Cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) are a family of discrete latent attribute models that serve as statistical basis in educational and psychological cognitive diagnosis assessments. CDMs aim to achieve fine-grained inference on individuals' latent attributes, based on their observed responses to a set of designed diagnostic items. In the literature, CDMs usually assume that items require mastery of specific latent attributes and that each attribute is either fully mastered or not mastered by a given subject. We propose a new class of models, partial mastery CDMs (PM-CDMs), that generalizes CDMs by allowing for partial mastery levels for each attribute of interest. We demonstrate that PM-CDMs can be represented as restricted latent class models. Relying on the latent class representation, we propose a Bayesian approach for estimation. We present simulation studies to demonstrate parameter recovery, to investigate the impact of model misspecification with respect to partial mastery, and to develop diagnostic tools that could be used by practitioners to decide between CDMs and PM-CDMs. We use two examples of real test data -- the fraction subtraction and the English tests -- to demonstrate that employing PM-CDMs not only improves model fit, compared to CDMs, but also can make substantial difference in conclusions about attribute mastery. We conclude that PM-CDMs can lead to more effective remediation programs by providing detailed individual-level information about skills learned and skills that need to study.

In multi-server queueing systems where there is no central queue holding all incoming jobs, job dispatching policies are used to assign incoming jobs to the queue at one of the servers. Classic job dispatching policies such as join-the-shortest-queue and shortest expected delay assume that the service rates and queue lengths of the servers are known to the dispatcher. In this work, we tackle the problem of job dispatching without the knowledge of service rates and queue lengths, where the dispatcher can only obtain noisy estimates of the service rates by observing job departures. This problem presents a novel exploration-exploitation trade-off between sending jobs to all the servers to estimate their service rates, and exploiting the currently known fastest servers to minimize the expected queueing delay. We propose a bandit-based exploration policy that learns the service rates from observed job departures. Unlike the standard multi-armed bandit problem where only one out of a finite set of actions is optimal, here the optimal policy requires identifying the optimal fraction of incoming jobs to be sent to each server. We present a regret analysis and simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed bandit-based exploration policy.

Fundamental to the theory of continued fractions is the fact that every infinite continued fraction with positive integer coefficients converges; however, it is unknown precisely which continued fractions with integer coefficients (not necessarily positive) converge. Here we present a simple test that determines whether an integer continued fraction converges or diverges. In addition, for convergent continued fractions the test specifies whether the limit is rational or irrational. An attractive way to visualise integer continued fractions is to model them as paths on the Farey graph, which is a graph embedded in the hyperbolic plane that induces a tessellation of the hyperbolic plane by ideal triangles. With this geometric representation of continued fractions our test for convergence can be interpreted in a particularly elegant manner, giving deeper insight into the nature of continued fraction convergence., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Inspired by recent work on extended image volumes that lays the ground for randomized probing of extremely large seismic wavefield matrices, we present a memory frugal and computationally efficient inversion methodology that uses techniques from randomized linear algebra. By means of a carefully selected realistic synthetic example, we demonstrate that we are capable of achieving competitive inversion results at a fraction of the memory cost of conventional full-waveform inversion with limited computational overhead. By exchanging memory for negligible computational overhead, we open with the presented technology the door towards the use of low-memory accelerators such as GPUs.

Given input images, scene graph generation (SGG) aims to produce comprehensive, graphical representations describing visual relationships among salient objects. Recently, more efforts have been paid to the long tail problem in SGG; however, the imbalance in the fraction of missing labels of different classes, or reporting bias, exacerbating the long tail is rarely considered and cannot be solved by the existing debiasing methods. In this paper we show that, due to the missing labels, SGG can be viewed as a "Learning from Positive and Unlabeled data" (PU learning) problem, where the reporting bias can be removed by recovering the unbiased probabilities from the biased ones by utilizing label frequencies, i.e., the per-class fraction of labeled, positive examples in all the positive examples. To obtain accurate label frequency estimates, we propose Dynamic Label Frequency Estimation (DLFE) to take advantage of training-time data augmentation and average over multiple training iterations to introduce more valid examples. Extensive experiments show that DLFE is more effective in estimating label frequencies than a naive variant of the traditional estimate, and DLFE significantly alleviates the long tail and achieves state-of-the-art debiasing performance on the VG dataset. Numerically computing global policies to optimal control problems for complex dynamical systems is mostly intractable. In consequence, a number of approximation methods have been developed. However, none of the current methods can quantify by how much the resulting control underperforms the elusive globally optimal solution. Here we propose policy decomposition, an approximation method with explicit suboptimality estimates. Our method decomposes the optimal control problem into lower-dimensional subproblems, whose optimal solutions are recombined to build a control policy for the entire system. Many such combinations exist, and we introduce the value error and its LQR and DDP estimates to predict the suboptimality of possible combinations and prioritize the ones that minimize it. Using a cart-pole, a 3-link balancing biped and N-link planar manipulators as example systems, we find that the estimates correctly identify the best combinations, yielding control policies in a fraction of the time it takes to compute the optimal control without a notable sacrifice in closed-loop performance. While more research will be needed to find ways of dealing with the combinatorics of policy decomposition, the results suggest this method could be an effective alternative for approximating optimal control in intractable systems.

The population of massive black holes (MBHs) in dwarf galaxies is elusive, but fundamentally important to understand the coevolution of black holes with their hosts and the formation of the first collapsed objects in the Universe. While some progress was made in determining the X-ray detected fraction of MBHs in dwarfs, with typical values ranging from $0\%$ to $6\%$, their overall active fraction, ${\cal A}$, is still largely unconstrained. Here, we develop a theoretical model to predict the multiwavelength active fraction of MBHs in dwarf galaxies starting from first principles and based on the physical properties of the host, namely, its stellar mass and angular momentum content. We find multiwavelength active fractions for MBHs, accreting at typically low rates, ranging from $5\%$ to $22\%$, and increasing with the stellar mass of the host as ${\cal A} \sim(\log_{10}M_{\star})^{4.5}$. If dwarfs are characterized by low-metallicity environments, the active fraction may reach $\sim 30\%$ for the most massive hosts. Suppose we have $n$ different types of self-replicating entity, with the population $P_i$ of the $i$th type changing at a rate equal to $P_i$ times the fitness $f_i$ of that type. Suppose the fitness $f_i$ is any continuous function of all the populations $P_1, \dots, P_n$. Let $p_i$ be the fraction of replicators that are of the $i$th type. Then $p = (p_1, \dots, p_n)$ is a time-dependent probability distribution, and we prove that its speed as measured by the Fisher information metric equals the variance in fitness. In rough terms, this says that the speed at which information is updated through natural selection equals the variance in fitness. This result can be seen as a modified version of Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection. The enhanced competition paradigm is an attempt at bridging the gap between simple and optimal auctions. In this line of work, given an auction setting with $m$ items and $n$ bidders, the goal is to find the smallest $n' \geq n$ such that selling the items to $n'$ bidders through a simple auction generates (almost) the same revenue as the optimal auction. Recently, Feldman, Friedler, and Rubinstein [EC, 2018] showed that an arbitrarily large constant fraction of the optimal revenue from selling $m$ items to a single bidder can be obtained via simple auctions with a constant number of bidders. However, their techniques break down even for two bidders, and can only show a bound of $n' = n \cdot O(\log \frac{m}{n})$. Our main result is that $n' = O(n)$ bidders suffice for all values of $m$ and $n$. That is, we show that, for all $m$ and $n$, an arbitrarily large constant fraction of the optimal revenue from selling $m$ items to $n$ bidders can be obtained via simple auctions with $O(n)$ bidders. While radio emission in quasars can be contributed to by a variety of processes (involving star forming regions, accretion disk coronas and winds, and jets), the powering of the radio loudest quasars must involve very strong jets, presumably launched by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism incorporating the magnetically arrested disk (MAD) scenario. We focus on the latter and investigate the dependence of their fraction on redshift. We also examine the dependence of the radio-loud fraction (RLF) on BH mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and Eddington ratio ($��_{\rm Edd}$) while excluding the redshift bias by narrowing its range. In both these investigations we remove the bias associated with: (1) the diversity of source selection by constructing two well-defined, homogeneous samples of quasars (first within $0.7 \leq z < 1.9$, second within $0.5 \leq z < 0.7$); (2) a strong drop in the RLF of quasars at smaller BH masses by choosing those with BH masses larger than $10^{8.5} M_{\odot}$. We confirm some previous results showing the increase in the fraction of radio-loud quasars with cosmic time and that this trend can be even steeper if we account for the bias introduced by the dependence of the RLF on BH mass whereas the bias introduced by the dependence of the RLF on Eddington ratio is shown to be negligible. Assuming that quasar activities are triggered by galaxy mergers we argue that such an increase can result from the slower drop with cosmic time of mixed mergers than of wet mergers., 15 pages, 4 figures. In many real-world contagion phenomena, the number of contacts to spreading entities for adoption varies for different individuals. Therefore, we study a model of contagion dynamics with heterogeneous adoption thresholds. We derive mean-field equations for the fraction of adopted nodes and obtain phase diagrams in terms of the transmission probability and fraction of nodes requiring multiple contacts for adoption. We find a double phase transition exhibiting a continuous transition and a subsequent discontinuous jump in the fraction of adopted nodes because of the heterogeneity in adoption thresholds. Additionally, we observe hysteresis curves in the fraction of adopted nodes owing to adopted nodes in the densely connected core in a network., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Gaussian process regression machine learning with a physically-informed kernel is used to model the phase compositions of nickel-base superalloys. The model delivers good predictions for laboratory and commercial superalloys, with R 2 > 0 . 8 for all but two components of each of the γ and γ ′ phases, and R 2 = 0 . 924 ( RMSE = 0 . 063 ) for the γ ′ fraction. For four benchmark SX-series alloys the methodology predicts the γ ′ phase composition with RMSE = 0 . 006 and the fraction with RMSE = 0 . 020 , superior to the 0.007 and 0.021 respectively from CALPHAD. Furthermore, unlike CALPHAD Gaussian process regression quantifies the uncertainty in predictions, and can be retrained as new data becomes available.

In dynamic load balancing, we wish to distribute balls into bins in an environment where both balls and bins can be added and removed. We want to minimize the maximum load of any bin but we also want to minimize the number of balls and bins affected when adding or removing a ball or a bin. We want a hashing-style solution where we given the ID of a ball can find its bin efficiently. We are given a balancing parameter $c=1+\epsilon$, where $\epsilon\in (0,1)$. With $n$ and $m$ the current numbers of balls and bins, we want no bin with load above $C=\lceil c n/m\rceil$, referred to as the capacity of the bins. We present a scheme where we can locate a ball checking $1+O(\log 1/\epsilon)$ bins in expectation. When inserting or deleting a ball, we expect to move $O(1/\epsilon)$ balls, and when inserting or deleting a bin, we expect to move $O(C/\epsilon)$ balls. Previous bounds were off by a factor $1/\epsilon$. We consider the problem of fair allocation of indivisible goods to n agents, with no transfers. When agents have equal entitlements, the well established notion of the maximin share (MMS) serves as an attractive fairness criterion, where to qualify as fair, an allocation needs to give every agent at least a substantial fraction of her MMS. In this paper we consider the case of arbitrary (unequal) entitlements. We explain shortcomings in previous attempts that extend the MMS to unequal entitlements. Our conceptual contribution is the introduction of a new notion of a share, the AnyPrice share (APS), that is appropriate for settings with arbitrary entitlements. The AnyPrice share of an agent is the value she can guarantee to herself if she is given a budget equal to her entitlement, and she buys her highest value affordable set when items are adversarially priced with a total price equal to the total entitlements. Even for the equal entitlements case, this notion is new, and satisfies APS ≥ MMS, where the inequality is sometimes strict. We also present an alternative definition for the APS as a maximization problem (a fractional version of the MMS), and provide comparisons between the APS and previous notions of fairness. Our main result concerns additive valuations and arbitrary entitlements, for which we provide a polynomial-time algorithm that gives every agent at least a 3/5-fraction of her APS. This algorithm can also be viewed as providing a strategy in a certain natural bidding game, and this strategy secures each agent that uses it at least a 3/5-fraction of her APS, regardless of the strategies used by other agents.

We investigate an averaging process that describes how interacting agents approach consensus through binary interactions. In each elementary step, two agents are selected at random and they reach compromise by adopting their opinion average. We show that the fraction of agents with a monotonically decreasing opinion decays as $e^{-\alpha t}$, and that the exponent $\alpha=\tfrac{1}{2}-\tfrac{1+\ln \ln 2}{4\ln 2}$ is selected as the extremum from a continuous spectrum of possible values. The opinion distribution of monotonic agents is asymmetric, and it becomes self-similar at large times. Furthermore, the tails of the opinion distribution are algebraic, and they are characterized by two distinct and nontrivial exponents. The standard paradigm of cosmology assumes General Relativity (GR) is a valid theory for gravity at scales in which it has not been properly tested. Developing novel tests of GR and its alternatives is crucial if we want to give strength to the model or find departures from GR in the data. Since alternatives to GR are usually defined through nonlinear equations, designing new tests for these theories implies a jump in complexity and thus, a need for refining the simulation techniques. We summarize existing techniques for dealing with modified gravity (MG) in the context of cosmological simulations. $N$-body codes for MG are usually based on standard gravity codes. We describe the required extensions, classifying the models not according to their original motivation, but by the numerical challenges that must be faced by numericists. MG models usually give rise to elliptic equations, for which multigrid techniques are well suited. Thus, we devote a large fraction of this review to describing this particular technique. Contrary to other reviews on multigrid methods, we focus on the specific techniques that are required to solve MG equations and describe useful tricks. Finally, we describe extensions for going beyond the static approximation and dealing with baryons., Comment: 37 pages. Chemical modelling serves two purposes in dynamical models: accounting for the effect of microphysics on the dynamics and providing observable signatures. Ideally, the former must be done as part of the hydrodynamic simulation but this comes with a prohibitive computational cost which leads to many simplifications being used in practice. To produce a statistical emulator that replicates a full chemical model capable of solving the temperature and abundances of a gas through time. This emulator should suffer only a minor loss of accuracy over including a full chemical solver in a dynamical model but would have a fraction of the computational cost. The gas-grain chemical code UCLCHEM was updated to include heating and cooling processes and a large dataset of model outputs from possible starting conditions was produced. A neural network was then trained to map directly from inputs to outputs. Chemulator replicates the outputs of UCLCHEM with an overall mean squared error (MSE) of 0.0002 for a single time step of 1000 yr and is shown to be stable over 1000 iterations with an MSE of 0.003 the log scaled temperature after one time step and 0.006 after 1000 time steps. Chemulator was found to be approximately 50,000 times faster than the time dependent model it emulates but can introduce a significant error to some models., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The maximin share (MMS) guarantee is a desirable fairness notion for allocating indivisible goods. While MMS allocations do not always exist, several approximation techniques have been developed to ensure that all agents receive a fraction of their maximin share. We focus on an alternative approximation notion, based on the population of agents, that seeks to guarantee MMS for a fraction of agents. We show that no optimal approximation algorithm can satisfy more than a constant number of agents, and discuss the existence and computation of MMS for all but one agent and its relation to approximate MMS guarantees. We then prove the existence of allocations that guarantee MMS for $\frac{2}{3}$ of agents, and devise a polynomial time algorithm that achieves this bound for up to nine agents. A key implication of our result is the existence of allocations that guarantee $\text{MMS}^{\lceil{3n/2}\rceil}$, i.e., the value that agents receive by partitioning the goods into $\lceil{\frac{3}{2}n}\rceil$ bundles, improving the best known guarantee of $\text{MMS}^{2n-2}$. When searching for new gravitational-wave or electromagnetic sources, the $n$ signal parameters (masses, sky location, frequencies,...) are unknown. In practice, one hunts for signals at a discrete set of points in parameter space, with a computational cost that is proportional to the number of these points. If that is fixed, the question arises, where should the points be placed in parameter space? The current literature advocates selecting the set of points (called a "template bank") whose Wigner-Seitz (also called Vorono\"i) cells have the smallest covering radius ($\equiv$ smallest maximal mismatch). Mathematically, such a template bank is said to have "minimum thickness". Here, for realistic populations of signal sources, we compute the fraction of potential detections which are "lost" because the template bank is discrete. We show that at fixed computational cost, the minimum thickness template bank does not maximize the expected number of detections. Instead, the most detections are obtained for a bank which minimizes a particular functional of the mismatch. For closely spaced templates, the fraction of lost detections is proportional to a scale-invariant "quantizer constant" G, which measures the average squared distance from the nearest template, i.e., the average expected mismatch. This provides a straightforward way to characterize and compare the effectiveness of different template banks. The template bank which minimizes G is mathematically called the "optimal quantizer", and maximizes the expected number of detections. Recently, knowledge distillation (KD) has shown great success in BERT compression. Instead of only learning from the teacher's soft label as in conventional KD, researchers find that the rich information contained in the hidden layers of BERT is conducive to the student's performance. To better exploit the hidden knowledge, a common practice is to force the student to deeply mimic the teacher's hidden states of all the tokens in a layer-wise manner. In this paper, however, we observe that although distilling the teacher's hidden state knowledge (HSK) is helpful, the performance gain (marginal utility) diminishes quickly as more HSK is distilled. To understand this effect, we conduct a series of analysis. Specifically, we divide the HSK of BERT into three dimensions, namely depth, length and width. We first investigate a variety of strategies to extract crucial knowledge for each single dimension and then jointly compress the three dimensions. In this way, we show that 1) the student's performance can be improved by extracting and distilling the crucial HSK, and 2) using a tiny fraction of HSK can achieve the same performance as extensive HSK distillation. Based on the second finding, we further propose an efficient KD paradigm to compress BERT, which does not require loading the teacher during the training of student. We analyze infection spreading processes in a system where only a fraction p of individuals can be affected by disease, while remaining 1 − p individuals are immune. Such a picture can emerge as a natural consequence of previously terminated epidemic process or arise in formerly vaccinated population. To this end, we apply the synchronous cellular automata algorithm studying stationary states and spatial patterning in SI, SIS and SIR models on a square lattice with the fraction p of active sites. A concept of “safety patterns” of susceptible agents surrounded by immune individuals naturally arises in a proposed system, which plays an important role in the course of epidemic processes under consideration. Detailed analysis of distribution of such patterns is given, which in turn determine the fraction of infected agents in a stationary state I ∗ ( p ) . Estimates for the threshold values of the basic reproduction number R 0 c as a function of active agents fraction p are obtained as well. In particular, our results allow to predict the optimal fraction of individuals, needed to be vaccinated in advance in order to get the maximal values of unaffected agents in a course of epidemic process with a given curing rate.

Given a finite set $X\subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ and a binary linear classifier $c:\mathbb{R}^{d}\rightarrow\{0,1\}$ , how many queries of the form $c(x)$ are required to learn the label of every point in $X$ ? Known as point location, this problem has inspired over 35 years of research in the pursuit of an optimal algorithm. Building on the prior work of Kane, Lovett, and Moran (ICALP 2018), we provide the first nearly optimal solution, a randomized linear decision tree of depth $\tilde{O}(d\log(\vert X\vert))$ , improving on the previous best of $\tilde{O}(\overline{d}^{2}\log(\vert X\vert))$ from Ezra and Sharir (Discrete and Computational Geometry, 2019). As a corollary, we also provide the first nearly optimal algorithm for actively learning halfspaces in the membership query model. En route to these results, building on the work of Carlen, Lieb, and Loss (J. Geometric Analysis 2004), as well as Dvir, Saraf, and Wigderson (STOC 2014), we prove a novel characterization of Barthe's Theorem (Inventiones Mathematicae, 1998) of independent interest. In particular, we show that $X$ may be transformed into approximate isotropic position if and only if there exists no $k$ -dimensional subspace with more than a $k/d$ -fraction of $X$ , and provide a similar characterization for exact isotropic position. Statistics of hierarchical systems containing three or more stars are continuously improving. The Multiple Star Catalog (MSC) is currently the most comprehensive catalogue of multiple-star systems and contains component masses, orbital periods, and additional information. The systems in the MSC are interesting for several reasons, including the long-term dynamical evolution of few-body systems. Although the secular evolution of triples and quadruples has been explored before, a systematic study of the systems in the MSC including also quintuples and sextuples has not been carried out. Here, we explore the main-sequence (MS) evolution of stars from the MSC based on approximately 2x10^5 secular dynamical integrations. We estimate statistical probabilities for strong interactions during the MS such as tidal evolution and mass transfer, and the onset of dynamical instability. Depending on the assumed model for the unknown orbital elements, we find that the fraction of noninteracting systems is largest for triples (~0.9), and decreases to ~0.6-0.8 for sextuples. The fraction of strong interactions increases from ~0.1 to ~0.2 from triples to sextuples, and the fraction of dynamically unstable systems increases from ~0.001 to ~0.1-0.2. The larger fractions of strong interactions and dynamical instability in systems with increasing multiplicity can be attributed to increasingly complex secular evolution in these systems. Validating a blockchain incurs heavy computation, communication, and storage costs. As a result, clients with limited resources, called light nodes, cannot verify transactions independently and must trust full nodes, making them vulnerable to security attacks. Motivated by this problem, we ask a fundamental question: can light nodes securely validate without any full nodes? We answer affirmatively by proposing CoVer, a decentralized protocol that allows a group of light nodes to collaboratively verify blocks even under a dishonest majority, achieving the same level of security for block validation as full nodes while only requiring a fraction of the work. In particular, work per node scales down proportionally with the number of participants (up to a log factor), resulting in computation, communication, and storage requirements that are sublinear in block size. Despite achieving strong performance in semi-supervised node classification task, graph neural networks (GNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, similar to other deep learning models. Existing researches focus on developing either robust GNN models or attack detection methods against adversarial attacks on graphs. However, little research attention is paid to the potential and practice of immunization to adversarial attacks on graphs. In this paper, we propose and formulate the graph adversarial immunization problem, i.e., vaccinating an affordable fraction of node pairs, connected or unconnected, to improve the certifiable robustness of graph against any admissible adversarial attack. We further propose an effective algorithm, called AdvImmune, which optimizes with meta-gradient in a discrete way to circumvent the computationally expensive combinatorial optimization when solving the adversarial immunization problem. Experiments are conducted on two citation networks and one social network. The Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered (SEIR) epidemiological model is one of the standard models of disease spreading. Here we analyse an extended SEIR model that accounts for asymptomatic carriers, believed to play an important role in COVID-19 transmission. For this model we derive a number of analytic results for important quantities such as the peak number of infections, the time taken to reach the peak and the size of the final affected population. We also propose an accurate way of specifying initial conditions for the numerics (from insufficient data) using the fact that the early time exponential growth is well-described by the dominant eigenvector of the linearized equations. Secondly we explore the effect of different intervention strategies such as social distancing (SD) and testing-quarantining (TQ). The two intervention strategies (SD and TQ) try to reduce the disease reproductive number, $R_0$, to a target value $R^{\rm target}_0 < 1$, but in distinct ways, which we implement in our model equations. We find that for the same $R^{\rm target}_0 < 1$, TQ is more efficient in controlling the pandemic than SD. However, for TQ to be effective, it has to be based on contact tracing and our study quantifies the required ratio of tests-per-day to the number of new cases-per-day. Our analysis shows that the largest eigenvalue of the linearised dynamics provides a simple understanding of the disease progression, both pre- and post- intervention, and explains observed data for many countries. We apply our results to the COVID data for India to obtain heuristic projections for the course of the pandemic, and note that the predictions strongly depend on the assumed fraction of asymptomatic carriers., 15 pages, 10 figures

Which combinatorial sequences correspond to moments of probability measures on the real line? We present a generating function, in the form of a continued fraction, for a fourteen-parameter family of such sequences and interpret these in terms of combinatorial statistics on the symmetric groups. Special cases include several classical and noncommutative probability laws, along with a substantial subset of the orthogonalizing measures in the q-Askey scheme, now given a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of elementary permutation statistics. This framework further captures a variety of interesting combinatorial sequences including, notably, the moment sequences associated to distributions of the numbers of occurrences of (classical and vincular) permutation patterns of length three. This connection between pattern avoidance and broader ideas in classical and noncommutative probability is among several intriguing new corollaries, which generalize and unify results previously appearing in the literature, while opening up new lines of inquiry. Shared high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, such as those provided by XSEDE and Compute Canada, enable researchers to carry out large-scale computational experiments at a fraction of the cost of the cloud. Most systems require the use of distributed filesystems (e.g. Lustre) for providing a highly multi-user, large capacity storage environment. These suffer performance penalties as the number of files increases due to network contention and metadata performance. We demonstrate how a combination of two technologies, Singularity and SquashFS, can help developers, integrators, architects, and scientists deploy large datasets (O(10M) files) on these shared systems with minimal performance limitations. The proposed integration enables more efficient access and indexing than normal file-based dataset installations, while providing transparent file access to users and processes. Furthermore, the approach does not require administrative privileges on the target system. While the examples studied here have been taken from the field of neuroimaging, the technologies adopted are not specific to that field. Currently, this solution is limited to read-only datasets. Multiple studies have been conducted to predict the impact and duration of the current COVID-19 epidemics. Most of those studies rely on parameter calibration using the published number of confirmed cases. Unfortunately, this number is usually incomplete and biased due to the lack of testing capacities, and varying testing protocols. An essential requirement for better monitoring is the evaluation of the number of undiagnosed infected individuals. This number is crucial for the determination of transmission prevention strategies and it provides statistics on the epidemic dynamics. To estimate the number of undiagnosed infected individuals, we studied the relation between the fraction of diagnosed infected out of all infected, and the fraction of infected with known contaminator out of all diagnosed infected. We simulated multiple models currently used to study the COVID-19 pandemic and computed the relation between these two fractions in all those models. Across most models currently used and for most realistic model parameters, the relation between the two fractions is consistently linear and model independent. This relation can be used to estimate the number of undiagnosed infected, with no explicit epidemiological model. We apply this method to measure the number of undiagnosed infected in Israel. Since the fraction of confirmed cases with a known source can be obtained from epidemiological investigations in any country, one can estimate the total number of infected individuals in the same country.

We consider LU and QR matrix decompositions using exact computations. We show that fraction-free Gauß–Bareiss reduction leads to triangular matrices having a non-trivial number of common row factors. We identify two types of common factors: systematic and statistical. Systematic factors depend on the reduction process, independent of the data, while statistical factors depend on the specific data. We relate the existence of row factors in the LU decomposition to factors appearing in the Smith–Jacobson normal form of the matrix. For statistical factors, we identify some of the mechanisms that create them and give estimates of the frequency of their occurrence. Similar observations apply to the common factors in a fraction-free QR decomposition. Our conclusions are tested experimentally.

As the COVID-19 outbreak is developing the two most frequently reported statistics seem to be the raw confirmed case and case fatalities counts. Focusing on Italy, one of the hardest hit countries, we look at how these two values could be put in perspective to reflect the dynamics of the virus spread. In particular, we find that merely considering the confirmed case counts would be very misleading. The number of daily tests grows, while the daily fraction of confirmed cases to total tests has a change point. It (depending on region) generally increases with strong fluctuations till (around, depending on region) 15th-22nd March and then decreases linearly after. Combined with the increasing trend of daily performed tests, the raw confirmed case counts are not representative of the situation and are confounded with the sampling effort. This we observe when regressing on time the logged fraction of positive tests and for comparison the logged raw confirmed count. Hence, calibrating model parameters for this virus's dynamics should not be done based only on confirmed case counts (without rescaling by the number of tests), but take also fatalities and hospitalization count under consideration as variables not prone to be distorted by testing efforts. Furthermore, reporting statistics on the national level does not say much about the dynamics of the disease, which are taking place at the regional level. These findings are based on the official data of total death counts up to 15th April 2020 released by ISTAT and up to 10th May 2020 for the number of cases. In this work we do not fit models but we rather investigate whether this task is possible at all. The notion of symmetric and asymmetric peaks in Dyck paths was introduced by Florez and Rodriguez, who counted the total number of such peaks over all Dyck paths of a given length. In this paper we generalize their results by giving multivariate generating functions that keep track of the number of symmetric peaks and the number of asymmetric peaks, as well as the widths of these peaks. We recover a formula of Denise and Simion as a special case of our results. We also consider the analogous but more intricate notion of symmetric valleys. We find a continued fraction expression for the generating function of Dyck paths with respect to the number of symmetric valleys and the sum of their widths, which provides an unexpected connection between symmetric valleys and statistics on ordered rooted trees. Finally, we enumerate Dyck paths whose peak or valley heights satisfy certain monotonicity and unimodality conditions, using a common framework to recover some known results, and relating our questions to the enumeration of certain classes of column-convex polyominoes.

One of the most crucial challenges in question answering (QA) is the scarcity of labeled data, since it is costly to obtain question-answer (QA) pairs for a target text domain with human annotation. An alternative approach to tackle the problem is to use automatically generated QA pairs from either the problem context or from large amount of unstructured texts (e.g. Wikipedia). In this work, we propose a hierarchical conditional variational autoencoder (HCVAE) for generating QA pairs given unstructured texts as contexts, while maximizing the mutual information between generated QA pairs to ensure their consistency. We validate our Information Maximizing Hierarchical Conditional Variational AutoEncoder (Info-HCVAE) on several benchmark datasets by evaluating the performance of the QA model (BERT-base) using only the generated QA pairs (QA-based evaluation) or by using both the generated and human-labeled pairs (semi-supervised learning) for training, against state-of-the-art baseline models. In the multidimensional stable roommate problem, agents have to be allocated to rooms and have preferences over sets of potential roommates. We study the complexity of finding good allocations of agents to rooms under the assumption that agents have diversity preferences [Bredereck et al., 2019]: each agent belongs to one of the two types (e.g., juniors and seniors, artists and engineers), and agents' preferences over rooms depend solely on the fraction of agents of their own type among their potential roommates. We consider various solution concepts for this setting, such as core and exchange stability, Pareto optimality and envy-freeness. On the negative side, we prove that envy-free, core stable or (strongly) exchange stable outcomes may fail to exist and that the associated decision problems are NP-complete. On the positive side, we show that these problems are in FPT with respect to the room size, which is not the case for the general stable roommate problem. Moreover, for the classic setting with rooms of size two, we present a linear-time algorithm that computes an outcome that is core and exchange stable as well as Pareto optimal. The challenges presented by the COVID-19 epidemic have created a renewed interest in the development of new methods to combat infectious diseases. A prominent property of the SARS-CoV-2 transmission is the significant fraction of asymptomatic transmission. This may influence the effectiveness of the standard contact tracing procedure for quarantining potentially infected individuals. However, the effects of asymptomatic transmission on the epidemic threshold of epidemic spreading on networks are largely unknown. Here we study the critical percolation transition in a simple epidemic network model in the presence of a recursive contact tracing algorithm for instant quarantining. We find that, above a certain fraction of asymptomatic transmission, standard contact tracing loses its ability to suppress spreading below the epidemic threshold. However, we also find that recursive contact tracing opens a possibility to contain epidemics with a large fraction of asymptomatic or presymptomatic transmission. In particular, we calculate the required fraction of network nodes participating in the contact tracing for networks with arbitrary degree distributions and for varying recursion depths and discuss the influence of recursion depth and asymptomatic rate on the epidemic percolation phase transition. We test and illustrate our theoretical results using numerical simulations on infection trees and networks. We anticipate recursive contact tracing to provide a basis for digital, app-based contact tracing tools that extend the efficiency of contact tracing to diseases with a large fraction of asymptomatic transmission., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

There exist discrepancies in measurements of the number and evolution of galaxy pairs. The pair fraction appears to be sensitive to both the criteria used to select pair fraction and the methods used to analyze survey data. This paper explores the connection between stellar mass estimation and the pair fraction of galaxies making use of STEEL, the Statistical sEmi-Emprical modeL. Previous results have found the pair fraction is sensitive to choices made when selecting what qualifies as a pair, for example luminosity or stellar mass selections. We find that different estimations of stellar mass such as photometric choice mass-to-light ratio or IMF that effect the stellar mass function also significantly affect the derived galaxy pair fraction. By making use of the galaxy halo connection we investigate these systematic affects on the pair fraction. We constrain the galaxy halo connection using the stellar-mass-halo-mass relationship for two observed stellar mass functions, and the Illustris TNG stellar mass function. Furthermore, we also create a suite of toy models where the stellar-mass-halo-mass relationship is manually changed. For each stellar-mass-halo-mass relation the pair fraction, and its evolution, are generated. We find that enhancements to the number density of high mass galaxies cause steepening of the stellar-mass-halo mass relation, resulting in a reduction of the pair fraction. We consider the planar Euclidean two-center problem in which given $n$ points in the plane we are to find two congruent disks of the smallest radius covering the points. We present a deterministic $O(n \log n)$-time algorithm for the case that the centers of the two optimal disks are close to each other, that is, the overlap of the two optimal disks is a constant fraction of the disk area. We also present a deterministic $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm for the case that the input points are in convex position. Recognizing the flow of time in a story is a crucial aspect of understanding it. Prior work related to time has primarily focused on identifying temporal expressions or relative sequencing of events, but here we propose computationally annotating each line of a book with wall clock times, even in the absence of explicit time-descriptive phrases. To do so, we construct a data set of hourly time phrases from 52,183 fictional books. We then construct a time-of-day classification model that achieves an average error of 2.27 hours. Furthermore, we show that by analyzing a book in whole using dynamic programming of breakpoints, we can roughly partition a book into segments that each correspond to a particular time-of-day. This approach improves upon baselines by over two hours. Finally, we apply our model to a corpus of literature categorized by different periods in history, to show interesting trends of hourly activity throughout the past. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are a promising new probe for astronomy and cosmology. Thanks to their extragalactic and cosmological origin, FRBs could be used to study the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the cosmic expansion. It is expected that numerous FRBs with identified redshifts will be available in the near future through the identification of their host galaxies or counterparts. $\rm DM_{IGM}$, the contribution from IGM to the observed dispersion measure (DM) of FRB, carries the key information about IGM and the cosmic expansion history. We can thus study the evolution of the universe by using FRBs with identified redshifts. In the present work, we are interested in the fraction of baryon mass in the IGM, $f_{\rm IGM}$, which is useful to study the cosmic expansion and the problem of the "missing baryons". We propose to reconstruct the evolution of $f_{\rm IGM}$ as a function of redshift $z$ with FRBs via a completely model-independent method, namely Gaussian processes. Since there is not a large sample of FRBs with identified redshifts, we use simulated FRBs instead. We introduce the generic Lah polynomials $L_{n,k}(\phi)$, which enumerate unordered forests of increasing ordered trees with a weight $\phi_i$ for each vertex with $i$ children. We show that, if the weight sequence $\phi$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the triangular array of generic Lah polynomials is totally positive and the sequence of row-generating polynomials $L_n(\phi,y)$ is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. Upon specialization we obtain results for the Lah symmetric functions and multivariate Lah polynomials of positive and negative type. The multivariate Lah polynomials of positive type are also given by a branched continued fraction. Our proofs use mainly the method of production matrices; the production matrix is obtained by a bijection from ordered forests of increasing ordered trees to labeled partial Lukasiewicz paths. We consider a participatory budgeting problem in which each voter submits a proposal for how to divide a single divisible resource (such as money or time) among several possible alternatives (such as public projects or activities) and these proposals must be aggregated into a single aggregate division. Under $\ell_1$ preferences -- for which a voter's disutility is given by the $\ell_1$ distance between the aggregate division and the division he or she most prefers -- the social welfare-maximizing mechanism, which minimizes the average $\ell_1$ distance between the outcome and each voter's proposal, is incentive compatible (Goel et al. 2016). However, it fails to satisfy the natural fairness notion of proportionality, placing too much weight on majority preferences. Leveraging a connection between market prices and the generalized median rules of Moulin (1980), we introduce the independent markets mechanism, which is both incentive compatible and proportional. We unify the social welfare-maximizing mechanism and the independent markets mechanism by defining a broad class of moving phantom mechanisms that includes both. We show that every moving phantom mechanism is incentive compatible. Finally, we characterize the social welfare-maximizing mechanism as the unique Pareto-optimal mechanism in this class, suggesting an inherent tradeoff between Pareto optimality and proportionality., Comment: 28 pages, final journal version

Under the Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) model, an administrator has the mission to allocate dynamically a limited budget of resources to the nodes of a network in order to reduce a diffusion process (DP) (e.g. an epidemic). The standard DRA assumes that the administrator has constantly full information and instantaneous access to the entire network. Towards bringing such strategies closer to real-life constraints, we first present the Restricted DRA model extension where, at each intervention round, the access is restricted to only a fraction of the network nodes, called sample. Then, inspired by sequential selection problems such as the well-known Secretary Problem, we propose the Sequential DRA (SDRA) model. Our model introduces a sequential aspect in the decision process over the sample of each round, offering a completely new perspective to the dynamic DP control. Finally, we incorporate several sequential selection algorithms to SDRA control strategies and compare their performance in SIS epidemic simulations., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We apply two sparse reconstruction techniques, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and the sparse exponential mode analysis (SEMA), to two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy. The algorithms are first tested on model data, showing that both are able to reconstruct the spectra using only a fraction of the data required by the traditional Fourier-based estimator. Through the analysis of the sparsely sampled experimental fluorescence-detected 2D spectra of LH2 complexes, we conclude that both SEMA and LASSO can be used to significantly reduce the required data, still allowing one to reconstruct the multidimensional spectra. Of the two techniques, it is shown that SEMA offers preferable performance, providing more accurate estimation of the spectral line widths and their positions. Furthermore, SEMA allows for off-grid components, enabling the use of a much smaller dictionary than that of the LASSO, thereby improving both the performance and the lowering of the computational complexity for reconstructing coherent multidimensional spectra.

For a compact abelian group $G$, a corner in $G \times G$ is a triple of points $(x,y)$, $(x,y+d)$, $(x+d,y)$. The classical corners theorem of Ajtai and Szemer\'edi implies that for every $\alpha > 0$, there is some $\delta > 0$ such that every subset $A \subset G \times G$ of density $\alpha$ contains a $\delta$ fraction of all corners in $G \times G$, as $x,y,d$ range over $G$. Recently, Mandache proved a "popular differences" version of this result in the finite field case $G = \mathbb F_p^n$, showing that for any subset $A \subset G \times G$ of density $\alpha$, one can fix $d \neq 0$ such that $A$ contains a large fraction, now known to be approximately $\alpha^4$, of all corners with difference $d$, as $x,y$ vary over $G$. Experimentation has become an increasingly prevalent tool for guiding decision-making and policy choices. A common hurdle in designing experiments is the lack of statistical power. In this paper, we study the optimal multi-period experimental design under the constraint that the treatment cannot be easily removed once implemented; for example, a government might implement a public health intervention in different geographies at different times, where the treatment cannot be easily removed due to practical constraints. The treatment design problem is to select which geographies (referred by units) to treat at which time, intending to test hypotheses about the effect of the treatment. When the potential outcome is a linear function of unit and time effects, and discrete observed/latent covariates, we provide an analytically feasible solution to the optimal treatment design problem where the variance of the treatment effect estimator is at most 1+O(1/N^2) times the variance using the optimal treatment design, where N is the number of units. This solution assigns units in a staggered treatment adoption pattern -- if the treatment only affects one period, the optimal fraction of treated units in each period increases linearly in time; if the treatment affects multiple periods, the optimal fraction increases non-linearly in time, smaller at the beginning and larger at the end. In the general setting where outcomes depend on latent covariates, we show that historical data can be utilized in designing experiments. We propose a data-driven local search algorithm to assign units to treatment times. We demonstrate that our approach improves upon benchmark experimental designs via synthetic interventions on the influenza occurrence rate and synthetic experiments on interventions for in-home medical services and grocery expenditure.

We present a simple yet effective prediction module for a one-stage detector. The main process is conducted in a coarse-to-fine manner. First, the module roughly adjusts the default boxes to well capture the extent of target objects in an image. Second, given the adjusted boxes, the module aligns the receptive field of the convolution filters accordingly, not requiring any embedding layers. Both steps build a propose-and-attend mechanism, mimicking two-stage detectors in a highly efficient manner. To verify its effectiveness, we apply the proposed module to a basic one-stage detector SSD. Our final model achieves an accuracy comparable to that of state-of-the-art detectors while using a fraction of their model parameters and computational overheads. Moreover, we found that the proposed module has two strong applications. 1) The module can be successfully integrated into a lightweight backbone, further pushing the efficiency of the one-stage detector. 2) The module also allows train-from-scratch without relying on any sophisticated base networks as previous methods do., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 7 tables

The geometric block model is a recently proposed generative model for random graphs that is able to capture the inherent geometric properties of many community detection problems, providing more accurate characterizations of practical community structures compared with the popular stochastic block model. Galhotra et al. recently proposed a motif-counting algorithm for unsupervised community detection in the geometric block model that is proved to be near-optimal. They also characterized the regimes of the model parameters for which the proposed algorithm can achieve exact recovery. In this work, we initiate the study of active learning in the geometric block model. That is, we are interested in the problem of exactly recovering the community structure of random graphs following the geometric block model under arbitrary model parameters, by possibly querying the labels of a limited number of chosen nodes. We propose two active learning algorithms that combine the idea of motif-counting with two different label query policies. Our main contribution is to show that sampling the labels of a vanishingly small fraction of nodes (sub-linear in the total number of nodes) is sufficient to achieve exact recovery in the regimes under which the state-of-the-art unsupervised method fails.
