Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is an eco-friendly disinfectant gaining attention. This study examined the influence of metal ions (Co(II), Cu(II), Fe(II)) on PMS disinfection with chloride ions (Cl - ) against waterborne microorganisms, encompassing both bacteria and fungal spores. The findings elucidated that metal ions augment the inactivation of bacteria in the PMS/Cl - system while concurrently impeding the inactivation of fungal spores. Specifically, the PMS/Co(II)/Cl - process increased E. coli inactivation rates by 2.25 and 2.75 times compared to PMS/Co(II) and PMS/Cl - , respectively. Conversely, PMS/Me(II)/Cl - generally exhibited a diminished inactivation capacity against the three fungal spores compared to PMS/Cl - , albeit surpassing the efficacy of PMS/Me(II). For instance, the inactivation levels of A. niger by PMS/Cl - , PMS/Cu(II)/Cl - , and PMS/Cu(II) are 4.47-log, 1.92-log, and 0.11-log, respectively. Notably, fungal spores demonstrated a substantially higher resistance to disinfectants compared to bacteria. Differences in microbial susceptibility were linked to cell wall structure, composition, antioxidant defenses, and reactive species generation, such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ), and reactive chlorine species (RCS). Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have increasingly gained recognition as an "emerging contaminant" that poses a threat to the biosafety of drinking water. However, previous researches have primarily focused on the intracellular state of ARGs and rarely investigated the ecological characteristics (e.g., distribution and origin), environmental behavior (spread), and risks of extracellular form (eARGs) within drinking water systems. Therefore, this review evaluated isolation strategies and extraction methods for recovering eARGs from drinking water, elucidated the distribution characteristics of eARGs, and examined their impact on the antibiotic resistome from source water to tap water. We emphasized that chlorination and biological treatments significantly contribute to the prevalence and persistence of eARGs in drinking water. Moreover, we highlighted the role of biological reactors (e.g., biofilter, biological activated carbon) and drinking water distribution systems in facilitating the natural transformation of eARGs while significantly contributing to bacterial antibiotic resistance (BAR) propagation. Finally, we summarized the current risk assessment systems for ARGs and critically address remaining challenging questions necessary for better forecasting health risks associated with eARGs in drinking water environments. Antibiotic resistance, driven by the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARBs), has emerged as a pressing global health concern. Antimicrobial resistance is exacerbated by the widespread use of antibiotics in agriculture, aquaculture, and human medicine, leading to their accumulation in various environmental compartments such as soil, water, and sediments. The presence of ARGs in the environment, particularly in municipal water, animal husbandry, and hospital environments, poses significant risks to human health, as they can be transferred to potential human pathogens. Current remediation strategies, including the use of pyroligneous acid, coagulants, advanced oxidation, and bioelectrochemical systems, have shown promising results in reducing ARGs and ARBs from soil and water. However, these methods come with their own set of challenges, such as the need for elevated base levels in UV-activated persulfate and the long residence period required for photocatalysts. The future of combating antibiotic resistance lies in the development of standardized monitoring techniques, global collaboration, and the exploration of innovative remediation methods. Although cobalt (Co) plays a significant role in the transition to low-carbon technologies, its environmental impact remains largely unknown. This study examines Co impacts on the prokaryotic communities within river biofilms to evaluate their potential use as bioindicators of Co contamination. To this end, biofilms were cultivated in artificial streams enriched with different environmental Co concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 1 μM Co) over 28 days and examined for prokaryotic abundance and diversity via quantitative PCR and DNA-metabarcoding every 7 days. The prokaryotic community's resilience was further investigated after an additional 35 days without Co contamination. The prokaryotic communities were affected by 0.5 and 1 μM Co from the onset of biofilm colonization. The biofilm biomass was comparable between treatments, but the community composition differed. Control biofilms were dominated by Cyanobacteria and Planctomycetes, whereas Bacteroidetes dominated the Co-contaminated biofilms. Potential functional redundancy was observed through the implementation of carbon fixation alternatives by non-photosynthetic prokaryotes in biofilms exposed to high Co concentrations. No structural resilience was observed in the biofilms after 35 days without Co contamination. The proliferation of nitrile mixtures has significantly exacerbated environmental pollution. This study employed metagenomic analysis to investigate the short-term effects of nitrile mixtures on soil microbial communities and their metabolic functions. It also examined the responses of indigenous microorganisms and their functional metabolic genes across various land use types to different nitrile stressors. The nitrile compound treatments in this study resulted in an increase in the abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes, while simultaneously reducing overall microbial diversity. The key genes involved in the denitrification process, namely, nirK, nosZ, and hao, were down-regulated, and NO 3 - -N, NO 2 - -N, and NH 4 + -N concentrations decreased by 7.7%-12.3%, 11.1%-21.3%, and 11.3%-30.9%, respectively. Notably, pond sludge samples exhibited a significant increase in the abundance of nitrogen fixation-related genes nifH, vnfK, vnfH, and vnfG following exposure to nitrile compounds. Furthermore, the fumarase gene fumD, which is responsible for catalyzing fumaric acid into malic acid in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, showed a substantial increase of 7.2-10.6-fold upon nitrile addition. Enzyme genes associated with the catechol pathway, including benB-xylY, dmpB, dmpC, dmpH, and mhpD, displayed increased abundance, whereas genes related to the benzoyl-coenzyme A pathway, such as bcrA, dch, had, oah, and gcdA, were notably reduced. In summary, complex nitrile compounds were found to significantly reduce the species diversity of soil microorganisms. Nitrile-tolerant microorganisms demonstrated the ability to degrade and adapt to nitrile pollutants by enhancing functional enzymes involved in the catechol pathway and fenugreek conversion pathway. The impact of microbial infections is increasing over time, and it is one of the major reasons for death in both developed and developing countries. colistin is considered as the antibiotic of last choice for infections brought by major multidrug-resistant (MDR), gram-negative bacteria such as Enterobacter species, Acinetobacter species, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Existing approaches to diagnose these resistant species are relatively slow and take up to 2 to 3 days. In this work, we propose a novel interdisciplinary method based on Raman spectroscopy and heavy water to identify colistin-resistant microbes. Our hypothesis is based on the fact that resistant bacteria will be metabolically active in the culture medium containing antibiotics and heavy water, and these bacteria will take up deuterium instead of hydrogen to newly synthesized lipids and proteins. This effect will generate a 'C - D' bond-specific Raman spectral marker. Successful identification of this band in the spectral profile can confirm the presence of colistin-resistant bacteria. We have validated the efficacy of this approach in identifying colistin-resistant bacteria spiked in artificial urine and have compared sensitivity at different bacterial concentrations. Urbanisation and building advancements have increased microbial growth in indoor environments, altering human interactions with these microorganisms. Restrooms and their sinks harbour diverse bacterial communities, that differ from those found in natural environments, that could have negative implications for human health. Over two and a half years, this study examined the diversity, temporal dynamics, and resilience of bacterial communities in restroom sink P-traps in a newly built university building. Structured into two phases, the first phase consisted of continuous monitoring of bacterial community dynamics for two years (n = 352), while the second phase involved an intervention with sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and subsequent sampling (n = 132). In the first phase, we show that sink communities converge, becoming more compositionally similar to other sinks within the building. Bacterial families such as Rhodocyclaceae and Flavobacteriaceae dominated across the sinks, and others such as Comamonadaceae, Moraxellaceae and Enterbacteriaceae were highly prevalent. When comparing bacterial structure and composition to other sinks located on the university campus, the mean bacterial dissimilarity decreased over time, indicating compositional similarity, particularly with the newer buildings on campus. The second phase demonstrated resilience by the bacterial sink communities. Following bleach treatments, a distinct increase in Acinetobacter was observed. However, by the fourth week after bleach invention, bacterial communities had re-established to levels observed prior to treatment. This study had the unique opportunity to sample a newly built building before occupancy and for the subsequent two and a half years. The widespread prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in the environment poses concerns as they are vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The relationships between antibiotic resistomes and MPs remain unexplored in soil which was considered as the reservoirs of MPs and ARGs. This study investigated the effects of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs on soil bacterial communities and ARG abundance which soil samples sourced from 20 provinces across China. We found that PVC significantly influences soil bacterial community structure and ARG abundance. Structural equation modeling revealed that PVC alters soil characteristics, ultimately affecting soil bacterial communities, including ARG-containing bacterial hosts, and the relative abundance of ARGs. Sewage surveillance is a cost-effective tool for assessing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in urban populations. However, research on sewage AMR in remote areas is still limited. Here, we used shotgun metagenomic sequencing to profile antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and ARG-carrying pathogens (APs) across 15 cities in Tibetan Plateau (TP) and the major cities in eastern China. Notable regional disparities in sewage ARG composition were found, with a significantly higher ARG abundance in TP (2.97 copies/cell). A total of 542 and 545 APs were identified in sewage from TP and the East, respectively, while more than 40 % carried mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Moreover, 65 MGEs-carrying APs were identified as World Health Organization (WHO) priority-like bacterial and fungal pathogens. Notably, a fungal zoonotic pathogen, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, was found for the first time to carry a nitroimidazole resistance gene (nimJ). Although distinct in AP compositions, the relative abundances of APs were comparable in these two regions. Furthermore, sewage in TP was found to be comparable to the cities in eastern China in terms of ARG mobility and AMR risks. Microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) system has been shown to enhance the efficiency of microalgae in wastewater treatment, yet its effectiveness in treating levofloxacin (LEV) wastewater remains unexplored. This study compared the treatment of LEV wastewater using pure Chlorella pyrenoidosa (PA) and its MBC constructed with activated sludge bacteria. The results showed that MBC improved the removal efficiency of LEV from 3.50-5.41 % to 33.62-57.20 % by enhancing the growth metabolism of microalgae. The MBC increased microalgae biomass and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion, yet reduced photosynthetic pigment content compared to the PA. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota are the major bacteria in MBC. Furthermore, the transcriptome reveals that the growth-promoting effects of MBC are associated with the up-regulation of genes encoding the glycolysis, the citrate cycle (TCA cycle), and the pentose phosphate pathway. Enhanced carbon fixation, coupled with down-regulation of photosynthetic electron transfer processes, suggests an energy allocation mechanism within MBC. The up-regulation of porphyrin and arachidonic acid metabolism, along with the expression of genes encoding LEV-degrading enzymes, provides evidence of MBC's superior tolerance to and degradation of LEV. The profound influences of altitude on aquatic microbiome were well documented. However, differences in the responses of different life domains (bacteria, microeukaryotes, viruses) and antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) in glacier river ecosystems to altitude remain unknown. Here, we employed shotgun metagenomic and amplicon sequencing to characterize the altitudinal variations of microbiome and ARGs in the Rongbu River, Mount Everest. Our results indicated the relative influences of stochastic processes on microbiome and ARGs assembly in water and sediment were in the following order: microeukaryotes < ARGs < viruses < bacteria. Moreover, distinct assembly patterns of the microbiome and ARGs were found in response to differences in altitude, the latter of which shift from deterministic to stochastic processes with increasing differences in altitude. Partial least squares path modeling revealed that mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and viral β-diversity were the major factors influencing the ARG abundances. Taken together, our work revealed that altitude-caused environmental changes led to significant changes in the composition and assembly processes of the microbiome and ARGs, while ARGs had a unique response pattern to altitude. Freeze-thaw (FT) aging can change the physicochemical characteristics of microplastics (MPs). The toxic impacts of FT-aged-MPs to soil invertebrates are poorly understood. Here the toxic mechanisms of FT-aged-MPs were investigated in earthworms after 28 d exposure. Results showed that FT 50 µm PE-MPs significantly increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) by 5.78-9.04 % compared to pristine 50 µm PE-MPs (41.80-45.05 ng/mgprot), whereas FT 500 µm PE-MPs reduced ROS by 7.52-7.87 % compared to pristine 500 µm PE-MPs (51.44-54.46 ng/mgprot). FT-PP-MPs significantly increased ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in earthworms by 14.82-44.06 % and 46.75-110.21 %, respectively, compared to pristine PP-MPs (40.56-44.66 ng/mgprot, 0.41-2.53 nmol/mgprot). FT-aged PE- and PP-MPs caused more severe tissue damage to earthworms. FT-aged PE-MPs increased the alpha diversity of the gut flora of earthworms compared to pristine MPs. Earthworm guts exposed to FT-aged-MPs were enriched with differential microbial genera of contaminant degradation capacity. FT-PE-MPs affected membrane translocation by up-regulating lipids and lipid-like molecules, whereas FT-PP-MPs changed xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism by down-regulating organoheterocyclic compounds compared to the pristine PE- and PP-MPs. Green agriculture faced challenges due to the shortage of efficient cadmium (Cd)-resistant plant growth-promoting bacteria (CdR-PGPB) and their low survival rate and activity during application. In this study, a diverse range of efficient CdR-PGPB were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Desmodium elegans, especially those with high phosphate-solubilizing capabilities (272.87-450.45 mg L -1 ). Two highly efficient CdR-PGPB namely, XH1 and XH3 were loaded on to rice husk biochar (RHB) and pig bone biochar (PBB), labelled as RHBM and PBBM respectively. This study aimed to explore their effectiveness and mechanisms in promoting maize growth in a Cd-contaminated planting system. Results showed that PBBM performed best among all treatments. It significantly decreased soil phytoavailable Cd by 53.19 % and Cd content in maize shoot by 85.89 %. It also increased soil available phosphorus by 145.72 %, soil alkaline phosphatase activity by 76.34 %, maize shoot/root biomass by 47.06 %/67.98 %, Chlorophyll (a/b) content by 66.80 %/134.13 % and peroxidase activity by 171.96 %. These results were achieved through the synergistic action of efficient CdR-PGPB and PBB. PFOA has garnered heightened scrutiny for its impact on denitrification, especially given its frequent detection in secondary effluent discharged from wastewater treatment plants. However, it is still unclear what potential risk PFOA release poses to a typical advanced treatment process, especially the sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) process. In this study, different PFOA concentration were tested to explore their impact on denitrification kinetics and microbial dynamic responses of the SAD process. The results showed that an increase PFOA concentration from 0 to 1000 μg/L resulted in a decrease in nitrate removal rate from 9.52 to 7.73 mg-N/L·h. At the same time, it increased nitrite accumulation and N 2 O emission by 6.11 and 2.03 times, respectively. The inhibitory effect of PFOA on nitrate and nitrite reductase activity in the SAD process was linked to the observed fluctuations in nitrate and nitrite levels. It is noteworthy that nitrite reductase was more vulnerable to the influence of PFOA than nitrate reductase. Furthermore, PFOA showed a significant impact on gene expression and microbial community. Metabolic function prediction revealed a notable decrease in nitrogen metabolism and an increase in sulfur metabolism under PFOA exposure. Composting is widely applied in recycling ever-increasing sewage sludge. However, the insufficient elimination of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in conventional compost fertilizer poses considerable threat to agriculture safety and human health. Here we investigated the efficacy and potential mechanisms in the removal of antibiotics and ARGs from sludge in hyperthermophilic composting (HTC) plant. Our results demonstrated that the HTC product was of high maturity. HTC led to complete elimination of antibiotics and potential pathogens, as well as removal of 98.8 % of ARGs and 88.1 % of mobile genetic elements (MGEs). The enrichment of antibiotic-degrading candidates and related metabolic functions during HTC suggested that biodegradation played a crucial role in antibiotic removal. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed that the reduction of ARGs was attributed to the decline of ARG-associated bacteria, mainly due to the high-temperature selection. Triclosan (TCS) and tetracycline (TC) as common antibacterial agents are frequently detected in the influent of wastewater treatment plants. The TCS and TC exposure patterns may determine their impacts on wastewater treatment microbiomes, on which information remains unknown. In this study, the impacts of sequential exposure of TCS and TC on methanogenic digestion microbiomes in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were analyzed and compared with that of the same microbiomes being simultaneously exposed to TCS and TC. Results indicated that the UASB reactor 2 (MD2) with sequential TCS-TC exposure consistently demonstrated higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency (94.7 %). In contrast, in the MD1 reactor, COD removal efficiency decreased from 94.4 % to 82.7 % upon simultaneous exposure to TCS and TC. Accordingly, a 1.8 times higher enrichment of total antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was observed in MD1 relative to MD2. Using a dissimilarity-overlap approach, the MD2 microbiome with sequential exposure was predominantly mediated by deterministic factors in their community assembly (largely contributed by abundant and intermediate biospheres), resulting in microbial interaction networks with higher average clustering coefficients and shorter average path lengths, compared to the MD1 microbiomes. The livestock industry has long been a hotspot environment for antibiotic resistance genes, with smallholder farming still holding a significant position in pig farming. However, the microbial antibiotic resistance and pathogen risks in pigs under the smallholder farming model remain unclear. We systematically analyzed the antibiotic resistance and microbial composition of pig feces from smallholder and large-scale farming models in Sichuan. The results indicated a lower abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and similar microbial composition in smallholder farming compared to large-scale farming. Beneficial bacteria were more abundant in small-scale farming, whereas large-scale farming exhibited more ARGs, virulence genes, and human pathogenic bacteria (HPBs), including ESBL Escherichia coli strains closely related to human strains, indicating higher zoonotic risk. The findings suggest that smallholder farming presents a relatively better microbial composition and resistance profile, highlighting its advantages over large-scale farming in terms of pig and human health. Aedes albopictus mosquitoes face numerous anthropic stressors in urban areas. These xenobiotics not only impact mosquito physiology but also shape the composition of their microbiota, which play important roles in host physiological traits. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants known to alter mosquito metabolism, but no studies have yet investigated their impact on microbiota. Using a bespoke indoor mesocosm tailored for Ae. albopictus mosquitoes, we investigated the dynamics of bacterial communities in both mosquitoes and their larval breeding sites following chronic exposure to a cocktail of PAHs consisting of benzo[a]pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene and benzo[b]fluoranthene. Our findings showed that PAHs have a stage-specific effect on mosquito microbiota, with a higher impact in larvae than in adults, contributing to 12.5 % and 4.5 % of the PAHs-induced variations, respectively. The presence of PAHs in the treated mesocosm led to the enrichment of bacterial families and genera known for their ability to catabolize PAHs, such as Comamonadaceae and Raoultella (increasing from 19 % to 30 % and from 1.2 % to 5.6 %, respectively). Conversely, prevalent taxa found in mosquito microbiota like Wolbachia and Cedecea exhibited a reduction (decreasing from 4 % to 0.8 % and from 12.8 % to 6.4 %, respectively). This reduction could be attributed to the competitive advantage gained by PAH-degrading taxa, or it could reflect a direct sensitivity to PAH exposure. Overall, this indicates a shift in microbiota composition favoring bacteria that can thrive in a PAH-contaminated environment. PAHs persisted in the water of breeding sites only the first 45 days of the experiment. Benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[b]fluoranthene were more susceptible to bioaccumulation in larval tissues over time. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of the impact of pollution on mosquitoes and could facilitate future research on the importance of symbiosis in urban-dwelling insect disease vectors. Global concern continues to mount regarding the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in soil. However, little is known about how various types of MPs influence the properties of soil ecosystems. Here, we evaluated the effects of six different types of MPs, including low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyhydroxy-alkanoates (PHA), polybutadiene styrene (PBS), and polylactide (PLA), on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial communities. At the end of a 230-day soil incubation, we observed significant changes in soil moisture content, soil organic carbon, pH, NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, and available phosphorus. The addition of MPs had a significant influence on the activities of soil β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, urease, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase, with effects varying with MP type. Results of 16S rRNA gene high throughput sequencing showed that MP exposure had little effect on soil microbial alpha diversity, but that PHA contamination significantly reduced ACE, Chao1, and Shannon index values. MP contamination also altered soil microbial community composition. In particular, the relative abundance of Firmicutes increased significantly while the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria (especially the nitrogen-fixing rhizobia), and Acidobacteriota decreased following exposure to PHA. Redundancy analysis showed that acid phosphatase and pH were the two main environmental factors affecting bacterial community structure at the phylum and order levels. Furthermore, Tax4Fun2 analysis found that MP treatment disrupted fundamental bacterial metabolic pathways. The rodent gut microbiota is a known reservoir of antimicrobial resistance, yet the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) within rodent cecal microbial communities and the specific bacterial species harboring these ARGs remain largely underexplored. This study employed high-throughput sequencing of 122 samples from five distinct rodent species to comprehensively profile the diversity and distribution of ARGs and to identify the bacterial hosts of these genes. A gene catalog of the rodent cecal microbiome was constructed, comprising 22,757,369 non-redundant genes. Analysis of the microbial composition and diversity revealed that Bacillota and Bacteroidota were the dominant bacterial phyla across different rodent species, with significant variations in species composition among the rodents. In total, 3703 putative antimicrobial resistance protein-coding genes were identified, corresponding to 392 unique ARG types classified into 32 resistance classes. The most enriched ARGs in the rodent cecal microbiome were associated with multidrug resistance, followed by glycopeptide and elfamycin antibiotics. Procrustes analysis demonstrated a correlation between the structure of the microbial community and the resistome. Metagenomic assembly-based host tracking indicated that most ARG-carrying contigs originated from the bacterial family Oscillospiraceae. Additionally, 130 ARGs showed significant correlations with mobile genetic elements. These findings provide new insights into the cecal microbiota and the prevalence of ARGs across five rodent species. As emerging pollutants, microplastics can aggregate microorganisms on their surfaces and form biofilms, enriching antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Consequently, microplastic biofilms have become a focal point of research. Horizontal gene transfer is one of the primary mechanisms by which bacteria acquire antibiotic resistance, with much of the research focusing on suspended bacteria. However, microplastic biofilms, as hotspots for horizontal gene transfer, also merit significant investigation. This study primarily explored and compared the frequency of ARG conjugative transfer between suspended bacteria and microplastic biofilms. The results demonstrated that, compared to suspended bacteria, microplastic biofilms enhanced the frequency of ARG conjugative transfer by 7.2-19.6 times. Among them, biofilms on polyethylene microplastics showed the strongest promotion of conjugation. After the formation of microplastic biofilms, there was a significant increase in bacterial density within the biofilms, which raised the collision frequency of donor and recipient bacteria. Then microplastic biofilms facilitated the gene expression levels of outer membrane proteins, enhanced bacterial gene transfer capabilities, promoted the synthesis of conjugative pili, accelerated the formation of conjugative pairing systems, and elevated the expression levels of genes related to DNA replication and transfer systems, thereby enhancing the conjugative transfer of ARGs within microplastic biofilms. Among different types of microplastic biofilms, polyethylene biofilms exhibited the highest bacterial density, thus showing the highest frequency of ARG conjugation. The rise of antimicrobial resistance has positioned ESKAPE pathogens as a serious global health threat, primarily due to the limitations and frequent failures of current treatment options. This growing risk has spurred the scientific community to seek innovative antibiotic therapies and improved oversight strategies. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the origins and resistance mechanisms of ESKAPE pathogens, while also exploring next-generation treatment strategies for these infections. In addition, it will address both traditional and novel approaches to combating antibiotic resistance, offering insights into potential new therapeutic avenues. Emerging research underscores the urgency of developing new antimicrobial agents and strategies to overcome resistance, highlighting the need for novel drug classes and combination therapies. The increasing demand for chitosan has led to the exploration of alternative sources, including insects. In this study, chitosan was extracted from Zophobas morio beetles with 19.17 % yield. FTIR and Raman Spectroscopy showed similar peaks in Z. morio chitosan (ZC) and commercial chitosan (CC). ZC showed low crystallinity (40.96 %) and high thermal residual mass (42.7 %) than CC. SEM imaging of ZC displayed pores ranging from 10 μm to 0.3 μm. EDX mapping revealed the homogenous presence of C, N and O elements. ZC exhibited low molecular weight (435.95 kDa) and low intrinsic viscosity (317.95 cm 3 /g) than CC (680.20 kDa and 480.87 cm 3 /g, respectively). Degree of deacetylation of ZC and CC was 96.24 % and 78.26 %, respectively. ZC showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 13883), Proteus mirabilis (ATCC 29906), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212) and Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) with zones of inhibition ranging from 5 mm to 11 mm. The minimum bactericidal concentration of ZC against K. pneumoniae and P. mirabilis was lower than CC. Hospital wastewater is a critical source of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which facilitates the proliferation and spread of clinically significant antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogenic bacteria. This study utilized metagenomic approaches, including advanced binning techniques, such as MetaBAT2, MaxBin2, and CONCOCT, which offer significant improvements in accuracy and completeness over traditional binning methods. These methods were used to comprehensively assess the dynamics and composition of resistomes and mobilomes in untreated wastewater samples taken from two general hospitals and one cancer hospital. This study revealed a diverse bacterial landscape, largely consisting of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria, with notable variations in microbial composition among hospitals. Analysis of the top 15 genera showed unique microbial pattern distribution in each hospital: Aeromonas was predominant in 1stHWTS (49.39 %), Acidovorax in the CAHWTS at 16.85 %, and Escherichia and Bacteroides in the 2ndHWTS at 11.44 % and 11.33 %, respectively. A total of 114 pathogenic bacteria were identified, with drug-resistant Aeromonas caviae and Escherichia coli being the most prevalent. The study identified 34 types and 1660 subtypes of ARGs, including important last-resort antibiotic resistance genes (LARGs), such as bla NDM , mcr, and tet(X). Using metagenomic binning, this study uncovered distinct patterns of host-resistance associations, particularly with Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. Network analysis highlighted the complex interactions among ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and bacterial species, all contributing to the dissemination of AMR. These findings emphasize the intricate nature of AMR in hospital wastewater and the influence of hospital-specific factors on microbial resistance patterns. This study provides support for implementing integrated management strategies, including robust surveillance, advanced wastewater treatment, and strict antibiotic stewardship, to control the dissemination of AMR. Wastewater treatment plants and water reclamation facilities are reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). These ARGs are not limited solely to intracellular DNA (inARGs) but include extracellular DNA (exARGs) present in wastewater. The release of exARGs from cells can be exacerbated by treatment processes, including chlorine disinfection, which disrupts bacterial cells. Given the potential for exARGs to drive horizontal gene transfer and contribute to the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance, it is imperative to recognize these fractions as emerging environmental pollutants. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive year-long assessment of both inARGs and exARGs, further differentiating between dissolved exARGs (Dis&#95;exARGs) and exARGs adsorbed onto particulate matter (Ads&#95;exARGs), within a full-scale wastewater treatment and water reclamation facility. The results revealed that Ads&#95;exARGs comprised up to 30 % of the total ARGs in raw sewage with high biomass content. Generally, treatments at low and high doses of chlorine increased the abundance of Dis&#95;exARGs and Ads&#95;exARGs. The fate of ARG levels that varied depending on the type of ARGs suggested variations in the susceptibility of the host bacteria to chlorination. Moreover, co-occurrence of several potential opportunistic pathogenic bacteria and ARGs were observed. The present study investigated the indigenous metal-tolerant bacterial populations in the mine-water microbiome. Our intention was to assess the effects of the metal concentrations in mine water on the bacterial community of mine waters. The bacterial communities in Vanadium and Gold mine-water samples were exposed to different heavy-metal Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Nickel, Mercury and Vanadium at two different concentrations (5 and 25 mM). The 16S rRNA amplicon from mine waters were sequenced using the Illumina's NGS MiSeq platform. Data analysis revealed a high diversity in the bacterial populations associated with the different heavy metals at different concentrations. The taxonomic profiles obtained after the exposure were different in different salts, but mostly dominated by Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Firmicutes at variable relative abundance. Microplastic (MP) pollution can exert significant pressure on soil ecosystems, however, the interactive effects of MPs on soil bacterial, fungal and protist communities remains poorly understood. Soil macrofauna, such as earthworms, can be directly affected by MPs, potentially leading to a range of feedbacks on the soil microbial community. To address this, we conducted a microcosm experiment to examine the effects of conventional (i.e., polyethylene, polystyrene) and biodegradable MPs (i.e. PBAT, polylactic acid) on the structure of the soil bacterial, fungal, and protist communities in the presence or absence of earthworms. We found that MP contamination negatively affected the diversity and composition of soil microbial and protist communities, with smaller-sized conventional MPs having the most pronounced effects. For example, compared with the unamended control, small-sized polyethylene MPs both significantly reduced the Shannon diversity of soil bacteria, fungi, and protist by 4.3 %, 37.0 %, and 9.1 %, respectively. Biodegradable MPs increased negative correlations among bacteria, fungi, and protists. However, earthworms mitigated these effects, enhancing the diversity and altering the composition of these communities. They also increased the niche width and stability of the soil microbial food web network. Pyroxasulfone is a relatively new herbicide that is sprayed on soils to control grassy weeds and some broadleaf weeds during the cultivation of agronomic crops. However, information regarding its environmental risks to soil ecosystems is currently limited. Here, the response of soil characteristics and soil bacterial communities to pyroxasulfone exposure were evaluated. The rate of pyroxasulfone degradation in soil decreased with increasing herbicide concentration, and its half-life at doses of 0.12 (the recommended field rate), 1.2 and 12 mg kg -1 was estimated to be 15.75 d, 39.46 d and 78.08 d, respectively. Soil pH markedly increased after pyroxasulfone treatment. Pyroxasulfone significantly inhibited urease activity but had a small effect on soil sucrase activity. In the late stages of degradation, the abundance of bacteria clearly decreased in soils treated with pyroxasulfone at doses of 1.2 and 12 mg kg -1 . Compared with the control group, a distinct decrease in bacterial network complexity was observed at a pyroxasulfone dose of 0.12 mg kg -1 , while the opposite phenomenon was observed at a pyroxasulfone dose of 12 mg kg -1 . The copy numbers of the AOA amoA and AOB amoA genes exposed to 10- and 100-fold the recommended rates of pyroxasulfone were significantly lower than those in soils without pyroxasulfone residue at 25 and 60 days after treatment. The prevalence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been a significant concern for global public health in recent years. Small rural watersheds are the smallest units of factor mobility for agricultural production in China, and their ARG profiles are the best scale of the contamination status, but the mapping and the distribution and diffusion of ARGs in the water and soil of small rural watersheds are inadequate. In this study, based on microbial metagenomics, we invested prevalence maps of 209 ARGs corresponding to typical commonly used antibiotics (including multidrug, aminoglycoside, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB), and β-Lactamase) in water and soil in different agricultural types, as well as within water-soil interfaces in small rural watersheds in Southwest China. The results revealed that the most abundant ARGs in water and soil were consistent, but different in subtypes, and anthropogenic activities affect the transport of ARGs between water and soils. Livestock wastewater discharges influenced the diversity and abundance of ARGs in water, while in soil it is planting type and fertilizer management, and thus interfered with the co-occurrence patterns between bacteria and ARGs. Co-occurrence analysis revealed that Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the predominant ARG hosts in water and soil, but soil exhibited a more intricate ARG-bacterial association. Considering the increasing number of pathogens resistant to commonly used antibiotics as well as antiseptics, there is an urgent need for antimicrobial approaches that can effectively inactivate pathogens without the risk of establishing resistance. An alternative approach in this context is antibacterial photodynamic therapy (APDT). APDT is a process that involves bacterial cell death using appropriate wavelength light energy and photosensitizer and causes the production of reactive oxygen species inside or outside the microbial cell depending on the penetration of light energy. In our study, a new porphyrin compound 4,4'-methylenebis(2-((E)-((4-(10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin-5-yl)phenyl)imino)methyl)phenol) (SP) was designed and synthesized as photosensitizer and its structure was clarified by NMR ( 13 C and 1 H) and mass determination method. Photophysical and photochemical properties were examined in detail using different methods. Singlet oxygen quantum yields were obtained as 0.48 and 0.59 by direct and indirect methods, respectively. Hospital wastewaters (HWWs) serve as critical reservoirs for disseminating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). However, the dynamics and noteworthy shifts of ARGs and their associated pathogenicity, mobility, and resistome risks during HWWs treatment processes remain poorly understood. Utilizing metagenomic sequencing and assembly, we identified 817 ARG subtypes conferring resistance to 20 classes of antibiotics across 18 HWW samples from influent to effluent. Genes encoding resistance to multidrug, aminoglycoside and beta&#95;lactam were the most prevalent ARG types, reflecting patterns observed in clinical settings. On-site treatment efforts decreased the relative abundance of ARGs by 77.4% from influent to secondary sedimentation, whereas chlorine disinfection significantly increased their abundance in the final effluent. Deterministic processes primarily drove the taxonomic assembly, with Proteobacteria being the most abundant phylum and serving as the primary host for 15 ARG types. Contig-based analysis further revealed 114 pathogenic ARB, with Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibiting multidrug-resistant. The contributions of host bacteria and pathogenic ARB varied throughout wastewater treatment. In addition, 7.10%-31.0 % ARGs were flanked by mobile genetic elements (MGEs), predominantly mediated by transposase (74.1%). Notably, tnpA exhibited the highest potential for ARG dissemination, frequently co-occurring with beta-lactam resistance genes (35.2%). Considering ARG profiles, pathogenic hosts, and transferability, raw influent exhibited the highest antibiotic resistome risk index (ARRI), followed by the final effluent. Chlorine disinfection exacerbated resistome risks by inducing potential pathogenic ARB and mobile ARGs, posing threats to the receiving environment. The effects of heavy metals on soil microbial communities have been extensively investigated, whereas the combined effects of heavy metals and nutrients on soil microbial communities and their interactions are rarely understood. In this study, we investigated the distribution patterns of heavy metals, nutrients and microbial communities in a typical contaminated farmland and explored their interaction mechanisms. The results showed that Cd and Pb were the main pollutants in this area, which mainly came from the smelter. Canonical correspondence analysis and variance decomposition analysis showed that the heavy metals played a more important role in restraining the microbial community structure of soils than other soil properties. Soil Cd, Pb, pH and available K content were the most important environmental factors affecting the microbial community structures in soil. Major Cd tolerant bacteria and fungi were detected including Actinobacteriota, Gemmatimonadota, Entorrhizomycota and Mortierellomycota. The analyses of molecular ecological networks showed that there were 84.1 % of negative correlations among microorganisms. Cd could regulate the abundance of key nodes in Cd-tolerant network modules, and these key nodes could improve the adaptability of the whole module to heavy metals through competition with other microorganisms. Here, we explored the turnover and assembly mechanism of plastisphere ARGs on 8 different microplastic polymers (4 biodegradable (bMPs) and 4 non-biodegradable microplastics (nMPs)) by metagenomic sequencing. Our study revealed the presence of 479 ARGs with abundance ranging from 41.37 to 58.17 copies/16S rRNA gene in all plastispheres. These ARGs were predominantly multidrug resistance genes. The richness of plastisphere ARGs on different polymers had a significant correlation with the contribution of species turnover to plastisphere ARGs β diversity. Furthermore, polymer type was the most critical factor affecting the composition of plastisphere ARGs. More opportunistic pathogens carrying diverse ARGs on BMPs (PBAT, PBS, and PHA) with higher horizontal gene transfer potential may further magnify the ecological risks and human health threats. For example, the opportunistic pathogens Riemerella anatipestifer, Vibrio campbellii, and Vibrio cholerae are closely related to human production and life, which were the important potential hosts of many plastisphere ARGs and mobile genetic elements on BMPs. Microplastics can not only serve as vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), but also they and even nanoplastics potentially affect the occurrence of ARGs in indigenous environmental microorganisms, which have aroused great concern for the development of antibiotic resistance. This article specifically reviews the effects of micro/nanoplastics (concentration, size, exposure time, chemical additives) and their interactions with other pollutants on environmental ARGs dissemination. The changes of horizontal genes transfer (HGT, i.e., conjugation, transformation and transduction) of ARGs caused by micro/nanoplastics were also summarized. Further, this review systematically sums up the mechanisms of micro/nanoplastics regulating HGT process of ARGs, including reactive oxygen species production, cell membrane permeability, transfer-related genes expression, extracellular polymeric substances production, and ARG donor-recipient adsorption/contaminants adsorption/biofilm formation. The underlying mechanisms in changes of bacterial communities induced by micro/nanoplastics were also discussed as it was an important factor for structuring the profile of ARGs in the actual environment, including causing environmental stress, providing carbon sources, forming biofilms, affecting pollutants distribution and environmental factors. During the recent times, environmental antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and their potential transfer to other bacterial hosts of pathogenic importance are of serious concern. However, the dissemination strategies of such ARGs are largely unknown. We tested that saprotrophic soil fungi differentially enriched antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARBs) and subsequently contributed in spatial distribution of selective ARGs. Wafergen qPCR analysis of 295 different ARGs was conducted for manure treated pre-sterilized soil incubated or not with selected bacterial-fungal consortia. The qPCR assay detected unique ARGs specifically found in the mycosphere of ascomycetous and basidiomycetous fungi. Both fungi exerted potentially different selection pressures on ARBs, resulting in different patterns of ARGs dissemination (to distant places) along their respective growing fungal highways. The relative abundance of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was significantly decreased along fungal highways compared to the respective inoculation points. Moreover, the decrease in MGEs and ARGs (along fungal highways) was more prominent over time which depicts the continuous selection pressure of growing fungi on ARBs for enrichment of particular ARGs in mycosphere. Such data also indicate the potential role of saprotrophic soil fungi to facilitate horizontal gene transfer within mycospheric environmental settings. Gut digestion by earthworms (GDE) is a crucial step in vermicomposting, affecting the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in vermicompost sludge. The extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix of sludge is an important space for ARG transfer. However, the effect of GDE on EPS-associated ARGs remains unclear. Therefore, this study explored the role of GDE in driving the transfer of ARGs within different EPS layers in sludge. For this, the changes in intracellular ARGs and EPS-associated ARGs in sludge were analyzed after 5 days of the GDE process. The results showed that after the GDE process, both nitrate and dissolved organic carbon significantly increased in all EPS layers of sludge, while the proteins and polysaccharides only enhanced in soluble and loosely bound EPS of sludge. In addition, a 7.0% decrease in bacterial diversity was recorded after the GDE process, with a functional bacterial community structure emerging. Moreover, the absolute abundance of total ARGs and mobile genetic elements decreased by 90.71% and 61.83%, respectively, after the GDE process. Intracellular ARGs decreased by 92.1%, while EPS-associated ARGs increased by 4.9%, indicative of intracellular ARG translocation into the EPS during the GDE process. Notably, the ARGs exhibited significant enrichment in both the soluble and loosely bound EPS, whereas they were reduced in the tightly bound EPS. The ongoing and progressive evolution of antibiotic resistance presents escalating challenges for the clinical management and prevention of bacterial infections. Understanding the makeup of resistance genomes and accurately quantifying the current abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are crucial for assessing the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to public health. This comprehensive study investigated the distribution and diversity of bacterial community composition, ARGs, and virulence factors (VFs) across human, chicken, pig fecal, and soil microbiomes in various provinces of China. As a result, multidrug resistance was identified across all samples. Core ARGs primarily related to multidrug, MLS (Macrolides-Lincosamide-Streptogramins), and tetracycline resistance were characterized. A significant correlation between ARGs and bacterial taxa was observed, especially in soil samples. Probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus harbored ARGs, potentially contributing to the dissemination of antibiotic resistance. We screened subsets of ARGs from samples from different sources as indicators to assess the level of ARGs contamination in samples, with high accuracy. Background: The use of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectra (MALDI-TOF MS) combined with machine learning techniques has recently emerged as a method to address the public health crisis of antimicrobial resistance. This systematic review, conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, aims to evaluate the current state of the art in using machine learning for the detection and classification of antimicrobial resistance from MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry data., Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature on machine learning applications for antimicrobial resistance detection was performed using databases such as Web Of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and PubMed. Only original articles in English were included. Studies applying machine learning without using MALDI-TOF mass spectra were excluded., Results: Forty studies met the inclusion criteria. Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli were the most frequently cited bacteria. The antibiotics resistance most studied corresponds to methicillin for S. aureus, cephalosporins for K. pneumoniae, and aminoglycosides for E. coli. Random forest, support vector machine and logistic regression were the most employed algorithms to predict antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, seven studies reported using artificial neural networks. Most studies reported metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) above 0.80., Conclusions: Our study indicates that random forest, support vector machine, and logistic regression are effective for predicting antimicrobial resistance using MALDI-TOF MS data. The increasing global demand for food production emphasizes the use of organic animal fertilizers, such as manure and slurry, to support sustainable agricultural practices. However, recent studies highlight concerns about antibiotic resistance determinants in animal excrements, posing a potential risk of spreading antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soil and, consequently, in food products. This study examines the dissemination of ARGs within the soil and plant-associated microbiomes in cherry radish following the application of swine and bovine slurry. In a 45-day pot experiment, slurry-amended soil, rhizospheric bacteria, and endophytic bacteria in radish roots and leaves were sampled and analyzed for 21 ARGs belonging to 7 Antibiotic Resistance Phenotypes (ARPs). The study also assessed slurry's impact on soil microbiome functional diversity, enzymatic activity, physicochemical soil parameters, and the concentration of 22 selected antimicrobials in soil and plant tissues. Tetracyclines and β-lactams were the most frequently identified ARGs in bovine and swine slurry, aligning with similar studies worldwide. Swine slurry showed a higher prevalence of ARGs in soil and plant-associated bacteria, particularly TET genes, reflecting pig antibiotic treatments. The persistent dominance of TET genes across slurry, soil, and plant microbiomes highlights significant influence of slurry application on gene occurrence in plant bacteria. The presence of ARGs in edible plant parts underscores health risks associated with raw vegetable consumption. Time-dependent dynamics of ARG occurrence highlighted their persistent presence throughout the experiment duration, influenced by the environmental factors and antibiotic residuals. Notably, ciprofloxacin, which was the only one antimicrobial detected in fertilized soil, significantly impacted bovine-amended variants. Soil salinity modifications induced by slurry application correlated with changes in ARG occurrence. The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), disinfectant resistance genes (DRGs), and pathogens in animal food processing environments (FAPE) poses a significant risk to human health. However, knowledge of the contamination and risk profiles of a typical commercial pig slaughterhouse with periodic disinfectant applications is limited. By creating the overall metagenomics-based behavior and risk profiles of ARGs, DRGs, and microbiomes in a nine-section pig slaughterhouse, an important FAPE in China. A total of 454 ARGs and 84 DRGs were detected in the slaughterhouse with resistance genes for aminoglycosides and quaternary ammonium compounds, respectively. The entire slaughtering chain is a hotspot for pathogens, including 83 human pathogenic bacteria (HPB), with 47 core HPB. In addition, 68 high-risk ARGs were significantly correlated with 55 HPB, 30 of which were recognized as potential bacteria co-resistant to antibiotics and disinfectants, confirm a three-fold risk of ARGs, DRGs, and pathogens prevailing throughout the chain. Pre-slaughter pig house (PSPH) was the major risk source for ARGs, DRGs, and HPB. Moreover, 75 Escherichia coli and 47 Proteus mirabilis isolates showed sensitivity to potassium monopersulfate and sodium hypochlorite, suggesting that slaughterhouses should use such related disinfectants. By using whole genome multi-locus sequence typing and single nucleotide polymorphism analyses, genetically closely related bacteria were identified across distinct slaughter sections, suggesting bacterial transmission across the slaughter chain. Overall, this study underscores the critical role of the PSPH section as a major source of HPB, ARGs, and DRGs contamination in commercial pig slaughterhouses. Moreover, it highlights the importance of addressing clonal transmission and cross-contamination of antibiotic- and disinfectant-resistant bacteria within and between slaughter sections. These issues are primarily attributed to the microbial load carried by animals before slaughter, carcass handling, and content exposure during visceral treatment. Several steps in the abattoir can influence the presence of microbes and associated resistance genes (ARGs) on the animal carcasses used for further meat processing. We investigated how these processes influence the resistome-microbiome of groups of pigs with different on-farm antimicrobial exposure status, from the moment they entered the abattoir until the end of carcass processing. Using a targeted enrichment metagenomic approach, we identified 672 unique ARGs conferring resistance to 43 distinct AMR classes from pooled skin (N = 42) and carcass swabs (N = 63) collected sequentially before, during, and after the slaughter process and food safety interventions. We observed significant variations in the resistome and microbial profiles of pigs before and after slaughter, as well as a significant decline in ARG counts, diversity, and microbial DNA load during slaughter and carcass processing, irrespective of prior antimicrobial treatments on the farm. These results suggest that existing interventions in the abattoir are effective in reducing not only the pathogen load but also the overall bacterial burden, including ARGs on pork carcasses. Concomitant with reductions in microbial and ARG counts, we observed an increase in the relative abundance of non-drug-specific ARGs, such as those conferring resistance to metals and biocides, and in particular mercury. Using a strict colocalization procedure, we found that most mercury ARGs were associated with genomes from the Pseudomonadaceae and Enterobacteriaceae families. In response to the rapid emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB) and genes (ARGs), integrated surveillance systems are needed to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within the One Health Era. Wastewater analyses enable biomarker monitoring at the sewershed level, offering timely insights into pathogen circulation and ARB/ARGs trends originating from different compartments. During two consecutive epidemic waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal, taxonomic and functional composition of raw urban wastewater from two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) representing one million in equivalent population, located in the main urban areas of the country, were profiled by shotgun metagenomics. Hospital wastewater from two central hospitals located in the WWTPs catchment areas were also sequenced. The resistome and virulome were profiled using metagenomic assemblies without taxonomic constraint, and then specifically characterized for ESKAPE pathogens. Urban and hospital wastewater exhibited specific microbiota signatures, Pseudomonadota dominated in the first and Bacteroidota in the latter. Correlation network analyses highlighted 85 (out of top 100) genera co-occurring across samples. The most frequent ARGs were classified in the multidrug, tetracyclines, and Macrolides, Lincosamides, Streptogramins (MLS) classes. Links established between AMR determinants and bacterial hosts evidenced that the diversity and abundance of ARGs is not restricted to ESKAPE, being also highly predominant among emergent enteropathogens, like Aeromonas and Aliarcobacter, or in the iron (II) oxidizer Acidovorax. The Aliarcobacter genus accumulated high abundance of sulphonamides and polymyxins ARGs, while Acinetobacter and Aeromonas hosted the highest abundance of ARGs against beta-lactams. Other bacteria (e.g. Clostridioides, Francisella, Vibrio cholerae) and genes (e.g. vanA-type vancomycin resistance) of public health interest were detected, with targeted monitoring efforts being needed to establish informative baseline data. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) carried by gut pathogens may pose a threat to the host and ecological environment. However, few studies focus on the effects of cold stress on intestinal bacteria and ARGs in plateau animals. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing and gene chip technique to explore the difference of gut microbes and ARGs in plateau pika under 4 °C and 25 °C. The results showed that tetracycline and aminoglycoside resistance genes were the dominant ARGs in pika intestine. Seven kinds of high-risk ARGs (aadA-01, aadA-02, ermB, floR, mphA-01, mphA-02, tetM-02) existed in pika's intestine, and cold had no significant effect on the composition and structure of pika's intestinal ARGs. The dominant phyla in pika intestine were Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Cold influenced 0.47 % of pika intestinal bacteria in OTU level, while most other bacteria had no significant change. The diversity and community assembly of intestinal bacteria in pika remained relatively stable under cold conditions, while low temperature decreased gut microbial network complexity. In addition, low temperature led to the enrichment of glycine biosynthesis and metabolism-related pathways. Here we investigated the effects of three types of microplastics (MPs), i.e., PS (P), ABS (B), PVC (V), and each with additive (MPAs) (PA, BA, and VA), on soil health, microbial community, and plant growth in two acidic and slightly alkaline soils. Incubation experiment revealed that although MPs and MPAs consistently stimulated soil nutrients and heavy metals (e.g., Mn, Cu) in weakly alkaline soils, only BA and VA led to increase in soil nutrients and heavy metals in acidic soils. This suggests distinct response patterns in the two soils depending on their initial pH. Concerning microorganisms, MPs and MPAs reduced the assembly degree of bacteria in acidic soils, with a reduction of Chloroflexi and Acidobacteriota but an increase of WPS-2 in VA. Culture experiment showed consistent positive or negative responses in radish seed germination, roots, and antioxidant activity across MPs and MPAs types in both soils, while the responses of seed heavy metals (e.g., Cr, Cd) were consistent in acidic soils but dependent on MPs and MPAs types in alkaline soils. The intensive use of various antibiotics for clinical and agricultural purposes has resulted in their widespread use in wastewater treatment plants. However, little research has been conducted on the effects of antibiotics on nitrite accumulation, antibiotic degradation pathways, or the microbial community structure in nitrification systems. In this study, a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor was used to treat wastewater containing cefalexin (CFX) at different doses (5, 10, 15, and 20 mg/L). The results showed that the nitrification performance was gradually inhibited with increasing CFX concentration. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are more tolerant to CFX than nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Under 15 mg/L of CFX, NOB were completely suppressed, whereas AOB were partially inhibited, as evidenced by an ammonium removal efficiency of 60 % and a 90 % of nitrite accumulation ratio. The partial nitritation was achieved. CFX can be degraded into 2-hydroxy-3phenylpyrazine and cyclohexane through bacterial co-metabolism, and CFX degradation gradually diminishes with decreasing nitrification performance. The abundance of Nitrospira gradually decreased with increasing CFX concentration. Ferruginibacter, Hydrogenophaga, Thauera, and Pseudoxanthomonas were detected at relative abundances of 13.2 %, 0.4 %, 0.9 %, and 1.3 %, respectively, indicating their potential roles in antibiotic degradation. Effectively treating phenolic substances is a crucial task in environmental protection. This study aims to determine whether bacterial-algae biofilm reactors offer superior treatment efficacy compared to traditional activated sludge and biofilm reactors. The average degradation ratios of 2,4-dimethylphenol (40, 70, 150, 300, and 230 mg/L) were found to be 98 %, 99 %, 92.1 %, 84.7 %, and 63.7 % respectively. The bacterial-algae biofilm demonstrates a higher tolerance to toxicity, assimilation ability, and efficacy recovery ability. The cell membrane of Chlorella in the bacteria-algae biofilm is not easily compromised, thus ensuring a stable pH environment. High concentrations of tightly bound extracellular polymers (TB-EPS) enhance the efficacy in treating toxic pollutants, promote the stable structure. Intact Chlorella, bacilli, and EPS were observed in bacterial-algal biofilm. The structural integrity of bacteria-algae consistently enhances its resistance to the inhibitory effects of high concentrations of phenolic compounds. Cloacibacterium, Comamonas, and Dyella were the main functional bacterial genera that facilitate the formation of bacterial-algal biofilms and the degradation of phenolic compounds. The dominant microalgal families include Aspergillaceae, Chlorellales, Chlorellaceae, and Scenedesmaceae have certain treatment effects on phenolic substances. Chlorellales and Chlorellaceae have the ability to convert NH 4 + -N. Mononuclear phosphinite Iridium complexes based on ferrocene group have been prepared and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. The complexes were subjected to cyclic voltammetry studies in order to determine the energies of HOMO and LUMO levels and to estimate their electrochemical and some electronic properties. Organic complex-based memory substrates were immobilized using TiO 2 -modified ITO electrodes, and the memory functions of phosphinite-based organic complexes were verified by chronoamperometry (CA) and open-circuit potential amperometry (OCPA). Extensive theoretical and experimental investigations were directed to gain a more profound understanding of the chemical descriptors and the diverse electronic transitions taking place within the iridium complexes, as well as their electrochemical characteristics. The quantum chemical calculations were carried out for the iridium complexes at the DFT/CAM-B3LYP level of theory in the gas phase. Furthermore, the antioxidant, antimicrobial, DNA binding, and DNA cleavage activities of the complexes were tested. Complex 2 exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity (67.5 ± 2.24 %) at 200.0 mg/L concentration. It was observed that the complexes formed an inhibition zone in the range of 8-15 mm against Gram + bacteria and in the range of 0-13 mm against Gram - bacteria. The agarose gel electrophoresis method was used to determine the DNA binding and DNA cleavage activities of the complexes. Plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer has emerged as a major driver accounting for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Pesticides are widely used to protect crops against vectors of diseases, and are indispensable agents in agricultural production, whereas the impact of pesticide pollution on the transmission of antimicrobial resistance remains poorly understood. Here we reveal that the pesticides at environmentally relevant concentrations, especially cyromazine (Cyr) and kresoxim-methyl (Kre), greatly facilitate the conjugative transfer of antibiotic-resistance plasmids carrying clinically important ARGs. Mechanistic studies indicate that Cyr and Kre treatments trigger reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and SOS response, increase membrane permeability, upregulate bacterial proton motive force (PMF) and promote ATP supply. Further non-targeted metabolomics and biochemical analysis demonstrate that the addition of Cyr and Kre accelerates tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and electron transport chain (ETC), thereby activating bacterial energy metabolism. In the constructed soil model, we prove that two pesticides contribute to the dissemination of resistance plasmids in the soil microbiota. 16S rRNA sequencing analyses indicate that pesticides alter transconjugant microbial communities, and enable more opportunistic pathogens, such as Pseudomonas and Enterobacter, to acquire the multidrug resistance plasmids. The spread of opportunistic pathogens (OPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through drinking water has already caused serious human health issues. There is also an urgent need to know the effects of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on OPs with different ARGs in drinking water. Our results suggested that PFOA accumulation and release from the pipelines induced its concentration in pipelines effluents increase from 0.03 ± 0.01 μg/L to 0.70 ± 0.01 μg/L after 6 months accumulation. The PFOA also promoted the growth of Hyphomicrobium, Microbacterium, and Bradyrhizobium. In addition, PFOA accumulation and release from the pipelines enhanced the metabolism and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle processes, resulting in more extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production. Due to EPS protection, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella pneumophila increased to (7.20 ± 0.09) × 10 4 gene copies/mL, and (8.85 ± 0.11) × 10 2 gene copies/mL, respectively. Moreover, PFOA also enhanced the transfer potential of different ARGs, including emrB, mdtB, mdtC, mexF, and macB. The main bacterial community composition and the main OPs positively correlated with the main ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGE)-ARGs significantly. Therefore, PFOA promoted the propagation of OPs with different ARGs. The need for a systematic approach in developing new metal-based drugs with dual anticancer-antimicrobial properties is emphasized by the vulnerability of cancer patients to bacterial infections. In this context, a novel organometallic assembly was designed, featuring ruthenium(II) coordination with p-cymene, one chlorido ligand, and a bidentate neutral Schiff base derived from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and N,N-dimethylethylenediamine. The compound was extensively characterized in both solid-state and solution, employing single crystal X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and density functional theory, alongside Hirshfeld surface analysis. The hydrolysis kinetic was thoroughly investigated, revealing the important role of the chloro-aqua equilibrium in the dynamics of binding with deoxyribonucleic acid and bovine serum albumin. Notably, the aqua species exhibited a pronounced affinity for deoxyribonucleic acid, engaging through electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions, while the chloro species demonstrated groove-binding properties. Interaction with albumin revealed distinct binding mechanisms. The aqua species displayed covalent binding, contrasting with the ligand-like van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding observed with the chloro specie. Molecular docking studies highlighted site-specific interactions with biomolecular targets. Remarkably, the compound exhibited wide spectrum moderate antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans, coupled with low micromolar cytotoxic activity against human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells and significant activity against human leukemic monocyte lymphoma cells.
