Microplastics presence in the environment is now a major global issue. Personal care and cosmetic products (PCCPs) contain microbeads and are one of the primary sources of microplastics which contribute to health and ecological risks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of microbeads in a widely used PCCPs (facial scrubs) in the Indian market and the extent to which these microbeads can serve as vectors for toxic compounds like chromium under different environmental conditions. Four of the ten facial scrubs contained microbeads of size ranging from 220 to 600 µm. Based on FTIR analyses, two of the four tested samples (A and B) were made of polypropylene, while the other two samples (C and D) were made of polyethylene. Furthermore, the study revealed that PP microbeads, which are very common, could efficiently adsorb Cr (VI) (3.09 mg Cr/g). Adsorption of Cr (VI) on microbeads was greater in acidic and saline conditions indicating that microbeads can potentially act as vectors for toxic compounds in marine aquatic ecosystems. It was estimated that 4.7 x 1010 microbeads, which amount to 3.8 tonnes of microbeads are released into the environment annually. Based on these results, policy measures for preventing the release of microbeads/microplastics into the environment are suggested.

Advanced oxidation (AOPs) utilizing peroxymonosulfate (PMS) are efficient processes for the degradation of organic pollutants. This study aimed to synthesize and characterize cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), graphene oxide (GO), MIL-101(Fe), and their composite structures. The nanomaterials were applied as catalysts by PMS for triclosan (TCS) decomposition. The maximum removal rates of TCS were 49.29, 66.13, 84.04, 89.73, and 100% for PMS alone, CoFe2O4, GO, MIL-101(Fe), and CoFe2O4/MIL-101(Fe)/GO with PMS, respectively. Metal ions leaching declined in CoFe2O4/MIL-101(Fe)/GO/PMS compared with others. Hence, the composite nanomaterials appear to be effective catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants by PMS activation.

Background: Personal care products (PCPs) contain many different compounds and are a source of exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including phthalates and phenols. Early-life exposure to EDCs commonly found in PCPs has been linked to earlier onset of puberty. Objective: To characterize the human and animal evidence on the association between puberty-related outcomes and exposure to PCPs and their chemical constituents and, if there is sufficient evidence, identify groups of chemicals and outcomes to support a systematic review for a class-based hazard or risk assessment. Methods: We followed the OHAT systematic review framework to characterize the human and animal evidence on the association between puberty-related health outcomes and exposure to PCPs and their chemical constituents. Results: Ninety-eight human and 299 animal studies that evaluated a total of 96 different chemicals were identified and mapped by key concepts including chemical class, data stream, and puberty-related health outcome. Among these studies, phthalates and phenols were the most well-studied chemical classes. Most of the phthalate and phenol studies examined secondary sex characteristics and changes in estradiol and testosterone levels. Studies evaluating PCP use and other chemical classes (e.g., parabens) had less data. Conclusions: This systematic evidence map identified and mapped the published research evaluating the association between exposure to PCPs and their chemical constituents and puberty-related health outcomes. The resulting interactive visualization allows researchers to make evidence-based decisions on the available research by enabling them to search, sort, and filter the literature base of puberty-related studies by key concepts. This map can be used by researchers and regulators to prioritize and target future research and funding to reduce uncertainties and address data gaps. It also provides information to inform a class-based hazard or risk assessment on the association between phthalate and phenol exposures and puberty-related health outcomes.

Parabens (PBs), a class of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are extensively used as additives in personal care products (PCPs); however, distinguishing between endogenous and exogenous contamination from PCPs in hair remains a challenge. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the levels, distribution patterns, impact factors, and sources of PBs in 119 human hair samples collected from Changchun, northeast China. The detection rates of methylparaben (MeP), propylparaben (PrP), and ethylparaben (EtP) in hair samples were found to be 100%. The concentration of PBs in hair followed the order of MeP (57.48 ng/g) > PrP (46.40 ng/g) > EtP (6.80 ng/g). Personal care products (PCPs) inevitably come into contact with the skin in people’s daily life, potentially causing adverse effects on human health. The adverse effects can be exacerbated under UV irradiation but are rarely studied. In this study, to clearly understand the damage of representative PCPs to human skin and their photochemical transformation behaviors, fragrance tonalide (AHTN) was measured in the presence of amino acids as a basic building block of human tissue. The results showed that amino acids could decelerate the photochemical transformation rate of AHTN, increasing the likelihood of AHNT persisting on the skin surface and the health risk to the human being. Further, the interaction between amino acids and AHTN was investigated. AHTN could play bidirectional roles in damaging amino acids: the photosensitizer and reactive activator. As a photosensitizer, the 1O2 generated from the AHTN photosensitization was partly employed to oxidative damage amino acids. Furthermore, by combining experiments with quantum chemical computation, the carbonyl group of the activator AHTN was found to be the active site to activate the N-containing group of amino acids. The activation mechanism was the electron transfer between AHTN and amino acids. Imines formed during the photochemical transformation of AHTN with histidine/glycine were the molecular initiating event for potential skin sensitization. This study reported for the first time that skin photosensitizer formation threatens human health during the photochemical transformation of AHTN.

The occurrence of PPCPs in aquatic environments and their potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms have raised worldwide concerns. To address this issue, a study was conducted to analyze 137 selected PPCPs in Korean surface waters, and an optimized risk-based prioritization was performed. The results revealed that 120 PPCPs were detected, with 98 quantified at concentrations ranging from few ng/L to 42,733 ng/L for metformin. The 95% upper confidence limit (UCL95) of the mean value of the measured environmental concentration (MEC) for Metformin was about eight times higher than the second highest compound, dimethyl phthalate, indicating that antidiabetic groups had the highest concentration among the therapeutic groups. An optimized risk-based prioritization was then assessed based on the multiplication of two indicators, the Frequency of Exceedance and the Extent of Exceedance of Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNECs), which can be calculated using the traditional risk quotient (RQ) approach. The study found that clotrimazole had the highest risk quotient value of 17.4, indicating a high risk to aquatic organisms, with seven and 13 compounds showing RQ values above 1 and 0.1, respectively. After considering the frequency of exceedance, clotrimazole still had the highest novel risk quotient (RQf) value of 17.4, with 99.6% of its MECs exceeding PNECs. However, the number of compounds with RQf values above 1 decreased from seven to five, with cetirizine and flubendazole being excluded. Furthermore, only 10 compounds exhibited RQf values above 0.1. The study also observed significant differences in the results between risk-based and exposure-based prioritization methods, with only five compounds, cetirizine, olmesartan, climbazole, sulfapyridine, and imidacloprid, identified in both methods. This finding highlights the importance of considering multiple methods for prioritizing chemicals, as different approaches may yield different results.

Parabens are a category of antimicrobial preservatives that may play a role in the etiology and epidemiology of cancers. Parabens are employed in a wide range of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products, and processed foods. Parabens are thought to influence the evolution of carcinogenesis in breast cancer by acting as genotoxicants, cell proliferation factors, migratory and metastatic activators, and hyper-accumulate in breast cancer cells. A goal of this study was to characterize the relationship between paraben contamination and the incidence of both malignant and benign breast tumors in patients attending Hojati and Khanavadeh hospitals, in the city of Isfahan, Iran. A second goal was to examine the relationship among methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, and n-butyl paraben concentrations, exposure factors for parabens, and risk factors for breast cancer among patients with cancerous and non-cancerous breast tissues. A reference for median concentration of total parabens in healthy, non-tumor tissue is 160 ng/g (Barr et al., 2012). In this study, benign breast tumors had a mean concentration of 357 ng/g of total parabens. In contrast, malignant breast tissue had a mean concentration of 472 ng/g(mean) total parabens. Malignant tumors had higher n-propyl paraben (β=39.52; p=0.039) and n-butyl paraben (β=43.92; p=0.028) concentrations among the patients with a positive human epidermal growth factor receptor2 (HER2) rather than the patients with a negative HER2. Results indicated that higher age was associated with higher n-butyl paraben concentration (β=1.97; p=0.012) among the patients with malignant tumors. Moreover, the body mass index (BMI) had a positive relationship with ethyl paraben concentration (β=6.37; p= 0.030) among patients with malignant tumors. The questionnaire-survey used in this study was unable to discern why there was higher accumulation of parabens in the tumor-tissue types. Larger population-based longitudinal studies are necessary to confirm this association and to evaluate the association of parabens with clinical indicators of breast cancer and mortality.

Prenatal exposure to certain organic chemicals like pesticides and phenols has been lifelong associated with birth outcomes and health disorders. Many personal care product (PCP) ingredients have similar properties or structures to those chemicals. Previous studies have documented the occurrence of UV filters (UVFs) and paraben preservatives (PBs) in the placenta, but observational studies concerning PCPs chemicals and foetal exposure are particularly scarce. Thus, this work aimed to assess the presence of a wide range of PCPs chemicals using target and suspect screening in the umbilical cord blood of new born babies to evaluate their potential transfer to the fetus. To do so, we analysed 69 umbilical cord blood plasma samples from a mother–child cohort from Barcelona (Spain). We quantified 8 benzophenone-type UVFs and their metabolites, and 4 PBs using validated analytical methodologies based on target screening using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Then, we screened for additional 3246 substances using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and advanced suspect analysis strategies. Six UVFs and three parabens were detected in the plasma with frequencies between 1.4% and 17.4% and concentrations up to 53.3 ng/mL (benzophenone-2). Thirteen additional chemicals were tentatively identified in the suspect screening, and ten were further confirmed with the corresponding standards. Among them, we found the organic solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, the chelating agent 8-hydroxyquinoline, and the antioxidant 2,2′-methylenebis(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol), which have been demonstrated to display reproductive toxicity. UVFs and PBs presence in the umbilical cord blood demonstrates mother-fetus transfer through the placental barrier and prenatal exposure to these PCPs chemicals, which may lead to adverse effects in the early stages of fetal development. Considering the small cohort used in this study, the reported results should be interpreted as a preliminary reference for the background umbilical cord transfer levels of the target PCPs chemicals. Further research is needed to determine the long-term consequences of prenatal exposure to PCPs chemicals.

The widespread use of personal care products (PCPs) and subsequent exposure to their volatile methylsiloxane (VMS) content are often overlooked worldwide. Moreover, regulatory measures addressing VMS levels are sparse, and research on VMS levels in PCPs is limited. Therefore in this study, 141 PCPs from Korea, one of the biggest PCP markets in the world, were extracted and analyzed for seven VMSs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Overall, cyclic VMS (cVMS) compounds were found at higher concentrations than linear VMS (lVMS) compounds, accounting for more than 93% of the total VMS concentration. The highest VMS content in PCPs was observed for octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), at approximately 130,000 and 110,000 μg·g -1 , respectively. Additionally, the total VMS (∑VMS) concentration were in the order of face > hair > body products. PCPs were classified as non-rinse or rinse products based on their retention time on the body of the consumer. Non-rinse body products had more than twelve times the ∑VMS content of rinse body products (341 and 26.8 μg·g -1 ). Rinse hair products are three times the ∑VMS content of non-rinse hair products (576 and 191 μg·g -1 ). Furthermore, the principal component analysis suggested that PCPs can be grouped according to their cVMS content, with D3 and decamethylcyclopenatsiloxane (D5), D4, and D5 co-occurring. Notably, daily dermal exposure to VMSs in PCPs was largely determined by the retention time of the PCP on the body, followed by the VMS concentration. Although exposures to cVMS compounds were generally higher, exposure to the lVMS content of some PCPs was higher depending on the product type. Therefore, it is crucial to consider the significance of all VMS compounds, not solely cVMS, in exposure calculation and regulations. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals reported in daily supplies, and skin absorption is one of the routes for human exposure to PFASs. This study aims to evaluate the potential risk of PFASs exposure from cosmetics and personal care products in China. A random sampling of 44 domestic cosmetics and personal care products, summarized into 6 categories, was conducted to investigate the concentrations of 24 target PFASs. PFASs concentrations of 86.4 % products were lower than 100 ng/g, and 34.2 % products were lower than 10 ng/g. PFCAs and PAPs were dominant. Keywords of "wear-resistant" and "long-lasting" may indicate the presence of PFASs in products. Disabled PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS were not detected. Notably, the presence of PFHxA should be of concern, and its detection frequency reached 59.1 %, with the maximum concentration of 1274.77 ng/g. Further, the daily exposure dose (DED) of ∑PFASs from skin exposure through cosmetics and personal care products was evaluated to be 3.01 ng/kg-bw/day, which wasn't negligible compared to the prescribed acceptable intake value. Personal care products (PCPs) are often adulterated with antimicrobial agents, such as quinolones, which pose risks to consumer safety and challenge regulatory oversight. Current detection methods rely on standard reference substances and are limited in identifying novel quinolone isomers and structural derivatives. In this study, we present the first use of MixONat, an advanced dereplication tool, combined with 13 C NMR spectroscopy to detect illegal quinolone additives in PCPs. Key advancements include the establishment of an in-house quinolone database, innovative sample pretreatment methods, and the integration of these elements to improve the detection of new illegal additives in PCPs. Standard addition experiments in both blank matrices and commercial cosmetics successfully identified new quinolones not included in the database, with effective differentiation of stereoisomers such as ofloxacin and levofloxacin. Understanding consumer habits and practices of cosmetics and personal care products (PCP) is essential to generate realistic product exposure data for the safety assessment of ingredients such as fragrance materials. Product usages can vary across regions due to differences in cultural norms, seasonal and climate conditions, and the availability of different product forms, yet there is limited data published on cosmetics and PCP use outside of North America and Europe. This study reports the habits and practices of cosmetics and PCP (such as frequency and amount of use) in Singapore where participants (n = 494, aged 21-64 years) recorded their product usages and had their products weighed over a two-week period. Overall, similar use patterns were observed across demographic groups within the Singapore population for most of the products surveyed, as were the expected usage amounts. Additionally, the Singaporean dataset was mapped onto the Creme-RIFM aggregate exposure model to assess exposure estimates. Preliminary comparisons with product exposures observed in the United States (US) and Europe suggest that exposures in Singapore are comparable. Despite being one of the most remote areas on the planet, the Antarctic continent is subject to anthropogenic influences. The presence of various groups of contaminants, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has been documented in the region over the past decades. However, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding the detection of new pollutants, such as emerging contaminants (ECs), in Antarctic coastal environments. This study analyzed the occurrence and levels of selected POPs, PAHs, ECs in surface sediments from Admiralty Bay, Antarctica Peninsula. Non-target screening was employed to identify potential novel contaminants in the region. Samples (n = 17) were extracted using an accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system and instrumental analyses were performed using gas chromatography coupled to a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC/MS-MS). Regarding regulated contaminants, concentrations of Σ5PCBs ranged from -1 , while Σ16PAHs ranged from 2.6 to 617.4 ng g -1 . These compounds were predominant in the Martel inlet, suggesting influences of local input sources, especially for PAHs. ECs were detected in some sites of the Ezcurra and Martel inlets, especially nearby the Brazilian and Polish research stations. The UV filters homosalate (0.3 to 251.3 ng g -1 ) and octocrylene (0.7 to 93.8 ng g -1 ) were the most abundant EC, followed by TPP (0.1 to 87.4 ng g -1 ) and galaxolide (0.2 to 55.0 ng g -1 ). Applying non-target analysis, phthalates, and the fragrance OTNE (octahydro-tetramethyl-naphthalenyl-ethanone) were identified for the first time in Antarctic sediments. The data highlights the contribution of human activities in the region, possibly through wastewater effluents. Personal care products (PCPs) are contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) and their analysis in complex matrices such as solid environmental samples imply a challenge. The aim of this review article is to provide a 10-years overview and present update on extraction methods to determine different PCPs families including fragrance allergens, synthetic musks, preservatives, ultraviolet (UV) filters, plasticizers and siloxanes in soils, sediments, sludge and biota. The most relevant applications and green approaches on advanced extraction procedures such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) or quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged & safe extraction (QuEChERS) will be addressed. The latest trends in microextraction techniques and the hybridization between different techniques will be also presented.

The growing presence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in aquatic environments, as well as their harmful impacts on the biosphere and humans, has become a global concern. Recent developments and advancements in pharmaceuticals, agricultural practices, industrial activities, and human personal care substances have paved the way for drastic changes in EP concentrations and impacts on the ecosystem. As a result, it is critical to mitigate EP's harmful effects before they jeopardize the ecological equilibrium of the overall ecosystem and the sustainable existence of life on Earth. This review comprehensively documented the types, origins, and remediation strategies of EPs, and underscored the significance of this study in the current context. We briefly stated the major classification of EPs based on their organic and inorganic nature. Furthermore, this review systematically evaluates the occurrence of EPs due to the fast-changing ecological scenarios and their impact on human health. Recent studies have critically discussed the emerging physical and chemical processes for EP removal, highlighting the limitations of conventional remediation technologies. We reviewed and presented the challenges associated with EP remediation and degradation using several methods, including physical and chemical methods, with the application of recent technologies. Methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP) are among the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics, drugs, and foods. These compounds have been associated with toxic effects due to the overuse of products with parabens in their formulation. The toxicity of parabens may be correlated to endocrine disruption, owing to their ability to mimic the actions of estradiol. In this paper, a simple, sustainable, robust, and innovative dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) technique was developed and employed to extract these xenobiotics from body cream samples, aiming to calculate the margin of safety (MoS) to assess the risk of exposure. The validated method presented suitable linearity (r > 0.99), lower limits of detection (ranging from 0.01 to 0.04 % w/w), and satisfactory precision and accuracy (ranging from 4.33 to 10.47, and from -14.25 to 13.85, respectively). Seven of the ten analysed samples presented paraben contents within the acceptable concentration according to European legislation. This review presents a compilation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) that have been detected in waters, sediments and biota of lakes throughout the world by various researchers, over a 26-year time period (1996–2021). Numerous studies published in the literature reported that 286 pharmaceuticals and 70 personal care products (PCPs) were present in waters, 101 pharmaceuticals and 50 PCPs were present in sediments, and 63 pharmaceuticals and 19 PCPs were present in biota of lakes throughout the world. Among the pharmaceuticals present in lake waters, 194 had concentrations of over 5 ng/L, 173 were present in only one continent, whereas several (e.g. caffeine, carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole) were detected in lake waters of almost every continent (6/7). Among the PCPs present in lake waters, 56 had concentrations of over 5 ng/L, whereas 41 were present in only one continent. PPCPs were found in 260 lakes, located within 44 countries, the majority of them present in Asian, European and North American lakes. Lakes with high pharmaceutical concentrations were affected by either controlled or uncontrolled wastewater originated from various types of sources. Based on this study, of high concern is the Asian continent, where PPCP pollution should be strictly controlled in order to prevent possible serious health threats to humans and living organisms.

Phthalates are diesters of phthalic acid and have been widely used as plasticizers in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics. Phthalates are also used as excipients in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PCPs). Phthalates can migrate from the plastic into the air, water and food, and humans can be exposed via multiple pathways such as dermal, oral and inhalation. There is evidence that phthalates can induce reproductive and developmental toxicity not only in experimental animals but also in humans through disruption of estrogenic activity. The aim of this study was to collect concentration data on five phthalates in foods and PCPs from the scientific literature and combine these with food consumption data and PCP use frequency data from the EuroMix biomonitoring (BM) study in order to assess exposure. Probabilistic exposure assessments of phthalates were performed from foods and PCPs. Due to the very limited data available in the literature for DINCH, an exposure assessment was not carried out for this compound. The food groups with the highest contribution to phthalates exposure were: beverages, dairy, bread and meat products. The exposure estimates were compared with the measured phthalate metabolite levels from 24-hour urine samples. Regarding the oral route, measured phthalate exposure was between the lower bound (LB) and medium bound (MB) estimated exposure for all phthalates, except for DEP. The measured exposure from urine correlated with the estimated exposure from food for DEHP and DBP, while for BBP and DEP it correlated with the exposure estimates from PCPs. There were no significant differences between the BM data and the estimated exposure, except for DINP for males (p = 0.01). The LB and MB phthalate exposures estimated from foods and PCPs and the measured exposure from the urine were considerably lower than their respective tolerable daily intake (TDI) values established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). For the upper bound (UB), the exposure estimates are approximately double the TDI; however, this is regarded as a worst-case estimate and has low correlation with the measured exposure.

Hairdressers are exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), many of which have been linked to acute and chronic health effects. Those hairdressers serving an ethnic clientele may potentially experience disproportionate exposures from frequent use of products containing VOCs or different VOC concentrations contained in products which are marketed to the specific needs of their clientele. However, no biomonitoring studies have investigated occupational exposures in this population. In the present pilot study, we sought to characterize concentrations and exposure determinants for 28 VOC biomarkers in post-shift urine samples among 23 hairdressers primarily serving an ethnic clientele. VOC biomarker concentrations among hairdressers of color were compared to concentrations among a comparison group of 17 office workers and a representative sample of women participating in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. VOC biomarkers were detected in all hairdressers with higher concentrations observed among hairdressers serving a predominantly Black versus Latino clientele, and among hairdressers overall versus office workers and women in the U.S. general population. Median biomarker concentrations for acrolein, 1,3-butadiene, and xylene in hairdressers were more than twice as high as those observed among office workers. Median concentrations for 1-bromopropane, acrolein and 1,3-butadiene were more than four times higher among all hairdressers compared to those reported among women in the U.S. general population. Select salon services (e.g., sister locs, flat ironing, permanent hair coloring, permanent waves or texturizing, Brazilian blowout or keratin treatment, etc.) were also associated with higher VOC biomarker concentrations among hairdressers. This pilot study represents the first biomonitoring analysis to characterize VOC exposures among women hairdressers of color and to provide evidence that this occupational population may experience elevated VOC exposures compared to women in the U.S. general population. Results from our study represent an important first step in elucidating occupational VOC exposures in this understudied occupational group. Larger studies among a racially and ethnically diverse cohort of hairdressers are warranted to confirm our findings and inform future exposure interventions in this understudied occupational population.

The present work provides the first data on the occurrence of different classes of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in surface marine sediments from an Arctic fjord (Kongsfjorden, Svalbard Islands, Norway). The target compounds included: ciprofloxacin; enrofloxacin; amoxicillin; erythromycin; sulfamethoxazole; carbamazepine; diclofenac; ibuprofen; acetylsalicylic acid; paracetamol; caffeine; triclosan; N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide; 17β-estradiol; 17α-ethinyl estradiol and estrone. Sampling was performed in the late summer, when high sedimentation rates occur, and over 5 years (2018-2022). Based on the environmental concentrations (MECs) found of emerging contaminants and the relative predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs), an environmental risk assessment (ERA) for sediments was performed, including the estimation of the Risk Quotients (RQs) of selection and propagation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in this Arctic marine ecosystem. Sediments were extracted by Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE) and the extracts were purified by Solid Phase Extraction (SPE). Analytical determination was conducted with liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS). PPCPs were detected in the sediments along the fjord in all the years investigated, with overall concentrations similar in most cases to those reported in urbanized areas of the planet and ranging from a minimum of 6.85 ng/g for triclosan to a maximum of 684.5 ng/g for ciprofloxacin. This latter was the only antibiotic detected but was the most abundant compound (32 %) followed by antipyretics (16 %), hormones (14 %), anti-inflammatories (13 %), insect repellents (11 %), stimulants (9 %), and disinfectants (5 %). Highest concentrations of all PPCPs detected were found close to the Ny-Ålesund research village, where human activities and the lack of appropriate wastewater treatment technologies were recognized as primary causes of local contamination. Gulf of Urabá is considered a tourist zone of Antioquia Department attracts a large number of visitors to explore the aquatic ecosystem and beaches thus offering a large economic benefit. However, this region has been affected by various anthropogenic effects thus generating an environmental problematic that affect aquatic ecosystem. Over the years, several research has been evaluated pollutant such as pesticides, metals and physicochemical parameters, even our laboratory had found several toxic metals in fish from this same area.The presence of emerging pollutant in matrices such as seawater and fish from Gulf of Urabá have not been reported, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study. This work presents important aspects relating to sampling, monitoring and surveillance of seawater and several fish species caught in the area in order to determinate the content of emerging pollutant (triclosan, ibuprofen, diclofenac) using UPLC-QqQ/MS. In general, all three pharmaceuticals in different sampling sites were detected and total concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 1.54 μg/L in surface water. However, emerging pollutants content in fish muscle was not detected. In addition, a high variability in triclosan, ibuprofen and diclofenac concentrations according to the season of sampling was found. Regarding to seasonal variations, most emerging pollutant in the surface water had variation in levels both dry and wet season. Better removal was presented in the dry season, due to stronger irradiation and greater activity of microorganisms.

Among personal care products, quaternium-15 is prominently featured as a preservative in items such as shampoos, soaps, shaving products, and cosmetics. The widespread use of these products in people's daily routines contributes to quaternium-15 release into aquatic ecosystems. In this context, the primary aim of the study was to assess the physiological and cellular responses of the digestive gland and gills in Mytilus galloprovincialis to quaternium-15 exposure. Cell viability and the ability of digestive gland cells to regulate their volume were evaluated. Additionally, the expression of the genes involved in oxidative stress response was assessed to further substantiate the compound's harmful effects. Results indicated a significant decrease in both the viability of digestive gland cells and their RVD (regulatory volume decrease) capacity when exposed to a hypotonic solution. Furthermore, impairment of digestive gland cell function was corroborated by the modulation of oxidative stress-related gene expression, including SOD, Cat, as well as Hsp70 and CYP4Y1. Similar gene expression alterations were observed in the gills, reflecting impaired functionality in this vital organ as well. In summary, the outcomes of the study provide conclusive evidence of the toxicity of quaternium-15. Globally, the environmental occurrence of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) including pharmaceuticals (PhACs), personal care products (PCPs) and modern polar pesticides has raised ecological and human health awareness. However, as the developed world races against time to establish regulatory measures to mitigate their effects, developing nations including Kenya are lagging behind, partly due to unavailability of adequate data. In this work, a multi-residue analysis of 86 CECs was carried out on 198 surface water and 18 effluent samples collected at 24 sites across the River Athi basin area, Kenya, in both dry and rainy seasons. Overall, 57 CECs comprising 31 PhACs (0.4 ng L -1 -142 μg L -1 ), 6 PCPs (0.7-570 ng L -1 ) and 20 pesticides (0.3 ng L -1 -8.3 μg L -1 ) were detected. The maximum loads varied from 217 g day -1 (PCPs) to 46 kg day -1 (PhACs). Individually, carbamazepine, nevirapine, sulfamethoxazole and DEET were the most ubiquitous CECs, with detection frequencies (DF) higher than 80 %. The highest concentrations were observed at river sites that are heavily impacted by informal settlements, highlighting the critical role of slums in urban rivers pollution. At least 8 CECs including acetamiprid, alachlor, atrazine, diuron, nevirapine and paracetamol show potential risk to algae, Daphnia magna and fish, as exemplified by Risk Quotients (RQ) up to 174. Similarly, potential risk of antibiotic resistant bacteria development is evident (RQ up to 64), being driven by metronidazole, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Owing to their pervasive dispersion in the environment and their potential ramifications on both marine life and human health, microplastics (MPs) are of increasing concern. However, there is still a lack of research on the release of MPs from different land-based pathways like creeks, drainage outfalls, and conduits into coastal water systems in India. This study represents comprehensive research into the attribution of MPs in the estuarine system, specifically those emanating from wastewater sources in Panjim City, Goa, India. Urban wastewater collected from different locations in and around Panjim City exhibited values ranging from 79 ± 21 to 338 ± 7 MPs/L, with a prevalence of fibrous and black MP particles. The size range of the MPs at all sampling sites was 100-300 μm. Analysis by μ-FTIR revealed 35 distinct polymeric compositions in wastewater, with a dominance of polyacrylamide (PAM), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyamide (PA). Additionally, primary and secondary MPs were studied to unravel the contributions from land-based sources. This included the quantification of MPs in ten samples from personal care products (PCPs) and twenty samples from washing machine effluents (WMEs). MPs in PCPs ranged from 1.8 to 1554 MPs/g. Microfibres and fragments were predominant in WMEs (3986 to 4898 MPs/L). This study suggests a strong relation between polymers found in wastewater effluent and those present in PCPs and WMEs. Personal care products (PCPs) are organic compounds that are incorporated in several daily life products, such as shampoos, lotions, perfumes, cleaning products, air fresheners, etc. Due to their massive and continuous use and because they are not routinely monitored in the environment, these compounds are considered emerging contaminants. In fact, residues of PCPs are being discharged into the sewage system, reaching wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where most of these compounds are not completely degraded, being partially released into the environment via the final effluents and/or accumulating in the sewage sludges. Environmental sustainability is nowadays one of the main pillars of society and the application of circular economy models, promoting the waste valorisation, is increasingly encouraged. Therefore, irrigation with reclaimed wastewater or soil fertilization with sewage sludge/biosolids are interesting solutions. However, these practices raise concerns due to the potential risks associated to the presence of hazardous compounds, including PCPs. When applied to agricultural soils, PCPs present in these matrices can contaminate the soil or be taken up by crops. Crops can therefore become a route of exposure for humans and pose a risk to public health. However, the extent to which PCPs are taken up and bioaccumulated in crops is highly dependent on the physicochemical properties of the compounds, environmental variables, and the plant species. This issue has attracted the attention of scientists in recent years and the number of publications on this topic has rapidly increased, but a systematic review of these studies is lacking. Therefore, the present paper reviews the uptake, accumulation, and translocation of different classes of PCPs (biocides, parabens, synthetic musks, phthalates, UV-filters) following application of sewage sludge or reclaimed water under field and greenhouse conditions, but also in hydroponic systems. Emerging contaminants (ECs) are becoming more prevalent in estuaries and constitute a danger to both human health and ecosystems. These pollutants can infiltrate the ecosystem and spread throughout the food chain. Because of the diversified sources and extensive human activities, estuaries are particularly susceptible to increased pollution levels. A thorough review on recent ECs (platinum group elements, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, pesticides, siloxanes, liquid crystal monomers, cationic surfactant, antibiotic resistance genes, and microplastics) in estuaries, including their incidence, detection levels, and toxic effects, was performed. The inclusion of studies from different regions highlights the global nature of this issue, with each location having its unique set of contaminants. Background: Understanding the interaction mechanisms and the relevant binding constants between humic acids and emerging or regulated pollutants is of utmost importance in predicting their geochemical mobility, bioavailability, and degradation. Fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, equilibrium dialysis, and solid-phase extraction combined with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry have been employed to elucidate interactions of humic acids with organic micropollutants, especially pharmaceutical drugs. These methods demand large sample volumes, long equilibration times, and laborious extraction steps which may imply analytical errors. Monolithic high-performance affinity chromatography is an alternative and simpler method to investigate these interactions and determine the binding constants., Results: Polymer monoliths based on aminated glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate served to immobilize Cu(II) and then humic acid to produce monolithic affinity chromatography columns with humic acid as the active interaction phase. About 86.5 mg of humic acid was immobilized per gram of polymer. The columns enabled a comparison of the binding strength of humic acid with herbicides and emerging pollutants at 25 °C and pH 6.0 ± 0.1. Paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid, and salicylic acid did not retain. Among the compounds that interacted with humic acid, the order of increasing affinity, estimated by the global affinity constant (nK a ) or partition coefficient (K D ) was: caffeine < simazine < atrazine ∼ propazine < benzophenone. The nK a (L mol -1 ) values ranged from (4.9 ± 0.3) × 10 2 for caffeine to (1.9 ± 0.3) × 10 3 for benzophenone, whereas K D (L kg -1 ) varied from 14 ± 1 to 56 ± 8 for the same compounds., Significance and Novelty: To our knowledge, this is the first paper demonstrating the use of a monolithic platform to immobilize supramolecular structures of humic acids exploiting immobilized metal affinity to comparatively evaluate their affinity towards emerging pollutants exploiting the concepts of high-performance affinity chromatography. Numerous organic ingredients present in Personal care products (PCPs) are being detected in sewage which has a high potential to impact the environment. These compounds are called as Emerging contaminants (ECs) or Contaminants of emerging concern. However, the information on the source and occurrence of ECs present in PCPs is very minimal. Specifically, information on the persistence (P), bioaccumulation (B) and toxicity (T) is very scarce. The determination of PBT properties is a complex task given the magnitude of chemicals, thus it is necessary to have a tool to quickly screen and prioritize the most important compounds. Estimation Program Interface (EPI) Suite™ is one such tool authorized by United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) for screening purposes. In the present study, several organic compounds present in the PCPs viz. body lotion, sunscreens, moisturizers, hair dyes, and some hair care products were identified and their PBT property was estimated. The results from the study indicate that the order of increasing occurrence of PBT chemicals is sunscreens > moisturizers > body lotion > hair care products > hair dyes. The prioritized compounds were given rank 1 (maximum concern) to rank 4 (minimum concern). Personal care products contain chemicals that are considered of emerging concern in the Arctic. In this study, a selected group of personal care products was investigated in the snowpack on north-western Spitsbergen. We report a preliminary study on the spatial and seasonal distribution of 13 ingredients commonly found in personal care products, including fragrance materials, UV filters, BHT and BPA. Possible sources and deposition processes are discussed. Experimental analyses utilizing GC-MS/MS, were complemented with outputs from the HYSPLIT transport and dispersion model. The results reveal the presence of all selected compounds in the snow, both in proximity to and distant from the research village of Ny-Ålesund. For some of these chemicals this is the first time their presence is reported in snow in Svalbard. These chemicals show different partitioning behaviours between the particulate and dissolved phases, affecting their transport and deposition processes. Additionally, concentrations of certain compounds vary across different altitudes. It is observed the relevance of long-range atmospheric transport during winter at most sites, and, regardless of the proximity to human settlements, snow concentrations can be influenced by long-distance sources. Hormesis is a widely recognized and extensively studied phenomenon. However, few studies have described the quantitative characteristics of hormesis required for appropriate risk assessment. Although skin care product (SCP) mixtures and their active ingredients can induce the hormesis of Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 (Q67), the quantitative characteristics of time-dependent hormetic dose responses in SCPs have not yet been investigated. In this study, 28 SCP mixtures were tested for luminescence toxicity against Q67 after five exposure durations (0.25, 3, 6, 9, and 12 h). With increasing exposure duration, the concentration response curves (CRCs) were classified as constant monotonic nonlinear (S-shaped) for four SCPs, S- to hormetic (J-shaped) for 13 SCPs, and constant J-shaped for 11 SCPs. Of 140 CRCs, 98 were J-shaped. An increased frequency of SCPs inducing hormesis was observed. The toxicity (pEC 50 ) of the SCPs was independent of the exposure duration and product type. The maximum stimulatory effect (E min ) of the 12 SCPs increased with exposure duration. We proposed a modified parameter, the width of inhibition dose zone (WIDZ; EC 50 /EC 10 ), to depict the width of inhibition dose zone. The WIDZ of S-shaped CRCs were significantly larger than that of J-shaped CRCs. In addition, the characteristic parameters reported in the general literature were analyzed. The good linear relationship between EC 50 and the maximum stimulatory effective concentration (EC min ) indicated that toxicity may be transformed into stimulatory effects over exposure durations. The width of stimulation dose zone (WSDZ) and E min of the seven SCPs had the same increasing trends with increasing exposure duration. The combination of WIDZ with other characteristic parameters (e.g., zero effective concentration point, EC min , etc.) could better depict hormesis with low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute a large group of compounds that are water, stain, and oil repellent. Numerous sources contribute to the blood levels of PFAS in the European population. The main contributor for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is food, house dust, consumer products and personal care products (PCPs)., Objectives: The purpose of the present work is to calculate the dietary and dermal external exposure to PFOA, estimate the aggregated internal exposure from diet and PCPs using a PBPK model, and compare estimates with measured concentrations., Methods: Detailed information on diet and PCP use from the EuroMix study is combined with concentration data of PFOA in food and PCPs in a probabilistic exposure assessment. A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model (PBPK) was further refined by incorporating a dermal exposure pathway, and changes in the kidney and faecal excretion., Results: The aggregated internal exposure using the PBPK model shows that the major contributor to the internal exposure is diet for both males and females. The estimated internal exposure of PFOA for the EuroMix population was in the same range but lower than the measured blood concentrations using the lower bound (LB) external exposure estimates, showing that the LB estimates are underestimations. For seven females the internal exposure of PFOA were higher from PCPs than from diet., Conclusion: PCPs and diet contributed in the same range to the internal PFOA exposure for several women participating in EuroMix. Formaldehyde has been classified as carcinogenic to humans by International Agency for Research on Cancer and found in personal care (PC) products containing formaldehyde-donor (FD) preservatives. However, the cancer risk associated with the use of FD-containing PC products has not been well established. Our study provides the quantitative cancer risk assessment of formaldehyde in FD-containing PC products. The carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance ( 13 C-NMR) spectroscopy was used in this risk assessment to provide reliable exposure information to formaldehyde in PC products and aqueous solutions containing sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. The risk assessment was conducted using the margin of exposure (MOE) approach with benchmark doses (BMDs) for 10% effect. For hemolymphoreticular neoplasias in male rats, a BMD of 28.03 mg/kg/day and a BMD lower confidence limit (BMDL) of 2.52 mg/kg/day were calculated from available long-term animal experiments. The worst-case consumer exposure to formaldehyde from FD-containing PC products was 0.007 μg/kg/day. Comparing the consumer exposure with BMDL, the resulting MOE was 360,000 for the worst-case scenario. The consumer exposure to formaldehyde (0.007 μg/kg/day) from using FD-containing PC products represents less than 1.0 × 10 -6 % of background level endogenous formaldehyde (878-1310 mg/kg/day). Municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent is a primary source of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) to the marine environment, as most of these compounds are not fully removed during the treatment process. Continual discharge from WWTPs into coastal areas may act as a stressor by continually exposing organisms to a suite of PPCPs. To quantify organismal exposure to PPCP mixtures, we conducted a 12-week lab experiment that exposed Pacific oysters to effluent from two Oregon coastal WWTPs of different discharge capacities (permitted as <1 million gallons/day and >1 million gallons/day; or < or >3.785 million liters/day) at a dilution of 25 %. Composite samples of weekly collected effluent and a subset of freeze-dried oysters from experiment week 12 were analyzed for PPCPs. Though challenges with food availability inhibited our ability to confidently identify effects of the contaminants on growth and fitness, the experiment allowed us to examine uptake of contaminants from effluent into an estuarine bivalve of commercial importance. Parabens (PBs), a class of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are extensively used as additives in personal care products (PCPs); however, distinguishing between endogenous and exogenous contamination from PCPs in hair remains a challenge. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the levels, distribution patterns, impact factors, and sources of PBs in 119 human hair samples collected from Changchun, northeast China. The detection rates of methylparaben (MeP), propylparaben (PrP), and ethylparaben (EtP) in hair samples were found to be 100%. The concentration of PBs in hair followed the order of MeP (57.48 ng/g) > PrP (46.40 ng/g) > EtP (6.80 ng/g). The concentration of PrP in female hair was significantly higher (65.38 ng/g) than that observed in male hair (7.82 ng/g) (p < 0.05). The levels of excretion rates of MeP (ER MeP ) and excretion rates of PrP (ER PrP ) in the hair-dying samples (ER MeP : 17.89 ng/day; ER PrP : 14.15 ng/day) were found to be 2.52 and 2.40 times higher, respectively, compared to the non-hair-dying samples (ER MeP : 7.09 ng/day; ER PrP : 6.05 ng/day). However, the system exposure dosage (SED) results revealed that although hair dyes exhibited higher PBs, human exposure was found to be lower than certain PCPs. The results of the correlation analysis revealed that toner, face cream, body lotion, and hair conditioner were identified as the primary sources of PBs in male hair. Evidence supports unequal burdens of chemical exposures from personal care products (PCPs) among some groups, namely femme-identifying and racial and ethnic minorities. In this study, we implemented an online questionnaire to assess PCP purchasing and usage behaviors and perceptions of use among a sample of US adults recruited at a Northeastern university. We collected PCP use across seven product categories (hair, beauty, skincare, perfumes/colognes, feminine hygiene, oral care, other), and behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions of use and safety across sociodemographic factors to evaluate relationships between sociodemographic factors and the total number of products used within the prior 24-48 h using multivariable models. We also summarized participants' perceptions and attitudes. Among 591 adults (20.0% Asian American/Pacific Islander [AAPI], 5.9% Hispanic, 9.6% non-Hispanic Black [NHB], 54.6% non-Hispanic White [NHW], and 9.9% multiracial or other), the average number of PCPs used within the prior 24-48 h was 15.6 ± 7.7. PCP use was greater among females than males (19.0 vs. 7.9, P < 0.01) and varied by race and ethnicity among females. Relative to NHWs, AAPI females used fewer hair products (2.5 vs. 3.1) and more feminine hygiene products (1.5 vs. 1.1), NHB females used more hair products (3.8 vs. 3.1), perfumes (1.0 vs. 0.6), oral care (2.3 vs. 1.9), and feminine hygiene products (1.8 vs. 1.1), and multiracial or other females used more oral care (2.2 vs. 1.9) and feminine hygiene products (1.5 vs. 1.1) (P-values <0.05). Generally, study participants reported moderate concern about exposures and health effects from using PCPs, with few differences by gender, race, and ethnicity. These findings add to the extant literature on PCP use across sociodemographic characteristics. Background: Household cleaning and personal care products (HC&PCPs) are irreplaceable in most daily routines. However, data are sparse on chemical burns caused by HC&PCPs., Methods: We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) from 2012 to 2021 to characterize chemical burns caused by HC&PCPs as well as the most common causative categories of HC&PCPs responsible for chemical burns., Results: We found 2729 total emergency department (ED) visits due to chemical burn injuries within the years 2012-2021 due to HC&PCPs. Chemical burns disproportionally affect children ages four and under, accounting for 36.4% of all patients. Within this subpopulation, boys were more frequently affected by chemical burns and the eyes were the most affected area. The most common HC&PCPs involved in chemical burns in individuals ages one to four were laundry soaps and detergents (22.0%) and bleaches (21.3%)., Conclusion: Children ages four and under are disproportionately affected by chemical burns due to non-intentional exposure of HC&PCPs, with laundry detergents and bleaches being the most common causative agents. Personal care products have various organic ultraviolet filters (UV filters) in their composition to increase protection against ultraviolet radiation. Some of these products also contain insect repellents in their formulations. Consequently, these compounds reach freshwater ecosystems, exposing aquatic organisms to a cocktail of anthropogenic contaminants. In this study, the joint effects of two most frequently detected UV filters (Benzophenone - 3 (BP3) and Enzacamene (4-MBC)) and joint effects of BP3 combined with an insect repellent (N, N diethyl-3-methylbenzamide - DEET) were evaluated using life-history traits of the aquatic midge Chironomus riparius such as emergence rate, time to emergence and imagoes body weight. The results showed synergistic effects between BP3 and 4-MBC for C. riparius emergence rate. Regarding the effects of BP3 and DEET mixture, our analysis suggests synergism in the case of males but antagonism in the case of females' time to emergence. Our results imply that the effects of UV filters present in sediments within chemical mixtures are complex and that the evaluation of effects using different life-history traits can yield different patterns of responses. Toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at environmentally relevant concentrations has been received an increasing attention, and their influence on the bioavailability of personal care products has been seldom studied. Here, the toxicity of AgNPs in typical diatom Navicula sp. was explored, and their influence on the bioavailability of typical personal care products such as triclosan (TCS) and galaxolide (HHCB) was also investigated. The underlying toxicity mechanisms were explored using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics. Low concentrations of AgNPs (10 and 50 μg L -1 ) induced no observable responses of Navicula sp., in terms of growth rate, chlorophyll contents, and malondialdehyde accumulation. Furthermore, low doses of AgNPs could attenuate TCS or HHCB toxicity to Navicula sp., which was mainly attributed to the reduced oxidative stress. Metabolomics revealed that the disruption of DNA or RNA synthesis and instability of cytokinin-like substances may be also the reasons for the toxicity of AgNPs and TCS to Navicula sp. The damaged algal photosynthesis exposed to HHCB may be recovered by AgNPs, and the presence of signal chemicals (dehydrophytosphingosine and cardamonin) also showed a recovered algal growth. With the widespread production and usage, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be extensively found in the aquatic environment and co-exist with other pollutants for a prolonged time, leading to a more complex ecological risk in natural waters. In this work, the model freshwater algae Euglena sp. was selected to study the toxicity of AgNPs and explore their influences on the toxicity of two frequently detected personal care products, triclosan (TCS) and galaxolide (HHCB). The LC-MS targeted metabolomics was used to analyze the possible toxicity mechanism at the molecular level. Results showed that AgNPs was toxic to Euglena sp. upon 24 h exposure, but the toxicity decreased gradually as exposure times increased. AgNPs (<100 μg L -1 ) attenuated TCS and HHCB toxicity to Euglena sp., which could be attributed primarily to the decreased oxidative stress. Metabolomic analysis revealed that AgNPs induced a stress on algal defense system upon TCS exposure, but promoted the algal defense system upon HHCB exposure. Furthermore, DNA or RNA biosynthesis was accelerated in algae exposed to TCS or HHCB after the addition of AgNPs, implying that AgNPs may mitigate the genetic toxicity of TCS or HHCB in Euglena sp. The occurrence of PPCPs in aquatic environments and their potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms have raised worldwide concerns. To address this issue, a study was conducted to analyze 137 selected PPCPs in Korean surface waters, and an optimized risk-based prioritization was performed. The results revealed that 120 PPCPs were detected, with 98 quantified at concentrations ranging from few ng/L to 42,733 ng/L for metformin. The 95% upper confidence limit (UCL95) of the mean value of the measured environmental concentration (MEC) for Metformin was about eight times higher than the second highest compound, dimethyl phthalate, indicating that antidiabetic groups had the highest concentration among the therapeutic groups. An optimized risk-based prioritization was then assessed based on the multiplication of two indicators, the Frequency of Exceedance and the Extent of Exceedance of Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNECs), which can be calculated using the traditional risk quotient (RQ) approach. The study found that clotrimazole had the highest risk quotient value of 17.4, indicating a high risk to aquatic organisms, with seven and 13 compounds showing RQ values above 1 and 0.1, respectively. After considering the frequency of exceedance, clotrimazole still had the highest novel risk quotient (RQ f ) value of 17.4, with 99.6% of its MECs exceeding PNECs. However, the number of compounds with RQ f values above 1 decreased from seven to five, with cetirizine and flubendazole being excluded. Furthermore, only 10 compounds exhibited RQ f values above 0.1. The study also observed significant differences in the results between risk-based and exposure-based prioritization methods, with only five compounds, cetirizine, olmesartan, climbazole, sulfapyridine, and imidacloprid, identified in both methods. The concentration, distribution, and risk assessment of parabens were determined in the surface water of the Terengganu River, Malaysia. Target chemicals were extracted via solid-phase extraction, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Method optimization produced a high percentage recovery for methylparaben (MeP, 84.69 %), ethylparaben (EtP, 76.60 %), and propylparaben (PrP, 76.33 %). Results showed that higher concentrations were observed for MeP (3.60 μg/L) as compared with EtP (1.21 μg/L) and PrP (1.00 μg/L). Parabens are ubiquitously present in all sampling stations, with >99 % of detection. Salinity and conductivity were the major factors influencing the level of parabens in the surface water. Overall, we found no potential risk of parabens in the Terengganu River ecosystem due to low calculated risk assessment values (risk quotient < 1). Several chemicals with widespread consumer uses have been identified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), with a potential risk to humans. The occurrence in indoor dust and resulting human exposure have been reviewed for six groups of known and suspected EDCs, including phthalates and non-phthalate plasticizers, flame retardants, bisphenols, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), biocides and personal care product additives (PCPs). Some banned or restricted EDCs, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), bisphenol A (BPA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), are still widely detected in indoor dust in most countries, even as the predominating compounds of their group, but generally with decreasing trends. Meanwhile, alternatives that are also potential EDCs, such as bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), and PFAS precursors, such as fluorotelomer alcohols, have been detected in indoor dust with increasing frequencies and concentrations. Associations between some known and suspected EDCs, such as phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizers, FRs and BPs, in indoor dust and paired human samples indicate indoor dust as an important human exposure pathway. Prenatal exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) from personal care products may be associated with birth outcomes including preterm birth and low birth weight. There is limited research examining the role of personal care product use during pregnancy on birth outcomes. Our pilot study consisted of 164 participants in the Environmental Reproductive and Glucose Outcomes (ERGO) study (Boston, MA), with data on self-reported personal care product use at four study visits throughout pregnancy (product use in the 48 h before a study visit and hair product use in the month before a study visit). We used covariate-adjusted linear regression models to estimate differences in mean gestational age at delivery, birth length, and sex-specific birth weight-for-gestational age (BW-for-GA) Z-score based on personal care product use. Hair product use in the past month prior to certain study visits was associated with decreased mean sex-specific BW-for-GA Z-scores. Notably, hair oil use in the month prior to study visit 1 was associated with a lower mean BW-for-GA Z-score (V1: -0.71, 95% confidence interval: -1.12, -0.29) compared to non-use. Across all study visits (V1-V4), increased mean birth length was observed among nail polish users vs. non-users. In comparison, decreased mean birth length was observed among shave cream users vs. non-users. Liquid soap, shampoo, and conditioner use at certain study visits were significantly associated with higher mean birth length. Suggestive associations were observed across study visits for other products including hair gel/spray with BW-for-GA Z-score and liquid/bar soap with gestational age. Overall, use of a variety of personal care products throughout pregnancy was observed to be associated with our birth outcomes of interest, notably hair oil use during early pregnancy.
