The bonding of single diferrocene [Fc(CH2)14Fc, Fc = ferrocenyl] molecules on a metal surface can be enhanced by partial decomposition of Fc groups induced by the tunneling current in scanning tunneling microscopy. Although the isolated intact molecule is mobile on the terrace of Cu(110) at 78 K, the modified molecule is immobilized on the terrace. Calculations based on density functional theory indicate that the hollow site of the Cu(110) surface is the energetically favorable adsorption site for both ferrocene and the Fe−cyclopentadienyl complex, but the latter one possesses a much higher binding energy with the substrate. Most postharvest fruits are highly perishable, which directly impairs fruit taste and causes an economic loss of fresh products. Thus, it is necessary to find effective techniques to alleviate this issue. Recently, nitric oxide (NO) and brassinosteroid (BR) have been developed as postharvest alternatives to improve fruit quality. This work mainly reviews the recent processes of NO and BR in improving fruit quality during postharvest. Exogenous NO or BR treatments delayed fruit senescence, enhanced disease resistance, and alleviated chilling injury in postharvest fruit, and potential physiological and biochemical mechanisms mainly include (1) enhancing antioxidant and defense ability, (2) affecting ethylene biosynthesis, (3) regulating sugar and energy metabolism, (4) mediating plant hormone signaling, and (5) regulating protein S-nitrosylation and DNA methylation. This review concludes the functions and mechanisms of NO and BR in improving postharvest fruit quality. Additionally, a specific finding is the possible crosstalk of applications of NO and BR during postharvest fruit storage, which provides new insights into the applicability of NO and BR for delaying fruit senescence, enhancing disease resistances of fruit, and alleviating chilling injury in postharvest fruit.

Currently used drugs for glioblastoma (GBM) treatments are ineffective, primarily due to the significant challenges posed by strong drug resistance, poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, and the lack of tumor specificity. Here, we report two cationic fluorescent anticancer agents (TriPEX-ClO 4 and TriPEX-PF 6 ) capable of BBB penetration for efficient GBM therapy via paraptosis and ferroptosis induction. These aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active agents specifically target mitochondria, effectively triggering ATF4/JNK/Alix-regulated paraptosis and GPX4-mediated ferroptosis. Specifically, they rapidly induce substantial mitochondria-derived vacuolation, accompanied by reactive oxygen species generation, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, and intracellular Ca 2+ overload, thereby disrupting metabolisms and inducing nonapoptotic cell death. In vivo imaging revealed that TriPEX-ClO 4 and TriPEX-PF 6 successfully traversed the BBB to target orthotopic glioma and initiated effective synergistic therapy postintravenous injection. Our AIE drugs emerged as the pioneering paraptosis inducers against drug-resistant GBM, significantly extending survival up to 40 days compared to Temozolomide (20 days) in drug-resistant GBM-bearing mice. These compelling results open up new venues for the development of fluorescent anticancer drugs and innovative treatments for brain diseases.

During the process of photoaging in the skin, Succinylated type I collagen has a significant effect on reversing the damage caused by UVB radiation, with the regulation of cellular ferroptosis being one of its important pathophysiological mechanisms. Specifically, Succinylated type I collagen reduces the expression of key cell cycle regulators P16, P21, and P53, as well as the ferroptosis-related factor Acyl-CoA Synthetase Long Chain Family Member 4 (ACSL4), induced by UVB radiation in cells and tissues. Meanwhile, it increases the expression of key factors Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and Solute Carrier Family 7 Member 11 (SLC7A11), which inhibit ferroptosis. Additionally, our study also reveals the impact of Succinylated type I collagen on the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells and tissues, directly affecting the cells' ability to cope with oxidative stress. This further suggests that Succinylated type I collagen may improve skin photoaging through various pathways, including regulating ferroptosis, antioxidation, promoting collagen synthesis, protecting the skin barrier, reducing pigmentation, and inhibiting inflammatory responses, contributing to maintaining healthy and youthful skin.

Zerovalent iron (Fe 0 )-based Fenton-like technology has great potential for treating recalcitrant organic pollutants (ROPs) in wastewater. However, rapidly and precisely manufacturing Fe 0 -based materials with the desired geometries is challenging. Herein, novel three-dimensional printed Fe 0 (3DP-Fe 0 ) and bimetallic 3DP-Ni/Fe 0 were customized by 3D printing for efficient Fenton-like degradation of florfenicol (FLO), a typical antibiotic in wastewater. 3DP-Ni/Fe 0 with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) exhibited superior reactivity toward FLO than 3DP-Fe 0 , generating hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and atomic hydrogen to achieve >90% dehalogenation and >70% total organic carbon removal within 10 min. The resulting degradation intermediates possessed lower antibacterial activity than FLO and did not cause resistance gene proliferation in activated sludge. The Fenton-like activity of 3DP-Ni/Fe 0 was similar across different shapes but increased with increasing porosity and size. Compared with powdered Ni/Fe 0 , 3DP-Ni/Fe 0 exhibited faster electron transfer during Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling, which increased the utilization efficiency of dissolved Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 for ·OH production. Moreover, 3DP-Ni/Fe 0 could be reused >150 times, 5-fold more than powdered Ni/Fe 0 , owing to its lower metal ion release and Fe 0 depletion. 3DP-Ni/Fe 0 with H 2 O 2 can also efficiently remove chemical oxygen demand from real wastewater and other ROPs (e.g., acetaminophen, carbamazepine, thiamphenicol, and tetrabromobisphenol A).

Iron based Prussian blue analogues (Fe-PBA) hold significant promise cathode materials for sodium ion batteries due to their low cost and desirable electrochemical properties. However, their practical application is often hindered by the presence of vacancy defects and issues of oxidation that arise during the material preparation process. To overcome these challenges, this study introduces an innovative T-shaped collision microreactor aimed at promoting a uniform concentration field, narrowing the gap between material mixing rate and reaction rate, and providing an oxygen-free environment for the synthesis of Fe-PBA. Employing this microreactor, Fe-PBAs were synthesized with a meticulous approach that led to a material possessing a well-defined morphology and a stoichiometry of Na 1.54 Fe[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.93 . The material exhibited a notable reduction in vacancy defects and minimized oxidation levels. Upon electrochemical evaluation, the Fe-PBA crafted within the microreactor demonstrated an impressive specific capacity of 94.1 mAh/g at a current density of 0.5 C and showcased a long-term cyclability with 72.6% capacity retention over 2000 cycles. Comparative analysis revealed that the structural and electrochemical properties of Fe-PBA prepared in the microreactor outperformed those of samples prepared using traditional reactors. This work provides a new approach for the continuous and stable fabrication of high-performance battery cathode materials.

Ovarian cancer detection has traditionally relied on a multistep process that includes biopsy, tissue staining, and morphological analysis by experienced pathologists. While widely practiced, this conventional approach suffers from several drawbacks: it is qualitative, time-intensive, and heavily dependent on the quality of staining. Mid-infrared (MIR) hyperspectral photothermal imaging is a label-free, biochemically quantitative technology that, when combined with machine learning algorithms, can eliminate the need for staining and provide quantitative results comparable to traditional histology. However, this technology is slow. This work presents a novel approach to MIR photothermal imaging that enhances its speed by an order of magnitude. This method resolves the longstanding trade-off between imaging resolution and data collection speed, enabling the reconstruction of high-quality, high-resolution images from undersampled data sets and achieving a 10X improvement in data acquisition time. We assessed the performance of our sparse imaging methodology using a variety of quantitative metrics, including mean squared error (MSE), structural similarity index (SSIM), and tissue subtype classification accuracies, employing both random forest and convolutional neural network (CNN) models, accompanied by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. Our statistically robust analysis, based on data from 100 ovarian cancer patient samples and over 65 million data points, demonstrates the method's capability to produce superior image quality and accurately distinguish between different gynecological tissue types with segmentation accuracy exceeding 95%. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of integrating rapid MIR hyperspectral photothermal imaging with machine learning in enhancing ovarian cancer tissue characterization, paving the way for quantitative, label-free, automated histopathology.

The trade-off between high sensitivity and wide detection range remains a challenge for flexible capacitive pressure sensors. Gradient structure can provide continuous deformation and lead to a wide sensing range. However, it simultaneously augments the distance between two electrodes, which diminishes the variation in the relative distance and results in a decreased sensitivity. Herein, a conformal design is introduced into the gradient structure to construct a flexible capacitive pressure sensor. The gradient conformal dome structure is fabricated by a simple reverse dome adsorption process. Taking advantage of the progressive deformation behavior of the gradient dielectric, and the significant improvement of relative distance variation between two electrodes from the conformal design, the sensor achieves a sensitivity of 0.214 kPa -1 in an ultrabroad linear range up to 200 kPa. It maintains high-pressure resolution under the preload of 10 and 100 kPa. Benefiting from the rapid response and excellent repeatability, the sensor can be used for physiological monitor and human motion detection, including arterial pulse, joint bending, and motion state. The gradient conformal design strategy may pave a promising avenue to develop pressure sensors with high sensitivity and wide linear range.

In the process of tumor metastasis, tumor cells can acquire invasion by excessive uptake of nutrients and energy and interact with the host microenvironment to shape a premetastatic niche (PMN) that facilitates their colonization and progression in the distal sites. Pyruvate is an essential nutrient that engages in both energy metabolism and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the lungs for PMN formation, thus providing a target for tumor metastasis treatment. There is a paucity of strategies focusing on PMN prevention, which is key to metastasis inhibition. Here, we design a bioresponsive nanoparticle (HP/GU) based on a disulfide-cross-linked hyperbranched polyethylenimine (D-PEI) core and a hyaluronic acid (HA) shell with a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive cross-linker between them to encapsulate glucose oxidase (GOX) and a mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) inhibitor via electrostatic interaction, which reinforces starvation therapy and reduces PMN formation in the lungs via inhibiting pyruvate metabolism. In tumor cells, GOX and MPC inhibitors can be rapidly released and synergistically reduce the energy supply of tumor cells by consuming glucose and inhibiting pyruvate uptake to decrease tumor cell invasion. MPC inhibitors can also reduce ECM remodeling by blocking cellular pyruvate metabolism to prevent PMN formation. Consequently, HP/GU achieves an efficient inhibition of both primary and metastatic tumors and provides an innovative strategy for the treatment of tumor metastases.

Infections with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are becoming increasingly serious, making the development of novel antimicrobials urgent. Here, we synthesized some amphiphilic honokiol derivatives bearing an oxazole moiety and investigated their antibacterial and hemolytic activities. Bioactivity evaluation showed that E17 possessed significant in vitro antibacterial activity against S. aureus and MRSA, along with low hemolytic activity. Moreover, E17 exhibited rapid bactericidal properties and was not susceptible to resistance. Mechanistic studies indicated that E17 interacts with phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin of bacterial cell membranes, leading to changes in cell membrane permeability and polarization, increased intracellular ROS, and leakage of DNA and proteins, thus accelerating bacterial death. Transcriptome analysis further demonstrated that E17 has membrane-targeting effects, affecting the expression of genes related to cell membranes and ABC transporter proteins. Notably, in vivo activity showed that E17 has prominent anti-MRSA efficacy, comparable to vancomycin, and is expected to be a new anti-MRSA drug candidate.

Atherosclerosis is a persistent inflammatory condition of the blood vessels associated with abnormalities in lipid metabolism. Development of biomimetic nanoplatforms provides an effective strategy. Herein, inspired by the peptide CLIKKPF spontaneously coupling to phosphatidylserine (PS) on the inner leaflet of cell membranes specifically, MM@NPs were constructed by macrophage membrane spontaneous encapsulation of cyclodextrin-based nanoparticles modified with the peptide CLIKKPF and loaded with the hydrophobic compound resveratrol. MM@NPs could be specifically phagocytized by the activated endothelium with the overexpressed VCAM-1 for enhancing target delivery into the pathological lesion. Additionally, for the ApoE -/- mice, MM@NPs provide comprehensive treatment efficiency in reducing oxidant stress, alleviating the inherent inflammation, and decreasing cholesterol deposition, subsequently resulting in the atherosclerotic plaque regression. Therefore, MM@NPs could be one possible candidate for improving lipid metabolism and inflammation in atherosclerosis.

We report a new supramolecular porous crystal assembled from fused macrocycle-cage molecules. The molecule comprises a prismatic cage with three macrocycles radially attached. The molecules form a nanoporous crystal with one-dimensional (1D) nanochannels. The supramolecular porous crystal can take up lithium-ion electrolytes and achieve an ionic conductivity of up to 8.3 × 10 -4 S/cm. Structural analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal that efficient Li-ion electrolyte uptake, the presence of 1D nanochannels, and weak interactions between lithium ions and the crystal enable fast lithium-ion transport. Our findings demonstrate the potential of fused macrocycle-cage molecules as a new design motif for ion-conducting molecular crystals.

Central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by neurosurgery or intrathecal injection of contaminated cerebrospinal fluid are a common and difficult complication. Drug-delivery microrobots are among the latest solutions proposed for antibacterial applications. However, there is a lack of research into developing microrobots with the ability to sustain antibody delivery while can move efficiently in the CNS. Here, biocompatible antibacterial metal-organic framework (MOF)-modified microrollers (MMRs) to combat CNS infections are proposed. The MMRs are iron-based metal-organic framework (NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)) modified for enhanced adsorption and Fe/Al coated for magnetic actuation and biocompatibility. The MMRs have demonstrated a faster and unhindered magnetically actuated motion on the uneven biological tissue surface in an organ-on-a-chip that mimicked the CNS compared to it on smooth surface. CFD results consistently align with the experimental findings. The MMRs can be loaded with rhodamine 6G for bioimaging, allowing them to be imaged through sections of the main human tissues by fluorescence microscopy, or tetracycline hydrochloride for antibiotic delivery, allowing them to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms by sustained release of antibiotics for 9 days. This study provides a strategy to integrate high-capacity adsorption material with magnetically actuated locomotion for long-term targeted antibacterial applications in biological environments.

Bubbles play a ubiquitous role in electrochemical gas evolution reactions. However, a mechanistic understanding of how bubbles affect the energy efficiency of electrochemical processes remains limited to date, impeding effective approaches to further boost the performance of gas evolution systems. From a perspective of the analogy between heat and mass transfer, bubbles in electrochemical gas evolution reactions exhibit highly similar dynamic behaviors to them in the liquid-vapor phase change. Recent developments of liquid-vapor phase change systems have substantially advanced the fundamental knowledge of bubbles, leading to unprecedented enhancement of heat transfer performance. In this Review, we aim to elucidate a promising opportunity of understanding bubble dynamics in electrochemical gas evolution reactions through a lens of phase change heat transfer. We first provide a background about key parallels between electrochemical gas evolution reactions and phase change heat transfer. Then, we discuss bubble dynamics in gas evolution systems across multiple length scales, with an emphasis on exciting research problems inspired by new insights gained from liquid-vapor phase change systems. Lastly, we review advances in engineered surfaces for manipulating bubbles to enhance heat and mass transfer, providing an outlook on the design of high-performance gas evolving electrodes.

The process of spraying water and flavorings on dry tobacco is an important factor in the industrial environment and product quality. Tobacco as a complex porous fiber material, the interfacial transfer process of water is complex. In this study, machine learning and image recognition techniques were utilized to quickly obtain the structural parameters of the tobacco surface and construct a cellular structure model of the tobacco surface. In situ observation of the droplet impact spreading process was carried out using a high-speed camera to explore the droplet dissipation dynamics on different surfaces. And the competing processes of droplet wetting and evaporation under the influence of surface microstructure were determined by combining experimental studies and finite element simulation calculations. Based on the characteristics of tobacco pore size distribution, the infiltration under gas-liquid two-phase action was transformed into single-phase flow transfer under capillary force, and the continuous droplet infiltration process was simulated. A parallel artificial membrane permeability measurement method of bionic tobacco waxy layer was constructed for the screening of spray dosing copenetrant. This study brings new insights into the wetting of porous fibrous materials and is important for exploring the wetting process and additive development process influenced by the microstructure.

The base-mediated allylic defluorinative functionalization of β-CF 2 H-1,3-enynes with nucleophiles is described, affording terminal monofluoroalkenes bearing an alkynyl group in synthetically useful yields and Z / E selectivities. Importantly, the resultant Z / E mixture could be separated by flash chromatography in all cases; thus, stereoisomerically pure monofluoroenynes were obtained. Postsynthetic modifications of the synthesized monofluoroenynes were also accomplished to access diverse molecular structures. Computational studies disclosed the origin of the diastereoselectivity.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is characterized by the accumulation of lipids within the walls of coronary arteries, leading to arterial narrowing and hardening. It serves as the primary etiology and pathological basis for cardiovascular diseases affecting the heart and brain. However, conventional pharmacotherapy is constrained by inadequate drug delivery and pronounced toxic side effects. Moreover, the inefficacy of nanomedicine delivery systems in controlling disease progression may be attributed to nonspecific clearance by the mononuclear phagocyte system. Thus, a biomimetic platform spontaneously enveloped by red blood cell membrane is exploited for anti-atherosclerosis applications, offering favorable biocompatibility. The CLIKKPF polypeptide is introduced to develop red blood cell membrane spontaneously encapsulated nanotherapeutics only through simple coincubation. Given the functional modifications, RBC@P-LVTNPs is beneficial to facilitate the target drug delivery to the atherosclerotic lesion, responding precisely to the pathological ROS accumulation, thereby accelerating the on-demand drug release. Both in vivo and in vitro results also confirm the significant therapeutic efficacy and favorable biocompatibility of the biomimetic nanomedicine delivery system, thus providing a promising candidate for nanotherapeutics against AS.

Outdoor thermal irritation poses a serious threat to public health, with the frequent occurrence of increasingly intense heat waves. With the global goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, there is an urgent need for a strategy that is efficient and can provide localized outdoor cooling without an intensive energy input. This paper demonstrated a rapidly formable polyurethane-based coating with controlled bimodal spherical micropores. Nano-Al 2 O 3 particles (300 nm) embedded in the polymer were used for targeted enhancement of reflectance at 0.38-0.5 wavelengths. The enhanced film reflected 93% solar irradiance and selectively transmitted 95% thermal radiation (8-13 μm), enabling rapid cooling and the creation of a comfortable thermal microclimate to avoid overheating of 6-11 °C during daytime conditions. The ultrawide material compatibility and excellent adaptive mechanical strength of polyurethane-based coatings are expected to benefit the sustainable development of society in a wide range of fields, from health to economics.

Oral ingestion is the primary route for human exposure to nanoplastics, making the gastrointestinal tract one of the first and most impacted organs. Given the presence of the gut-brain axis, a crucial concern arises regarding the potential impact of intestinal damage on the neurotoxic effects of nanoplastics (NPs). The intricate mechanisms underlying NP-induced neurotoxicity through the microbiome-gut-brain axis necessitate further investigation. To address this, we used mice specifically engineered with nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor 2 ( Nrf2 ) deficiency in their intestines, a strain whose intestines are particularly susceptible to polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs). We conducted a 28-day repeated-dose oral toxicity study with 2.5 and 250 mg/kg of 50 nm PS-NPs in these mice. Our study delineated how PS-NP exposure caused gut microbiota dysbiosis, characterized by Mycoplasma and Coriobacteriaceae proliferation, resulting in increased levels of interleukin 17C (IL-17C) production in the intestines. The surplus IL-17C permeated the brain via the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and brain damage. Our investigation elucidated a direct correlation between intestinal health and neurological outcomes in the context of PS-NP exposure. Susceptible mice with fragile guts exhibited heightened neurotoxicity induced by PS-NPs. This phenomenon was attributed to the elevated abundance of microbiota associated with IL-17C production in the intestines of these mice, such as Mesorhizobium and Lwoffii , provoked by PS-NPs. Neurotoxicity was alleviated by in vivo treatment with anti-IL-17C-neutralizing antibodies or antibiotics. These findings advanced our comprehension of the regulatory mechanisms governing the gut-brain axis in PS-NP-induced neurotoxicity and underscored the critical importance of maintaining intestinal health to mitigate the neurotoxic effects of PS-NPs.

Herein, we report a direct phosphorylation of the C(sp 3 )-H bond of 3,4-dihydroquinoxalin-2(1 H )-ones using oxygen as a green oxidant under visible light at room temperature. This transformation was readily accomplished in the absence of metal and photosensitizer to construct new C(sp 3 )-P bonds and provide a series of phosphonylated dihydroquinoxalin-2-ones in good to excellent yields. This approach opens straightforward and environmentally friendly access to 3-phosphoryl quinoxalin-2-ones derivatives.

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) hold great promise for expressing multipeak emission based on their well-defined total structure with diverse luminescent centers. Herein, we report the surface motif-dictated triple phosphorescence of Au NCs with dynamic color turning. The deprotonation-triggered isomerization of terminal thiouracils can evolve into a mutual transformation among their hierarchical motifs, thus serving a multipeak-emission expression with good tailoring. More importantly, the underlying electron transfer is thoroughly identified by excluding the radiative and nonradiative energy transfer, where electrons flow from the first phosphorescent state to the last two ones. The findings shed light on finely tailing motifs at the molecular level to motivate studies on customizable luminescence characteristics of metal NCs.

Conducting/insulating inks have received significant attention for the fabrication of a wide range of additive manufacturing technology. However, current inks often demonstrate poor biocompatibility and face trade-offs between conductivity and mechanical stiffness under physiological conditions. Here, conductive/insulating bioinks based on two-dimensional materials are proposed. The conductive bioink, graphene (GR)-poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA), is prepared by introducing conductive GR into a degradable polymer matrix, PLGA, while the insulating bioink, boron nitride (BN)-PLGA, is synthesized by adding insulating BN. By optimizing the material ratios, this work achieves precise control of the electromechanical properties of the bioinks, thereby enabling the flexible construction of conductive networks according to specific requirements. Furthermore, these bioinks are compatible with a variety of manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing, electrospinning, spin coating, and injection molding, expanding their application range in the biomedical field. Overall, the results suggest that these conducting/insulating bioinks offer improved mechanical, electronic, and biological properties for various emerging biomedical applications.

To discover novel natural product-based insecticides, a series of (+)-nootkatone-based amine derivatives 3a-t were prepared and evaluated for their insecticidal activities against Mythimna separata Walker, Myzus persicae Sulzer, and Plutella xylostella Linnaeus. Insecticidal assays showed that most of the title (+)-nootkatone derivatives exhibited stronger insecticidal activities against three insect pests than the precursor (+)-nootkatone after the introduction of amine groups on the parent (+)-nootkatone. Compounds 3a , 3d , 3h , 3m , 3n , 3p , and 3r displayed more promising growth inhibitory (GI) effect against M. separata than the commercially available botanical insecticide toosendanin. Compound 3o exhibited the most potent aphicidal activity with an LD 50 value of 0.011 μg/larvae, which was 2.09-fold higher than the positive control rotenone. Additionally, compounds 3g and 3n showed more promising larvicidal activity against P. xylostella with LC 50 values of 260 and 230 mg/L, respectively, superior to that of rotenone (460 mg/L). Moreover, derivatives 3g and 3n exhibited better control efficacy toward P. xylostella than rotenone under greenhouse conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that derivative 3n could inhibit the activity of glutathione S -transferase (GST) in P. xylostella and thus exerted larvicidal activity, and molecular docking further demonstrated that 3n could interact well with some amino acid residues of GST. Finally, the toxicity assay suggested that derivatives 3g and 3n were relatively less toxic to nontarget organisms. These findings will provide insights into the development of (+)-nootkatone derivatives as green pesticides.

Hyperspectral photothermal mid-infrared spectroscopic imaging (HP-MIRSI) is an emerging technology with promising applications in cervical cancer diagnosis and quantitative, label-free histopathology. This study pioneers the application of HP-MIRSI to the evaluation of clinical cervical cancer tissues, achieving excellent tissue type segmentation accuracy of over 95%. This achievement stems from an integrated approach of optimized data acquisition, computational data reconstruction, and the application of machine learning algorithms. The results are statistically robust, drawing from tissue samples of 98 cervical cancer patients and incorporating over 40 million data points. Traditional cervical cancer diagnosis methods entail biopsy, staining, and visual evaluation by a pathologist. This process is qualitative, subject to variations in staining and subjective interpretations, and requires extensive tissue processing, making it costly and time-consuming. In contrast, our proposed alternative can produce images comparable to those from histological analyses without the need for staining or complex sample preparation. This label-free, quantitative method utilizes biochemical data from HP-MIRSI and employs machine-learning algorithms for the rapid and precise segmentation of cervical tissue subtypes. The stabilization at low temperatures of the Ag 2 S cubic phase could afford the design of high-performance thermoelectric materials with excellent mechanical behavior, enabling them to withstand prolonged vibrations and thermal stress. In this work, we show that the Ag 2 Te x S 1- x solid solutions, with Te content within the optimal range 0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.30, maintain a stable cubic phase across a wide temperature range from 300 to 773 K, thus avoiding the detrimental phase transition from monoclinic to cubic phase observed in Ag 2 S. Notably, the Ag 2 Te x S 1- x (0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.30) samples showed no fractures during bending tests and displayed superior ductility at room temperature compared to Ag 2 S, which fractured at a strain of 6.6%. Specifically, the Ag 2 Te 0.20 S 0.80 sample demonstrated a bending average yield strength of 46.52 MPa at 673 K, significantly higher than that of Ag 2 S, whose bending average yield strength dropped from 80.15 MPa at 300 K to 12.66 MPa at 673 K. Furthermore, the thermoelectric performance of the Ag 2 Te x S 1- x (0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.30) samples surpassed that of both InSe and pure Ag 2 S, with the Ag 2 Te 0.30 S 0.70 sample achieving the highest ZT value of 0.59 at 723 K. These results indicate substantial potential for practical applications due to enhanced durability and thermoelectric performance.

Previous studies have shown that the nonlinear rheological behavior of 3-arm star polymer melts in fast extensional flow is identical to that of linear polymers with the same span molecular weight, because the star polymers are highly aligned and have a similar conformation as the corresponding linear polymers. However, with more arms, it would be more difficult for the stars to be aligned like linear chains, and the nonlinear extensional rheology of star polymers with more arms under large deformations has not been investigated yet. Here we show that the star polystyrene (8-10 arms) melts behave differently from the linear polystyrenes. A transient stress overshoot is observed in the fast extensional flow, probably due to the difference in entanglement density near and far away from the branch point.

Flexible self-powered tactile sensors, with applications spanning wearable electronics, human-machine interaction, prosthetics, and soft robotics, offer real-time feedback on tactile interactions in diverse environments. Despite advances in their structural development, challenges persist in sensitivity and robustness, particularly when additional functionalities, such as high transparency and stretchability. In this study, we present a novel approach integrating a bionic fingerprint ring structure with a PVDF-HFP/AgNWs composite fiber electrode membrane, fabricated via 3D printing technology and electrospinning, respectively, yielding a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based self-powered tactile sensor. The sensor demonstrates high sensitivity (5.84 V/kPa in the 0-10 kPa range) and rapid response time (10 ms), attributed to the microring texture on its surface, and exhibits exceptional robustness, maintaining electrical output integrity even after 24,000 cycles of loading. These findings highlight the potential of the microring structures in addressing critical challenges in flexible sensor technology.

Atherosclerotic plaques exhibit high cholesterol deposition and oxidative stress resulting from high reactive oxygen species (ROS). These are the major components in plaques and the main pro-inflammatory factor. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an effective therapeutic strategy that can simultaneously address the multiple pro-inflammatory factors via removing cholesterol and inhibiting the overaccumulated ROS. In this study, we constructed macrophage membrane-encapsulated biomimetic nanoparticles (MM@DA-pCD@MTX), which not only alleviate cholesterol deposition at the plaque lesion via reverse cholesterol transport but also scavenge the overaccumulated ROS. β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) and the loaded methotrexate (MTX) act synergistically to induce cholesterol efflux for inhibiting the formation of foam cells. Among them, MTX up-regulated the expression of ABCA1, CYP27A1, and SR-B1. β-CD increased the solubility of cholesterol crystals. In addition, the ROS scavenging property of dopamine (DA) was perfectly preserved in MM@DA-pCD@MTX, which could scavenge the overaccumulated ROS to alleviate the oxidative stress at the plaque lesion. Last but not least, MM-functionalized "homing" targeting of atherosclerotic plaques not only enables the targeted drug delivery but also prolongs in vivo circulation time and drug half-life. In summary, MM@DA-pCD@MTX emerges as a potent, multifunctional therapeutic platform for AS treatment, offering a high degree of biosafety and efficacy in addressing the complex pathophysiology of atherosclerosis.

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are integral to contemporary energy storage, yet current anode material systems struggle to meet the increasing demand for extended range capabilities. This work introduces a novel composite anode material composed of one-dimensional 2H-phase tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) nanoribbons enclosed within cavities of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SnS 2 @SWCNTs), achieved through precise atomic engineering. Employing aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, we precisely elucidated the crystal structure of SnS 2 within the confines of the SWCNTs. This deliberate design effectively addresses the inherent limitations of SnS 2 as a lithium-ion anode material, including its low electrical conductivity, considerable volume expansion effects, and unstable solid electrolyte interface membrane. Testing confirmed that SnS 2 transforms into the Li 5 Sn 2 alloy phase after full lithiation and back to SnS 2 after delithiation, showing excellent reversibility. The composite also benefits from edge effects, improving lithium storage through stronger binding and lower migration barriers, which were supported by calculations. This pioneering work advances high-performance anode materials for applications.

Water scarcity remains a grand challenge across the globe. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) is an emerging and promising solution for water scarcity, especially in arid and noncoastal regions. Traditional approaches to AWH such as fog harvesting and dewing are often not applicable in an arid environment (<30% relative humidity (RH)), whereas SAWH has demonstrated great potential to provide fresh water under a wide range of climate conditions. Despite advances in materials development, most demonstrated SAWH devices still lack sufficient water production. In this work, we focus on the adsorption bed design to achieve high water production, multicyclic operation, and a compact form factor (high material loading per heat source contact area). We report that constructed Au nanoclusters (NCs) can afford amazing white emission synergistically dictated by the Au(0)-dominated core-state fluorescence and Au(I)-governed surface-state phosphorescence, with record-high absolute quantum yields of 42.1% and 53.6% in the aqueous solution and powder state, respectively. Moreover, the dynamic color tuning is achieved in a wide warm-to-cold white-light range (with the correlated color temperature varied from 3426 to 24 973 K) by elaborately manipulating the ratio of Au(0) to Au(I) species and thus the electron transfer rate from staple motif to metal kernel. This study not only exemplifies the successful integration of multiple luminescent centers into metal NCs to accomplish efficient white-light emission but also inspires a feasible pathway toward customizing the optical properties of metal NCs by regulating electron transfer kinetics.

Acrolein (ACR), methylglyoxal (MGO), and glyoxal (GO) are a class of reactive carbonyl species (RCS), which play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chronic and age-related diseases. Here, we explored a new RCS inhibitor (theanine, THE) and investigated its capture capacity on RCS in vivo by human experiments. After proving that theanine could efficiently capture ACR instead of MGO/GO by forming adducts under simulated physiological conditions, we further detected the ACR/MGO/GO adducts of theanine in the human urine samples after consumption of theanine capsules (200 and 400 mg) or green tea (4 cups, containing 200 mg of theanine) by using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-time-of-flight-high-resolution mass spectrometry. Quantitative assays revealed that THE-ACR, THE-2ACR-1, THE-MGO, and THE-GO were formed in a dose-dependent manner in the theanine capsule groups; the maximum value of the adducts of theanine was also tested. Furthermore, besides the RCS adducts of theanine, the RCS adducts of catechins could also be detected in the drinking tea group. Whereas, metabolite profile analysis showed that theanine could better capture RCS produced in the renal metabolic pathway than catechins. Our findings indicated that theanine could reduce RCS in the body in two ways: as a pure component or contained in tea leaves.

Disruption of the symbiosis of extra/intratumoral metabolism is a good strategy for treating tumors that shuttle resources from the tumor microenvironment. Here, we report a precision treatment strategy for enhancing pyruvic acid and intratumoral acidosis to destroy tumoral metabolic symbiosis to eliminate tumors; this approach is based on PEGylated gold and lactate oxidase-modified aminated dendritic mesoporous silica with lonidamine and ferrous sulfide loading (PEG-Au@DMSNs/FeS/LND@LOX). In the tumor microenvironment, LOX oxidizes lactic acid to produce pyruvate, which represses tumor cell proliferation by inhibiting histone gene expression and induces ferroptosis by partial histone monoubiquitination. In acidic tumor conditions, the nanoparticles release H 2 S gas and Fe 2+ ions, which can inhibit catalase activity to promote the Fenton reaction of Fe 2+ , resulting in massive ·OH production and ferroptosis via Fe 3+ . More interestingly, the combination of H 2 S and LND (a monocarboxylic acid transporter inhibitor) can cause intracellular acidosis by lactate, and protons overaccumulate in cells. Multiple intracellular acidosis is caused by lactate-pyruvate axis disorders. Moreover, H 2 S provides motive power to intensify the shuttling of nanoparticles in the tumor region. The findings confirm that this nanomedicine system can enable precise antitumor effects by disrupting extra/intratumoral metabolic symbiosis and inducing ferroptosis and represents a promising active drug delivery system candidate for tumor treatment.

DNA-encoded library (DEL) technologies enable the fast exploration of gigantic chemical space to identify ligands for the target protein of interest and have become a powerful hit finding tool for drug discovery projects. However, amenable DEL chemistry is restricted to a handful of reactions, limiting the creativity of drug hunters. Here, we describe a new on-DNA synthetic pathway to access sulfides and sulfoximines. These moieties, usually contemplated as challenging to achieve through alkylation and oxidation, can now be leveraged in routine DEL selection campaigns.

Electrochemical C-H mono/multi-bromination regulation of N -sulfonylanilines on the cost-effective CF electrode is described. This reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope, affording diverse mono/multi-brominated anilines in moderate to good yields. Mechanism study reveals that this transformation involves anodic oxidation, aromatic electrophilic substitution, and deprotonation. Preliminary electroactive molecule screening results in its prospective application in electroactive MBs for electrochemical biosensors.

Owing to the separation of field-effect transistor (FET) devices from sensing environments, extended-gate FET (EGFET) biosensor features high stability and low cost. Herein, a highly sensitive EGFET biosensor based on a GaN micropillar array and polycrystalline layer (GMP) was fabricated, which was prepared by using simple one-step low-temperature MOCVD growth. In order to improve the sensitivity and detection limit of EGFET biosensor, the surface area and the electrical conductivity of extended-gate electrode can be increased by the micropillar array and the polycrystalline layer, respectively. The designed GMP-EGFET biosensor was modified with l-cysteine and applied for Hg 2+ detection with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1 ng/L, a high sensitivity of -16.3 mV/lg(μg/L) and a wide linear range (1 ng/L-24.5 μg/L). In addition, the detection of Hg 2+ in human urine was realized with an LOD of 10 ng/L, which was more than 30 times lower than that of reported sensors. To our knowledge, it is the first time that GMP was used as extended-gate of EGFET biosensor.

Silicon (Si) alkaline etching constitutes a fundamental process in the semiconductor industry. Although its etching kinetics on plain substrates have been thoroughly investigated, the kinetics of Si wet etching in nanoconfinements have yet to be fully explored despite its practical importance in three-dimensional (3-D) semiconductor manufacturing. Herein, we report the systematic study of potassium hydroxide (KOH) wet etching kinetics of amorphous silicon (a-Si)-filled two-dimensional (2-D) planar nanochannels. Our findings reveal that the etching rate would increase with the increase in nanochannel height before reaching a plateau, indicating a strong nonlinear confinement effect. Through investigation using etching solutions with different ionic strengths and/or different temperatures, we further find that both electrostatic interactions and the hydration layer inside the nanoconfinement contribute to the confinement-dependent etching kinetics. Our results offer fresh perspectives into the kinetic study of reactions in nanoconfinements and will shed light on the optimization of etching processes in the semiconductor industry.

Knowing heat capacity is crucial for modeling temperature changes with the absorption and release of heat and for calculating the thermal energy storage capacity of oxide mixtures with energy applications. The current prediction methods (ab initio simulations, computational thermodynamics, and the Neumann-Kopp rule) are computationally expensive, not fully generalizable, or inaccurate. Machine learning has the potential of being fast, accurate, and generalizable, but it has been scarcely used to predict mixture properties, particularly for mixed oxides. Here, we demonstrate a method for the generalizable prediction of heat capacity of solid oxide pseudobinary mixtures using heat capacity data obtained from computational thermodynamics and descriptors from ab initio databases. Models trained through this workflow achieved an error (mean absolute error of 0.43 J mol -1 K -1 ) lower than the uncertainty in differential scanning calorimetry measurements, and the workflow can be extended to predict other properties derived from the Gibbs free energy and for higher-order oxide mixtures.

Cichorium glandulosum Boiss. et Huet ( CGB) extract has an α-glucosidase inhibitory effect (IC 50 = 59.34 ± 0.07 μg/mL, positive control drug acarbose IC 50 = 126.1 ± 0.02 μg/mL), but the precise enzyme inhibitors implicated in this process are not known. The screening of α-glucosidase inhibitors in CGB extracts was conducted by bioaffinity ultrafiltration, and six potential inhibitors (quercetin, lactucin, 3-O-methylquercetin, hyperoside, lactucopicrin, and isochlorogenic acid B) were screened as the precise inhibitors. The binding rate calculations and evaluation of enzyme inhibitory effects showed that lactucin and lactucopicrin exhibited the greatest inhibitory activities. Next, the inhibiting effects of the active components of CGB , lactucin and lactucopicrin, on α-glucosidase and their mechanisms were investigated through α-glucosidase activity assay, enzyme kinetics, multispectral analysis, and molecular docking simulation. The findings demonstrated that lactucin (IC 50 = 52.76 ± 0.21 μM) and lactucopicrin (IC 50 = 17.71 ± 0.64 μM) exhibited more inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase in comparison to acarbose (positive drug, IC 50 = 195.2 ± 0.30 μM). Enzyme kinetic research revealed that lactucin inhibits α-glucosidase through a noncompetitive inhibition mechanism, while lactucopicrin inhibits it through a competitive inhibition mechanism. The fluorescence results suggested that lactucin and lactucopicrin effectively reduce the fluorescence of α-glucosidase by creating lactucin-α-glucosidase and lactucopicrin-α-glucosidase complexes through static quenching. Furthermore, the circular dichroism (CD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses revealed that the interaction between lactucin or lactucopicrin and α-glucosidase resulted in a modification of the α-glucosidase's conformation. The findings from molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations offer further confirmation that lactucopicrin has a robust binding affinity for certain residues located within the active cavity of α-glucosidase. Furthermore, it has a greater affinity for α-glucosidase compared to lactucin. The results validate the suppressive impact of lactucin and lactucopicrin on α-glucosidase and elucidate their underlying processes. Psoriasis is a systemic, recurrent, chronic autoimmune skin disease. However, psoriasis drugs have poor skin permeability and high toxicity, resulting in low bioavailability and affecting their clinical application. In this study, we propose a curcumin-based ionic liquid hydrogel loaded with ilomastat (Cur-Car-IL@Ilo hydrogel), which can effectively maintain the sustained release of drugs and improve the skin permeability of drugs. We used a model of imiquimod-induced psoriasis and demonstrated that local application of Cur-Car-IL@Ilo hydrogel can improve skin lesions in mice with significantly reduced expression levels of inflammatory factors, matrix metalloproteinase 8, and collagen-I. The expressions of iron death-related proteins SLC7A11 and ASL4 were significantly decreased after treatment with Cur-Car-IL@Ilo hydrogel. Flora analysis showed that the content of anaerotruncus, proteus, and UCG-009 bacteria in the gut of psoriatic mice increased. The levels of paludicola, parabacteroides, prevotellaceae&#95;UCG-001, escherichia-shigella, and aerococcus decreased, and the levels of some of the above bacteria tended to be normal after treatment. Therefore, the curcumin-based ionic liquid hydrogel can be used as a multifunctional, nonirritating, noninvasive, and highly effective percutaneous treatment of psoriasis.

Hydrolytically stable materials exhibiting a wide range of programmable water sorption behaviors are crucial for on-demand water sorption systems. While notable advancements in employing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as promising water adsorbents have been made, developing a robust yet easily tailorable MOF scaffold for specific operational conditions remains a challenge. To address this demand, we employed a topology-guided linker installation strategy using NU-600, which is a zirconium-based MOF (Zr-MOF) that contains three vacant crystallographically defined coordination sites. Through a judicious selection of three N-heterocyclic auxiliary linkers of specific lengths, we installed them into designated sites, giving rise to six new MOFs bearing different combinations of linkers in predetermined positions. The resulting MOFs, denoted as NU-606 to NU-611, demonstrate enhanced structural stability against capillary force-driven channel collapse during water desorption due to the increased connectivity of the Zr 6 clusters in the resulting MOFs. Furthermore, incorporating these auxiliary linkers with various hydrophilic N sites enables the systematic modulation of the pore-filling pressure from about 55% relative humidity (RH) for the parent NU-600 down to below 40% RH. This topology-driven linker installation strategy offers precise control of water sorption properties for MOFs, highlighting a facile route to design MOF adsorbents for use in water sorption applications.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9) is a member of the transcription CDK subfamily. In this work, we preliminarily demonstrated the feasibility of CDK9 as a potent target of treatment for colorectal cancer, and a series of novel CDK9 inhibitors were rationally designed and synthesized based on the structure of AZD5438 (a pan CDKs inhibitor reported by AstraZeneca). A novel selective CDK9 inhibitor named CLZX-205, which possessed significant CDK9 inhibitory activity (IC 50 = 2.9 nM) with acceptable pharmacokinetic properties and antitumor efficacy in vitro and in vivo, was developed. Research on the mechanism indicated that CLZX-205 could induce apoptosis in the HCT116 cell line by inhibiting phosphorylation of RNA polymerase II at Ser2, which resulted in the inhibition of apoptosis-related genes and proteins expression, and these results were validated at the cellular and tumor tissue levels. Currently, CLZX-205 is undergoing further research as a promising candidate for CRC treatment.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated tumor cell death is a powerful anticancer strategy. Cuproptosis is a copper-dependent and ROS-mediated prospective tumor therapy strategy. However, the complex tumor microenvironment (TME), low tumor specificity, poor therapy efficiency, and lack of imaging capability impair the therapy output of current cuproptosis drugs. Herein, we designed a dual-responsive two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D MOF) nanotheranostic via a coordination self-assembly strategy using Au(III) tetra-(4-pyridyl) porphine (AuTPyP) as the ligand and copper ions (Cu 2+ ) as nodes. The dual-stimulus combined with the protonation of the pyridyl group in AuTPyP and deep-penetration ultrasound (US) together triggered the controlled release in an acidic TME. The ultrathin structure (3.0 nm) of nanotheranostics promoted the release process. The released Cu 2+ was reduced to Cu + by depleting the overexpressed glutathione (GSH) in the tumor, which not only activated the Ferredoxin 1 (FDX1)-mediated cuproptosis but also catalyzed the overexpressed hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in the tumor into reactive oxygen species via Fenton-like reaction. Simultaneously, the released AuTPyP could specifically bind with thioredoxin reductase and activate the redox imbalance of tumor cells. These together selectively induced significant mitochondrial vacuoles and prominent tumor cell death but did not damage the normal cells. The fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results verified this nanotheranostic could target the HeLa tumor to greatly promote the self-enhanced effect of chemotherapy/cuproptosis and tumor inhibition efficiency. The work helped to elucidate the controlled assembly of multiresponsive nanotheranostics and the high-specificity ROS regulation for application in anticancer therapy.

Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) is a nonselective calcium ion channel highly expressed in the primary sensory neurons, functioning as a polymodal sensor for exogenous and endogenous stimuli, and has been implicated in neuropathic pain and respiratory disease. Herein, we describe the optimization of potent, selective, and orally bioavailable TRPA1 small molecule antagonists with strong in vivo target engagement in rodent models. Several lead molecules in preclinical single- and short-term repeat-dose toxicity studies exhibited profound prolongation of coagulation parameters. Based on a thorough investigative toxicology and clinical pathology analysis, anticoagulation effects in vivo are hypothesized to be manifested by a metabolite─generated by aldehyde oxidase (AO)─possessing a similar pharmacophore to known anticoagulants (i.e., coumarins, indandiones). Further optimization to block AO-mediated metabolism yielded compounds that ameliorated coagulation effects in vivo , resulting in the discovery and advancement of clinical candidate GDC-6599 , currently in Phase II clinical trials for respiratory indications.

Accurate discrimination of metal species is a significant analytical challenge. Herein, we propose a novel methodology based on liquid-phase cyclic chemiluminescence (CCL) for the identification of cobalt speciation. The CCL multistage signals ( I n ) of the luminol-H 2 O 2 reaction catalyzed by different cobalt species have different decay coefficients k . Thereby, we can facilely identify various cobalt species according to the distinguishable k values, including the complicated and structurally similar cobalt complexes, such as analogues of [Co(NH 3 ) 5 X] n + (X = Cl - , H 2 O, and NH 3 ), Co(II) porphyrins, and bis(2,4-pentanedione) cobalt(II) derivatives. Especially, the number of substituent atoms also influences the k value greatly, which allows excellent discrimination between complexes that only have a subtle difference in the substituent group. In addition, linear discriminant analysis based on I n provides a complementary solution to improve the differentiating ability. We performed density functional theory calculations to investigate the interaction mode of H 2 O 2 over cobalt species. A close negative correlation between the adsorption energy and the k value is observed. Moreover, the calculation of energy evolutions of H 2 O 2 decomposition into a double hydroxide radical shows that a high level of consistency exists between the activation energy barrier and the k value. The results further demonstrate that the decay coefficient of the CCL multistage signal is associated with the catalytic reactivity of the cobalt species. Our work not only broadens the application of chemiluminescence but also provides a complementary technology for speciation analysis.

An electrochemical intramolecular 5- exo-dig aza-cyclization of 2-alkynylbenzamides and subsequent nucleophilic fluorination have been developed to afford the highly selective synthesis of mono- and trifluorinated isoindolin-1-one derivatives. This work demonstrates the unique capability of synthetic electrochemistry in controlling reaction selectivity through the applied electrolytic parameters. In addition, the obtained monofluorinated 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-one ( 19 ) displays interesting photophysical properties that are not observed in its nonfluorinated analog.

An efficient O-H insertion of hydrogenphosphate derivatives and α-diazo compounds has been developed to construct α-phosphoryloxy scaffolds. Diverse α-phosphoryloxy skeletons could be obtained under mild and catalyst-free conditions in good yields. The control experiments suggest a protonation and nucleophilic addition process of α-diazo compounds via a diazonium ion pair for this transformation.

Hyperbolic polaritons have been attracting increasing interest for applications in optoelectronics, biosensing, and super-resolution imaging. Here, we report the in-plane hyperbolic exciton polaritons in monolayer black-arsenic (B-As), where hyperbolicity arises strikingly from two exciton resonant peaks. Remarkably, the presence of two resonances at different momenta makes overall hyperbolicity highly tunable by strain, as the two exciton peaks can be merged into the same frequency to double the strength of hyperbolicity as well as light absorption under a 1.5% biaxial strain. Moreover, the frequency of the merged hyperbolicity can be further tuned from 1.35 to 0.8 eV by an anisotropic biaxial strain. Furthermore, electromagnetic numerical simulation reveals a strain-induced hyperbolicity, as manifested in a topological transition of iso-frequency contour of exciton polaritons. The good tunability, large exciton binding energy, and strong light absorption exhibited in the hyperbolic monolayer B-As make it highly suitable for nanophotonics applications under ambient conditions.

Telomeres are nanoscale DNA-protein complexes to protect and stabilize chromosomes. The reexpression of telomerase in cancer cells is a key determinant crucial for the infinite proliferation and long-term survival of most cancer cells. However, the use of telomerase inhibitors for cancer treatment may cause problems such as poor specificity, drug resistance, and cytotoxicity. Here, we discovered a nondrug and noninvasive terahertz modulation strategy capable of the long-term suppression of cancer cells by inhibiting telomerase activity. First, we found that an optimized frequency of 33 THz photon irradiation effectively inhibited the telomerase activity by molecular dynamics simulation and frequency filtering experiments. Moreover, in vitro experiments showed that telomerase activity in 4T1 and MCF-7 cells significantly decreased by 77% and 80% respectively, after 21 days of regular 33 THz irradiation. Furthermore, two kinds of cells were found to undergo aging, apoptosis, and DNA double-strand breaks caused by telomere crisis, which seriously affected the survival of cancer cells. In addition, the tumorigenicity of 4T1 cells irradiated with 33 THz waves for 21 days in in vivo mice decreased by 70%. In summary, this study demonstrates the potential application of THz modulation in nano therapy for cancer.
