Pd K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) probes different molecular orbitals and consequently the charge distribution in a series of bidentate diphosphine ligands (PP) Pd coordinating moieties (XX) complexes. A full interpretation of the Pd K-edge XANES data is presented.

The technique of density functional theory is employed to study the origin of the chemoselectivity of the palladium catalysts that contains bidentate phosphate ligands of ester, as well as polyketone. The analysis reveals that the electronic effects caused by increasing the bite angle of the diphosphine ligand leads to the stabilization of the intermediates in the reaction, as some ligands give polymer, instead of propionates as their major products.

A new methodology has been developed for the synthesis of highly substituted nitrogen heterocycles such as pyrazines and imidazoles starting from α-diketones using phosphine supported ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) as catalysts. Ruthenium nanoparticles Ru1-Ru4 supported with different phosphines such as dbdocphos, dppp, DPEphos, and Xantphos are screened, of which Ru1 and Ru4 are found to be the most active. Interestingly, aryl-substituted and alkyl-substituted α-diketones produced different products: namely, pyrazine and imidazoles, respectively. This reaction methodology has been applied to the synthesis of a key intermediate (2m) of the marine cytotoxic natural product Dragmacidin B and an estrogen receptor (2l). The mechanism and kinetics of the solvolysis of complexes of the type [(L-L)Pd(C(O)CH[sub 3])(S)][sup +][CF[sub 3]SO[sub 3]][sup -] (L-L = diphosphine ligand, S = solvent, CO, or donor atom in the ligand backbone) was studied by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy with the use of the ligands a-j: SPANphos (a), dtbpf (b), Xantphos (c), dippf (d), DPEphos (e), dtbpx (f), dppf (g), dppp (h), calix-6-diphosphite (j). Acetyl palladium complexes containing trans-coordinating ligands that resist cis coordination (SPANphos, dtbpf) showed no methanolysis. Trans complexes that can undergo isomerization to the cis analogue (Xantphos, dippf, DPEphos) showed methanolyis of the acyl group at a moderate rate. The reaction of [trans-(DPEphos)Pd(C(O)CH[sub 3])][sup +][CF[sub 3]SO[sub 3]][sup -] (2e) with methanol shows a large negative entropy of activation. Cis complexes underwent competing decarbonylation and methanolysis with the exception of 2j, [cis-(calix-diphosphite)Pd(C(O)CH[sub 3])(CD[sub 3]OD)][sup +][CF[sub 3]SO[sub 3]][sup -]. The calix-6-diphosphite complex showed a large positive entropy of activation. It is concluded that ester elimination from acylpalladium complexes with alcohols requires cis geometry of the acyl group and coordinating alcohol. The reductive elimination of methyl acetate is described as a migratory elimination or a 1,2-shift of the alkoxy group from palladium to the acyl carbon atom. Cis complexes with bulky ligands such as dtbpx undergo an extremely fast methanolysis. An increasing steric bulk of the ligand favors the formation of methyl propanoate relative to the insertion of ethene leading to formation of oligomers or polymers in the catalytic reaction of ethene, carbon monoxide, and methanol. Encapsulated transition metal catalysts are presented that are formed by templated self-assembly processes of simple building blocks such as porphyrins and pyridylphosphine and phosphite ligands, using selective metal-ligand interactions. These ligand assemblies coordinate to transition metals, leading to a new class of transition metal catalysts. The assembled catalyst systems were characterized using NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy and were identified under catalytic conditions using high-pressure infrared spectroscopy. Tris-3-pyridylphosphine binds three mesophenyl zinc(ll) porphyrin units and consequently forms an assembly with the phosphorus donor atom completely encapsulated. The encapsulated phosphines lead exclusively to monoligated transition metal complexes, and in the rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of 1 -octene the encapsulation of the catalysts resulted in a 10-fold increase in activity. In addition, the branched aldehyde was formed preferentially (I/b = 0.6), a selectivity that is highly unusual for this substrate, which is attributed to the encapsulation of the transition metal catalysts. An encapsulated rhodium catalyst based on ruthenium(ll) porphyrins and tris-meta-pyridyl phosphine resulted in an even larger selectivity for the branched product (I/b = 0.4). These encapsulated catalysts can be prepared easily, and various template ligands and porphyrins, such as tris-3-pyridyl phosphite and ruthenium(II) porphyrins, have been explored, leading to catalysts with different properties. The article analyzes the regioselective hydroformylation of internal alkenes by encapsulated rhadium complexes. The authors have shown that transition metal encapsulation using a straightforward templated ligand approach results in the formation of high-precision catalysts. The catalyst shows unprecedented high selectivity in the rhodium.

A series of bulky phosphines containing substituted biphenyl, 2-methylnaphthyl, or 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene moiety were prepared. They were used in the preparation of new monophosphine-palladium(0)-dvds complexes, which were employed as catalysts for the selective telomerization of 1,3-butadiene with methanol to obtain 1-methoxyocta-2,7-diene (1-MOD), the key intermediate in the Dow 1-octene process. Several ligands showed improved selectivity and yield compared to that of the benchmark ligand PPh3. Especially 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthen-4-yl-diphenylphosphine (4, "mono-xantphos") stands out as an excellent ligand in terms of yield, selectivity, and stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pd K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) is used to probe the unoccupied molecular orbitals in bidentate diphosphine Pd complexes. Complexes containing a series of bidentate diphosphine ligands (PP) are examined to study the effect of the ligand bite angle on the charge redistribution in these complexes. Different coordinating moieties (XX) have been used to induce a range of Pd oxidation states. A full interpretation of the Pd K-edge XANES data is presented. The negative second derivative of these XANES data provides direct information on the energy and electronic distribution of the different unoccupied molecular orbitals probed. The charge redistributions within the complexes, as reflected in the effective Pd oxidation state, are indicated by both the intensity of the first edge feature, the "Pd d peak", and the energy of the second edge feature, the "Pd p peak", which can be easily observed in the negative second derivative of the XANES data. Additionally, the changing covalent interaction between the Pd and coordinated moieties via the Pd p orbitals is reflected directly in the energy splitting of the "Pd p" peak. Thus, investigation of these (PP)Pd(XX) complexes, some used as catalysts in organic synthesis, with XANES spectroscopy provides new essential information on their electronic properties. Further, the XANES analysis techniques described in this paper can be applied to investigate the unoccupied molecular orbitals and charge redistributions within a wide range of samples. Dendrimers, specifically suited to construct site-isolated groups due to their well-defined hyperbranched structure, have been used as a ligand design element for the construction of nickel catalysts for ethylene oligomerization. The dendritic P,O ligand indeed suppresses the formation of inactive bis- (P,O)Ni complexes in toluene, as is evident from NMR studies, and, as a consequence, outperforms the parent ligand in catalysis in this solvent. The dendritic effect observed in methanol is more subtle because both the dendritic ligand 1 and the parent 2 form bis(P,O)nickel complexes in solution according to NMR spectroscopy. Unlike the parent complex 8, the dendritic bis(P,O)Ni complex 7 derived from dendrimer ligand 1 is able to dissociate to a mono-ligated species under catalytic conditions, that is, 40 bar ethylene and 80 °C, which can enter the catalytic cycle. The efficient reversible functionalization of silica with catalytic sites using noncovalent interactions is described. We prepared silica materials with well-defined binding sites that selectively bind guest molecules that are equipped with the complementary binding motif, with the interaction between the two components being based on either hydrogen bonds or metal-ligand interactions. Several phosphine ligands functionalized with glycine-urea groups, required for hydrogen bond formation to the complementary host on the silica, have been prepared. The resulting noncovalently immobilized complexes have been used as a ligand system in the Pd-catalyzed allylic substitution and Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of 1 -octene. The supramolecular interaction between the transition-metal catalyst and the binding site located at the support is sufficiently strong to enable efficient catalyst recycling. In addition, the nature of the support facilitates the de- and refunctionalization of support, allowing the recycling of both homogeneous catalysts and the functionalized support. A rhodium catalyst based on a functionalized xantphos ligand was used in the hydroformylation of 1-octene in 11 consecutive reactions without showing catalyst deterioration or metal leaching. Activation of H-H, Si-H, and C-H bonds through σ-bond coordination has grown in the past 30 years from a scientific curiosity to an important tool in the functionalization of hydrocarbons. Several mechanisms were discovered via which the initially σ-bonded substrate could be converted: oxidative addition, heterolytic cleavage, σ-bond metathesis, electrophilic attack, etc. The use of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in this area is a more recent development, but obviously nanoparticles offer a much richer basis than classical homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for tuning reactivity for such a demanding process as C-H functionalization. Here, we will review the surface chemistry of nanoparticles and catalytic reactions occurring in the liquid phase, catalyzed by either colloidal or supported metal NPs. We consider nanoparticles prepared in solution, which are stabilized and tuned by polymers, ligands, and supports. The question we have addressed concerns the differences and similarities between molecular complexes and metal NPs in their reactivity toward σ-bond activation and functionalization.

Catalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of rac-furoin and furil produces hydrofuroin with up to 99% ee and 9:1 dr. This reaction provides an exceptionally easy access to optically active hydrofuroins in two straightforward steps from biomass-derived furfural (global production 200,000-300,000 t annually) using benzoin condensation.

A new method of creating libraries of chiral diphosphines is presented. Supramolecular coordination compounds based on Ti, Rh, achiral ditopic ligands, and chiral diols were synthesized by in situ mixing and used as catalysts in the asymmetric hydrogenation of (Z)-methyl 2-acetamido-3-phenylacrylate, giving ee's of up to 92%. The ditopic ligands contain a Schiff base that coordinates to the assembly metal Ti and a phosphine as a ligand for Rh. Chirality is introduced by coordination of the chiral diols to Ti. The controlling chiral center and the substrate are separated by as much as 13 Å.

Various routes for the synthesis of polymer-bound phosphites and phosphoramidites have been investigated. In the presence of a suitable activator the supported phosphoramidites react cleanly with alcohols to give the corresponding monodentate phosphite ligands in solution. We have applied this novel solid-phase route in the parallel synthesis of several monodentate chiral and achiral phosphite ligands.

[Structure: see text] A novel P,N-type ligand family (ClickPhine) is disclosed that is easily accessible using the Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne "click" cycloaddition. A diverse set of ligands was made in just three steps from readily available starting materials to give several homogeneous and a heterogeneous catalyst. Preliminary experiments show the efficacy of these ligands in the Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylation reaction.

We report a new strategy for the preparation of chelating bidentate ligands, which involves just the mixing of two monodentate ligands functionalized with complementary binding sites. In the current example, the assembly process is based on selective metal-ligand interactions, using phosphite zinc(II) porphyrins 1-6 and the nitrogen donor ligands b-i. From only 16 monodentate ligands, a library of 60 palladium catalysts based on 48 bidentate ligand assemblies has been prepared. The relatively small catalyst library gave a large variety in the selectivity of the alkylation of rac-1,3-diphenyl-2-propenyl acetate. Importantly, small variations in the building blocks lead to large differences in the enantioselectivity imposed by the catalyst (up to 97% ee).

The wide bite angle diphosphines homoxantphos (10,11-dihydro-4,5,-bis(diphenylphosphino)dibenzo[b,f]oxepine), sixantphos (4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)-10,10-dimethylphenoxasilin), and thixantphos (2,8-dimethyl-4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)phenoxathiin) were used to prepare cis[MH(2)(diphosphine)(2)] complexes (1a-f) by reaction of [Ru(cod)(cot)] (cod = cyclo-octa-1,5-diene, cot = cyclo-octa-1,3,5-triene) with 2 equiv of the diphosphine under dihydrogen pressure. The electronic properties of the thixantphos ligand were varied. Complexes 1a-f can be protonated with HBF(4) or CF(3)COOH to yield hydrido(dihydrogen) complexes cis[MH(H(2))(diphosphine)(2)](+) (2a-f), which were characterized by VT (variable temperature) NMR and T(1) measurements. These complexes show fast hydrogen atom exchange between the eta(2)-H(2) and the terminal hydride at all temperatures studied. They are thermally unstable toward dihydrogen loss yielding the cationic monohydride complexes cis[MH(diphosphine)(2)](+) (3a-f). Coordination of the eta(2)-H(2) is dominated by sigma --> d donation, and hence, the H-H distance is hardly influenced by the electronic properties of the ligands.

X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy is used to unravel the structure of homogeneous catalysts in their catalytically active phase (solution), for which other characterization techniques failed in providing detailed structural information. Application of in situ EXAFS shows that the conformation of the allylic fragment of (P-P)Pd(1,1-dimethylallyl) catalytic intermediate complexes in solution (i.e., reaction medium) differs from that in the solid state, dependent on the bidentate ligand. The change in orientation directly explains differences in regioselectivity in the allylic alkylation reaction, displayed by the distinct complexes.

Using a high-throughput experimentation approach we found a selective and mild Pd-catalyzed oxidative coupling reaction between anilide derivatives and acrylates that occurs through ortho C-H bond activation. The reaction is carried out in an acidic environment and occurs even at room temperature with use of a cheap oxidant (benzoquinone) in yields up to 91%. The benzoquinone possibly also functions as a ligand, stabilizing the catalyst. From the electronic dependence of the reaction and the observed kinetic isotope effect (kH/kD = 3) the key step of the catalytic cycle is believed to be electrophilic attack by a [PdOAc]+ complex on the pi-system of the arene.

The design and synthesis of molecules containing both a substrate-binding cavity and a nearby catalytically active metal center is a useful approach to the development of synthetic systems that function according to the principles of enzymes. To this end the receptor molecule 2a, derived from diphenylglycoluril, was functionalized with triaryl phosphite ligands to give the receptor ligand 2d. Exchange reactions of 2d with (diketonate)Rh(CO)(2), (diketone = acetylacetone, dibenzoylmethane, or dipivaloylmethane) led to the formation of the metallohosts 3a-c, respectively. The properties and conformational behavior of these metal complexes were studied by NMR techniques. Reaction of compounds 3 with H(2) in the presence of a small excess of additional triphenyl phosphite yields the rhodium(I) hydride complex 5. The metallohosts are capable of binding dihydroxybenzene guests in their cavities by hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking interactions. On binding a substrate the conformational behavior of hosts 3a-c was affected considerably.
