The electricity indebtedness of Ghanaian schools is increasing due to the high cost of electricity in the country. As a result, the utility companies frequently disconnect the schools from the grid to force them to settle their debts. Meanwhile, the school can reduce its bills from rooftop solar PV systems, yet little attention is given. The study uses the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) as a case to assess the technical feasibility, economic viability, and potential benefits of implementing rooftop solar PV electricity in Ghanaian schools. Google Earth software was used to estimate the structure's rooftop surface areas to determine the potential energy harvest from a PV plant.In contrast, the economic analysis uses the net present value (NPV), internal rate of returns (IRR), discounted payback period (DPP) and profitability index (IP) to appraise the intended project. The results show that using rooftops of school structures can provide the needed electricity for local consumption and export excess to the grid for sales. The NPV, IRR, IP, and DPP recorded from the study are million GHS 15.15, 21%, 1.6 and 8 years, respectively. The findings highlight the potential of rooftop solar PV systems to meet educational institutions' electricity demand, exploring the possibility of exporting excess to the national grid for revenue (income generator), reducing operational costs, and contributing to a sustainable energy transition.

Introduction: Savannah Region witnessed a decline in measles-rubella (MR) vaccination coverage prior to the measles outbreak in 2022. This study aimed to assess contributory factors of the low routine MR vaccination coverage and proffer recommendations to improve vaccination uptake. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two districts (Bole and Central Gonja) of Savannah Region from December 2022 to June 2023. Caregivers of children 18–59 months were randomly selected and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed to assess predictors of MR vaccination status. Results: Children of caregivers with inadequate knowledge of MR vaccination (AOR = 0.58, 95 %CI: 0.47–0.72), travelled more than five km to access health services (AOR = 0.48, 95 %CI: 0.39–0.59), described health workers attitude as poor (AOR = 0.44, 95 %CI: 0.26–0.74), and those who sought treatment for adverse events following immunization (AEFI) from the pharmacy (AOR = 0.65, 95 %CI: 0.51–0.84) were less likely to complete MR vaccination. On the contrary, children of female sex (AOR = 1.27, 95 %CI: 1.05–1.53), aged 24–59 month (AOR = 2.56, 95 %CI: 1.05–1.53), caregivers with primary or secondary education (AOR = 1.43, 95 %CI: 1.11–1.84; and AOR = 2.23, 95 %CI: 1.64–3.03 respectively), and those who did not experience rescheduling of vaccination sessions (AOR = 1.61, 95 % CI: 1.25–2.01) were more likely to complete routine MR vaccination schedule. Conclusion: Inadequate caregiver knowledge, poor geographical access to health services, poor healthcare worker attitude, and non-institutional management of AEFI significantly contributed to the low MR vaccination uptake in the Savannah Region. Adopting tailored approaches to addressing these factors could improve vaccination coverage.

The spot of frontier market economies in the global financial arena continues to be significant for many market participants because of their size, diversification advantage, and interconnectedness. Financial market innovations, globalization and pandemics have made it even more urgent to explore their dynamics. This paper focuses on analysing the risks associated with investing in frontier West African monetary zone bonds by appropriately modelling them in relation to cultural, administrative/political, geographic, economic and financial indicators that are specific to these countries, primarily due to their locations and interlinkages. This study employed the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model to investigate the asymmetric effects of different economic factors on sovereign bond yields in Ghana and Nigeria from July 2014 to September 2022 with 99 observations. Period selection allows researchers to unravel the complexities of market behaviour, investor sentiment, and policy effectiveness in the face of economic turmoil and uncertainty. The results provide valuable insights into how these factors affect bond yields differently in the two countries.

Watershed ecosystems are important for the provision of multiple ecosystem services (ES) that are critical to human welfare. Few studies particularly in the tropics assess the multiple ecosystem services, economic value, and effect of land use change on economic value. This paper provides evidence of the quantitative. economic value and effect of land use change on the economic value of watershed ESs from Barekese and Owabi in Ghana. Geospatial analysis and the stated preference method were used for the study. Primary and secondary data were collected from households, institutions, and other sources to quantify and estimate ecosystem services. The geospatial analysis showed that forest degradation and deforestation have increased over the last three decades in the watershed with settlements and cropland being the major land use changes. The two watersheds provide many ecosystem services, including provisioning services (water, fuelwood, bushmeat, fish), regulating services (carbon sequestration, water supply, water purification, soil fertility), and cultural services (ecotourism). An aggregated economic value for the ESs of GH₵ 707.701 x 106 ($144.428 x 106) was estimated for the two watersheds. For the different sites, the economic value for the Barekese and Owabi watersheds were $110.645 x 106 ($6609.06/ha/yr) and $33.783 x 106 ($5857.76/ha/yr) respectively. Our analysis showed that conversion of forest to other land uses resulted in a significant reduction in the value of ecosystem services. Conversion of the watershed to Tree Crop, Food Crop, Grassland or Settlement could reduce the economic value of ESs by 4%–80 %. The study demonstrates that ecosystem services assessment could provide important information for conservation and development policies related to watershed management in the tropics. To ensure ecosystem service supply, the risks of land use change should be considered in watershed conservation strategies including land use zoning and adaptive management systems.

The rapid expansion of the aviation industry has significantly increased energy consumption within airport terminals. This study introduces an advanced ARIMAX model to forecast electricity consumption at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Ghana by incorporating weather conditions and air passenger numbers. By analysing data from 2019 to 2022, including lockdown periods, the model demonstrates superior predictive accuracy, evidenced by an RMSE of 55,914 kWh, a MAPE of 4.22 %, and an R-squared value of 0.899. Key determinants of energy consumption identified include air passengers and temperature, highlighting their substantial impact on energy use. The ARIMAX model's accuracy underscores its potential for enhancing energy management practices at airports. By integrating variables such as air passenger traffic and weather conditions, the model refines energy demand predictions, supporting more efficient energy use and operational planning. The ARIMAX model proves to be a valuable tool for forecasting energy consumption at KIA, aiding in energy management and sustainability efforts.

Approximately 60 % of men globally over the age of 50 experience a diminished quality of life as a result of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Consequently, while the national direct cost for managing BPH is hovering around $4 billion in the USA, the individual direct cost for medications is estimated at $1536 and $425 annually for the USA and Ghana, respectively. Due to the chemotherapeutic drawbacks in BPH treatment, a concerted effort is urgently needed to find new chemotypes with novel mechanism of action to combat the disease. This research aims to employ computational techniques to identify new compounds from ethno-pharmacological plants from Ghana for treating BPH. Altogether, 250 natural products from Croton membranaceus, Heliotropium angiospermum, Annona muricata, Serenoa repens, Cissus quadrangularis, Tribulus terrestrials, Vernonia amagdalina and Momordica foetida from Ghanaian origin were virtually screened against 5alpha reductase 2 (5aR2), a primary drug target implicated in the parthenogenesis of BPH. Out of the 254 compounds docked, three compounds (A, B and C) showed a binding energy lower than testosterone (-10.4 kcal/mol), the main substrate of the target and comparative to finasteride (-11.7 kcal/mol), one of the drugs currently used for treating the disease. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations studies revealed Leu224 to be critical for ligand binding and complex stability. The pharmacological and physicochemical profiles show the compounds to possess good pharmacodynamics with negligible toxicities. While the compounds A, C, G, H, I and J were, respectively, predicted to treat prostate disorders with Pa (0.909, 0.221, 0.743, 0.729, 0.978, and 0.443) and Pi (0.003, 0.132, 0.005,0.005, 0.002, 0.016), that of A, B, D, G, H, I, and J were found to be associated with the inhibition of 5alpha reductase with Pa (0.840, 0.102, 0.097, 0.377, 0.123, 0.909, and 0.201) and Pi (0.001, 0.075, 0.089, 0.003, 0.036, 0.001, and 0.004), respectively. These lead-like compounds possessing plausible chemotherapeutic moieties with putative 5aR2 inhibitory potential need further experimental validation via in vitro studies.

This research investigated the effects of emotional intelligence, learning styles, and science and technology self-efficacy on academic performance. Ninety-one preservice science teachers enrolled in the Bachelor of Science degree programs (Science) in education at the University of Ghana for the academic year 2020–2021 participated in this research. The researchers collected data using grade point averages, the Science and Technology Self-Efficacy scale, and the Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test scale. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, independent samples t-test, Pearson product moment correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. The key findings in this research were that the study underscores the pivotal role of STEM field self-efficacy, especially for males, emphasizes the significance of nurturing confidence within the STEM field, and reveals a relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance among preservice science teachers. This study adds to the literature examining factors influencing preservice science teachers' academic performance.

This study analyses the factors driving CO2 emissions from electricity generation in Ghana from 1990 to 2020. Employing Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) and Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) techniques, the research decomposes electricity generation into different factors and assesses their impact on CO2 emissions, considering both short and long-run effects. The LMDI analysis reveals that the total CO2 emissions from electricity generation amount to 3.33%, with all factors contributing positively in each subperiod. Notably, fossil fuel intensity, production, and transformation factors exhibit substantial contributions of about 1.16%, 0.49%, and 0.48%, respectively. Contrastingly, the ARDL results highlight that only electricity intensity and production factors significantly increase CO2 emissions by about 0.20% and 0.09% (0.38% and 0.10%) in the short-run (long-run), while other factors contribute to a reduction in electricity generation emissions. Overall, we conclude that electricity intensity and production factors are the primary drivers of CO2 emissions from electricity generation in Ghana. Nevertheless, effective measures to address all decomposition factors is crucial for effective mitigation of electricity generation CO2 emissions.

abstract: Obesity is a significant risk factor for several chronic diseases. However, pre-menopausal females are protected against high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and its adverse effects. The pregnane X receptor (PXR, NR1I2), a xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptor, promotes short-term obesity-associated liver disease only in male mice but not in females. Therefore, the current study investigated the metabolic and pathophysiological effects of a long-term 52-week HFD in female wild-type (WT) and PXR-KO mice and characterized the PXR-dependent molecular pathways involved. After 52 weeks of HFD ingestion, the body and liver weights and several markers of hepatotoxicity were significantly higher in WT mice than in their PXR-KO counterparts. The HFD-induced liver injury in WT female mice was also associated with upregulation of the hepatic mRNA levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (Pparg), its target genes, fat-specific protein 27 (Fsp27), and the liver-specific Fsp27b involved in lipid accumulation, apoptosis, and inflammation. Notably, PXR-KO mice displayed elevated hepatic Cyp2a5 (anti-obesity gene), aldo-keto reductase 1b7 (Akr1b7), glutathione-S-transferase M3 (Gstm3) (antioxidant gene), and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) levels, contributing to protection against long-term HFD-induced obesity and inflammation. RNA sequencing analysis revealed a general blunting of the transcriptomic response to HFD in PXR-KO compared to WT mice. Pathway enrichment analysis demonstrated enrichment by HFD for several pathways, including oxidative stress and redox pathway, cholesterol biosynthesis, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis in WT but not PXR-KO mice. In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms by which PXR deficiency protects against long-term HFD-induced severe obesity and its adverse effects in female mice.

In order to improve on system reliability, utilities conduct contingency scenarios to determine the impact of component outages to the network. It is usually challenging to conduct this analysis due to the complex grid structure. However, the huge consequences of an equipment outage on the grid and the connected loads are compelling enough for researchers to find ways to mitigate these events. Several blackouts have occurred in various parts of the Southern Interconnected Grid (SIG) of Cameroon due to the transient state of the power system. The most recent was the blackout that kept a greater part of the country's political capital, Yaounde, for several days with no electricity. The paper analyses 44 single line (N-1) contingency scenarios in the SIG using ETAP in order to evaluate the impact of line outage events on grid stability. A combined performance index was calculated from the bus voltage security index (PIV/Vsp), real power flow index (PIΔP), reactive power flow index (PIΔQ) and the branch overloading security index (PIS/Ssp). The results showed that the Mangombe - Oyomabang line outage (scenario 22) was the most severe with the load flow failing to converge, followed by the Oyomabang - Ngousso line 1 (scenario 36) with combined performance indices of 992.6191 and 79.74415 respectively. Other scenarios showed overloaded lines, overloaded transformers, high power losses and under/over bus voltages. This study has identified lines with high vulnerability and should be used by utility operators to enhance the reliability of the transmission network and minimize its susceptibility to cascaded power outages.

The analysis of factors that influence the occurrence of roadway crashes within a specified locality have historically been reliant on the assessment of physical infrastructure, historical crash frequency, environmental factors and driver characteristics. The consensus over the years has been drawn to the idea that human factors, specifically regarding driving behaviors, account for the majority of crash outcomes on our roadways. With the emergence of connected vehicle data in the last few years, the capacity to analyze real time driving behavior has become a possibility for safety analysts. Driving volatility has emerged as a valuable proxy for driving behavior and indicator of safety. In this study, evidence of the spatial relationship between driving volatility and historical crash hotspots is uncovered. Utilizing an entropy-based analysis, this study discovered generally strong positive spatial relationships between locations of volatile driving events and historical crashes, with R2 values ranging from 0.015 to 0.970 and a mean of 0.612 for hard accelerations, and 0.048 to 0.996 and a mean of 0.678 for hard decelerations. Including temporal context presented insights showing that the relationships are significant for over 60 % of the coverage area usually between the hours of 7 am to 7 pm, with average R2 values of 0.594 for hard accelerations, and 0.629 for hard decelerations.

Background/aim: Patients with co-morbid hypertension and diabetes may take several medicines. Although multiple medications may aid in the management of their condition, they also raise the likelihood of drug interactions and unfavorable drug reactions. This study therefore evaluated polypharmacy and its associated factors in patients with co-morbid hypertension and diabetes. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study with data collection spanning a 3-months period. Patients attending their review clinic in a municipal hospital in Ghana were interviewed with a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, prescription medicines, therapeutic lifestyle changes, blood pressure management and fasting blood glucose. Polypharmacy was defined as the use of five or more medicines in a single day. Results: Of the 338 patients with co-morbid hypertension and diabetes, (18 %, n = 61) were men and (82 %, n = 277) were women. Most of the study participants (40.2 %, n = 136) were between 55 and 64 years. Polypharmacy (≥5 medications) was observed in (64.8 %, n = 219) of the participants and being male [cOR = 2.29, 95 % CI (1.18 – 4.42), p = 0.014] and living in a rural setting [cOR = 2.46, 95 % CI (1.13 - 5.34), p = 0.023] were significantly associated with more than the two-fold increased risk of having polypharmacy compared to being female and living in an urban setting respectively. Most patients were on biguanides (89.1 %, n = 301), angiotensin receptor blockers (68.6 %, n = 232), calcium channel blockers (66.6 %, n = 225) and sulphonylurease (53.8 %, n = 182). Conclusion: Polypharmacy is common in patients with co-morbid hypertension and diabetes, and is associated with sex, marital status, and residential status. Healthcare providers must carefully consider these associated factors when prescribing or modifying treatment plans for their patients.

This study examines the concept of demand response in household appliance use. Its primary aim is to explore the factors influencing electricity consumption behavior and employ K-means clustering to group households, estimating daily electricity consumption patterns. This understanding is essential for the development of effective demand response strategies within the Greater Accra Region, Ghana. The research leveraged metrics, such as the Silhouette Score and principal component analysis to ensure the quality of the clustering process, effectively combining qualitative and quantitative data. Insights were enhanced by incorporating consumer behavior surveys to better comprehend appliance use trends and optimize demand response strategies. The findings emphasize differences in voltage, intensity, power consumption, and smart meter data among different household clusters. Notably, clusters 1 and 3 emerge as high energy consumers, particularly in water and cold appliances. These insights offer valuable guidance for targeted energy management and optimization strategies. This study underscores the significance of using consumer behavior insights to enhance and optimize demand response programs, providing essential guidance to energy stakeholders, particularly in Ghana, for the efficient optimization of electricity consumption and the successful implementation of demand response initiatives.

This article describes a dataset of community perspectives on living conditions and disaster risk management in Khan Road, a non-serviced informal settlement, located in Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. The data were collected by local community researchers via a structured questionnaire of 159 informal dwellers conducted between August and September 2022, using mobile phones via KoboToolbox. The dataset was analysed using exploratory data analysis (EDA) techniques. This household survey is part of a research project aiming to develop an evidence base of opportunities, risks and vulnerabilities related to housing construction and resource management in incremental upgrading of informal settlements in South Africa. This dataset can be used by local practitioners and policymakers involved in decision-making for informal settlement upgrading and help them prioritise resources and upgrading interventions based on what informal dwellers need. Furthermore, this cleaned dataset could support the analysis of further South African data guiding the development of digital platforms as a real-time resource management tool or guide the enhancement of existing theoretical frameworks in the field of participatory design and co-production used by academic scholars.

MobiScout is an iOS application designed to monitor users' driving habits and physiological conditions on the road. This app offers a cost-effective, next-generation solution for data collection and analysis in naturalistic driving studies. MobiScout captures real-time data, encompassing physiological information, using sensors on mobile phones, smartwatches, and Bluetooth-enabled OBD equipment. The software records data such as speed, braking, pulse rate, and acceleration, while the phone's camera captures both the interior and exterior views of the car. Data can either be streamed to cloud storage in real-time or stored locally in areas without WIFI. The acquired data serves to enhance our understanding of typical traffic behavior, driver performance, and surrounding conditions.

Most of the previous research focused on the effects of public support for SMEs' innovative activities dealt with the effects of financial incentives, while non-financial support was considered a kind of “black box”. This research therefore aims to fill this gap by exploring the role non-financial support systems play in triggering SMEs' collaborations and innovativeness in Europe. We show that non-financial support (framework condition) significantly facilitates collaboration and innovation of European SMEs, by using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and 216 sampled datasets of the 27 EU countries from 2012 to 2020 European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS). Our expectation was confirmed about the SMEs' collaboration significant effects on their innovative activities, which subsequently translate into innovative outputs. We also found indirect significant effect of the non-financial support on SME's innovation output. This study serves several practical implications and contributes to the ongoing debate on the effects of non-financial support for cooperation and innovation activities of European SMEs.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. There are significant racial disparities in the rates of preterm delivery in the United States, with Black individuals at disproportionately higher risk than their White counterparts. Although low-dose aspirin is currently under investigation for reducing the rates of preterm delivery, limited data are available on how the use of low-dose aspirin might affect racial and ethnic disparities in the rates of preterm delivery. OBJECTIVE: Our group and others have shown that low-dose aspirin decreases spontaneous preterm delivery in low-risk parturients. This study aimed to examine whether the relationship between low-dose aspirin and the risk of spontaneous preterm delivery is modified by race and ethnicity. STUDY DESIGN: This was a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial examining low-dose aspirin for preeclampsia prevention in low-risk nulliparous individuals. The parent trial defined low risk as the absence of preexisting hypertension or other medical comorbidities. Participants received 60-mg aspirin or placebo between 13 and 25 weeks of gestation. The present study presents a retrospect into environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis (EKC). The EKC debate is dated over four decade long and worthy of empirical scrutiny. To this end, the present study leverages on over 200 previous studies curated from SCOPUS and Web of science (WOS) core collection database respectively. The present study also presented both literature schematic on the evolution, trends, gaps, and future directions on the EKC debate. This paper endeavors to enhance our comprehension of the inherent paradoxes present in sustainability discourses by delving into the fundamental assumptions underlying the Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). By conducting a bibliometric analysis, we aim to shed light on the factors contributing to the prominence of thematic keywords within sustainability discourses. This study seeks to provide valuable insights into these dynamics and implications on sustainability debates. Key empirical findings outlines predominant and influential studies and journal outlets on the theme under consideration. The present study bibliometric analysis displays that Ozturk i. with 13 published papers 3153 citations and a link strength of 2, Dogan e. Had 7 papers with 2190 citations with no link strength, Shahbaz. B 7 papers 1347 citations and 1 link strength, Saboori b.7 papers 677 citations 1 strength link and Liu y. 6 papers 582 citations with no link strength. From a policy dimension, the present bibliometric study presents valuable depth on the evolution and development of the EKC phenomenon by identifying's the extant literature leaders, action-step for future studies on environmental sustainability without compromise on economic growth as the EKC theme express the tradeoff between economic growth and environmental degradation. Further insights are rendered in the concluding section.

The importance of parameters such as material type, compacting pressure, particle size, and their interactions in the manufacturing of charred briquette fuel for industrial and domestic use cannot be overemphasized because they have a considerable impact on briquette performance. In investigating the aforementioned phenomena, the Box–Behnken​ Response Surface Design and ANOVA were used to analyze how briquette material type, particle size, compacting pressure and their interactions significantly influence the mechanical and combustion properties of charred briquettes made from palm kernel shells, corn cobs, sawdust, and rice husk. All three factors namely material type, compacting pressure and particle size, with all possible interactions are significant determinants of the relax densities and impact resistance of all the briquette samples. Meanwhile, water resistance of the sampled briquettes was significantly different for material type, pressure level as well as particle size, however, all factor interactions were insignificantly affected with palm kernel shell and rice husk recording the highest and lowest water resistance property. With regards to the combustion properties, apart from material type which significantly affected heating rate and specific fuel consumption, pressure and particle size together with all interactions did not have any significant influence on heating rate and specific fuel consumption. Finally, the findings provide a new perspective to investigate other agricultural residues which will diversify the energy resources of the country.

The long non‐coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical roles in various biological processes and are associated with many diseases. Functional annotation of lncRNAs in diseases attracts great attention in understanding their etiology. However, the traditional co-expression-based analysis usually produces a significant number of false positive function assignments. It is thus crucial to develop a new approach to obtain lower false discovery rate for functional annotation of lncRNAs. Here, a novel strategy termed DAnet which combining disease associations with cis-regulatory network between lncRNAs and neighboring protein-coding genes was developed, and the performance of DAnet was systematically compared with that of the traditional differential expression-based approach. Based on a gold standard analysis of the experimentally validated lncRNAs, the proposed strategy was found to perform better in identifying the experimentally validated lncRNAs compared with the other method. Moreover, the majority of biological pathways (40%∼100%) identified by DAnet were reported to be associated with the studied diseases. In sum, the DAnet is expected to be used to identify the function of specific lncRNAs in a particular disease or multiple diseases.

In acknowledgment of the devastating consequences of environmental deterioration, the Mediterranean members are committed to adopt the 2015 treaty action plans of the Paris Climate Agreement (COP21) as carbon dioxide emission (CO2) are on the rise in the Mediterranean region, which seems to be a serious challenge to our world’s environment. To this end, our study examined the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on environmental degradation for the Mediterranean members for the period between 1995 to 2016. However, variables such as, financial development, economic growth, renewable energy and fossil fuel were further examined by the use cross-sectional-Panel pooled Auto Regressive Distributed Lag methodology, Augmented Mean Group (AMG) and Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test was used for causality analysis. The co-integration results from Westerlund (2007) shows a long-run equilibrium relationship between highlighted variables. The empirical result revealed a negative relation between FDI and CO2 indicating pollutant Hallo Hypothesis (PHH). Moreover, income and its square show an inverted U-Shaped curve indicating environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. Both financial development and renewable energy indicated an adverse association with CO2 emission whereas fossil fuel had a positive relationship with emissions. However, there was a feedback causality among income and carbon emission as well as financial development and carbon emission. Furthermore, we observe that FDI and carbon emission, renewable energy and carbon emission, as well as fossil fuel and carbon emission were found to have one-way causal relationship. Overall, the study suggests some policy prescriptions including the implementation of conservation initiatives and the establishment of clean energy regulation and strategies for the investigated bloc.

Photovoltaic (PV) module degradation rate depends on technology, manufacturer and environmental conditions. This makes it challenging to transfer the results of degradation analysis from one country to another. Thus, the increase in deployment of PV systems in Ghana makes degradation analysis a necessity. This study quantified the degradation rates and predicted the lifetime of 16 PV systems of different module technologies and age groups installed in different locations under outdoor conditions in Ghana to provide a better understanding of the long-term behavior of installed PV systems in Ghana. It presented the frequency distribution of output power degradation of different PV module technologies, estimated their power degradation rates, and predicted and compared the lifetime of these technologies. The country was grouped into three strata and 104 PV modules of different technologies which were older than 5 years were selected from 16 PV systems in these strata, depending on availability and accessibility. The electrical parameters of the PV modules were measured by current–voltage (IV) tracing. The results revealed that crystalline silicon modules degraded less than amorphous silicon. The median and mean power degradation rates of, monocrystalline silicon were 1.23%/year and 1.37%/year respectively, polycrystalline silicon were 1.35%/year and 1.44%/year respectively and, amorphous silicon were 1.65%/year and 1.67%/year respectively. Overall, the median and mean predicted lifetime of the PV systems (crystalline and amorphous silicon) were 14 year and 16 years respectively but the median lifetime of both monocrystalline and polycrystalline modules was 16 years while that of amorphous was 13 years. It was predicted that 50% of PV modules studied would fail before 15 years, indicating that most of the PV modules in Ghana are unlikely to operate for the 25 years warranty, signifying less power output and shorter lifetime of the modules which could discourage the widespread implementation of PV systems in Ghana.

Due to the ultra-low permeability of unconventional reservoirs, transient state prevails for a considerable period. Despite this, fracture interference can cause an apparent no-flow boundary. Consequently, the Duong's model, which was developed for transient-state period, yields unreliable estimates during the late-time period. In this paper, the Duong's model is modified to account for boundary effects caused by fracture interference and/or unstimulated reservoir regions that serve as no-flow boundaries. Specifically, an empirical correction function, which assumes an exponential decline, has been used as a “modifier” to extend the Duong's model to boundary-dominated flow period. The correction function ensures that during boundary-dominated flow period, an exponential-decline behaviour dominates. The proposed rate-decline model encompasses a gamma function, which converges at large times. Results show that a fractured-well production behaviour is characterised by a decaying power-law during early-time period and tends to exponential decline during late-time period. The results also suggest that although the conventional Duong's model gives good estimates during the transient-state period, it yields optimistic estimates during the boundary-dominated flow period. The proposed model gives a good match and estimates not only in the transient-state period, but also in the boundary-dominated flow period. A major advantage of the proposed model is that it converges to estimated ultimate recovery at large times without imposing any rate and time limits. A good agreement of the estimated ultimate recovery with analytical and semi-analytical models was obtained. Also, results suggest that the proposed model gives conservative estimates. The proposed model will be useful for analysing and predicting both the early- and late-time production performance of a multi-fractured well producing from an unconventional reservoir.

Electric aviation has become an important area of research following the rapid growth of the aviation industry, which directly corresponds to significant growth in aviation-related emissions. Despite the promising emission reduction potential of electric airplanes, several technological and regulatory challenges restrict the realization of this new regime of sustainable air transport. Significant advancements in enabling technologies, new certification standards, and infrastructural development are required to make commercial air transport viable. This review paper surveys scholarly and industrial literature to identify the main technological areas of electric aviation, including battery technology, electric machine technology, airframe, and propulsion technologies; where the technology currently stands, their future projections, and their challenges. Several electric aircraft design concepts, prototypes, and existing products are also surveyed in this study to identify the constraints of technological advancement and regulatory frameworks that could impede the realization and time to market the proposed electric airplanes.

Effectiveness of plant improvement programs, especially in perennial crops like coffee, may be improved by knowing the level of genetic variation which exist within a breeding population coupled with the knowledge of estimates of genetic parameters for key agronomic traits. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate C. canephora clones for growth (stem diameter, number of laterals and span) and yield traits; estimate genetic parameters of these traits; and determine the phenotypic and genetic associations between these traits to guide future crop improvement efforts. The productivity of 56 coffee clones was assessed from 2012 to 2020 in a clonal experiment planted in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Each plot consisted of eight plants spaced at 2 × 3 m at the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana. There were significant (p < 0.001) differences among clones for all the traits assessed. Broad sense heritability was low-to-moderate for all the traits evaluated with the highest (0.34) observed for cumulative yield (CY). Cumulative yield was genetically correlated (p < 0.001) with span and number of laterals (NOL). For the growth traits, NOL was the most strongly associated with CY (rg = 0.49, p < 0.001). The results revealed that selection based on early years’ yield (MY1) could be as effective as selection based on CY (rg = 0.87, p < 0.001). Our findings indicate that there is significant genetic variation among the test clones for the parameters assessed and presents a good opportunity for future variety development.

There is an unmet need to unearth alternative treatment options for malaria, wherein this quest is more pressing in recent times due to high morbidity and mortality data arising mostly from the endemic countries coupled with partial diversion of attention from the disease in view of the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic. Available therapeutic options for malaria have been severely threatened with the emergence of resistance to almost all the antimalarial drugs by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite in humans, which is a worrying situation. Artemisinin combination therapies (ACT) that have so far been the mainstay of malaria have encountered resistance by malaria parasite in South East Asia, which is regarded as a notorious ground zero for the emergence of resistance to antimalarial drugs. This review analyzes a few key druggable targets for the parasite and the potential of specific inhibitors to mitigate the emerging antimalarial drug resistance problem by providing a concise assessment of the essential proteins of the malaria parasite that could serve as targets. Moreover, this work provides a summary of the advances made in malaria parasite biology and the potential to leverage these findings for antimalarial drug production.

Summary: Background: Early death after cancer surgery is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared with in high-income countries, yet the impact of facility characteristics on early postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hospital infrastructure, resource availability, and processes on early outcomes after cancer surgery worldwide. Methods: A multimethods analysis was performed as part of the GlobalSurg 3 study—a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of patients who had surgery for breast, colorectal, or gastric cancer. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality and 30-day major complication rates. Potentially beneficial hospital facilities were identified by variable selection to select those associated with 30-day mortality. Adjusted outcomes were determined using generalised estimating equations to account for patient characteristics and country-income group, with population stratification by hospital. Findings: Between April 1, 2018, and April 23, 2019, facility-level data were collected for 9685 patients across 238 hospitals in 66 countries (91 hospitals in 20 high-income countries; 57 hospitals in 19 upper-middle-income countries; and 90 hospitals in 27 low-income to lower-middle-income countries). The availability of five hospital facilities was inversely associated with mortality: ultrasound, CT scanner, critical care unit, opioid analgesia, and oncologist. After adjustment for case-mix and country income group, hospitals with three or fewer of these facilities (62 hospitals, 1294 patients) had higher mortality compared with those with four or five (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 3·85 [95% CI 2·58–5·75]; p

Unregulated harvest of tree bark for medicinal purposes has led to overexploitation and extinction of some valuable tree species. The study assessed bark recovery rates of four medicinal tree species and determined their regenerative abilities, stress shoot production and susceptibility to wood borers. A total of 192 trees of Bombax buonopozense, Mangifera indica, Azadirachta indica and Blighia sapida were randomly selected outside protected forests in the Moist Semi-deciduous (MSD) and Guinea Savannah (GS) ecological zones of Ghana. The trees were harvested using three harvesting intensities, 25%, 50%, and 75% bark removal. Edge and sheet re-growth, stress shoot production and wood borer attack were recorded for each tree in twelfth months. Our results show that the bark of B. buonopozense (29.4% at MSD and 21.4% at GS), M. indica (22.3% at MSD and 16.1% at GS) and A. indica (13.5% at MSD and 12.8% at GS) showed higher regeneration percentage compared to B. sapida (3.8% at MSD and 3.7% at GS), while stress shoot growth percentage was limited to only B. buonopozense (4.7% at MSD and 25% at GS). Though no tree died during the study period, borer attack was recorded for all the species except A. indica. We recommend that forest managers should allow minimum harvesting of B. sapida as they showed slow recovery, while rotation period for repeated harvest can also be prescribed for B. buonopozense and M. indica. Moreover, the coppicing ability of B. buonopozense needs to be examined since it produced a higher number of stress shoots.

The River Subin, which serves as a source of direct drinking water downstream, flows through the Metropolis of Kumasi in Ghana, making it vulnerable to pollution due to human activities. In this study, we assessed the heavy metals content in the sediment of the Subin River as well as the physicochemical properties and microbial load in the river. Water and sediments were sampled from Race course upstream and downstream, Asafo, and Abinkyi upstream and downstream, Kaase, Asokwa and Wood village with a sampling distance of 100 m. Index of Geoaccumulation (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), contamination degree (CD) and pollution load index (PLI) were used to assess the level of heavy metal enrichment and contamination in the sediments of River Subin. Analysis showed that temperature of the river ranged between 31.23 to 31.40 °C, pH ranged between 6.62 and 7.52, conductivity ranged between 1.16 and 4.67 µS/cm, total hardness ranged from 0.65 to 3.82 mg/L, Ca ranged from 0.26 to 1.22 mg/L, alkalinity ranged from 324 to 711 mg/L, Mg from 0.24 to 3.35 mg/L and Cl ranged from 56.76 to 99. 30 mg/L. The microbial load assessment indicated that the River Subin is highly polluted by E. coli, Faecal Enterococci, Total coliform and faecal coliform, which generally increased as the river flows downstream since more solid waste from domestic and industrial effluents enter the river. Igeo data suggested that the river was highly contaminated by Ag and Cd and moderately polluted by Pb and Co. The CF, CD and PLI, results showed high levels of Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Co, and Zn, indicating a progressive deterioration of water quality at the various sites. Our results suggest that the River Subin is highly polluted and thus, urgent management strategies are needed to mitigate further deterioration of the river.

Introduction: The World Health Organization has identified the need for a non-sputum-based test capable of detecting active tuberculosis (TB) as a priority. The plasma kynurenine-to-tryptophan (K/T) ratio, largely mediated by activity of the enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase, may have potential as a suitable biomarker for active TB. Method: We evaluated a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in comparison to mass spectrometry for measuring the K/T ratio. We also used ELISA to determine the K/T ratio in plasma from patients with active TB compared to latently infected controls, with and without HIV. Results: The two methods showed good agreement, with a mean bias of 0.01 (limit of agreement from −0.06 to 0.10). Using ELISA, it was found that HIV-infected patients with active TB disease had higher K/T ratios than those without TB (median, 0.101 [interquartile range (IQR), 0.091–0.140] versus 0.061 [IQR, 0.034–0.077], P

The current COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered the quantity and composition of waste generated on the African continent. This new phenomenon, coupled with the indiscriminate disposal of used personal protective equipment (PPEs), poses serious challenges to local authorities, most of whom have limited experience or lack the strategy to handle this occurrence. These PPEs, like the face masks, are made up of polymeric materials that are liquid resistant and remain for a long time in the environment after discard. Thus, they are considered as a significant source of plastic pollution in the environment. Notwithstanding the environmental challenges associated with COVID-19, if Africa is to be ready for the expected growth in waste generation and variation in waste composition in the coming century as predicted by the African waste management outlook report in 2018, she has to have a renewed focus and seize the unique opportunities that COVID-19 presents. The continent has to indulge in introspection of its shortfalls in managing waste and consciously make efforts that would ensure social and technological innovation and investment in services and infrastructure in the waste and secondary resources sector than never before seen in Africa. This approach would help the continent achieve its waste management vision of extending regular and reliable waste collection services to all while valorizing waste generated. This critical review paper reveals the silver lining in the dark cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic by highlighting some of the noticeable environmental challenges in Africa due to the current pandemic and elucidating the rare opportunities that African countries can harness to improve the waste management sector.

Background: In bringing healthcare closer to individuals in their natural environment, Ghana rolled out the Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) with a corresponding increase in the training and deployment of qualified community health officers (CHOs) to provide primary healthcare at community level. Objectives: Since primary healthcare thrives on the active engagement/participation of key stakeholders within the community and coupled with the increasing adoption of technologies in health, the study examines how technological platforms like social media are incorporated in healthcare delivery at the community level regarding the trends, institutional framework, opportunities, and challenges. Design: Using the case study approach, a semi-structured interview is used to engage six community health nurses of four CHPS zones in the Cape Coast Metropolis of Ghana. Results: A thematic analysis of the data reveals that WhatsApp is highly useful for informing users either on one-on-one basis or as a participatory group platform. However, since there is no policy backing the use of social media for health delivery at this level, the practice tends to be at the discretion of CHOs, thus exposing such initiatives to some ethical concerns. Conclusions: With no formal policy in existence, the CHPS initiative are missing out on the inherent opportunities provided by social media to deepen primary healthcare at the community level. Accordingly, the study recommends formal policy guidelines, as well as on-the-job training and incorporating social media skills in the curriculum for community health training institutions to respond to the demands and trends of this contemporary era.

Electricity prosumption is gaining ground due to price reduction in solar PV systems. The presence of prosumers on the low voltage grid is said to compromise power quality in the grid. Many researchers have reported over-voltage and high power loss in the prosumer grid. Power utility regulators ensure that operators work within voltage and power loss benchmarks. To meet voltage and power loss benchmarks, operators use tap changers, capacitor banks, and static volt-ampere-reaction (VAr) compensators. Finding the optimal placement of such compensators on the low voltage prosumer grid to minimise voltage deviation and line loss is always a problem. Their allocation is not a trivial task when the objective is to provide a comprehensive benefit to the power system. This paper aims to analyse the suitability of using reactive power support (RPS) and solar photovoltaics to achieve active voltage management, minimise power loss, and reduce transformer capacity in prosumer grids PV using the python optimisation algorithm. The results show that solar photovoltaic injection and reactive power compensation positively and negatively impact the prosumer grid. Operating the grid with PV and RPS injections with specific transformers capacities does not create over-voltage and high-power loss problems. The results obtained from the scenarios show that operating the grid as a consumer grid has high power loss than operating it with PV injection and RPS.

While several studies have been conducted on the impacts of logging on forest recovery in tropical forests, most of these studies have largely focused on short term forest recovery and without perspectives on how different logging intensities could influence the nature and extent of forest recovery in the long term. This study therefore aims to explore how varying site conditions, resulting from the creation of different disturbance types (skid trails and felling gaps) following selective logging at two logging intensities influenced long-term floristic composition eighteen years after logging. The study was conducted in the permanent sample plots located in a 134-ha compartment in the Pra-Anum Forest Reserve. Data collection was conducted on 160 recording plots distributed on three disturbance sites and an unlogged area, within two blocks of logging intensity of 26.32 m3/ha and 52.63 m3/ha (representing the volume of trees harvested per hectare). Results showed that the main skid trail had significantly lower species abundance and richness than the other disturbance types and the unlogged area. There was also a significant difference in species spatial distribution across all the four sites. These distribution patterns revealed differences in plant dominance at disturbance gradients, which indicate their success at competing for available resources within their niche space. Furthermore, the number of species belonging to particular ecological guilds classified from the different skid trails and unlogged areas as well logging intensities showed no significant variation. However, most of the species sampled across the disturbance regimes and unlogged area were observed to be shade tolerant. Logging disturbance and logging intensity did not influence the distribution of trees of national conservation importance (based on tree distribution, ecology, local abundance, interaction with ecosystem parameters and economic importance which have been used as basis conservation prioritization). However, disturbance type and higher logging intensities favoured tree species of minimal timber and national conservation importance, relative to the unlogged area. Given the increasing demand for timber products for both domestic and international markets, which is driving higher harvesting intensities legally and illegally, this study will inform forest management decision making on the long term dynamics of tree species recovery following logging.

Several pandemics have been reported throughout history. The Black Death, Spanish flu, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) among many others have received attention by both earlier and recent scholarships due to their impact on humanity. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, scholars had anticipated future outbreaks with the same or greater impact. The coronavirus which spread from Wuhan from December 2019, across nations has already decimated over 2 million lives with the Americans and Europeans scoring higher in mortality rates. Since its outbreak, scholars have reported cases and measured its impact concerning nations and the international economy. From a historical political economy approach, we add to the corpus of information on pandemics by using the theories of globalizations to discuss pandemics and COVID-19 in particular. We have highlighted the economic history of earlier pandemics and related same to the current burden. We discuss how resources have been distributed to address health systems of Africa and Ghana in particular. Also, the current contribution pays attention to critical questions on COVID-19 in Africa. Evidence from the study suggests that African nations shall do better when they combine their efforts and resources to fight the pandemic and others that might erupt in the near future. From the discussions, we draw lessons for stakeholders and policy makers.

Objectives: This study delineated the clonal lineages, antibiotic resistome and plasmid replicon types in multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates from a teaching hospital in Ghana. Methods: Identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing were done using the MALDI-TOF MS and Vitek-2 automated system. Genomic DNA extraction was carried out using the NucliSens easyMAG® (BioMérieux) kits and the DNA was subjected to whole genome sequencing (WGS) using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Results: Of the 200 isolates obtained, 37 were identified as K. pneumoniae of which 9 were resistant to all second and third-generation cephalosporins. These 9 isolates selected for further genomic analysis were characterized by the presence of 8 diverse sequence types (STs), capsular polysaccharide serotypes (K types and wzi allelic types) and multiple genes encoding resistance to β-lactams (blaCTX-M-15, blaSHV-11, blaTEM-1B, blaOXA-1), aminoglycosides (aac(3)-IIa, strB, strA, aadA16), fluoroquinolones/quinolones (qnrB66, oqxA, oqxB) and other antibiotic classes. Resistance genes were associated with plasmids, predominantly IncFIB(K) and ColRNAI. Multiple and diverse mutations in quinolone resistance-determining regions of gyrA (S83Y, D87A) and parC (S80I, N304S) in isolates resistant to ciprofloxacin (MIC ≥ 4 mg/mL) were found. Global phylogenomic analysis affirmed the diverse clonal clustering and origin of these isolates. Conclusions: The varied clonal clusters and resistome identified in the multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates is a major threat to the management of infections in Ghana. The molecular characterization of antibiotic resistance is thus imperative to inform strategies for containment. This paper presents a novel compound strengthening method based on laser-induced peening and cavitation peening (LIPCP). 2A70 aluminum alloy was strengthened by plasma shock wave and cavitation bubble collapse shock wave. The dynamic characteristic of cavitation bubble was captured by using a high-speed camera, and the strengthening mechanism of LIPCP was detailed elaborated. The peening depth was measured by an ultra-depth-of-field microscope and increases with increasing laser energies. But the surface roughness decreases with an increase in laser energies. The surface, after the compound strengthening, improved considerably with the laser energy and impact times, and has higher compressive residual stress. However, the compressive residual stress reaches a saturation value in the first 5 impacts due to the formation of a hardened layer on the material surface. In addition, ultrasonic cavitation erosion experiments were performed in 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature. The results reveal that there are four typical cavitation erosion periods during the cavitation erosion process, and the mass loss rate of the treated specimen is relatively lower than that of the untreated specimen. The microscopic morphology analysis shows that there are large smooth areas on the LIPCP treated surface after ultrasonic cavitation erosion, which indicates that the fatigue life and cavitation resistance of 2A70 alloy aluminum has been greatly improved. The LIPCP provides a promising method to strengthen the hydraulic machinery beneath the water. For years, the study of free surface vortices at hydropower plant intakes has been a topical and intriguing subject among engineers and researchers. This subject will continue to attract attention especially as the world strives to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy. Despite the numerous benefits associated with hydropower, the sustainability of some hydropower plants is being threatened due to low inflows often associated with climate change. Free surface vortices associated with low water levels or submergence at plant intakes can have very detrimental consequences on the operation of hydropower plants if not addressed. Notwithstanding this, free surface vortex flows have also been found to be very relevant in emerging technologies such as the water vortex hydropower plant system. This paper, therefore, presents a state-of-the-art review of the subject including summarised historical findings, but with an emphasis on current developments, findings and research gaps to guide practitioners and researchers. In response to the research gaps identified, the authors make a number of recommendations for further studies which include establishing relationships between free surface vortices formation and turbine efficiency, development of more accurate models for critical submergence and free surface vortices, assessment of free surface vortices at multiple and multi-level intakes, establishing the relationship between free surface vortices and sediment transport at intakes, application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) shape optimization tools for intake and anti-vortex device optimisation, as well as the continuing development of CFD tools to simulate air-entrained vortices at hydropower intakes.
