Our previous study revealed that changes of the intracellular Cl - concentration ([Cl - ] i ) affected cell proliferation in cancer cells. However, the role of Cl - on cell migration and invasion in cancer cells remains unanalyzed. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate whether changes of [Cl - ] i affects cell migration and invasion of cancer cells. In human prostate cancer DU145 cells, cell migration and invasion were enhanced by culturing in the low Cl - medium (replacement of Cl - by NO 3 - ). We also found that DU145 cells in the low Cl - condition caused significant transient ERK1/2 activation followed by an increase of MMP-1 mRNA levels. Inhibition of ERK1/2 activation in the low Cl - condition reduced enhancement of MMP-1 mRNA levels and decreased cell migration and invasion. High urinary levels of dialkylphosphates (DAPs), which are common structures of organophosphate pesticides (OPs), have been associated with several adverse health outcomes in human biomonitoring studies. Previous studies have indicated that dietary OP exposure and ingestion of environmentally degraded DAP, which is inactive with acetylcholinesterase, can lead to an increase in urinary DAP levels in the general population. However, the specific food sources contributing to the intake of OPs and DAPs have not been identified. In this study, we analyzed the levels of OPs and preformed DAPs in various food items. DAP levels were markedly high in certain fruits, such as persimmon, apple juice, kiwi, and mandarin. In contrast, only moderate levels of OPs were detected in these foods. Furthermore, the levels of OPs and DAPs were positively associated with vegetables, whereas no such association was observed in fruits. Increased consumption of certain fruits presumably leads to a marked increase in urinary DAP levels in individuals despite limited exposure to OPs, resulting in reduced reliability of urinary DAPs as a marker of OP exposure. Therefore, the possible effects of dietary habits and the resulting intake of preformed DAPs should be considered when interpreting biomonitoring data of urinary DAPs. Additionally, DAP levels in most organic foods were much lower than those in conventional foods, suggesting that the reduction in urinary DAPs by organic diet intervention may be mainly attributed to the reduced intake of preformed DAPs rather than reduced exposure to OPs. Purpose: In Japan, the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in children has decreased vaccine-type (VT) pneumococcal infections caused by penicillin (PEN)-non-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae. PEN-non-susceptible strains have gradually emerged among non-vaccine types (NVT). In this study, we aim to investigate the pbp gene mutations and the characteristics of PEN-binding proteins (PBPs) that mediate PEN resistance in NVT strains., Materials and Methods: Pneumococcal 41 strains of NVT isolated from patients with invasive pneumococcal infection were randomly selected. Nucleotide sequences for pbp genes encoding PBP1A, PBP2X, and PBP2B were analyzed, and amino acid (AA) substitutions that contribute to β-lactam resistance were identified. In addition, the three-dimensional (3D) structure of abnormal PBPs in the resistant strain was compared with that of a reference R6 strain via homology modeling., Results: In PEN-non-susceptible NVT strains, Thr to Ala or Ser substitutions in the conserved AA motif (STMK) were important in PBP1A and PBP2X. In PBP2B, substitutions from Thr to Ala, adjacent to the SSN motif, and from Glu to Gly were essential. The 3D structure modeling indicated that AA substitutions are characterized by accumulation around the enzymatic active pocket in PBPs. Many AA substitutions detected throughout the PBP domains were not associated with resistance, except for AA substitutions in or adjacent to AA motifs. Objectives: The increased infectivity and transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) could cause significant human and economic damage. Hence, understanding their characteristics is crucial to control infection. We evaluated the environmental stability of the Wuhan strain and all VOCs (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Omicron BA.1, and Omicron BA.2 variants) on plastic and human skin surfaces and their disinfection efficacy., Methods: To evaluate environmental stability, residual virus titres on plastic and human skin surfaces were measured over time. Their survival time and half-life were calculated using regression analysis. The effectiveness of ethanol-based disinfectants at different concentrations was determined by in vitro and ex vivo evaluations., Results: On plastic and skin surfaces, the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron variants exhibited approximately two-fold longer survival times than the Wuhan strain; the Omicron variants had the longest survival time. The median survival times of the Wuhan strain and the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron (BA.1 and BA.2) variants on human skin surface were 8.6, 19.6, 19.1, 11.0, 16.8, 21.1, and 22.5 h, respectively. The in vitro evaluation showed that the Wuhan strain and the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron (BA.1 and BA.2) variants were completely inactivated within 15 s by 32.5%, 35%, 35%, 32.5%, 35%, 40%, and 40% ethanol, respectively. Introduction: Improved routine immunizations in Japan have led to a reduction in vaccine-preventable diseases. Due to changes in the vaccination program, current young adults received their second vaccination for measles and rubella at different times depending on their birth year, and most of them have not been vaccinated against varicella and mumps. This study investigated the effect of vaccine programs on the immunity of people in Japan., Methods: Immunoglobulin G antibody (IgG) titers against four viruses were determined by enzyme immunoassay in 795 students at a medical university. Titers for measles and rubella were compared according to the students' birth dates (Group 1: April 2, 1990-April 1, 2000; Group 2: April 2, 2000)., Results: The titers of students that satisfied the standard IgG values against measles, rubella, varicella, and mumps were 24.3%, 56.9%, 87.4%, and 47.2%, respectively. Measles and rubella titers were lower in group 2 (estimated mean period from last vaccination, 7.0 years) than group 1 (13.5 years) (p = 0.023 measles, p = 0.037 rubella), indicating attenuation of titers over time. Varicella and mumps antibody prevalence indicated that these infections were endemic, whereas rates of negative titers were higher than those for measles and rubella., Conclusions: IgG titers against viruses were affected by vaccination programs. Declining titers after vaccination should be monitored when the diseases are almost eliminated and boosting is absent. Antibody testing is meaningful for recommending vaccinations and for surveillance of waning immunity. Amyloid fibril deposits are a main source of pathology in neurodegenerative diseases. Normal proteins such as tau, alpha-synuclein, TDP-43 and others could form specific conformational fibrils called amyloid, which deposited in the brains of neurodegenerative diseases. Although the pathological roles of amyloids in cell death have been discussed a lot, their other functions have not been investigated well. Here, we studied the effect of amyloids on DNA transfection in vivo. We injected quantum dot labeled or non-labeled amyloid-preformed fibrils (PFFs) and a green fluorescent protein (EGFP) expression vector into organs including brain, testis, liver and calf muscle. GFP expression patterns were examined by immunohistochemistry and western blotting. At 24 h after injection, EGFP was predominantly expressed in the neurons in the cortex and the striatum, Leydig cells in testis, hepatocytes in the liver and muscle cells. EGFP expression was inhibited by an endocytosis inhibitor, sertraline in the brain and testis. The amyloid-PFFs potentiated Ca 2+ transients shown by calcium imaging and EGFP expression in the brain was blocked by Ca blocker, cilnidipine. Unmyelinated fibers in the central nervous system are known to exist in hippocampal mossy fibers, cerebellar parallel fibers and striatal projection fibers. Previously, we and others reported diffuse distribution of Nav1.2, a voltage-gated sodium channel α-subunit encoded by the SCN2A gene, on unmyelinated striatal projection fibers. Mutations in the SCN2A gene are associated with epilepsies and autism. In this study, we investigated the distribution of Nav1.2 on the unmyelinated fibers in the corpus callosum and stria terminalis by immunohistochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy analysis, suggesting that diffuse localization of Nav1.2 on mid-axonal regions can be a useful marker for unmyelinated fibers., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. and Japan Neuroscience Society. Introduction: Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is often fatal, requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. To evaluate the factors associated with IPD in adults, we retrospectively investigated its characteristics compared to pneumococcal pneumonia without confirmation of invasion (PP)., Methods: Patients >18 years with PP (n = 79) and IPD (n = 53) from whom Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated were enrolled from two hospitals between 2011 and 2017. Clinical backgrounds, blood test results at admission, initial antimicrobials administered, isolate serotypes, and outcomes were compared between the PP and IPD groups., Results: Patients with IPD exhibited higher mortality (28.3%) than those with PP (2.5%) (p<0.001), regardless of the type of antimicrobials first administered. The majority (80.0%) of fatal cases of IPD were due to vaccine serotypes. Almost all patients with PP (97.4%) and IPD (88.7%) had underlying disease. C-reactive protein (CRP) ≥17.0 mg/dL (odds ratio [OR], 7.1; 95% CI, 2.7-19.0; p<0.001), white blood cell counts <11.0 × 10 3 /μL (OR, 3.2; 95% CI, 1.3-8.4; p = 0.016), and platelet (PLT) counts <16.2 × 10 4 /μL (OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.1-7.4; p = 0.036) were significantly more common in IPD. Moreover, 89.5% of cases with both CRP ≥23.8 mg/dL and PLT <18.5 × 10 4 /μL were diagnosed with IPD., Conclusion: Laboratory blood test findings at admission, particularly high CRP and low PLT values, are useful early indicators of IPD in adults. Introduction: The assessment of the risk of virus transmission through papers, such as postcards, is important. However, the stability of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A virus (IAV) on different types of papers is currently unknown. Investigation of the survival time of these viruses on different types of papers will provide insights into their risk of long-distance transport by postal items., Methods: We evaluated the stability of SARS-CoV-2 and IAV, mixed with a culture medium, on the surface of postcards with various coatings, including plain paper (PP), inkjet paper (IP), and inkjet photo paper (IPP). The surface structure of each paper was microscopically assessed., Results: The surface structures of PP, IP, and IPP varied greatly depending on the presence or absence, and type, of coat layer, regardless of the base material. IP and IPP surfaces were less conducive to virus survival than PP surfaces, because of the difference in surface shapes. The survival times of SARS-CoV-2 on each paper were approximately 59.8 (PP), 6.5 (IP), and 9.8 h (IPP), and significantly longer than those of IAV (10.3, 1.8, and 3.3 h, respectively)., Conclusions: The risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission via paper, such as postcards, is significantly higher than that of IAV transmission. While PP, IP, and IPP have the same base material, their surface structures differ, which affects viral stability. The IP and IPP surfaces are less suitable for virus survival. Introduction: It is not uncommon for patients hospitalized with pneumonia to experience an early relapse. Here, we investigated the factors related to pneumonia recurrence in Japan., Purpose: We aimed to elucidate the factors related to early recurrence after completion of pneumonia treatment., Methods: We examined 696 patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and nursing and healthcare-associated pneumonia (NHCAP) who were admitted to our hospital between October 2010 and February 2018, excluding those who died during hospitalization. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the endpoint of recurrence within 30 days after the end of antibiotic treatment., Results: NHCAP, chronic lung disease and duration of antibiotic treatment were significant risk factors for recurrence of pneumonia within 30 days after antibiotic discontinuation. Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is a form of periodontitis that affects adolescents and has a significantly higher prevalence in individuals of African descent. AgP typically shows familial aggregation, suggesting a genetic predisposition. Young age, good health status, rapid attachment loss, and familial aggregation are the primary features of this disease. AgP has been closely linked to specific bacterial strains of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans . A. actinomycetemcomitans strains isolated from patients with AgP produce leukotoxin (LtxA), which specifically affects polymorphonuclear leukocytes in primates, especially humans. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and bioinformatics analyses revealed differences in the subgingival microbiota between patients with AgP and those with chronic periodontitis (ChP). The genera Atopobium and Prevotella show increased prevalences in AgP than in ChP. According to AgP susceptibility, several single nucleotide polymorphisms have been detected in different genes in individuals of African descent. Interleukin (IL)-1α and IL-1β genetic polymorphisms may be associated with the severity of both ChP and AgP. An elevated serum level of IL-17 produced by Th17 cells may be a characteristic of AgP. The pathological form of a-synuclein (a-syn) is transmitted through neural circuits in the brains of Parkinson disease (PD) patients and amplifies misfolded a-syn, further forming intracellular deposits. However, the details of a-syn pre-formed fibrils (PFFs) transmission in vivo have not been fully elucidated. By inoculating Quantum dots (QD)-labeled a-syn PFFs (QD-a-syn PFFs) into the unilateral striatum, we detected QD-a-syn PFFs in brain homogenates obtained from the ipsilateral and contralateral sides of the inoculated site and further obtained QD-a-syn PFFs enriched-particles with fluorescence-activated organelle sorting. Proteomic analysis suggested that QD-a-syn PFFs-enriched particles in the contralateral side were associated with component proteins of synapse. In contrast, QD-a-syn PFFs-enriched particles in the ipsilateral side were associated with proteins belonging to ER components. Immunostaining of brain sections confirmed that QD-a-syn PFFs in the contralateral side were co-localized with synaptic vesicle marker proteins in the cortex and striatum. Additionally, QD-a-syn PFFs in the ipsilateral side were more co-localized with ER marker proteins compared to the contralateral side. These results correspond to proteomic analysis. This study provides potential candidates for the subcellular localization of a-syn PFFs in vivo during the dissemination phase of seeds. Intradermal administration of naked DNA with a conventional needle syringe is a simple and inexpensive method to expose an encoded antigen to the dermal immune system. We aimed to enhance intradermal gene expression with a pyro-drive jet injector using pig skin, which is similar in structure and biomechanical properties to human skin. When Cy3-labeled plasmid (pCy3) was applied to pig skin with the jet injector, pCy3 was distributed preferentially in the intradermal tissue. Precise localization analysis revealed that pCy3 was also detected in the intracellular nucleus, and the frequency was substantially higher with the jet injector than with a needle syringe. When a luciferase expression plasmid (pLuc) was injected transdermally, the luciferase activity was 380-fold higher with the jet injector than with a needle syringe. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry analysis showed that the epidermis was positive for luciferase protein expression. These data indicate that the jet injector facilitates stable intradermal administration, resulting in more efficient gene expression compared to that with conventional syringe methods. Introduction: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a commensal bacterium of the human nasopharynx and a major causative pathogen of bacterial diseases worldwide. Pilus of S. pneumoniae is one of the virulence factors which enhance the adhesion to the host epitherial cells in the upper respiratory tract., Methods: We analyzed the serotype distribution and presence of pilus genes, rrgC and sipA, among 785 S. pneumoniae isolates from specimens of patients with invasive or non-invasive disease in a regional Japanese hospital between October 2014 and August 2018. We next performed multilocus sequence typing and penicillin-resistant genotyping for 86 isolates of serotype 35B., Results: Serotype 35B was the most frequent serotype which accounted for 11.0% of total isolates and had pilus genes at high rate (80.2%). Clonal complex (CC) 558 isolates accounted for 77.9% of serotype 35B and were highly positive for rrgC and gPRSP (98.5%). In contrast, all CC2755 isolates (19.8%) were rrgC-negative and gPISP., Conclusions: Our results suggest that CC558 may assist the prevalence of serotype 35B after the introduction of vaccines, as that clone has pili as adhesins in addition to non-susceptibility against penicillin. These results may be useful information for development of optimal preventive strategies. The onset establishment and maintenance of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion is an important phenomenon regulating pubertal development and reproduction. GnRH neurons as well as other neurons in the hypothalamus have high-energy demands and require a constant energy supply from their mitochondria machinery to maintain active functioning. However, the involvement of mitochondrial function in GnRH neurons is still unclear. In this study, we examined the role of NADH Dehydrogenase (Ubiquinone) Fe-S protein 4 (Ndufs4), a member of the mitochondrial complex 1, on GnRH neurons using Ndufs4-KO mice and Ndufs4-KO GT1-7 cells. Ndufs4 was highly expressed in GnRH neurons in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) and NPY/AgRP and POMC neurons in the arcuate (ARC) nucleus in WT mice. Conversely, there was a significant decrease in GnRH expression in MPOA and median eminence of Ndufs4-KO mice, followed by impaired peripheral endocrine system. In Ndufs4-KO GT1-7 cells, Gnrh1 expression was significantly decreased with or without stimulation with either kisspeptin or NGF, whereas, stimulation significantly increased Gnrh1 expression in control cells. In contrast, there was no difference in cell signaling activity including ERK and CREB as well as the expression of GPR54, TrkA and p75 NTR , suggesting that Ndufs4 is involved in the transcriptional regulation system for GnRH production. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a representative intestinal chronic inflammatory disease whose incidence is rapidly increasing worldwide. It was previously shown that some specific probiotics help to guard against UC. In this study, we analyzed the effect of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis JCM5805 (L. lactis), which has been put to practical use as a probiotic, on the pathogenesis of UC using a dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mouse model. Survival rate, length, and histopathological parameters of the colon were elucidated. Further, the concentrations of inflammatory cytokines in serum were measured. As a result, the oral administration of high-dose L. lactis showed significant decreases in survival rate and colon length. Histopathological analysis showed that a bleeding appearance was observed in the L. lactis group, and the histology scores in the L. lactis group were significantly higher than those in the normal saline group. Furthermore, the levels of interferon gamma, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interleukin-6 were significantly elevated in the L. lactis group. Many pathological proteins related to neurodegenerative diseases are misfolded, aggregating to form amyloid fibrils during pathogenesis. One of the pathological proteins, alpha-synuclein (α-syn), accumulates in the brains of Parkinson disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and multiple system atrophy (MSA), which are designated as synucleinopathies. Recently, structural properties of abnormal accumulated proteins are suggested to determine the disease phenotype. However, the biochemical and structural characteristics of those accumulated proteins are still poorly understood. We previously reported the sequence and seed-structure-dependent polymorphic fibrils of α-syn and the polymorphism was identified by proteinase K-resistant cores determined by mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. In this study, we applied this method to analyze α-syn aggregates of MSA and DLB. To perform MS analysis on proteinase K-resistant cores, we first performed amplification of α-syn aggregates by seeding reaction and protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) to obtain a sufficient amount of aggregates. Using SDS insoluble fraction of the disease brain, we successfully amplified enough α-syn aggregates for MS analysis. We differentiated between mouse and human α-syn aggregates by MS analysis on proteinase K-resistant cores of the aggregates before and after amplification. Background: Although J-waves have been known to be associated with vulnerability to ventricular fibrillation, their electrophysiologic mechanism remains to be elucidated. The papillary muscles (PMs) of the left ventricle (LV) have been recognized as the target site of radiofrequency ablation for ventricular arrhythmias. However, the relationship between PM hypertrophy and J-waves has not been investigated., Objective: To investigate the electrocardiographic characteristics, including the J-waves, in patients with solitary PM hypertrophy., Methods: We studied 101 patients with PM hypertrophy without LV hypertrophy (PMH group) and 159 age- and sex-matched control subjects (control group). The parameters of the 12-lead electrocardiogram and the echocardiogram were compared between the two groups., Results: Compared with the control group, the PMH group had significantly higher incidence (15% vs. 33%, p=0.001) and amplitude (0.17±0.06mV vs. 0.28±0.17mV, p<0.01) of J-waves; significantly longer QRS, QTc, and JTc intervals (p=0.0001, p<0.0001, and p<0.05, respectively); significantly greater Sokolow-Lyon index (p<0.001); and significantly greater LV wall thickness and LV mass index (p<0.0001 for each). Huntington Disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by expanded CAG repeats in the exon1 of huntingtin gene (HTT). The mutant HTT affects the transcriptional profile of neurons by disrupting the activities of transcriptional machinery and alters expression of many genes. In this study, we identified dysregulated non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in medium spiny neurons of 4-week-old HD model mouse. Also, we observed the intracellular localizations of Abhd11os and Neat1 ncRNAs by ViewRNA in situ hybridization, which could provide more precise detection, suggesting that it is a useful method to investigate the expression changes of genes with low expression levels., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. and Japan Neuroscience Society. Background: The optimal duration of antibiotic treatment has not been established for pneumonia patients. Some investigators reported procalcitonin (PCT)-guided antimicrobial stewardship reduces the duration of antibiotic use without increasing mortality in pneumonia patients., Material and Methods: We prospectively enrolled hospitalized community-acquired pneumonia or healthcare-associated pneumonia patients with PCT levels >0.20 ng/mL on admission, who were admitted between 2014 and 2017. PCT levels were measured on days 5, 8 and 11 and every 3 days thereafter if needed. Physicians were encouraged and strongly encouraged to discontinue antibiotics when PCT levels decreased below 0.20 ng/mL and 0.10 ng/mL, respectively. Those admitted between 2010 and 2014 were included in the study as historical controls. Primary endpoints were duration of antibiotic treatment and recurrence of pneumonia within 30 days after antibiotic discontinuation., Results: The PCT-guided and control groups consisted of 116 patients each. Background factors including pneumonia severity and PCT levels did not differ between the 2 groups. Median duration of antibiotic treatment was 8.0 and 11 days in the PCT-guided and control groups, respectively (P < 0.001). Multivariable regression analysis revealed that PCT-guided antibiotic discontinuation (partial regression coefficient [PRC] -1.9319, P < 0.001), PCT (PRC 0.1501, P = 0.0059) and albumin (PRC -1.4398, P = 0.0096) were significantly related to duration of antibiotic treatment. Pneumonia recurrence within 30 days after antibiotic discontinuation was not statistically different between the 2 groups (4.3% vs. 6.0%, P = 0.5541)., Conclusions: PCT-guided antibiotic discontinuation might be useful for shortening the duration of antibiotic treatment without increasing pneumonia recurrence., (Copyright © 2019 Southern Society for Clinical Investigation. Various jet injectors have been developed and used for the effective and efficient administration of drugs. Jet injections overcome the limitations of other drug delivery methods, such as ablation, iontophoresis, electroporation, sonophoresis, and microneedles, because jet injection is not limited by the diffusion rates of different drugs. However, controlling the jet pressure during drug delivery is difficult with most conventional jet injectors. Efficacy evaluation of such devices on laboratory animals is strongly required before initiating human clinical trials, but minimal research has been performed for the device developments. Therefore, we developed jet injector devices based on pyrotechnics using 2 types of explosives with different burning rates; we call these pyro-drive jet injectors. The liquid jet pressure profile suggests that the penetration depth and injection volume for soft materials and skin tissue are controllable. Lipids are major molecules for the function of organisms and are involved in the pathophysiology of various diseases. Fatty acids (FAs) signaling and their metabolism are some of the most important pathways in tumor development, as lipids serve as energetic sources during carcinogenesis. Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) facilitate FAs transport to different cell organelles, modulating their metabolism along with mediating other physiological activities. FABP7, brain-typed FABP, is thought to be an important molecule for cell proliferation in healthy as well as diseased organisms. Several studies on human tumors and tumor-derived cell lines put FABP7 in the center of tumorigenesis, and its high expression level has been reported to correlate with poor prognosis in different tumor types. Several types of FABP7-expressing tumors have shown an up-regulation of cell signaling activity, but molecular mechanisms of FABP7 involvement in tumorigenesis still remain elusive. Cylinder-type and disk-type sintered materials consisting of Presep PolyChelate, which is a commercially available chelating resin immobilizing carboxymethylated polyethyleneimine as a functional group, and particulate polyethylene as a thermoplastic binder were prepared using a polymer sintering technique. The sintered materials had a continuously porous structure. The sintering process at 130 °C for 20 min did not affect the ability of the chelating resin in the sintered materials; the selectivity of the sintered material was almost the same as that of the particulate chelating resin which was not sintered. The sintering materials could quantitatively extract 11 kinds of trace elements, namely Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Ti, V, and Zn, at pH 5.5. When the disk-type sintered material was used, the recoveries of these elements remained almost constant at a flow rate of at least 50 mL min -1 ; the extracted elements could be eluted using 10 mL of 3 mol L -1 nitric acid at a flow rate of 5 mL min -1 . Solid-phase extraction using the disk-type sintered material was applied to the separation and preconcentration of trace elements prior to their inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric determination. Background: Small-bore aspiration catheters (Aspiration Kit ® ) cause less pain than conventional trocar catheters in patients. The objective of this study was to examine the usefulness of these less invasive small-bore aspiration catheters for drainage of pneumothorax., Methods: Baseline characteristics and laboratory test data at admission of 70 patients who were admitted to and underwent drainage treatment for pneumothorax at our hospital between April 2011 and February 2017 were retrospectively reviewed based on their medical records. The primary endpoints were factors associated with drainage treatment failure, and baseline characteristics and laboratory test data were compared between those treated with a small-bore aspiration catheter and those treated with a trocar catheter., Results: The numbers of patients with anticoagulant use (P < 0.0001), ischemic stroke (P = 0.0063), and atrial fibrillation (P = 0.0410) were significantly different between the two groups. No significant intergroup differences were noted with respect to the length of hospitalization, drainage duration, subcutaneous emphysema, and treatment failure. Logistic regression analyses of baseline characteristics showed that the severity of pneumothorax, localization of pneumothorax, and recurrent pneumothorax were significantly associated with drainage treatment failure, but the type of drainage catheter was not significantly associated with treatment failure. [Conclusions] The results suggest that small-bore aspiration catheters, which cause less pain in patients, are potentially useful for pneumothorax drainage., (Copyright © 2018. Purpose: This study aimed to elucidate factors related to 30-day mortality of pneumonia occurring outside hospital by comprehensively analyzing data considered relevant to prognosis., Methods: Data considered relevant to prognosis were retrospectively examined from clinical charts and chest X-ray images of all patients with pneumonia occurring outside hospital admitted to our hospital from 2010 to 2016. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality., Results: Data were collected from 534 patients (317 community-acquired pneumonia and 217 nursing- and healthcare associated pneumonia patients; 338 men (63.3%); mean age, 76.2 years-old). Eighty-three patients (9.9%) died from pneumonia within 30 days from the date of admission. The numbers of patients with pneumonia severity index (PSI) classes of I/II/III/IV/V and age, dehydration, respiratory failure, orientation disturbance, pressure (A-DROP) scores of 0/1/2/3/4/5 were 29/66/127/229/83, and 71/107/187/132/30/7, respectively. Mean (standard deviation) body mass index (BMI), serum albumin, blood procalcitonin, white blood cell and C-reactive protein were 20.00 (4.12) kg/m 2 , 3.16 (0.60) g/dL, 3.69 (13.15) ng/mL, 11559.4 (5656.9)/mm 3 , and 10.92 (8.75) mg/dL, respectively. Chest X-ray images from 152 patients exhibited a pneumonia shadow over a quarter of total lung field. Logistic regression analysis revealed that PSI class or A-DROP score, BMI, serum albumin, and extent of pneumonia shadow were related to 30-day mortality. The bioactive peptides Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP) and Val-Pro-Pro (VPP) are believed to improve blood pressure and arterial function. To gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the action of these peptides, we investigated their effects upon autonomic neurotransmission and blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Both IPP and VPP caused a significant reduction in cutaneous arterial sympathetic nerve activity (CASNA) and reduced mean arterial pressure (MAP); however, both of these effects were eliminated following sub-diaphragmatic vagotomy. On the other hand, captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, reduced MAP without changing CASNA, and maintained this hypotensive effect following vagotomy. Moreover, the effects of IPP and VPP upon CASNA were observed following gastric administration but not by duodenal administration. In conventional transmission electron microscopy, specimens to be observed are placed in between the objective lens pole piece and therefore exposed to a strong magnetic field about 2 T. For a ferromagnetic specimen, magnetization of the specimen causes isotropic and anisotropic defocusing, deflection of the electron beam as well as deformation of the specimen, which all become more severe when the specimen tilted. Therefore electron tomography on a ferromagnetic crystalline specimen is highly challenging because tilt-series data sets must be acquired without changing the excitation condition of a specific diffraction spot. In this study, a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) tomography method without magnetizing a ferromagnetic specimen has been developed for three-dimensional (3D) visualization of dislocations in α-Fe, which is a typical ferromagnetic material. Magnetic-field-free environment down to 0.38 ± 0.07 mT at the specimen position is realized by demagnetizing the objective lens pole piece of a commercial STEM instrument. By using a spherical aberration corrector with the magnetic-field-free environment, an "aberration corrected Low-Mag STEM mode" with no objective lens field reaches a convergence semi angle ∼1 mrad and a spatial resolution ∼5 nm, and shows an adequate performance of imaging dislocations under a two-beam excitation condition for a low-index diffracted beam. The illumination condition for the aberration corrected Low-Mag STEM mode gives no overlap between the direct beam disk (spot) and neighboring diffraction disks. An electron channeling contrast imaging technique, in which an annular detector was located at a doughnut area between the direct beam and the neighboring diffracted beams, was effectively employed with the aberration corrected Low-Mag STEM mode to keep image intensity high enough even at large specimen-tilt angles. Background: The causative organism in cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) infection is usually diagnosed with the cultures from blood, removed leads, and/or infected pocket material. The cultured organism, however, is sometimes different among these samples., Methods: Two hundred sixty patients with CIED infection, who underwent lead extraction between April 2005 and December 2014, were analyzed. More than two blood culture sets, all the extracted leads, and swab culture of the pocket were sent to the laboratory for culture. Among the patients all of whose microbiological examinations were available, we analyzed the causative organism defined as the species detected in at least two different sites., Results: All the culture results were available in the 208 patients, showing 69 systemic infections (including 30 cases of infectious endocarditis) and 139 local infections. Blood culture, lead culture, and swab culture were positive in 57 (27%), 169 (81%), and 152 (73%), respectively. Staphylococcus aureus [37% including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) (12%)] and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS, 36%) were the most common causative organism, followed by non-staphylococci (23%), and poly-microbial infection (4%). The detection of S. aureus from pocket or removed leads rendered higher predictive value of a causative organism than that of CoNS. The detection of Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and mycobacteria indicated that it was most likely a causative organism. Gram-positive bacteria excluding Staphylococcus, such as Corynebacterium spp., tended to coexist as a benign organism., Conclusions: The causative organism is mostly S. aureus and CoNS. Continued ageing of the global population is expected to pose significant challenges to maintaining optimum lifelong health in individuals and populations. Oral health is an essential element of general health and quality of life throughout an individual's life course, yet it is often neglected in integrated approaches to general health promotion. Surveillance and monitoring systems are essential for developing oral health policy and strategy at both national and community levels. As major oral diseases, dental caries and periodontal diseases are core indicators for surveillance at every stage of life. In addition, oral mucosal lesions and masticatory function are essential indicators, especially in an ageing population. The assessment of risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption or dietary habits (e.g., sugar intake) is also important for oral disease prevention. Although surveillance is conducted through clinical examinations (normative assessments), this method is becoming more difficult to use because of high costs and human resource shortages, even in high-income countries. Alternative and less resource-demanding approaches, such as self-reported protocols, are therefore needed at the global level. The World Health Organization's (WHO) oral health surveillance and monitoring activities have evolved into the Oral Health STEPwise approach, which includes questionnaire surveys (Step 1) and clinical examinations (Step 2). Purpose: We aimed to identify prognostic clinicopathological factors and to create a nomogram able to predict overall survival (OS) in recurrent urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB) after radical cystectomy (RC)., Materials and Methods: Among 1,087 patients with UCB who had undergone RC at our 11 institutions between 1990 and 2010, 306 patients who subsequently developed distant metastasis or local recurrence or both were identified. Clinical data were collected with medical record review. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models addressed OS after recurrence. A nomogram predicting postrecurrence OS was constructed based on Cox proportional hazards model, without using postrecurrence factors (systemic chemotherapy and resection of metastasis). The performance of the nomogram was internally validated by assessing concordance index and calibration plots., Results: Of the 306 patients, 268 died during follow-up with a median survival of 7 months (95% CI: 5.8-8.5). Postrecurrence chemotherapy was administered in 119 patients (38.9%). Multivariable analysis identified 9 independent predictors for OS; period of time from RC to recurrence (time-to-recurrence), symptomatic recurrence, liver metastasis, hemoglobin level, serum alkaline phosphatase level, serum lactate dehydrogenase level, serum C-reactive protein level, postrecurrence chemotherapy, and resection of metastasis. A nomogram was formed with the following 5 variables to predict OS: time-to-recurrence, symptomatic recurrence, liver metastasis, albumin level, and alkaline phosphatase level. Concordance index rate was 0.75 (95% CI: 0.72-0.78) by internal validation using Bootstraps with 1,000 resamples. Calibration plots showed that the nomogram fitted well., Conclusions: We identified 9 clinicopathological factors as independent OS predictors in postcystectomy recurrence of UCB. We also created a validated nomogram with 5 variables that efficiently stratified those patients regardless of eligibility for chemotherapy. Pneumococcal vaccines have reduced the incidences of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections among children and adults, but a relative increase in the prevalence of non-vaccine serotypes has been reported. To follow the changing epidemiology of pneumococcal diseases, capsular serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on 534 pneumococcal isolates obtained from a hospital in Japan after routine immunization was launched, between October 2014 and May 2016. Serotype distributions and antimicrobial susceptibilities were evaluated among the total patient population, and were compared by age and sample groups and by serotype group, respectively. Serotypes targeted by the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) were identified in 14.6%, 44.5%, and 40.2% of the samples from the <5, 5-64, and ≥65 year age groups, respectively. The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine serotypes (PPSV23) were identified in 42.4%, 68.2%, and 63.1% of the samples, respectively; whereas non-PCV13 serotypes or non-PPSV serotypes (NVT) comprised 46.8% of all isolates. Among NVT, strain 35B was the most frequently isolated, followed by 15A, particularly in sputum samples collected from children <5 years old. Meanwhile, serotype 3, which is targeted by the PCV13 and PPSV23, was the most prevalent among patients aged ≥65 and 5-64 years. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that 88.9% and 81.0% of serotype 35B was non-susceptible to penicillin and meropenem, respectively, and 89.4% of 15A was non-susceptible to penicillin. Our data suggest rapid effects of pneumococcal vaccines and progression of serotype replacement. Besides invasive potential, the increased prevalence of non-vaccine serotypes with highly non-susceptible to penicillin was a concern. Background: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the prognostic value of sarcopenia (muscle loss) in patients with metastatic urothelial carcinoma (UC), in a comparison of several methods of computed tomography (CT)-based evaluation of sarcopenia., Patients and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 100 patients with metastatic UC who underwent first-line systemic chemotherapy between 2003 and 2014. Sarcopenia was assessed by the following CT-based methods: skeletal muscle index (SMI), total psoas area (TPA), axial and/or transversal psoas thickness at the level of the third lumbar vertebrae, and axial and/or transversal psoas thickness at the umbilicus level (U-TPT). All parameters were standardized by either height or height squared. Cutoff points were SMI: < 55 cm(2)/m(2) (men), < 39 cm(2)/m(2) (women); others: lowest sex-specific quartiles. Predictive values for cancer-specific survival (CSS) were assessed using the Cox proportional hazards regression model., Results: Sixty-four patients met the eligibility criterion for analysis: those who underwent CT scans within 30 days before chemotherapy. Of them, 52 (81%) died of UC during the follow-up, with a median survival time of 13 months. Univariate analysis associated decreased SMI, TPA, and U-TPT with poor CSS. Multivariate analysis together with other pretreatment clinicopathologic parameters showed decreased SMI to be an independent predictor of poor CSS., Conclusion: Evaluation using SMI showed sarcopenia was an independent predictor of poor prognosis for patients with metastatic UC who underwent first-line systemic chemotherapy. Rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacteria (RGM) are usually detected in blood cultures after 4-5 days of incubation, so it is important to differentiate RGM from contamination of commensal organisms on human skin. We report an unusual case of Mycobacterium mageritense bacteremia and infection of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator originally misidentified as Corynebacterium spp. or Nocardia spp. in gram-stained smears. 16S rRNA gene sequencing had utility in the definitive identification of isolates. Objective: To elucidate whether the lower ureteral lesion can predict subsequent intravesical recurrence (IVR) in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) who underwent radical nephroureterectomy (RNU)., Patients and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 186 consecutive patients with UTUC who underwent RNU at our institution between 1996 and 2013. Associations of various clinicopathological factors with subsequent IVR were assessed. Lower ureteral lesion was defined as the pathologically confirmed lowest carcinoma component within 5 cm from the lower end of the ureter. The log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards model were used for univariable and multivariable analysis, respectively., Results: Overall, 86 patients (46%) developed IVR during the follow-up, with a median follow-up period of 43 months (interquartile range: 17-79 mo). In all, 53 patients (28%) had lower ureteral lesions, and 34 (64%) of them developed IVR. Univariable analysis demonstrated that lower ureteral lesion was significantly associated with IVR, as well as tumor multifocality, lymphatic invasion, and history of bladder cancer. Multivariable analysis identified the lower ureteral lesion as a sole independent predictor of IVR (P = 0.0304, hazard ratio = 1.74)., Conclusions: Lower ureteral lesion was an independent predictor of IVR in patients with UTUC treated with RNU. Partial-thickness burn injury has the potential for reepithelialization and heals within 3weeks. If the wound is infected by bacteria before reepithelization, however, the depth of disruption increases and the lesion easily progresses to the full-thickness dermal layers. In the treatment of partial-thickness burn injury, it is important to prevent the wound area from bacterial infection with an antimicrobial dressing. Here, we have tested the antimicrobial properties of polymeric ultra-thin films composed of poly(lactic acid) (termed "PLA nanosheets"), which have high flexibility, adhesive strength and transparency, and silver sulfadiazine (AgSD), which exhibits antimicrobial efficacy. The AgSD-loaded nanosheet released Ag(+) for more than 3days, and exerted antimicrobial efficacy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in an in vitro Kirby-Bauer test. By contrast, a cell viability assay indicated that the dose of AgSD used in the PLA nanosheets did not show significant cytotoxicity toward fibroblasts. In vivo evaluation using a mouse model of infection in a partial-thickness burn wound demonstrated that the nanosheet significantly reduced the number of MRSA bacteria on the lesion (more than 10(5)-fold) and suppressed the inflammatory reaction, thereby preventing a protracted wound healing process., (Copyright © 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Objectives: Chewing efficiency may be evaluated using cohesive specimen, especially in elderly or dysphagic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate three two-coloured chewing gums for a colour-mixing ability test and to validate a new purpose built software (ViewGum©)., Methods: Dentate participants (dentate-group) and edentulous patients with mandibular two-implant overdentures (IOD-group) were recruited. First, the dentate-group chewed three different types of two-coloured gum (gum1-gum3) for 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 chewing cycles. Subsequently the number of chewing cycles with the highest intra- and inter-rater agreement was determined visually by applying a scale (SA) and opto-electronically (ViewGum©, Bland-Altman analysis). The ViewGum© software determines semi-automatically the variance of hue (VOH); inadequate mixing presents with larger VOH than complete mixing. Secondly, the dentate-group and the IOD-group were compared., Results: The dentate-group comprised 20 participants (10 female, 30.3±6.7 years); the IOD-group 15 participants (10 female, 74.6±8.3 years). Intra-rater and inter-rater agreement (SA) was very high at 20 chewing cycles (95.00-98.75%). Gums 1-3 showed different colour-mixing characteristics as a function of chewing cycles, gum1 showed a logarithmic association; gum2 and gum3 demonstrated more linear behaviours. However, the number of chewing cycles could be predicted in all specimens from VOH (all p<0.0001, mixed linear regression models). Both analyses proved discriminative to the dental state., Conclusion: ViewGum© proved to be a reliable and discriminative tool to opto-electronically assess chewing efficiency, given an elastic specimen is chewed for 20 cycles and could be recommended for the evaluation of chewing efficiency in a clinical and research setting., Clinical Significance: Chewing is a complex function of the oro-facial structures and the central nervous system. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is the most common motor neuron disease in adults, is a neurodegenerative disease that involves the selective and systematic death of upper and lower motor neurons. In addition to the motor neuron death, altered metabolic functions, such as dyslipidemia, have also been reported for ALS patients; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ALS-associated P56S-vesicle-associated membrane proteinassociated protein B (VAPB), P56S-VAPB on 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation and on the expression of differentiation-associated genes and unfolded protein response (UPR)-related genes. Experiments with 3T3-L1 cells transfected with wild-type (Wt)-VAPB and P56S-VAPB expression vectors showed that the size of lipid droplets was markedly smaller in P56S-VAPB-expressing cells, although fat accumulated intracellularly. In P56S-VAPB-expressing cells, increased the expression of PPARγ2, aP2, and C/EBPα, the genes deeply involved in adipocyte differentiation, was not observed. Furthermore, the expression levels of the UPR-related ATF4 and CHOP genes were found to be enhanced in the P56S-VAPB-expressing cells. From these results, P56S-VAPB was found to suppress adipocyte differentiation by promoting the activation of the ATF4-CHOP pathway. Given previous reports showing increased ATF4 and CHOP expression levels in neurons of ALS patients, results from the present study suggest that dyslipidemia is caused by enhanced ATF4-CHOP pathway in the adipose tissue of ALS patients., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) detoxifies toxic aldehydes, e.g. acetaldehyde in cigarette smoke; however, the interactive effects between smoking status and the ALDH2 genotype on coronary artery disease (CAD) have not been reported. We investigated the effects of smoking status and the ALDH2 genotype, and assessed their interactive and combined effects on the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) or stable angina (SA), including 221 MI and 175 SA subjects and 473 age- and sex-matched controls without CAD. Current-smoking and the ALDH2*2 allele additively increased the risk of MI (adjusted odds ratio 4.54, 95% confidence interval 2.25-9.15), although this combination was not associated with the risk of SA. This combination also increased the peak creatine kinase (CK) level synergistically in the acute MI (AMI) subjects. Moreover, current-smoking was found to be a significant risk factor for an increased peak CK level in the ALDH2*2 allele carriers (B 2220.2IU/L, p=0.008), but not the non-carriers. Additionally, a synergistic effect of this combination on the triglycerides levels was also found in the AMI subjects. We developed a mechanical tissue model containing a cell with cytoskeletal filaments inside to investigate how tissue deformation is reflected in the deformation of a cell and its internal cytoskeletal filaments. Tissue that assumes a collagen gel construct was depicted as an isotropic linear elastic material, and the cell was modeled as an assembly of discrete elements including a cell membrane, nuclear envelope, and cytoskeletal filaments. Mechanical behaviors were calculated based on the minimum energy principle. The results demonstrated the effects of the type of tissue deformation on deformations of cytoskeletal filaments. The distribution of strains of cytoskeletal filaments was skewed toward compression when a tissue was stretched, toward stretch when the tissue was compressed, and almost normal when the tissue was sheared. The results also addressed the dependency of deformations of a cell and cytoskeletal filaments on the ratio of the Young's modulus of a tissue to that of a cell. Upon tissue stretching, cell strain increased and the distribution of strains of cytoskeletal filaments broadened on both stretch and compression sides with an increase in the Young's modulus ratio. This suggested that the manner of tissue deformation and the tissue/cell Young's modulus ratio are reflected in the distribution pattern of strains of cytoskeletal filaments. A 77-year-old Japanese man with a history of surgical treatment of chronic subdural hemorrhage was hospitalized for drainage of a subdural abscess and brain abscess in the right occipital area. Pus obtained from both the subdural abscess and brain abscess grew vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) (minimum inhibitory concentration = 4 μg/mL), which was confirmed by population analysis. The SCCmec type and sequence type were subsequently identified as IV and ST8, respectively. The VISA strains were both sensitive to levofloxacin, clindamycin, minocycline, and linezolid. The patient was successfully treated with linezolid and discharged on day 51 after admission. Background: Low placental fatty acid (FA) transport during the embryonic period has been suggested to result in fetal developmental disorders and various adult metabolic diseases, but the molecular mechanism by which FAs are transported through the placental unit remains largely unknown., Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the distribution and functional relevance of FA binding protein (FABP), a cellular chaperone of FAs, in the mouse placenta., Methods: We clarified the localization of FABPs and sought to examine their function in placental FA transport through the phenotypic analysis of Fabp3-knockout mice., Results: Four FABPs (FABP3, FABP4, FABP5, and FABP7) were expressed with spatial heterogeneity in the placenta, and FABP3 was dominantly localized to the trophoblast cells. In placentas from the Fabp3-knockout mice (both sexes), the transport coefficients for linoleic acid (LA) were significantly reduced compared with those from wild-type mice by 25% and 44% at embryonic day (E) 15.5 and E18.5, respectively, whereas those for α-linolenic acid (ALA) were reduced by 19% and 17%, respectively. The accumulation of LA (18% and 27% at E15.5 and E18.5) and ALA (16% at E15.5) was also significantly less in the Fabp3-knockout fetuses than in wild-type fetuses. In contrast, transport and accumulation of palmitic acid (PA) were unaffected and glucose uptake significantly increased by 23% in the gene-ablated mice compared with wild-type mice at E18.5. Incorporation of LA (51% and 52% at 1 and 60 min, respectively) and ALA (23% at 60 min), but not PA, was significantly less in FABP3-knockdown BeWo cells than in controls, whereas glucose uptake was significantly upregulated by 51%, 50%, 31%, and 33% at 1, 20, 40, and 60 min, respectively., Conclusions: Collectively FABP3 regulates n-3 (ω-3) and n-6 (ω-6) polyunsaturated FA transport in trophoblasts and plays a pivotal role in fetal development., (© 2014 American Society for Nutrition.)

Kupffer cells (KCs) are involved in the progression of liver diseases such as hepatitis and liver cancer. Several members of the fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are expressed by tissue macrophages, and FABP7 is localized only in KCs. To clarify the role of FABP7 in the regulation of KC function, we evaluated pathological changes of Fabp7 knockout mice during carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury. During liver injury in Fabp7 knockout mice, serum liver enzymes were increased, cytokine expression (tumor necrosis factor-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and transforming growth factor-β) was decreased in the liver, and the number of KCs in the liver necrotic area was significantly decreased. Interestingly, in the FABP7-deficient KCs, phagocytosis of apoptotic cells was impaired, and expression of the scavenger receptor CD36 was markedly decreased. In chronic liver injury, Fabp7 knockout mice showed less fibrogenic response to carbon tetrachloride compared with wild-type mice. Taken together, FABP7 is involved in the liver injury process through its regulation of KC phagocytic activity and cytokine production. Background: Recent studies showed that J-waves are associated with vulnerability to ventricular fibrillation. Recently we reported the association between false tendons (FTs) and J-waves in a retrospective study., Methods and Results: We prospectively studied 50 young healthy men (mean age 24.6±2.7 years). FTs were detected echocardiographically and classified based on their points of attachment as type 1 (longitudinal type), type 2 (diagonal type), and type 3 (transverse type). J-waves were defined as terminal QRS notching or slurring with ≥0.1 mV. The filtered QRS duration (fQRSd), RMS40, and LAS40 were measured on signal-averaged ECGs. FTs were detected in 37 of the 50 subjects (74%). The incidence of J-waves was significantly higher in subjects with type 1 or type 2 FTs than those with no- or type 3 FTs (61% vs. 26%, p<0.05). The leads with J-waves were closely associated with the location of the FT. While no late potential was recorded in any study subjects, fQRSd and LAS40 were significantly longer in subjects with type 1 or type 2 FTs (p<0.05). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that only the existence of FTs (type 1 or 2) was an independent predictor of the presence of J-waves., Conclusions: Our results suggest that FTs were related to the genesis of J-waves with conduction delay., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
