We report on an electroluminescent diode emitting red, green, and blue light simultaneously. The device is based on a thin polymer layer, poly[3‐(4‐octylphenyl)‐2,2’‐bithiophene] and a thick molecular layer, 2‐(4‐biphenylyl)‐5‐(4‐tertbutyl‐phenyl)1,3,5‐oxadiazole. The quantum efficiency for light conversion is 0.3% and the turn‐on voltage for light emission is 7 V. In this article we present electric and spectroscopic characterizations. A mechanism for the light emission, based on electron and hole recombination between the two organic layers, is proposed.

An all-organic printed electrochemical rectifier is reported. The device is based on a patterned layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) that interfaces a patterned electrolyte top layer. Overlap between the electrolyte layer and the conducting polymer pattern results in the formation of two electrochemically active areas within the conducting polymer pattern. When bias voltage is applied across the conducting polymer pattern, the PEDOT in the negatively biased areas is reduced electrochemically, while the PEDOT in the positively biased area is further oxidized. Reducing PEDOT from its p-doped, pristine state to the neutral state results in a marked loss of electrical conductivity. Due to the unsymmetrical device geometry, the current through the device may be shut off for one polarity of applied bias voltage with an electrical current rectification ratio of 100 compared to the opposite polarity. The output characteristics of a corresponding half wave rectifier as well as those from a full wave bridge rectifier show stable performance at frequencies below 15 Hz.

Optically pumped stimulated emission and lasing in thin films of an absorbing host 8-hydroxyquinolinato aluminum(Alq) doped with small amounts of the laser dye DCM II is observed. Forster transfer of the excitation from the Alq molecules to the DCM II molecules results in a high absorption coefficient at pump wavelength (337 nm) as well as low absorption loss at the emission wavelengths (610–650 nm).

We report electroluminescence from a regioregular alkyl-phenyl substituted polythiophene. The polymer film exists in two forms, giving widely different optical absorption, as well as photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra. In the low-bandgap form, we observe high emission intensity centered at 1.55 eV (800 nm), well into the infrared, while the high-bandgap form gives a maximum at 1.85 eV (670 nm). The conversion from the high-bandgap form to the low-bandgap form can be done by thermal treatment of the polymer light emitting diodes.

Complementary circuits, processing digital signals, are a cornerstone of modern electronics. Such circuits require both p-and n-type transistors. Polyelectrolytes are used as gate insulators in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) to establish an electric double layer capacitor upon gate bias that allows low operational voltages (andlt;1 V). However, stable and low-voltage operating n-channel organic transistors have proven difficult to construct. Here, we report ultra-low voltage n-channel organic polymer-based transistors that are stable in ambient atmosphere. Our n-type OTFTs exhibit on/off ratios around 10(3) for an applied drain potential as low as 0.1 V. Since small ions are known to promote electrochemical reactions within the semiconductors channel bulk and typically slow down the transistor, we use a solid polycationic gate insulator that suppresses penetration of anions into the n-channel semiconductor. Short-channel, vertically structured organic transistors with a polyelectrolyte as gate insulator are demonstrated. The devices are fabricated using low-resolution, self-aligned, and mask-free photolithography. Owing to the use of a polyelectrolyte, our vertical electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistors (VEGOFETs), with channel lengths of 2.2 and 0.7 μm, operate at voltages below one volt. The VEGOFETs show clear saturation and switch on and off in 200 μs. A vertical geometry to achieve short-transistor channels and the use of an electrolyte makes these transistors promising candidates for printed logics and drivers with low operating voltage. Using organic electrochemical transistors as sensors, the sample-receptor reaction often induces moderate changes only in the drain current dynamics as the gate voltage level is switched. Here, we report an electrochemical sensor circuit including electrochemical transistors based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with polystyrenesulfonate that puts out a static sensor response signal. The circuit includes a sample and a reference transistor that are both driven in the resistive mode at 0.1 V. Measurements were performed on aqueous salt electrolytes ranging from 100 to 500 mM concentrations. The signal-ON sensor circuit provides a tenfold increase in the sensitivity as compared to single transistor sensors.

The addressability of organic impedance switch devices as the memory elements of cross-point matrices is improved by introducing nonlinear behavior in their current-voltage characteristics. This is realized by adding a semiconducting layer of copper (II) phthalocyanine (CuPc) on top of the switch layer of Rose Bengal (RB) sodium salt. Leakage currents from unaddressed cells in a matrix are reduced by a factor of 17; thus improving the signal-to-background ratio, reducing driver currents and limiting the potential drop along the addressing lines. The matrix size of RB switch devices, using organic conductors, is predicted to be increased by 32 times when using the additional CuPc layer.

In organic-based (opto)electronic devices, charge injection into conjugated materials is governed to a large extent by the metal-organic interface dipole. Controlling the injection of charges requires a better understanding of the fundamental origin of the interface dipole. In this context, photoelectron spectroscopies and density functional theory calculations are used to investigate the interaction between para-phenylenediamine (PPDA), an electron donor, and a polycrystalline nickel surface. The interface dipole formed upon chemisorption of one PPDA monolayer strongly modifies the work function of the nickel surface from 5.10 to 3.55 eV. The work function decrease of 1.55 eV is explained by the electron-donor character of PPDA and the modification of the electronic density at the metal surface. PPDA monolayers are composed of tilted molecules interacting via the nitrogen lone-pair and PPDA molecules chemisorbed parallel to the surface via their pi-electron density. Annealing the monolayer leads to dehydrogenation of PPDA activated by the nickel surface, as found for other amines.
