Liquid crystal films play a key role in advancing next-generation optical and photonic devices that require a precise in-plane modulation of optical anisotropy. This study employs multiphoton direct laser writing, a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) printing method, to fabricate pseudoperiodic patterns of lines and grooves on glass surfaces for the in-plane alignment of liquid crystal films. Single layers of lines with submicron thickness and line spacing were fabricated in less than half an hour and forced the in-plane alignment of a liquid crystal film with a thickness of about 10 μm. We validate the method on patterns with singular topologies designed to induce the nucleation of disclination defects with a predetermined spatial arrangement, orientation, and topological strength. Compared to other surface patterning methods, high-resolution 3D printing provides the unique advantage of direct surface fabrication, enabling the creation of nonflat geometries such as terraces and lenses and expanding the design and functionalities of liquid crystal devices. We anticipate that this method will be used to create thin-film devices such as polarization gratings, beam steerers, and q-plates for manipulating polarized and structured light. The use of lactose and cow milk protein (CMP) as potential allergens in pharmaceuticals and their ability to cause allergic reactions remains a significant concern in medicine. Lactose, a common pharmaceutical excipient due to its inert, inexpensive, and stable properties, is found in many prescription-only and over-the-counter medications. However, despite their widespread use, individuals with lactose intolerance (LI) or cow milk protein allergy (CMPA) may experience adverse reactions to these excipients. This study investigated the prevalence of lactose and other dairy-derived ingredients in pharmaceuticals marketed in Portugal. Using the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) from the INFOMED database, various medications, including analgesics, antipyretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and antiasthmatics, were analyzed. Results showed a high prevalence of dairy-derived excipients, particularly in antiasthmatic drugs (62.6%) and NSAIDs (39%). Although CMP are not explicitly mentioned in SmPCs, the presence of lactose as an ingredient poses a risk of cross-contamination. The findings emphasize the need for healthcare professionals to be aware of potential allergens in medications and the importance of developing lactose-free alternatives to ensure the safety of patients with LI and CMPA. Organ transplantation is a surgical procedure that consists of awarding an organ. Considering that the transplantation of an organ or tissue is very competitive, due to the low rate of donors and as the function of the liver is preserved even in controlled schistosomatic fibrosis, it is possible to donate the organ even with the liver infected by verminosis. By analyzing the prevalence and evolution of liver donors with schistosomiasis in liver transplants performed at Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo - HCFMUSP. This is a descriptive study, consisting of a series of cases, with a retrospective and cross-sectional analysis. The study evaluated the medical records of patients being followed up at the Liver Transplant Outpatient Clinic, at HCFMUSP, from January 2002 to December 2020. The Department of Pathology at USP found 16 patients with records of schistosomiasis reports, of which only one was effective as a donor, since the other patients were excluded due to the state of law of the organ. An analysis showed that almost all donors were men with schistosomiasis with a mean age of 52.55 years. In this context, there was a prevalence of a case of a liver donor with the hepatointestinal form of schistosomiasis, later the organ was transplanted, and the recipient, presented a good evolution until this moment, having been analyzed clinically and laboratory. It is noteworthy that this is the first HCFMUSP study that evaluates liver donors with schistosomiasis mansoni and the evolution of the respective recipient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bio‐inspired and biodegradable quantum optics scenarios constitute a pathway toward environmentally friendly front‐end technologies. Such an inspiring perspective necessitates the replacement of classic gain materials with a biological counterpart like photoluminescent bacteria. It is easy to imagine that, in this case, a planar and cell‐viable substitute of classic bulk solid‐states resonators can be highly beneficial. In this paper a micro‐ and nano‐photonic structuration of both a standard and a functionalized version of a typical bacterial growth medium (Luria‐Bertani Agar – LBA) is successfully realized. Three structures belonging to the categories of photonic crystals are replicated, such as quasi‐crystals and meta‐surfaces, demonstrating how the proposed media can be used as templates for high‐end photonic applications. The optical quality of the replicated structures is confirmed by far‐field diffraction measurements. The structured growth media allow for a broad control of the surface wettability by accessing a so‐called Wenzel state, in which the original hydrophilicity of a material is increased due to the photonic structuration. Finally, the suitability of the nano‐structured LBA as a plasmonic platform is evidenced. The proposed micro‐and nano‐structured photonic growth media constitute the first, fundamental step toward quantum optical frameworks from biological media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Schistosomiasis, a widespread parasitic disease caused by the blood fluke of the genus Schistosoma , affects over 230 million people, primarily in developing countries. Praziquantel, the sole drug currently approved for schistosomiasis treatment, demonstrates effectiveness against patent infections. A recent study highlighted the antiparasitic properties of amiodarone, an anti-arrhythmic drug, exhibiting higher efficacy than praziquantel against prepatent infections. This study assessed the efficacy of amiodarone and praziquantel, both individually and in combination, against Schistosoma mansoni through comprehensive in vitro and in vivo experiments. In vitro experiments demonstrated synergistic activity (fractional inhibitory concentration index ≤0.5) for combinations of amiodarone with praziquantel. In a murine model of schistosomiasis featuring prepatent infections, treatments involving amiodarone (200 or 400 mg/kg) followed by praziquantel (200 or 400 mg/kg) yielded a substantial reduction in worm burden (60%-70%). Given the low efficacy of praziquantel in prepatent infections, combinations of amiodarone with praziquantel may offer clinical utility in the treatment of schistosomiasis., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
