The Opacity Platform on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed to measure opacities at varying densities and temperatures relevant to the solar interior and thermal cooling rates in white dwarf stars. The typical temperatures reached at NIF range between 150 and 210 eV, which allow these measurements to be performed experimentally. The captured opacities are crucial to validating radiation-hydrodynamic models that are used in astrophysics. The NIF opacity platform has a unique new capability that allows in situ measurement of the sample expansion. The sample expansion data are used to better understand the plasma conditions in our experiments by inferring the sample density throughout the duration of the laser drive. The Opacity Platform on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed to measure iron opacities at varying densities and temperatures relevant to the solar interior and to verify recent experimental results obtained at the Sandia Z-machine, that diverge from theory. The first set of NIF experiments collected iron opacity data at ∼150 eV to 160 eV and an electron density of ∼7 × 1021 cm−3, with a goal to study temperatures up to ∼210 eV, with electron densities of up to ∼3 × 1022 cm−3. Among several techniques used to infer the temperature of the heated Fe sample, the absolutely calibrated DANTE-2 filtered diode array routinely provides measurements of the hohlraum conditions near the sample. However, the DANTE-2 temperatures are consistently low compared to pre-shot LASNEX simulations for a range of laser drive energies. We have re-evaluated the estimated uncertainty in the reported DANTE-2 temperatures and also the error generated by varying channel participation in the data analysis. An uncertainty of ±5% or better can be achieved with appropriate spectral coverage, channel participation, and metrology of the viewing slot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several approaches to Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF), including double-shell, pushered-single-shell, and the Revolver designs, have fuel surrounded by pushers made from high-Z materials. An advantage of these designs is that radiation emitted by the hot fuel will be absorbed and re-radiated into the fuel to reduce cooling. This process is referred to as radiation-trapping, and it lowers the fuel temperature required for ignition. To elucidate the physics of radiation trapping, a simplified model comprising a set of coupled differential equations has been developed to model the arbitrary time-dependent wall temperature from the Hammer and Rosen solution [J. H. Hammer and M. D. Rosen, Phys. Plasmas 10, 1829 (2003)] to a Marshak wave. The derivation of the model and a set of analytical power-law solutions will be presented. Advances in target fabrication have made double shell capsule implosions a viable platform to study burning fusion plasmas. Central to the double shell capsule is a high-Z (e.g., Au) metal pusher that accesses the volume-burn regime by reducing radiative losses through radiation trapping and compressing a uniform fuel volume at reduced velocities. A double shell implosion relies on a series of energy transfer processes starting from x-ray absorption by the outer shell, followed by transfer of kinetic energy to an inner shell, and finally conversion of kinetic energy to fuel internal energy. We present simulation and experimental results on momentum transfer to different layers in a double shell. We also present the details of the development of the NIF cylindrical hohlraum double shell platform including an imaging shell design with a mid-Z inner shell necessary for imaging the inner shell shape and the trajectory with the current 2DConA platform capability. We examine 1D energy transfer between shell layers using trajectory measurements from a series of surrogate targets; the series builds to a complete double shell layer by layer, isolating the physics of each step of the energy transfer process. The measured energy transfer to the foam cushion and the inner shell suggests that our radiation-hydrodynamics simulations capture most of the relevant collision physics. With a 1 MJ laser drive, the experimental data indicate that 22% ± 3% of the ablator kinetic energy couples into inner shell KE, compared to a 27% ± 2% coupling in our xRAGE simulations. Thus, our xRAGE simulations match experimental energy transfer to ∼5%, without inclusion of higher order 2D and 3D effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Double shell capsules are predicted to ignite and burn at relatively low temperature (∼3 keV) via volume ignition and are a potential low-convergence path to substantial α-heating and possibly ignition at the National Ignition Facility. Double shells consist of a dense, high-Z pusher, which first shock heats and then performs work due to changes in pressure and volume (PdV work) on deuterium-tritium gas, bringing the entire fuel volume to high pressure thermonuclear conditions near implosion stagnation. The high-Z pusher is accelerated via a shock and subsequent compression of an intervening foam cushion by an ablatively driven low-Z outer shell. A broad capsule design parameter space exists due to the inherent flexibility of potential materials for the outer and inner shells and foam cushion. This is narrowed down by design physics choices and the ability to fabricate and assemble the separate pieces forming a double shell capsule. We describe the key physics for good double shell performance, the trade-offs in various design choices, and the challenges for capsule fabrication. This paper discusses the modeling of experiments that measure iron opacity in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) using laser-driven hohlraums at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). A previous set of experiments fielded at Sandia's Z facility [Bailey et al., Nature 517, 56 (2015)] have shown up to factors of two discrepancies between the theory and experiment, casting doubt on the validity of the opacity models. The purpose of the new experiments is to make corroborating measurements at the same densities and temperatures, with the initial measurements made at a temperature of 160 eV and an electron density of 0.7 × 1022 cm−3. The X-ray hot spots of a laser-driven hohlraum are not in LTE, and the iron must be shielded from a direct line-of-sight to obtain the data [Perry et al., Phys. Rev. B 54, 5617 (1996)]. This shielding is provided either with the internal structure (e.g., baffles) or external wall shapes that divide the hohlraum into a laser-heated portion and an LTE portion. In contrast, most inertial confinement fusion hohlraums are simple cylinders lacking complex gold walls, and the design codes are not typically applied to targets like those for the opacity experiments. We will discuss the initial basis for the modeling using LASNEX, and the subsequent modeling of five different hohlraum geometries that have been fielded on the NIF to date. The loss of fuel ions in the Gamow peak and other kinetic effects related to the a particles during ignition, run-away burn, and disassembly stages of an inertial confinement fusion D-T capsule are investigated with a quasi-1D hybrid volume ignition model that includes kinetic ions, fluid electrons, Planckian radiation photons, and a metallic pusher. The fuel ion loss due to the Knudsen effect at the fuel-pusher interface is accounted for by a local-loss model by Molvig et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 095001 (2012)] with an albedo model for ions returning from the pusher wall. The tail refilling and relaxation of the fuel ion distribution are captured with a nonlinear Fokker-Planck solver. Alpha heating of the fuel ions is modeled kinetically while simple models for finite alpha range and electron heating are used. This dynamical model is benchmarked with a 3 T hydrodynamic burn model employing similar assumptions. For an energetic pusher (~40 kJ) that compresses the fuel to an areal density of ~1.07g/cm² at ignition, the simulation shows that the Knudsen effect can substantially limit ion temperature rise in runaway burn. While the final yield decreases modestly from kinetic effects of the a particles, large reduction of the fuel reactivity during ignition and runaway burn may require a higher Knudsen loss rate compared to the rise time of the temperatures above ~25 keV when the broad D-T Gamow peak merges into the bulk Maxwellian distribution. Recent work by Molvig et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 095001 (2012)] examined how fusion reactivity may be reduced from losses of fast ions in finite assemblies of fuel. In this paper, this problem is revisited with the addition of an asymptotic boundary-layer treatment of ion kinetic losses. This boundary solution, reminiscent of the classical Milne problem from linear transport theory, obtains a free-streaming limit of fast ion losses near the boundary, where the diffusion approximation is invalid. Thermonuclear reaction rates have been obtained for the ion distribution functions predicted by this improved model. It is found that while Molvig's 'Knudsen distribution function' bounds from above the magnitude of the reactivity reduction, this more accurate treatment leads to less dramatic losses of tail ions and associated reduction of thermonuclear reaction rates for finite fuel volumes. Recent experiments at the Sandia National Laboratory Z facility have called into question models used in calculating opacity, of importance for modeling stellar interiors. An effort is being made to reproduce these results at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). These experiments require a new X-ray opacity spectrometer (OpSpec) spanning 540 eV-2100 eV with a resolving power E/ΔE > 700. The design of the OpSpec is presented. We present the calculations and preliminary results from experiments on the Omega laser facility using d-3He filled plastic capsule implosions in gold Hohlraums. These experiments aim to develop a technique to measure shell ρr and capsule unablated mass with proton spectroscopy and will be applied to future National Ignition Facility (NIF) experiments with ignition scale capsules. The Omega Hohlraums are 1900 μm length×1200 μm diameter and have a 70% laser entrance hole. This is approximately a 0.2 NIF scale ignition Hohlraum and reaches temperatures of 265–275 eV similar to those during the peak of the NIF drive. These capsules can be used as a diagnostic of shell ρr, since the d-3He gas fill produces 14.7 MeV protons in the implosion, which escape through the shell and produce a proton spectrum that depends on the integrated ρr of the remaining shell mass. The neutron yield, proton yield, and spectra change with capsule shell thickness as the unablated mass or remaining capsule ρr changes. Proton stopping models are used to infer shell unablated mass and shell ρr from the proton spectra measured with different filter thicknesses. The experiment is well modeled with respect to Hohlraum energetics, neutron yields, and x-ray imploded core image size, but there are discrepancies between the observed and simulated proton spectra. Experiments done at the National Ignition Facility laser [J. A. Paisner, E. M. Campbell, and W. Hogan, Fusion Technol. 26, 755 (1994)] using gas-filled hohlraums demonstrate a key ignition design feature, i.e., using plasma pressure from a gas fill to tamp the hohlraum-wall expansion for the duration of the laser pulse. Moreover, our understanding of hohlraum energetics and the ability to predict the hohlraum soft-x-ray drive has been validated in ignition-relevant conditions. Finally, the laser reflectivity from stimulated Raman scattering in the fill plasma, a key threat to hohlraum performance, is shown to be suppressed by choosing a design with a sufficiently high ratio of electron temperature to density. As Langmuir waves (LWs) are driven to large amplitude in plasma, they are affected by nonlinear mechanisms. A global understanding, based on simulations and experiments, has emerged that identifies various nonlinear regimes depending on the dimensionless parameter kλD, where k is the Langmuir wave number and λD is the electron Debye length. The nonlinear phenomena arise due to wave-wave and wave-particle coupling mechanisms, and this basic separation between fluid-like nonlinearities and kinetic nonlinearities depends on the degree to which electron and ion Landau damping, as well as electron trapping, play a role. Previous ionospheric heating experiments [Cheung et al. Phys. Plasmas 8, 802 (2001)] identified cavitation/collapse and Langmuir decay instability (LDI), predominantly wave-wave mechanisms, to be the principal nonlinear effects for driven LWs with kλD<0.1, in agreement with fluid simulations [DuBois et al. Phys. Plasmas 8, 791 (2001)]. In the present research, collective Thomson scattering measurements of LWs driven by stimulated Raman scattering in laser-plasma experiments are used to study both wave-wave and wave-particle nonlinearities [Kline et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 175003 (2005)]. For kλD<0.29, multiple LWs are detected and are attributed to LDI, a wave-wave nonlinear regime. For kλD>0.29, a single-wave, frequency-broadened spectrum is observed associated with electron trapping, a wave-particle nonlinear regime. The transition from wave-wave to wave-particle nonlinear behavior is qualitatively consistent with particle-in-cell simulations and with the crossing of the LDI threshold above that for LW self-focusing. The fact that LDI is observed in both ionospheric and laser-plasma experiments for similar values of kλD, though vastly differing in plasma conditions and scales, and that simulations predict the various observed nonlinear regimes over a large range of kλD, supports our global view of LW nonlinear behavior. An intense, high-energy electron or positron beam can have focused intensities rivaling those of today’s most powerful laser beams. For example, the 5 ps (full-width, half-maximum), 50 GeV beam at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) at 1 kA and focused to a 3 micron rms spot size gives intensities of >10[sup 20] W/cm-2 at a repetition rate of >10 Hz. Unlike a ps or fs laser pulse which interacts with the surface of a solid target, the particle beam can readily tunnel through tens of cm of steel. However, the same particle beam can be manipulated quite effectively by a plasma that is a million times less dense than air! This is because of the incredibly strong collective fields induced in the plasma by the Coulomb force of the beam. The collective fields in turn react back onto the beam leading to many clearly observable phenomena. The beam paraticles can be: (1) Deflected leading to focusing, defocusing, or even steering of the beam; (2) undulated causing the emission of spontaneous betatron x-ray radiation and; (3) accelerated or decelerated by the plasma fields. Using the 28.5 GeV electron beam from the SLAC linac a series of experiments have been carried out that demonstrate clearly many of the above mentioned effects. The results can be compared with theoretical predictions and with two-dimensional and three-dimensional, one-to-one, particle-in-cell code simulations. These phenomena may have practical applications in future technologies including optical elements in particle beam lines, synchrotron light sources, and ultrahigh gradient accelerators. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. In the E-157 experiment now being conducted at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, a 30 GeV electron beam of 2x10[sup 10] electrons in a 0.65-mm-long bunch is propagated through a 1.4-m-long lithium plasma of density up to 2x10[sup 14] e[sup -]/cm[sup 3]. The initial beam density is greater than the plasma density, and the head of the bunch expels the plasma electrons leaving behind a uniform ion channel with transverse focusing fields of up to several thousand tesla per meter. The initial transverse beam size with σ=50-100 μm is larger than the matched size of 5 μm resulting in up to three beam envelope oscillations within the plasma. Time integrated optical transition radiation is used to study the transverse beam profile immediately before and after the plasma and to characterize the transverse beam dynamics as a function of plasma density. The head of the bunch deposits energy into plasma wakes, resulting in longitudinal accelerating fields which are witnessed by the tail of the same bunch. A time-resolved Cherenkov imaging system is located in an energy dispersive plane downstream of the plasma. It images the beam onto a streak camera allowing time-resolved measurements of the beam energy spectrum as a function of plasma density. Using the reduced-description particle-in-cell (RPIC) method, we study the coupling of backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS) and backward stimulated Brillouin scattering (BSBS) in regimes where the reflectivity involves the nonlinear behavior of particles trapped in the daughter plasma waves. The temporal envelope of a Langmuir wave (LW) obeys a Schrödinger equation where the potential is the periodic electron density fluctuation resulting from an ion-acoustic wave (IAW). The BSRS-driven LWs in this case have a Bloch wave structure and a modified dispersion due to the BSBS-driven spatially periodic IAW, which includes frequency band gaps at kLW∼kIAW/2∼k0 (kLW, kIAW, and k0 are the wave number of the LW, IAW, and incident pump electromagnetic wave, respectively). This band structure and the associated Bloch wave harmonic components are distinctly observed in RPIC calculations of the electron density fluctuation spectra and this structure may be observable in Thomson scatter. Bloch wave components grow up in the LW spectrum, and are not the result of isolated BSRS. Self-Thomson scattered light from these Bloch wave components can have forward scattering components. The distortion of the LW dispersion curve implies that the usual relationship connecting the frequency shift of the BSRS-scattered light and the density of origin of this light may become inaccurate. The modified LW frequency results in a time-dependent frequency shift that increases as the IAW grows, detunes the BSRS frequency matching condition, and reduces BSRS growth. A dependence of the BSRS reflectivity on the IAW Landau damping results because this damping determines the levels of IAWs. The time-dependent reflectivity in our simulations is characterized by bursts of sub-picosecond pulses of BSRS alternating with multi-ps pulses of BSBS, and BSRS is observed to decline precipitously as soon as SBS begins to grow from low levels. In strong BSBS regimes, the Bloch wave effects in BSRS are strong and temporal anti-correlation with BSRS is due to pump depletion in addition to frequency detuning. In most cases studied, BSBS suppressed the time-averaged reflectivity of BSRS compared to the levels obtained with fixed ions (and therefore no BSBS). The strong spatial modulation of the Bloch Langmuir waves appears to weaken electron trapping and thereby lowers the inflated reflectivity levels of BSRS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The yield of an inertial confinement fusion capsule can be greatly affected by the inclusion of high-Z material in the fuel, either intentionally as a diagnostic or from mixing due to hydrodynamic instabilities. To validate calculations of these conditions, glass shell targets filled with a D2 and 3He fuel mixture were fielded in experiments with controlled amounts of pre-mixed Ar, Kr, or Xe. The experiments were fielded at the OMEGA laser [T. R. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)] using 1.0 ns square laser pulses having a total energy 23 kJ and direct drive illumination of shells with an outer diameter of ∼925 μm and a thickness of ∼5 μm. Data were collected and compared to one-dimensional integrated models for yield and burn-temperature measurements. This paper presents a critical examination of the calculational assumptions used in our experimental modeling. A modified treatment of laser-capsule interaction improves the match to the measured scattered laser light and also improves agreement for yields, burn-temperatures, and the fuel compression as measured by the ratio of two yields. A study was performed to determine the relationship between polyurethane composition and viscoelastic properties in a series of model urethane compounds. The compositional variables studied included the nature of the soft segment, amount of hard segment, and cure stochiometry. Model urethanes were prepared using the aliphatic diisocyanate, metatetramethylene diisocyanate (m-TMXDI). This aliphatic isocyanate is less reactive than commonly used aromatic isocyanates and does not undergo the secondary cross-linking reactions commonly observed with aromatic isocyanates. The urethanes chosen for this study contained soft segments based on hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPBD) or polycaprolactone (PCL), which is a highly polar material in which extensive phase mixing should occur. In contrast, polyurethanes based on HTPBD should undergo more complete phase separation. Prepolymers were prepared with both of these soft segments and with available isocyanate contents varying from 3.7% to 5.7%. Diethyltoluene diamine (DETDA) was used to cure these prepolymers over a range of cure stochiometries. Thermal transitions attributed to the hard and soft segments were observed in these urethanes using a Perkin-Elmer DSC-4. Dynamic mechancial behavior was measured using both a Polymer Labs dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) and a resonance apparatus developed at the NRL-USRD. A point-projection soft X-ray Opacity Spectrometer (OpSpec) has been implemented to measure X-ray spectra from ∼1 to 2 keV on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Measurement of such soft X-rays with open-aperture point-projection detectors is challenging because only very thin filters may be used to shield the detector from the hostile environment. OpSpec diffracts X-rays from 540 to 2100 eV off a potassium (or rubidium) acid phthalate (KAP or RbAP) crystal onto either image plates or, most recently, X-ray films. A "sacrificial front filter" strategy is used to prevent crystal damage, while 2 or 3 rear filters protect the data. Since May 2017, OpSpec has been recording X-ray transmission data for iron-magnesium plasmas on the NIF, at "Anchor 1" plasma conditions (temperature ∼150 eV, density ∼7 × 10 21 e - /cm 3 ). Upgrades improved OpSpec's performance on 6 NIF shots in August and December 2017, with reduced backgrounds and 100% data return using filter stacks as thin as 2.9 μ m (total). Photometric noise is beginning to meet requirements, and further work will reduce systematic errors.
