanisms by which tissue integrity is restored. Recently, induction of early response genes such as c-fos has been reported in the heart and stomach of immobilized animals. Herein, we show that immobilization stress in mice increased plasma alanine aminotransferase activity, a marker of liver damage. c-Fos protein accumulation in liver was induced by stress after 20 minutes of immobilization and persisted for 3 hours. Immobilization also induced the release of epidermal growth factor (EGF) from submandibular salivary glands and a transient increase in EGF concentration in plasma. Although EGF administration induced a 2.5-fold increase in c-Fos mass in the liver of anesthetized mice, sialoadenectomy (which abolished the effect of immobilization on plasma EGF) did not affect the stress-induced rise in plasma alanine aminotransferase activity or liver c-Fos accumulation. Therefore, we conclude that immobilization stress induces c-Fos accumulation in liver and that this effect is not triggered by the increase in plasma EGF concentration.

The partitioning behaviour of biotinylated mixed liposomes in aqueous poly(ethylene glycol)/dextran two-phase systems containing NeutrAvidin-dextran suggests that the biotin-NeutrAvidin affinity interaction is charge dependent. Biotinylated phosphatidylcholine liposomes with a low negative surface charge distributed in the NeutrAvidin-containing bottom phase at neutral pH, but the introduction of additional negative charges by including phosphatidylserine or the surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate in the liposomes caused them to distribute in the poly(ethylene glycol)-rich top phase instead. By gradually lowering the pH of the affinity two-phase system below the isoelectric point (6.3) of NeutrAvidin, negatively charged phosphatidylserine/phosphatidylcholine liposomes increasingly were attracted by NeutrAvidin to the bottom phase. It is suggested that acidic amino acids present at the rim of the biotin-binding pocket of NeutrAvidin may interact electrostatically with charged residues of the closely apposed liposome surface affecting the affinity interaction.

Few experimental data regarding protein requirements of lactating women are available. This study was designed to determine the protein requirement of seven healthy lactating women from a poor Mexican community who were 2-6 mo postpartum and had a mean body mass index of 21.8 +/- 2 kg/m2. Nitrogen balances were performed at intakes of 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 g.kg body wt-1.d-1 of a mixed protein diet (70% derived from vegetable sources). A balance at 1.2 g.kg body wt-1.d-1 of a high-quality mixed protein (80% from animal sources) was the reference. The experimental diets were designed to resemble the habitual diet in terms of energy and macronutrients. The balance responses to nitrogen intake were -35.5 +/- 12.6, -10.5 +/- 14.8, and 7.8 +/- 19.2 mg N.kg body wt-1.d-1, respectively. Equilibrium balance was attained at 178.9 +/- 25.8 mg N (1.1 g protein.kg body wt-1.d-1), close to current recommended dietary allowances, albeit the dietary protein was mostly from vegetable sources.

One hundred thirty children (65-95 mo old) from a low-socioeconomic neighborhood of Guatemala City participated in a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial of zinc supplementation. One group received 10 mg Zn/d (n = 65) and the other group received a placebo (n = 65); 90 +/- 9.2 doses were given over 120-150 d. Stools were examined for prevalence and intensity of helminths and prevalence of protozoa at the beginning and end of the study. The initial prevalence was 42% for helminths and 18% for protozoa, with no differences between groups. Mebendazole was administered to all children, and protozoal infections were treated specifically at the beginning of the study. The reinfection rates were 17% (11 of 65) for helminths and 12.3% (8 of 65) for protozoa in the zinc group and 15% (10 of 65) and 10.7% (7 of 65), respectively, in the placebo group (P > 0.05). Analysis by specific parasites revealed no treatment effect. We conclude that neither plasma or hair zinc status nor oral zinc supplementation had an effect on parasite status in children.
