Artificial sand cementation improves stability, stiffness, and mechanical strength, making it a critical process in geotechnical applications. This study analyzes the capability of the porosity–water/binding agent index (η C w / B i v ) to predict cemented sands' unconfined compressive strength (q u) and stiffness (G o) . Four Colombian sands, i.e., Luruaco, Medellín, Lorica, and Bogotá (stabilized with Portland cement), and were compared with three Brazilian sands: i.e., Osorio, Porto Alegre, and Rio Pardo were evaluated, stabilized with combinations of carbide lime and glass powder, using varying binder contents and a curing period of seven days subjected to ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests. The results indicate that incorporating water content into the index significantly enhances predictive accuracy, achieving R
2 values above 0.94 for Colombian sands and considerably better fits for Brazilian sands than the traditional porosity/binder index. This new alternative provides an appropriate parameter for representing the small-strain stiffness and unconfined compressive strength of artificially cemented sands stabilized with various types of binders. Furthermore, the new index proved to be more effective in predicting the behavior of uniform and loose-graded sands, such as those from Bogotá and Lorica, which rely more heavily on binder volume and water content to achieve greater strength and stiffness. Lastly, the predictive model, validated against experimental results, achieved reliability indices (R2 ) of 0.9791 for stiffness and 0.9799 for strength prediction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Background: Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses in Colombia. Various insecticides, including pyrethroid, organophosphate, and carbamate insecticides; growth regulators; and biological insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, have been used to control Ae. aegypti populations. However, organophosphates such as malathion, pirimiphos-methyl, and temephos have been used over the last decade owing to the high resistance to pyrethroids. Methods: This study assessed the susceptibility to organophosphates in 14 Ae. aegypti populations from the Córdoba department in northern Colombia. Moreover, possible resistance mechanisms were investigated by determining the activity levels of α-esterases, β-esterases, mixed function oxidases (MFOs), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), and insensitive acetylcholinesterase (iAChE). Additionally, the Ace-1 gene was sequenced to identify mutations at the target site of action. Results: The populations were susceptible to temephos and malathion but resistant to fenitrothion, and in three of them, to pirimiphos-methyl. Alterations in the enzyme activity levels of α-esterases and β-esterases, GST, and iAChE were observed among the populations, with high enzyme activity levels of α and β esterases associated with resistance to fenitrothion. No mutations were identified in the Ace-1 gene. Conclusions: These findings are highly relevant for vector control programs in the region, as they allow for adjustments in resistance management strategies and improve the effectiveness of interventions against these arboviruses. - Abstract
Murine-related helminthiasis is a frequently overlooked zoonotic disease with significant public health implications. The role of murine rodents in transmitting these infections to other animals remains under-researched. This study aimed to investigate murine-related helminth infections at solid waste sites, particularly in forest-adjacent communities where murine rodent populations are high and multi-host interactions are possible. During a 5-day trapping session, 36 live traps were deployed across different habitats during both wet and dry seasons. Trapped murine rodents and their gastrointestinal (GI) parasites were morphologically evaluated for species identification. The results revealed that a total of 380 murine rodents were captured, with an overall GI helminth infection prevalence of 86.8% (330/380). The adult male murine rodents exhibited higher prevalence, abundance, and species richness of helminths compared to juvenile and female murine rodents. A total of 16 helminth species were identified, with Trichostrongylus morphotype A showing the highest infection prevalence (53.2%). Six zoonotic species were also detected, including Syphacia obvelata (22.4%), Syphacia muris (12.4%), Raillietina spp. (10.8%), Hymenolepis diminuta (10.3%), Vampirolepis nana (10%), and Cyclodontostomum purvisi (2.4%). Increased population of murine rodents was observed at the solid waste sites, as indicated by higher trap success (TS) rates. Forest murine rodents exhibited a significant prevalence of helminth infections and high species diversity. These findings suggest that solid waste sites adjacent to forests may pose a heightened risk for disease transmission, warranting further attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Work environments that support patient safety initiatives are important for quality service and patient outcomes. The relationship between the leadership behaviours of nurse managers and safety culture, which has the potential to support these initiatives, constitutes one of the most important knowledge gaps., Objectives: The study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses' perceived leadership behaviours and hospital safety culture and the factors affecting them., Design: We tested the theoretical model using structural equation modelling with the AMOS 21 program., Methods: The research was conducted with 134 nurses in two public hospitals in the south of Türkiye. Data were collected between October and December 2021 using the Leadership Behaviour Questionnaire and the Patient Safety Culture Hospital Questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analysis used to evaluate the data of the study. Structural equation modelling analysis and confirmatory factor analysis performed to test the research hypotheses., Results: The study found that non-punitive attitudes towards the mistakes had a full mediating effect on overall perception of safety interaction with employee-oriented leadership and high-level hospital interventions (β = -0.510, 95% CI -1.006/-0.076), and change had partly mediating effect on overall perception of safety interaction with change-oriented leadership (β = -0.510, 95% CI -1.043/-0.053)., Conclusions: It is clear that if nurse managers are to improve the staff's patient safety culture, they should develop change-oriented leadership skills by identifying adverse events and risks and motivating staff to learn from errors without taking punitive measures. In this context, healthcare organizations should evaluate the leadership qualities of managers. Managers at all levels can make plans to develop leadership behaviours that will play a facilitating role in improving patient safety., (© 2025 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

- Abstract
Background: Rodent pests threaten agricultural cropping systems, impacting food security and small-holder farmers' income in cereal-growing areas., Results: This study investigated knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAPs) toward rodents infesting Moroccan cereal crops through a survey of 100 farmers in two regions (Rabat-Sale-Kenitra and Fes-Meknes). A constructive questionnaire about all rodent aspects was created and distributed to the farmers. Rodent infestation is perceived in most fields (80%), with Mus musculus (28%) and Rattus rattus (26%) being the most prevalent species. Farmers perceived rodents negatively (> 90%), considering them as a major threat. Most of the control attitudes against rodent infestation were positive when continuously established and promoted. The farmer profile was shown to influence rodent knowledge and control attitude. Younger, educated, and experienced farmers understood rodent damage trends better and adopted environmental-friendly management practices, while older, inexperienced respondents preferred to use rodenticides instead., Conclusion: The study revealed novel insights into rodent problems in Moroccan cereal fields and urged the need for ecologically-based rodent management (EBRM) practices. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.)

- Abstract

- Abstract
An illustrated study of Rome's key enemies from the Late Principate and Dominate: the western Visigoths and the eastern Ostrogoths. The Goths were a Germanic people who, under pressure from the Huns, migrated during the 2nd century AD to the Balkans, where they split into the Visigoths to the west, and the Ostrogoths to the east. After first raiding and looting Roman territory, some eventually came to serve as allies to the Empire, but this allegiance would collapse following a Hun advancement that saw the Goths forced south against the Danube. Failure to negotiate settlement in this new, Roman-held territory led to wars, during which the Ostrogoths won a decisive victory over a Roman army at Adrianople (AD 378), and the Visigoths finally sacked Rome itself (AD 410).In this fascinating study, Roman military historians Raffaele D'Amato and Andrea Salimbetiand Andrea Salimbeti examine Rome's fierce clashes with the Gothic peoples, exploring their role in the fall of the Western Empire and eventual transition from Roman to early medieval Europe. Newly commissioned artwork, artefact photos and expert research combine to bring to life key events in the Goths'history, including the Ostrogoths'defeat by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, the establishment of Gothic kingdoms in Italy and the Iberian Peninsula, and their service as subjects and soldiers in Byzantine Crimea.

- Abstract
'The Roman Empire'presents a comprehensive exploration of one of history's most influential civilizations, examining how a modest Italian settlement evolved into a dominant world power that shaped modern society. The book uniquely weaves together three crucial elements of Roman imperial might: its formidable military system, sophisticated administrative framework, and effective cultural mechanisms. Through this integrated approach, readers gain a deeper understanding of how these components worked in harmony to maintain Roman dominance for over five centuries. The narrative progresses chronologically from Augustus's transformation of the Republic into an Empire, through periods of expansion, consolidation, and eventual transformation. A particular strength lies in its examination of the Roman military's dual nature as both a conquering force and a vector for civilization, spreading Roman culture and technology throughout conquered territories. The book demonstrates how Rome's remarkable ability to adapt and integrate diverse peoples while maintaining its core institutions created a sustainable model of governance that weathered numerous challenges. Drawing from archaeological findings, contemporary histories, and administrative records, the work offers fresh insights into Roman military organization, logistics, and administrative systems. What sets this book apart is its accessible presentation of complex historical concepts, making it valuable for both military history enthusiasts and general readers. The author's analysis reveals how many modern military and political challenges parallel those faced by Roman administrators, offering relevant lessons for contemporary readers interested in institutional development and international relations.

- Abstract
Hold the glory—and infamy—of ancient Rome in the palm of your hand with this “brilliant combination of history and storytelling” (Conn Iggulden, author of the Emperor series) as it explores history's greatest superpower, as told through humanity's most universal object: the coin. When Gareth Harney was first given a Roman coin as a child, he became entranced by its beauty, and its unique ability to connect us with the past. He soon learned that the Romans saw coins as far more than just currency—these were metal canvases on which they immortalized their sacred gods, mighty emperors, towering monuments, and brutal battles of conquest. Revealed in those intricate designs struck in gold, silver, and bronze was the epic story of the Roman Empire. Now, with his “novel and highly readable” (Philip Matyszak, author of The Blood-Red Sunset) voice and engaging research, Harney traces ancient Rome's rise, from a few huts on an Italian hilltop to an all-conquering empire spanning three continents, through the fascinating lives of twelve remarkable coins. A unique and enthralling “combination of history and expert storytelling” (Emma Southon, author of A History of the Roman Empire in 21 Women) for all history buffs.

- Abstract
'Ancient World Lore'presents a groundbreaking exploration of forgotten civilizations, challenging traditional views about the sophistication and interconnectedness of ancient societies. The book weaves together archaeological evidence, historical records, and cutting-edge scientific research to reveal how early human innovations continue to influence our modern world. Through a carefully structured narrative, it demonstrates that ancient civilizations were far more technologically advanced and interconnected than previously believed, with innovations spreading rapidly across vast networks of trade and cultural exchange. The text illuminates three fundamental themes: the emergence of early urban centers, the evolution of technological capabilities, and the extensive trade networks that facilitated cultural exchange. Drawing from interdisciplinary sources, including archaeogenetics and paleoclimatology, the book presents fascinating insights into how ancient societies from Mesopotamia to the Indus Valley developed sophisticated solutions to universal challenges. For instance, recent archaeological discoveries have revealed advanced metallurgy techniques and architectural innovations that predate conventional historical timelines. Progressing from a methodological framework through specific case studies to modern applications, the book demonstrates how ancient solutions can inform contemporary challenges such as sustainable urban planning and resource management. The work's unique value lies in its integration of traditional historical analysis with modern scientific methods, making complex historical concepts accessible while maintaining scholarly rigor. This approach provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of how ancient societies functioned and evolved, spanning from 10,000 BCE to 500 CE, while acknowledging ongoing debates and new discoveries in the field.

This volume brings together the results of the conference held on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the Bonn Treaty of 7 November 921, during which the West Frankish King Charles III and the East Frankish King Henry I met on the Rhine near Bonn. The contributors take this particular meeting of rulers as their starting point, contextualise it as a stage in the disintegration of the Frankish empire and take an interdisciplinary, comparative look at other pre-modern summit meetings. The case studies range from the third pre-Christian to the 17th post-Christian century.

- Abstract

- Author

Beatrice Daskas and Beatrice Daskas
- Abstract

48. Rome's Greatest Emperor: Vespasian

- Abstract
Follow Vespasian's rise from Roman general in Britain to emperor, shaping the Flavian dynasty during Rome's turbulent civil war.To anyone scanning the sea from the southern coast of Britain in the year 43 AD, the sight of hundreds of ships appearing one by one as dots on the horizon would have filled them with awe and dread. On a leading warship, a hundred and twenty oarsmen heaved at their work as one of the four legionary legates scanned the cliff tops expecting to see them lined with warriors as Julius Caesar had described nearly a hundred years before. Vespasian would lead the Second Augusta in the initial invasion and in a remarkable campaign across southern Britain, capturing a score of strongholds, oppida, such as the formidable Maiden Castle, along the way.His career later suffered from the intrigues of court politics during the reign of Nero, at one point making the near-fatal mistake of falling asleep during one of the emperor's artistic performances. Vespasian's fortunes were revived by the outbreak of revolt in Judea. Thus Vespasian found himself in the right place at the right time commanding a vast battle-hardened victorious army as the empire descended into civil war and chaos. The year 68-69 became known as ‘The Year of the Four Emperors'as, after Nero's suicide, Galba, Otho and Vitellius seized the throne in quick succession. When Vitellius emerged as the victor Vespasian took his chance. It would prove a pivotal moment in Rome's history, stabilizing the political and economic situation, and establishing the Flavian dynasty.

49. The Roman Auxiliary Units of Britain

- Abstract
This comprehensive work details the auxiliary units of Roman Britain, covering their histories, movements, campaigns, and notable members. The majority of work on Roman Britain's military focuses on the legions, with much less attention paid to the auxilia, even though the latter formed the vast majority of the manpower. The auxiliary units were drawn from all over the Empire and provided both infantry and cavalry units, many of which provided specialisms that the legions lacked. For example, the Cohors I Hamiorum Sagittariorum were a cohort of archers from Syria stationed at Carvoran fort on Hadrian's Wall.Simon Turney, following decades of research, presents this work, referencing every one of the fifty-nine auxiliary units identified in Britain. For each there is a unit history, detailing their movements, involvement in campaigns and anything noteworthy. This is followed by a set of lists detailing known, attested members of the unit and any inscriptions that mention them. Each entry is also accompanied by photographs and/or maps, including the sites the unit occupied, tombstones, images, inscriptions and so on. This is the finest, most up-to-date reference available for the auxiliary units of Britain.

50. Writing Embodiment in Victorian Microscopy : Beautiful Mechanism

- Abstract
Writing Embodiment in Victorian Microscopy examines a revolutionary period in microscopical technology and practice. At first considered a mere toy, by 1900 the microscope rivaled the railway and telegraph as an emblem of modernity and enjoyed an astonishing diversity of applications. This technology could drive scientific debates on subjects like cell theory, vitalism, and bacteriology; guide workers in classrooms, laboratories, and businesses; and inspire a personal hobby or a mass entertainment. Victorian microscopy productively cuts across the ostensibly separate domains of science, religion, commerce, art, education, entertainment, and domestic life. Writing Embodiment reads nineteenth-century microscopy across scientific, literary, religious, and popular texts. It argues that Victorian microscopists saw their vision and cognition as fully embodied experiences, the images emerging through a material entanglement of bodies (observer, instrument, apparatus, object) in a dynamic, unstable system. These ideas echo the work of physiological psychologists, who proposed mind as a system of embodied, distributed, and dynamic processes shaped by automatic or unconscious reflex action, attention, mental training, and fatigue. Striving to regulate this complex system, microscopists circulated tropes of embodiment through the varied forms of nineteenth-century print culture. They adapted existing concepts (such as beauty, the sublime, natural theology, and fairylands), or coined new phrases (such as many-sided comprehension), to promote favored forms of embodiment and enculturate microscopy as a difficult but valuable pursuit. Beautiful Mechanism draws on important work in book history and periodical studies by emphasizing the circulation of these tropes in intermedial conversations across diverse print forms. Victorians understood wonder and skepticism not as incommensurate approaches to scientific observation but rather as complementary forms of embodiment. Romantic tropes of wonder solicit affective flows from observer to wriggling animalcule and back; while skeptical, realist tropes offer to train the reader's eye, hand, body, and judgment and to formalize microscopical practice. Microscopical narratives may manipulate wonder and skepticism in productive tension or create virtual storyspaces that enlist the reader in virtual witnessing. These tropes shape every level of microscopical interest and proficiency. By analyzing their use and circulation, Writing Embodiment illuminates wider patterns of Victorian thought on embodiment, scientific practice, and community.
