Conventionally, Micro Rain Radars (MRRs) have been used as a tool to calibrate reflectivity from weather radars, estimate the relation between rainfall rate and reflectivity, and study microphysical processes in precipitation. However, limited attention has been given to the reliability of the retrieved drop size distributions (DSDs) from MRRs. This study sheds more light on this aspect by examining the sensitivity of retrieved DSDs to the assumptions made to map Doppler spectra into size distributions, and investigates the capability of an MRR to assess polarimetric observations from operational weather radars. For that, an MRR was installed near the Cabauw observatory in the Netherlands, between the International Research Center for Telecommunications and Radar (IRCTR) Drizzle Radar (IDRA) X-band radar and the Herwijnen operational C-band radar. The measurements of the MRR from November 2018 to February 2019 were used to retrieve DSDs and simulate horizontal reflectivity Ze, differential reflectivity ZDR, and specific differential phase KDP in rain. Attention is given to the impact of aliased spectra and right-hand-side truncation on the simulation of polarimetric variables. From a quantitative assessment, the correlations of Ze and ZDR between theMRRand Herwijnen radar were 0.93 and 0.70, respectively, while those between the MRR and IDRA were 0.91 and 0.69. However, Ze and ZDR from the Herwijnen radar showed slight biases of 1.07 and 0.25 dB. For IDRA, the corresponding biases were 2.67 and20.93 dB. Our results show that MRR measurements are advantageous to inspect the calibration of scanning radars and validate polarimetric estimates in rain, provided that the DSDs are correctly retrieved and controlled for quality assurance. The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission core satellite provides the new-generation global observation of rain since 2014. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the suitability and limitation of GPM-DPR level-2 products over China. The DPR rain rate products are compared with rain gauge data during the summers of 5 years (2014-18). The ground observation network is composed of more than 50 000 rain gauges. The DPR precipitation products for all scans (DPR_NS, DPR_MS, and DPR_HS) generally underestimate rain rates. However, DPR_MS agrees better with gauge estimates thanDPR_NS and DPR_HS, yielding the lowest mean error, systematic deviation, and highest Pearson correlation coefficient. In addition, all three swath types show obvious overestimation over gauge estimates between 0.5 and 1mmh-1 and underestimation when gauge estimates are larger than 1mmh-1. The DPR_HS and DPR_MS agree better with gauge estimates below and above 2.5mmh-1, respectively. A deeper investigation was carried out to analyze the variation of DPR_MS's performance with respect to terrains over China. An obvious underestimation, relative to gauge estimates, occurs in Tibetan Plateau while a slight overestimation occurs in the North China Plain. When directly assimilating radar data within a variational framework using hydrometeor mixing ratios (q) as control variables (CVq), the gradient of the cost function becomes extremely large when background mixing ratio is close to zero. This significantly slows down minimization convergence and makes the assimilation of radial velocity and other observations ineffective because of the dominance of the reflectivity observation term in the cost function gradient. Using logarithmic hydrometeor mixing ratios as control variables (CV logq) can alleviate the problem but the high nonlinearity of logarithmic transformation can introduce spurious analysis increments into mixing ratios. In this study, power transform of hydrometeors is proposed to form new control variables (CVpq) where the nonlinearity of transformation can be adjusted by a tuning exponent or power parameter p. The performance of assimilating radar data using CVpq is compared with those using CVq and CVlogq for the analyses and forecasts of five convective storm cases from the spring of 2017. Results show that CVpq with p 5 0.4 (CVpq0.4) gives the best reflectivity forecasts in terms of root-mean-square error and equitable threat score. Furthermore, CVpq0.4 has faster convergence of cost function minimization than CVq and produces less spurious analysis increment than CVlogq. Compared to CVq and CVlogq, CVpq0.4 has better skills of 0-3-h composite reflectivity forecasts, and the updraft helicity tracks for the 16 May 2017 Texas and Oklahoma tornado outbreak case are more consistent with observations when using CVpq0.4. Techniques to mitigate analysis errors arising from the nonsimultaneity of data collections typically use advection-correction procedures based on the hypothesis (frozen turbulence) that the analyzed field can be represented as a pattern of unchanging form in horizontal translation. It is more difficult to advection correct the radial velocity than the reflectivity because even if the vector velocity field satisfies this hypothesis, its radial component does not—but that component does satisfy a second-derivative condition. We treat the advection correction of the radial velocity (υr) as a variational problem in which errors in that second-derivative condition are minimized subject to smoothness constraints on spatially variable pattern-translation components (U, V). The Euler–Lagrange equations are derived, and an iterative trajectory-based solution is developed in which U, V, and υr are analyzed together. The analysis code is first verified using analytical data, and then tested using Atmospheric Imaging Radar (AIR) data from a band of heavy rainfall on 4 September 2018 near El Reno, Oklahoma, and a decaying tornado on 27 May 2015 near Canadian, Texas. In both cases, the analyzed υr field has smaller root-mean-square errors and larger correlation coefficients than in analyses based on persistence, linear time interpolation, or advection correction using constant U and V. As some experimentation is needed to obtain appropriate parameter values, the procedure is more suitable for non-real-time applications than use in an operational setting. In particular, the degree of spatial variability in U and V, and the associated errors in the analyzed υr field are strongly dependent on a smoothness parameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-resolution datasets offer the potential to improve our understanding of spatial and temporal precipitation patterns and storm structures. The goal of this study is to evaluate the similarities and differences of object-based storm characteristics as observed using space- or land-based sensors. The Method of Object-based Diagnostic Evaluation (MODE) Time Domain (MTD) is used to identify and track storm objects in two high-resolution merged datasets: the Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) final product V06B and gauge-corrected ground-radar-based Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) quantitative precipitation estimations. Characteristics associated with landfalling hurricanes were also examined as a separate category of storm. The results reveal that IMERG and MRMS agree reasonably well across many object-based storm characteristics. However, there are some discrepancies that are statistically significant. MRMS storms are more concentrated, with smaller areas and higher peak intensities, which implies higher flash flood risks associated with the storms. On the other hand, IMERG storms can travel longer distances with a higher volume of precipitation, which implies higher risk of riverine flooding. Agreement between the datasets is higher for faster-moving hurricanes in terms of the averaged intensity. Finally, MRMS indicates a higher average precipitation intensity during the hurricane's lifetime. However, in non-hurricanes, the opposite result was observed. This is likely related to MRMS having higher resolution; monitoring the hurricanes from many viewing angles, leading to different signal saturation properties compared to IMERG; and/or the dominance of droplet aggregation effects over evaporation effects at lower altitudes. Partial beam blockage (PBB) correction is an indispensable step in weather radar data quality control and subsequent quantitative applications, such as precipitation estimation, especially in urban and/or complex terrain environments. This paper developed a novel PBB correction procedure based on the improved ZPHI method for attenuation correction and regional specific differential propagation phase (KDP)–reflectivity (ZH) relationship derived from in situ raindrop size distribution (DSD) measurements. The practical performance of this PBB correction technique was evaluated through comparing the spatial continuity of reflectivity measurements, the consistency between radar-measured and DSD-derived KDP and ZH relationships, as well as rainfall estimates based on R(ZH) and R(KDP). The results showed that through incorporating attenuation and PBB corrections (i) the spatial continuity of ZH measurements can effectively be enhanced; (ii) the distribution of radar-measured KDP versus ZH is more consistent with the DSD-derived KDP versus ZH; (iii) the measured ZH from a C-band radar in the PBB-affected area becomes more consistent with collocated S-band measurements, particularly in the rainstorm center area where ZH is larger than 30 dBZ; and (iv) rainfall estimates based on R(ZH) in the PBB-affected area are incrementally improved with better spatial continuity and the performance tends to be more comparable with R(KDP). Polarimetric radar observations from the NEXRAD WSR-88D operational radar network in the contiguous United States, routinely available since 2013, are used to reveal three prominent microphysical signatures in landfalling tropical cyclones: 1) hydrometeor size sorting within the eyewall convection, 2) vertical displacement of the melting layer within the inner core, and 3) dendritic growth layers within stratiform regions of the inner core. Size sorting signatures within eyewall convection are observed with greater frequency and prominence in more intense hurricanes, and are observed predominantly within the deep-layer environmental wind shear vector-relative quadrants that harbor the greatest frequency of deep convection (i.e., downshear and left-of-shear). Melting-layer displacements are shown that exceed 1 km in altitude compared to melting-layer altitudes in outer rainbands and are complemented by analyses of archived dropsonde data. Dendritic growth and attendant snow aggregation signatures in the inner core are found to occur more often when echo-top altitudes are low (≤10 km MSL), nearer the −15°C isotherm commonly associated with dendritic growth. These signatures, uniquely observed by polarimetric radar, provide greater insight into the physical structure and thermodynamic characteristics of tropical cyclones, which are important for improving rainfall estimation and the representation of tropical cyclones in numerical models. In this study, a hybrid En3DVar data assimilation (DA) scheme is compared with 3DVar, EnKF, and pure En3DVar for the assimilation of radar data in a real tornadic storm case. Results using hydrometeor mixing ratios (CVq) or logarithmic mixing ratios (CVlogq) as the control variables are compared in the variational DA framework. To address the lack of radial velocity impact issues when using CVq, a procedure that assimilates reflectivity and radial velocity data in two separate analysis passes is adopted. Comparisons are made in terms of the root-mean-square innovations (RMSIs) as well as the intensity and structure of the analyzed and forecast storms. For pure En3DVar that uses 100% ensemble covariance, CVlogq and CVq have similar RMSIs in the velocity analyses, but errors grow faster during forecasts when using CVlogq. Introducing static background error covariance B at 5% in hybrid En3DVar (with CVlogq) significantly reduces the forecast error growth. Pure En3DVar produces more intense reflectivity analyses than EnKF that more closely match the observations. Hybrid En3DVar with 50% B outperforms other weights in terms of the RMSIs and forecasts of updraft helicity and is thus used in the final comparison with 3DVar and EnKF. The hybrid En3DVar is found to outperform EnKF in better capturing the intensity and structure of the analyzed and forecast storms and outperform 3DVAR in better capturing the intensity and evolution of the rotating updraft. Super resolution involves synthetically increasing the resolution of gridded data beyond their native resolution. Typically, this is done using interpolation schemes, which estimate sub-grid-scale values from neighboring data, and perform the same operation everywhere regardless of the large-scale context, or by requiring a network of radars with overlapping fields of view. Recently, significant progress has been made in single-image super resolution using convolutional neural networks. Conceptually, a neural network may be able to learn relations between large-scale precipitation features and the associated sub-pixel-scale variability and outperform interpolation schemes. Here, we use a deep convolutional neural network to artificially enhance the resolution of NEXRAD PPI scans. The model is trained on 6 months of reflectivity observations from the Langley Hill, Washington, radar (KLGX), and we find that it substantially outperforms common interpolation schemes for 4× and 8× resolution increases based on several objective error and perceptual quality metrics. This paper examines nowcasts of precipitation from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRRv2) model from the summer of 2017 along the Colorado Front Range. It was found that model nowcasts (2 h or less) of precipitation amount were less skillful than extrapolation of the KFTG WSR-88-D data at a spatial scale of 120 km. It was also found that local-scale (mesoscale) influences on rainfall intensity and amount have a much greater impact on rainfall intensity than large-scale (synoptic) influences. Thus, large-scale trends are not useful for modifying extrapolation nowcasts on the local scale. Errors in the HRRR nowcasts are attributed to an inability of the model and data assimilation to resolve convergence along outflow boundaries and other terrain-influenced mesogamma-scale flows that contribute to storm formation and evolution. While the HRRRv2 1-h nowcasts were strongly correlated with observed precipitation events, the nowcast precipitation amounts were in error by more than a factor of 2 about 50% of the time, with half of the cases being overestimates and half being underestimates. A large fraction of the HRRRv2 overestimates were associated with stratiform rain events. It is speculated that this was a result of misinterpretation of the radar bright band as more intense precipitation aloft by the data assimilation scheme. A large fraction of the HRRRv2 underestimates occurred when the data assimilation and model were unable to fully resolve the low-level convergence along small-scale, narrow boundaries that led to new storm initiation and/or storm growth. An improved understanding of common differences between tornadic and nontornadic supercells is sought using a large set of observations from the operational NEXRAD WSR-88D polarimetric radar network in the contiguous United States. In particular, data from 478 nontornadic and 294 tornadic supercells during a 7-yr period (2011–17) are used to produce probability-matched composite means of microphysical and kinematic variables. Means, which are centered on echo-top maxima and in a horizontal coordinate system rotated such that storm motion points in the positive x dimension, are created in altitude relative to ground level at times of peak echo-top altitude and peak midlevel rotation for nontornadic supercells and times at and prior to the first tornado in tornadic supercells. Robust differences between supercell types are found, with consistent characteristics at and preceding tornadogenesis in tornadic storms. In particular, the mesocyclone is found to be vertically aligned in tornadic supercells and misaligned in nontornadic supercells. Microphysical differences found include a low-level radar reflectivity hook echo aligned with and ~10 km right of storm center in tornadic supercells and displaced 5–10 km down-motion in nontornadic supercells, a low-to-midlevel differential radar reflectivity dipole that is oriented more parallel to storm motion in tornadic supercells and more perpendicular in nontornadic supercells, and a separation between enhanced differential radar reflectivity and specific differential phase (with unique displacement-relative correlation coefficient reductions) at low levels that is more perpendicular to storm motion in tornadic supercells and more parallel in nontornadic supercells. An assumption related to clouds is one of uncertain factors in precipitation retrievals by the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory. While an attenuation due to cloud ice is negligibly small for Ku and Ka bands, attenuation by cloud liquid water is larger in the Ka band and estimating precipitation intensity with high accuracy from Ka-band observations can require developing a method to estimate the attenuation due to cloud liquid water content (CLWC). This paper describes a CLWC database used in the DPR level-2 algorithm for the GPM V06A product. In the algorithm, the CLWC value is assumed using the database with inputs of precipitation-related variables, temperature, and geolocation information. A calculation of the database was made using the 3.5-km-mesh global atmospheric simulation derived from the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM) global cloud-system-resolving model. Impacts of current CLWC assumptions for surface precipitation estimates were evaluated by comparisons of precipitation retrieval results between default values and 0 mg m−3 of the CLWC. The impacts were quantified by the normalized mean absolute difference (NMAD) and the NMAD values showed 2.3% for the Ku, 9.9% for the Ka, and 6.5% for the dual-frequency algorithms in global averages, while they were larger in the tropics than in high latitudes. Effects of the precipitation estimates from the CLWC assumption were examined further in terms of retrieval processes affected by the CLWC assumption. High-resolution boundary layer water vapor profile observations are essential for understanding the interplay between shallow convection, cloudiness, and climate in the trade wind atmosphere. As current observation techniques can be limited by low spatial or temporal resolution, the synergistic benefit of combining ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) and dual-frequency radar is investigated by analyzing the retrieval information content and uncertainty. Synthetic MWR brightness temperatures, as well as simulated dual-wavelength ratios of two radar frequencies are generated for a combination of Ka and W band (KaW), as well as differential absorption radar (DAR) G-band frequencies (167 and 174.8 GHz, G2). The synergy analysis is based on an optimal estimation scheme by varying the configuration of the observation vector. Combining MWR and KaW only marginally increases the retrieval information content. The synergy of MWR with G2 radar is more beneficial due to increasing degrees of freedom (4.5), decreasing retrieval errors, and a more realistic retrieved profile within the cloud layer. The information and profile below and within the cloud is driven by the radar observations, whereas the synergistic benefit is largest above the cloud layer, where information content is enhanced compared to an MWR-only or DAR-only setup. For full synergistic benefits, however, G-band radar sensitivities need to allow full-cloud profiling; in this case, the results suggest that a combined retrieval of MWR and G-band DAR can help close the observational gap of current techniques. This paper describes a technique for estimating the liquid water content (LWC) and a characteristic particle diameter in stratocumulus clouds using radar and lidar observations. The uncertainty in LWC estimate from radar and lidar measurements is significantly reduced once the characteristic particle diameter is known. The technique is independent of the drop size distribution. It is applicable for a broad range of W-band reflectivity Z between −30 and 0 dBZ and all values of lidar backscatter β observations. No partitioning of cloud or drizzle is required on the basis of an arbitrary threshold of Z as in prior studies. A method for estimating droplet diameter and LWC was derived from the electromagnetic simulations of radar and lidar observations. In situ stratocumulus cloud and drizzle probe spectra were input to the electromagnetic simulation. The retrieved droplet diameter and LWC were validated using in situ measurements from the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The retrieval method was applied to radar and lidar measurements from the northeastern Pacific. Uncertainty in the retrieved droplet diameter and LWC that are due to the measurement errors in radar and lidar backscatter measurements are 7% and 14%, respectively. A new dual-polarization (DP) radar synthetic quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) product was developed using a combination of specific attenuation A, specific differential phase KDP, and reflectivity Z to calculate the precipitation rate R. Specific attenuation has advantages of being insensitive to systematic biases in Z and differential reflectivity ZDR due to partial beam blockage, attenuation, and calibration while more linearly related to R than other radar variables. However, the R(A) relationship is not applicable in areas containing ice. Therefore, the new DP QPE applies R(A) in areas where radar is observing pure rain, R(KDP) in regions potentially containing hail, and R(Z) elsewhere. Further, an evaporation correction was applied to minimize false light precipitation related to virga. The new DP QPE was evaluated in real time over the conterminous United States and showed significant improvements over previous radarQPE techniques that were based solely on R(Z) relationships. The improvements included reduced dry biases in heavy to extreme precipitation during the warm season. The new DP QPE also reduced errors and spatial discontinuities in regions impacted by partial beam blockage. Further, the new DP QPE reduced wet bias for scattered light precipitation in the southwest and north central United States where there is significant boundary layer evaporation. Observations of the air vertical velocities (wair) in supercell updrafts are presented, including uncertainty estimates, from radiosonde GPS measurements in two supercells. These in situ observations were collected during the Colorado State University Convective Cloud Outflows and Updrafts Experiment (C³LOUD-Ex) in moderately unstable environments in Colorado and Wyoming. Based on the radiosonde accelerations, instances when the radiosonde balloon likely bursts within the updraft are determined, and adjustments are made to account for the subsequent reduction in radiosonde buoyancy. Before and after these adjustments, the maximum estimated wair values are 36.2 and 49.9ms-1, respectively. Radar data are used to contextualize the in situ observations and suggest that most of the radiosonde observations were located several kilometers away from the most intense vertical motions. Therefore, the radiosonde-based wair values presented likely underestimate the maximum values within these storms due to these sampling biases, as well as the impacts from hydrometeors, which are not accounted for. When possible, radiosonde-based wair values were compared to estimates from dual-Doppler methods and from parcel theory. When the radiosondes observed their highest wair values, dual-Doppler methods generally produced 15–20ms-1 lower wair for the same location, which could be related to the differences in the observing systems’ resolutions. In situ observations within supercell updrafts, which have been limited in recent decades, can be used to improve our understanding and modeling of storm dynamics. Fully polarimetric scanning and vertically pointing Doppler spectral data from the state-of-the-art Stony Brook University Ka-band Scanning Polarimetric Radar (KASPR) are analyzed for a long-duration case of ice pellets over central Long Island in New York from 12 February 2019. Throughout the period of ice pellets, a classic refreezing signature was present, consisting of a secondary enhancement of differential reflectivityZDR beneath the melting layer within a region of decreasing reflectivity factor at horizontal polarization ZH and reduced copolar correlation coefficient rhv. The KASPR radar data allow for evaluation of previously proposed hypotheses to explain the refreezing signature. It is found that, upon entering a layer of locally generated columnar ice crystals and undergoing contact nucleation, smaller raindrops preferentially refreeze into ice pellets prior to the complete freezing of larger drops. Refreezing particles exhibit deformations in shape during freezing, leading to reduced rhv, reduced co-to-cross-polar correlation coefficient rxh, and enhanced linear depolarization ratio, but these shape changes do not explain the ZDR signature. The presence of columnar ice crystals, though apparently crucial for instigating the refreezing process, does not contribute enough backscattered power to affect the ZDR signature, either. Tornadic supercells moved across parts of Oklahoma on the afternoon and evening of 9 May 2016. One such supercell, while producing a long-lived tornado, was observed by nearby WSR-88D radars to contain a strong anticyclonic velocity couplet on the lowest elevation angle. This couplet was located in a very atypical position relative to the ongoing cyclonic tornado and to the supercell’s updraft. A storm survey team identified damage near where this couplet occurred, and, in the absence of evidence refuting otherwise, the damage was thought to have been produced by an anticyclonic tornado. However, such a tornado was not seen in near-ground, high-resolution radar data from a much closer, rapid-scan, mobile radar. Rather, an elongated velocity couplet was observed only at higher elevation angles at altitudes similar to those at which the WSR-88D radars observed the strong couplet. This paper examines observations from two WSR-88D radars and a mobile radar from which it is argued that the anticyclonic couplet (and a similar one; 10 min later)were actually quasi-horizontal vortices centered ;1–1.5 km AGL. The benefits of having data from a radar much closer to the convective storm being sampled (e.g., better spatial resolution and near-ground data coverage) and providing more rapid volume updates are readily apparent. An analysis of these additional radar data provides strong, but not irrefutable, evidence that the anticyclonic tornado that may be inferred from WSR-88D data did not exist; consequently, upon discussions with the National Weather Service, it was not included in Storm Data. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The official nationwide radar network in the United States is capable of detecting some tornadoes, but this capability generally decreases with increasing distance from the radar. In this study, we examined two peculiar radar signatures observed in a tornado-producing thunderstorm in Oklahoma in May 2016. These signatures looked similar to those seen in anticyclonic (i.e., clockwise-rotating in the Northern Hemisphere) tornadoes, but the location within the storm would have been highly unusual for a tornado. Data from a rapid-scan mobile radar closer to the storm revealed that the signatures were not from anticyclonic tornadoes but, rather, may have been quasi-horizontal vortices centered;1 km above ground. Anovel way to process polarimetric radar data collected via plan position indicator (PPI) scans and display those data in a time-height format is introduced. The columnar vertical profile (CVP) methodology uses radar data collected via multiple elevation scans, limited to data within a set region in range and azimuth relative to the radar, to create vertical profiles of polarimetric radar data representative of that limited region in space. This technique is compared to others existing in the literature, and various applications are discussed. Polarimetric ice microphysical retrievals are performed on CVPs created within the stratiform rain region of two mesoscale convective systems sampled during two field campaigns, where CVPs follow the track of research aircraft. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) operates two dual-polarization C-band weather radars in simultaneous transmission and reception (STAR; i.e., horizontally and vertically polarized pulses are transmitted simultaneously) mode, providing 2D radar rainfall products. Despite the application of Doppler and speckle filtering, remaining nonmeteorological echoes (especially sea clutter) mainly due to anomalous propagation still pose a problem. This calls for additional filtering algorithms, which can be realized by means of polarimetry. Here we explore the effectiveness of the open-source wradlib fuzzy echo classification and clutter identification based on polarimetric moments. Based on our study, this has recently been extended with the depolarization ratio and clutter phase alignment as new decision variables. Optimal values for weights of the different membership functions and threshold are determined employing a 4-h calibration dataset from one radar. The method is applied to a full year of volumetric data from the two radars in the Dutch temperate climate. The verification focuses on the presence of remaining nonmeteorological echoes by mapping the number of exceedances of radar reflectivity factors for given thresholds. Moreover, accumulated rainfall maps are obtained to detect unrealistically large rainfall depths. The results are compared to those for which no further filtering has been applied. Verification against rain gauge data reveals that only a little precipitation is removed. Because the fuzzy logic algorithm removes many nonmeteorological echoes, the practice to composite data from both radars in logarithmic space to hide these echoes is abandoned and replaced by linearly averaging reflectivities. The Multi-Radar-Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system was transitioned into operations at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction in the fall of 2014. It provides high-quality and high-resolution severe weather and precipitation products for meteorology, hydrology, and aviation applications. Among processing modules, the radar data quality control (QC) plays a critical role in effectively identifying and removing various nonhydrometeor radar echoes for accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). Since its initial implementation in 2014, the radar QC has undergone continuous refinements and enhancements to ensure its robust performance across seasons and all regions in the continental United States and southern Canada. These updates include 1) improved melting-layer delineation, 2) clearance of wind farm contamination, 3) mitigation of corrupt data impacts due to hardware issues, 4) mitigation of sun spikes, and 5) mitigation of residual ground/lake/sea clutter due to sidelobe effects and anomalous propagation. Sampling error stems from the use of ensemble-based data assimilation (EDA) with a limited ensemble size and can result in spurious background error covariances, leading to false analysis corrections. The WRF-LETKF radar assimilation system (WLRAS) is performed separately with 256 and 40 members to investigate the characteristics of convective-scale sampling errors in the EDA and its impact on precipitation prediction based on a heavy rainfall event on 16 June 2008. The results suggest that the sampling errors for this event are sensitive to the relationships between the simulated observations and model variables, the intensity of reflectivity, and how the prevailing wind projects to the radial wind in the areas that the radar cannot resolve U or V wind. The sampling errors lead to an underprediction of heavy rainfall when the horizontal localization radius is inadequately large, but this can be mitigated when a more accurate moisture condition is provided. In addition, being able to use a larger vertical localization plays an important role in providing necessary adjustments for representing the vertical thermodynamical structure of convection, which further improves precipitation prediction. A strategy mitigating the impact of sampling errors associated with the limitation of radial wind measurement by inflating the observation error over sensitive areas can bring benefits to precipitation prediction. The impacts of the differential phase of incident radar waves (ψi) on measured differential reflectivity (ZDR), differential phase, and correlation coefficient from ice cloud particles are presented for radars employing simultaneous transmission and reception of orthogonally polarized waves (SHV radar design). The maximal values of ZDR and the differential phase upon scattering (δ) from ice particles are obtained as functions of ψi. It is shown that SHV δ from ice particles can exceed a dozen degrees whereas the intrinsic δ is of a few hundredths of a degree. In melting layers, the δ values from particles obeying the Rayleigh scattering law can be several degrees depending on ψi so that, to explain such δ values, an assumption of resonance scattering is not necessary. The phase δ affects the estimation of specific differential phase (KDP) in icy media and, therefore, the phase δ should be measured. The radar differential phase upon transmission ψt is a part of ψi and, therefore, affects the δ values. Two Ocean State Monitoring and Analyzing Radar (OSMAR071) (7.8 MHz) high-frequency (HF) radars and four moored ADCPs were operated concurrently in the southwestern Taiwan Strait during January-March 2013. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons of surface currents were conducted between the HF radars and the ADCPs. Except for a location probably affected by shallow water and sand waves on the Taiwan Banks, the HF-radar-derived radial currents (radials) showed good agreement with the ADCP measured results (correlation coefficient: 0.89-0.98; rms difference: 0.07-0.13 m s-1). To provide further insight into the geophysical processes involved, the performance of the HF-radar-derived radials was further evaluated under different sea states (sea states: 2-6). It was found that both the data returns of the radar-derived radials and the differences between the radar-derived radials and the ADCP-derived radials varied with sea state. The HF radar performed best at sea state 4 in terms of data returns. The spatial coverage increased rapidly as the waves increased from sea state 2 to 4. However, it decreased slowly from sea state 4 to 6. Second, the radial differences were relatively high under lower sea states (2 and 3) at the location where the best agreement was obtained between the radar and ADCP radials, whereas the differences increased as the sea states increased at the other three locations. Thunderstorms that produce hail accumulations at the surface can impact residents by obstructing roadways, closing airports, and causing localized flooding from hail-clogged drainages. These storms have recently gained an increased interest within the scientific community. However, differences that are observable in real time between these storms and storms that produce nonimpactful hail accumulations have yet to be documented. Similarly, the characteristics within a single storm that are useful to quantify or predict hail accumulations are not fully understood. This study uses lightning and dual-polarization radar data to characterize hail accumulations from three storms that occurred on the same day along the Colorado–Wyoming Front Range. Each storm’s characteristics are verified against radar-derived hail accumulation maps and in situ observations. The storms differed in maximum accumulation, either producing 22 cm, 7 cm, or no accumulation. The magnitude of surface hail accumulations is found to be dependent on a combination of in-cloud hail production, storm translation speed, and hailstone melting. The optimal combination for substantial hail accumulations is enhanced in-cloud hail production, slow storm speed, and limited hailstone melting. However, during periods of similar in-cloud hail production, lesser accumulations are derived when storm speed and/or hailstone melting, identified by radar presentation, is sufficiently large. Specification of suitable initial conditions to accurately forecast high-impact weather events associated with intense thunderstorms still poses a significant challenge for convective-scale forecasting. Radar data assimilation has been showing encouraging results to produce an accurate estimate of the state of the atmosphere at the mesoscale, as it combines high-spatiotemporal-resolution observations with convection-permitting numerical weather prediction models. However, many open questions remain regarding the configuration of state-of-the-art data assimilation systems at the mesoscale and their potential impact upon short-range weather forecasts. In this work, several observing system simulation experiments of a mesoscale convective system were performed to assess the sensitivity of the local ensemble transform Kalman filter to both relaxation-to-prior spread (RTPS) inflation and horizontal localization of the error covariance matrix. Realistic large-scale forcing and model errors have been taken into account in the simulation of reflectivity and Doppler velocity observations. Overall, the most accurate analyses in terms of RMSE were produced with a relatively small horizontal localization cutoff radius (;3.6–7.3 km) and large RTPS inflation parameter (;0.9–0.95). Additionally, the impact of horizontal localization on short-range ensemble forecast was larger compared to inflation, almost doubling the lead times up to which the effect of using a more accurate state to initialize the forecast persisted. Weather radar provides real-time, spatially distributed precipitation estimates, whereas traditional gauge data are restricted in space. The use of radar quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) as an input of hydrological models for hydrometeorological applications has increased with the development of weather radar worldwide. New dual-polarization technology and algorithms are showing improvements to radar QPEs. This study evaluates radar QPEs from C-band radar at King City, Canada (WKR), and NEXRAD S-band radar at Buffalo, New York (KBUF), to verify the reliability and accuracy for operational use in the Humber River (semiurban) and Don River (urban) watersheds in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Canada. Twenty rainfall events that occurred from 2011 to 2017 were determined from hourly gauge measurements and compared with nine radar QPEs. Rain rates were estimated with different algorithms using three dualpolarized reflectivity values: horizontal reflectivity Z, differential reflectivity ZDR, and specific differential phase KDP. The correlation coefficient, bias, detection, and root-mean-square error were calculated and averaged over all events for each gauge station to show the spatial distribution and in a similar pattern to represent the variation by the event. The quality of the results in terms of accuracy and reliability indicates that the radar QPEs from KBUF S-band and WKR C-band multiparameter rain rate estimators can be effectively used as precipitation forcing of hydrological models for hydrometeorological applications. The high spatiotemporal resolution, long-term data archive, and good percent detection of radar QPEs can facilitate hydrometeorological applications by providing a continuous time series for hydrological models. On 10 November 2018, during the RELAMPAGO field campaign in Argentina, South America, a thunderstorm with supercell characteristics was observed by an array of mobile observing instruments, including three Doppler on Wheels radars. In contrast to the archetypal supercell described in the Glossary of Meteorology, the updraft rotation in this storm was rather short lived (;25 min), causing some initial doubt as to whether this indeed was a supercell. However, retrieved 3D winds from dual-Doppler radar scans were used to document a high spatial correspondence between midlevel vertical velocity and vertical vorticity in this storm, thus providing evidence to support the supercell categorization. Additional data collected within the RELAMPAGO domain revealed other storms with this behavior, which appears to be attributable in part to effects of the local terrain. Specifically, the IOP4 supercell and other short-duration supercell cases presented had storm motions that were nearly perpendicular to the long axis of the Sierras de Córdoba Mountains; a long-duration supercell case, on the other hand, had a storm motion nearly parallel to these mountains. Sounding observations as well as model simulations indicate that a mountain-perpendicular storm motion results in a relatively short storm residence time within the narrow zone of terrain-enhanced vertical wind shear. Such a motion and short residence time would limit the upward tilting, by the left-moving supercell updraft, of the storm-relative, antistreamwise horizontal vorticity associated with anabatic flow near complex terrain. The sensitivity of microwave brightness temperatures (TBs) to hydrometeors at frequencies between 89 and 190 GHz is investigated by comparing Fengyun-3C(FY-3C)MicrowaveHumidity Sounder-2 (MWHS-2) measurements with radar reflectivity profiles and retrieved products from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission's Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). Scattering-induced TB depressions (DTBs), calculated by subtracting simulated cloud-free TBs from bias-corrected observed TBs for each channel, are compared withDPR-retrieved hydrometeor water path (HWP) and vertically integrated radar reflectivity ZINT. We also account for the number of hydrometeors actually visible in each MWHS-2 channel by weightingHWP with the channel's cloud-free gas transmission profile and the observation slant path. We denote these transmission-weighted, slant-path-integrated quantities with a superscript asterisk (e.g., HWP*). The so-derived linear sensitivity of DTB with respect to HWP* increases with frequency roughly to the power of 1.78. A retrieved HWP* of 1 kgm22 at 89GHz on average corresponds to a decrease in observed TB, relative to a cloud-free background, of 11 K. At 183 GHz, the decrease is about 34-53K. We perform a similar analysis using the vertically integrated, transmission-weighted slant-path radar reflectivity Z*INT and find that DTB also decreases approximately linearly with (Z*INT)0:58. The exponent of 0.58 corresponds to the one we find in the purely DPR-retrieval-based ZINT-HWP relation. The structure of vortex Rossby waves (VRWs) and their role in the development of a secondary eyewall in Hurricane Matthew (2016) is examined from observations taken during the NOAA Sensing Hazards with Operational Unmanned Technology (SHOUT) field experiment. Radar measurements from ground-based and airborne systems, with a focus on the NASA High-Altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP) instrument on the Global Hawk aircraft, revealed the presence of; 12-15-km-wavelength spiral bands breaking from the inner-core eyewall in the downshear-right quadrant. The vorticity characteristics and calculations of the intrinsic phase speeds of the bands are shown to be consistent with sheared VRWs. A new angular momentum budget methodology is presented that allows an understanding of the secondary eyewall development process with narrow-swath radar measurements. Filtering of the governing equations enables explicit insight into the nonlinear dynamics of scale interactions and the role of the VRWs in the storm structure change. The results indicate that the large-scale (scales .15 km) vertical flux convergence of angular momentum associated with the VRWs dominates the time tendency with smaller effects from the radial flux term. The small-scale (scales # 15 km) vertical term produces weak, but nonnegligible nonlinear forcing of the large scales primarily through the Reynolds and cross-stress components. The projection of the wave kinematics onto the low-wavenumber (0 and 1) fields appears to be the more significant dynamic process. Flight-level observations show secondary peaks in tangential winds in the radial region where the VRW forcing signatures are active, connecting them with the secondary eyewall formation process. This work describes a phase-resolving wave-forecasting algorithm that is based on the assimilation of marine radar image time series. The algorithm is tested against synthetic data and field observations. The algorithm couples X-band marine radar observations with a phase-resolving wave model that uses the linear mild slope equations for reconstruction of water surface elevations over a large domain of O(km) and a prescribed time window of O(min). The reconstruction also enables wave-by-wave forecasting through forward propagation in space and time. Marine radar image time series provide the input wave observations through a previously given relationship between backscatter intensity and the radial component of the sea surface slope. The algorithm assimilates the wave slope information into the model via a best-fit wave source function at the boundary that minimizes the slope reconstruction error over an annular region at the outer ranges of the radar images. The wave model is then able to propagate the waves across a polar domain to a location of interest at nearer ranges. The attenuation-based rainfall estimator is less sensitive to the variability of raindrop size distributions (DSDs) than conventional radar rainfall estimators. For the attenuation-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), the key is to accurately estimate the horizontal specific attenuation AH, which requires a good estimate of the ray-averaged ratio between AH and specific differential phase KDP, also known as the coefficient a. In this study, a variational approach is proposed to optimize the coefficient a for better estimates of AH and rainfall. The performance of the variational approach is illustrated using observations from an S-band operational weather radar with rigorous quality control in south China, by comparing against the α optimization approach using a slope of differential reflectivity ZDR dependence on horizontal reflectivity factor ZH. Similar to the ZDR-slope approach, the variational approach can obtain the optimized a consistent with the DSD properties of precipitation on a sweep-to-sweep basis. The attenuation-based hourly rainfall estimates using the sweep-averaged a values from these two approaches show comparable accuracy when verified against the gauge measurements. One advantage of the variational approach is its feasibility to optimize a for each radar ray, which mitigates the impact of the azimuthal DSD variabilities on rainfall estimation. It is found that, based on the optimized a for radar rays, the hourly rainfall amounts derived from the variational approach are consistent with gauge measurements, showing lower bias (1.0%), higher correlation coefficient (0.92), and lower root-mean-square error (2.35 mm) than the results based on the sweepaveraged α. Weather radars and gauge observations are the primary observations to determine the coverage and magnitude of precipitation; however, radar and gauge networks have significant coverage gaps, which can underrepresent or even miss the occurrence of precipitation. This is especially noticeable in mountainous regions and in shallow precipitation regimes. The following study presents a methodology to improve spatial representations of precipitation by seamlessly blending multiple precipitation sources within the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system. A high spatiotemporal resolution multisensor merged quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) product (MSQPE) is generated by using gauge-corrected radar QPE as a primary precipitation source with a combination of hourly gauge observations, monthly precipitation climatologies, numerical weather prediction short-term precipitation forecasts, and satellite observations to use in areas of insufficient radar coverage. The merging of the precipitation sources is dependent upon radar coverage based on an updated MRMS radar quality index, surface and atmospheric conditions, topography, gauge locations, and precipitation values. Evaluations of the MSQPE product over the western United States resulted in improved statistical measures over its individual input precipitation sources, particularly the locally gauge-corrected radar QPE. TheMSQPE scheme demonstrated its ability to sufficiently fill in areas where radar alone failed to detect precipitation due to significant beam blockage or poor coverage while minimizing the generation of false precipitation and underestimation biases that resulted from radar overshooting precipitation. Although radar is our most useful tool for monitoring severe weather, the benefits of assimilating its data are often short lived. To understand why, we documented the assimilation requirements, the data characteristics, and the common practices that could hinder optimum data assimilation by traditional approaches. Within storms, radars provide dense measurements of a few highly variable storm outcomes (precipitation and wind) in atmospherically unstable conditions. However, statistical relationships between errors of observed and unobserved quantities often become nonlinear because the errors in these areas tend to become large rapidly. Beyond precipitating areas lie large regions for which radars provide limited new information, yet whose properties will soon shape the outcome of future storms. For those areas, any innovation must consequently be projected from sometimes distant precipitating areas. Thus, radar data assimilation must contend with a double need at odds with many traditional assimilation implementations: correcting in-storm properties with complex errors while projecting information at unusually far distances outside precipitating areas. To further complicate the issue, other data properties and practices, such as assimilating reflectivity in logarithmic units, are not optimal to correct all state variables. Therefore, many characteristics of radar measurements and common practices of their assimilation are incompatible with necessary conditions for successful data assimilation. Severe thunderstorms and their associated tornadoes pose significant threats to life and property, and using radar data to accurately measure the rotational velocity of circulations in thunderstorms is essential for appropriate, timely warnings. One key factor in accurately measuring circulation velocity is the azimuthal spacing between radar data points, which is referred to as the azimuthal sampling interval. Previous studies have shown that reducing the azimuthal sampling interval can aid in measuring circulation velocity; however, this comes at the price of increased computational complexity. Thus, choosing the best compromise requires knowledge of the relationship between the radar azimuthal sampling interval and the accuracy of the circulation strength as measured from the radar data. In this work, we use simulations to quantify the impact of azimuthal sampling on the strength of radar-observed circulations and show that the improvements get progressively smaller as the azimuthal sampling interval decreases. Thus, improved characterization of circulations can be achieved without using the finest possible sampling grid. We use real data to validate the results of the simulations, which can be used to inform the selection of an appropriate azimuthal sampling interval that balances the accuracy of the radar-observed circulations and computational complexity. Raindrop size distribution (DSD) observed using a disdrometer can be represented by a constrained-gamma (C-G) DSD model based on the empirical relationship between shape (µ) and slope (Λ). The C-G DSD model can be used to retrieve DSDs and rain microphysical parameters from dual-polarization radar measurements of reflectivity (ZH) and differential reflectivity (ZDR). This study presents a new µ-Λ relationship to characterize rain microphysics in South Korea using a two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) and Yong-in S-band dual-polarization radar. To minimize sampling errors from the 2DVD and radar measurements, measured size distributions are truncated by particle size and velocity-based filtering and compared with rain gauge measurement. The calibration biases of radar ZH and ZDR were calculated using the self-consistency constraint and vertical pointing measurements. The derived µ-Λ relationship was verified using the mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm) and standard deviation of the size distribution (σm), calculated from the 2DVD, for comparison with existing µ-Λ relationships for Florida and Oklahoma. The Dm-σm relationship derived from the 2DVD corresponded well with the µ-Λ relationship. The µ-Λ relationship derived for the Korean Peninsula was similar to Florida, and both generally had larger µ values than Oklahoma for the same Λ. The derived µ-Λ relationship was applied to retrieve DSD parameters from polarimetric radar data, and the retrieved DSDs and derived physical parameters were evaluated and compared with the 2DVD measurements. The polarization radar-based C-G DSD model characterized rain microphysics more accurately than the exponential DSD model. This article illustrates how multifrequency radar observations can refine the mass-size parameterization of frozen hydrometeors in scattering models and improve the correlation between the radar observations and in situ measurements of microphysical properties of ice and snow. The data presented in this article were collected during the GPM Cold Season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) (2012) and Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEx) (2015) field campaigns, where the true mass-size relationship was not measured. Starting from size and shape distributions of ice particles measured in situ, scattering models are used to simulate an ensemble of reflectivity factors for various assumed mass-size parameterizations (MSP) of the power-law type. This ensemble is then collocated to airborne and ground-based radar observations, and the MSPs are refined by retaining only those that reproduce the radar observations to a prescribed level of accuracy. A versatile "retrieval dashboard" is built to jointly analyze the optimal MSPs and associated retrievals. The analysis shows that the optimality of an MSP depends on the physical assumptions made in the scattering simulators. This work confirms also the existence of a relationship between parameters of the optimal MSPs. Through the MSP optimization, the retrievals of ice water content M and mean diameter Dm seem robust to the change in meteorological regime (between GCPEx andOLYMPEx); whereas the retrieval of the diameter spread Sm seems more campaign dependent. Improving our ability to predict future weather and climate conditions is strongly linked to achieving significant advancements in our understanding of cloud and precipitation processes. Observations are critical to making these advancements because they both improve our understanding of these processes and provide constraints on numerical models. Historically, instruments for observing cloud properties have limited cloud–aerosol investigations to a small subset of cloud-process interactions. To address these challenges, the last decade has seen the U.S. DOE ARM facility significantly upgrade and expand its surveillance radar capabilities toward providing holistic and multiscale observations of clouds and precipitation. These upgrades include radars that operate at four frequency bands covering a wide range of scattering regimes, improving upon the information contained in earlier ARM observations. The traditional ARM emphasis on the vertical column is maintained, providing more comprehensive, calibrated, and multiparametric measurements of clouds and precipitation. In addition, the ARM radar network now features multiple scanning dual-polarization Doppler radars to exploit polarimetric and multi-Doppler capabilities that provide a wealth of information on storm microphysics and dynamics under a wide range of conditions. Although the diversity in wavelengths and detection capabilities are unprecedented, there is still considerable work ahead before the full potential of these radar advancements is realized. This includes synergy with other observations, improved forward and inverse modeling methods, and well-designed data–model integration methods. The overarching goal is to provide a comprehensive characterization of a complete volume of the cloudy atmosphere and to act as a natural laboratory for the study of cloud processes. In a 2018 paper by Bukovčić et al., polarimetric bivariate power-law relations for estimating snowfall rate S and ice water content (IWC), S ⁡ (K DP , Z) = γ K DP α Z β and IWC ⁡ (K DP , Z) = γ 2 K DP α 2 Z β 2 , were developed utilizing 2D video disdrometer snow measurements in Oklahoma. Herein, these disdrometer-based relations are generalized for the range of particle aspect ratios from 0.5 to 0.8 and the width of the canting angle distribution from 0° to 40° and are validated via analytical/theoretical derivations and simulations. In addition, a novel S(KDP, Zdr) polarimetric relation utilizing the ratio between specific differential phase KDP and differential reflectivity Zdr, K DP / ⁡ (1 − Z dr − 1 ) , is derived. Both KDP and (1 − Z dr − 1 ) are proportionally affected by the ice particles' aspect ratio and width of the canting angle distribution; therefore, the variables' ratio tends to be almost invariant to the changes in these parameters. The S(KDP, Z) and S(KDP, Zdr) relations are applied to the polarimetric S-band WSR-88D data obtained from three geographical locations in Virginia, Oklahoma, and Colorado, and their performance is compared with estimations from the standard S(Z) relations and ground snow measurements. The polarimetric estimates of snow accumulations from the three cases exhibit smaller bias in comparison with the S(Z), indicating good potential for more reliable radar snow measurements. Typhoon Bolaven caused significant damage with severe rainfall all over South Korea, including Cheju Island, which received more than 250 mm in 2 days in August 2012. It was regarded as the most powerful storm to strike the Korean Peninsula in nearly a decade. The rainfall-rate datasets were obtained from S-band radar operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration to be analyzed and compared with the mesoscale Cloud Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS) model simulation. Multifractal analysis was conducted to understand the structure of the rainfall rate with height in the typhoon system. The radar rainfall data presented with strong intermittency across scales at lower altitudes (1 and 2 km) and a more homogeneous rainfall field at high altitude (5 km) with two parameters (fractal codimension and multifractality index). Radar and surface rainfall observations are two sources of operational data crucial for heavy rainfall prediction. Their individual values on improving convective forecasting through data assimilation have been examined in the past using convection-permitting numerical models. However, the benefit of their simultaneous assimilations has not yet been evaluated. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that, using a 4D-Var data assimilation system with a microphysical scheme, these two data sources can be assimilated simultaneously and the combined assimilation of radar data and estimated rainfall data from radar reflectivity and surface network can lead to improved short-term heavy rainfall prediction. In our study, a combined data assimilation experiment is compared with a rainfall-only and a radar-only (with or without reflectivity) experiments for a heavy rainfall event occurring in Taiwan during the passage of a mei-yu system. These experiments are conducted by applying the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) 4D-Var data assimilation system with a 20-min time window aiming to improve 6-h convective heavy rainfall prediction. Our results indicate that the rainfall data assimilation contributes significantly to the analyses of humidity and temperature whereas the radar data assimilation plays a crucial role in wind analysis, and further, combining the two data sources results in reasonable analyses of all three fields by eliminating large, unphysical analysis increments from the experiments of assimilating individual data only. A detailed damage survey is combined with high-resolution mobile, rapid-scanning X-band polarimetric radar data collected on the Shawnee, Oklahoma, tornado of 19 May 2013. The focus of this study is the radar data collected during a period when the tornado was producing damage rated EF3. Vertical profiles of mobile radar data, centered on the tornado, revealed that the radar reflectivity was approximately uniform with height and increased in magnitude as more debris was lofted. There was a large decrease in both the cross-correlation coefficient (ρhv) and differential radar reflectivity (ZDR) immediately after the tornado exited the damaged area rated EF3. Low ρhv and ZDR occurred near the surface where debris loading was the greatest. The 10th percentile of ρhv decreased markedly after large amounts of debris were lofted after the tornado leveled a number of structures. Subsequently, ρhv quickly recovered to higher values. This recovery suggests that the largest debris had been centrifuged or fallen out whereas light debris remained or continued to be lofted. Range–height profiles of the dual-Doppler analyses that were azimuthally averaged around the tornado revealed a zone of maximum radial convergence at a smaller radius relative to the leading edge of lofted debris. Low-level inflow into the tornado encountering a positive bias in the tornado-relative radial velocities could explain the existence of the zone. Quasi-vertical profiles (QVPs) obtained from a database of U.S. WSR-88D data are used to document polarimetric characteristics of the melting layer (ML) in cold-season storms with high vertical resolution and accuracy. A polarimetric technique to define the top and bottom of the ML is first introduced. Using the QVPs, statistical relationships are developed to gain insight into the evolution of microphysical processes above, within, and below the ML, leading to a statistical polarimetric model of the ML that reveals characteristics that reflectivity data alone are not able to provide, particularly in regions of weak reflectivity factor at horizontal polarization ZH. QVP ML statistics are examined for two regimes in the ML data: ZH ≥ 20 dBZ and ZH < 20 dBZ. Regions of ZH ≥ 20 dBZ indicate locations of MLs collocated with enhanced differential reflectivity ZDR and reduced copolar correlation coefficient ρhv, while for ZH < 20 dBZ a well-defined ML is difficult to discern using ZH alone. Evidence of large ZDR up to 4 dB, backscatter differential phase δ up to 8°, and low ρhv down to 0.80 associated with lower ZH (from −10 to 20 dBZ) in the ML is observed when pristine, nonaggregated ice falls through it. Positive correlation is documented between maximum specific differential phase KDP and maximum ZH in the ML; these are the first QVP observations of KDP in MLs documented at S band. Negative correlation occurs between minimum ρhv in the ML and ML depth and between minimum ρhv in the ML and the corresponding enhancement of ZH (ΔZH = ZHmax − ZHrain). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To fulfill the evolving observational needs of the National Weather Service (NWS), future weather radar systems will have to meet demanding requirements. Designing such systems will likely involve trade-offs between system cost and operational performance. A potential cost driver for future weather radars that could cause significant data-quality impacts on forecasters is the required angular resolution and sidelobe performance, which are mainly dictated by the antenna radiation pattern. Typical antenna radiation patterns can be characterized by the width of the main lobe and their sidelobe levels, which are traditionally measured across the azimuthal and elevation dimensions. In this work, we study the impact of increasing sidelobe levels on NWS forecasters' data interpretation during warning operations. A well-designed deployment of well-maintained surface instruments as well as abundant rainfall provided an excellent dataset with which to evaluate the Micro Rain Radar (MRR) performance for estimating raindrop size distribution (DSD) and its integral rainfall parameters with respect to the consolidated devices during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) field campaign. The MRR was collocated with two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) and Autonomous Parsivel2 Unit (APU) at three different sites located at 5–70-km distances from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's S-band dual-polarization Doppler radar (NPOL). A comparative study between MRR, 2DVD, APU, and NPOL was conducted including all rainy minutes as well as minutes of stratiform rain and convective rain. Considering 2DVD as a primary reference, a good agreement was evident for reflectivity between MRR's lowest reliable height and 2DVD with an absolute bias of less than 2 dB even in convective rain except for one site. For rainfall rate, the percent absolute bias between MRR and 2DVD ranged between 25% and 35% in stratiform rain and about 10% higher in convective rain. Agreement for mean mass-weighted raindrop diameter was good (bias less than 0.1 mm), whereas MRR overestimated the normalized intercept parameter of the gamma DSD [mean bias among the three sites was −0.13 log(mm−1 m−3)]. The agreement between MRR and APU was slightly worse than the one between MRR and 2DVD. When the horizontal and differential reflectivities of NPOL were compared with the ones derived from the MRR DSD resampled within the radar volume, we found an absolute bias of approximately 3 and 0.4 dB, respectively. Supercell thunderstorms produce a variety of hazards, including tornadoes. A supercell will often exist for some time prior to producing a tornado, while other supercells never become tornadic. In this study, a series of hypotheses is tested regarding the ability of S-band polarimetric radar fields to distinguish pretornadic from nontornadic supercell storms. Several quantified polarimetric radar metrics are examined that are related to storm inflow, updraft, and hailfall characteristics in samples of 19–30 pretornadic and 18–31 nontornadic supercells. The results indicate that pretornadic supercells are characterized by smaller hail extent and echo appendages with larger mean drop size. Additionally, differential reflectivity ZDR column size is larger and less variable in the pretornadic storms in the 25–30 min prior to initial tornadogenesis. Many of the results indicate relatively small polarimetric differences that will likely be difficult to translate to operational use. Hail extent and ZDR column size, however, may exhibit operationally useful differences between pretornadic and nontornadic supercells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radar reflectivity (Z) data are either directly assimilated using 3DVar, 4DVar, or ensemble Kalman filter, or indirectly assimilated using, for example, cloud analysis that preretrieves hydrometeors from Z. When directly assimilating radar data variationally, issues related to the highly nonlinear Z operator arise that can cause nonconvergence and bad analyses. To alleviate the issues, treatments are proposed in this study and their performances are examined via observing system simulation experiments. They include the following: 1) When using hydrometeor mixing ratios as control variables (CVq), small background Z can cause extremely large cost function gradient. Lower limits are imposed on the mixing ratios (qLim treatment) or the equivalent reflectivity (ZeLim treatment) in Z observation operator. ZeLim is found to work better than qLim in terms of analysis accuracy and convergence speed. 2) With CVq, the assimilation of radial velocity (Vr) is ineffective when assimilated together with Z data due to the much smaller cost function gradient associated with Vr. A procedure (VrPass) that assimilates Vr data in a separate pass is found very helpful. 3) Using logarithmic hydrometeor mixing ratios as control variables (CVlogq) can also avoid extremely large cost function gradient, and has much faster convergence. However, spurious analysis increments can be created when transforming the analysis increments back to mixing ratios. A background smoothing and a lower limit are applied to the background mixing ratios, and are shown to be effective. Using CVlogq with associated treatments produces better reflectivity analysis that is much closer to the observation without resorting to multiple analysis passes, and the cost function minimization also converges faster.
