Objective: To evaluate the toxicity of extracts from disposable chopsticks, toothpicks, and paper cups on L-929 cells., Methods: We followed national standards to prepare the extracts from disposable chopsticks, toothpicks, and paper cups used for the cell culture media, and the morphology of L-929 cells was observed with an optical microscope. The loss rate for adherent cells was evaluated with the trypan blue exclusion method, and cell proliferation was determined using the WST-1 assay., Results: Compared with the control group, the cells cultured in media containing the extracts showed signs of apoptosis and necrosis after culturing for 4 or 7 days, and the loss rate for adherent cells was significantly increased (P < 0.05). An obvious decrease in cell viability was also observed (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The extracts from disposable chopsticks, toothpicks, and paper cups can affect the growth and proliferation of L-929 cells and are potentially toxic to humans.

The Cambrian pre-salt dolomite sequence in the Tarim Basin is a target zone of great strategic significance for hydrocarbon exploration in the basin. Using the results of the interpretation of 3D seismic data from Lunnan and 2D seismic data covering the whole basin, and based on a synthesis of outcrop data, drilling data, well logs, core data, and thin-section data, and the findings from previous studies, this paper studies the characteristics of the facies of the Middle–Lower Cambrian in the platform area in the Tarim Basin, the formation and evolution of platform margins, and the sedimentary characteristics, lithofacies, and paleogeographic characteristics of the Middle–Lower Cambrian series. Based on the types of lithofacies and the seismic facies analysis, the sedimentary facies of the Middle–Lower Cambrian strata can be classified into the five types. From bottom to top, the Middle–Lower Cambrian have experienced several development stages, including the deposition of continental shelf sediments of the Yuertusi Formation, gently sloping non-rimmed platform margin sediments of the Xiaoerbulake Formation, weakly rimmed platform margin sediments of the Wusongger and Shayilike formations, and strongly rimmed platform margin sediments of the Awatage Formation. In each stage, the platform margin shifted further east relative to its location in the previous stage. Based on these results and previous studies, the lithofacies and paleogeography maps of the Middle–Lower Cambrian in the Tarim Basin are modified, and the implications for hydrocarbon exploration in this area are discussed. Subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate plays a key role in the Early Jurassic magmatism evolution in the Yanbian area, Northeast China. In this paper, zircon U–Pb ages, whole-rock geochemical, and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic compositions are presented. The Early Jurassic gabbros, diorite enclaves, granodiorites, and granites ages range from 183 to 189 Ma. They are characterized by enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements and depletion in high-field strength elements. The gabbros are classified as low- and medium-K tholeiitic, granodiorites and granites are high-K calc-alkaline I-type, and diorite enclaves are calc-alkaline transitional series. The gabbros have zircon εHf(t) values of 6.81–9.89, whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7043–0.7044, and εNd(t) from 2.72 to 2.80. The diorite enclaves have zircons with εHf(t) values of 8.26–12.80, whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7051, and εNd(t) from 0.96 to 1.09. The granodiorites and granites have zircon εHf(t) values of 7.59–12.87, whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7042–0.7066, and εNd(t) from 2.33 to 2.61. These data indicate that gabbroic magmas were derived from partial melting of a depleted mantle wedge metasomatized by subduction-related fluids. The basaltic magma underplated and heated the juvenile crust, whereas the granodiorites and granites might be the product of fractional crystallization of a mixture of basaltic and felsic magmas or derived from partial melting of the juvenile lower crust. Our data constrain the petrogenesis of these Early Jurassic intrusive rocks which are attributed to subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate beneath Eurasia continent in northeastern China. Forest products trade has a critical role to play in both global economic development and environmental protection. Based on the trade data of global forest products, raw forest products, and processed forest products from 2000 to 2020, this paper constructed a trade network and analyzed its pattern by using indicators such as density, average distance, out-strength, and in-strength. The results show that from 2000 to 2020, the global trade network of forest products has been increasingly connected. Compared with the trade of raw material forest products, the trade network of processed forest products is more closely connected and its transport efficiency is higher. Countries with high GDP such as USA, China, and Germany are leading trading countries in forest products. Countries with abundant forest resources are the major exporters of raw forest products, while labor- and capital-abundant countries are major exporters of processed forest products. Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua is a traditional Chinese herb medicine, and it is widely distributed in China. The intrageneric taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships within Polygonatum have long been controversial due to their morphological similarity and lacking special DNA barcodes. In this paper, the complete chloroplast genome is a relatively conserved quadripartite structure including a large single copy region of 84 711 bp, a small single copy region of 18 210 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats region of 26 142 bp. A total of 342 simple sequence repeats were identified, and most of them were found to be composed of A/T, including 126 mono-nucleotides and 179 di-nucleotides. Nucleotide diversity was analyzed and eight highly variable regions (psbl∼trnT-CGU, atpF∼atpH, trnT-GGU∼psbD, psaJ∼rps20, trnL-UAG∼ndhD, ndhG∼ndhl, ndhA, and rpl32∼ccsA) were identified as potential molecular markers. Phylogenetic analysis based on the whole chloroplast genome showed that P. cyrtonema, within the family Asparagaceae, is closely related to Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum kingianum. The sequence matK, trnT-GGU & ccsA, and ndhG∼ndhA were identified as three DNA barcodes. The assembly and comparative analysis of P. cyrtonema complete chloroplast genome will provide essential molecular information about the evolution and molecular biology for further study. With the application of machine learning rapidly gaining popularity in computer science and other fields, neural network techniques have successfully simulated the performance of in-service pavements as they are efficient in predicting and solving nonlinear relationships and in dealing with uncertain large-area pavement problems. In this paper, we address the problem of the optimal timing of preventive maintenance of asphalt pavements to accurately predict the condition index (pavement condition index, PCI) of highway asphalt pavements and develop a highly accurate, long-period, multifactor prediction model with the suitability of preventive maintenance at its core. The prediction model is called differential evolution particle swarm optimization back propagation (DEPSO-BP) neural network, and the input dimension of the prediction model is determined by gray correlation analysis (GCA), and DEPSO is used to improve the search efficiency of BP neural network and the asphalt pavement usage performance with parameter continuity prediction model. Finally, the Qinglan Highway (G22) PCI of Gansu Province, China, is selected for example validation, and the prediction results are compared with those of the four models. The results show that the multifactor prediction model based on DEPSO-BP neural network has good generalization ability. This model is important for improving the economic efficiency of road maintenance, and can be used in the long-cycle process to provide model reference and scientific basis for the subsequent road maintenance budget application and decision-making scheme. Transfer between the metro (underground railway system) and buses is standard in many cities, and the simultaneous arrival of these two modes can provide passengers with a smoother transfer experience. However, previous synchronous transfer studies rarely consider different public transport modes simultaneously. This paper presents an optimization model that maximizes the number of metro and bus network synchronizations considering the connection level. An improved algorithm that combines simulated annealing (SA) and artificial bee colony (ABC) is proposed. The best nectar source position in history is combined with the SA operation. The ABC and simulated annealing and improved artificial bee colony (SA–IABC) algorithms are used to solve the model using the Nanmendou metro station and the bus stations within 1.2 km around it in Fuzhou City, China. The results show that ABC and improved SA–IABC algorithms increase the synchronization times of the metro and bus network by 17% and 24% on average, respectively, without expanding the departure frequency. Understory small trees and shrubs play a crucial role in the biogeochemical cycles in forest ecosystems. However, their biomass in northeastern China is still uncertain and has been heavily disregarded due to the limited number of available allometric equations. For this study, 782 plants from 33 species obtained by the destructive method were used to develop species-specific and generalized aboveground allometric biomass equations based on collar diameter (D) and height (H) using weighted nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression. Each biomass component was shown to be well predicted by D alone, with R2 adj. values mostly greater than 0.80. The majority of species performed better in the models for wood and aboveground biomass when H was included as D2H. Furthermore, generalized equations for the two components showed a comparatively large coefficient of variation but comparable Bias to species-specific equations, especially for small trees. It is recommended to estimate biomass using generalized equations for mixed species only when species-specific equations are unavailable at a given site. However, in the event when precision is not the primary concern, generalized equations are also suggested. The developed equations will help to improve the accuracy of biomass assessment of understory woody plants in northeastern China forest ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Songliao Basin is rich in uranium ores, and the Yaojia Formation, which is dominated by gray fine-grained sandstones, contains the main ore-bearing stratum. Rocks in the formation contain high SiO2, Al2O3, and total alkali, with enrichment in Rb, Th, U, K, and light rare earth elements but are depleted in high field strength elements, similar to upper crustal rocks. U–Pb dating of zircon grains from sandstones in the formation yielded four groups of ages, including 99–182, 202–245, 284–365, and 1800–1900 Ma. These ages combined with the Hf isotope composition, geochemical characteristics, and regional history suggest that the Yaojia Formation rocks are associated with passive and active continental margin settings. These clastic rocks originate principally from felsic rocks in the Zhangguangcailing–Xiao Xing'anling area, and these were deposited in oxic freshwater environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The grasslands in North China are rich in fungal resources. However, the knowledge of the structure and function of fungal communities and the role of microbial communities in vegetation restoration and succession are limited. Thus, we used an Illumina HiSeq PE250 high-throughput sequencing platform to study the changing characteristics of soil fungal communities in degraded grasslands, which were categorized as non-degraded (ND), lightly degraded, moderately degraded, and severely degraded (SD). Moreover, a correlation analysis between soil physical and chemical properties and fungal communities was completed. The results showed that the number of plant species, vegetation coverage, aboveground biomass, and diversity index decreased significantly with increasing degradation, and there were significant differences in the physical and chemical properties of the soil among the different degraded grasslands. The dominant fungal phyla in the degraded grassland were as follows: Ascomycota, 44.88%–65.03%; Basidiomycota, 12.68%–29.91%; and unclassified, 5.51%–16.91%. The dominant fungi were as follows: Mortierella, 6.50%–11.41%; Chaetomium, 6.71%–11.58%; others, 25.95%–36.14%; and unclassified, 25.56%–53.0%. There were significant differences in the microbial Shannon–Wiener and Chao1 indices between the ND and degraded meadows, and the composition and diversity of the soil fungal community differed significantly as the meadows continued to deteriorate. The results showed that pH was the most critical factor affecting soil microbial and fungal communities in SD grasslands, whereas soil microbial and fungal communities in ND grasslands were mainly affected by water content and other environmental factors. The Huaduoshan Cu–Mo prospect is in the Duobaoshan orefield, northeast China. The Cu–Mo mineralization occurs in the granodiorites as veinlet-disseminated. The ore-forming process can be divided into four mineralization stages: (I) quartz–pyrite–magnetite; (II) quartz–pyrite–chalcopyrite ± molybdenite; (III) quartz–pyrite–molybdenite–chalcopyrite–sphalerite; and (IV) quartz–calcite–minor pyrite. Liquid-rich two-phase aqueous (L-type), vapour-rich aqueous (V-type) and daughter-minerals three-phase (S-type) fluid inclusions (FIs) were identified at Huaduoshan. The last two types of FIs are absent in stages III and IV. The homogenization temperatures of FIs from stages I to IV are 375–438, 335–378, 283–335, and 223–267 ℃, with corresponding salinities of 2.4–50.4, 2.1–44.9, 2.7–10.1, and 1.7–7.3 wt. % NaCl eqv., respectively. The H–O isotope data of quartz in stages I (δ18OH2O = 6.1–8.0‰, δDH2O = −102.4–−94.6‰) show a magmatic origin of ore-forming fluid; the decreasing δ18OH2O (−6.8–3.2‰) and δDH2O (−117.1–−98.5‰) values of quartz in stage II–IV show the fluid mixing with meteoric water. The S–Pb isotopic values (δ34S = −2.7–0.8; 206Pb/204Pb = 18.236–18.599; 207Pb/204 Pb = 15.504–15.557; 208Pb/204Pb = 37.816–38.629) of pyrites indicate that the ore-forming materials are of magmatic origin. Fluid boiling and mixing may be the major mechanisms of ore precipitation. Zircon U–Pb age (172.1 ± 0.5 Ma) and geochemical data indicate that the ore-related granodiorites are I-type rocks formed in the subduction setting of the Paleo-Pacific Ocean Plate in the Early–Middle Jurassic. In conclusion, we propose that the Huaduoshan Cu–Mo prospect is a porphyry deposit and has potential for further exploration of porphyry Cu–Mo prospecting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Yama fluorite deposit in the Qilian Orogen in NW China is characterized by predominant granitic magmatism and fluorite mineralization. The wall rocks hosting the fluorite–quartz veins in the Yama area consist of the Yama porphyritic syenogranite and the Wulandawu syenogranite. In this study, the major and trace element compositions, zircon U–Pb ages, and zircon Hf isotopes and trace element compositions were investigated. Two samples for the Yama porphyritic syenogranite yielded weighted mean 206Pb/238U zircon ages of 440.7 ± 4.8 and 447.9 ± 6.0 Ma, and one sample for the Wulandawu syenogranite yielded a weighted mean 206Pb/238U zircon age of 441.2 ± 5.0 Ma, all of which indicate a Late Ordovician to Early Silurian crystallization age. Geochemically, both syenogranites are peraluminous, with high alkali contents, low Zr + Nb + Ce + Y contents, relatively low (K2O + Na2O)/CaO ratios, and high Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios, suggesting that they are fractionated S-type granites. They have zircon εHf(t) values of −14.9 to −4.4 and −12.2 to −4.5, respectively, suggesting that they were derived from the partial melting of pelitic-rich sources within the relatively shallow Paleoproterozoic reworked crust. The detailed geochronological and geochemical data suggest that the studied syenogranites were emplaced in a post-collisional setting related to the closure of the South Qilian Ocean. Finally, they have relatively low quantitative oxygen fugacity values, indicating relatively reduced redox states, but their very low zircon Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios, low whole-rock K/Rb ratios, relatively high Nb/Ta ratios, and low Zr/Hf ratios suggest that they are not likely to form important W–Sn deposits and related fluorite deposits. To determine the emplacement age, petrogenesis, and geodynamic setting of the Xizhelimu diorite in Keyouzhongqi, Inner Mongolia of northeastern China, a detailed study of the petrography, geochronology, and whole-rock geochemistry has been conducted. Geological and petrographic studies show that the Xizhelimu diorite is zoned: the central lithofacies zone is composed of medium-fine-grained monzodiorite and quartz diorite, and the marginal lithofacies zone is fine-grained diorite. The zircon U–Pb dating results show that the ages of the central and marginal facies are 133.5 ± 1.9 and 133.4 ± 1.4 Ma, respectively. The whole-rock rare earth and trace element characteristics of the Xizhelimu diorite show an O-type adakite affinity. Combining the analysis of zircon Hf isotope composition (εHf(t) values of +7.7 to +10.0), the geochemical features of whole rock, and the results of partial melting modeling, we suggest that the parental magma of the Xizhelimu diorite was derived from the partial melting of altered oceanic crust mixing with subducting sediments at shallow depths. In the early stage of early Cretaceous, the Xizhelimu diorite originated in an extensional setting, mainly related to the closure of the western part of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean. The upwelling asthenospheric flow in this extensional setting induced partial melting of the paleo-oceanic crust to form the parental magma of the Xizhelimu diorite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As one of the most widely used dwarf bamboos, Pleioblastus viridistriatus has well-developed rhizome and root systems, which can rapidly expand into forest stands. However, little is known about the influence of P. viridistriatus expansion on the undergrowth diversity in subtropical forests of China and its association with the diversity of soil bacterial microbiota. The species diversity and soil bacterial community structure were investigated in a forest where P. viridistriatus was expanding into coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest. We found that P. viridistriatus expansion reduced species diversity in the shrub and herbaceous layers and had significant effects on major soil physicochemical properties. In addition, the alpha diversity indexes were significantly increased and the abundance of Actinobacteria and Candidatus Saccharibacteria increased, while the abundance of Nitrospirae and Deinococcus-Thermus decreased with the increasing expansion. At the genus level, a total of 25 genera of soil bacteria showed significant difference in abundance. Overall, expansion of P. viridistriatus reduced forest species diversity, while increased soil nutrient accumulation and specific bacterial abundance to improve nutrient acquisition. The disposal of increased quantities of dewatered sewage sludge to landfills may cause geoenvironmental problems such as leachability, total and differential settlement, and slope stability of the waste during disposal. This study investigates the geotechnical properties of the dewatered sewage sludge generated from chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) in Hong Kong. Compaction test results show that CEPT sludge exhibits compaction characteristics similar to those of clayey soils; however, the lowest hydraulic conductivity of CEPT sludge does not occur near the wet side of its optimum water content. The consolidation behavior of CEPT sludge does not follow the conventional Terzaghi's theory. Under an overburden pressure higher than 24 kPa, the relationship between the logarithm of the hydraulic conductivity (logk) and the void ratio (e) is linear. Results from direct shear tests reveal that, for CEPT sludge, slopes of 20° can probably be constructed during the landfill operation without causing sliding problems. Compared with the disposal of pure CEPT sludge, the co-disposal of dewatered sewage sludge with other solid wastes commonly found in Hong Kong results in lower compressibility, smaller settlement, but higher hydraulic conductivity.Key words: co-disposal, geotechnical properties, landfill disposal, sewage sludge.L'entreposage de quantités croissantes de boues d'égouts asséchées dans des sites d'enfouissement peut causer des problèmes géoenvironnementaux tels que le lessivage, un tassement différentiel ou total, l'instabilité de la pente de la boue durant l'entreposage. Cet article étudie les propriétés géotechniques de la boue d'égout asséchée générée par le traitement chimique primaire (CEPT) à Hong Kong. The recent discovery of the early dromaeosaurid Sinornithosaurus millenii Xu et al. 1999 is especially important for our understanding of maniraptoran evolution, particularly of avian origins. This paper presents a thorough description of the skull of this species, revises the diagnosis based on cranial features, and discusses similarities to those of other dromaeosaurids and Archaeopteryx. Distinctive cranial characteristics of S. millenii include the presence of a deep excavation on the posteroventral margin of the premaxilla, a diastema between the premaxillary and maxillary teeth, a number of pits and ridges on the anterolateral surface of the antorbital fossa, long posterolateral process of the parietal that are sharply posteriorly directed, the column-like margin of the pterygoid process of the quadrate, the bifurcated posterior end of the dentary, and a distinctive groove posterior to the anterior carina on the lingual surface of the premaxillary tooth crowns. The present study on the skull of S. millenii provides new information on the poorly known cranial anatomy of dromaeosaurid dinosaurs, revealing that dromaeosaurids share more similarities with Archaeopteryx than previously thought. It also provides evidence suggesting that early dromaeosaurids are more bird-like than the later, more derived ones, thus contradicting claims that more bird-like dinosaurs appeared later in fossil record than the earliest birds.La découverte récente du dromæosauridé précoce Sinornithosaurus millenii Xu et al., 1999, est spécialement importante pour notre compréhension de l'évolution des rapaces, surtout ceux d'origine aviaire. Cet article présente une étude complète du crâne de cette espèce, révise le diagnostic crânien et discute de ses similitudes avec ceux d'autres dromæosauridés et d'Archaeopteryx. The reclamation for the new airport at Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong included the placement of a substantial volume of sand fill by various hydraulic placement techniques, which resulted in a wide range of as-placed densities of the sand fill. This paper described the use of cone penetration tests (CPT) on the evaluation of the possible ranges of density achievable by various hydraulic placement methods adopted in the construction of the new airport. The results of the CPT indicated that the placement technique is one of the most important factors in controlling the as-placed density of hydraulically placed sand fill. There is a marked contrast in cone tip resistance (and the associated relative density) profiles for the sand fills formed by subaerial and subaqueous placement methods, in which the cone tip resistance of the sand fill formed by subaerial placement is substantially higher than that of the sand fill formed by subaequeous placement. The results confirm that dense sand fill cannot be formed by subaqueous placement methods. The weakest zone is generally located just beneath the water level where fill is placed by subaqueous discharge.Key words: sand, hydraulic fill, cone penetration test, calibration chamber test, in situ density.Le remblayage pour le nouvel aéroport à Chek Lap Kok de Hong Kong comprend la mise en place d'un volume substantiel de remblai de sable par différentes techniques de mise en place hydraulique, qui ont résulté en une large plage de densités en place du remblai de sable. Cet article décrit l'utilisation de l'essai de pénétration au cône (CPT) pour l'évaluation des plages possibles de densité qui peuvent être obtenues par différentes méthodes de mises an place hydrauliques adoptées pour la construction du nouvel aéroport. Les résultat de CPT indiquent que la technique de mise en place est un des facteurs les plus importants pour le contrôle de la densité en place de sable remblayé par méthode hydraulique. Il y a un contraste marqué entre les profils de résistance à la pointe (et la densité relative correspondante) pour les remblais de sable mis en place par des méthodes subaériennes ou sous l'eau, le premier étant appréciablement plus élevé. Les résultats confirment qu'un remblai de sable dense ne peut pas être obtenu par des méthode de mise en place sous l'eau.
