The Kashechewan First Nation (KFN) community is located on a floodplain of the north branch of the Albany River, on the west coast of James Bay. Each spring, the community faces the uncertain prospect of evacuation due to ice-jam flooding, the most severe of which occurred in 2006. A study was conducted to develop long-term options for reducing the flood risk to the community, which included dams, dykes, pier and weir type ice-control structures, and conveyance channels. This paper presents a numerical model study on the Albany River in Ontario, Canada to develop ice control as a potential means for mitigating ice-jam flooding at the KFN community using the two-dimensional ice dynamics model DynaRICE. A method was developed to simulate pier type ice-control structures within the model such that the physical channel conditions, flow conditions, and combinations of ice control could be evaluated. The model allowed detailed simulation of ice retention, resulting inundation, and the forces on the individual piers. To optimize the design of the piers, including pier spacing, height, and size, various combinations of ice, flow, and pier conditions were simulated. It is commonly assumed that the gradients of pre-vegetation fluvial systems were greater than those of modern rivers. If the measured thickness of crossbeds is first corrected for post-depositional compaction, using thin-section-based observations, the corrected thickness data can be applied to a new suite of formulae, based on observations of >4000 modern rivers, to provide more realistic paleohydrological reconstructions of ancient river systems. Using this approach, after correction for 36% compaction, the average slope of the rivers that deposited the Mississagi Formation was calculated as 0.0013 m/m (0.0005–0.0026), with an average bankfull channel depth of 2.67 m. The slope of Serpent Formation rivers, after correction for 33.5% compaction, averaged 0.0007 m/m (0.0003–0.0016), with an average bankfull channel depth of 5.85 m. The calculation of slopes using this approach on these Paleoproterozoic and other Precambrian systems indicates that primary river gradients were similar to modern rivers, falling well below the "depositional gap", of 0.007–0.026 m/m, between modern rivers and arid-region fans, negating the long-held idea that pre-vegetation rivers had higher slopes than their modern counterparts. The Nakdong River plain is one of the few areas in Korea where soft clays have been deposited. Although many site investigations related to large-scale reclamation works have been carried out over the past 10 years, soil profiles still need to be better characterized. The Pusan clays at this location constitute an interesting topic for researchers both in and outside Korea due to their geological complexity, unusually great thickness, very low overconsolidation (OCR) values, large consolidation settlement, and the effects of artesian pressure. This paper represents the first comprehensive review of Pusan clays and collates extensive existing and new geotechnical data. In southwest Yukon, the boundary between the Alexander terrane and Wrangellia corresponds with the Duke River fault. In this paper, we report on observations of the Duke River fault from four localities in southwest Yukon, and provide new constraints on (1) Permian regional metamorphism within the Alexander terrane, (2) Cretaceous ductile deformation along the Duke River fault, and (3) post-Miocene brittle deformation along the fault. Within these areas, the Duke River fault juxtaposes imbricated, pervasively foliated and folded greenschist-facies rocks of the Alexander terrane southwest of the fault against sub-greenschist-facies, less deformed rocks of Wrangellia. Multiple lines of evidence from this region indicate the Alexander terrane has been juxtaposed against Wrangellia along a southwest-dipping thrust fault. 40Ar/39Ar dates from muscovite, which grew during faulting or have been reset by motion along the Duke River fault, range from 79 to 105 Ma, suggesting that ductile movement along the fault is at least as old as Cretaceous (Albian to Cenomanian). This phase of faulting is interpreted as the local expression of Cretaceous shortening, which has been documented along the length and width of the Cordillera. Cretaceous structures along the Duke River fault are overprinted by brittle deformation that affects rocks as young as Miocene (or Pliocene?). Dissected colluvial sediments on a Peace River terrace at Bear Flat, northeast British Columbia enclosed a late Pleistocene micromammalian faunule. The fossil remains, including a few loosely articulated skulls and mandibles, were dominated by taiga voles (Microtus xanthognathus). The Bear Flat site constitutes the second fossil occurrence in the region of this elusive species, which is unknown in British Columbia in historic times. The late Pleistocene age, determined by accelerator mass spectrometry directly on taiga vole bone collagen, is consistent with the ages of widespread taiga vole records peripheral to the Laurentide ice sheet in western, mid-western, and eastern North America. The presence of allo-chronous remains within a comprehensively dated sedimentary sequence provides a cautionary note about straightforward acceptance of relative stratigraphic dating. The presence of Watinoceras reesidei Warren, Watinoceras coloradoense (Henderson), Watinoceras thompsonense Cobban, and Mytiloides mytiloides (Mantell) within the Tuskoola sandstone beds of the Vimy Member of the Kaskapau (Blackstone) Formation, places these strata within the lower Turonian stage of the Upper Cretaceous, within the Watinoceras reesidei Zone. The Quaternary stratigraphy of the Nechako River – Cheslatta Lake area of central British Columbia is described and interpreted to reconstruct the late Quaternary history of the region. Exposures of glacial and nonglacial sediments deposited prior to the last glaciation (Fraser) are limited to three sites. Pollen assemblages from pre-Fraser nonglacial sediments at two of these sites reveal forested conditions around 39 000 BP. During the advance phase of the Fraser Glaciation, glacial lakes were ponded when trunk glaciers blocked some tributary valleys. Early in the glaciation, the drainage was free in easterly draining valleys. Subsequently, the easterly drainage was blocked either locally by sediments and ice or as a result of impoundment of the Fraser River and its tributaries east of the study area. Ice generally moved east and northeast from accumulation zones in the Coast Mountains. Ice flow was influenced by topography.
