Inthe present work, an excellent biological lubricant extractedfrom an aquatic plant called Brasenia schreberi(B.s)is reported. With a rotary cylinder-on-ring tribometer, the lubricationproperties of the B.s mucilage between quartz glass surfaces havebeen investigated under different rotation velocity, and an ultralowfriction coefficient between 0.004 and 0.006 is obtained. It is observedthat the ultralow friction coefficient is independent of the rotationspeed, when it is less than 0.1 m/s. SEM images indicate that themucilage surrounding B.s is composed of polysaccharide gels with alayered structure, which are called nanosheets in the following work.Moreover, it can be deduced that the liquid superlubricity is closelyrelated to the B.s mucilage layer absorbed on the quartz glass surfaceby hydrogen bonds and the superlubricity behavior only occurs whenthe adsorption layer stably forms between the quartz glass surfaceand the B.s mucilage. It is also found that superlubricity is closelydependent upon the sheet structure of the B.s mucilage and water moleculesin the mucilage. According to these results, a layered nanosheetslubrication mechanism has been revealed, i.e., the ultralow frictioncoefficient is due to the adsorption layer of polysaccharide on thequartz glass surface and the hydration layers of water molecules bondedon the polysaccharide nanosheets between the sliding surfaces. The effect of humidity on the lubricationproperty of glycerolsolution between steel surfaces has been investigated in this paper.A stable superlubricity with a friction coefficient about 0.006 hasbeen found under the relative humidity between around 40% RH and 50%RH. Especially, it is noted that the lubrication state can be switchedbetween superlubricity and nonsuperlubricity by adjusting humidity,which is attributed to the humidity-dependent hydrogen-bonding patternin the solution. The mechanism of such superlubricity is attributedto the hydrated layer of water between the surface layers, which isformed by hydrogen-bonded glycerol and water molecules and strongenough to bear load, absorbed on each side of the solid surfaces.The work has potential applications, providing a simple and environment-friendlyway to accomplish controllable superlubrication between steel pairs,which are commonly used in industry. The present work reports an excellent lubrication propertyof anaquatic plant called Brasenia schreberi(BS). Underwater superhydrophobic surfaces stand as a promising frontier in technological applications such as drag reduction, antifouling, and anticorrosion. Unfortunately, the air film, known as the plastron, on these surfaces tends to be unstable. To address this problem, active approaches have been designed to preserve or restore plastrons. In this work, a self-driven gas spreading superhydrophobic mesh (SHM) surface is designed to facilitate recovery of the plastron. The immersed SHM can be "wetted" by gas, even when the plastron is removed. We demonstrate that the injected gas can spread spontaneously along the SHM over a large area, which greatly simplifies the plastron replenishment process. By incorporating a locally coated gas-producing layer, we achieve rapid in situ plastron recovery and long-term immersion stability, extending the plastron lifespan by at least 48 times. We also provide a framework for designing an SHM with suitable structural dimensions for gas spreading. Furthermore, an SHM with asymmetric structural dimensions enables unidirectional gas transport by the capillary pressure difference. This SHM surface shows excellent drag reduction properties (37.2%) and has a high slip recovery coefficient (73.4%) after plastron loss. This facile and scalable method is expected to broaden the range of potential applications involving nonwetting-related fields.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) poses an important threat to human health, and its pathogenesis is the formation of atheromatous plaques in coronary ventricles. Compared to other biomarkers, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), which is involved in multiple processes of atherosclerosis, is a noticeable inflammatory biomarker related to CHD. Herein, using a multifunctional nanocomposite containing a CoFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) (AuNPs@CoFe PBA) as a sensing substrate, an electrochemiluminescent (ECL) immunosensor was developed for the highly sensitive detection of Lp-PLA2. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the PBA and AuNPs, the nanocomposite exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity and can catalyze the luminol-ECL reaction, amplifying the ECL signal by ∼29-fold. Meanwhile, the enlarged specific surface area of the nanocomposite and the presence of abundant AuNPs allow the immobilization of more antibody proteins, thereby improving the sensing response of the immunosensor. When the target Lp-PLA2 is captured by the antibody on the sensor surface, the sensor emits a reduced ECL signal because of the increased mass and electron transfer resistance due to the formation of the immune complex. Under optimized conditions, the constructed ECL immunosensor exhibits a broad linear range from 1 to 2200 ng/mL and a low detection limit of 0.21 ng/mL. Additionally, the ECL immunosensor exhibits high specificity, stability, and reproducibility. This work provides a new approach to diagnose CHD and broadened the application of the PBA in the field of ECL sensors.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) protein is considered to be a key biomarker that is closely associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The level of Aβ, particularly its subtle fluctuation, indicates early neuropathological changes, which poses a considerable challenge in predicting AD, considering the detection limit of sensing technologies. Herein, a new label-free sensor based on luminol electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was proposed by developing a close-packed monolayered-SiO 2 array with gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) entrapped in their gaps as the basal electrode. The well-organized SiO 2 NPs with a quasiphotonic crystal structure amplified the ECL signal via light scattering, while Au NPs amplified the signal by directly catalyzing luminol oxidation. Owing to the dual signal amplification, the proposed electrode furnished an ∼64-fold-intensified ECL signal of luminol as the sensing background. Further, the as-prepared ECL electrode served as the substrate to develop an aptasensor for the sensitive detection of Aβ. The inhibition of the ECL signal due to the suppressed diffusion of luminol to the sensor surface acts as an indicator to quantify the amount of Aβ. The transfer dynamics mechanism provides a label-free sensing strategy and facilitates the high sensitivity of the aptasensor for Aβ detection. Under optimal conditions, the developed aptasensor exhibits an ultrasensitive performance for Aβ with a very low limit of detection of 5 fM, providing a new prospect for clinical research on Aβ and a promising approach in the field of ECL sensing.

Humic acid (HA) has attracted increasing attention as a new type of organic fertilizer in horticultural production, such as greenhouse-planted cherry tomato. However, we need more information to evaluate the effects of HA on soil rhizosphere bacteria and tomato performance under greenhouse conditions. In this study, greenhouse-planted cherry tomato was observed with HA added at dosages of 1500, 3000, 4500, and 6000 kg·ha -1 , respectively. The other two organic fertilizers [farmyard manure (FM) and commercial organic fertilizer (COF)], were used as comparison with a dosage of 3000 kg·ha -1 . Illumina MiSeq sequencing was conducted for bacterial diversity analysis, and tomato quality analysis based on total soluble solids, titratable acid, and sugar-acid ratio was performed for different fertilizer treatments. The results revealed that HA application resulted in the best flavor, compared to CK without the organic fertilizer used and with the other two organic fertilizers. The Chaol estimator and Shannon index showed that fertilizer addition decreased microbial diversity but increased species richness. At a dosage of 3000 kg·ha -1 , the effects of different fertilizers were ranked as HA > FM > COF. A D-π-A-π-D type of tetraphenylene-coating benzoselenodiazole fluorescence dye with near-infrared emission has been designed and constructed. This dye shows an obvious aggregation-induced-emission behavior. In the solid state, it exhibits a reversible mechanochromism with the changes of near-infrared emission. Furthermore, this dye can be used to track the lysosomes of living cells and images in vivo.

In this study, ultralow friction coefficient (COF, μ < 0.01) was obtained through polyalkylene glycol (PAG) aqueous solutions with different molecular weights (MWs) ranging from 270 to 3930 g·mol -1 under ambient conditions. With the increase in the MWs of PAG molecules, the threshold concentration to obtain this type of superlubric behavior gradually changed from 90 to 60 wt %. This phenomenon was closely related to the interaction between PAG chains and water molecules and the state of chemical binding. In the superlubricity system, superior load-bearing capacity was achieved at optimal threshold concentrations of all PAG aqueous solutions wherein multilayered adsorption layers that consisted of fully hydrated PAG molecules were formed on the sliding solid surfaces. With respect to the concentration below the threshold value, the existence of a shearing layer was indicated to play a significant role. Thus, the synergetic effect of sufficient adsorption of molecules and the unique shear rheology of the PAG aqueous solution were essential to achieve superlubricity.

Graphene oxide (GO) has been evaluated as a multifunctional cross-linker or reinforcement agent in composite hydrogels. In this study, a nanocomposite hydrogel consisting of GO nanosheets and zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) was synthesized in an aqueous system via chemical and physical cross-linking effects. GO nanosheets were well dispersed in the hydrogels and effectively cross-linked into the sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) polymer chains through the electrostatic interactions. The PSBMA hydrogel exhibited a significant enhancement in the compressive stress (close to a 5-fold increase) and a remarkable reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) (corresponding to a decline of 52-76%) after the embedding of GO nanosheets. These improvements indicate the existence of synergetic interaction and good compatibility between GO nanosheets and the PSBMA hydrogel matrix, which results in an intertwined network structure with higher load-bearing capacity and better lubrication properties. This study provides potential in the development of new graphene-polymer composites, which is beneficial for cartilage replacement with high mechanical properties and excellent lubrication characteristics.

Liposomes have been considered as the boundary lubricant in natural joints. They are also the main component of bionic lubricant. In this study, the tribological properties of liposomes on Ti6Al4V/polymer surface were studied by atomic force microscope (AFM) at the nanoscale. The superlubricity with a friction coefficient of 0.007 was achieved under the maximal pressure of 15 MPa, consisting with the lubrication condition of natural joints. Especially, when the AFM probe was hydrophilically modified and preadsorbed, the friction coefficient and load bearing capacity could be further improved. In addition, the probe with a large radius could maintain the stable lubrication of liposomes in the contact zone. Finally, an optimal lubrication model of liposomes was established and the critical force for superlubricity was also proposed. It was the boundary between elastic deformation and plastic deformation for vesicles. It was also the indicator of the plough effect appearing on the adsorbed layer. This work reveals the interfacial behavior of liposomes and realizes the controllable superlubricity system, providing more guidance for clinical application.

In the present work, an interesting droplet self-retraction phenomenon of myristyltrimethylammonium bromide (C 14 TAB) solution on the superhydrophilic mica surface was observed. The self-retraction could only occur within a concentration range from 0.01 to 16 cmc. The maximum variation of the contact angle (from 24.99 to 76.85°) was observed in droplets with a concentration of 0.1 cmc. The self-retraction mechanism was studied based on high-speed photography, surface analyses, surface energy calculation, and model fitting. It was proved that there was a monolayer of C 14 TAB molecules adsorbed on the mica surface, which formed through the electrostatic interaction between the negative mica and the positively charged headgroups. The formation of this monolayer took only a short time of <67 ms since the droplet touched the surface, and the monolayer was well-distributed and hydrophobic with a surface free energy of 76.041 mJ/m 2 (20% of mica's surface free energy). The reduction of surface tension led to an imbalance at the borderline of the droplet, causing self-retraction. A model was established to simulate the self-retraction process and it agreed with the experimental data well. This study has significant implication in understanding the surface modification caused by surfactant molecules.

Black soybeans are rich in isoflavones, which have several beneficial health effects. In this study, a validated method based on UHPLC-MS/MS was developed to screen black-soybean metabolites in rat urine, bile, and plasma and to quantify the compounds (daidzein, genistein, glycitein, and daidzin) and their metabolites (daidzein-4'-β-d-glucuronide, genistein-7-β-d-glucuronide, and genistein-4'-β-d-glucuronide) in plasma. Thirty-seven compounds were tentatively detected in the biological samples. The method was fully validated in quantitative experiments, including in assessments of linearity (2.5-100 ng/mL for daidzein, genistein, and glycitein; 10-100 ng/mL for daidzin; 5-3125 ng/mL for genistein-7-β-d-glucuronide; and 5-1562.5 ng/mL for daidzein-4'-β-d-glucuronide and genistein-4'-β-d-glucuronide), matrix effects (85-115%), recovery (80-105%), precision (<10%), and accuracy (<10%). The compounds were stable throughout sample storage, treatment, and analysis. The method was first applied to detect IFs and metabolites in rats after oral administration of black-soybean extract. These results support the potential of this method for successful application in pharmacokinetic studies.

Nanotribology has been given increasing attention by researchers in pursuing the nature of friction. In the present work, an approach that combines the supramolecular assembly and nanotribology is introduced. Herein, the nanotribological study was carried out on seven supramolecular template networks [namely, hydrogen bond induced tricarboxylic acids and van der Waals force induced hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) derivatives]. The template networks, as well as the host-guest assemblies of template molecules induced by different forces, were constructed on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface and explicitly characterized using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Meanwhile, the nanotribological properties of the template networks were measured using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Together with the theoretical calculation using the density functional theory (DFT) method, it was revealed that the friction coefficients were positively correlated with the interaction strength. The frictional energy dissipation mainly derives from both the intermolecular interaction energy and the interaction energy between molecules and the substrate. The efforts not only help us gain insight into the competitive mechanisms of hydrogen bond and van der Waals force in supramolecular assembly but also shed light on the origin of friction and the relationship between the assembly structures and the nanotribological properties at the molecular level.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have been considered to have various applications in numerous fields. In the present work, a double-network (DN) hydrogel has been synthesized. The copolymers of 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AM) [P(AMPS- co-AM)] are prepared as the 1st network and poly(acrylic acid) as the 2nd network. This DN hydrogel is sensitive to glucose by introducing the glucose-sensitive group phenylboronic acid to the network. The tribological properties of this glucose-sensitive DN hydrogel have been investigated using a universal mechanical tester (UMT-5). The tribological results show that the friction coefficient varied with the glucose solution. The friction coefficient increased to a maximum of 0.06, and finally decreased to 0.025 with the increase in the glucose concentration. An adjustable friction coefficient of the hydrogel, between 0.025 and 0.056, was achieved along with the change of lubricant. According to the tribological experimental results and the analysis of the DN structure, it can be deduced that a hydrated layer exists in the interface of the hydrogel. The hydrated layers consisting of water molecules are bounded with the hydrophilic group of the hydrogel network by hydrogen bonds. The change in the number of water molecules leads to the difference in the water content of the hydrogel, which further resulted in the various tribological properties. In addition, the hydrogel's mesh size also has an impact on the change in friction coefficient. In general, the adjustable friction of the hydrogel in a glucose environment is achieved.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative genetic disorder caused by CAG repeat expansion in exon 1 of the HTT gene. Expression of the mutant gene results in the production of a neurotoxic polyglutamine (polyQ)-expanded huntingtin (Htt) protein. Clinical trials of knockdown therapy of mutant polyglutamine-encoding HTT mRNA in Huntington's disease (HD) have begun. To measure HTT mRNA knockdown effectiveness in human cells, we utilized a fluorescent hybridization imaging agent specific to the region encompassing the human HTT mRNA initiation codon. We designed, synthesized, purified, and characterized Cal560-spacer-peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-spacer-IGF1 tetrapeptides. The human HTT PNA 12mer complement was CATGGCGGTCTC, while the rat htt equivalent 12mer contained the sequence CATGaCGGcCTC, with two bases differing from the human sequence. The cyclized IGF1 tetrapeptide fragment d(CSKC) that promotes IGF1 receptor-mediated endocytosis was bonded to the C-terminus. We tested the reliability of HTT mRNA imaging with Cal560-spacer-peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-spacer-IGF1 tetrapeptides in human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293T cells that express endogenous HTT and IGF1 receptor. By qPCR, we quantitated HTT mRNA in HEK293T cells with and without HTT mRNA knockdown by three different siRNAs. By confocal fluorescence imaging, we quantitated the accumulation of fluorescent HTT hybridization agent in the same cells. A rat homologue differing from the human sequence by two bases showed negligible fluorescence. qPCR indicated 86 ± 5% knockdown of HTT mRNA by the most effective siRNA. Similarly, Cal560- HTT PNA-peptide fluorescence intensity indicated 69 ± 6% reduction in HTT mRNA. We concluded that the fluorescence hybridization method correlates with the established qPCR method for quantitating HTT mRNA knockdown by siRNA in HEK293T cells, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.865 for all three siRNA sequences. These results will enable real time imaging and quantitation of HTT mRNA in animal models of HD.

Wear occurs between two rubbing surfaces. Severe wear due to seizure under high pressure leads to catastrophic failures of mechanical systems and raises wide concerns. In this paper, a kind of synthetic oil-soluble ultrathin MoS 2 sheets is synthesized and investigated as lubricant additives between steel surfaces. It is found that, with the ultrathin MoS 2 sheets, the wear can be controlled under the nominal pressure of about 1 GPa, whereas the bearable nominal pressure for traditional lubricants is only a few hundred megapascals. It is found that when wear is under control, the real pressure between the asperities agrees with the breaking strength of ultrathin MoS 2 . Therefore, it is believed that, because of the good oil solubility and ultrasmall thickness, the ultrathin MoS 2 sheets can easily enter the contact area between the contacting asperities. Then, the localized seizure and further wear are prevented because there will be no metal-to-metal contact as long as the real pressure between the asperities is below the breaking strength of ultrathin MoS 2 . In this way, the upper limit pressure the lubricant can work is dependent on the mechanical properties of the containing ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) sheets. Additionally, ultrathin MoS 2 sheets with various lateral sizes are compared, and it is found that sheets with a larger size show better lubrication performance. This work discovers the lubrication mechanism of ultrathin MoS 2 sheets as lubricant additives and provides an inspiration to develop a novel generation of lubricant additives with high-strength ultrathin 2D materials.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of naturally occurring inorganic minerals that are composed of divalent and trivalent metal cations. In this study, three different sized NiAl-LDH nanoplatelets were synthesized by varying crystallization time during the microemulsification process. The layered structure and three-dimensional size of nanoplatelets were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). As lubricant additives, their tribological properties in base oil were evaluated by use of a ball-on-disk reciprocating tribometer under three different loads: 50, 100, and 150 N (which created peak Hertz pressures of 1.74, 2.16, and 2.47 GPa). Under contact pressures of up 2.16 GPa, not only did the coefficient of friction (COF) decrease by about 10% after nano-LDHs were added but also the wear performance improved substantially. These improvements resulted from a protective tribolayer formation on the contact interface, as revealed by detailed surface and structure analytical studies. In particular, cross-sectional TEM images revealed that the larger size nanoplatelets (NiAl-24h), rather than the smaller ones (NiAl-6h) showed the best and most stable tribological performance. This was mainly because of their higher degree of crystallinity, which in turn resulted in the formation of a tribofilm with far superior mechanical properties during sliding. Owing to the simple synthetic method and superior tribological properties as oil-based additives, nano-LDHs hold great potential for use in demanding industrial applications in the future.

Mesoporous silica has been developed for the modification of titanium surfaces that are used as implant materials. Yet, the traditional modification methods failed to effectively construct mesoporous silica on the titanium surface evenly and firmly, in which the interaction between mesoporous silica and titanium was mainly physical. Here, in situ growth of mesoporous silica on a titanium surface was performed using a simple evaporation-induced self-assembly strategy. Meantime, in situ introduction of drugs (heparin and vancomycin) to mesoporous silica was also adopted to improve the drug-loading amount. Both the above-mentioned processes were completed at the same time. Transmission electron microscopy, N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and water contact angle measurements were used to characterize the structure of the mesoporous silica film. Results indicated that the mesoporous silica film that in situ grew on the titanium surface was smooth, thin, transparent, and stable. Cytotoxicity, proliferation performance of osteoblast cells, and in vitro and in vivo studies of the antibacterial activity of the coating were tested. This is the first study to modify the titanium surface by the in situ growth of a mesoporous silica coating with two kinds of drugs. The stability of the mesoporous silica coating can be attributed to the chemical bonding between dopamine and silicon hydroxyl of the mesoporous silica coating, and the smooth surface of mesoporous silica is a result of the method of in situ growth. The large amount of drug-loading also could be ascribed to the in situ introduction of drugs during the synthetic process. The strategy proposed in this work will bring more possibilities for the preparation of advanced functional materials based on the combination of mesoporous structure and metallic materials.

On-surface synthesis has gradually become a prevalent approach to constructing two-dimensional functional monolayers on various substrates. In the present work, the synthesis of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of benzothiazole derivatives was conducted at the liquid/solid interface for the first time. Two kinds of nanostructures were achieved on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface via the condensation reaction between aromatic aldehyde derivatives and 2-aminothiophenol (ATP). The formation of thiazole-based self-assemblies was revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The successful synthesis of the benzothiazole derivatives not only extends the scope of on-surface reactions but also can be applied in designing multifunctional SAMs at the interface.

The carbon suboxide cation C 3 O 2 + and the protonated carbon suboxide HC 3 O 2 + /DC 3 O 2 + were produced in the gas phase. The vibrational spectra were measured via infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of their argon- or CO-tagged complexes. Spectroscopic evidence combined with state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations indicate that both cations have a bent C 2v symmetry and can be designated as dicarbonyls of a carbon cation and methylidyne cation, respectively.

Poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA) cross-linked networks on Ti 6 Al 4 V show superlubricity behavior when sliding against polytetrafluoroethylene in water-based lubricants. The superlubricity can occur but only with the existence of salt ions in the polymer cross-linked networks. This is different from the phenomenon in most polymer brushes. An investigation into the mechanism revealed that cations and anions in the lubricants worked together to yield the superlubricity even under harsh conditions. It is proposed that the preferential interactions of cations with PVPA molecules rather than water molecules are the main reason for the superlubricity in water-based lubricants. The interaction of anions with water molecules regulates the properties of the tribological interfaces, which influences the magnitude of the friction coefficient. Owing to the novel cross-linked networks and the interactions between cations and polymer molecules, their superlubricity can be maintained even at a high salt ion concentration of 5 M. These excellent properties make PVPA-modified Ti 6 Al 4 V a potential candidate for application in artificial implants.

Liposomes are widely used in drug delivery and gene therapy, and their new role as boundary lubricant in natural/artificial joints has been found in recent years. In this study, the tribological properties of liposomes on titanium alloy (Ti6Al4 V)/UHMWPE interface were studied by a ball-on-disc tribometer. The efficient reduction of friction coefficient and wear on both surfaces under various velocities and loads is found. A multilayer structure of physically adsorbed liposomes on Ti6Al4 V surface was also observed by atomic force microscope (AFM). Except for the hydration mechanism by phosphatidylcholine (PC) groups, the well-performed tribological properties by liposomes is also attributed to the existence of adsorbed liposome layers on both surfaces, which could reduce asperities contact and show great bearing capacity. This work enriches the research on liposomes for lubrication improvement on artificial surface and shows their value in clinical application.

Herein, we report a facile fabrication of a polymer (azobenzene and α-cyclodextrin-functionalized hyaluronic acid) and gold nanobipyramids (AuNBs) conjugated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to be used as an injectable drug delivery system for sustained cancer treatment. Because of the specific affinity between the hyaluronic acid (HA) on MSNs and the CD44 antigen overexpressed on tumor cells, the MSNs can selectively attach to tumor cells. The nanocomposite material then exploits thermoresponsive interactions between α-cyclodextrin and azobenzene, and the photothermal properties of gold nanobipyramids, to in situ self-assemble into a hydrogel under near-infrared (NIR) radiation. Upon gelation, the drug (doxorubicin)-loaded MSNs carriers were enclosed in the HA network of the hydrogel, whereas further degradation of the HA in the hydrogel due to the upregulation of hyaluronidase (HAase) around the tumor tissue will result in the release of MSNs from the hydrogel, which can then be taken by tumor cells and deliver their drug to the cell nuclei. This design is able to provide a microenvironment with rich anticancer drugs in, and around, the tumor tissue for time periods long enough to prevent the recrudescence of the disease. The extra efficacy that this strategy affords builds upon the capabilities of conventional therapies.

Poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA) is a type of hydrophilic polymer that can be used in surface modifications. In our study, PVPA coatings were formed on the surfaces of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) using a simple and novel method to achieve efficient lubrication at friction interfaces. The composition and 3D skeletal structure of the PVPA coatings were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM), and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The PVPA-modified Ti6Al4V/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) interface shows a superlow friction coefficient (approximately 0.006) for at least 8 h under a contact pressure of 44.2 MPa (initial pressure), which means it falls into the superlubricity regime. Moreover, wear on the surfaces of both the Ti6Al4V and PTFE after the tribological experiment is superlow. It is proposed that the 3D skeletal structure of the PVPA coating and fluid-like manner at friction interfaces owing to the fast exchange of water molecules are the main factors accounting for the superlow friction and wear. The PVPA-modified Ti6Al4V has the potential uses in artificial cervical discs.

Adhesion is a big concern for the design of Si-based microelectromechanical devices. A ZnO film with nanoscale surface roughness is a promising candidate to decrease adhesion as the protective coating. In this study, the adhesion force of ZnO films prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a Si (100) substrate was studied. The root-mean-square (RMS) roughness of the ZnO films was in the range of 0.7-4.28 nm, and the contact angle of water was in the range of 85-88°. The adhesion force was measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) at both low (12%) and high (60%) relative humidities. The results show that the adhesion force decreases as the surface roughness increases. A low adhesion force at high RMS roughness is attributed to the large asperities on the film, and a large adhesion force at high humidity is attributed to the large capillary force. The experimental adhesion force was compared to the force calculated using the Rabinovich model. Although the theoretical value underestimates the experimental value, the proportion of the two components of the adhesion force is clearly shown. At the low humidity, the van der Waals force component differs not greatly with the capillary force component, while at the high humidity, the capillary force component becomes dominant.

In this work, superlubricity between glass and Si(3)N(4) surfaces lubricated by mixtures of acid solutions and glycerol solutions has been found by using a traditional tribometer. Ultralow friction coefficients of between 0.004 and 0.006 were obtained after a running-in period. Related experiments indicate that the hydrogen ions in the mixtures play an important role in achieving superlubricity. Moreover, the ultralow friction is also closely related to the pH value of the acid and the concentration of glycerol. According to these results, the possible superlubricity mechanism has been revealed, which is attributed to a fluid-hydrated water layer between the hydrogen-bonded networks of glycerol and water molecules on the positively charged surfaces.
