If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_0$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I, X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. It is shown that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non locally convex quasi Banach spaces X with a basis for which $C(I, X)$ and $C(\Delta, X)$ are isomorphic. We characterize functions of finite energy in the plane in terms of their traces on the lines that make up "graph paper" with squares of side length $mn$ for all $n$, and certain $\12-$order Sobolev norms on the graph paper lines. We also obtain analogous results for functions of finite energy on two classical fractals: the Sierpinski gasket and the Sierpinski carpet.

In section 8.3 of our paper "Duality and Flat Base Change on Formal Schemes" (http://arXiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9708006) some important results concerning localization of, and preservation of coherence by, basic duality functors, were based on the false statement that any closed formal subscheme of an open subscheme of the completion P of a relative projective space is an open subscheme of a closed formal subscheme of P. In this note, the said results are provided with solid foundations.

We show that bounded self-contracted curves are rectifiable in metric spaces with weak lower curvature bound in a sense we introduce in this article. This class of spaces is wide and includes, for example, finite-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of curvature bounded below and Berwald spaces of nonnegative flag curvature. (To be more precise, our condition is regarded as a strengthened doubling condition and holds also for a certain class of metric spaces with upper curvature bound.) We also provide the non-embeddability of large snowflakes into (balls in) metric spaces in the same class. We follow the strategy of the last author's previous paper based on the small rough angle condition, where spaces with upper curvature bound are considered. Some time ago has been studied mathematical models for biogas production due to its importance in the use of control and optimization of re\-new\-able resources and clean energy. In this paper we combine two algebraic methods to obtain solutions of Abel equation of first kind that arise from a mathematical model to biogas production formulated in France on 2001. The aim of this paper is obtain Liouvillian solutions of Abel's equations through Hamiltonian Algebrization. In convex integer programming, various procedures have been developed to strengthen convex relaxations of sets of integer points. On the one hand, there exist several general-purpose methods that strengthen relaxations without specific knowledge of the set S of feasible integer points, such as popular linear programming or semi-definite programming hierarchies. On the other hand, various methods have been designed for obtaining strengthened relaxations for very specific sets S that arise in combinatorial optimization. We propose a new efficient method that interpolates between these two approaches. Our procedure strengthens any convex set containing a set S⊆ { 0 ,1 } n by exploiting certain additional information about S. Namely, the required extra information will be in the form of a Boolean formula ϕ defining the target set S. The new relaxation is obtained by “feeding” the convex set into the formula ϕ. We analyze various aspects regarding the strength of our procedure. In this short paper, we give an upper bound for the number of different basic feasible solutions generated by the simplex method for linear programming problems having optimal solutions. The bound is polynomial of the number of constraints, the number of variables, and the ratio between the minimum and the maximum values of all the positive elements of primal basic feasible solutions. When the primal problem is nondegenerate, it becomes a bound for the number of iterations. We show some basic results when it is applied to special linear programming problems. In this short note we show that non-negative Ricci curvature is not preserved under Ricci flow for closed manifolds of dimensions four and above, strengthening a previous result of Knopf in \cite{K} for complete non-compact manifolds of bounded curvature. This brings down to four dimensions a similar result B\"ohm and Wilking have for dimensions twelve and above, \cite{BW}. In 1981, Foias, Guillop\'e and Temam proved a priori estimates for arbitrary-order space derivatives of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. Such bounds are instructive in the numerical investigation of intermittency often observed in simulations, e.g., numerical study of vorticity moments by Donzis et al. (2013) revealed depletion of nonlinearity that may be responsible for smoothness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. We employ an original method to derive analogous estimates for space derivatives of three-dimensional space-periodic weak solutions to the evolutionary equations of diffusive magnetohydrodynamics. Construction relies on space analyticity of the solutions at almost all times. An auxiliary problem is introduced, and a Sobolev norm of its solutions bounds from below the size in $C^3$ of the region of space analyticity of the solutions to the original problem. We recover the exponents obtained earlier for the hydrodynamic problem. The same approach is also followed here to derive and prove similar a priori bounds for arbitrary-order space derivatives of the first-order time derivative of the weak MHD solutions. In 1973, Diestel published his seminal paper `Grothendieck spaces and vector measures' that drew a connection between Grothendieck spaces (Banach spaces for which weak- and weak*-sequential convergences in the dual space coincide) and vector measures. This connection was developed in his book with J. Uhl Jr. `Vector measures'. Additionally, Diestel's paper included a section with several open problems about the structural properties of Grothendieck spaces, and only half of them have been solved to this day. In the celebrated paper by Jean Leray, published in JMPA journal in 1933, the invading domains method was proposed to construct D-solutions for the stationary Navier-Stokes flow around obstacle problem. In two dimensions, whether Leray's D-solution achieves the prescribed limiting velocity at spatial infinity became a major open problem since then. In this paper, we solve this problem at small Reynolds numbers. The proof builds on a novel blow-down argument which rescales the invading domains to the unit disc, and the ideas developed in a recent paper [Korobkov-Pileckas-Russo2020], where the nontriviality of Leray solutions in the general case was proved, and [Korobkov-Ren-2021], where the uniqueness result for small Reynolds number was established.

We prove strengthenings of the Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for weakly mixing and strongly mixing measure preserving systems. We show that our pointwise theorem for weakly mixing systems is strictly stronger than the Wiener-Wintner Theorem. We also show that our pointwise Theorems for weakly mixing and strongly mixing systems characterize weakly mixing systems and strongly mixing systems respectively. The methods of this paper also allow one to prove an enhanced pointwise ergodic theorem for other levels of the ergodic hierarchy such as ergodicity and mild mixing but not K-mixing. In this paper, the authors consider an initial boundary value problem for the heat flow of equation of surfaces with constant mean curvatures, which was investigated in [On the heat flow of equation of surfaces of constant mean curvatures, Manuscripta Mathematica, 2011, 134: 259-271] by Huang et al., where global well-posedness and finite time blow-up of regular solutions were obtained. Their results are complemented in this paper in the sense that some new conditions on the initial data are provided for the solutions to develop finite time singularity.

This paper proposes a novel method for the prevention of the unbounded oscillation of an aircraft wings under the flexural torsion flutter. The paper introducing the novel multiagent method for control of an aircraft wing, assuming that the wing surface consists of controlled "feathers" (agents). Theoretical evaluation of the approach demonstrates its high ability to prevent flexural-torsional vibrations of an aircraft. Since the model expands the possibilities for damping the wing oscillations, which potentially allows an increase in aircraft speed without misgiving of flutter. The study exhibits that timing is the main limitation of dampening vibrations. A new method for controlling an aircraft wing is suggested to increase the maximal flight speed of an aircraft without flutter occurrence via a novel model of the bending-torsional vibrations of an airplane wing with controlled feathers on its surface and new control laws based on the Speed-Gradient methodology. A nonlinear Markov chain is a discrete time stochastic process whose transitions depend on both the current state and the current distribution of the process. The nonlinear Markov chain over an infinite state space can be identified by a continuous mapping (the so-called nonlinear Markov operator) defined on a set of all probability distributions (which is a simplex). In the present paper, we consider a continuous analogue of the mentioned mapping acting on L 1 -spaces. Main aim of the current paper is to investigate projective surjectivity of quadratic stochastic operators (QSO) acting on the set of all probability measures. To prove the main result, we study the surjectivity of infinite dimensional nonlinear Markov operators and apply them to the projective surjectivity of the considered QSO. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to the existence of the positive solution of some Hammerstein integral equations.

Several results in the existing literature establish Euclidean density theorems of the following strong type. These results claim that every set of positive upper Banach density in the Euclidean space of an appropriate dimension contains isometric copies of all sufficiently large elements of a prescribed family of finite point configurations. So far, all results of this type discussed linear isotropic dilates of a fixed point configuration. In this paper we initiate the study of analogous density theorems for families of point configurations generated by anisotropic dilations, i.e., families with power-type dependence on a single parameter interpreted as their size. More specifically, here we prove nonisotropic power-type generalizations of a result by Bourgain on vertices of a simplex, a result by Lyall and Magyar on vertices of a rectangular box, and a result on distance trees, which is a particular case of the treatise of distance graphs by Lyall and Magyar. Another source of motivation for this paper is providing additional evidence for the versatility of the approach stemming from the work of Cook, Magyar, and Pramanik and its modification used recently by Durcik and the present author. In our Novi Sad conference paper (1999) we described Dehn type surgeries of the famous Gieseking (1912) hyperbolic ideal simplex manifold $\mathcal{S}$, leading to compact fundamental domain $\mathcal{S}(k)$, $k = 2, 3, \dots$ with singularity geodesics of rotation order $k$, but as later turned out with cone angle $2(k-1)/k$. We computed also the volume of $S(k)$, tending to zero if $k$ goes to infinity. That time we naively thought that we obtained orbifolds with the above surprising property. As the reviewer of Math. Rev., Kevin P. Scannell (MR1770996 (2001g:57030)) rightly remarked, "this is in conflict with the well-known theorem of D. A. Kazhdan and G. A. Margulis (1968) and with the work of Thurston, describing the geometric convergence of orbifolds under large Dehn fillings". In this paper we refresh our previous publication. Correctly, we obtained cone manifolds (for $k > 2$), as A. D. Mednykh and V. S. Petrov (2006) kindly pointed out. We complete our discussion and derive the above cone manifold series (Gies.1 and Gies.2) in two geometrically equivalent form, by the half turn symmetry of any ideal simplex. In 1900, at the international congress of mathematicians, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equations on its region of analyticity. In 2015, Van Gorder considered the question of whether $\zeta(s)$ satisfies a non-algebraic differential equation and showed that it formally satisfies an infinite order linear differential equation. Recently, Prado and Klinger-Logan extended Van Gorder's result to show that the Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ is also formally satisfies a similar differential equation \begin{equation*}\label{HurDE} T\left[\zeta (s,a) - \frac{1}{a^s}\right] = \frac{1}{(s-1)a^{s-1}}. \end{equation*} But unfortunately in the same paper they proved that the operator $T$ applied to Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ does not converge at any point in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we investigate the property (HLUR), a generalisation of (LUR) property of a Banach space. A Banach space having the property (HLUR) is called an HLUR space. We characterise (HLUR) property with the help of known geometric properties and study various properties of HLUR spaces. We show that for any finite dimensional Banach space, the property (HLUR) coincides with anti-Daugavet property of the space. We study numerical integration for a weighted Korobov space of analytic periodic functions for which the Fourier coefficients decay exponentially fast. In particular, we are interested in how the error depends on the dimension d . Many recent papers deal with this problem or similar problems and provide matching necessary and sufficient conditions for various notions of tractability. In most cases even simple algorithms are known which allow to achieve these notions of tractability. However, there is a gap in the literature: while for the notion of exponential-weak tractability one knows matching necessary and sufficient conditions, so far no explicit algorithm has been known which yields the desired result. In this paper we close this gap and prove that Korobov lattice rules are suitable algorithms in order to achieve exponential-weak tractability for integration in weighted Korobov spaces of analytic periodic functions.

We consider a class of tempered subordinators, namely a class of subordinators with one-dimensional marginal tempered distributions which belong to a family studied in [3]. The main contribution in this paper is a non-central moderate deviations result. More precisely we mean a class of large deviation principles that fill the gap between the (trivial) weak convergence of some non-Gaussian identically distributed random variables to their common law, and the convergence of some other related random variables to a constant. Some other minor results concern large deviations for the inverse of the tempered subordinators considered in this paper; actually, in some results, these inverse processes appear as random time-changes of other independent processes.

An $n$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$ but adding any missing edge to $G$ creates a copy of $H$. More than half a century ago, Wessel and Bollob\'as independently solved the problem of minimizing the number of edges in $K_{(s,t)}$-saturated graphs, where $K_{(s,t)}$ is the `ordered' complete bipartite graph with $s$ vertices from the first color class and $t$ from the second. However, the very natural `unordered' analogue of this problem was considered only half a decade ago by Moshkovitz and Shapira. When $s=t$, it can be easily checked that the unordered variant is exactly the same as the ordered case. Later, Gan, Kor\'andi, and Sudakov gave an asymptotically tight bound on the minimum number of edges in $K_{s,t}$-saturated $n$ by $n$ bipartite graphs, which is only smaller than the conjecture of Moshkovitz and Shapira by an additive constant. In this paper, we confirm their conjecture for $s=t-1$ with the classification of the extremal graphs. This paper presents some new propositions related to the fractional order $h$-difference operators, for the case of general quadratic forms and for the polynomial type, which allow proving the stability of fractional order $h$-difference systems, by means of the discrete fractional Lyapunov direct method, using general quadratic Lyapunov functions, and polynomial Lyapunov functions of any positive integer order, respectively. In this paper, we consider the problem of computing the rank of a block-structured symbolic matrix (a generic partitioned matrix) $A = (A_{\alpha \beta} x_{\alpha \beta})$, where $A_{\alpha \beta}$ is a $2 \times 2$ matrix over a field $\mathbf{F}$ and $x_{\alpha \beta}$ is an indeterminate for $\alpha = 1,2,\dots, \mu$ and $\beta = 1,2, \dots, \nu$. This problem can be viewed as an algebraic generalization of the bipartite matching problem and was considered by Iwata and Murota (1995). Recent interests in this problem lie in the connection with non-commutative Edmonds' problem by Ivanyos, Qiao, and Subrahamanyam (2018) and Garg, Gurvits, Oliveiva, and Wigderson (2019), where a result by Iwata and Murota implicitly states that the rank and non-commutative rank (nc-rank) are the same for this class of symbolic matrices. The main result of this paper is a simple and combinatorial $O((\mu \nu)^2 \min \{ \mu, \nu \})$-time algorithm for computing the symbolic rank of a $(2 \times 2)$-type generic partitioned matrix of size $2\mu \times 2\nu$. Our algorithm is inspired by the Wong sequence algorithm by Ivanyos, Qiao, and Subrahamanyam for the nc-rank of a general symbolic matrix, and requires no blow-up operation, no field extension, and no additional care for bounding the bit-size. In his PhD thesis, Goosen combined the string-net and the generators-and-relations formalisms for arbitrary once-extended 3-dimensional TQFTs. In this paper we work this out in detail for the simplest non-trivial example, where the underlying spherical fusion category is the category of $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-graded vector spaces. This allows us to give an elementary string-net description of the linear maps associated to 3-dimensional bordisms. The string-net formalism also simplifies the description of the mapping class group action in the resulting TQFT. We prove that ascending HNN extensions of free groups are word-hyperbolic if and only if they have no Baumslag-Solitar subgroups. This extends the theorem of Brinkmann that free-by-cyclic groups are word-hyperbolic if and only if they have no free abelian subgroups of rank 2. The paper is split into two independent parts: 1) We study the dynamics of injective nonsurjective endomorphisms of free groups. We prove a canonical structure theorem that initializes the development of improved relative train tracks for endomorphisms; this structure theorem is of independent interest since it makes many open questions about injective endomorphisms tractable. 2) As an application of the structure theorem, we are able to (relatively) combine Brinkmann's theorem with our previous work and obtain the main result stated above. International audience; We present a new notion of solution for mean field games master equations. This notion allows us to work with solutions which are merely continuous. We prove first results of uniqueness and stability for such solutions. It turns out that this notion is helpful to characterize the value function of mean field games of optimal stopping or impulse control and this is the topic of the second half of this paper. The notion of solution we introduce is only useful in the monotone case. We focus in this paper in the finite state space case.

One of the basic facts known for discrete-time Markov decision processes is that, if the probability distribution of an initial state is fixed, then for every policy it is easy to construct a (randomized) Markov policy with the same marginal distributions of state-action pairs as for the original policy. This equality of marginal distributions implies that the values of major objective criteria, including expected discounted total costs and average rewards per unit time, are equal for these two policies. This paper investigates the validity of the similar fact for continuous-time jump Markov decision processes (CTJMDPs). It is shown in this paper that the equality of marginal distributions takes place for a CTJMDP if the corresponding Markov policy defines a nonexplosive jump Markov process. If this Markov process is explosive, then at each time instance, the marginal probability, that a state-action pair belongs to a measurable set of state-action pairs, is not greater for the described Markov policy than the same probability for the original policy. These results are applied in this paper to CTJMDPs with expected discounted total costs and average costs per unit time. It is shown for these criteria that, if the initial state distribution is fixed, then for every policy, there exists a Markov policy with the same or better value of the objective function.

We study in detail the so-called Chow-weight homology of Voevodsky motivic complexes and relate it to motivic homology. We generalize earlier results and prove that the vanishing of higher motivic homology groups of a motif $M$ implies similar vanishing for its Chow-weight homology along with effectivity properties of the higher terms of its weight complex $t(M)$ and of higher Deligne weight quotients of its cohomology. Applying this statement to motives with compact support we obtain a similar relation between the vanishing of Chow groups and the cohomology with compact support of varieties. Moreover, we prove that if higher motivic homology groups of a geometric motif or a variety over a universal domain are torsion (in a certain "range") then the exponents of these groups are uniformly bounded. To prove our main results we study Voevodsky slices of motives. Since the slice functors do not respect the compactness of motives, the results of the previous Chow-weight homology paper are not sufficient for our purposes; this is our main reason to extend them to ($w_{Chow}$-bounded below) motivic complexes., Comment: This a new paper on Chow-weight homology; thus it is closely related to extending the decomposition of the diagonal theory to Voevodsky motives. This paper is devoted to a simple proof of the generalized Leibniz rule in bounded domains. The operators under consideration are the so-called spectral Laplacian and the restricted Laplacian. Equations involving such operators have lately been considered by Constantin and Ignatova in the framework of the SQG equation [P. Constantin and M. Ignatova, Critical SQG in bounded domains, Ann. PDE 2 2016, 2, Article ID 8] in bounded domains, and by two of the authors [Q.-H. Nguyen and J. L. Vázquez, Porous medium equation with nonlocal pressure in a bounded domain, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 43 2018, 10, 1502–1539] in the framework of the porous medium with nonlocal pressure in bounded domains. We will use the estimates in this work in a forthcoming paper on the study of porous medium equations with pressure given by Riesz-type potentials.

This paper presents a detailed theoretical analysis of the three stochastic approximation proximal gradient algorithms proposed in our companion paper [49] to set regularization parameters by marginal maximum likelihood estimation. We prove the convergence of a more general stochastic approximation scheme that includes the three algorithms of [49] as special cases. This includes asymptotic and non-asymptotic convergence results with natural and easily verifiable conditions, as well as explicit bounds on the convergence rates. Importantly, the theory is also general in that it can be applied to other intractable optimisation problems. A main novelty of the work is that the stochastic gradient estimates of our scheme are constructed from inexact proximal Markov chain Monte Carlo samplers. A new transparent proof of the well known good compactification theorem for the complex torus $(\Bbb C^*)^n$ is presented. This theorem provides a powerful tool in enumerative geometry for subvarieties in the complex torus. The paper also contains an algorithm constructing a good compactification for a subvariety in $(\Bbb C^*)^n$ explicitly defined by a system of equations. A new theorem on a torodoidal like compactification is stated. We investigate the time-asymptotically nonlinear stability of rarefaction waves to the Cauchy problem of an one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes type system for a viscous, compressible, radiative and reactive gas, where the constitutive relations for the pressure $p$, the specific internal energy $e$, the specific volume $v$, the absolute temperature $\theta$, and the specific entropy $s$ are given by $p=R\theta/v +a\theta^4/3$, $e=C_v\theta+av\theta^4$, and $s=C_v\ln \theta+ 4av\theta^3/3+R\ln v$ with $R>0$, $C_{v}>0$, and $a>0$ being the perfect gas constant, the specific heat and the radiation constant, respectively. For such a specific gas motion, a somewhat surprising fact is that, general speaking, the pressure $\widetilde{p}(v,s)$ is not a convex function of the specific volume $v$ and the specific entropy $s$. Even so, we show in this paper that the rarefaction waves are time-asymptotically stable for large initial perturbation provided that the radiation constant $a$ and the strength of the rarefaction waves are sufficiently small. Applying circle inversion on a square grid filled with circles, we obtain a configuration that we call a fabric of kissing circles. The configuration and its components, which are two orthogonal frames and two orthogonal families of chains, are in some way connected to classical geometric configurations such as the arbelos or the Pappus chain, or the Apollonian packing from the 20th century. In this paper, we build the fabric and list some of the obvious properties that result from this construction. Next, we focus on the curvature inside the individual components: we show that the curvatures of the frame circles form a doubly infinite arithmetic sequence (bi-sequence), whereas the curvatures of the circles of each chain are arranged in a quadratic bi-sequence. Because solving geometric sangaku problems was a gateway to our discovery of the fabric, we conclude this paper with two sangaku problems and their solutions using our results on curvatures., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures. In this paper, using computations done through the LiE software, we compare the tensor product of irreducible selfdual representations of the special linear group with those of classical groups to formulate some conjectures relating the two. In the process a few other phenomenon present themselves which we record as questions. More precisely, under the natural correspondence of irreducible finite dimensional selfdual representations of ${\rm SL}_{2n}({\mathbb C})$ with those of ${\rm Spin}_{2n+1}({\mathbb C})$, it is easy to see that if the tensor product of three irreducible representations of ${\rm Spin}_{2n+1}({\rm C})$ contains the trivial representation, then so does the tensor product of the corresponding representations of ${\rm SL}_{2n}({\rm C})$. This work is devoted to the studies of a Hamilton--Jacobi equation with a quadratic and degenerate Hamiltonian, which comes from the dynamics of a multipeakon in the Camassa--Holm equation. It is given by a quadratic form with a singular positive semi-definite matrix. We increase the regularity of the value function considered in our previous paper, which is known to be the viscosity solution. We prove that for a two-peakon Hamiltonian such solutions are actually $1/2$-H\"{o}lder continuous in space and time-Lipschitz continuous. The time-Lipschitz regularity is proven in any dimension $N\geq 1$. Such a regularity is already known in the one-dimensional simplifications, moreover it is the best possible, as was shown in our previous papers.

In this paper, we consider a system of initial boundary value problems for parabolic equations, as a generalized version of the "$ \phi $-$ \eta $-$ \theta $ model" of grain boundary motion, proposed by Kobayashi [16]. The system is a coupled system of: an Allen--Cahn type equation as in (1.1) with a given temperature source; and a phase-field model of grain boundary motion, known as "Kobayashi--Warren--Carter type model". This is the first of two papers which attempt to comprehensively analyse superdeterministic hidden-variables models of Bell correlations. We first give an overview of superdeterminism and discuss various criticisms of it raised in the literature. We argue that the most common criticism, the violation of `free-will', is incorrect. We take up Bell's intuitive criticism that these models are `conspiratorial'. To develop this further, we introduce nonequilibrium extensions of superdeterministic models. We show that the measurement statistics of these extended models depend on the physical system used to determine the measurement settings. This suggests a fine-tuning in order to eliminate this dependence from experimental observation. We also study the signalling properties of these extended models. We show that although they generally violate the formal no-signalling constraints, this violation cannot be equated to an actual signal. We therefore suggest that the so-called no-signalling constraints be more appropriately named the marginal-independence constraints. We discuss the mechanism by which marginal-independence is violated in superdeterministic models. Lastly, we consider a hypothetical scenario where two experimenters use the apparent-signalling of a superdeterministic model to communicate with each other. The singular set of a viscosity solution to a Hamilton-Jacobi equation is known to propagate, from any noncritical singular point, along singular characteristics which are curves satisfying certain differential inclusions. In the literature, different notions of singular characteristics were introduced. However, a general uniqueness criterion for singular characteristics, not restricted to mechanical systems or problems in one space dimension, is missing at the moment. In this paper, we prove that, for a Tonelli Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{R}^2$, two different notions of singular characteristics coincide up to a bi-Lipschitz reparameterization. As a significant consequence, we obtain a uniqueness result for the class of singular characteristics that was introduced by Khanin and Sobolevski in the paper [On dynamics of Lagrangian trajectories for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. In this paper we develop combinatorial techniques for the case of string algebras with the aim to give a characterization of string complexes with infinite minimal projective resolution. These complexes will be called \textit{periodic string complexes}. As a consequence of this characterization, we give two important applications. The first one, is a sufficient condition for a string algebra to have infinite global dimension. In the second one, we exhibit a class of indecomposable objects in the derived category for a special case of string algebras. In this paper we consider interpolation problem connected with series by integer shifts of Gaussians. Known approaches for these problems met numerical difficulties. Due to it another method is considered based on finite-rank approximations by linear systems. The main result for this approach is to establish correctness of the finite-rank linear system under consideration. And the main result of the paper is to prove correctness of the finite-rank linear system approximation. Tree-child networks are a recently-described class of directed acyclic graphs that have risen to prominence in phylogenetics (the study of evolutionary trees and networks). Although these networks have a number of attractive mathematical properties, many combinatorial questions concerning them remain intractable. In this paper, we show that endowing these networks with a biologically relevant ranking structure yields mathematically tractable objects, which we term ranked tree-child networks (RTCNs). We explain how to derive exact and explicit combinatorial results concerning the enumeration and generation of these networks. We also explore probabilistic questions concerning the properties of RTCNs when they are sampled uniformly at random. These questions include the lengths of random walks between the root and leaves (both from the root to the leaves and from a leaf to the root); the distribution of the number of cherries in the network; and sampling RTCNs conditional on displaying a given tree. We also formulate a conjecture regarding the scaling limit of the process that counts the number of lineages in the ancestry of a leaf. The main idea in this paper, namely using ranking as a way to achieve combinatorial tractability, may also extend to other classes of networks.
