The "communication-failure" hypothesis states that individuals whose agonistic displays deviate from the population norm are selected against because of the greater likelihood of their becoming involved in escalated contests. A corollary of this hypothesis is that the level of aggression in dyadic (pairwise) contests over resources is predicted to be higher the greater the behavioural divergence between the two contestants. Display divergence between two contestants from different populations should exceed that in intrapopulation dyads, consequently this prediction can be tested by comparing levels of aggression in contests between interpopulation dyads with those in contests between intrapopulation dyads. We carried out such a test using brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) from two isolated populations in eastern Newfoundland. In initial encounters, the nipping rate (a measure of aggressiveness) of individuals from one of these populations was significantly higher in interpopulation dyads than in intrapopulation dyads. These results are consistent with the communication-failure hypothesis, as well as with the view that behavioural assessment, using low-cost stereotypic displays, reduces the cost of interactions over resources for both contestants. The Taconian Humber Zone stretches from western Newfoundland to southern Quebec. The Early Cambrian slope succession in Newfoundland is found in the Curling Group, whereas in Quebec, various units were deposited during that first time slice. Biostratigraphic data allow correlation of the Curling Group with the Labrador Group in Newfoundland and with the newly time-constrained slope succession in Quebec. The end of the rift drift transition is marked by a sea-level lowstand at the end of the Early Cambrian. The Middle Cambrian to latest Early Ordovician passive margin history recorded five cyclic sea-level fluctuations. Three of these cycles are recorded in the shallow-marine Middle to Late Cambrian platform (Port au Port Group) and slope sediments preserved in the Cow Head and Northern Head groups in Newfoundland. The biostratigraphic information assists correlation with Cambrian passive margin units in Quebec. Major sea-level lowstands are recognized along the continental margin in early-middle Late Cambrian (Steptoan) and in late Late Cambrian (Sunwaptan). Even if the Quebec succession can be tied with its Newfoundland correlative, some significant differences in the nature of Upper Cambrian slope conglomerates argue for a tectonic control on the depth of erosion of the Cambrian continental margin. The Lower Ordovician record of the passive margin consists of two depositional cycles (Tremadocian-Arenigian) separated by a sea-level lowstand. Geochronological studies on the timing of deformation and metamorphism along the Laurentian margin have shown that the ages of metamorphic events change along-strike within the Newfoundland southern Quebec segment of the Canadian Appalachians. The Gaspé Peninsula is located at mid-point of the two extremities of this segment. New single-grain laser [sup40]Ar/[sup39]Ar plateau ages solely reflect latest Middle Late Ordovician metamorphism. Samples taken within the internal Humber zone in the Shickshock Group rocks yield [sup40]Ar/[sup39]Ar muscovite and hornblende ages ranging from 457 to 454 Ma. Samples from the Amphibolite du Diable, the metamorphic sole of the Mont Albert ophiolite, yield [sup40]Ar/[sup39]Ar muscovite and hornblende ages ranging from 459 to 457 Ma. Ordovician ages of the internal Humber zone are consistent with [sup40]Ar/[sup39]Ar ages from southern Quebec and arc interpreted as the result of the emplacement onto the margin of both the ophiolitc and its metamorphic sole. In the Humber Arm area of the western Newfoundland Appalachians, four distinct stratigraphic successions derived from the Laurentian continental margin are exposed. Each succession is believed to be characteristic of a separate thrust sheet. The platform sheet represents the ancient Laurentian shell and its foreland basin cover; the Watsons Brook sheet is characterized by a succession including shelf-margin carbonates overlying foreland basin clastics; the Corner Brook sheet comprises continental slope and rise clastic and carbonate sedimentary rocks of the Humber Arm Supergroup; and the Woods Island sheet includes clastics of the Blow Me Down Brook formation that overlie mafic volcanics. Sheets are subdivided by thrusts into tectonic slices. Disrupted units and mélange, with scaly S[sub1] foliation, are found along the boundaries of some slices. Thrust sheets and related structures have been deformed by F[sub2] folds with axial planar S[sub2] cleavage. S[sub1] scaly foliations are transposed into parallelism with S[sub2]. There is a transition in the style of F[sub2] folds across the area, from upright and subhorizontal in the west to overturned folds with west-dipping axial planes and steeply raking or reclined fold hinges in the cast. Strongly curved fold hinges may reflect later shearing along the S[sub2] surfaces, producing sheath-like fold geometries. Shear zones close to the cast edge of the outcrop of the Watsons Brook sheet display kinematic indicators indicating both D[sub2] reverse-sense and D[sub3] normal-sense dip-slip shears. Subsequent events produced L[sub4] and L[sub5] crenulation lineations on the S[sub2] surfaces. The Sops Head Complex of Badger Bay, central Newfoundland, includes olistostromal and tectonized mélanges and marks the Red Indian Line, the boundary between the peri-Gondwanan Exploits and peri-Laurentian Notre Dame subzones of the oceanic Dunnage Zone. Basalts in the olistostromal mélange preserve peperitic contacts with mudstone and limestone within slumped sedimentary units, demonstrating that magmatism was coeval with olistostrome formation. Conodonts from the limestones date these events as late Darriwilian ("Llandeilian," Middle Ordovician) in age. The conodont fauna consists entirely of North Atlantic Faunal Realm elements, suggesting a peri-Gondwanan or mid-Iapetan provenance for limestone of the Sops Head Complex. Basalt geochemistry suggests magmatism in a mature volcanic-arc to back-arc setting. We report amphibole and mica [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar ages from the Makkovik Province. Amphibole ages from metamorphic rocks decrease towards the interior of the province, indicating a first-order pattern of monotonic cooling with progressive migration of the province into a more distal back-arc location. The amphibole data, in combination with muscovite ages, reveal a second-order pattern consisting of four stages corresponding to changing spatial and temporal configurations of plutonism and deformation. (1) The western Kaipokok domain cooled through muscovite closure by 1810 Ma, long after the cessation of arc magmatism. (2) The Kaipokok Bay shear zone, bounding the Kaipokok and Aillik domains, cooled through amphibole closure during 1805–1780 Ma, synchronous with emplacement of syn-tectonic granitoid plutons. (3) Between 1740 and 1700 Ma, greenschist-facies shearing occurred along the boundary between the Kaipokok domain and Nain Province synchronous with A-type plutonism and localized shearing in the western Kaipokok domain, cooling to muscovite closure temperatures in the Kaipokok Bay shear zone, and A-type plutonism and amphibole closure or resetting in the Aillik domain. (4) In the period 1650–1640 Ma, muscovite ages, an amphibole age from a shear zone, and resetting of plutonic amphibole indicate a thermal effect coinciding in part with Labradorian plutonism in the Aillik domain. Amphibole ages from dioritic sheets in the juvenile Aillik domain suggest emplacement between 1715 and 1685 Ma. Amphibole ages constrain crystallization of small mafic plutons in the Kaipokok domain (reworked Archean foreland) to be no younger than 1670–1660 Ma. The Makkovik Province is a segment of a Paleoproterozoic accretionary belt (the Makkovik–Ketilidian orogen) that developed on the southern margin of Laurentia at 1.9–1.7 Ga. In contrast to coeval Laurentian orogenic belts that mainly resulted from collision of Archean plates, Makkovikian–Ketilidian orogenesis was dominated by active-margin processes including continental margin arc plutonism and juvenile terrane accretion, both of which were accompanied by regional transpression. In the Makkovik Province, earliest deformation and amphibolite-facies metamorphism of Paleoproterozoic rift–drift assemblages (Post Hill and Moran Lake groups) and the Archean foreland (Nain Province) occurred at 1.9 Ga in response to accretion of a Paleoproterozoic island arc. Following this collision, cratonward-dipping subduction was established, resulting in the formation of the 1895–1870 Ma Island Harbour Bay Plutonic Suite, a calc-alkaline magmatic arc built on reworked Archean crust. Crust formation continued between ca. 1860 and 1850 Ma with deposition of the Aillik Group on a largely juvenile basement in a rifted-arc or back-arc setting. Sometime before 1802 Ma this depositional basin was tectonically inverted, with resultant northwestward thrusting of the Aillik Group over reworked Archean crust. This phase of deformation may have been driven by accretion of a second island arc potentially represented by the Cape Harrison Metamorphic Suite. Regional transpression and amphibolite-facies metamorphism at ca. 1815–1780 Ma were accompanied by widespread granitoid plutonism. These events were mainly concentrated in the juvenile domains and are thought to reflect processes in a broad continental back-arc setting. A final orogenic pulse, marked by regional greenschist-facies transpression and emplacement of A-type granitoid plutons, occurred between 1740 and 1700 Ma, with deformation and plutonism potentially linked to crust–mantle detachment and incursion of mafic magmas at the base of the crust, respectively. The record of crustal development suggests that the coeval themes of spatially and temporally linked structural and plutonic activity, oceanward migration of this activity over time, and a trend toward increasingly more localized deformation occurred throughout the orogenic history of the Makkovik Province. These characteristics are thought to broadly reflect oceanward crustal growth of the orogen over time. In the correlative Ketilidian mobile belt of southern Greenland, these themes were also operative but appear to have been less pronounced, most likely due to minimal or a complete absence of accretion of island-arc material.La Province de Makkovik est un segment d'une ceinture d'accrétion paléoprotérozoïque (l'orogène Makkovik–kétilidien) qui s'est développée sur la bordure sud de la Laurentia vers 1,9–1,7 Ga. The Aillik domain of the Makkovik Province is dominated by deformed and metamorphosed sedimentary and bimodal volcanic rocks of the redefined Aillik Group and abundant unfoliated late- to post-orogenic plutonic rocks. Mapping and petrological studies in the Makkovik Bay area of the Aillik domain showed that the upper part of the group, in addition to felsic volcanic rocks, also includes extensive areas of hypabyssal, foliated granitic rocks (Measles Point Granite). Although petrochemically similar to the spatially associated felsic volcanic rocks, a new U–Pb (zircon) age of 1929 Ma suggests that the Measles Point Granite may be about 70 million years older than the volcanic rocks of the Aillik Group, based on published U–Pb dates for the latter unit. The volcanic and granitic rocks show similar structural and metamorphic history, and both have characteristics of crust-derived A-type felsic rocks, although the granite shows less chemical variation than the felsic volcanic rocks. A within-plate setting is postulated, although the associated mafic metavolcanic rocks and amphibolite dykes show evidence of a volcanic-arc influence. Possible solutions of the paradox presented by the U–Pb ages imply that the Measles Point Granite either represents the juvenile basement to the Aillik Group or was derived from a basement with a large juvenile component. The setting for deposition of the Aillik Group that is consistent with current tectonic models for the Makkovik Province is a rifted arc built on a juvenile terrane accreted to Archean crust.Le domaine d'Aillik de la Province de Makkovik est dominé par des roches sédimentaires et volcaniques bimodales déformées et métamorphosées du Groupe d'Aillik redéfini et d'abondantes roches plutoniques non feuilletées post-orogéniques tardives. The Long Range Mountains of Newfoundland expose the northeastern most basement inlier of the Appalachian Orogen. U–Pb results for two samples of basement gneiss reveal crustal formation ages of 1466 ± 10 Ma (Western Brook Pond charnockite) and 1530 ± 8 Ma (Cat Arm Road gneiss), indicating an affinity with Pinwarian magmatism (1510–1450 Ma) in Labrador. A third sample of basement gneiss from the Cat Arm Road dam site yielded a minimum formation age of 1631 Ma. These basement gneisses were intruded by granite plutons during two periods of Grenvillian magmatism; Group I at 1032–1022 Ma and Group II at 993–985 Ma. Group I intrusions include the 1032.0 ± 1.5 Ma Lomond River granite and the 1022.0 ± 2.0 Ma Lake Michel igneous suite; Group II intrusions include the 999 ± 4 Ma Potato Hill charnockite, 993 ± 7 Ma Horse Chops granite, 984.9 ± 1.6 Ma Cloud River granite, and may include the Apsy granite. The metamorphic history of the Long Range Inlier is complex and three discrete Proterozoic metamorphic events can be delineated on the basis of field relationships and U–Pb dates for metamorphic minerals. M[sub 1] metamorphism is a regional high-grade event that occurred prior to 1032 Ma, the emplacement age for the unmetamorphosed Lomond River granite. M[sub 2] and M[sub 3] occurred at 1022 and 989 Ma, respectively; coinciding with the two main periods of Grenvillian magmatism. The Precambrian crustal evolution of the Long Range Inlier is very similar to the Pinware terrane of Labrador, consistent with a single contiguous terrane presently separated by the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A surprising discovery from this study is identification of the first known occurrence of Silurian mafic magmatism in the Long Range Inlier, the 430.5 ± 2.5 Ma Taylor Brook gabbro.L'enclave du socle le plus au nord-est de l'orogène des Appalaches affleure dans les montagnes du Long Range à Terre-Neuve. The crustal structure of the eastern Grenville and Makkovik provinces was determined using two onshore–offshore refraction seismic lines of the Lithoprobe Eastern Canadian Shield Onshore–Offshore Transect (ECSOOT). A gravity high in the Hawke River terrane correlates with increased P-wave velocities in the upper 30 km of the crust (6.2–6.7 km/s in the upper and middle crust and 6.9–7.1 km/s below) which we interpret as structure inherited from the Labradorian orogen. Velocities in the adjacent Groswater Bay terrane are 6.0–6.55 km/s in the upper and middle crust and 6.6–6.95 km/s in the lower crust. The entire Grenville crust is underlain by a 15–20 km thick high-velocity lower crustal (HVLC) wedge consisting of an upper layer (7.1–7.4 km/s) and a lower layer (7.6–7.8 km/s). The HVLC wedge is interpreted as an underplated layer formed during Iapetan rifting. This interpretation is based on the correlation with the 615 Ma Long Range dykes onshore and the eastward termination of the wedge at the Cartwright Arch. Similar HVLC layers are found offshore western Newfoundland, suggesting that the underplating may be a continuous feature along the passive Grenvillian margin. The Cartwright Arch is characterized by velocities of 6.4 km/s and 4 km thick sediment sequences (4.3–5.7 km/s) in the surrounding basin, interpreted as an extensional basin with basaltic magmatism within the arch. The Grenville front is clearly marked by a decrease of velocities in the Makkovik Province (5.8–6.4 km/s in the upper and middle crust, 6.65–6.85 km/s in the lower crust) and a gradual thickening of the crust (not including the HVLC layer) from 30 km in the Grenville Province to 35 km in the Makkovik Province.La structure crustale de l'est des provinces de Grenville et de Makkovik a été déterminée en utilisant les données de deux lignes de réfraction sismique du transect Lithoprobe des zones continentales et extracôtières de la partie l'est du Bouclier canadien (ECSOOT, Eastern Canadian Shield Onshore-Offshore Transect). A geological disaster occurs when natural geological processes impact on our activities, either through loss of life or injury or through economic loss. A geological hazard is a potential disaster. Geological hazard in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador was studied by archival research using a variety of sources to document the historical record of disaster. This record, although undoubtedly incomplete and selective, demonstrates that the province was affected by numerous geological disasters that inflicted a major economic and social cost. At least 80 people have been killed in Newfoundland and Labrador since 1863 in such incidents, including debris flows, rockfalls, avalanches, and tsunamis. Many Newfoundland communities have developed at the base of steep slopes and are therefore prone to landslides and avalanches or are built adjacent to the coast and are susceptible to storm damage. The economic cost is difficult to estimate, but remedial measures for individual events range from Can$ 20 000 for the construction of 50 m of gabions and retaining walls to Can$ 3 000 000 for community-level coastal flood-protection measures. Many of the documented geological disasters were unavoidable and were the inevitable result of geography. However, some were predictable and therefore preventable, either because a similar event had previously occurred in the same area or because geological factors, such as rapid coastal erosion or rising relative sea levels, were not considered during the planning process. The identification of serious avalanche and rockfall hazards in the Battery, St. John's, has led to installation of protective measures. Archival research methods provide a cheap, effective, and useful means of defining regional geological hazard. The Wild Bight Group and correlative plutonic rocks of the South Lake Igneous Complex comprise one of the accreted, Ordovician, peri-Gondwanan, oceanic terranes of the Newfoundland Appalachians. Recent field work and isotopic ages from the eastern Wild Bight Group require that the stratigraphic sequence be redefined. A package of bimodal volcanic rocks, which forms the oldest part of the group and contains all of its volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, is redefined as the Glovers Harbour Formation. This formation is correlative with intra-oceanic ophiolitic sequences elsewhere in the Exploits Subzone. Previous stratigraphic nomenclature for the upper Wild Bight Group is largely retained, although the lithological variation within and spatial distribution of the Omega Point, Seal Bay Brook, and Pennys Brook formations are revised, and the Side Harbour Formation is included as part of the Seal Bay Brook Formation. The upper Wild Bight Group is interpreted to represent a second and distinct arc sequence that formed on the Gondwanan continental margin. There is a ca. 10 million-year hiatus in volcanic activity between the Glovers Harbour Formation and upper Wild Bight Group, although marine sedimentation was likely continuous during this time. This hiatus corresponds with Penobscot deformation and obduction of Exploits Subzone ophiolites onto the Gander Zone farther to the east and south. The Glovers Harbour Formation is correlated with the Tea Arm and Saunders Cove formations of the Exploits Group, whereas the upper Wild Bight Group can be correlated in some detail with the New Bay and Lawrence Head formations. The upper Wild Bight Group and correlative rocks of the Exploits Group are interpreted to represent the arc and back arc, respectively, of the same Middle Ordovician arc system.Le Groupe de Wild Bight et les roches plutoniques corrélatives du Complexe ignée de South Lake comprennent l'un des terranes océaniques accrétés des Appalaches de Terre-Neuve (Ordovicien, péri-Gondwana). Almost sixty years after the initial mapping of extensive Quaternary sediments along the coast of St. George's Bay, Newfoundland, a revised stratigraphic section is presented which identifies five main sediment types (diamicton, mud, sand, gravelly sand, gravel) and their stratigraphical position along 39 km of coastline from Highlands to Flat Bay. Most of the sediments overlying a basal till (St. George's River Drift) are interpreted to have been deposited in an ice-proximal to ice-distal glaciomarine environment by debris flow, underflow, current flow, or suspension settling, and capped by glaciofluvial outwash (Bay St. George Delta). For the most part, sections display a relatively simple deglacial sequence in a shallowing marine to fluvial environment. Where hummocky ridges intersect the coast, however, the sedimentary sequences are more complex and the variability in depositional style is typical of grounding line fans at a tidewater glacier margin. The occurrence of an upper diamicton or coarse gravels (Robinsons Head Drift) was generally observed only in grounding-line fan sequences and is interpreted here in the context of marginal fluctuations of a quasi-stable tidewater glacier, and not necessarily a climatically-induced readvance of a land-based ice margin (Robinsons Head readvance). Radiocarbon dates on marine shells from varied stratigraphic positions and sedimentary units suggest rapid deposition occurred in a glaciomarine environment between 14 and 13 ka BP.Près de soixante ans après la cartographie initiale de sédiments quaternaires largement répandus le long de la côte de la baie St. George, à Terre-Neuve, nous présentons une section stratigraphique révisée qui identifie cinq types principaux de sédiments (diamicton, boue, sable, sable graveleux, gravier) et leurs positions stratigraphiques le long de 39 km de côte, de Highlands à Flat Bay. Paleoproterozoic granitoid rocks in the Island Harbour Bay area (Kaipokok domain, Makkovik Province, Labrador) are divided into four separate suites on the basis of field relations, petrology, and age. The redefined Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite consists of ca. 1895–1870 Ma dioritic to granitic (mainly granodioritic and granitic) units. The rocks are variably foliated as a result of emplacement under amphibolite-facies conditions in a dextral transpressive regime during Andean-type subduction. The dominant mafic mineral is biotite, and accessory epidote, allanite, and titanite are abundant. The suite is calc-alkalic, but with rare-earth element patterns similar to those of Archean tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic suites. It is interpreted to have formed deep in an Andean-type magmatic arc at the margin of the Nain continent. In contrast, the younger Hares Islands and Drunken Harbour granites (emplaced at ca. 1805 and 1790 Ma, respectively) were part of widespread late-orogenic magmatic activity in the Makkovik Province. In contrast to the Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite, these units retain igneous textures and are either unfoliated or display magmatic foliation, locally modified by emplacement in active shear zones. The ca. 1716 Ma Blacklers Bight granite varies from porphyritic to equigranular, is fluorite-bearing, and has chemical features approaching those of continental A-type granites. Similar granite occurs farther south in the Makkovik Province, reflecting widespread anorogenic magmatic activity at that time, perhaps related to mafic magma underplating. Variable interaction with Archean (Nain Province) crust by granitic magmas of all three ages is evidenced by ℇ[sub Nd ] values ranging from –7.2 to –2.5.Les roches granitoïdes paléoprotérozoïques de la région de Island Harbour Bay (domaine de Kaipokok, province de Makkovik, au Labrador) sont divisées en quatre suites distinctes selon les relations de terrain, la pétrologie et l'âge. New U–Pb zircon, titanite, and monazite ages reported here, along with existing age data, demonstrate that granitoid bodies in the northwestern segment of the Paleoproterozoic Makkovik Province, Labrador, are of three distinct ages. The redefined Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite consists of varied dioritic to granitic units that were syntectonically emplaced into Archean crust of the Kaipokok domain between ca. 1895 Ma and 1870 ± 2 Ma. This plutonism occurred during the early stages of the Makkovikian Orogeny in an obliquely convergent, Andean continental margin setting. The Hares Islands and Drunken Harbour granites form smaller, discrete plutons that were emplaced in or adjacent to the Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite at 1805 ± 5 Ma and 1791 ± 2 Ma, respectively, during dextral strike-slip deformation that accompanied accretion of an outboard juvenile terrane. Magmatic activity during this period was preferentially sited along active structural zones, but also occurred outside of these zones. The undeformed Blacklers Bight A-type granite was emplaced in the Kaipokok domain at 1716 ± 1 Ma, late in the development of the orogen. A-type granites of this age form a significant component of the southeastern Makkovik Province, and their generation is linked to mafic underplating and heterogeneous regional extension. The new age data support the conclusion of earlier workers that crustal growth via synorogenic and postorogenic plutonism was episodic, and allow, along with field and geochemical data, inferences to be made regarding the tectonic setting of individual plutonic events.Les nouveaux âges U–Pb sur du zircon, de la titanite et de la monazite, rapportés ici avec certaines données d'âge déjà existantes, démontrent que des amas granitoïdes dans le segment nord-ouest de la province de Makkovik, du Paléoprotérozoïque, au Labrador, sont de trois âges distincts. The Cape Cormorant Formation of the Table Head Group exposed on the Port au Port Peninsula, western Newfoundland, is composed of dark-brown to black shales with interbeds of thin calcareous silty and sandy distal turbidites. Distinctive carbonate conglomerates and breccias derived from the foundering shelf are occasionally found in the formation. The sediments accumulated in the foreland basin formed during the early stage of the Taconic orogeny. The faunas from the upper part of the Cape Cormorant Formation include graptolites, conodonts, and chitinozoans. The graptolites are well preserved, but are of low diversity and are referred to the Darriwil Pterograptus elegans Zone. Conodonts recorded from the distal turbidites are rare and fragmented. The faunas include taxa that are known from the St. George and Table Head groups. The conodont fauna is tentatively assigned to the Histiodella kristinae Phylozone and to the younger, unzoned interval. The chitinozoans are well preserved and the yield is high. The fauna is assigned to the Cyathochitina jenkinsi Zone and to an undefined interval. The abundance and diversity of the chitinozoan assemblages display a cyclic pattern, which is related to changes of the oceanic watermass in the foreland basin. The new chitinozoan species Belonechitina nevillensis n. sp., Belonechitina uniformipunctata n. sp., and Cyathochitina cormorani n. sp. are described.La Formation de Cape Cormorant du Groupe de Table Head affleurant dans la péninsule de Port au Port, dans l'ouest de Terre-Neuve, est composée de schistes argileux brun foncé à noirs avec de minces interlits de turbidites distales, calcareuses, silteuses et sablonneuses. La faune de la partie supérieure de la Formation de Cape Cormorant comprend des Graptolites, des Conodontes et des Chitinozoaires. Les Graptolites sont bien conservés, mais faiblement diversifiés, et ils sont rattachés à la zone Pterograptus elegans de Darriwil. Les Conodontes provenant de turbidites distales sont rares et fragmentés. La faune comprend des taxons qui sont connus des groupes de St. George et de Table Head. La faune des Conodontes est provisoirement assignée à la phylozone Histiodella kristinae et à l'intervalle plus jeune qui n'est pas zoné. Les Chitinozoaires sont bien préservés et abondants. La faune est assignée à la zone Cyathochitina jenkinsi et à un intervalle indéfini. Wet boreal forests occur primarily in Atlantic Canada especially in Newfoundland, but examples are also found in Quebec and the northeastern U.S.A. These forests are dominated by balsam fir (Abies balsamea), which is susceptible to fire but flourishes in wetter environments where fire is absent. The major stand disturbances are caused by insects, primarily spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) and hemlock looper (Lambdina fiscellaria), followed by root rots and blowdown. Stands in Newfoundland were characterized by large amounts of dead standing and fallen wood, as a result of self-thinning processes and insect attacks. A comparison of 40-, 60-, and >= 80-year-old forests in Newfoundland indicated that the oldest stage of balsam fir forests had a distinctly different structure, including more large dead and fallen wood, a more irregular canopy including gaps, a more diverse ground flora, more moss ground cover, a more variable tree height, taller snags, fewer white birch snags, and fewer deciduous small trees. These differences were reflected in various plant and animal faunas that were distinct in the old forest including: flowering plants, beetles, Collembola, oribatid mites, mammals, and birds. Several species of plants and animals were only found in the oldest forest stands, including a high percentage among the arthropods. Suggested indicator species at the stand level include black-backed woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) and marten (Martes americana). Logging results in a larger mean patch size than that caused by natural insect disturbances, possibly affecting dispersal by soil organisms and plants within the new landscape. A portion of the landscape, keyed to species with the largest area requirements to maintain their populations, including marten, black-backed woodpeckers, and (or) boreal owls (Aegolius funereus) could guide the amount of old forest, and individual patch sizes, required across a landscape over time. Il en existe également au Québec et dans le Nord-Est des États-Unis. Dans ces forêts domine le sapin baumier (Abies balsamea), sensible au feu, qui prospère dans les milieux plus humides où le feu est absent. Les principales sources de perturbation des peuplements sont les insectes, plus particulièrement la tordeuse des bourgeons de l'épinette (Choristoneura fumiferana) et l'arpenteuse de la pruche ( Lambdina fiscellaria), puis les pourridiés et les chablis. À Terre-Neuve, les peuplements se caractérisent par des quantités importantes d'arbres morts sur pied et de bois au sol résultant des processus d'éclaircie naturelle et des attaques d'insectes. Une comparaison de forêts terre-neuviennes de 40, 60 et 80+ ans a indiqué que, par rapport aux peuplements de 40 ou 60 ans, les sapinières les plus âgées présentent une structure nettement différente, se caractérisant, entre autres, par une plus grande quantité de gros bois morts, un étage supérieur plus irrégulier avec des trouées, une flore au sol plus diversifiée, une strate muscinée plus abondante, une hauteur des arbres plus variable, des chicots de plus grande hauteur, moins de chicots de bouleau à papier et moins de petits arbres feuillus. Ces différences se reflètent dans diverses composantes de la flore et de la faune qui sont distinctes dans la vieille forêt (plantes à fleurs, coléoptères, collemboles, acariens oribates, mammifères et oiseaux, entre autres). Plusieurs espèces végétales et animales, dont un pourcentage élevé d'arthropodes, n'ont été trouvées que dans les peuplements forestiers les plus âgés.
