This article presents a history of the development of U–Pb geochronology with emphasis on the role of Canadian researchers and some of its applications to Canadian geology. Modern U–Pb dating is the result of work by many individuals over the past 60 years, but the most important was Tom Krogh, who established methods that allowed determination of precise ages (<0.1% errors) on zircon using isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry. This was followed by the introduction of new analytical approaches by others, notably secondary ion mass spectrometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry that allow intracrystal domains to be dated. U–Pb geochronology is now an indispensable tool for understanding the Earth. In collaboration with field mapping, it has vastly improved our understanding of the geological history of Canada as well as important geological events such as mass extinctions, secular changes in geological processes, and the birth of the solar system. Utilizing a combination of conodont-based biostratigraphy and geochemistry, the Frasnian–Famennian (F/F, mid-Late Devonian) boundary was located in the Long Rapids Formation, northern Ontario. It is present in a black shale sequence, 21.46 m above the base of the Long Rapids Formation, just above a carbonate bed that has similarities to the Upper Kellwasser Limestone, recognized as a lithological marker for the F/F boundary in Germany, Belgium, and France. There is no evidence of an impact event, and sedimentation across the boundary is continuous, although there is a discontinuity layer just below the boundary and the early part of the linguiformis Zone (of the standard Late Devonian conodont zonation) is missing. Strong positive δ [sup 13] C (organic and carbonate) values were identified and are interpreted as evidence of mass mortality in anoxic waters at the F/F extinction; positive δ[sup 18] O values suggest the extinction was also accompanied by a temperature drop. Negative δ[sup 34] S values also indicate anoxia, and negative δ[sup 15] N values provide evidence of reduced surface-water productivity. No iridium anomaly was found at the boundary, although higher than usual values were found about 85 cm below the F/F boundary. Sedimentological and biological evidence in the Long Rapids Formation indicates that the F/F extinction was coincident with major sea-level fluctuations in the late Frasnian, including a transgression beginning at the end of the linguiformis Zone and continuing through the Early triangularis Zone and beyond. Marine oscillations were accompanied by anoxia, which appears to be the killing mechanism for the conodont and other end Frasnian extinctions.La limite Frasnien–Famennien (F/F, Dévonien tardif moyen) a été localisée dans la Formation de Long Rapids, au nord de l'Ontario, en utilisant une combinaison de géochimie et de biostratigraphie basée sur les conodontes. The Paleoproterozoic southeastern Churchill Province (SECP) is located in the northeastern Canadian Shield of Labrador and Quebec. The SECP formed through the oblique collisions of the Archean Nain and Superior cratons with a third intervening Archean block, the core zone. The belt has a tripartite structure, comprising the Torngat Orogen (TO) formed by Nain craton – core zone collision in the east, the core zone in the centre, and the New Quebec Orogen (NQO) formed by Superior craton – core zone collision in the west. The SECP thus records transpressional development on the flanks of the Superior and Nain cratons as they indented northwards to form the larger Trans-Hudson – Nagssugtoqidian orogenic belt to the north. Principal stages of tectonic development were (1) 2.2–2.1 Ga crustal rifting of Nain and Superior cratons; (2) ca. 1.9 Ga subduction under eastern Nain craton; (3) ca. 1.87–1.85 Ga collision of Nain craton and core zone to form the TO; (4) 1.845–1.820 Ga sinistral transpression in the TO, and subduction under the western core zone; and (5) 1.82–1.77 Ga collision of Superior craton and core zone to form the NQO, in association with dextral transpression. Crustal-scale cross sections of the SECP have been developed from reflection and refraction seismic data. The western part of the NQO is dominantly west-vergent and associated with an imbricate thick-skinned thrust stack that ramps from the base of the crust. The core zone is characterized by a 35–40 km thick crust and pervasive east-dipping fabrics related to westerly thrusting. The TO is a narrow, doubly vergent belt, associated with a 48 km thick crust that forms a crustal root with a Moho relief of 12 km. The root is interpreted to result from attempted subduction of the core zone under the Nain craton, possibly as a result of mid-crustal wedging by the Nain craton. The TO was the site of intense convergence that resulted in excision of juvenile crust, possibly including tectonic removal of the axial magmatic arc. As a result, the middle to lower levels of the SECP consist largely of refractory Archean lithosphere. This may account for the lack of widespread post-collisional plutonism in the SECP and the preservation of the TO root.Le sud-est de la Province de Churchill (SECP, Southeastern Churchill Province; Paléoprotérozoïque) est situé dans le nord-est du Bouclier canadien, au Labrador et au Québec. The character of the Paleozoic basement of Quesnel Terrane and the position of the terrane accretion surface that separates Quesnel and Kootenay terranes from rocks of the ancient North American margin are subjects of debate. To address these problems, detailed mapping and U–Pb geochronologic studies were carried out in the Christina Lake area to define the relationship of the Mollie Creek assemblage, Josh Creek diorite, and Fife diorite to similar lithologies in the Greenwood – Grand Forks and Rossland regions, and to place limits on the ages of regional deformation and local position of the terrane accretion surface. Deformed metasedimentary rocks of the Mollie Creek assemblage may correlate with sedimentary rocks of the Pennsylvanian to Early Triassic Mount Roberts Formation in the Rossland area. The Mollie Creek assemblage is intruded by the foliated Late Triassic Josh Creek diorite. The Josh Creek diorite and Mollie Creek assemblage have been deformed together as a result of phase two deformation, following the intrusion of the Josh Creek diorite in the Late Triassic and prior to the intrusion of the Fife diorite and deposition of the overlying Rossland Group in the Early Jurassic. Based on relative age, structural position, and lithological similarities to other units within Quesnel Terrane, the Mollie Creek assemblage, Josh Creek diorite, and Fife diorite are a part of Quesnel Terrane and lie above the terrane accretion surface in the Christina Lake area. Therefore, Quesnel Terrane does not unconformably overlie basement rocks of known North American affinity in this region.Le caractère du socle paléozoïque du terrane de Quesnel et la position de la surface d'accrétion du terrane qui sépare les terranes de Quesnel et de Kootenay des roches de l'ancienne marge nord-américaine sont sujets à discussion. New U–Pb ages and K–Ar dates, primarily for rocks proximal to mineral occurrences in the Fawnie Range of central British Columbia, document latest Cretaceous (ca. 74–66 Ma) continental-arc igneous activity and date associated base and precious metal mineralization. U–Pb ages of ca. 73–69 Ma for the Capoose pluton and hypabyssal to extrusive garnet rhyolites at the Capoose prospect demonstrate a latest Cretaceous age for mineralization and a likely plutonic source for mineralizing fluids. A U–Pb age of ca. 67 Ma for a late mineralized felsic dyke and two K–Ar dates (ca. 70 and 68 Ma) for hornfelsed Jurassic volcanic rocks at the Blackwater–Davidson prospect constrain a latest Cretaceous age for mineralization. A U–Pb age of ca. 74 Ma for a fine grained diorite sill that cuts a significant epithermal gold vein at the Tsacha prospect places a minimum age on mineralization at this probable Jura-Cretaceous deposit and documents latest Cretaceous magmatism. Latest Cretaceous K–Ar dates are reported for an andesite flow adjacent to the Eocene Holy Cross deposit (ca. 66 Ma), about 35 km north of the Fawnie Range, and a Kasalka Group rhyolite (ca. 68 Ma) exposed near the western margin of the Nechako Plateau. Latest Cretaceous magmatism and mineralization in the Fawnie Range represent the waning stages of Bulkley suite magmatism and porphyry-style mineralization, which was concentrated along the western margin of the Nechako Plateau at circa 88–70 Ma. The distribution of latest Cretaceous arc igneous rocks along the North American Cordilleran is reviewed and tectonic implications discussed.De nouveaux âges U–Pb et de nouvelles datations K–Ar, surtout pour des roches à proximité d'occurrences minérales dans la chaîne Fawnie du centre de la Colombie-Britannique documentent la plus récente activité ignée d'arc continental au Crétacé (ca. 74–66 Ma) et datent la minéralisation associée de métaux précieux et de métaux de base. The Quaternary stratigraphy of the Nechako River – Cheslatta Lake area of central British Columbia is described and interpreted to reconstruct the late Quaternary history of the region. Exposures of glacial and nonglacial sediments deposited prior to the last glaciation (Fraser) are limited to three sites. Pollen assemblages from pre-Fraser nonglacial sediments at two of these sites reveal forested conditions around 39 000 BP. During the advance phase of the Fraser Glaciation, glacial lakes were ponded when trunk glaciers blocked some tributary valleys. Early in the glaciation, the drainage was free in easterly draining valleys. Subsequently, the easterly drainage was blocked either locally by sediments and ice or as a result of impoundment of the Fraser River and its tributaries east of the study area. Ice generally moved east and northeast from accumulation zones in the Coast Mountains. Ice flow was influenced by topography. Major late-glacial lakes developed in the Nechako River valley and the Knewstubb Lake region because potential drainage routes were blocked by ice.La stratigraphie du Quaternaire de la région de la rivière Nechako et du lac Cheslatta sise au centre de la Colombie Britannique est décrite et interprétée dans le but de reconstruire l'histoire du Quaternaire tardif de cette région. Seul trois coupes stratigraphiques mettent en évidence des sédiments glaciaires et non-glaciaires mis en place avant la dernière glaciation (Fraser). À deux sites, l'assemblage pollinique des sédiments non-glaciaires prédatant la Glaciation de Fraser reflète un environnement forestier aux environs de 39 000 BP. Lors de l'avancée des glaciers au début de la Glaciation de Fraser, des lacs glaciaires furent retenus dans les vallées secondaires par les glaciers qui occupaient les vallées primaires. Au début de cette glaciation, le drainage vers l'est fut tout d'abord ouvert mais subséquemment, il fut bloqué soit localement par des sédiments et de la glace ou en raison du blocage du fleuve Fraser et ses tributaires à l'est de la région d'étude. The late Campanian (~73 Ma) Dorothy bentonite outcrops in the marine Bearpaw Shale for 20 km along the Red Deer River valley east of Drumheller, Alberta, and is up to 13.5 m thick. An isopach map based upon 230 sub surface and surface thickness measurements illustrates an elongated southwest–northeast lobe with maximum dimensions of about 300 km by 50 km. The volume is ~57 km[sup 3] distributed within an area of ~11 000 km[sup 2] . This bentonite is the altered product of what is believed to be a short-lived Plincan-type eruption from part of the Howell Creek Instrusives in southeastern British Columbia. Fortuitous preservation of the original ash in an up to 2.5 m thick calcite-cemented tuffaceous zone near the middle of the bentonite shows the original ash to have been >99% glass shards and pumice. The remainder of the ash is a crystal component consisting mostly of plagioclase and biotite. The silica content of the isotropic glass shards of about 77%, and a refractive index of 1.503 ± 0.001, suggest a magma of rhyolitic composition.La bentonite Dorothy, Campanien tardif (~73 Ma), affleure dans le shale marin Bearpaw sur une distance de 20 km le long de la vallée de la rivière Red Deer, à l'est de Drumheller, en Alberta; elle atteint des épaisseurs de 13,5 m. Two newly discovered kimberlites from the Wawa area, Ontario, are Group-1 kimberlites in their petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic features. They contain mantle minerals and xenoliths of the Fe–Ti-association (magnesian ilmenite, iron-rich olivine, orange Ti-pyrope garnet, augite, and ferroan enstatite) and of the Cr-association (chromian spinel, forsteritic olivine, purple Cr-pyrope garnets, chromian diopside, and enstatite); minerals of Fe–Ti-association are much more abundant. Minerals of eclogitic association are absent. Both G-10 pyrope garnets and high Cr spinels typically associated with diamond are represented in the Cr-association. The average age of the kimberlites is 1097 ± 7 Ma; i.e., contemporaneous with other alkaline igneous rocks in the Wawa area. Equilibration pressures and temperatures of mantle xenoliths plot close to a 40–45 mW m[sup –2] geotherm. On the basis of the Ni-in-garnet geothermometer, garnets from the Wawa kimberlites equilibrated at 800–1350°C, and at least in part within the diamond stability field. It is likely that kimberlitic magma was derived from light rare earth-element-enriched asthenospheric mantle.Deux kimberlites découvertes récemment dans la région de Wawa, en Ontario, sont des kimberlites de Groupe 1 selon leurs caractéristiques pétrographiques, minéralogiques, géochimiques et isotopiques. Anyox Pendant contains complexly deformed greenschist-facies volcanic strata overlain by a thick succession of turbidite sedimentary rocks. At the contact between the two are well-studied copper-rich volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits; however the age and correlation of the volcanic strata, including the ore horizon, are poorly known. New stratigraphic, structural, and geochronology studies elucidate the regional stratigraphic, tectonic, and metallogenic settings and significance of these strata. The thick turbidite succession is correlated with Bowser Lake Group and conformably overlies the volcanic succession. Volcanogenic units include pillowed basalt, volcaniclastic rocks, chlorite phyllite, tuffaceous siltstone, and abundant gabbroic sills and dykes. Strained leucocratic intrusions yielded U–Pb zircon crystallization ages of 176.9 ± 0.2 Ma and 185.6 ± 0.3 Ma. Volcaniclastic rocks yielded detrital zircons that constrain the maximum ages of the volcanic succession. The youngest zircon grains from four samples in different structural segments limit strata to younger than ca. 186 Ma, ca. 178 Ma, ca. 183 Ma, and ca. 186 Ma. The results, combined with the regional oldest age limit of Bowser Lake Group, constrain the volcanic succession to late Early Jurassic(?) and early Middle Jurassic age, and support correlation with Hazelton Group of Stikinia. Furthermore, they enable comparisons with the coeval Au-Ag-rich stratiform Eskay Creek deposit, expanding southward the zone of extension in western Stikinia, which tapped primitive mafic magmas and accompanied the last vestiges of Stikinian volcanism in the early Middle Jurassic.Le pendant Anyox contient des strates volcaniques au faciès des schistes verts, déformées de façon complexe et recouvertes d'une épaisse succession de roches turbidites sédimentaires. New high-resolution magnetic data have been acquired along the coast of western Cape Breton Island near Cheticamp, Nova Scotia, in a transition zone between exposed, elevated basement of the Cape Breton highlands and the adjacent Carboniferous sediment-filled Magdalen Basin. These data were collected to provide continuity between the mapped onshore geology and the geophysical-based interpretations of offshore structure. Separation of the geologic component of the data from the effects of diurnal and other variations in the Earth's magnetic field was made difficult by recording problems at the nearby base recording station. Careful correlation of the fragmented station signal with records from a nearby permanent magnetic observatory enabled a reasonable diurnal signal to be synthesized and applied successfully to the data. Additional processing and filtering helped to enhance small anomalies in the data. Several low-amplitude, fairly linear magnetic anomalies are visible in the reduced anomaly data, generally trending north to northwest away from the coastline. Small-amplitude lineations in the offshore at Cheticamp are associated with folded, tilted, or faulted strata imaged on coincident seismic reflection data and are interpreted as representing juxtaposed units of Carboniferous strata. Other small anomalies appear to represent shallow contacts between intrusive or metasedimentary rocks visible in outcrops near the coast. A stronger, coast-parallel anomaly that extends across the study area from a regional magnetic high in the north is coincident with an offset in basement rocks or deeper strata beneath Carboniferous basin fill. This anomaly may mark part of the faulted transition zone between the elevated highlands of northwestern Cape Breton Island and the Magdalen Basin depocentre.De nouvelles données magnétiques à haute résolution ont été recueillies le long de la côte ouest de l'île du Cap Breton près de Cheticamp, en Nouvelle-Écosse, dans une zone de transition entre le socle élevé, affleurant, des terres hautes du Cap Breton, et le bassin (Carbonifère) avoisinant, des îles de la Madeleine, rempli de sédiments. The Nagssugtoqidian Orogen of West Greenland represents a belt of Palaeoproterozoic deformation and metamorphism between the North Atlantic Craton of South Greenland and a northern, lesser known continental segment that includes the Rinkian Orogen. First-order observations are interpreted to support a cycle of separation, convergence, and eventual collision of two continental masses. The emplacement of the Kangâmiut dyke swarm marked the onset of continental breakup at ca. 2040 Ma, and sedimentary basins formed between ca. 1950 and 1920 Ma. Subsequent convergence and consumption of an oceanic plate caused arc magmatism at 1920–1870 Ma. Granulite-facies peak metamorphism at 1860–1840 Ma in the centre of the orogen is related to crustal thickening by WNW-directed thrusting. Large-scale, upright folding with an east–west trend was ongoing by 1825 Ma. Sinistral strike-slip movement was concentrated along steeply dipping limbs of these large-scale folds and formed orogen-scale steep belts at ca. 1775 Ma. Close similarities between the northern and southern foreland suggest that the two cratons likely originated from one continuous continental block. Temporal and kinematic correlation of these events with adjoining orogens in Canada and Greenland shows close genetic links. The Nagssugtoqidian Orogen of West Greenland continues eastwards beneath the Greenland Ice cap to the Eastern Nagssugtoqidian belt of East Greenland (a.k.a. the Ammassalik belt). The Torngat Orogen of eastern Canada developed simultaneous with the Nagssugtoqidian Orogen with a kinematic compatibility suggesting that the two orogens formed on the west and north flanks, respectively, of a curved leading continental margin of an indenting North Atlantic Craton.L'orogène nagssugtoqidien de l'Ouest du Groenland représente une ceinture de déformation et de métamorphisme paléoprotérozoïque entre le craton nord-atlantique du Sud du Groenland et un autre segment continental nordique moins bien connu qui comprend l'orogène rinkien. Northwestern Laurentia, after cratonization at about 1.85 Ga, underwent a series of tectonic and magmatic events during the Proterozoic that were followed by separation of Laurentia from another landmass, probably Australia. The oldest magmatic event produced the Bonnet Plume River Intrusions (BPRI), which intruded the Wernecke Supergroup as short dikes and small stocks. The BPRI are hydrothermally altered tholeiitic diorites, gabbros, and subordinate anorthositic and syenitic rocks, with trace element signatures consistent with a rift origin. Depleted mantle model ages range from 2.29 to 2.57 Ga and ℇ[sub Nd] values range from +0.7 to –1.7. An increasing crustal component is apparent in rocks with more evolved compositions. Four U–Pb zircon ages (1705.9 ± 0.7, 1709.4 ± 1.4, 1711.1 ± 5.1, and 1713.6 ± 12.7 Ma) indicate a Paleoproterozoic age for the BPRI. These dates constrain the age of the Wernecke Supergroup to ca. 1710 Ma, making it the oldest supracrustal succession in western Laurentia, e.g., >240 Ma older than the Belt Supergroup of southeastern British Columbia and the northwestern United States. The Wernecke Supergroup was deposited in the first rift basin to open along the western margin of Laurentia, but was later inverted by the pre-1.6 Ga Racklan Orogeny, an event possibly influenced by transmission of compression from the Yavapai and Mazatzal orogenies in southern Laurentia. The Neoproterozoic southwestern United States – east Antarctica (SWEAT) reconstruction, which places Australia next to northwestern Laurentia, is supported by linkages between Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic geological features in northwestern Canada and Australia.Après une cratonisation vers 1,85 Ga, le nord-ouest du continent laurentien (Laurentia) a subi une série d'événements tectoniques et magmatiques au cours du Protérozoïque; ces événements ont été suivis par la séparation de Laurentia d'une autre masse continentale, probablement l'Australie. A 500 m-thick lens of carbonatitic ultrabasic lapilli tuffs and lavas interbedded with platformal Povungnituk sediments in the foreland of the Cape Smith Belt is its earliest known magmatism and may relate to its initial rifting. The sequence comprises tuffs capped in part by effusives. Accretionary and cored lapilli in the tuffs and pillows in the lavas suggest emplacement in a shallow marine environment. Its current assemblage of antigorite, chlorite, talc, and (in part primary?) carbonate, magnetite, ilmenite, minor chromite, and phlogopite results from probable concurrent hydrothermal alteration and subsequent greenschist regional metamorphism. Surviving accessory minerals: apatite, monazite, zircon, rutile, and aeschenite(?) are widespread but scarce. Carbonate (mostly dolomite) is a major and integral component of the rock and interpreted as an original, albeit recrystallized, magmatic constituent. Magnetite is conspicuous in the tuffs: as lapilli and lapilli cores, locally as giant crystals, and as stringers. Except in subhedral groundmass crystals, its negligible TiO[sub 2] is evidence of its hydrothermal reconstitution. Compositions of chromite cores and rare relicts of phlogopite crystals are consistent with mantle derivation. Rock compositions are low in SiO[sub 2] (<35%) and Al[sub 2] O[sub 3] (<3%), high in MgO (>25 wt.%) and alkaline. The immobile incompatible elements (e.g., Zr, average 260 ppm; Nb, average 130 ppm) and the light rare-earth elements are enriched. The rocks are compositionally similar to type Siberian meimechites and closely resemble the "meimechite"–carbonatite eruptives of Castignon Lake, Labrador Trough. Based on experimental evidence, Lac Leclair magmas are interpreted as originating by minor partial melting of carbonated mantle at ~100 km depths and reaching the surface via conduits opened by deep rifting that initiated the Cape Smith segment of the Trans-Hudson Orogen.Une lentille de 500 m d'épaisseur de tufs volcaniques à lapilli, carbonatitiques et ultrabasiques, interstratifiés avec des sédiments de plate-forme de Povungnituk dans l'avant-pays de la ceinture de Cape Smith en représente le magnétisme connu le plus précoce et pourrait être reliée à sa dérive initiale. In southern Nova Scotia, the Devonian South Mountain Batholith was emplaced into metasedimentary rocks of the Cambro-Ordovician Meguma Group at ca. 370 Ma. The contact of the eastern end of the South Mountain Batholith transects at a high angle the trace of subhorizontal, upright Acadian (mid-late Devonian) folds formed in the Meguma Group. At two locations, where the contact is well exposed, there are contrasting structures in the country rocks adjacent to Acadian anticlinoria and synclinoria, respectively. Regional folds are affected by ductile deformation where anticlinoria abut the batholith but are undisturbed at the synclinoria. At the anticlinorial contacts, the metasedimentary bedding youngs towards the granite, and granite side-down shear resulted in a belt in which bedding is transposed to a new contact-parallel fabric. Deflection of linear structures that were initially horizontal in the Acadian folds (e.g., intersection lineations) illustrates the granite side-down shear. The reorientation of initially horizontal linear structures gradually diminishes as the contact is followed from the anticlinoria to the synclinoria, where the regional fold geometry is preserved right up to the contact, showing that there is no granite side-down shear in the synclinoria at the present level of erosion. Two models that potentially explain this variation in contact structure are discussed. In the first, it is explained as an artifact of emplacement of the batholith late in the growth of the Acadian folds, in which the horizontal, upright anticlinoria amplified and moved upward relative to the pluton. A shear zone was formed parallel to the contact along the thermally softened tip of the anticlinoria. The synclinoria remained fixed vertically and there was no differential movement between granite and country rock. Thus, regional structures and evidence for stoping are most widely preserved in the synclinoria, where they were not overprinted by the marginal shearing. The second model invokes floor-down emplacement of magma into folds of layered sediments with contrasting mechanical properties. The erosion surface within the synclinoria intersects slates of the Halifax Formation with mechanical properties that favour emplacement predominantly by dyking and stoping. Below the level of erosion, the stratigraphically underlying Goldenville Formation, having different mechanical properties than the Halifax, presumably is displaced downwards predominantly by ductile deformation (pure and simple shear). Within the anticlinoria, where the Goldenville Formation is exposed, the requirement of a level pluton floor necessitates that downward deflection is accompanied by relatively high ductile strains in the wall rock. The lithospheric structure of the transition from the craton to the Cordillera in northeastern British Columbia is interpreted from inversion of seismic refraction – wide-angle reflection data along a 460-km profile, and from 3-d (3-dimensional) inversion and 2.5-d forward modelling of Bouguer gravity data. The seismic profile extends westward from the sediment-covered edge of cratonic North America across the Foreland and Omineca morphogeological belts to the eastern boundary of accreted terranes, beyond the Tintina Fault. Across the ancient cratonic margin, the resultant models reveal a westward-thickening package of low upper crustal velocities (6.2 km/s and less) and low densities to almost 20 km depth below the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, overlying a west-facing ramp of higher velocities and densities in the middle and lower crust. These features are inferred to represent passive-margin sediments deposited on the ancient rifted margin during the mid-to-late Proterozoic and early Paleozoic. A wedge-shaped high-velocity (7.3 km/s) crustal layer at the base of the crust beneath the edge of cratonic North America is interpreted to be the result of magmatic underplating during rifting. In the Cordilleran Foreland Belt, high velocities (6.4 km/s) in the upper 5 km of the crust indicate rocks upthrust from the middle crust. A narrow trench of low velocities in the near-surface, which is imaged ~20 km to the west of the inferred location of the Tintina Fault, is interpreted to represent the actual location of the fault or a major splay. From east to west, the Moho decreases in depth from ~40 km to ~34 km below the rifted margin of ancestral North America, then defines a small root at ~38 km depth below the high topography and upper crustal velocities of the eastern Foreland Belt, and gradually shallows to ~34 km beneath the Omineca belt. An enigmatic laterally heterogeneous upper mantle has anomalously high velocities (up to 8.3 km/s) beneath the Foreland Belt, flanked by regions of low velocities (7.7–7.8 km/s). The geology and geochemistry of the Canton Saint-Onge wollastonite deposit indicate that it is a skarn formed by silica metasomatism of dolomite-rich rocks. Oxygen isotopic compositions of the skarn rocks and the nearby plutons show that the fluids responsible for the metasomatism were not meteoric, but were probably associated with the Du Bras granitic pluton. However, the granite is not in contact with the wollastonite rocks at the present level of exposure, hence the fluids must have been released at greater depths. Wollastonite-rich parts of the skarn rocks are isotopically lighter than diopside-rich rocks, suggesting that wollastonite formed in regions of higher fluid flux.La géologie et la géochimie du dépôt de wollastonite du canton Saint-Onge indiquent qu'il s'agit d'un skarn formé par le métasomatisme de la silice de roches riches en dolomie. Almost sixty years after the initial mapping of extensive Quaternary sediments along the coast of St. George's Bay, Newfoundland, a revised stratigraphic section is presented which identifies five main sediment types (diamicton, mud, sand, gravelly sand, gravel) and their stratigraphical position along 39 km of coastline from Highlands to Flat Bay. Most of the sediments overlying a basal till (St. George's River Drift) are interpreted to have been deposited in an ice-proximal to ice-distal glaciomarine environment by debris flow, underflow, current flow, or suspension settling, and capped by glaciofluvial outwash (Bay St. George Delta). For the most part, sections display a relatively simple deglacial sequence in a shallowing marine to fluvial environment. Where hummocky ridges intersect the coast, however, the sedimentary sequences are more complex and the variability in depositional style is typical of grounding line fans at a tidewater glacier margin. The occurrence of an upper diamicton or coarse gravels (Robinsons Head Drift) was generally observed only in grounding-line fan sequences and is interpreted here in the context of marginal fluctuations of a quasi-stable tidewater glacier, and not necessarily a climatically-induced readvance of a land-based ice margin (Robinsons Head readvance). Radiocarbon dates on marine shells from varied stratigraphic positions and sedimentary units suggest rapid deposition occurred in a glaciomarine environment between 14 and 13 ka BP.Près de soixante ans après la cartographie initiale de sédiments quaternaires largement répandus le long de la côte de la baie St. George, à Terre-Neuve, nous présentons une section stratigraphique révisée qui identifie cinq types principaux de sédiments (diamicton, boue, sable, sable graveleux, gravier) et leurs positions stratigraphiques le long de 39 km de côte, de Highlands à Flat Bay. New magnetic and paleomagnetic data for central British Columbia support and quantify the hypothesis that the area underwent significant Tertiary-age transtensional deformation. Paleomagnetically determined tilts in Eocene rocks indicate that four fault-bounded pits, which constitute the Endako molybdenum mine, were displaced on a series of normal (probably listric) faults that have separations of less than a kilometre. The interpretation also suggests there can be little vertical offset on the Denak West Fault, which separates the Denak East and Denak West pits. Regional paleomagnetic data indicate a predominance of easterly directed tilts to the east of the Casey Fault, but to the west a large variation in the orientation and magnitude of tilts is observed. Results at one site proximal to the Casey Fault indicate a component of dip-slip displacement on this dominantly dextral strike-slip fault. Mapped northeast- and northwest-trending faults commonly correspond to linear zones of steep magnetic gradient and near-surface magnetic sources. Several additional northwest- and northeast-trending lineaments are imaged in the magnetic data where no faults are mapped (particularly over massive and lithologically homogeneous phases of the Endako batholith). Euler deconvolution solutions confirm most such lineaments are also associated with shallow magnetic sources. In profile, they have either a fault or dyke character and are interpreted to be unmapped faults, some locally intruded by mafic dykes, which cut the region into a series of fault-bounded blocks.De nouvelles données magnétiques et paléomagnétiques pour le centre de la Colombie-Britannique supportent et quantifient l'hypothèse que la région a subi d'importantes déformations de tension transversale au Tertiaire. Twenty-three new, precise, Eocene U–Pb and [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar age determinations for calc-alkaline volcanic rocks of the Ootsa Lake Group and associated intrusive rocks, widespread in the Nechako Plateau in central British Columbia, constrain the timing of the Eocene magmatism to 53.2–47.6 Ma, with a local duration of as little as 2–3 million years. The new dates show that magmatism in the study area is partly coeval with that responsible for the Babine Igneous Suite – Newman Volcanic Suite (53–50 Ma) to the north, and for the Endako Group (51–45 Ma), which overlies the Ootsa Lake Group; however, locally the three magmatic suites are distinct in age and (or) the strata record a magmatic hiatus of as much as 7.5 million years. The ages generally young from north to south (52–47 Ma) along the western portion of the study area. The Babine Igneous Suite – Newman Volcanic Suite represents the oldest member of this series. However, in the east, the Ootsa Lake Group volcanic rocks are generally older (53–51 Ma). The anomalously older ages may be related to the interaction of magmatism and formation of a nearby and coeval core complex, which ongoing studies show was uplifted at about the same time during the Eocene. Felsic plutonism associated with the Ootsa Lake Group occurred between 50.5 and 47.3 Ma. These plutons were emplaced in an extensional setting along north-northeast-trending faults. Paleoproterozoic granitoid rocks in the Island Harbour Bay area (Kaipokok domain, Makkovik Province, Labrador) are divided into four separate suites on the basis of field relations, petrology, and age. The redefined Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite consists of ca. 1895–1870 Ma dioritic to granitic (mainly granodioritic and granitic) units. The rocks are variably foliated as a result of emplacement under amphibolite-facies conditions in a dextral transpressive regime during Andean-type subduction. The dominant mafic mineral is biotite, and accessory epidote, allanite, and titanite are abundant. The suite is calc-alkalic, but with rare-earth element patterns similar to those of Archean tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic suites. It is interpreted to have formed deep in an Andean-type magmatic arc at the margin of the Nain continent. In contrast, the younger Hares Islands and Drunken Harbour granites (emplaced at ca. 1805 and 1790 Ma, respectively) were part of widespread late-orogenic magmatic activity in the Makkovik Province. In contrast to the Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite, these units retain igneous textures and are either unfoliated or display magmatic foliation, locally modified by emplacement in active shear zones. The ca. 1716 Ma Blacklers Bight granite varies from porphyritic to equigranular, is fluorite-bearing, and has chemical features approaching those of continental A-type granites. Similar granite occurs farther south in the Makkovik Province, reflecting widespread anorogenic magmatic activity at that time, perhaps related to mafic magma underplating. Variable interaction with Archean (Nain Province) crust by granitic magmas of all three ages is evidenced by ℇ[sub Nd ] values ranging from –7.2 to –2.5.Les roches granitoïdes paléoprotérozoïques de la région de Island Harbour Bay (domaine de Kaipokok, province de Makkovik, au Labrador) sont divisées en quatre suites distinctes selon les relations de terrain, la pétrologie et l'âge. New U–Pb zircon, titanite, and monazite ages reported here, along with existing age data, demonstrate that granitoid bodies in the northwestern segment of the Paleoproterozoic Makkovik Province, Labrador, are of three distinct ages. The redefined Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite consists of varied dioritic to granitic units that were syntectonically emplaced into Archean crust of the Kaipokok domain between ca. 1895 Ma and 1870 ± 2 Ma. This plutonism occurred during the early stages of the Makkovikian Orogeny in an obliquely convergent, Andean continental margin setting. The Hares Islands and Drunken Harbour granites form smaller, discrete plutons that were emplaced in or adjacent to the Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite at 1805 ± 5 Ma and 1791 ± 2 Ma, respectively, during dextral strike-slip deformation that accompanied accretion of an outboard juvenile terrane. Magmatic activity during this period was preferentially sited along active structural zones, but also occurred outside of these zones. The undeformed Blacklers Bight A-type granite was emplaced in the Kaipokok domain at 1716 ± 1 Ma, late in the development of the orogen. A-type granites of this age form a significant component of the southeastern Makkovik Province, and their generation is linked to mafic underplating and heterogeneous regional extension. The new age data support the conclusion of earlier workers that crustal growth via synorogenic and postorogenic plutonism was episodic, and allow, along with field and geochemical data, inferences to be made regarding the tectonic setting of individual plutonic events.Les nouveaux âges U–Pb sur du zircon, de la titanite et de la monazite, rapportés ici avec certaines données d'âge déjà existantes, démontrent que des amas granitoïdes dans le segment nord-ouest de la province de Makkovik, du Paléoprotérozoïque, au Labrador, sont de trois âges distincts. La suite plutonique Island Harbour Bay redéfinie comprend des unités dioritiques à granitiques variées qui ont été mises en place syntectoniquement dans la croûte archéenne du domaine Kaipokok il y a environ 1895 à 1870 ± 2 Ma. Ce plutonisme a eu lieu au cours des premiers stages de l'orogénie makkovikienne dans un environnement de marge continentale andin à convergence oblique. Les granites de Hares Islands et de Drunken Harbour forment de plus petits plutons distincts qui ont été mis en place dans la suite plutonique Island Bay Harbour ou adjacents à cette dernière respectivement à 1805 ± 5 Ma et 1791 ± 2 Ma, au cours d'une déformation dextre qui a accompagné l'accrétion d'un terrane juvénile extérieur. L'activité magmatique au cours de cette période était localisée surtout le long de zones structurales actives mais elle a aussi eu lieu en dehors de ces zones. Blacklers Bight, le granite non déformé de type A, a été mis en place dans le domaine de Kaipokok ca. 1716 ± 1 Ma, soit tard dans le développement de l'orogène. Des granites de type A de cet âge sont une composante significative de la province Makkovik du sud-est et leur génération est liée à une remontée de magma mafique sous les plaques et à une extension hétérogène régionale. The Cape Cormorant Formation of the Table Head Group exposed on the Port au Port Peninsula, western Newfoundland, is composed of dark-brown to black shales with interbeds of thin calcareous silty and sandy distal turbidites. Distinctive carbonate conglomerates and breccias derived from the foundering shelf are occasionally found in the formation. The sediments accumulated in the foreland basin formed during the early stage of the Taconic orogeny. The faunas from the upper part of the Cape Cormorant Formation include graptolites, conodonts, and chitinozoans. The graptolites are well preserved, but are of low diversity and are referred to the Darriwil Pterograptus elegans Zone. Conodonts recorded from the distal turbidites are rare and fragmented. The faunas include taxa that are known from the St. George and Table Head groups. The conodont fauna is tentatively assigned to the Histiodella kristinae Phylozone and to the younger, unzoned interval. The chitinozoans are well preserved and the yield is high. The fauna is assigned to the Cyathochitina jenkinsi Zone and to an undefined interval. The abundance and diversity of the chitinozoan assemblages display a cyclic pattern, which is related to changes of the oceanic watermass in the foreland basin. The new chitinozoan species Belonechitina nevillensis n. sp., Belonechitina uniformipunctata n. sp., and Cyathochitina cormorani n. sp. are described.La Formation de Cape Cormorant du Groupe de Table Head affleurant dans la péninsule de Port au Port, dans l'ouest de Terre-Neuve, est composée de schistes argileux brun foncé à noirs avec de minces interlits de turbidites distales, calcareuses, silteuses et sablonneuses. Les Graptolites sont bien conservés, mais faiblement diversifiés, et ils sont rattachés à la zone Pterograptus elegans de Darriwil. Les Conodontes provenant de turbidites distales sont rares et fragmentés. La faune comprend des taxons qui sont connus des groupes de St. George et de Table Head. La faune des Conodontes est provisoirement assignée à la phylozone Histiodella kristinae et à l'intervalle plus jeune qui n'est pas zoné. Les Chitinozoaires sont bien préservés et abondants. La faune est assignée à la zone Cyathochitina jenkinsi et à un intervalle indéfini. L'abondance et la diversité des assemblages de Chitinozoaires démontrent un patron cyclique qui est relié aux changements de la masse d'eau océanique dans le bassin d'avant-pays.
