This article discusses the results of a research, which examined the attitudes of library employees from Missouri towards romance fiction and its readers. Respondents in this survey were Missouri library directors, which is composed of both major in library science-degreed librarians and individuals who perform all the functions of a librarian though they do not hold the accredited degree. The library literature that was used in this study were composed of anecdotes and assumptions, which makes this research exploratory in nature. This article presents a review of academic and library literature regarding romance novels and discusses the methods used in the survey.

The article focuses on the joint program of Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science and Harvard University libraries to train Iraqi librarians, and library and information science educators to aid in modernizing Iraqi Libraries in Amman, Jordan. The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded Simmons and Harvard a two-year project grant. The team developed frameworks and parameters for the courses that will be taught in 2005. There are two back-to-back sessions in Amman, with the first session commencing on July 4, 2005 and the second session ending on July 29, 2005. The venue for the courses will be held on American Center of Oriental Research, a private, non-profit academic institution that is dedicated to promote research in Near East Studies.

The article focuses on the instruction a la carte menu for instruction librarians and professors to make them understand how much time is needed to be spent on each library topic. The team will assign a price to each commonly requested topic. If the total cost exceeds the class session, they can cut topics or buy two instruction sessions. The team hoped that the menu would communicate to the professors the limitations of a single 50-minute session. The distribution of the menu's URL in e-mail sent to faculty is the most effective strategy. Professors will click on the link and can learn about the variety instruction choices and can fill-up online request form.

This article announces that the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in the United States is inviting its members to volunteer as committee members. Benefits from volunteering include: the building of ties with academic and research librarians around the country; the enhancement of leadership abilities; the sharing of expertise with colleagues; and the gaining of additional expertise by learning more about a new area of academic librarianship or picking up new ideas for their current areas. The steps in the appointment process and the application process are described.

This article documents some techniques librarians unintentionally use to persuade or dissuade students from becoming librarians. Recruitment to the profession begins early and is supported by the actions of librarians. Recruitment goes beyond just offering money for someone to go to library school. Money is nice but scholarships are not enough to encourage people to go into a profession about which they do not care. Scholarship opportunities for underrepresented students are meaningful and important but they are not the complete solution. In the recruitment process, small steps are as important as big ones. To get future students of color to care about librarianship, the research suggests that librarians should provide a base of support that emphasizes respect and service. Librarians should be visible as service agents within the community. Each librarian must speculate on what messages she or he is sending to young people of color and make certain those messages are the kind that will promote librarianship as a career option.

This article includes perspectives in readers advisory from long-time librarians as well as new librarians. There are practices through which librarians can become a better readers advisor. These practices include writing a reading list regularly, listening to audio books, challenging one's self to read several books on a particularly genre, visiting book fairs and events, connecting with book authors and library patrons, and volunteering in readers advisory classes. It also entails browsing exhibitions and bookstore, skimming newspapers for book reviews, remembering the literary style of authors and encouraging the library staff to attend readers advisory training. There are also resources which can be used by librarians to improve readers advisory. Such resources include web sites like Fiction archives and book lists, Webrary and What Do I Read Next?. These electronic databases give up-to-date reading lists and suggest books to read. S. N. Ranganathan's five laws of library science also apply to readers advisory. These are: books are for use; every book its reader; every reader his book; save the time of the reader; and, the library is a growing organism. All in all, a librarian would find that readers advisory is fun and with the right planning, this task can be most rewarding in itself.

The article presents a case study regarding the opinion of students to diversity in librarianship, based on a survey conducted by the American Library Association (ALA). The survey revealed that only seventy-five out of 842 graduates placed in a permanent library position were African American or Hispanics. Meanwhile, the School of Library and Information Studies at Clark Atlanta University showed there is a difficulty in recruiting minorities in the profession because school programs lack representation of minorities among their faculty. To determine the problem in most schools, ALA used a focus group approach to research students attitudes toward careers in librarianship at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
