A method of detecting atmospheric ducts using a wind profiler radar (WPR) and a radio acoustic sounding system (RASS) is proposed. The method uses the RASS to measure the virtual temperature profile and calculate the Brunt–Väisälä frequency; it also uses the WPR to measure the spectral width of the atmosphere and the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. Then the profile of the atmospheric refractive index gradient and modified refractivity are calculated using virtual temperature, spectral width, and the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. Finally, the height and intensity of the atmospheric duct are calculated to achieve continuous monitoring of the atmospheric duct. To verify the height and intensity of the atmospheric duct, comparison experiments between WPR-RASS and radiosondes were carried out from June 2014 to June 2015 in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. The results show that the profile of modified refractivity by WPR-RASS has exactly the same trend as the radiosondes, the two methods have a good consistency, and the atmospheric duct value from WPR-RASS is in good agreement with that from radiosondes. The sun is known to be a good target for weather radar calibration. In this paper high-resolution raster scans of the sun at high elevations will be used to derive the antenna pattern of weather radar, without being affected by beam propagation effects and reflections close to the earth's surface. It is shown that this pattern matches well to pattern measurements using a point source. Hence, a good estimation of the real antenna pattern can be derived using the sun. Furthermore, formulas to extract undistorted antenna patterns from the sun, even at high-elevation angles, are derived. The signal processing required to achieve high sensitivity for the antenna pattern measurements will be described. Important parts of the antenna pattern-for example, sidelobes-become visible when using long integration times. The polarimetric receiver channel cross-correlation coefficient is proposed as a figure of merit of the cross-polar isolation of the antenna and hence the cross-polar pattern. The results are also compared to point source measurements. This illustrates how an unpolarized signal source like the sun can be used to derive polarimetric variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio wave propagation on low-altitude paths over the ocean above 2 GHz is significantly affected by negative refractivity gradients in the atmospheric surface layer, which form what is often referred to as an evaporation duct (ED). Refractivity from clutter (RFC) is an inversion approach for the estimation of the refractivity profile from radar clutter, and RFC-ED refers to its implementation for the case of evaporation ducts. An approach for fusing RFC-ED output with evaporation duct characterization that is based on ensemble forecasts from a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model is examined here. Three conditions of air-sea temperature difference (ASTD) are examined. Synthetic radar clutter observations are generated using the Advanced Propagation Model. The impacts of ASTD on the evaporation duct refractivity profile, atmospheric parameter inversion, and propagation factor distributions are studied. Relative humidity at a reference height and ASTD are identified as state variables. Probability densities from NWP ensembles, RFC-ED, and joint inversions are compared. It is demonstrated that characterization of the near-surface atmosphere by combining RFC-ED and NWP reduces the estimation uncertainty of ASTD and relative humidity in an evaporation duct, with respect to using either method alone. The main finding by Po-Chedley and Fu was that the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) microwave sounding unit (MSU) product has a bias in its NOAA-9 midtropospheric channel (TMT) warm target factor, which leads to a cold bias in the TMT trend. This reply demonstrates that the central arguments by Christy and Spencer to challenge Po-Chedley and Fu do not stand. This reply establishes that 1) Christy and Spencer found a similar, but insignificant, bias in the UAH target factor because their radiosonde data lack adequate sampling and measurement errors were considered twice; 2) the UAH individual satellite TMT difference between NOAA-9 and NOAA-6 reveals a bias of 0.082 ± 0.011 in the UAH NOAA-9 target factor; 3) comparing the periods before and after NOAA-9 is not an adequate method to draw conclusions about NOAA-9 because of the influence of other satellites; 4) using the Christy and Spencer trend sensitivity value, UAH TMT has a cold bias of 0.035 K decade−1 given a target factor bias of 0.082; 5) similar trends from UAH and Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) for the lower tropospheric temperature product (TLT) do not indicate that the UAH TMT and TLT NOAA-9 target factor is unbiased; and 6) the NOAA-9 warm target temperature signal in UAH TMT indicates a problem with the UAH empirical algorithm to derive the target factor. Mechanisms for the northward propagation (NP) of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) and associated Asian summer monsoon (ASM) are investigated using data from the interim ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim, herein called ERAI) and the superparameterized Community Climate System Model (SP-CCSM). Analyzed mechanisms are 1) destabilization of the lower troposphere by sea surface temperature anomalies, 2) boundary layer moisture advection, and boundary layer convergence associated with 3) SST gradients and 4) barotropic vorticity anomalies. Mechanism indices are regressed onto filtered OLR anomaly time series to study their relationships to the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) and to equatorial Rossby (ER) waves. Northward propagation in ERAI and SP-CCSM is promoted by several mechanisms, but is dominated by boundary layer moisture advection and the barotropic vorticity effect. SST-linked mechanisms are of secondary importance but are nonnegligible. The magnitudes of NP mechanisms vary from the Indian Ocean to the west Pacific Ocean, implying that NP is accomplished by different mechanisms across the study area. SP-CCSM correctly simulates observed NP mechanisms over most of the ASM domain except in the Arabian Sea during the early stages of the monsoon life cycle. Reduced NP in the Arabian Sea arises from weaker-than-observed easterly shear, reducing the effectiveness of the barotropic vorticity mechanism. The ability of SP-CCSM to correctly simulate NP mechanisms in other regions results from the model's ability to simulate reasonable mean wind and moisture fields, a realistic spectrum of variability, and the capability of convection to respond to boundary layer changes induced by large-scale NP mechanisms. It was recently demonstrated that magnitudes of the power-normalized cross-correlation functions of complex amplitudes in neighboring range bins are identical to the fractional contributions made by radar coherent backscatter in the direction of propagation to the total backscattered power in rain and snow. Here, a theoretical framework is presented for calculating the noise associated with estimates of these normalized cross correlations. This noise is identical to the statistical uncertainties in . Radar signals consist of two components: the usual incoherent backscatter often modeled by a Gaussian process and a coherent component modeled for the purposes of these calculations by a phasor C of fixed magnitude that rotates at a constant angular velocity ωωC. Using the representation of the cross-correlation function as the average over the real part of the phasor dot products, it is found that the noise in this function comes from the dot products of C with the incoherent-scatter phasors in each range bin as well as the dot product between the two incoherent phasors. Furthermore, as long as ωωC ≠≠ 0 and the number of statistically independent realizations (samples) k is sufficiently large, the noise is represented well by a normal distribution with mean 0 and with a variance that goes as 1/(2 k). It is then shown that as the magnitude of C increases it acts to suppress the variance of . A formula is derived that gives the standard deviation of as a function of the number of statistically independent samples in the observation and the observed value of . Observations of semidiurnal surface currents in the Kauai Channel, Hawaii, are interpreted in the light of the interaction of internal tides with energetic surface-intensified mesoscale currents. The impacts on internal tide propagation of a cyclone of 55-km diameter and ∼100-m vertical decay scale, as well as of vorticity waves of ∼100-km wavelength and 100–200-m vertical decay scales, are investigated using 3D ray tracing. The Doppler-shifted intrinsic frequency is assumed to satisfy the classic hydrostatic internal wave dispersion relation, using the local buoyancy frequency associated with the background currents through thermal-wind or gradient-wind balance. The M2 internal tide rays with initial horizontal wavelength of 50 km and vertical wavelength of O(1000 m) are propagated from possible generation locations at critical topographic slopes through idealized mesoscale currents approximating the observed currents. Despite the lack of scale separation between the internal waves and background state, which is required by the ray-tracing approximation, the results are qualitatively consistent with observations: the cyclone causes the energy of internal tide rays propagating through its core to increase near the surface (up to a factor of 15), with surfacing time delayed by up to 5 h (∼150° phase lag), and the vorticity waves enhance or reduce the energy near the surface, depending on their phase. These examples illustrate the fact that, even close to their generation location, semidiurnal internal tides can become incoherent with astronomical forcing because of the presence of mesoscale variability. Internal tide energy is mainly affected by refraction through the inhomogeneous buoyancy frequency field, with Doppler shifting playing a secondary but not negligible role, inducing energy transfers between the internal tides and background currents. Furthermore, the vertical wavelength can be reduced by a factor of 6 near the surface in the presence of the cyclone, which, combined with the energy amplification, leads to increased vertical shear within the internal tide rays, with implications for internal wave-induced mixing in the ocean. Dynamical stratosphere–troposphere coupling through a response of baroclinic waves to lower stratospheric flow conditions is investigated from an initial value approach. A series of adiabatic and frictionless nonlinear baroclinic wave life cycles in a midlatitude tropospheric jet with different initial zonal flow conditions in the stratosphere is simulated, using a dry primitive equation model with spherical geometry. When a stratospheric jet, located at various latitudes between 35° and 70°, is removed from the initial conditions, the wavenumber-6 life cycle behavior changes from the well-known LC1 to LC2 evolution, characterized by anticyclonic and cyclonic wave breaking, respectively. Linear theory, in terms of refractive index and the structure of the corresponding fastest-growing normal mode, is found to be unable to explain this stratosphere-induced LC1 to LC2 transition. This implies that altered nonlinear wave–mean flow interactions are important. The most significant stratosphere-induced change that extends into the nonlinear baroclinic growth stage is a region of downward wave propagation in the lower stratosphere associated with positive values of the squared refractive index near 20 km. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the difference between the response of the tropospheric circulation to LC1 and LC2 life cycles closely resembles the meridional and vertical structure of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), with positive (negative) NAO-like anomalies being driven by LC1 (LC2). Thus, a weakened stratospheric jet induces the generation of negative NAO-like anomalies in the troposphere, consistent with the observed stratosphere–NAO connection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On 25 March 2006, a complex frontal system moved across the Sierra–Cascade Mountains and intensified rapidly over the Intermountain West where it produced one of the strongest cold-frontal passages observed in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the past 25 yr. Observational analyses and numerical simulations by the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) Model illustrate that the frontal system propagated discretely across the Sierra–Cascade Mountains and western Nevada. This discrete propagation occurs in a synoptic environment that features a mobile upper-level cyclonic potential vorticity (PV) anomaly that is coupled initially with a landfalling Pacific cyclone and attendant occluded front. The eastward migration of the upper-level cyclonic PV anomaly ultimately encourages the development of a new surface-based cold front ahead of the landfalling occlusion as troughing, confluence, and convergence downstream of the Sierra Nevada intensify preexisting baroclinity over Nevada. Trajectories show that the new cold front represents a boundary between potentially warm air originating over the desert Southwest, some of which has been deflected around the south end of the high sierra, and potentially cool air that has traversed the sierra near and north of Lake Tahoe, some of which has been deflected around the north end of the high sierra. Although diabatic processes contribute to the frontal sharpening, they are not needed for the discrete propagation or rapid cold-frontal development. Forecasters should be vigilant for discrete frontal propagation in similar synoptic situations and recognize that moist convection or differential surface heating can contribute to but are not necessary for rapid Intermountain West frontogenesis. The interaction between vertical Rossby wave propagation and wave breaking is studied in the idealized context of a beta-plane channel model. Considering the problem of propagation through a uniform zonal flow in an exponentially stratified fluid, where linear theory predicts exponential wave growth with height, the question is how wave growth is limited in the nonlinear flow. Using a numerical model, the authors examine the behavior of the flow as the bottom forcing increases through values bound to lead to a breakdown of the linear solution within the computational domain. Focusing on the equilibrium flow obtained for each value of the bottom forcing, an attempt is made to identify the mechanisms involved in limiting wave growth and examine in particular the importance of wave–wave interactions. The authors also examine the case in which forcing is continuously increasing with time so as to enhance effects peculiar to transiency; it does not significantly alter the main results. Wave–mean flow interactions are found to dominate the dynamics even for strong bottom forcing values. Ultimately, it is the modification of the mean flow that is found to limit the vertical penetration of the forced wave, through either increased wave absorption or downward reflection. Linear propagation theory is found to capture the wave structure surprisingly well, even when the total flow is highly deformed. Overall, the numerical results seem to suggest that wave–wave interactions do not have a strong direct effect on the propagating disturbance. Wave–mean flow interactions limit wave growth sufficiently that a strong additional nonlinear enstrophy sink, through downscale cascade, is not necessary. Quantitatively, however, wave–wave interactions, primarily among the lowest wavenumbers, prove important so as to sufficiently accurately determine the basic state and its influence on wave propagation. The influence of ground clutter contamination on the estimation of polarimetric radar parameters, horizontal reflectivity (Zh), differential reflectivity (Zdr), correlation coefficient (ρhν), and differential propagation phase (φdp) was examined. This study aims to derive the critical level of ground clutter contamination for Zh, Zdr, ρhν, and φdp at which ground clutter influence exceeds predefined precision thresholds. Reference data with minimal ground clutter contamination consist of eight precipitation fields measured during three rain events characterized by stratiform and convective precipitation. Data were collected at an elevation angle of 0.8° by the Météo-France operational, polarimetric Doppler C-band weather radar located in Trappes, France, ∼30 km southwest of Paris. Nine different ground clutter signatures, ranging from point targets to more complex signatures typical for mountain ranges or urban obstacles, were added to the precipitation fields. This is done at the level of raw in-phase and quadrature component data in the two polarimetric channels. For each ground clutter signature, 30 simulations were conducted in which the mean reflectivity of ground clutter within the resolution volume varied between being 30 dB higher to 30 dB lower than the mean reflectivity of precipitation. Differences in Zh, Zdr, ρν, and φdp between simulation and reference were shown as a function of ratio between ground clutter and precipitation intensities. As a result of this study, horizontal reflectivity showed the lowest sensitivity to ground clutter contamination. Furthermore, a precision of 1.7 dBZ in Zh is achieved on average when the precipitation and ground clutter intensities are equal. Requiring a precision of 0.2 dB in Zdr and 3° in φdp, the reflectivity of precipitation needs to be on average ∼5.5 and ∼6 dB, respectively, higher compared to the reflectivity of ground clutter. The analysis also indicates that the highest sensitivity to the nine clutter signatures was derived for ρhν. To meet a predefined precision threshold of 0.02, reflectivity of precipitation needs to be ∼13.5 dB higher than the reflectivity of ground clutter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) on the poleward propagation of boreal summer intraseasonal oscillations (BSISOs) is examined using observed datasets. This study finds that coherent (incoherent) poleward propagation of precipitation anomalies from 5°S to 25°N are observed during negative (positive) IOD years. Disorganized poleward propagation of BSISO in the south equatorial Indian Ocean is observed during positive IOD years. The rationale behind such an anomaly in the poleward propagation of BSISO in contrasting IOD years is identified based on the theory of northward-propagating BSISO, which suggests the influential role of air–sea interaction on the genesis and propagation of BSISO. It is found that the mean structure of moisture convergence and meridional specific humidity distribution undergoes radical changes in contrasting IOD years, which in turn influences the meridional propagation of BSISO. Time series of high vertical resolution current meter measurements between 600-m and 1800-m depths on the equator in the Atlantic were obtained at two locations, 10° and 23°W. The measurements have a time span of almost 7 years (2000–06) and provide insights into the temporal scales and vertical structure of variability at intermediate depths. Variability in the zonal velocity component records is dominated by semiannual, annual, and interannual fluctuations. At semiannual and annual periodicities, vertical scales are large, on the order of 2000 stretched meters (sm), and show upward phase propagation. In contrast, interannual variability is associated with small vertical scale flows, called equatorial deep jets (EDJs), presenting downward phase propagation most of the time. Fitting a plane wave to these small vertical-scale flows leads to velocity amplitude, vertical scale, and temporal scale estimates of 8 (normalized) cm s-1, 440 sm, and 4.4 yr. However, this plane wave cannot explain all the variability presenting small vertical scales. Indeed, the data suggest that, along with a seasonal cycle of much larger vertical scale, different features with EDJ vertical scale coexist, with the possibility of a semipermanent eastward jet at around 1500 sm. Variability in the meridional velocity component is dominated by intraseasonal fluctuations. In addition, at 23°W, the meridional component shows low-frequency flows that may be due to the interaction of zonal fluctuations with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between local convection, vertically propagating Kelvin waves, and tropical tropopause height variability is examined. This study utilizes both simulations of a global primitive-equation model and global observational datasets. Regression analysis with the data shows that convection over the western tropical Pacific is followed by warming in the upper troposphere (UT) and cooling in lower stratosphere (LS) over most longitudes, which results in a lifting of the tropical tropopause. The model results reveal that these UT–LS temperature anomalies are closely associated with vertically propagating Kelvin waves, indicating that these Kelvin waves drive tropical tropopause undulations at intraseasonal time scales. The model simulations further show that regardless of the longitudinal position of the imposed heating, the UT–LS Kelvin wave reaches its maximum amplitude over the western Pacific. This result, together with an analysis based on wave action conservation, is used to contend that the Kelvin wave amplification over the western Pacific should be attributed to the zonal variation of background zonal wind field, rather than to the proximity of the heating. The wave action conservation law is also used to offer an explanation as to why the vertically propagating Kelvin waves play the central role in driving tropical tropopause height undulations. The zonal and vertical modulation of the Kelvin waves by the background flow may help explain the origin of the very cold air over the western tropical Pacific, which is known to cause freeze-drying of tropospheric air en route to the stratosphere. New algorithms for rain attenuation correction of reflectivity factor and differential reflectivity are presented. Following the methodology suggested for the first time by Gorgucci et al., the new algorithms are developed based on the self-consistency principle, describing the interrelation between polarimetric measurements along the rain medium. There is an increasing interest in X-band radar systems, owing to the early success of the attenuation-correction procedures as well as the initiative of the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere to deploy X-band radars in a networked fashion. In this paper, self-consistent algorithms for correcting attenuation and differential attenuation are developed. The performance of the algorithms for application to X-band dual-polarization radars is evaluated extensively. The evaluation is conducted based on X-band dual-polarization observations generated from S-band radar measurements. Evaluation of the new self-consistency algorithms shows significant improvement in performance compared to the current class of algorithms. In the case that reflectivity and differential reflectivity are calibrated between ±1 and ±0.2 dB, respectively, the new algorithms can estimate both attenuation and differential attenuation with less than 10% bias and 15% random error. In addition, the attenuation-corrected reflectivity and differential reflectivity are within 1–0.2 dB 96% and 99% of the time, respectively, demonstrating the good performance. Rossby wave propagation theory predicts that Rossby waves in a tropical easterly flow cannot escape from the Tropics to the extratropics. Here the authors show that a southerly flow component in the basic state (a southerly conveyor) may transfer a Rossby wave source northward; thus, a forcing embedded in the deep tropical easterlies may excite a Rossby wave response in the extratropical westerlies. It is shown that the southerly conveyor determines the location of the effective Rossby wave source and that the extratropical response is relatively insensitive to the location of the tropical forcing, provided that the tropical response can reach the southerly conveyor. A stronger southerly flow favors a stronger extratropical response, and the spatial structure of the extratropical response is determined by the extratropical westerly basic flows. Error propagation analysis is applied to evaluate the effects of correcting horizontal and differential attenuation on the precision of the estimates of reflectivity and differential reflectivity. The analysis shows that the loss of precision on reflectivity and differential reflectivity is of the same order of magnitude as the propagation power losses added, notwithstanding how horizontal and differential attenuation are accounted for. Polarimetric weather radar simultaneously transmitting and receiving horizontally and vertically polarized waves is then considered. Differential propagation phase is used as the predictor variable for attenuation. Calculations for three microwave frequencies corresponding to S, C, and X bands show that the losses in accuracy and in precision of the estimates of reflectivity are about 16 and 68 times worse at C and X bands, respectively, than at S band.
