Peripheral H-binding sites have been introduced on porphyrins resulting in the recognition of carbohydrates and chiral amino acids by zinc porphyrins. The synthesis of a highly rigid phenanthroline (phen) strapped porphyrin has previously been described, and for its zinc(II) complex, it is now reported that the nature of the strap enables selective binding of a fifth coordinate on either the hindered strapped side or the open unstrapped side.

A simple procedure for the conversion of tertiary lactams to 2-monoalkylated cyclic amines is described. The reaction sequence involves conversion of a lactam to a thioiminium ion followed by reaction with an organocopper (RCu) reagent and final reduction with triacetoxyborohydride. The reaction is high yielding and shows an excellent functional group tolerance. Its utility is demonstrated by a rapid synthesis of indolizidine 167B. The excellent chemoselectivity of the process, where only monoalkylation products are formed, is rationalized by a mechanism involving the formation of a transient enamine.

Nanoparticle-based magnetic resonance imaging T 2 negative agents are of great interest, and much effort is devoted to increasing cell-loading capability while maintaining low cytotoxicity. Herein, two classes of mixed-ligand protected magnetic-responsive, bimetallic gold/iron nanoparticles (Au/Fe NPs) synthesized by a two-step method are presented. Their structure, surface composition, and magnetic properties are characterized. The two classes of sulfonated Au/Fe NPs, with an average diameter of 4 nm, have an average atomic ratio of Au to Fe equal to 7 or 8, which enables the Au/Fe NPs to be superparamagnetic with a blocking temperature of 56 K and 96 K. Furthermore, preliminary cellular studies reveal that both Au/Fe NPs show very limited toxicity. MRI phantom experiments show that r 2 /r 1 ratio of Au/Fe NPs is as high as 670, leading to a 66% reduction in T 2 relaxation time. These nanoparticles provide great versatility and potential for nanoparticle-based diagnostics and therapeutic applications and as imaging contrast agents.

Lead halide perovskites have over the past few years attracted considerable interest as photo absorbers in PV applications with record efficiencies now reaching 22%. It has recently been found that not only the composition but also the precise stoichiometry is important for the device performance. Recent reports have, for example, demonstrated small amount of PbI2 in the perovskite films to be beneficial for the overall performance of both the standard perovskite, CH3NH3PbI3, as well as for the mixed perovskites (CH3NH3)x(CH(NH2)2)(1-x)PbBryI(3-y). In this work a broad range of characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photo electron spectroscopy (PES), transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), UV-vis, electroluminescence (EL), photoluminescence (PL), and confocal PL mapping have been used to further understand the importance of remnant PbI2 in perovskite solar cells. Our best devices were over 18% efficient, and had in line with previous results a small amount of excess PbI2. For the PbI2-deficient samples, the photocurrent dropped, which could be attributed to accumulation of organic species at the grain boundaries, low charge carrier mobility, and decreased electron injection into the TiO2. The PbI2-deficient compositions did, however, also have advantages. The record Voc was as high as 1.20 V and was found in PbI2-deficient samples. This was correlated with high crystal quality, longer charge carrier lifetimes, and high PL yields and was rationalized as a consequence of the dynamics of the perovskite formation. We further found the ion migration to be obstructed in the PbI2-deficient samples, which decreased the JV hysteresis and increased the photostability. PbI2-deficient synthesis conditions can thus be used to deposit perovskites with excellent crystal quality but with the downside of grain boundaries enriched in organic species, which act as a barrier toward current transport. Exploring ways to tune the synthesis conditions to give the high crystal quality obtained under PbI2-poor condition while maintaining the favorable grain boundary characteristics obtained under PbI2-rich conditions would thus be a strategy toward more efficiency devices.

Polycarboxylate ligands are among the most important building blocks for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The ability to access these ligands in an efficient way is of key importance for future applications of MOFs. Here, we demonstrate that mono- and dinuclear clathrochelate complexes are versatile scaffolds for the preparation of polytopic carboxylate ligands. The largely inert clathrochelate complexes have a trigonal-bipyramidal shape. The synthesis of functionalized clathrochelates with two, three, four, or five carboxylic acid groups in the ligand periphery can be achieved in a few steps from simple starting materials. Apart from being easily accessible, the metalloligands display interesting characteristics for applications in metallasupramolecular chemistry and materials science: they are rigid, large (up to 2.2 nm), and robust and they can show additional functions (e.g., fluorescence or extra charge) depending on the metal ion that is present in the clathrochelate core. The utility of these new metalloligands in MOF chemistry is demonstrated by the synthesis of zinc- and zirconium-based coordination polymers. The combination of Zn(NO3)2 with clathrochelates having two or three carboxylic acid groups gives MOFs in which the clathrochelate ligands are connected by Zn4O clusters or zinc paddlewheel links. The structures of the resulting two- and three-dimensional networks could be established by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The reaction of carboxylic acid functionalized clathrochelates with ZrCl4 gives amorphous powders that display permanent porosity after solvent removal.

A concise synthesis of (±)-cylindricine C and its C(13)-epimer is described. Starting from 1-octyne, cylindricine C and 13-epi-cylindricine C were prepared in 11% and 15% yields, respectively. The synthesis involves the preparation of the central tricyclic moiety via a radical α-iodoketone carboazidation/bis-reductive amination sequence. We have synthesized and characterized three types of perovskite alkaline niobate nanowires: NaNbO(3), KNbO(3), and LiNbO(3) (XNbO(3)). All three types of nanowires exhibit strong nonlinear response. Confocal imaging has been employed to quantitatively compare the efficiency of synthesized nanowires to generate second harmonic signal and to show that LiNbO(3) nanowires exhibit the strongest nonlinear response. We also investigated the polarization response of the second harmonic generation (SHG) signal in all three types of alkaline nanowires for the two geometries tractable by our optical trapping setup. The SHG signal is highly influenced by the nanowire crystallinity and experimental geometry. We also demonstrate for the first time wave-guiding of SHG signal in all three types of alkaline niobate nanowires. By carefully examining nonlinear properties of (XNbO(3)) nanowires we suggest which type of wires are best suited for the given application.

The recognition and sensing of aqueous chloride by synthetic receptors is a challenging task. Herein we apply the chemosensing ensemble methodology to optically detect chloride in water at near physiological pH. Variants based on two closely related receptors have been explored. The sensors can be obtained in situ by mixing a rhodium complex, a bidentate N,N-chelate ligand, and a fluorescent dye in buffered aqueous solution. Upon mixing the sensor components, the rhodium complex binds to the N,N-chelate ligand to yield a metal-based receptor. This latter associates with the fluorophore to give a non-emissive ground-state complex. The chemosensing ensembles respond to chloride via a turn-on fluorescence signal and can be used for optical detection of chloride down to mid-micromolar concentrations.

A series of 10 different mesomorphic semidendrimeric tridentate ligands L5-L14 grafted with terminal cyanobiphenyl groups have been synthesized. Upon reaction with Ln(NO(3))(3) (Ln = trivalent lanthanide), the central 2,6-bis(N-ethylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine unit is meridionally tricoordinated to the metal to give rodlike monomeric [Ln(Lk)(NO(3))(3)] and H-shaped dimeric [Ln(2)(Lk)(2)(NO(3))(6)] complexes. For the small Lu(III) cation, the monomeric complexes are quantitatively formed in a noncoordinating CD(2)Cl(2) solution. For larger cations (Ln = Eu, Pr), the thermodynamic equilibrium 2[Ln(Lk)(NO(3))(3)] ↔ [Ln(2)(Lk)(2)(NO(3))(6)] can be evidenced across the complete ligand series. Detailed thermodynamic studies show that the dimeric complexes result from the formation of primary intermetallic nitrate bridges whose strength depends on the metallic size. For each complex, secondary nonspecific interstrand van der Waals interactions produce nonartifactual enthalpy/entropy compensation. In the absence of solvent, only the complexes with the most extended ligands L5 and L6 produce thermotropic mesophases. Layered organizations are dominant (smectic A) with the induction of nematogenic behavior at high temperature when interstrand interactions are modulated by methyl substitutions. Correlations between the trend of dimerization and the sequences of thermotropic mesophases are attempted.

A one-pot procedure involving radical conjugate addition of B-alkylcatecholboranes to enones followed by intramolecular aldol reaction is reported. Application to the stereoselective synthesis of monocyclic and bicyclic products with up to four contiguous stereogenic centers is presented.

A systematic study of the diastereoselectivity of the radical carboazidation of methylenecyclohexane derivatives is presented. Several substitution patterns leading to a high level of stereocontrol have been identified. Axial attack is the preferred reaction pathway for cyclohexyl radicals, and excellent stereoselectivities can be obtained by introducing an axial substitutent at position 2. In this case, a second equatorial substituent at position 2 may be tolerated without a large detrimental effect on the diastereoselectivity. Finally, a high level of equatorial attack is observed with a very bulky substituent at position 2.

Spirocyclohexa-2,5-dienes were shown to rearrange at -40 degrees C, when treated with 1 equiv of LDA. Alkyl halides and aldehydes then reacted with the resulting phenanthridinone lithium enolate intermediates, with distinct regioselectivities and high diastereocontrol, to afford functionalized dearomatized phenanthridinones which were elaborated further. A mechanistic scheme involving a diisopropylamine-mediated proton transfer was proposed to rationalize the rearrangement.

Azabicyclo[4.3.0]nonanes were assembled, from chiral allylsilanes possessing an oxime moiety, using a stereocontrolled formal [2 + 2 + 2] radical-ionic process. The cascade involves the addition of an alpha-iodoester to the less substituted end of the enoxime which is then followed by a 5-exo-trig cyclization onto the aldoxime function, producing an alkoxyaminyl radical species which finally lactamizes to afford the titled piperidinone. High levels of stereoinduction were observed, demonstrating the ability of a silicon group located at the allylic position to efficiently control the stereochemistry of the two newly created stereogenic centers. When the radical cascade was extended to ketoximes, the resulting sterically hindered alkoxyaminyl radical did not react further with the initiator Et3B to produce the expected nucleophilic amidoborane complex. In sharp contrast, this long-lived radical recombined with the initial alpha-stabilized ester radical to produce a cyclopentane incorporating two ester fragments.

Birch reductive alkylation of 2-aminobiphenyls affords access to highly functionalized polyenes that react through a Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidative amination cascade or through a double 1,4-addition process to provide the tetracyclic skeleton of indole alkaloids with up to four stereogenic centers created in a single-pot operation.

[reaction: see text] Intramolecular hydroamination of cyclohexa-2,5-dienes led with high selectivity to the corresponding bicyclic allylic amines. This study demonstrates that the reaction does not proceed through a direct hydroamination of one of the diastereotopic olefins but more likely involves a diastereoselective protonation of a pentadienyl anion, followed by addition of a lithium amide across the double bond of the resulting 1,3-diene, and is concluded by a highly regioselective protonation of the final allylic anion.

Regioselectivity of the sulfonyl radical mediated 5-exo-trig cyclization of 3-silylheptadienyl systems 3a-d has been studied. At low temperature, the reaction of the sulfonyl radical occurs regioselectively at the allylsilane terminus, while a reversal of regioselectivity is observed at 80 degrees C. This general trend has been rationalized on the basis of polar effects and radical stabilization. Thiyl-mediated radical cyclization of dienes 3a, 3c-d, 7 with subsequent sulfur atom transfer was also studied, providing thiabicyclo[3.3.0] skeleton in one step with excellent stereocontrol.

[Chemical reaction: See text] Free-radical-mediated 5-exo-trig cyclization of hepta-1,6-dienes 6a-c incorporating an allylsilane moiety was shown to provide at low temperature exclusively the trans-cis cyclopentanes 7a-c in good yield. In contrast, the same reaction with the alkyl analogue 9a led to the formation of all four possible stereoisomers. Interestingly, extension of this sequence of radical processes to alkoxy analogues 12-14 provided the complementary cis-cis stereoisomers with modest to excellent stereoselectivity. It is noteworthy that under such conditions allylsilanes were found to be much more reactive than their alkyl and alkoxy analogues. Beckwith-Houk-type models were proposed that rationalize the stereochemical course of these 5-exo-trig cyclizations. Finally, an illustration of the value of this methodology was proposed with the synthesis of the A-B-C tricyclic unit of polyketide hexacyclinic acid 3a.

The respective affinities of various imidazole derivatives, imidazole (ImH), 2-methylimidazole (2-MeImH), 2-phenylimidazole (2-PhImH), N-methylimidazole (N-MeIm), 2-methylbenzimidazole (2-MeBzImH), and 4,5-dimethylbenzimidazole (4,5-Me(2)BzImH), for two phenanthroline (Phen) strapped zinc(II) porphyrin receptors porphen-Zn 1-Zn and 2-Zn have been studied. The formation of a supplementary H-bond considerably enhances the affinity of the zinc(II)-porphen receptor for imidazoles unsubstituted on the pyrrolic nitrogen (ImH) versus N-substituted imidazoles such as N-MeIm. The ImHs subset porphen-Zn complexes are formed with association constants up to 4 orders of magnitude superior to those measured either for N-MeIm as substrate or TPP-Zn as receptor. Distal or proximal binding of the substrates was determined by (1)H NMR measurements and titration. In two cases, the very high stability of the inclusion complex enabled the use of 2D NMR techniques. Excellent correlation between solution and solid-state structures has been obtained. A total of six X-ray structures are detailed in this article showing that the evolution of the shape of the zinc(II) receptor is mostly dependent on the steric constraints induced by the substitution on the imidazole. Hindered guests also progressively induce considerable mobility restrictions and severe distortions on the receptor, especially in the case of 2-MeBzImH and 2-PhImH.

C2-Substituted silacyclopent-3-enes have been prepared in good yields in two steps starting from commercially available diallylsilane 9. Coupling between carbanion of 9 and aldehydes or epoxides followed by ring-closing metathesis of the corresponding substituted diallylsilanes led to various silacyclopent-3-enes having a beta- or a gamma-hydroxysilane moiety. Dihydroxylation and epoxidation of the sila-cycle then led stereoselectively to polyhydroxylated silacyclopentanes. These processes were shown to occur with opposite topicity, offering a complementary and stereocontrolled access to diastereomeric polyols having up to five contiguous stereogenic centers.

Condensation of 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-beta-D-glucopyranosylcarbaldehyde with isolevoglucosenone induced by Et(2)AlI, followed by epoxidation, gave an aldol that was fluorinated into a monofluoromethylene C-glucopyranoside that was converted into the title C-disaccharide 1. Its conformational behavior in water has been studied by using a combination of NMR spectroscopy (J and NOE data) and molecular mechanics calculations.

At low temperature 1-alkoxy-1,3-dienes add to sulfur dioxide activated by a Lewis or Brønstedt acid and generate zwitterionic intermediates that can be quenched by enoxysilanes. The resulting beta,gamma-unsaturated silyl sulfinates can be desilylated and reacted with methyl iodide to provide polyfunctional sulfones. Exploratory studies of this four-component synthesis of sulfones are reported. Enantiomerically pure derivatives containing up to three new stereogenic centers can be obtained using enantiomerically pure (E,E)-1-alkoxy-2-methylpenta-1,3-dienes derived from alpha-methyl benzyl alcohols, including the Greene's chiral auxiliary. The stereochemistry of the reactions is consistent with a mechanism involving the suprafacial hetero-Diels-Alder addition of sulfur dioxide to the 1-alkoxy-1,3-dienes that are rapidly ionized into zwitterionic intermediates.

The planar aromatic tridentate ligand 2,6-bis(1-S-neopentylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine (L(11)) reacts with Ln(III) (Ln = La-Lu) in acetonitrile to give the successive complexes [Ln(L(11))(n)](3+) (n = 1-3). However, stability constants determined by spectrophotometry and NMR titrations show that formation of the tris complexes is not favored, log K(3) being around 1 for La(III) and Eu(III), while no such species could be evidenced for the smaller Lu(III) ion. The X-ray structures of L(11) (monoclinic, P2(1), a = 13.4850(12) A, b = 12.0243(11) A, c = 16.4239(14) A, beta = 103.747(7) degrees ), [La(ClO(4))(2)(L(11))(2)](3)[La(ClO(4))(2)(H(2)O)(L(11))(2)](ClO(4))(4).15MeCN (1a, monoclinic, P2(1), a = 21.765(4) A, b = 30.769(6) A, c = 21.541(5) A, beta = 116.01(3) degrees ), and [Eu(L(11))(3)](ClO(4))(3).4.28MeCN (5a, monoclinic, P1, a = 14.166(3) A, b = 19.212(4) A, c = 21.099(4) A, alpha = 108.91(3) degrees, beta = 98.22(3) degrees, gamma = 108.40(3) degrees ) have been solved. In 1a, two different types of complex cations are evidenced, both containing 10-coordinate La(III) ions. In the first type, both perchlorate anions are bidentate, while in the second type, one perchlorate is monodentate, the 10th coordination position being occupied by a water molecule. In 5a the three ligands are not equivalent. Ligands A and B are wrapped in a helical way and are mirror images of each other, while ligand C lies almost perpendicular to the two other ones. This stems from the steric hindrance generated by the bulky neopentyl groups with the consecutive loss of any stabilizing interstrand pi-stacking interactions. This explains the low stability of the tris complexes and the difficulty of isolating them and points to the importance of the steric factors in the design of self-assembled triple helical lanthanide-containing functional edifices [Ln(L(i))(3)](3+).
