We present a reduced-order model to calculate response matrices rapidly for filter stack spectrometers (FSSs). The reduced-order model allows response matrices to be built modularly from a set of pre-computed photon and electron transport and scattering calculations through various filter and detector materials. While these modular response matrices are not appropriate for high-fidelity analysis of experimental data, they encode sufficient physics to be used as a forward model in design optimization studies of FSSs, particularly for machine learning approaches that require sampling and testing a large number of FSS designs. Ignition on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) provides a novel opportunity to evaluate past data to identify signatures of capsule failure mechanisms. We have used new simulations of high-yield implosions as well as some from past studies in order to identify unique signatures of different ignition failure mechanisms: jetting due to the presence of voids or defects, jetting due to the capsule fill tube, interfacial mixing due to instabilities or due to plasma transport, radiative cooling due to the presence of contaminant in the hot spot, long-wavelength drive asymmetry, and preheat. Many of these failure mechanisms exhibit unique trajectories that can be distinguished through variations in experimental observables such as neutron yield, down-scattered ratio (DSR), and burn width. Our simulations include capsules using both plastic and high-density carbon ablators and span all high-yield designs considered since the beginning of the National Ignition Campaign in 2011. We observe that the variability in trajectories through the space of neutron yield, DSR, and burn width varies little across capsule design yet are unique to the failure mechanism. The experimental trajectories are most consistent with simulated preheat and jetting due to voids and defects, which are the only failure mechanisms that are indistinguishable in our analysis. This suggests that improvements to capsule compression due to improved capsule quality or reduced preheat have played a primary role in enabling high yields on NIF. We present an inversion method capable of robustly unfolding MeV x-ray spectra from filter stack spectrometer (FSS) data without requiring an a priori specification of a spectral shape or arbitrary termination of the algorithm. Our inversion method is based upon the perturbative minimization (PM) algorithm, which has previously been shown to be capable of unfolding x-ray transmission data, albeit for a limited regime in which the x-ray mass attenuation coefficient of the filter material increases monotonically with x-ray energy. Our inversion method improves upon the PM algorithm through regular smoothing of the candidate spectrum and by adding stochasticity to the search. With these additions, the inversion method does not require a physics model for an initial guess, fitting, or user-selected termination of the search. Instead, the only assumption made by the inversion method is that the x-ray spectrum should be near a smooth curve. Testing with synthetic data shows that the inversion method can successfully recover the primary large-scale features of MeV x-ray spectra, including the number of x-rays in energy bins of several-MeV widths to within 10%. Fine-scale features, however, are more difficult to recover accurately. Indirectly driven shock-tube experiments were performed on the Omega Laser Facility to evaluate the relative importance of hohlraum x ray and radiative shock preheat sources on a low-density foam. X rays emitted from the hohlraum and a subsequent shock wave are channeled into a low-density foam sample, which contains a plastic preheat-witness disk placed downstream of the foam. Simultaneous radiographic measurements of the shock speed in the foam and the expansion rate of the witness disk due to preheat allow for the observation of effects from the hohlraum's low-energy and high-energy x-ray spectrum. We showed, from simulations, that low-energy x rays from the hohlraum are preferentially absorbed near the ablator surface (where the hohlraum and the shock tube meet), while higher-energy x rays largely pass through the ablator and foam and are volumetrically absorbed by the witness disk. Reproducing the experimentally measured shock speed and expansion of the witness disk simultaneously, we extracted the temperature evolution of preheated foam from the simulation and evaluated the relative importance of preheat sources on a low-density foam from hohlraum x-ray radiation and radiative shock. We found that radiation from the shock front was more effective at preheating the low-density foam than the high-energy x rays from the hohlraum. This shock-tube preheat experiment is important for understanding the results of the MARBLE experiments at the National Ignition Facility because initial conditions of foam-filled MARBLE capsules are sensitive to preheat. The influences of ion trapping and fluctuations of electron temperature and plasma flow on cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) are examined using two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in parameter regimes relevant to recent CBET experiments at the OMEGA laser facility. In mid-Z plasma irradiated by an intense pump beam and weaker probe beam, ion trapping, collisional de-trapping, and plasma flow induced by thermal effects are shown to affect the CBET gain. Ion trapping can enhance or detune the CBET resonance [Nguyen et al., Phys. Plasmas 28, 082705 (2021)]. Collisional de-trapping can affect the CBET gain at low seed beam intensity near the onset threshold for ion trapping. Thermal-effects-induced flow can also detune the CBET resonance at a level comparable to that from trapping at low seed beam intensity. As a consequence, the CBET gain is sensitive to collisions and dimensionality at low seed beam intensity where ion trapping is weak but is insensitive to collisions and dimensionality at high seed beam intensity where ion trapping is strong. In cross-beam energy transfer (CBET), the interference of two laser beams ponderomotively drives an ion-acoustic wave that coherently scatters light from one beam into the other. This redirection of laser beam energy can severely inhibit the performance of direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions. To assess the role of nonlinear and kinetic processes in direct-drive-relevant CBET, the energy transfer between two laser beams in the plasma conditions of an ICF implosion at the OMEGA laser facility was modeled using particle-in-cell simulations. For typical laser beam intensities, the simulations are in excellent agreement with linear kinetic theory, indicating that nonlinear processes do not play a role in direct-drive implosions. At higher intensities, CBET can be modified by pump depletion, backward stimulated Raman scattering, or ion trapping, depending on the plasma density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions involve highly coupled physics and complex hydrodynamics that are challenging to model computationally. Due to the sensitivity of such implosions to small features, detailed simulations require accurate accounting of the geometry and dimensionality of the initial conditions, including capsule defects and engineering features such as fill tubes used to insert gas into the capsule, yet this is computationally prohibitive. It is therefore difficult to evaluate whether discrepancies between the simulation and experiment arise from inadequate fidelity to the capsule geometry and drive conditions, uncertainties in physical data used by simulations, or inadequate physics. We present results from detailed high-resolution three-dimensional simulations of ICF implosions performed as part of the MARBLE campaign on the National Ignition Facility [Albright et al., Phys. Plasmas 29, 022702 (2022)]. These experiments are foam-filled separated-reactant experiments, where deuterons reside in the foam and tritons reside in the capsule gas fill and deuterium–tritium (DT) fusion reactions only occur in the presence of mixing between these materials. Material mixing in these experiments is primarily seeded by shock interaction with the complex geometry of the foam and gas fill, which induces the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability. We compare results for experiments with two different gas fills (ArT and HT), which lead to significant differences in the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic developments of the materials in the implosion. Our simulation results show generally good agreement with experiments and demonstrate a substantial impact of hydrodynamic flows on measured ion temperatures. The results suggest that viscosity, which was not included in our simulations, is the most important unmodeled physics and qualitatively explains the few discrepancies between the simulation and experiment. The results also suggest that the hydrodynamic treatment of shocks is inadequate to predict the heating and yield produced during shock flash, when the shock converges at the center of the implosion. Alternatively, underestimation of the level of radiative preheat from the shock front could explain many of the differences between the experiment and simulation. Nevertheless, simulations are able to reproduce many experimental observables within the level of experimental reproducibility, including most yields, time-resolved X-ray self-emission images, and an increase in burn-weighted ion temperature and neutron down-scattered ratio in the line of sight that includes a jet seeded by the glue spot that joins capsule hemispheres. After decades of research, recent laser-driven inertial fusion experiments have demonstrated rapid progress toward achieving thermonuclear ignition using capsule designs with cryogenic fuel layers. The ignition physics for these layered capsules involves a complex interplay between the dynamically forming hot spot and the dense surrounding fuel. Using analytic theory and numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the mass ablation rate into the hot spot depends sensitively upon the temperature of the dense fuel, resulting in ablative inflows up to 4 × faster than previous estimates. This produces an enthalpy flux into the hot spot that plays a critical role in controlling the hot spot temperature, the ignition threshold, and the subsequent burn propagation. The net influence of mass ablation on the ignition threshold is regulated by a dimensionless parameter that depends upon the temperature of the dense fuel. As a consequence, the ignition threshold is sensitive to any mechanism that heats the dense fuel, such as neutrons or radiation emitted from the hot spot. These predictions are confirmed using radiation-hydrodynamic simulations for a series of capsules near ignition conditions. Results are presented from a series of simulations examining the susceptibility of the cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) instability to nonlinear processes in the context of direct-drive inertial confinement fusion experiments on the OMEGA laser facility. These form the basis for the second paper of this series [A. G. Seaton, L. Yin, R. Follett, B. J. Albright, and A. Le, "Cross-beam energy transfer in direct-drive ICF. II. Theory and simulation of mitigation through increased laser bandwidth," Phys. Plasmas 29, 042707 (2022)], where we examine the efficacy of increases in laser bandwidth at suppressing CBET. We choose laser and plasma conditions for the simulations that are favorable to CBET and promote nonlinearity. Through a comparison of outputs from the particle-in-cell code vector particle in cell (VPIC) and the linearized fluid code laser-plasma simulation environment (LPSE), a series of nonlinear effects have been identified in the kinetic simulations that include particle trapping, the two-ion wave decay, and ion-acoustic wave self-focusing. These effects produce time-dependent energy transfer, in contrast to the linearized fluid simulations in which a steady state is reached after an initial transient. Ion trapping is shown to allow for increased energy transfer relative to fluid simulations, with the remaining nonlinear processes acting to reduce the energy transfer. Nonlinear dynamics is contrasted for low- and high-intensity beams as well as between speckled and planar beams. For the parameters under consideration, beam profile has a significant effect on nonlinear dynamics, though the greatest sensitivity is to beam intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-yield implosions on the National Ignition Facility rely on maintaining low entropy in the deuterium–tritium fuel, quantified by its adiabat, in order to efficiently couple energy to the hot spot through high compression of the fuel layer. We present very-high-resolution xRAGE simulation results that study the impacts of interfacial mixing and the jetting of materials due to surface defects, defects on internal interfaces, voids, and engineering features on fuel layer compression. Defects and voids are typically neglected in implosion simulations due to their small size and three-dimensional geometry. Our results showed that supersonic jets of material arise through weak spots in the shell at peak implosion velocity that prevent uniform compression of the fuel layer even when they do not introduce contaminant into the hot spot. This occurs despite maintaining low fuel entropy, since the formation of the weak spots involves nonradial displacement of fuel mass. In contrast, simulations show that fuel–ablator mixing due to interfacial instabilities has a much smaller impact on compression. We show that defects on interior interfaces of plastic capsules decrease compression by 15% to 25% and interfacial mixing between the ablator and fuel decreases compression by less than 1% for implosions with plastic or high-density carbon (HDC) ablators. For low adiabat implosions, the impact of jetting seeded by the support tent can also decrease the compression by 25%. We demonstrate that the inclusion of interior defects in simulations can explain the inferred compression in two fielded plastic capsule implosions and that the inclusion of voids, for which available characterization has large uncertainties, in simulations of HDC capsule implosions has a qualitatively consistent impact. This mechanism offers a potential explanation for persistently overestimated fuel compression in design simulations of layered implosions on the National Ignition Facility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The response of the cross-beam energy transfer instability (CBET) to laser bandwidth is investigated through a combination of theory and simulation. Existing linear theory is generalized to treat broadband lasers, demonstrating that CBET is most effectively suppressed when the bandwidth exceeds the ion-acoustic wave (IAW) frequency. It is shown that for such bandwidths, reverse (seed to pump) transfer becomes possible, which reduces the net energy transfer rapidly as bandwidth is increased. The CBET gain exponent in this regime scales with bandwidth (Δ ω) as Δ ω − 3 for Gaussian or Lorentzian laser spectra with different scalings possible for other spectra. Comparison of our theory with linearized fluid and particle-in-cell simulations, performed with the laser-plasma simulation environment (LPSE) and vector particle in cell (VPIC) codes, respectively, finds that the model is accurate in the absence of nonlinear processes. However, linear analysis also finds that the IAW energy density scales as Δ ω − 1 , implying that nonlinear effects may be more difficult to control than the CBET scaling would suggest. Indeed, nonlinear effects are found to be present in VPIC simulations with high-intensity lasers, despite minimal apparent CBET. Nonlinear processes in the VPIC cases include particle trapping, the two-ion wave decay, and ion wave self-focusing. In some high intensity VPIC cases, these effects lead to net energy transfer from seed to pump and increases to backscatter stimulated Brillouin scattering reflectivities. Finally, for a given bandwidth, we show that improved control of nonlinear processes can be achieved via smoothing by spectral dispersion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In inertial confinement fusion, deuterium–tritium (DT) fuel is brought to densities and temperatures where fusion ignition occurs. However, mixing of the ablator material into the fuel may prevent ignition by diluting and cooling the fuel. MARBLE experiments at the National Ignition Facility provide new insight into how mixing affects thermonuclear burn. These experiments use laser-driven capsules containing deuterated plastic foam and tritium gas. Embedded within the foam are voids of known sizes and locations, which control the degree of heterogeneity of the fuel. Initially, the reactants are separated, with tritium concentrated in the voids and deuterium in the foam. During the implosion, mixing occurs between the foam and gas materials, leading to DT fusion reactions in the mixed region. Here, it is shown that by measuring the ratios of DT and deuterium–deuterium neutron yields for different macropore sizes and gas compositions, the effects of mix heterogeneity on thermonuclear burn may be quantified, supporting an improved understanding of these effects. Rayleigh–Taylor (R–T) instability between plasma species is examined in a kinetic test and near-inertial confinement fusion (ICF) regimes. A transport approximation to the plasma species kinetics is used to represent viscosity and species mass transport within a hydrodynamic fluid code (xRage). R–T simulation results are compared in a kinetic test regime with a fully kinetic particle-in-cell approach [vectorized particle-in-cell (VPIC)] and with an analytic model for the growth rate of R–T instability. Single-mode growth rates from both codes and the analytic model are in reasonable agreement over a range of initial wavelengths including the wavenumber of maximum growth rate. Both codes exhibit similar diffusive mixing fronts. Small code-to-code differences arise from the kinetics, while simulation-analytic model differences arise from several sources dominated by the choice of gradients establishing the hydrostatic equilibrium initial conditions. After demonstrating code agreement in the kinetic test regime, which is practically accessible to the VPIC code, then the xRage code, with the fluid plasma transport approximation, is applied to single mode R–T instability under deceleration conditions closer to an ICF implosion, approximated with a carbon (C) shell imploding on a deuterium (D) fuel. The analytic wavelength of maximum instability is limited by the kinetics, primarily in the viscosity, and is found to be ≈ 10 μ m for an ion temperature near 1 keV at this C–D interface, with the most unstable wavelength increasing as temperature increases. The analytic viscous model agrees with simulation results over a range of initial perturbation wavelengths, provided the simulation results are analyzed over a sufficiently short duration (⪅ 0.2 ns in this case). Details of the fluid structure evolution during this R–T deceleration are compared between the inviscid Euler equations and cases, which include plasma transport over a range in initial wavelengths and initial perturbation amplitudes. The inviscid Euler solutions show a grid-dependent cascade to smaller scale structures often seen in the R–T instability, while simulations with plasma transport in this deceleration regime develop a single vortex roll-up, as the plasma transport smoothes all hydrodynamic fluid structures smaller than several micrometers. This leads to a grid-converged transient solution for the R–T instability when kinetic effects are included in the simulations, and thus represents a direct numerical simulation of the thermal ions during R–T unstable mixing in ICF relevant conditions. Thomson scattering is used to detect the spectra of Langmuir waves driven through the backward stimulated Raman scattering process in a diffraction limited laser focal spot. Measured Langmuir wave spectral frequencies are found to vary in time and have broadened spectral power, consistent with a nonlinear frequency shift of the driven Langmuir wave due to electron-trapping. Broadening of the Langmuir wave spectral power is observed to decrease in time, consistent with measured variations in the frequency shift of the driven Langmuir waves. Furthermore, the observed spectral broadening is consistent with the temporally short (ps), bursty nature of backward stimulated Raman scattered light observed in simulations that cannot be resolved by the Thomson scattering diagnostic. Comparison of the broadened spectrum with time integrated spectra from two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations shows favorable comparison in the broadened spectral widths, supporting the supposition of electron-trapping induced, nonlinear shifting of daughter Langmuir wave frequencies. The performance of direct-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions relies critically on the coupling of laser energy to the target plasma. Cross-beam energy transfer (CBET), the resonant exchange of energy between intersecting laser beams mediated by ponderomotively driven ion-acoustic waves (IAWs), inhibits this coupling by scattering light into unwanted directions. The variety of beam intersection angles and varying plasma conditions in an implosion results in IAWs with a range of phase velocities. Here, we show that CBET saturates through a resonance detuning that depends on the IAW phase velocity and that results from trapping-induced modifications to the ion distribution functions. For smaller phase velocities, the modifications to the distribution functions can rapidly thermalize in the presence of mid-Z ions, leading to a blueshift in the resonant frequency. For larger phase velocities, the modifications can persist, leading to a redshift in the resonant frequency. Ultimately, these results may reveal pathways toward CBET mitigation and inform reduced models for radiation hydrodynamics codes to improve their predictive capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Converting and using the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to deliver 527 nm light instead of its current 351 nm would allow the laser to deliver more energy and power to ignition targets. We update previous 527 nm target design work to reflect more contemporary target designs using high-density carbon capsules and low density helium gas filled Hohlraums. We extend single shell capsule designs based on current experimental results to higher energy and power and also explore double shell capsules, both driven by green light. These studies were completed using detailed pulse shapes found for targets that converged with acceptable 2D implosion symmetries and then used the Lava Lamp II code to confirm their feasibility at NIF. A 1.2× dimensional scaleup of one tuned NIF target at the limit of its current 351 nm capabilities and shot 170827 uses 3.3 MJ, at the limit of the current NIF's 527 nm capability. With the less-structured pulse of a double shell target, 3.7 MJ could be delivered by the laser. Our LPI calculations do not preclude operation at 527 nm, particularly for low fill Hohlraums, and suggest that the stimulated Raman backscatter may be no worse than the small quantities seen in 170827; stimulated forward Raman scattering may be present. If Stimulated Brillouin Scattering is too great, the much greater laser bandwidth available at 527 nm could be used to decrease backscatter. These larger targets with higher energy and power may offer a better chance of achieving ignition with only modest changes to the NIF laser. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Particle-in-cell simulations of cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) between multi-speckled beams reveal a potentially prominent energy loss from forward stimulated Raman scattering (FSRS) in the amplified seed beam [Yin et al., Phys. Plasmas 26, 082708 (2019)]. In this work, an intensity scan is used to examine this energy loss in the CBET-amplified seed beam at intensities of a few times 1014 W/cm2. Electron tracers demonstrate both the trapping in the electron plasma waves that is sustained over multiple speckles and the subsequent acceleration to velocities well beyond the phase velocity. Motivated by expanding our understanding of this energy loss mechanism, we isolate the FSRS density dependence by using a 2 × 10 14 W/cm2 pulse to scan densities between 0.06 n c r and 0.12 n c r ; a spectral analysis characterizes the energy losses from scattering with the changing densities. At saturation, both greater beam attenuation is measured at the laser frequency and larger scattering FSRS angles are observed as density increases, along with a rapid transition to primarily backscatter SRS between 0.10 n c r and 0.12 n c r , earlier than predicted by linear theory. Density gradients are shown to effectively mitigate oblique FSRS and beam energy losses in the two lower density cases, whereas 0 ° forward scattering is primarily suppressed in the higher density cases. Finally returning to the two-beam CBET system of interest, the interplay and mitigation of the secondary instabilities at larger domain and beam spatial scales are discussed, here also examining backward stimulated Brillouin scattering. An experimental and simulation study of warm dense carbon foams at ambient density (ne ∼ 1021 cm−3) is presented. This study of isochorically heated foams is motivated by their potential application in carbon-atmosphere white-dwarf envelopes, where there are modeling uncertainties due to the equation of state. The foams are heated on an approximately picosecond time scale with a laser-accelerated proton beam. The cooling and expansion of the heated foams can be modeled with appropriately initialized radiation-hydrodynamics codes; xRAGE code is used in this work. The primary experimental diagnostic is the streaked optical pyrometer, which images a narrow band of radiation from the rear surface of the heated material. Presented are xRAGE modeling results for both solid aluminum targets and carbonized resorcinol-formaldehyde foam targets, showing that the foam appears to cool slowly on the pyrometer because of partial transparency. So that simulations of cooling foam are processed properly, it is necessary to account for finite optical depth in the photosphere calculation, and the methods for performing that calculation are presented in depth. The engineered macro-pore foam provides a new way to study thermonuclear burn physics by utilizing capsules containing deuterated (D) foam and filling tritium (T) gas in the engineered macro-pores. The implosion of a thermonuclear capsule filled with an engineered macro-pore foam will be complex due to the interaction of a shock wave with the engineered macro-pores. It is our goal to quantify how substantially complex foam structures affect the shape of shock and bulk shock speed. A cylinder-shape shock tube experiment has been designed and performed at the Omega Laser Facility. In order to examine how a foam structure will affect shock propagation, we performed several tests varying (1) engineered macro-pore size, (2) average foam density, and (3) with/without neopentane (C5H12) gas. X-ray radiographic data indicate that shock speed through engineered macro-pore foams depends strongly on average foam density and less on pore size. Experimental shock propagation data helped guide two numerical simulation approaches: (1) a 2D simulation with homogenizing foams rather than explicitly simulating engineered macro-pores and (2) a 2D toroidal-pore approximation adopting a toroidal-tube geometry to model engineered macro-pores. The Marble experimental platform at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) was developed to quantify the influence of heterogeneous mix on fusion burn. The platform utilizes a plastic capsule filled with a deuterated plastic foam of controlled coarseness, with tritium gas filling the voids in the foam. The capsule implosion is driven with x rays generated in an NIF Hohlraum in which the time-dependent symmetry of the implosion can be controlled via dynamic beam phasing. Importantly, the Hohlraum drive conditions can be understood via integrated 2D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, and capsule implosions can be reliably calculated. After several years of development and experimentation, the NIF Marble platform has become successful and has produced important experimental results. The experimental results, which will be presented in a future publication by the LANL Marble team, provide the first definitive examination of the influence of heterogeneous mix on thermonuclear burn. The MARBLE project is a novel inertial confinement fusion platform for studying the development of atomic mixing and temperature equilibration in inertial confinement fusion implosions and their impact on thermonuclear burn. Experiments involve the laser-driven implosion of capsules filled with deuterated engineered foams whose pores are filled with a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and tritium. By varying the size of the foam pores, we can study the timescale of the development of atomic mix relative to the development of thermal equilibrium between species. In contrast, previous separated reactant experiments have only provided information on the total amount of mix mass. We report on the series of MARBLE experiments [first reported in Haines et al., Nat. Commun. 11, 544 (2020)] performed on the University of Rochester's OMEGA laser facility and detailed and highly resolved three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the implosions. In both the experimental and simulation results, we observe that the reactants do not achieve thermal equilibrium during the course of the implosion except in atomically mixed regions—i.e., that atomic mixing develops faster than thermal equilibration between species. Several approaches to Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF), including double-shell, pushered-single-shell, and the Revolver designs, have fuel surrounded by pushers made from high-Z materials. An advantage of these designs is that radiation emitted by the hot fuel will be absorbed and re-radiated into the fuel to reduce cooling. This process is referred to as radiation-trapping, and it lowers the fuel temperature required for ignition. To elucidate the physics of radiation trapping, a simplified model comprising a set of coupled differential equations has been developed to model the arbitrary time-dependent wall temperature from the Hammer and Rosen solution [J. H. Hammer and M. D. Rosen, Phys. Plasmas 10, 1829 (2003)] to a Marshak wave. The derivation of the model and a set of analytical power-law solutions will be presented. Particle-in-cell simulations of laser- ion acceleration demonstrate marked discrepancies in the acceleration experienced by the different ion species in complex target compositions, especially when the target becomes relativistically transparent to the pulse during irradiation. Beginning with proton contaminants in a carbon target, we show how the higher charge-to-mass ratio of the protons results in species stratification and late-time suppression of the carbon acceleration. The target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) primarily experienced by the protons can be exploited to mitigate this tamping by using a shaped rear surface of the target, leaving the break-out afterburner-driven carbons to accelerate close to the laser axis and then experience less tamping during a late-time TNSA phase. We then explore preferentially accelerating the lighter species in a mixed composition target, particularly focusing on deuteron beam applications. We examine three different target compositions with the same areal electron density, CD2, CH2, and 7LiD, and propose an alternative shaping of the rear surface of 7LiD to increase the number of high-energy deuterons in the beam. The nonlinear saturation of crossed-beam energy transfer (CBET) for multispeckled laser beams crossing at arbitrary angles is examined using vector particle-in-cell simulations. CBET is found to saturate on fast (∼10s of picosecond) time scales involving ion trapping and excitation of oblique forward stimulated Raman scattering (FSRS). Ion trapping reduces wave damping and speckle interaction increases wave coherence length, together enhancing energy transfer; ion acoustic wave (IAW) breakup in the direction transverse to the wavenumber increases wave damping and contributes to CBET saturation. The seed beam can become unstable to oblique FSRS, which leads to beam deflection at a large angle and a frequency downshift (by the plasma frequency). FSRS saturates on fast ∼picosecond time scales by electron plasma wave self-focusing, leading to enhanced side-loss hot electrons with energy exceeding 300 keV. This may contribute to fuel preheat but FSRS can be mitigated by the presence of a density gradient. Such growth of FSRS contributes to the saturation of CBET. Scaling simulations show that CBET, as well as FSRS and hot electrons, increases with beam average intensity, beam diameter, and crossing area, but that CBET is limited by the excitation of FSRS and IAW breakups in addition to pump depletion. FSRS deflects the seed beam energy by greater than 40% of the incident beam energy and puts a few percent of the incident beam energy into hot electrons. FSRS limits the efficacy of CBET for symmetry tuning at late stages in the implosion and may account for a large portion of the "missing energy" in implosions that use gas-filled hohlraums. The physics of mixing in plasmas is of fundamental importance to inertial confinement fusion and high energy density laboratory experiments. Two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) particle-in-cell simulations with a binary collision model are used to explore kinetic effects arising during the mixing of plasma media. The applicability of the one-dimensional (1D) ambipolarity condition is evaluated in 2D and 3D simulations of a plasma interface with a sinusoidal perturbation. The 1D ambipolarity condition is found to remain valid in 2D and 3D, as electrons and ions flow together required for J = 0. Simulations of perturbed interfaces show that diffusion-induced total pressure imbalance and hydroflows flatten fine interface structures and drive rapid atomic mix. The atomic mix rate from a structured interface is faster than the ∼ t scaling obtained from 1D theory in the small-Knudsen-number limit. Plasma kinetic effects inhibit the growth of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability at small wavelengths and result in a nonmonotonic growth rate scaling with wavenumber k with a maximum at a low k value, much different from Agk (where A is the Atwood number and g is the gravitational constant) as expected in the absence of plasma kinetic effects. Simulations under plasma conditions relevant to MARBLE separated-reactant experiments on Omega and the NIF show kinetic modification of DT fusion reaction rates. With non-Maxwellian distributions and relative drifts between D and T ions, DT reactivity is higher than that inferred from rates using stationary Maxwellian distributions. Double shell capsules are predicted to ignite and burn at relatively low temperature (∼3 keV) via volume ignition and are a potential low-convergence path to substantial α-heating and possibly ignition at the National Ignition Facility. Double shells consist of a dense, high-Z pusher, which first shock heats and then performs work due to changes in pressure and volume (PdV work) on deuterium-tritium gas, bringing the entire fuel volume to high pressure thermonuclear conditions near implosion stagnation. The high-Z pusher is accelerated via a shock and subsequent compression of an intervening foam cushion by an ablatively driven low-Z outer shell. A broad capsule design parameter space exists due to the inherent flexibility of potential materials for the outer and inner shells and foam cushion. This is narrowed down by design physics choices and the ability to fabricate and assemble the separate pieces forming a double shell capsule. We describe the key physics for good double shell performance, the trade-offs in various design choices, and the challenges for capsule fabrication. We examine the relativistic Buneman instability in systems relevant to high-intensity laser-plasma interactions under conditions of relativistically-induced transparency, as this instability can generate large-amplitude electrostatic waves at low frequencies that are pertinent to ion dynamics in these systems. Ion flows are shown to significantly alter the range of unstable wave numbers and to increase the phase velocities of the unstable modes; we particularly highlight the relativistic effects from both the ion and electron (with transverse motion) populations. These findings are related to the mode structure seen in particle-in-cell simulation results of a short-pulse laser breaking through an initially opaque target with the onset of relativistic transparency. Additionally, driving mechanisms from free energy present in density and velocity gradients are shown to be capable of significantly enhancing the growth rates, and these instabilities furthermore extend the breadth of the unstable wave number range. Lastly, we discuss how the transverse self-generated magnetic fields characteristic of short-pulse interactions can potentially constrain the unstable wave numbers in a non-trivial manner. The classical transport theory based on Chapman-Enskog methods provides self-consistent approximations for the kinetic flux of mass, heat, and momentum in a fluid limit characterized with a small Knudsen number. The species mass fluxes relative to the center of mass, or “diffusive fluxes,” are expressed as functions of known gradient quantities with kinetic coefficients evaluated using similar analyses for mixtures of gases or plasma components. The sum over species of the diffusive mass fluxes is constrained to be zero in the Lagrange frame, and thus results in a non-zero molar flux leading to a pressure perturbation. At an interface between two species initially in pressure equilibrium, the pressure perturbation driven by the diffusive molar flux induces a center of mass velocity directed from the species of greater atomic mass towards the lighter atomic mass species. As the ratio of the species particle masses increases, this center of mass velocity carries an increasingly greater portion of the mass across the interface and for a particle mass ratio greater than about two, the center of mass velocity carries more mass than the gradient driven diffusion flux. Early time transients across an interface between two species in a 1D plasma regime and initially in equilibrium are compared using three methods; a fluid code with closure in a classical transport approximation, a particle in cell simulation, and an implicit Fokker-Planck solver for the particle distribution functions. The early time transient phenomenology is shown to be similar in each of the computational simulation methods, including a pressure perturbation associated with the stationary “induced” component of the center of mass velocity which decays to pressure equilibrium during diffusion. At early times, the diffusive process generates pressure and velocity waves which propagate outward from the interface and are required to maintain momentum conservation. The energy in the outgoing waves dissipates as heat in viscous regions, and it is hypothesized that these diffusion driven waves may sustain fluctuations in less viscid finite domains after reflections from the boundaries. These fluid dynamic phenomena are similar in gases or plasmas and occur in flow transients with a moderate Knudsen number. The analysis and simulation results show how the kinetic flux, represented in the fluid transport closure, directly modifies the mass averaged flow described with the Euler equations. The loss of fuel ions in the Gamow peak and other kinetic effects related to the a particles during ignition, run-away burn, and disassembly stages of an inertial confinement fusion D-T capsule are investigated with a quasi-1D hybrid volume ignition model that includes kinetic ions, fluid electrons, Planckian radiation photons, and a metallic pusher. The fuel ion loss due to the Knudsen effect at the fuel-pusher interface is accounted for by a local-loss model by Molvig et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 095001 (2012)] with an albedo model for ions returning from the pusher wall. The tail refilling and relaxation of the fuel ion distribution are captured with a nonlinear Fokker-Planck solver. Alpha heating of the fuel ions is modeled kinetically while simple models for finite alpha range and electron heating are used. This dynamical model is benchmarked with a 3 T hydrodynamic burn model employing similar assumptions. For an energetic pusher (~40 kJ) that compresses the fuel to an areal density of ~1.07g/cm² at ignition, the simulation shows that the Knudsen effect can substantially limit ion temperature rise in runaway burn. While the final yield decreases modestly from kinetic effects of the a particles, large reduction of the fuel reactivity during ignition and runaway burn may require a higher Knudsen loss rate compared to the rise time of the temperatures above ~25 keV when the broad D-T Gamow peak merges into the bulk Maxwellian distribution. Mixing at interfaces in dense plasma media is a problem central to inertial confinement fusion and high energy density laboratory experiments. In this work, collisional particle-in-cell simulations are used to explore kinetic effects arising during the mixing of unmagnetized plasma media. Comparisons are made to the results of recent analytical theory in the small Knudsen number limit and while the bulk mixing properties of interfaces are in general agreement, some differences arise. In particular, "super-diffusive" behavior, large diffusion velocity, and large Knudsen number are observed in the low density regions of the species mixing fronts during the early evolution of a sharp interface prior to the transition to a slow diffusive process in the small-Knudsen-number limit predicted by analytical theory. Two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in laser speckle geometry have been analyzed to evaluate the relative importance of competing nonlinear processes in the evolution and saturation of SBS. It is found that ion-trapping-induced wavefront bowing and breakup of ion acoustic waves (IAW) and the associated side-loss of trapped ions dominate electron-trapping-induced IAW wavefront bowing and breakup, as well as the two-ionwave decay instability over a range of ZTe=Ti conditions and incident laser intensities. In the simulations, the latter instability does not govern the nonlinear saturation of SBS; however, evidence of two-ion-wave decay is seen, appearing as a modulation of the ion acoustic wavefronts. This modulation is periodic in the laser polarization plane, anti-symmetric across the speckle axis, and of a wavenumber matching that of the incident laser pulse. A simple analytic model is provided for how spatial "imprinting" from a high frequency inhomogeneity (in this case, the density modulation from the laser) in an unstable system with continuum eigenmodes can selectively amplify modes with wavenumbers that match that of the inhomogeneity. "Reduced" (i.e., simplified or approximate) ion-kinetic (RIK) models in radiation-hydrodynamic simulations permit a useful description of inertial-confinement-fusion (ICF) implosions where kinetic deviations from hydrodynamic behavior are important. For implosions in or near the kinetic regime (i.e., when ion mean free paths are comparable to the capsule size), simulations using a RIK model give a detailed picture of the time- and space-dependent structure of imploding capsules, allow an assessment of the relative importance of various kinetic processes during the implosion, enable explanations of past and current observations, and permit predictions of the results of future experiments. The RIK simulation method described here uses moment-based reduced kinetic models for transport of mass, momentum, and energy by long-mean-free-path ions, a model for the decrease of fusion reactivity owing to the associated modification of the ion distribution function, and a model of hydrodynamic turbulent mixing. The transport models are based on local gradientdiffusion approximations for the transport of moments of the ion distribution functions, with coefficients to impose flux limiting or account for transport modification. After calibration against a reference set of ICF implosions spanning the hydrodynamic-to-kinetic transition, the method has useful, quantifiable predictive ability over a broad range of capsule parameter space. Calibrated RIK simulations show that an important contributor to ion species separation in ICF capsule implosions is the preferential flux of longer-mean-free-path species out of the fuel and into the shell, leaving the fuel relatively enriched in species with shorter mean free paths. Also, the transport of ion thermal energy is enhanced in the kinetic regime, causing the fuel region to have a more uniform, lower ion temperature, extending over a larger volume, than implied by clean simulations. We expect that the success of our simple approach will motivate continued theoretical research into the development of first-principles-based, comprehensive, self-consistent, yet useable models of kinetic multispecies ion behavior in ICF plasmas. We present a detailed study of the use of a non-parallel, inhomogeneous magnetic field spectrometer for the investigation of laser-accelerated ion beams. Employing a wedged yoke design, we demonstrate the feasibility of an in-situ self-calibration technique of the non-uniform magnetic field and show that high-precision measurements of ion energies are possible in a wide-angle configuration. We also discuss the implications of a stacked detector system for unambiguous identification of different ion species present in the ion beam and explore the feasibility of detection of high energy particles beyond 100 MeV/amu in radiation harsh environments. Efficient coupling of laser energy into hohlraum targets is important for indirect drive ignition. Laser-plasma instabilities can reduce coupling, reduce symmetry, and cause preheat. We consider the effects of an external magnetic field on laser-energy coupling in hohlraum targets. Experiments were performed at the Omega Laser Facility using low-Z gas-filled hohlraum targets which were placed in a magnetic coil with Bz ≤ 7.5-T. We found that an external field Bz = 7.5-T aligned along the hohlraum axis results in up to a 50% increase in plasma temperature as measured by Thomson scattering. The experiments were modeled using the 2-D magnetohydrodynamics package in HYDRA and were found to be in good agreement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In laser driven fusion and high energy density physics experiments, one often encounters a kkD range of 0.15 < kkD < 0.5, where stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is active (k is the initial electron plasma wave number and kD is the Debye length). Using particle-in-cell simulations, the SRS reflectivity is found to scale as ~ (kkD)-4 for kkD S 0.3 where electron trapping effects dominate SRS saturation; the reflectivity scaling deviates from the above for kkD < 0.3 when Langmuir decay instability (LDI) is present. The SRS risk is shown to be highest for kkD between 0.2 and 0.3. SRS re-scattering processes are found to be unimportant under conditions relevant to ignition experiments at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Large-scale simulations of the hohlraum plasma show that the SRS wavelength spectrum peaks below 600 nm, consistent with most measured NIF spectra, and that nonlinear trapping in the presence of plasma gradients determines the SRS spectral peak. Collisional effects on SRS, stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), LDI, and re-scatter, together with three dimensional effects, are examined. Effects of collisions are found to include de-trapping as well as cross-speckle electron temperature variation from collisional heating, the latter of which reduces gain, introduces a positive frequency shift that counters the trapping-induced negative frequency shift, and affects SRS and SBS saturation. Bowing and breakup of ion-acoustic wavefronts saturate SBS and cause a dramatic, sharp decrease in SBS reflectivity. Mitigation of SRS and SBS in the strongly nonlinear trapping regime is discussed. Recent work by Molvig et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 095001 (2012)] examined how fusion reactivity may be reduced from losses of fast ions in finite assemblies of fuel. In this paper, this problem is revisited with the addition of an asymptotic boundary-layer treatment of ion kinetic losses. This boundary solution, reminiscent of the classical Milne problem from linear transport theory, obtains a free-streaming limit of fast ion losses near the boundary, where the diffusion approximation is invalid. Thermonuclear reaction rates have been obtained for the ion distribution functions predicted by this improved model. It is found that while Molvig's 'Knudsen distribution function' bounds from above the magnitude of the reactivity reduction, this more accurate treatment leads to less dramatic losses of tail ions and associated reduction of thermonuclear reaction rates for finite fuel volumes. Experimental data are presented for laser-driven carbon C6+ ion-acceleration, verifying 2D-PIC studies for multi-species targets in the Break-Out Afterburner regime. With Trident's ultra-high contrast at relativistic intensities of 5 × 1020 W/cm2 and nm-scale diamond targets, acceleration of carbon ions has been optimized by using target laser-preheating for removal of surface proton contaminants. Using a high-resolution wide angle spectrometer, carbon C6+ ion energies exceeding 1 GeV or 83 MeV/amu have been measured, which is a 40% increase in maximum ion energy over uncleaned targets. In inertial confinement fusion experiments, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) occurs when electron density fluctuations are amplified resonantly by the incident laser beams and scattered light. These beams comprise several thousands of individual laser speckles. We have found in single-speckle studies that electron trapping lowers the threshold intensity for SRS onset to a value below that from linear theory and enhances scattering. The trapping-induced plasma-wave frequency shift leads to wave-front bowing and filamentation processes that saturate SRS and limit scattering within a speckle. With large-scale simulations, we have now examined how laser speckles interact with one another through three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of two interacting speckles and 2D PIC simulations of ensembles of laser speckles (hundreds of speckles). Our work shows that kinetic trapping physics also governs the onset and saturation of SRS in ensembles of speckles. Speckles interact in a manner that is nonlinear and nonlocal: An intense speckle can destabilize its neighbors through transport of hot electrons and SRS waves, resulting in enhanced emission of particles and waves that, in turn, act upon the original speckle. In this manner, speckles below threshold when in isolation can be above the threshold in multi-speckled beams under conditions for laser-driven fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and ensembles of speckles are thus found to collectively lower the SRS onset threshold. Simulations of the hohlraum interior where laser beams overlap show that multi-speckled laser beams at low average intensity (a few times 1014 W/cm2) have correspondingly lower thresholds for enhanced SRS and that the sub-ps bursts of SRS saturate through trapping induced nonlinearities. Because of electron trapping effects, SRS reflectivity grows slowly with average laser intensity. While SRS reflectivity saturates under NIF conditions, SRS hot electron energy increases with increasing laser intensity and may contribute to capsule preheat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kinetic simulations of break-out-afterburner (BOA) ion acceleration from nm-scale targets are examined in a longer pulse length regime than studied previously. It is shown that when the target becomes relativistically transparent to the laser, an epoch of dramatic acceleration of ions occurs that lasts until the electron density in the expanding target reduces to the critical density in the non-relativistic limit. For given laser parameters, the optimal target thickness yielding the highest maximum ion energy is one in which this time window for ion acceleration overlaps with the intensity peak of the laser pulse. A simple analytic model of relativistically induced transparency is presented for plasma expansion at the time-evolving sound speed, from which these times may be estimated. A double-foil target is proposed for laser ion acceleration with thin targets to take advantage of high efficiency of such targets while avoiding beam degradation in late stage of acceleration. Laser heating of electrons co-moving with the ion beam is stopped by the second foil. It is found that the second foil can also modify and substantially improve the spectral and spatial properties of the ion beam and reduce the temperature of the co-moving electrons, leading to better preservation of the beam quality. In recent experiments at the Trident laser facility, quasi-monoenergetic ion beams have been obtained from the interaction of an ultraintense, circularly polarized laser with a diamond-like carbon target of nm-scale thickness under conditions of ultrahigh laser pulse contrast. Kinetic simulations of this experiment under realistic laser and plasma conditions show that relativistic transparency occurs before significant radiation pressure acceleration and that the main ion acceleration occurs after the onset of relativistic transparency. Associated with this transition are a period of intense ion acceleration and the generation of a new class of ion solitons that naturally give rise to quasi-monoenergetic ion beams. An analytic theory has been derived for the properties of these solitons that reproduces the behavior observed in kinetic simulations and the experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present large scale 3D particle-in-cell simulations to examine particle energization in magnetic reconnection of relativistic electron-positron (pair) plasmas. The initial configuration is set up as a relativistic Harris equilibrium without a guide field. These simulations are large enough to accommodate a sufficient number of tearing and kink modes. Contrary to the non-relativistic limit, the linear tearing instability is faster than the linear kink instability, at least in our specific parameters. We find that the magnetic energy dissipation is first facilitated by the tearing instability and followed by the secondary kink instability. Particles are mostly energized inside the magnetic islands during the tearing stage due to the spatially varying electric fields produced by the outflows from reconnection. Secondary kink instability leads to additional particle acceleration. Accelerated particles are, however, observed to be thermalized quickly. The large amplitude of the vertical magnetic field resulting from the tearing modes by the secondary kink modes further help thermalizing the non-thermal particles generated from the secondary kink instability. To optimize the coupling to indirect drive targets in the National Ignition Campaign (NIC) at the National Ignition Facility [E. Moses et al., Phys. Plasmas 16, 041006 (2009)], a model of stimulated scattering produced by multiple laser beams is used. The model has shown that scatter of the 351 nm beams can be significantly enhanced over single beam predictions in ignition relevant targets by the interaction of the multiple crossing beams with a millimeter scale length, 2.5 keV, 0.02-0.05 × critical density, plasma. The model uses a suite of simulation capabilities and its key aspects are benchmarked with experiments at smaller laser facilities. The model has also influenced the design of the initial targets used for NIC by showing that both the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) can be reduced by the reduction of the plasma density in the beam intersection volume that is caused by an increase in the diameter of the laser entrance hole (LEH). In this model, a linear wave response leads to a small gain exponent produced by each crossing quad of beams (<∼1 per quad) which amplifies the scattering that originates in the target interior where the individual beams are separated and crosses many or all other beams near the LEH as it exits the target. As a result all 23 crossing quads of beams produce a total gain exponent of several or greater for seeds of light with wavelengths in the range that is expected for scattering from the interior (480 to 580 nm for SRS). This means that in the absence of wave saturation, the overall multi-beam scatter will be significantly larger than the expectations for single beams. The potential for non-linear saturation of the Langmuir waves amplifying SRS light is also analyzed with a two dimensional, vectorized, particle in cell code (2D VPIC) that is benchmarked by amplification experiments in a plasma with normalized parameters similar to ignition targets. The physics of cumulative scattering by multiple crossing beams that simultaneously amplify the same SBS light wave is further demonstrated in experiments that benchmark the linear models for the ion waves amplifying SBS. The expectation from this model and its experimental benchmarks is shown to be consistent with observations of stimulated Raman scatter in the first series of energetic experiments with ignition targets, confirming the importance of the multi-beam scattering model for optimizing coupling. A novel ion wide angle spectrometer (iWASP) has been developed, which is capable of measuring angularly resolved energy distributions of protons and a second ion species, such as carbon C6 +, simultaneously. The energy resolution for protons and carbon ions is better than 10% at ∼50 MeV/nucleon and thus suitable for the study of novel laser-ion acceleration schemes aiming for ultrahigh particle energies. A wedged magnet design enables an acceptance angle of 30°(∼524 mrad) and high angular accuracy in the μrad range. The influence of binary Coulomb collisions on trapped particle nonlinearities related to stimulated Raman scatter (SRS) in a single laser speckle is examined using one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Binary Coulomb collisions are incorporated using a numerical particle-pairing algorithm that reproduces a collision integral of the Landau form. The onset of nonlinearly enhanced levels of SRS reflectivity is shown to coincide with electron trapping in the daughter plasma wave and is sensitive to the collisional scattering rate. Relaxation of trapping-induced perturbations to the electron velocity distribution via collisional velocity space diffusion is predicted to have the largest effect on the onset of SRS when the amplitude of the daughter plasma wave is smallest, and trapping-induced perturbations to the electron velocity distribution function are also small. In the absence of higher dimensional detrapping mechanisms (e.g., electron side-loss), it is shown that the onset threshold for enhanced SRS reflectivity is determined predominantly by the parallel diffusion of trapped electrons scattering from bulk thermal electrons, and that for the conditions studied here, the contribution to detrapping from perpendicular diffusion is non-negligible. Additionally, inverse bremsstrahlung heating of the bulk electrons is shown to shift the daughter plasma wave spectrum upward along the Stoke's resonance to larger wave frequency and smaller wave number, changing the linear parametric coupling conditions to SRS backscatter as a function of time. The reduction in SRS reflectivity from binary Coulomb collisions is greatest for laser intensities near the collisionless onset threshold, ulimately leading to an increase in the onset threshold laser intensity for enhanced SRS reflectivity in the kinetic regime. Here, we report on the development of a novel high resolution and high dispersion Thomson parabola for simultaneously resolving protons and low-Z ions of more than 100 MeV/nucleon necessary to explore novel laser ion acceleration schemes. High electric and magnetic fields enable energy resolutions of ΔE/E < 5% at 100 MeV/nucleon and impede premature merging of different ion species at low energies on the detector plane. First results from laser driven ion acceleration experiments performed at the Trident Laser Facility demonstrate high resolution and superior species and charge state separation of this novel Thomson parabola for ion energies of more than 30 MeV/nucleon. The influence of Coulomb collisions on the dynamics of driven magnetic reconnection in geometry mimicking the Magnetic Reconnection eXperiment (MRX) [M. Yamada et al., Phys. Plasmas 4, 1936 (1997)] is investigated using two-dimensional (2D) fully kinetic simulations with a Monte Carlo treatment of the collision operator. For values of collisionality typical of MRX, the reconnection mechanism is shown to be a combination of collisionless effects, represented by off-diagonal terms in the electron stress tensor, and collisional momentum exchange between electrons and ions. The ratio of the reconnection electric field ER to the critical runaway field Ecrit provides a convenient measure of the relative importance of these two mechanisms. The structure of electron-scale reconnection layers in the presence of collisions is investigated in light of the previously reported [S. Dorfman et al., Phys. Plasmas 15, 102107 (2008)] discrepancy in the width of the electron reconnection layers between collisionless simulations and experimental observations. It is demonstrated that the width of the layer increases in the presence of collisions, but does not substantially deviate from its collisionless values, given by the electron crossing orbit width, unless ERcrit. Comparison with MRX observations demonstrates that the layer width in 2D simulations with Coulomb collisions is substantially smaller than the value observed in the low-density experiments with ER<=Ecrit, indicating that physical mechanisms beyond those included in the simulations control the structure of the electron layers in these experiments. Fully electromagnetic particle in cell simulations of nonlinear waves propagation and interaction are performed in two-dimensional plane geometry in magnetized plasma in ion cyclotron frequency range. A spectrum of fast magnetosonic wave modes with wave numbers parallel and perpendicular to the uniform equilibrium magnetic field is launched into plasma and the nonlinear dynamics of these waves is analyzed. Results show that the wave magnetic energy spectrum cascades to smaller scales. In the low frequency in the magnetohydrodynamic regime, the cascade is basically isotropic. Once entering the high frequency kinetic regime the cascade exhibits strong anisotropy, it extends to much smaller scales in direction perpendicular to the equilibrium magnetic field. The shape of the cascade is established after a few ion cyclotron periods and most of the energy in the cascade stays in the fast wave oscillations.
