We report on the nanostructures of organic small-moleculepentacenecrystals that have been vapor-deposited onto the capillary wave surfacesof thin liquid films. The characteristic lateral length of the capillarywave surface or the capillary length can be controlled by changingthe thickness of the liquid films and, thus, the van der Waals interactionwith the substrate. We find that the morphology of the organic crystalsgradually varies from fractals to compact islands as the liquid filmthickness increases. The square of average distance between organiccrystal grains was also found to be proportional to the liquid filmthickness. We discuss the possibility that these effects are drivenby capillary fluctuations at the air–liquid interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pressure-induced polymerization of aromatics is an effective method to construct extended carbon materials, including the diamond-like nanothread and graphitic structures, but the reaction pressure of phenyl is typically around 20 GPa and too high to be applied for large-scale preparation. Here by introducing ethynyl to phenyl, we obtained a sp 2 -sp 3 carbon nanoribbon structure by compressing 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene (TEB), and the reaction pressure of phenyl was successfully decreased to 4 GPa, which is the lowest reaction pressure of aromatics at room temperature. Using experimental and theoretical methods, we figured out that the ethynylphenyl of TEB undergoes [4 + 2] dehydro-Diels-Alder (DDA) reaction with phenyl upon compression at an intermolecular C···C distance above 3.3 Å, which is much longer than those of benzene and acetylene. Our research suggested that the DDA reaction between ethynylphenyl and phenyl is a promising route to decrease the reaction pressure of aromatics, which allows the scalable high-pressure synthesis of nanoribbon materials.

The 1,8-naphthalimide (NI) derivative Lumogen F Violet 570 exhibits different photoluminescence (PL) and aggregation-caused quenching properties due to its crystal polymorphism, which depends on the solvent evaporation process in tetrahydrofuran solution. In the slow drying process, molecules aggregated into an energetically more stable form (time-dependent density functional theory calculation), of which the PL peak maximum was 453 nm, corresponding to blue emission at the 365 nm excitation. However, the fast evaporation process induces an energetically less stable form, with a PL peak maximum of 508 nm, corresponding to green emission. The main difference between the two crystal structures is the alkyl conformation, as confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analysis. Due to the different alkyl conformations, NI groups aggregated into more obliquely aligned structures that emit blue PL, which plays a role in weakening the π-π interactions between molecules relative to green PL crystals. We report femtosecond infrared laser-induced selective tailoring of carrier transport as well as surface morphology on a conducting polymer blend thin film. Maximal 2.4 times enhancement on vertical current transport in poly(3-hexylthiophene):phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, was achieved by this irradiation. The laser irradiation induced a photo expansion without deteriorating its molecular structure and the film morphology could be customized in the micron scale by adjusting the laser writing parameters. In the photoexpanded region, the face-on populations were about 2.2 times larger in comparison with the pristine region, which was a major contributor to the enhanced carrier transport.

Herein we report the influence of a ZrO2 underlayer on the PEC (photoelectrochemical) behavior of hematite nanorod photoanodes for efficient solar water splitting. Particular attention was given to the cathodic shift in onset potential and photocurrent enhancement. Akaganite (β-FeOOH) nanorods were grown on ZrO2-coated FTO (fluorine-doped tin oxide) substrates. Sintering at 800 °C transformed akaganite to the hematite (α-Fe2O3) phase and induced Sn diffusion into the crystal structure of hematite nanorods from the FTO substrates and surface migration, shallow doping of Zr atoms from the ZrO2 underlayer. The ZrO2 underlayer-treated photoanode showed better water oxidation performance compared to the pristine (α-Fe2O3) photoanode. A cathodic shift in the onset potential and photocurrent enhancement was achieved by surface passivation and shallow doping of Zr from the ZrO2 underlayer, along with Sn doping from the FTO substrate to the crystal lattice of hematite nanorods. The Zr based hematite nanorod photoanode achieved 1 mA/cm(2) at 1.23 VRHE with a low turn-on voltage of 0.80 VRHE. Sn doping and Zr passivation, as well as shallow doping, were confirmed by XPS, Iph, and M-S plot analyses. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the presence of a ZrO2 underlayer decreased the deformation of FTO substrate, improved electron transfer at the hematite/FTO interface and increased charge-transfer resistance at the electrolyte/hematite interface. This is the first systematic investigation of the effects of Zr passivation, shallow doping, and Sn doping on hematite nanorod photoanodes through application of a ZrO2 underlayer on the FTO substrate.

We demonstrate that the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in single crystalline VO(2) nanowires is strongly mediated by surface stress as a consequence of the high surface area to volume ratio of individual nanowires. Further, we show that the stress-induced antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phase is critical in controlling the spatial extent and distribution of the insulating monoclinic and metallic rutile phases as well as the electrical characteristics of the Mott transition. This affords an understanding of the relationship between the structural phase transition and the Mott MIT.
