The article examines the features of social security for military personnel in the State of Israel. In particular, it highlights the relevance of this issue for scientific research and practical application in the current historical realities of Ukraine. The aim of the article is to analyze the characteristics of social security for military personnel in the State of Israel. The subject of the study is the features of the social security system for Israeli military personnel, including its principles, structure, main benefits and services, as well as sources of funding. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the comprehensive analysis of the features of social security for Israeli military personnel, taking into account the latest changes in this field. Over the years of its development, the social security system for Israeli military personnel has become one of the most advanced in the world, making it a special object for scientific research, especially in the context of the full-scale war unfolding in Ukraine. The social security of Israeli military personnel is comprehensive and covers various areas. The article examines the principles of the social security system for Israeli military personnel, such as compulsory service, universality, targeted assistance, and funding. Significant attention is paid to analyzing the structure of this system, highlighting its main components and directions, which include state civil insurance, military social insurance, and social services. The article discusses the features of Israeli military personnel receiving benefits and free services related to medical care, housing, food, education, etc. It also outlines the directions and sources of funding for this budgetary sector in Israel. The key features of the Israeli social security system for military personnel are compared with the Ukrainian system. Special attention is given to the key features of veteran social protection, specifically for military personnel with the status of "discharged soldier," "active reservist," "discharged soldier with a disability," and "wounded soldier." The article also addresses the issue of providing appropriate social protection for the families of deceased military personnel. Introduction Tobacco use is prevalent and has traditionally been higher in the U.S. Military population than in the civilian population, but studies are limited. The goal of this study was to evaluate tobacco use and tobacco cessation counseling within the US Military health system (MHS). Materials and Methods This was a retrospective study assessing tobacco use and cessation counseling rates within the MHS from July 2016 to March 2022. Data for military tobacco use were obtained from the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Dashboard. US civilian tobacco rates were obtained from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Population Patients 18+ currently enrolled in direct care in military treatment facilities (MTFs) who had at least one direct primary care or well care gynecology encounter during the measurement years. Current tobacco use is defined as the presence of one coded indicator which included ICD 10CM codes, MEDCIN (a system of standardized medical terminology) Terms, and Vitals. Tobacco use is defined as the use of any form of tobacco (cigarette, cigar, vaping, or smokeless). The prevalence of tobacco use per month was analyzed from July 2016 through March 2022. After searching specifically for procedure codes for tobacco cessation counseling, a month-to- month trend of the rate of tobacco cessation counseling was also established. Results Data from 1.8 million patients were analyzed. Overall tobacco use within the MHS (including military dependents and retirees) decreased 1.68% (29.94 to 28.26%) from 2016 to 2022. Rates decreased by 3.24% (29.94 to 26.70%) from July 2016 to March 2021 before increasing by 1.56% (26.70 to 28.26%) from March 2021 to March 2022. Tobacco cessation counseling declined by 17.4% (28.4 to 11%) from July 2016 to March 2022. In comparison to the civilian population, tobacco use was 15.0% higher in the MHS. Conclusions Tobacco use remains common in the United States but is more prevalent in both active duty military and military retirees than civilians. Tobacco cessation counseling within the MHS steadily declined from 2016 to 2022. While there has been an overall reduction in rates of tobacco use in the military population over the last 5 years there was an increase over the last 2 years. Further research is needed to elucidate tobacco use, the effect of tobacco cessation counseling in the military, and the potential role of tobacco cessation medications in reducing tobacco use within the MHS. Introduction One in four U.S. service members endorses food insecurity. The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is an invaluable, underutilized resource that can increase access to nutritious food for families with children under 5 years of age. Our research sought to evaluate military family perceptions and engagement with the WIC program. Materials and Methods We conducted a mixed-method study, recruiting from a convenience sample of military families who applied for financial assistance for child care. An 18-question survey and follow-up focus groups assessed participant demographics and experiences with WIC. We utilized descriptive statistics ordinal logistic regression analyses for quantitative data analysis. For qualitative data, descriptive content analysis with constant comparison and inductive and deductive coding of interviews identified emerging themes. This study was approved by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Institutional Review Board. Results Among the 399 survey respondents, 25% were currently enrolled in WIC and 39% had been previously enrolled. Service members and their partners learned about WIC from a variety of sources, and there was no significant association between the branch of service or rank and WIC enrollment. There were 40 total participants in 10 completed focus groups. Six themes emerged: (1) Military-specific factors create unique circumstances related to WIC engagement; (2) the WIC program facilitates access to formula supplementation and nutritious foods for military families; (3) lack of program awareness and misinformation are top barriers to WIC engagement in military families; (4) stigma impacts WIC program enrollment and engagement; (5) logistics of enrollment can impact WIC engagement among military families; and (6) the military can support WIC enrollment and engagement through standardization, education, and leadership commitment. Conclusions Our findings suggest that unique circumstances related to military family life create a profound need for programs addressing food support, such as WIC. Interventions to improve WIC enrollment among military families need to be rooted in broad outreach efforts, not targeted at specific ranks, branches, or ages. Specific recommendations include increasing information dissemination, universally screening military families for WIC, decreasing logistical burdens, and involving military leadership. Deployment to active conflict zones significantly affects military families, with spouses often experiencing heightened stress and mental health challenges. However, research on non‐US military spouses, particularly those of reserve soldiers, who may face unique stressors compared to active‐duty personnel, remains scarce. This study examined perceived stress profiles among Israeli spouses of reserve soldiers during the ongoing Israel‐Hamas War, and their associations with deployment stressors, mental health outcomes, and psychological protective factors. A volunteer sample of Israeli spouses of reserve soldiers (n = 293) responded to self‐report questionnaires in a cross‐sectional study. Using latent profile analysis of the ratings of perceived stress, three distinct profiles were identified: low (35.1%), moderate (43.5%), and high (21.3%). Higher levels of deployment stressors (e.g., fear of spouse getting physically injured) predicted membership in the moderate and high‐stress profiles, while better household management was associated with lower stress profiles. The high‐stress profile reported significantly greater symptoms of depression and anxiety compared to the low and moderate stress profiles. In contrast, the low‐stress profile exhibited higher levels of resilience, self‐compassion, and perceived social support. These findings highlight the variability in spouses' stress responses during wartime deployment and identify key factors associated with psychological adjustment. Results suggest that deployment‐related fears, household management abilities, and psychological resources are crucial in shaping stress profiles and mental health outcomes among military spouses. In its early months, the Syrian uprising included a diverse array of participants, including many from communities that the regime had previously assumed to be loyal, whether because of their sectarian identity, where they lived, or family ties to the military. The experiences of women from these communities can shed light on important aspects of the Syrian uprising, and test some of our key assumptions about women's participation in contentious politics and the gendered aspects of political violence. Based on interviews, this article engages with the work on gender and conflict in examining family connections and political grievances that drew many women to the opposition, the specifically gendered risks that they faced, and the advantages that some women felt their gender and sectarian identities gave them as organizers and activists. Parenting programs aim to improve parenting quality, which may, in turn, support various aspects of child development, including behavior and mental health. However, parenting interventions show considerable heterogeneity in response patterns across different families, demonstrating that they are not one-size-fits-all programs. This variability points to a need for greater understanding of which families benefit most from these interventions and how to improve response among those who do not. Following this literature gap, this study employed a person-centered approach to identify different parenting profiles associated with heterogeneity in treatment responses to a family-based prevention interventions adapted for military families. This study used data from a randomized controlled trial of the ADAPT intervention for 336 US military families in which at least one parent had deployed to war. Latent profile analyses revealed three unobserved parenting profiles among mothers and fathers, reflecting High positive, Moderate positive, and Coercive parenting styles. Latent transition analysis (LTA) suggested that the ADAPT program led to improvements in parenting, particularly among mothers who began the program with moderate or typical levels of parenting skills, and that these positive changes in parenting may help to decrease child externalizing problems. For fathers, the ADAPT program was most effective in preventing declines in positive parenting among those with initially typical levels of positive parenting. Overall, study findings demonstrate considerable heterogeneity in parenting behavior among a sample of military families that is associated with variability in parent responses to the evidence-based parenting program. Issue Addressed: Australian veterans suffer higher rates of both mental and physical health conditions than civilians, yet many do not seek treatment. Computerised Interventions (CIs) may provide an alternative approach to management, which can overcome some barriers to treatment uptake. We aim to evaluate the scope and quality of CIs designed specifically for Australian veterans and their families. Methods: A manual search of the Department of Veterans' Affairs and other Ex‐service organisation websites was performed to map and describe CIs for Australian veterans and their families, followed by a scoping review of four databases to identify evaluations of relevant CIs. Results: Our search identified 10 CIs specific to Australian veterans and their families. The majority were structured, self‐guided CIs, designed to elicit cognitive/behavioural change that addressed mental health and psychosocial needs during transition. Three evaluations examined previously identified CIs. The results showed mixed reviews from participants and clinicians, in two separate evaluations, regarding user experience, quality and perceived benefit. In addition, positive psychological outcomes, including the reduction of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, were demonstrated for participants of the online intervention. Conclusion: While Australian veteran‐centric online interventions primarily focus on psychological conditions, the prevalent physical health concerns within the veteran population remain unaddressed. Additionally, despite the documented impact of military experience on family members, there is a lack of specific Australian interventions designed for families. Few tools have been formally evaluated, yet show promise as supportive self‐directed resources for veterans with PTSD, and for navigating transition challenges. So What?: Further development of online interventions addressing prevalent physical and family needs, and conduction of comprehensive evaluations are needed to enhance overall quality, accessibility and holistic effectiveness of interventions for the Australian veteran community. This article provides new perspectives on the transitions of children from military families. It examines the experiences and agency of a group of UK primary‐school Service children who were undergoing far‐reaching transitions while participating in an arts‐based research project. Transitions are conceived here not as events, such as school moves, but as processes of changing, the dialogical interplay between ever‐changing socio‐cultural and physical environments and the psychological work individuals undertake in response to change. This reconceptualisation of transitions shifts attention away from children's resilience, or lack thereof, and towards unique, nuanced understandings of their subjective experiences and priorities. Presenting multimodal pieces created by three children as they explored the question, ‘What's it like to be a Service child in this school?’, I describe their diverse and agentic responses to their changing circumstances, as they sought to mitigate anticipated and past losses and perceived disadvantage and to use their transitions as positive opportunities for self‐development. Although punctuated by observable moments of change, this transition work happened over an indefinite timescale, highlighting a need for long‐term support informed by understandings of children's agency and priorities. Adverse childhood experiences are traumatic early life experiences that can lead to poorer mental, physical, and social outcomes. Children in military and veteran families can face unique challenges compared with civilian families. This study utilizes data from 2017–2019 National Survey of Children's Health to examine 56,655 children living in military, veteran, and civilian families to predict the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences. Findings indicate that children living in veteran families (compared with civilian families) have higher odds of witnessing parents use violence and witnessing parents with alcohol or substance use problems. Children in military families had higher odds of divorce and lower odds of experiencing parental death. It is also noted that children living in military, veteran, and civilian families are similar across other ACEs including the incarceration of a parent, child as victim of violence, living with family with mental illness, unfair treatment because of race, and difficulty covering basics like food and housing. While service and operational records of the US armed forces have been previously investigated, personal communication records of military personnel have received less attention in archival scholarship. Specifically, we are concerned with the ways that changes in technology challenge the preservation of personal communications records. This issue is important because personal communication records of service members, both active and retired, can support military personnel and their families in managing the stress of deployment. Moreover, such records can help military families cope with grief when a service member dies. In this study, we address this gap by exploring the communication practices of US military personnel who served between 2005 and 2020. We focus on how military personnel communicated with their friends and family, the records that resulted from such communications, and the impacts of information technologies and institutional policies of the armed forces in said recordkeeping practices. We found that these practices evolved in tandem with the information and communication technologies available to them, that military personnel employed a relational approach to records and recordkeeping, and that recordkeeping practices of personal communications were directly connected to factors such as the information policies of the armed forces and the blurred lines between the on and off duty lives of active service members. Based on our findings, we suggest that future work should develop guidelines that help service members and their families prioritize which personal communications to record and keep. Introduction: Mental health conditions (i.e. depression or anxiety) are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth in the United States (U.S.) and are associated with increased maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Research has demonstrated a relationship between stress and mental health diagnoses in pregnancy; therefore, it is concerning that military families face unique challenges which contribute to additional stressors among spouses of active-duty (AD) military personnel during the perinatal period. The objective of this scoping review was to understand the current state of research on perinatal stress or perinatal mental health among American spouses of AD military personnel. Methods: The Boolean phrase was created in consultation with 2 health science librarians and the following databases searched in October 2023: PubMed, Embase, Military and Government Collection, CINAHL, and PsychINFO. 2 reviewers identified 481 studies for screening once duplicates were removed. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 studies remained for data extraction and analysis. Results: Most of the studies were quantitative, took place in the southern U.S., and the most represented military branch was Air Force. Most of the studies included both AD military members and AD spouses; 28% focused solely on AD spouses. Samples were not racially diverse, and findings identified racial disparities in perinatal mental health conditions. There was a wide variety in outcome measures, including the following general categories: (1) stress, anxiety, and/or depression, (2) maternal-infant attachment, (3) group prenatal care, and (4) deployment focus. Our review identified the following concepts: spouses most at risk for perinatal mental health conditions, the need for perinatal mental health screening, and the need for social support. Conclusions: Findings from the identified studies indicate a need for additional research in this area. Additionally, findings highlight circumstances unique to this population that result in an increased risk of stress and/or mental health conditions during the perinatal period. Such challenges demand improved mental health screening and additional resources for this population. Meeting the needs of this unique population also requires significant funding and policy change to allow for increased access to mental health resources and to ensure the health of the birthing person and infant. Purpose: To examine [a] the association of caregiver health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and service member/veteran (SMV) neurobehavioral outcomes with caregiver resilience; [b] longitudinal change in resilience at the group and individual level; and [c] the magnitude of change at the individual level. Methods: Caregivers (N = 232) of SMVs with traumatic brain injury completed a resilience measure, and 18 caregiver HRQOL and SMV neurobehavioral outcome measures at a baseline evaluation and follow-up evaluation three years later. Caregivers were divided into two resilience groups at baseline and follow-up: [1] Low Resilience (≤ 45 T, baseline n = 99, follow-up n = 93) and [2] High Resilience (> 45 T, baseline n = 133, follow-up n = 139). Results: At baseline and follow-up, significant effects were found between Low and High Resilience groups for the majority of outcome measures. There were no significant differences in resilience from baseline to follow-up at the group-mean level. At the individual level, caregivers were classified into four longitudinal resilience groups: [1] Persistently Low Resilience (Baseline + Follow-up = Low Resilience, n = 60), [2] Reduced Resilience (Baseline = High Resilience + Follow-up = Low Resilience, n = 33), [3] Improved Resilience (Baseline = Low Resilience + Follow-up = High Resilience, n = 39), and [4] Persistently High Resilience (Baseline + Follow-up = High Resilience, n = 100). From baseline to follow-up, approximately a third of the Reduced and Improved Resilience groups reported a meaningful change in resilience (≥ 10 T). Nearly all of the Persistently High and Persistently Low Resilience groups did not report meaningful change in resilience (< 10 T). Conclusion: Resilience was not a fixed state for all caregivers. Early intervention may stall the negative caregiving stress-health trajectory and improve caregiver resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The influence of deployments on family relationships has hardly been investigated. Following a recently proposed new research strategy, military personnel with and without deployment-related life-threatening military incidents during deployment were compared. The hypothesis was that partner and family relationships of military personnel who experienced such an event would deteriorate more. Methods: This study included N = 255 military personnel who had a romantic partner (n = 78 of them had children) when deployed to Afghanistan. Of these, n = 68 military personnel experienced a deployment-related critical event during the deployment, n = 187 did not. Partnership quality was assessed using a semi-structured pre- and post-deployment interview. Results: The partner relationships of military personnel who experienced a deployment-related life-threatening military incident during deployment broke up significantly more often. The partner relationships of all military personnel deteriorated significantly, with greater deterioration after deployment in the group who faced such incidents. These results were independent of age, rank or number of previous deployments. In addition, there was a significant deterioration in the relationships between all military personnel and their children with greater deterioration after deployment in the group who faced such incidents. Conclusion: Life-threatening military incidents during a deployment abroad appear to have a considerable influence on the quality and stability of the partner and family relationships of military personnel. Objective This study examined whether service members and their families engage in communication with their primary care managers (PCMs) regarding their losses and to what extent PCMs provide counseling or referrals for grief-related concerns. Additionally, the study explored the potential associations between ethnicity, age, military status (dependent, service member, or veteran), gender, patients' disclosure of loss to their PCM, receipt of referrals for grief-related services, and treatment seeking. Methods A survey was administered to 161 patients enrolled in primary care at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, with 138 reporting a significant loss. Bereaved respondents completed the Inventory of Complicated Grief and the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13 Revised scale (PG-13). Respondents were also asked questions related to their loss and their interactions with their PCM related to the loss. Results One hundred twenty-five bereaved respondents completed the measures, 13 had missing information related to PCM interactions. Twenty-nine percent (n  = 36) of the 112 respondents reported a significant loss to their PCM. These respondents exhibited significantly higher symptom severity, as indicated by their total mean scores on the Inventory of Complicated Grief and the PG13. Seventeen percent (n  = 6) of these respondents reported receiving counseling on topics related to grief or a referral for grief care from their PCM. A moderate relationship was identified between military status and communication with PCM, such that current service members were least likely to report, followed by veterans, then dependents. A moderate relationship was also found between ethnicity and treatment seeking. Conclusion The study's findings have implications for primary care and highlight opportunities for improved outcomes, including the development of appropriate assessment protocols, interventions, and educational initiatives to address grief-related concerns within the military healthcare system. Future research should further investigate the specific needs and preferences of military personnel and their families to enhance the delivery of targeted and effective healthcare services. Objective: Adolescent children of US service members (i.e., military‐dependent youth) face unique stressors that increase risk for various forms of disinhibited eating, including emotional eating. Difficulties with adaptively responding to stress and aversive emotions may play an important role in emotional eating. This study examined emotion dysregulation as a potential moderator of the association between perceived stress and emotional eating in adolescent military dependents. Method: Participants were military‐dependent youth (N = 163, 57.7% female, Mage = 14.5 ± 1.6, MBMI‐z = 1.9 ± 0.4) at risk for adult binge‐eating disorder and high weight enrolled in a randomized controlled prevention trial. Prior to intervention, participants completed questionnaires assessing perceived stress and emotional eating. Parents completed a questionnaire assessing their adolescent's emotion dysregulation. Moderation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS macro in SPSS and adjusted for theoretically relevant sociodemographic covariates. Results: The interaction between adolescent perceived stress and emotion dysregulation (parent‐reported about the adolescent) in relation to adolescent emotional eating was found to be significant, such that higher emotion dysregulation magnified the association between perceived stress and emotional eating (p =.010). Examination of simple slopes indicated that associations between perceived stress and emotional eating were strongest for youth with above‐average emotion dysregulation, and non‐significant for youth with average or below‐average emotion dysregulation. Discussion: Findings suggest that greater emotion dysregulation may increase risk for emotional eating in response to stress among military‐dependent youth at risk for binge‐eating disorder or high weight. Improving emotion regulation skills may be a useful target for eating disorder prevention among youth who are at risk for emotional eating. Public Significance: Prior research has shown that adolescent military dependents are at increased risk for eating disorders and high weight. The current study found that emotion dysregulation moderated the relationship between perceived stress and emotional eating among military‐dependent youth. There may be clinical utility in intervening on emotion regulation for adolescent dependents at particular risk for emotional eating and subsequent eating disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accelerating renewable energy deployment is imperative to address the climate crisis, yet projects commonly face community resistance and local cancellation. Accordingly, interest has risen in social impact assessments (SIAs) to evaluate social viability and strengthen management. However, mainstream approaches overlook upstream political economy dynamics that shape projects and drive opposition. Analyzing renewable developments in Mexico reveals how international negotiations and national policies produce rushed, large-scale projects in marginalized territories, igniting rural social struggles. While SIA practices can be enhanced, upstream policies constrain their scope to reshape misaligned projects and performance to address complex sociocultural contexts. This prompts questioning why vulnerable regions bear concentrated impacts and the need to explore alternative development pathways, despite SIAs implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a world where asylum and migration have become major concerns for countries of transit and destination, political neutrality seems to be demanded from humanitarian workers. But under the pressures of workload, limited funds, and complex settings, these actors deviate from expectations and practice extra‐legal authority of a unique political nature. When handling asylum cases, these agents take crucial decisions that decisively impact the lives of asylum seekers. In legally fragile transit points where the rule of law faces challenges and where asylum seekers come seeking further resettlement in European countries, rejected applicants face risky fates of deportation, jail, violence, or death. In turn, humanitarian caseworkers pushed by workloads, purse strings, emotional burnout, and compassion fatigue, flatten the sufferings of their applicants, balance, and rank them. Caseworkers have to rank sufferings and decide who may eventually survive and who may simply be left to a risky unknown. In Agambian terms, this extralegal authority draws the lines, creates a zone of exception and throws rejected applicants into the realm of "Bare Life" where they become "Homo Sacer," whose life is worthless. Using Lipsky's theorization of street‐level bureaucrats and in‐depth interviews, the paper tackles these crucial issues by interviewing caseworkers from a variety of international organizations operating in the transit point of Egypt. This article explores the complicated process of post-deployment homecoming in military families in Denmark. Based on qualitative interviews with spouses and children of formerly deployed soldiers, the article analyses some of the main challenges related to homecoming and military-to-family transitions in military families. It illuminates how deployment affects family practices and social relations by especially focusing on gender equality, fatherhood, and masculinity. Based on interviews with spouses and children, the article outlines three masculinity positions available to Danish homecoming veterans: gender equality masculinities, militarized masculinities, and troubled masculinities. AbstractMilitary families raising children with disabilities face many challenges locating and accessing support and services from a local school district following a redeployment. Proper and adequate support from education agencies can help facilitate smooth school transitions for military children and their families. Therefore, it is critical to explore various supports and services offered by school systems and learn about military families’ experiences when attempting to access those resources. The purpose of this scoping review was to examine the extant research related to supports and services offered to military families, explore parental experiences with accessibility, and guide future research on the topic. This scoping review was conducted using Arksey & O’Malley five-step structured process. The identified studies described a range of public school-based services and supports provided to military families and their experiences with accessing needed services and supports. This study investigated how relocation patterns affect disaster survivors' psychological stress on the diverse durations and spaces of relocation. It analyzed a 10-year data set of 1,236 families affected by 2009's Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan, identifying six relocation patterns through dynamic time warping (DTW). A hierarchical linear model was utilized, revealing the discernible impacts of environmental factors, sociocultural factors, and family-level socioeconomic factors on psychological stress. The study revealed that survivors who quickly found stable residences after the disaster initially experienced lower stress levels, but in the long term, their stress increased. Conversely, those with unstable residences experienced higher initial stress but lower long-term stress. Comparing similar patterns, we found that survivors who had more time for preparation and who sought opportunities, coped, or adapted to secondary stressors before long-distance relocation faced lower stress levels. Objective: The present study, conducted with a population of military families, examined the comparative effectiveness of three program formats of Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT), a parenting program for families of school-aged children in which a National Guard or Reserve (NG/R) parent had returned from deployment to the post-9/11 conflicts. Despite well-documented need, parenting programs for NG/R families are scarce and often inaccessible. We predicted that both facilitator-delivered conditions (i.e., in-person group; individual telehealth) would result in stronger improvements in observed parenting than assignment to the online self-directed condition. We further proposed a noninferiority hypothesis wherein no significant difference would be detected between telehealth and group conditions. Method: Families (N = 244; 87% Caucasian) were recruited from NG/R units in two midwestern states. Families (with a 5–12-year-old child) were randomized to one of three conditions: in-person multifamily group, individual telehealth, or an online, self-directed condition. The intervention was delivered using the same content across conditions, over 14 weeks (group, telehealth conditions) or 12 modules (online condition); either or both parents could participate. Results: Intent-to-treat analyses supported both hypotheses: families in both in-person group and telehealth conditions showed significant improvements to observed parenting at 1-year postbaseline compared with those assigned to the self-directed online condition. Conclusions: This is the first study to demonstrate that in-person group and telehealth parenting programs are equally effective and that both are superior to a self-directed online program. Limitations include differences between the session lengths in each format, as well as greater attrition in the in-person format. Introduction Nearly a quarter of active duty service members identified as food insecure in a 2022 Department of Defense report. Food insecurity impacts military readiness, retention, and recruitment. The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federal food supplementation program that can mitigate food insecurity for service members with children less than 5 years of age. To date, there is a lack of standardized screening for WIC eligibility or enrollment for service members and their families. This project sought to evaluate WIC awareness and enrollment as well as the prevalence of food insecurity at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Materials and Methods A 26-question survey was developed to assess WIC awareness, source of WIC information, food insecurity, and nutritional insecurity. Our team developed and utilized a novel WIC screening algorithm to rapidly screen families for WIC eligibility. These tools were administered to families presenting for care at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center pediatrics and obstetric outpatient clinics during the month of July 2022. This study was approved by the institutional review board at Walter Reed. Results A total of 108 (25%) of the 432 surveyed participants were eligible for WIC, with odds of WIC eligibility increasing for lower-ranking and younger service members. Of the 432 participants, 354 (81.9%) were aware of WIC. Enlisted service members were more likely than officers to know about WIC (P  = 0.03), and of the 354 participants aware of WIC, a higher proportion of enlisted rank respondents learned about WIC from a military source (P  = 0.01). Among the 108 participants eligible for WIC, only 38 (35.2%) reported being enrolled in WIC. Among WIC-eligible respondents who knew about WIC, being enrolled in the WIC program was not associated with rank, branch of service, sponsor gender, or sponsor age. Conclusions Despite proven efficacy, WIC remains an underutilized resource for eligible military families. Our results show that a standardized screening approach at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center increased identification of WIC-eligible active duty service members by 180%, with approximately $150,000 a year in increased food supplementation benefits. Military healthcare and readiness leaders should embrace efforts to increase knowledge of, referral to, and enrollment in WIC to increase family health, well-being, and military family readiness. Introduction Many facets of military life are contributors to child health including frequent mobility, family separation, and increased risk to parental physical and mental health, as well as strong social networks and military support systems; yet, there has not been an examination of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and positive childhood experiences (PCEs) among military children. Materials and methods This study used the 2020–2021 National Survey of Children's Health, limited to children aged 6 to 17 years of age, to examine the association between a child who has ever had a caregiver on active duty and their exposure to ACEs and PCEs (n  = 54,256 children). Bivariate analyses used Pearson's chi-squared tests and were weighted to be nationally representative. Multivariable regression models were used to examine the association between military status and selected ACEs. Results There were no statistically significant differences in PCEs between military and civilian children. Compared to children with a civilian caregiver, children who had a caregiver who had ever served on active duty had a higher odds of experiencing domestic violence (adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR), 1.61; 95% CI 1.23–2.11), mental health issues or depression in the household (aOR 1.28; 95% CI 1.07–1.52), and substance use (aOR 1.28; 95% CI 1.06–1.55). Conclusions This study complements and extends previous research that has taken a deficit approach and focused exclusively on the hardships faced by children in military families. The findings from this study may be instructive for child welfare advocates and policymakers as they intervene in communities with programming that promotes PCEs among children and adolescents. The challenges that military adolescents face, including frequent relocations, pose potential risks to their identity development. The central aim of this study is to understand the impact that frequent relocations have on the identity development of highly mobile military adolescents. Military adolescents between the ages of 16 and 18 years were interviewed. An interpretive phenomenological design was employed to inform the interview and analytic approach. An inductive approach using humanistic interpretation through Hermeneutic circles was conducted. Four overarching themes were identified, including self-perception in the world, building relationships, overwhelming emotions, and fostering healthy transitions. Several subthemes developed and gave rise to common adolescent experiences. Military adolescents facing frequent relocations experience a series of identity crises that are often masked in daily life and kept secret from peers and family. Healthy transitions require the adolescent and family to openly and repeatedly explore the impact of relocations on the inner and social life of adolescents. This study calls for future research on the military adolescent-provider relationship to explore how to better help meet the needs of this population from a health care standpoint. "Jungle Heart of the Khmer Rouge: The Memoirs of Phi Phuon, Pol Pot's Aide-de-Camp, and the Role of Ratanakiri and Its Tribal Minorities on the Cambodian Revolution" is a book that tells the story of Phi Phuon, a member of the Jarai upland ethnic minority who joined Cambodia's communist revolution in the 1960s and served as a bodyguard and aide to the Khmer Rouge leaders. A recent scoping review indicated military-connected children face stressors that may increase mental health issues. However, the majority of the included literature was American. To examine the experiences of Canadian military-connected children, we conducted in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of Canadian military-connected youth using a qualitative description approach. We conducted a content analysis on interview data, supported by qualitative data analysis software (MAXQDA), with coding done by two researchers who met regularly to discuss coding agreement. Thirteen children in military families participated and described the mental health impact of frequent mobility, parental absence, and risk of parental injury. The experiences of our participants were consistent with the results of an earlier scoping review on this topic. Our results suggest improving military cultural competence among health care providers and enhancing parental support may positively impact child well-being. Scholars have described a divide between military and civilian culture, often focusing on the relationship between civilian communities and the Armed Forces and its veterans. Equally important are the families of military personnel. News media are an important source of information about military society for many U.S. civilians. This study examined how three types of news publications portrayed military families on Twitter between 2010 and 2020. News content was drawn from 21 outlets that cater to (1) general audiences, (2) military communities, and (3) military personnel. News outlets often associated military families with terms related to hardship, including substandard housing, financial problems, and other issues. In 1,052 posts, news outlets used five frames to describe military families: hardship, support, education, honor, and politics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the group guidance program on family stress and burnout scores of parents who have children with special needs. Pre-test, post-test quasi-experimental control grouped design was used in the study. There were four parents (mother) in the experimental group and four parents (mother) in the control group. The Questionnaire on Resource and Stress-F and the Maslach Burnout Inventory were used as data collection tools. The group guidance program, which was developed by Ayşe Çin in 2001 and consists of eight sessions was applied to the experiment group. Group guidance was conducted online through the Zoom Meetings program, considering the ethical principles of online counseling due to the COVID-19 process. Group guidance was applied to the experimental group between 31.05.2021 and 25.07.2021. Control group has not been subjected to any application. Significance of differences in pre-test post-test scores of subjects were analyzed with Mann Whitney U test. The research findings showed that the group guidance program had a significant effect on the family stress levels and burnout levels of the parents in the experimental group. This study explores the education of young Polish female refugees in postwar Britain, and the implications of the establishment of the Committee for the Education of Poles, a body brought into being on April 1, 1947, as a consequence of the passage of the Polish Resettlement Bill in March 1947 (the first ever British legislation dealing with mass immigration). It examines the newly introduced grammar schools for girls, the challenges raised for these new educational establishments, and the strategies introduced by the British authorities in order to cope with the growing numbers of Polish adolescents entering the country after World War II. Based on archival records and supported by oral interviews, the sample case studies presented herein highlight one way in which the young Polish community was rehabilitated in exile at the start of their path towards civic integration. They highlight the key importance of education to that pathway. The studies presented here provide an insight into the experiences of, and challenges faced by, young Polish women during the Process of their education and resettlement. Thanks to extant school reports, it has been possible to ascertain not only the practical and financial problems that impacted the schools presented in the paper, which operated under the auspices of the Committee for the Education of Poles, but also their slow, but steady improvement over time. The paper provides clear evidence that it was thanks to the Committee that a significant proportion of the younger generation of Poles managed to acquire the qualifications needed to secure their first jobs and ultimately a career in industry or business and so play a useful part in the economic life of Great Britain and her overseas territories. To better understand the availability and quality of current Extension programming for Veterans and their families, the researchers reviewed the academic literature (yielding 12 publications) and conducted an online scan of Extension programs (yielding 112 resources). Programs discovered fell across nine areas: occupational training/support, mental health support, service to Veterans, family support, livelihood support, holistic support, life quality, healthcare access/quality, and community development. This study revealed that, while Extension programs exist for Veterans and their families, program coordination, needs assessments from Veteran populations, and better program evaluations are needed to maximize efficacy of Extension programs serving Veteran populations. Introduction In the Medscape 2020 Compensation Report, family physicians ranked low for feeling fairly compensated, choosing their specialty again and choosing medicine again. However, the Medscape data may not represent military family physicians. Methods A large survey was emailed to 2,562 military family physicians via a military professional organization list-serve from February to April 2021. The inquiry included 6 statements pertaining to professional satisfaction. The main outcome measures were proportions of "agree" and "strongly agree." The proportions were compared to the Medscape Compensation Report 2020 and 2022. Statistical analysis was completed with a two-tailed Z -score for 2 populations. Results Sixty-one percent of military family physicians feel fairly compensated compared to 54% of civilian family physicians in 2020 and 55% in 2022 (P  = .065,.119). Eighty-six percent of military family physicians would reselect medicine compared to 74% of civilian family physicians in 2020 and 73% in 2022 (P < .001 for both). Eighty percent of military family physicians would reselect their specialty again compared to 70% of civilians in 2020 and 68% in 2022 (P  = .004, P  = .001, respectively). Conclusions Military family physicians were more likely to choose medicine generally and family medicine specifically again. Military family physicians and civilian family physicians do not statistically differ in feeling fairly compensated. War photography scholarship tends to focus attention on photographers' lives and the thematic content of images. This study shifts the spotlight onto how varied members of the public respond to a body of work, in this case the photography and filmmaking of Tim Hetherington (1970-2011), whose archive the Imperial War Museum (IWM) obtained in 2017. We discuss findings from a number of visually-led focus groups with refugees, veterans, military family members, photography students and museum volunteers. Together we examined his image-making process with the groups to discover how they discussed notions such as intimacy, masculinity, the 'good' conflict photograph, and ethical dilemmas. We argue that engaging with multiple public perspectives through visual elicitation methods enhances curatorial knowledge and understanding of image-making practices in this specific context, whilst also offering insights for national museums more broadly on how dialogue with diverse communities can enrich the handling and display of new collections. The article "The Ukraine War and its Consequences for Russia" deals with the impact of the war in Ukraine on Russia. Russia was unable to achieve its war goals and is now confronted with the consequences of the war. This has led to political instability, social and regional division, as well as a loss of international influence. The population of Russia is affected to varying degrees by the consequences of the war, especially families of military personnel, soldiers, and war refugees. Nevertheless, the state of the country during the war seems to have established itself as the norm. There are different opinions on the war and the general development, with support for the army being high, but at the same time, there is a need for peace negotiations. In Russia, no official state of war or state of emergency has been declared, but laws have been enacted that restrict political basic rights and freedoms. The article describes the restriction of political, democratic, and fundamental spaces in Russia, as well as the persecution of oppositional opinions. Nevertheless, President Putin's popularity remains high as he is perceived as a guarantor of stability and security. Russia's foreign policy has turned away from a partnership with the West and is now oriented towards China, India, and Latin America. The vision of a common economic area from Lisbon to Vladivostok has failed, and Russia is economically dependent on China. To disentangle the effects of key dimensions of dispositional mindfulness on parenting, the present study tests the hypotheses that parental Nonreactivity moderates the association between Observing and effective parenting behaviors, and that parental inhibitory control mediates the relationship between Observing and parenting depending on levels of Nonreactivity. The sample consists of 294 fathers (95.9% deployed) and 313 mothers (81.5% nondeployed) from 336 military families with a child aged between 4 and 13 years at baseline. Parents reported Observing and Nonreactivity at baseline using the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire and completed a computerized Go/No-Go task for assessing inhibitory control at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Families completed a series of in-home interaction tasks at baseline and 2-year follow-up, and effective parenting behaviors were observed and coded using a theory-driven, empirically validated coding system. Results showed that when fathers reported low Nonreactivity, the association between Observing and effective parenting behaviors 2 years later was negative, but this association became positive when fathers reported high Nonreactivity. Fathers' Observing was associated with decreased inhibitory control 1 year later when they reported low (vs. high) Nonreactivity, whereas mothers' Observing was associated with increased inhibitory control 1 year later when they reported high (vs. low) Nonreactivity. The hypothesized effect of inhibitory control as a mediator was not found. Understanding specificity in the effects of dispositional mindfulness dimensions on parenting behaviors will drive effective and efficient designs of mindful parenting interventions.
