Subcommittee on Survey of Nuclear Medicine Practice in Japan has performed a nationwide survey of nuclear medicine practice every 5 years since 1982 to survey contemporary nuclear medicine practice and its changes over the years. The subcommittee sent questionnaires, including the number and category of examinations as well as the kind of the radiopharmaceuticals during the 30 days of June 2022 to all nuclear medicine institutes in Japan. The total numbers of them for the year 2022 were estimated depends on the 1-month data. A total of 1095 institutes responded to the survey, including 364 positron emission tomography (PET) centers. The recovery rate was 90.6%. The number of gamma cameras installed was 1299 in total, with 2.5% decrease in 5 years. Dual-head cameras and hybrid SPECT/CT scanners accounted for 83.8% and 35.5%, respectively. The number of single-photon tracer studies in 2022 was 1.11 million which means increase in 2.7% in 5 years. Bone scintigraphy was a leading examination (31.0%), followed by myocardial scintigraphy (27.1%) and cerebral perfusion study (23.8%) in order. The percentage of SPECT studies showed an increase from 63.5% in previous survey to 66.8% in this survey. PET centers have also increased from 389 to 412, as compared with the previous one. One hundred and twenty-two PET centers have installed one or two in-house cyclotrons. Increasing trends of the PET studies were observed from 1992 to 2017, the trend changed and PET studies showed 1.5% decrease in 5 years. 18 F-FDG accounted for 98.6% (610,497 examinations). PET examinations using 11 C-methionine, 13 N-NH 3 and 11 C-PIB have decreased, with 1624, 2146 and 525 examinations, respectively in 2022. The total number of nuclear medicine examination was eventually increased by 1.0%. Therapies for pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma (PPGL) with 131 I-MIBG and for neuroendocrine tumor with 177 Lu-DOTA-TATE were newly started, however, a total number of targeted radionuclide therapy was decreased by 17.7% because 131 I-radioiodine and 223 Ra targeted therapies were decreased and supply of some radioisotopes was discontinued. 131 I-radioiodine targeted therapy showed a decrease in 5 years (- 15.9%), including 4099 patients for thyroid cancer. The number of out-patient thyroid bed ablation therapy with 1110 MBq of 131 I was also decreased to 1015 per year. The number of admission rooms specialized for radionuclide targeted therapy increased from 157 to 160. The number of 223 Ra targeted therapies for castration-resistant metastatic prostate cancer (mCRPC) was 1041 patients. This survey was performed during COVID-19 pandemic, however, total number of nuclear medicine examinations was almost same as previous survey (+ 1.0%). Radionuclide therapies with 131 I-MIBG and 177 Lu-DOTA-TATE were newly started, and new radionuclide therapy will be available in future, therefore, the development of radionuclide therapy will be continued. We are convinced that this survey report is useful in understanding the current status of the nuclear medicine practice in Japan, and in devising the new strategy to strengthen a role of nuclear medicine., (© 2024. Background: Bone marrow metastasis (BMM) of gastric cancer (GC), which is the most common cause of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) among solid tumors, has a poor prognosis. Studies on prognostic improvement beyond one year in patients with GC with BMM are limited. This is the first report of a patient who survived over three years after 30 months of S-1 plus oxaliplatin (SOX) therapy for GC with BMM., Case Report: The patient was a 72-year-old woman who presented with anemia and high levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9). Detailed examination led to the diagnosis with BMM of GC uncomplicated by DIC and the SOX regimen was initiated in November 2018. After six cycles, she was switched to S-1 monotherapy, and both ALP and CA19-9 levels reached normal by November 2019. However, computed tomography in April 2021 showed multiple bone metastases. Therefore, she was switched to paclitaxel-based therapy. The imbalance in the phosphorylation and the dephosphorylation of proteins leads to various diseases. Therefore, in vivo, the functions of protein kinases and protein phosphatases are strictly regulated. Mg 2+ /Mn 2+ -dependent protein phosphatase PPM1M has been implicated in immunity and cancer; however, the regulation mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we show that PPM1M is regulated in different ways by multiple phosphorylation. PPM1M has four Ser/Thr-Pro motifs (Ser27, Ser43, Ser60, and Thr254) that are recognized by proline-directed kinases, and Ser60 was found to be phosphorylated by cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) in the cell. The phospho-mimetic mutation of Ser27 and Ser43 in the N-terminal domain suppresses the nuclear localization of PPM1M and promotes its accumulation in the cytoplasm. The phospho-mimetic mutation of Ser60 decreases PPM1M activity; conversely, the phospho-mimetic mutation of Thr254 increases PPM1M activity. These results suggest that the subcellular localization and phosphatase activity of PPM1M are regulated by protein kinases, including CDK5, via phosphorylation at multiple sites. We report the complete organellar genome sequences of an ultrasmall green alga, Medakamo hakoo strain M-hakoo 311, which has the smallest known nuclear genome in freshwater green algae. Medakamo hakoo has 90.8-kb chloroplast and 36.5-kb mitochondrial genomes containing 80 and 33 putative protein-coding genes, respectively. The mitochondrial genome is the smallest in the Trebouxiophyceae algae studied so far. The GC content of the nuclear genome is 73%, but those of chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes are 41% and 35%, respectively. Codon usages in the organellar genomes have a different tendency from that in the nuclear genome. The organellar genomes have unique characteristics, such as the biased encoding of mitochondrial genes on a single strand and the absence of operon structures in chloroplast ribosomal genes. Medakamo hakoo will be helpful for understanding the evolution of the organellar genome and the regulation of gene expression in chloroplasts and mitochondria.

Post-stroke gait disorders involve altered lower limb kinematics. Recently, the endpoint of the lower limb has been used as a control variable to understand gait kinematics better. In a cross-sectional study of sixty-seven post-stroke patients, the limb extension angle and effective limb length during gait were used as input variables with a mixed Gaussian model-based probabilistic clustering approach to identify five distinct clusters. Each cluster had unique characteristics related to motor paralysis, spasticity, balance ability, and gait strategy. Cluster 1 exhibited high limb extension angle and length values, indicating increased spasticity. Cluster 2 had moderate extension angles and high limb lengths, indicating increased spasticity and reduced balance ability. Cluster 3 had low limb extension angles and high limb length, indicating reduced balance ability, more severe motor paralysis, and increased spasticity. Cluster 4 demonstrated high extension angles and short limb lengths, with a gait strategy that prioritized stride length in the component of gait speed. Cluster 5 had moderate extension angles and short limb lengths, with a gait strategy that prioritized cadence in the component of gait speed. Although detailed diagnostic guidelines are available, differentiating dementia with Lewy bodies from Alzheimer's disease is often difficult. 123-I-MIBG cardiac scintigraphy is one of the tools which have been proposed for the diagnostic procedure. The present review is aimed at evaluating the available literature about this topic. Studies assessing the use of this technique to differentiate between the two diseases have been examined and reported. Overall, despite a certain study-to-study variability, the available literature suggests that 123-I-MIBG cardiac scintigraphy is an effective tool in differentiating between the two diseases, with high sensitivity and specificity values. Although the large-scale application of this technique is limited by possible interactions with specific medications and comorbidities, the reported studies are supportive for the usefulness of this technique in clinical practice., (© 2024. Purpose: Epidemiological and logistical reasons are slowing the clinical validation of the molecular imaging biomarkers in the initial stages of neurocognitive disorders. We provide an updated systematic review of the recent advances (2017-2022), highlighting methodological shortcomings., Methods: Studies reporting the diagnostic accuracy values of the molecular imaging techniques (i.e., amyloid-, tau-, [18F]FDG-PETs, DaT-SPECT, and cardiac [123I]-MIBG scintigraphy) in predicting progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia were selected according to the Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) method and evaluated with the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) tool. Main eligibility criteria were as follows: (1) ≥ 50 subjects with MCI, (2) follow-up ≥ 3 years, (3) gold standard: progression to dementia or diagnosis on pathology, and (4) measures of prospective accuracy., Results: Sensitivity (SE) and specificity (SP) in predicting progression to dementia, mainly to Alzheimer's dementia were 43-100% and 63-94% for [ 18 F]FDG-PET and 64-94% and 48-93% for amyloid-PET. Longitudinal studies were lacking for less common disorders (Dementia with Lewy bodies-DLB and Frontotemporal lobe degeneration-FTLD) and for tau-PET, DaT-SPECT, and [123I]-MIBG scintigraphy. Therefore, the accuracy values from cross-sectional studies in a smaller sample of subjects (n > 20, also including mild dementia stage) were chosen as surrogate outcomes. DaT-SPECT showed 47-100% SE and 71-100% SP in differentiating Lewy body disease (LBD) from non-LBD conditions; tau-PET: 88% SE and 100% SP in differentiating DLB from Posterior Cortical Atrophy. [ 123 I]-MIBG scintigraphy differentiated LBD from non-LBD conditions with 47-100% SE and 71-100% SP., Conclusion: Molecular imaging has a moderate-to-good accuracy in predicting the progression of MCI to Alzheimer's dementia. Chirality is a fundamental property of nature with relevance in biochemistry and physics, particularly in the field of catalysis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying chirality transfer is crucial for advancing the knowledge of chiral-related catalysis. Chiral quantum materials with intriguing chirality-dependent electronic properties, such as spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and exotic spin/orbital angular momentum (SAM/OAM), open novel avenues for linking solid-state topologies with chiral catalysis. In this review, the growth of topological homochiral crystals (THCs) is described, and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen electrocatalysis, and asymmetric catalysis are summarized. A possible link between chirality-dependent electronic properties and heterogeneous catalysis is discussed. Finally, existing challenges in this field are highlighted, and a brief outlook on the impact of THCs on the overarching chemical-physical research is presented., (© 2023 The Authors. Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are a class of oral targeted anticancer drugs that have been demonstrated to significantly inhibit tumor progression and improve clinical prognosis in patients diagnosed with EGFR-mutated tumors, particularly in those with non- small cell lung cancer. However, the sustained usage of EGFR-TKIs may cause potential cardiotoxicity, thus limiting their applicability. The primary objective of this review is to systematically analyze the evolving landscape of research pertaining to EGFR-TKI-induced cardiotoxicity and elucidate its underlying mechanisms, such as PI3K signaling pathway inhibition, ion channel blockade, oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and apoptosis. Additionally, the review includes an exploration of risk assessment for cardiotoxicity induced by EGFR- TKIs, along with management and response strategies. Prospective research directions are outlined, emphasizing the need for more accurate predictors of cardiotoxicity and the development of innovative intervention strategies. In summation, this review consolidates recent research advances, illuminates the risks associated with EGFR-TKI-induced cardiac toxicity and presents crucial insights for refining clinical dosage protocols, optimizing patient management strategies, and unraveling the intricate mechanisms governing EGFR-TKI- induced cardiotoxicity. T cells express an enormous repertoire of T cell receptors, enabling them to recognize any potential antigen. This large repertoire undergoes stringent selections in the thymus, where receptors that react to self- or non-danger-associated-antigens are purged. We know that thymic tolerance depends on signals and antigens presented by the thymic antigen presenting cells, but we still do not understand precisely how many of these cells actually contribute to tolerance. This is especially true for thymic dendritic cells (DC), which are composed of diverse subpopulations that are derived from different progenitors. Although the importance of thymic DCs has long been known, the functions of specific DC subsets have been difficult to untangle. There remains insufficient systematic characterization of the ontogeny and phenotype of thymic APCs in general. As a result, validated experimental models for studying thymic DCs are limited. Recent technological advancement, such as multi-omics analyses, has enabled new insights into thymic DC biology. These recent findings indicate a need to re-evaluate the current tools used to study the function of these cells within the thymus. This review will discuss how thymic DC subpopulations can be defined, the models that have been used to assess functions in the thymus, and models developed for other settings that can be potentially used for studying thymic DCs. In this study, novel phosphorescent dipyrido[3,2-a;2′3′-c]phenazine (dppz)–platinum(II)–phenylacetylide complexes were developed to fabricate non-doped organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) by solution-processing. To facilitate the charge carrier injection into the emitting layer (EML), 3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole-functinalized phenylacetylides were employed. As for the dppz ligand, 9,9-dihexylfluoren-2-yl and 4-hexylthiophen-2-yl side-arms were introduced to the 2,7-positions, which led to reddish orange and red photoluminescence (PL), respectively, in solution and film states (PL wavelength: ca. 600 and ca. 625 nm, respectively). The carbazole-appended phenylacetylide ligands hardly affected the emission color, although unsubstituted phenylacetylides gave rise to aggregate- or excimer-based near-infrared PL with a low quantum yield. Two types of non-doped OLEDs were fabricated: single-layer and multilayer devices. In both devices, the organic layers were fabricated by spin-coating, and the EML consisted of a neat film of the corresponding platinum(II) complex. Therein, electroluminescence spectra corresponding to those of PL were observed. The single-layer devices exhibited low device efficiencies due to a deteriorated charge carrier balance. The multilayer devices possessed hole- and electron-transporting layers on the anode and cathode sides of the EML, respectively. Owing to an improved charge carrier balance, the multilayer devices exhibited higher device performance, affording considerably improved values of luminance and external quantum efficiency. The utilization of chaotic optical communication, a physical layer security technology, has the potential to enhance the security of optical fiber networks. In this paper, we take knowledge acquired while teaching "A chaotic security system based on phase-intensity (P-I) electro-optic feedback" as an example and, in detail, introduce a teaching implementation process based on the combination of Optisystem and Matlab. Firstly, based on the Lang–Kobayashi (L-K) laser equation, the generation mechanism of electro-optic feedback chaos was explained. Secondly, the P-I electro-optic feedback chaos was analyzed theoretically with the help of Matlab. Finally, a laser chaotic optical communication system based on electro-optic feedback was built with the help of Optisystem (15.0.0) software, and the performance of the communication was simulated and analyzed through the design of system parameters. The teaching design model and facilitate the concretization of the abstract theory of "the principle of chaos generated by electro-optic feedback, the composition of chaotic optical communication system and the performance index of chaotic communication system". Through after-class exercises and questionnaire surveys, it was verified that the teaching method is widely recognized by students and that it effectively improves the teaching effect of the course of laser chaotic communication and the students' academic research ability. In the last decades, to improve the CAP treatment efficiency, its biological effects in combination with other physical modalities have widely investigated. However, the physical insight into most of supposed synergistic effects remained elusive. In this regard, the synergetic effect of cold plasma and magnetic field has been used for different applications, especially due to considerable synergistic in biological media reactivity. In the present paper, using a 420 mT N42 magnet, the effect of the perpendicular external static magnetic field (SMF) on the cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) characteristics, such as electron temperature and density, is investigated based on the optical emission spectroscopy, utilizing the Boltzmann plot method, Saha-Boltzmann equation, and Specair software simulation. Results showed that the rotational and electronic excitational temperatures experienced 100 K and 550 K increases in the presence of SMF, respectively. In contrast, the vibrational and translational temperatures remained constant. Moreover, electron temperature was estimated as 1.04 eV in the absence of SMF and increased up to 1.24 eV in the presence of SMF. In addition, the Saha-Boltzmann equation illustrated that the electron density increased in the presence of the additional SMF. The results of the present study indicated that the magnetic field could be an assistant to the cold plasma effect, beneficial in medical applications due to modifications in plasma temperature and electron density. The amplitude of a bolt load in dynamically loaded bolted flange joints depends on several factors: the resilience of the bolt and the clamping parts, the magnitude of the working load, the point of action of the working load, the way the working load is transferred from the structure to the bolt, the preload, and the geometrical imperfections of the contact surfaces of the joint. These factors are analysed in many papers, and they are covered in the VDI 2230 guideline and in standards. Fatigue curves (S-N curves) of bolts are determined by tests in which an ideal axial load is usually applied to the bolts. The effects of the bolt strength class, the thread manufacturing process, the surface protection, and the cross-section size on the fatigue strength of bolts are precisely defined. The main problem in the evaluation of bolted joints is the calculation of the actual stress, which is compared with the fatigue curves. Despite extensive research, fatigue-related bolt failures still occur in practise. This article provides a systematic overview of the influences that affect the fatigue of bolts. The conclusions are based on the research results of many authors and on our own analytical, numerical, and experimental investigations. The effects are illustrated using two practical examples of flange bolting. The assessment of fatigue according to Eurocode 3 and the VDI 2230 guideline is discussed in more detail. The process of glass transition during the quenching in the domain with the cold wall has been numerically simulated. We have implemented the temperature-dependent form of the previously proposed theoretical model, which combined the heat transfer in the domain and the gauge theory of glass transition, assuming the presence of topologically stable distortions (disclinations) in the forming solid. The competition between crystallization (formation of polycrystalline structure) and the formation of the amorphous disordered phase has been shown. At the relatively slow cooling rates corresponding to the formation of the crystalline phase, we observed a columnar to equiaxed transition qualitatively similar to the observed in many metallic alloys. The moving front followed the equilibrium isotherm corresponding to the equilibrium temperature of transition in the disclinations subsystem, although front drag resulted in the effect of kinetic undercooling and the emergence of the maximum velocity of the crystallization front. High thermal conductivity values associated with the substantial heat flux lead to the bulk amorphous state. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin and serves as an essential co-enzyme for five specific carboxylases. Holocarboxylase synthase (HCS) activates biotin and facilitates its covalent attachment to these enzymes, while biotinidase releases free biotin in the biotin cycle. The transport of biotin, primarily from the intestine, is mediated by the sodium-dependent multi-vitamin transporter (SMVT). Severe biotin deficiency leads to multiple carboxylase deficiency. Moreover, biotin is crucial to glucose and lipid utilization in cellular energy production because it modulates the expression of metabolic enzymes via various signaling pathways and transcription factors. Biotin also modulates the production of proinflammatory cytokines in the immune system through similar molecular mechanisms. These regulatory roles in metabolic and immune homeostasis connect biotin to conditions such as diabetes, dermatologic manifestations, and multiple sclerosis. Furthermore, deficiencies in biotin and SMVT are implicated in inflammatory bowel disease, affecting intestinal inflammation, permeability, and flora. Notably, HCS and probably biotin directly influence gene expression through histone modification. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the molecular aspects of biotin and associated molecules in diseases related to both acute inflammatory responses and chronic inflammation, and discuss the potential therapeutic applications of biotin. N-nitrosamines and nitrosamine drug substance related impurities (NDSRIs) became a critical topic for the development and safety of small molecule medicines following the withdrawal of various pharmaceutical products from the market. To assess the mutagenic and carcinogenic potential of different N-nitrosamines lacking robust carcinogenicity data, several approaches are in use including the published carcinogenic potency categorization approach (CPCA), the Enhanced Ames Test (EAT), in vivo mutagenicity studies as well as read-across to analogue molecules with robust carcinogenicity data. We employ quantum chemical calculations as a pivotal tool providing insights into the likelihood of reactive ion formation and subsequent DNA alkylation for a selection of molecules including e.g., carcinogenic N-nitrosopiperazine (NPZ), N-nitrosopiperidine (NPIP), together with N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as well as non-carcinogenic N-nitrosomethyl-tert-butylamine (NTBA) and bis (butan-2-yl) (nitros)amine (BBNA). In addition, a series of nitrosomethylaminopyridines is compared side-by-side. We draw comparisons between calculated reaction profiles for structures representing motifs common to NDSRIs and those of confirmed carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic molecules with in vivo data from cancer bioassays. Furthermore, our approach enables insights into reactivity and relative stability of intermediate species that can be formed upon activation of several nitrosamines. Most notably, we reveal consistent differences between the free energy profiles of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic molecules. For the former, the intermediate diazonium ions mostly react, kinetically controlled, to the more stable DNA adducts and less to the water adducts via transition-states of similar heights. Non-carcinogenic molecules yield stable carbocations as intermediates that, thermodynamically controlled, more likely form the statistically preferred water adducts. In conclusion, our data confirm that quantum chemical calculations can contribute to a weight of evidence approach for the risk assessment of nitrosamines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Canine oral disease has been associated with significant changes in the oral microbiome rather than the presence or absence of individual species. In addition, most studies focus on a single age group of canines and as of yet, the relationship between canine microbiomes and age is poorly understood. Methods: This study used a shotgun whole gene sequencing approach in tandem with the Aladdin Bioinformatics platform to profile the microbiomes of 96 companion dogs, with the sourmash-zymo reference database being used to perform taxonomic profiling. Results: Findings showed significant age correlations among 19 species, including positive correlations among several Porphyromonas species and a negative correlation with C. steedae. Although a significant correlation was found between predicted and actual ages, ElasticNet Regression was unable to successfully predict the ages of younger canines based on their microbiome composition. Both microbiome samples and microbial species were successfully clustered by age group or age correlation, showing that the age-microbiome relationship survives dimensionality reduction. Three distinct clusters of microbial species were found, which were characterized by Porphyromonas, Conchiformibius, and Prevotella genera, respectively. Discussion: Findings showed that the microbiomes of older dogs resembled those that previous literature attributed to dogs with periodontal disease. The g tensor, which determines the reaction of Kramers-degenerate states to an applied magnetic field, is of increasing importance in the current design of spin qubits. It is affected by details of heterostructure composition, disorder, and electric fields, but it inherits much of its structure from the effect of the spin-orbit interaction working at the crystal-lattice level. Here, we uncover interesting symmetry and topological features of g = gL + gS for important valence and conduction bands in silicon, germanium, and gallium arsenide. For all crystals with high (cubic) symmetry, we show that large departures from the nonrelativistic value g = 2 are guaranteed by symmetry. In particular, considering the spin part gS(k), we prove that the scalar function det(gS(k)) must go to zero on closed surfaces in the Brillouin zone, no matter how weak the spin-orbit coupling is. We also prove that for wave vectors k on these surfaces, the Bloch states junki have maximal spin-orbital entanglement. Using tight-binding calculations, we observe that the surfaces det(g(k)) = 0 exhibit many interesting topological features, exhibiting Lifshitz critical points as understood in Fermi-surface theory. Each year, due to climate change, an increasing number of new pathogens are being discovered and studied, leading to an increase in the number of known diseases affecting various fish species in different regions of the world. Viruses from the family Iridoviridae, which consist of the genera Megalocytivirus, Lymphocystivirus, and Ranavirus, cause epizootic outbreaks in farmed and wild, marine, and freshwater fish species (including ornamental fish). Diseases caused by fish viruses of the family Iridoviridae have a significant economic impact, especially in the aquaculture sector. Consequently, vaccines have been developed in recent decades, and their administration methods have improved. To date, various types of vaccines are available to control and prevent Iridoviridae infections in fish populations. Notably, two vaccines, specifically targeting Red Sea bream iridoviral disease and iridoviruses (formalin-killed vaccine and AQUAVAC® IridoV, respectively), are commercially available. In addition to exploring these themes, this review examines the immune responses in fish following viral infections or vaccination procedures. In general, the evasion mechanisms observed in iridovirus infections are characterised by a systemic absence of inflammatory responses and a reduction in the expression of genes associated with the adaptive immune response. We propose a method to perform a configuration determination for chiral and/or polar crystals by utilizing anisotropy of NMR shift. The chirality (handedness) or polarity of a crystal, that is characterized by its sign, can be extracted from the asymmetric magnetic-field angle dependence of NMR shift in the appropriate plane, as the configuration is reflected in the off-diagonal components of the shift tensor. This method is applicable to the triclinic, monoclinic, and trigonal crystal structures among 230 crystallographic space groups, and the appropriate planes to extract the asymmetric field-angle dependence are tabulated for all relevant space groups. We discuss how to determine the appropriate plane, and to identify each contribution of twin domains, and so on, by using the specific examples of Te, IrSn4, and RhSn4, and the spontaneous symmetry-breaking phases of URhSn. We also argue that an absolute-configuration determination is also possible in accordance with the relation between chirality or polarity of crystal and the sign of the relevant off-diagonal component of the shift tensor, provided by theoretical evaluation of internal magnetic field from surrounding ions, and/or by experimental input on the shape of the asymmetric etch pit on the cleaved face of crystal. Social interactions are inevitable in the lives of most animals, since most essential behaviours require interaction with conspecifics, such as mating and competing for resources. Non-avian reptiles are typically viewed as solitary animals that predominantly use their vision and olfaction to communicate with conspecifics. Nevertheless, in recent years, evidence is mounting that some reptiles can produce sounds and have the potential for acoustic communication. Reptiles that can produce sound have an additional communicative channel (in addition to visual/olfactory channels), which could suggest they have a higher communicative complexity, the evolution of which is assumed to be driven by the need of social interactions. Thus, acoustic reptiles may provide an opportunity to unveil the true social complexity of reptiles that are usually thought of as solitary. This review aims to reveal the hidden social interactions behind the use of sounds in non-avian reptiles. Our review suggests that the potential of vocal and acoustic communication and the complexity of social interactions may be underestimated in non-avian reptiles, and that acoustic reptiles may provide a great opportunity to uncover the coevolution between sociality and communication in non-avian reptiles. Objective(s): A simple noninvasive microsphere (SIMS) method using 123I-IMP and an improved brain uptake ratio (IBUR) method using 99mTc-ECD for the quantitative measurement of regional cerebral blood flow have been recently reported. The input functions of these methods were determined using the administered dose, which was obtained by analyzing the time activity curve of the pulmonary artery (PA) for SIMS and the ascending aorta (AAo) for the IBUR methods for dynamic chest images. If the PA and AAo regions of interest (ROIs) can be determined using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) for segmentation, the accuracy of these ROI-setting methods can be improved through simple analytical operations to ensure repeatability and reproducibility. The purpose of this study was to develop new PA and AAo-ROI setting methods using a DCNN (DCNN-ROI method). Methods: A U-Net architecture based on convolutional neural networks was used to determine the PA and AAo candidate regions. Images of 290 patients who underwent 123I-IMP RI-angiography and 108 patients who underwent 99mTc-ECD RI-angiography were used. The PA and AAo-ROI results for the DCNN-ROI method were compared to those obtained using manual methods. The counts for the input function on the PA and AAo-ROI were determined by integrating the area under the curve (AUC) counts of the time-activity curve of PA and AAo-ROI, respectively. The effectiveness of the DCNN-ROI method was elucidated through a comparison with the integrated AUC counts of the DCNN-ROI and the manual ROI. Results: The coincidence ratio for the locations of the PA and AAo-ROI obtained using the DCNN method and that for the manual method was 100%. Strong correlations were observed between the AUC counts using the DCNN and manual methods. Conclusion: New ROI-setting programs were developed using a deep convolution neural network DCNN to determine the input functions for the SIMS and IBUR methods. Background: Brain magnetic resonance imaging voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) are useful for differentiating dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Purpose: To determine whether combining multiple parameters of VBM and SPECT using a multiparametric scoring system (MSS) improves diagnostic accuracy in differentiating DLB from AD. Material and Methods: In total, 23 patients with DLB and 57 patients with AD underwent imaging using a voxel-based specific regional analysis system for AD (VSRAD), an easy Z-score imaging system, and a Z-Graph using three-dimensional stereotactic surface projection. The cutoff values were determined using the receiver operating characteristic curve to differentiate DLB from AD for all parameters. Patients were scored 1 (DLB) or 0 (AD) for each statistically significant parameter, according to a threshold. The total score was determined for each case to obtain a cutoff value for the MSS. Results: The mean Z-scores in the medial temporal lobes using the VSRAD were significantly lower in patients with DLB than in those with AD. Each Z-score of the summed Z-scores in all four segmented regions of the occipital lobes using the Z-Graph was significantly higher in patients with DLB than in those with AD. Among the five parameters, the highest accuracy was 80% for the Z-score of the summed Z-scores in the left medial occipital lobe. For the MSS, a cutoff value of four improved the diagnostic accuracy to 82%. Conclusion: MSS was more accurate than any single parameter of VBM or SPECT in differentiating DLB from AD. According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), aquaculture has grown faster and its expansion aimed at meeting the increase of world fish demand, and preserving natural fish stocks. Currently, to produce fish in quantity and quality requires reduction of the environmental impact from aquaculture, through the improvement of culture systems. Disease is the major factor affecting the development and expansion in aquaculture. Losses due to disease in shrimp farming are high. Various approaches to minimize the impact of disease on production are possible. Another approach to keep the pathogen pressure low is polyculture of shrimp and finfish. This practice makes shrimp farming more sustainable by reducing the environmental impact and the incidence of shrimp disease. Antimicrobial peptides in the fish skin kill shrimp pathogens, keeping pathogen pressure of bacteria and viruses low. In polyculture, shrimps can eat tilapia faeces and unused fish feed, while tilapia filter phytoplankton, reducing the risk of low dissolved oxygen levels at night. In addition, shrimp bioturbation at the pond bottom returns nutrients to the water column, enhancing phytoplankton production and consequently the natural feed available for the tilapia. Biofloc technology (BFT) is one of the most applicable and promising systems for sustainable aquaculture development. This technology is essentially based on the recycling of nutrients via microorganisms, primarily (i) heterotrophic bacteria, which convert nitrogen compounds into microbial biomass, in addition to serves as a source of food for aquatic organisms, and (ii) chemoautotrophic bacteria, which convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrate. Background: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) presents with various symptoms, posing challenges for early diagnosis challenging. Dopamine transporter (123I-FP-CIT) single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) and 123I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (123I-MIBG) imaging are crucial diagnostic biomarkers. Hypothesis about body- and brain-first subtypes of DLB indicate that some DLB may show normal 123I-FP-CIT or 123I-MIBG results; but the characteristic expression of these two subtypes remains unclear. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity of 123I-FP-CIT and 123I-MIBG imaging alone, combined in patients with DLB and explore symptoms associated with the abnormal imaging results. Methods: Demographic data, clinical status, and imaging results were retrospectively collected from patients diagnosed with possible DLB. Both images were quantified using semi-automated software, and the sensitivity of each imaging modality and their combination was calculated. Demographic data, cognition, and motor and non-motor symptoms were compared among the subgroups based on the imaging results. Symptoms related to each imaging abnormality were examined using binomial logistic regression analyses. Results: Among 114 patients with DLB, 80 underwent 123I-FP-CIT SPECT (sensitivity: 80.3%), 83 underwent 123I-MIBG imaging (68.2%), and 66 both (sensitivity of either abnormal result: 93.9%). Visual hallucinations differed among the four subgroups based on imaging results. Additionally, nocturia and orthostatic hypotension differed between abnormal and normal 123I-MIBG images. Conclusions: Overall, 123I-FP-CIT SPECT was slightly higher sensitivity than 123I-MIBG imaging, with combined imaging increasing diagnostic sensitivity. Normal results of a single imaging test may not refute DLB. Autonomic symptoms may lead to abnormal 123I-MIBG scintigraphy findings indicating body-first subtype of patients with DLB. The present study aimed to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of the Al/Cu joint production process implemented by the company VEMID Ltd., Jagodina, Serbia, by attaining sound joints within a very short welding time. For this purpose, the present study aimed at investigating the accuracy and the quality of the continuous drive friction welding (CDFW) process, as well as the optimum combination of CDFW parameters with highest joint efficiency in terms of investigated properties. The accuracy was estimated through an analysis of temperature–time curves recorded during CDFW using an infrared camera. The quality was evaluated through an investigation of the properties of Al/Cu joints produced using different friction (66.7, 88.9, and 133.3 MPa) and forging (88.9, 222.2, and 355.6 MPa) pressures and a constant total welding time (4 s) and rotational speed (2100 rpm). Thermal imaging with an infrared camera demonstrated that the actual total welding time was 15% longer compared to the nominal value. This was attributed to the slow pressure response of the pneumatic brake system. The relative changes in the maximum surface temperature (TMS) during the CDFW process corresponded to changes in welding pressures, indicating the potential of the thermal imaging method for monitoring and assessing this process. A preliminary investigation demonstrated that Al/Cu joints produced using welding pressures less than 88.9 MPa often displayed the presence of non-joined micro-regions at the Al/Cu interface and a significant thickness of interfacial Al2Cu (up to 1 µm). However, when friction pressure was set at 66.7 MPa, an increase in the forging pressure to 222.2 MPa eliminated the presence of non-joined micro-regions and reduced the thickness of Al2Cu to 0.5 µm on the average level. These Al/Cu joints achieved the highest joint efficiencies in terms of strength (100%) and ductility (61%). They exhibited an electrical conductivity higher than 92% of the theoretical value. A further increase in any welding pressure produced similar or deteriorated properties, accompanied by an increase in the consumption of raw materials and energy. Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone supporting the teeth. The aim of the study was to investigate the microbiota using traditional microbiology plating and metagenomic sequencing of extracted tooth alveoli in dogs with severe periodontitis. Isolation of culturable microorganisms was performed as part of bacteriological testing to provide bacteriological diagnosis to veterinary surgeons. Metagenomic sequencing was performed using shotgun sequencing on the Illumina HiSeq system platform. The most prevalent species at sites of periodontal infection detected by metagenomic sequencing were Porphyromonas gulae, Prevotella spp., Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas crevioricanis, Porphyromonas cangingivalis, and Bacteroides heparinolyticus. Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Neisseria were the most frequently isolated culturable bacteria from infected sites detected by traditional microbiologic methods. Metagenomic data revealed that these three genera accounted for only 1.6% of all microbiota at the sites of infection. Antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolated bacteria included resistance to ampicillin, doxycycline, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin, colistin, cefotaxime, and chloramphenicol. Antimicrobial-resistant genes detected using shotgun sequencing also showed resistance to aminoglycosides and macrolides. Dogs with periodontal infections carry bacteria that can cause bite infections in humans as well as multi-resistant isolates. We study the performance scaling of three quantum algorithms for combinatorial optimization: measurement-feedback coherent Ising machines (MFB-CIM), discrete adiabatic quantum computation (DAQC), and the Dürr–Høyer algorithm for quantum minimum finding (DH-QMF) that is based on Grover's search. We use MaxCut problems as a reference for comparison, and time-to-solution (TTS) as a practical measure of performance for these optimization algorithms. For each algorithm, we analyze its performance in solving two types of MaxCut problems: weighted graph instances with randomly generated edge weights attaining 21 equidistant values from −1 to 1; and randomly generated Sherrington–Kirkpatrick (SK) spin glass instances. We empirically find a significant performance advantage for the studied MFB-CIM in comparison to the other two algorithms. We empirically observe a sub-exponential scaling for the median TTS for the MFB-CIM, in comparison to the almost exponential scaling for DAQC and the proven O ̃ 2 n scaling for DH-QMF. Background: H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) infections typically occur in early childhood. Although the prevalence of H. pylori in children is lower than that in adults, the eradication rate of this infection in children is relatively low because of resistance. In this study, we analyzed personalized treatment strategies to achieve treatment goals based on H. pylori resistance characteristics. This retrospective single-center study was conducted between January 2019 and December 2022 and enrolled 1,587 children who presented with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and underwent endoscopy. H. pylori culturing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed. Results: Culture-positive results for H. pylori were obtained in 535 children. The resistance rates to clarithromycin (CLA), metronidazole (MET), and Levofloxacin (LEV) were 39.8%, 78.1%, and 20.2%, respectively. None of the isolates were resistant to tetracycline (TET), amoxicillin (AMO), or furazolidone (FZD). Double resistance rates to CLA + MET, CLA + LEV, and MET + LEV were 19.1%, 3.0%, and 5.8%, respectively. Notably, triple-resistant to CLA + MET + LEV was 9.7%. Based on susceptibility tests, individualized triple therapy [proton pump inhibitor (PPI) +AMO + CLA/MET] was selected for 380 children with H. pylori sensitive to MET and/or CLA. In 155 children resistant to CLA and MET, bismuth-based quadruple therapy was recommended; for unable to receive bismuth, concomitant therapy was recommended for 14 children (<8 years of age); triple therapy with TET was recommended for 141 children (>8 years of age), with 43 children (>14 years of age) requiring FZD rather than TET. Conclusion: Resistance to H. pylori in Chinese children was relatively poor. Red seabream iridovirus (RSIV) is a major cause of marine fish mortality in Korea, with no effective vaccine available since its first occurrence in the 1990s. This study evaluated the efficacy of a formalin-killed vaccine against RSIV in rock bream under laboratory and field conditions. For the field trial, a total of 103,200 rock bream from two commercial marine cage-cultured farms in Southern Korea were vaccinated. Farm A vaccinated 31,100 fish in July 2020 and monitored them for 18 weeks, while farm B vaccinated 30,700 fish in August 2020 and monitored them for 12 weeks. At farm A, where there was no RSIV infection, the vaccine efficacy was assessed in the lab, showing a relative percentage of survival (RPS) ranging from 40% to 80%. At farm B, where natural RSIV infections occurred, cumulative mortality rates were 36.43% in the vaccinated group and 80.32% in the control group, resulting in an RPS of 54.67%. The RSIV-infectious status and neutralizing antibody titers in serum mirrored the cumulative mortality results. This study demonstrates that the formalin-killed vaccine effectively prevents RSIV in cage-cultured rock bream under both laboratory and field conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Endocan, secreted from the activated endothelium, is a key player in inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and angiogenesis. We aimed to investigate the link between endocan and aortic stiffness in maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients. Materials and Methods: After recruiting HD patients from a medical center, their baseline characteristics, blood sample, and anthropometry were assessed and recorded. The serum endocan level was determined using an enzyme immunoassay kit, and carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) measurement was used to evaluate aortic stiffness. Results: A total of 122 HD patients were enrolled. Aortic stiffness was diagnosed in 53 patients (43.4%), who were found to be older (p = 0.007) and have a higher prevalence of diabetes (p < 0.001) and hypertension (p = 0.030), higher systolic blood pressure (p = 0.011), and higher endocan levels (p < 0.001), when compared with their counterparts. On the multivariate logistic regression model, the development of aortic stiffness in patients on chronic HD was found to be associated with endocan [odds ratio (OR): 1.566, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.224–2.002, p < 0.001], age (OR: 1.040, 95% CI: 1.001–1.080, p = 0.045), and diabetes (OR: 4.067, 95% CI: 1.532–10.798, p = 0.005), after proper adjustment for confounders (adopting diabetes, hypertension, age, systolic blood pressure, and endocan). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.713 (95% CI: 0.620–0.806, p < 0.001) for predicting aortic stiffness by the serum endocan level, at an optimal cutoff value of 2.68 ng/mL (64.15% sensitivity, 69.57% specificity). Upon multivariate linear regression analysis, logarithmically transformed endocan was proven as an independent predictor of cfPWV (β = 0.405, adjusted R2 change = 0.152; p < 0.001). Liver cancer remains one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide with high incidence and mortality rates. Due to its subtle onset, liver cancer is commonly diagnosed at a late stage when surgical interventions are no longer feasible. This situation highlights the critical role of systemic treatments, including targeted therapies, in bettering patient outcomes. Despite numerous studies on the mechanisms underlying liver cancer, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are the only widely used clinical inhibitors, represented by sorafenib, whose clinical application is greatly limited by the phenomenon of drug resistance. Here we show an in-depth discussion of the signaling pathways frequently implicated in liver cancer pathogenesis and the inhibitors targeting these pathways under investigation or already in use in the management of advanced liver cancer. We elucidate the oncogenic roles of these pathways in liver cancer especially hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as well as the current state of research on inhibitors respectively. Given that TKIs represent the sole class of targeted therapeutics for liver cancer employed in clinical practice, we have particularly focused on TKIs and the mechanisms of the commonly encountered phenomena of its resistance during HCC treatment. This necessitates the imperative development of innovative targeted strategies and the urgency of overcoming the existing limitations. This review endeavors to shed light on the utilization of targeted therapy in advanced liver cancer, with a vision to improve the unsatisfactory prognostic outlook for those patients. There is a lack of systematic research exploring cross-species variation in liver lobular geometry and zonation patterns of critical drug-metabolizing enzymes, a knowledge gap essential for translational studies. This study investigated the critical interplay between lobular geometry and key cytochrome P450 (CYP) zonation in four species: mouse, rat, pig, and human. We developed an automated pipeline based on whole slide images (WSI) of hematoxylin-eosin-stained liver sections and immunohistochemistry. This pipeline allows accurate quantification of both lobular geometry and zonation patterns of essential CYP proteins. Our analysis of CYP zonal expression shows that all CYP enzymes (besides CYP2D6 with panlobular expression) were observed in the pericentral region in all species, but with distinct differences. Comparison of normalized gradient intensity shows a high similarity between mice and humans, followed by rats. Specifically, CYP1A2 was expressed throughout the pericentral region in mice and humans, whereas it was restricted to a narrow pericentral rim in rats and showed a panlobular pattern in pigs. Similarly, CYP3A4 is present in the pericentral region, but its extent varies considerably in rats and appears panlobular in pigs. CYP2D6 zonal expression consistently shows a panlobular pattern in all species, although the intensity varies. CYP2E1 zonal expression covered the entire pericentral region with extension into the midzone in all four species, suggesting its potential for further cross-species analysis. Analysis of lobular geometry revealed an increase in lobular size with increasing species size, whereas lobular compactness was similar. Based on our results, zonated CYP expression in mice is most similar to humans. Therefore, mice appear to be the most appropriate species for drug metabolism studies unless larger species are required for other purposes, e.g., surgical reasons. CYP selection should be based on species, with CYP2E1 and CYP2D6 being the most preferable to compare four species. CYP1A2 could be considered as an additional CYP for rodent versus human comparisons, and CYP3A4 for mouse/human comparisons. Background: Although proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or potassium-competitive acid blocker (PCAB) are useful in peptic ulcer prevention, their efficacy in preventing other gastrointestinal bleeding remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the status of gastrointestinal bleeding in the modern era when PPIs are widely used. Methods: This study included patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between 2018 and 2019 at two high-volume centers. Patients were categorized based on whether they experienced gastrointestinal bleeding within 2 years of PCI into groups A (patients who experienced gastrointestinal bleeding within 2 years after PCI) and B (patients who did not experience gastrointestinal bleeding). Results: Groups A and B included 21 (4.1%) and 494 (95.9%) patients, respectively (a total of 515 patients). Age at the initial PCI (77.8±2.4 and 72.0±0.5 years in groups A and B, respectively; p = 0.02), weight (53.8±3.2 and 61.8±0.7 kg in groups A and B, respectively; p = 0.01), and concomitant warfarin use (14.3% and 2.0% in groups A and B, respectively; p = 0.0005) were significantly different between the groups. The high bleeding risk rate (90.5% and 47.6% in groups A and B, respectively; p = 0.0001) was significantly different between the groups. A total of 95.9% of patients were taking PPIs or PCAB without significant differences between the groups. However, only one patient, who was taking steroids, had a gastric ulcer during PCAB treatment. Conclusions: Acid-related upper gastrointestinal bleeding is largely controlled by PPIs in post-PCI patients. Furthermore, the risk factors for non-acid-related bleeding include older age, lower weight, and concomitant warfarin use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, for which cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone with rituximab(R–CHOP) is one of the standard regimens. Given that R–CHOP is highly emetogenic, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) prevention is clinically important. However, there is a paucity of studies focusing on these patients. This study aimed to ascertain the effectiveness of an oral fixed-dose combination of netupitant and palonosetron (NEPA) in preventing CINV in patients with DLBCL undergoing first-line R-CHOP chemotherapy. Seventy patients were enrolled in this single-center prospective non-comparative study conducted between November 2020 and May 2023 in South Korea. NEPA was administered 1 h prior to chemotherapy initiation on day 1. The primary endpoint of the study was the complete response rate (no emesis, and no rescue medication) during the acute, delayed, and overall phases, which were assessed over a period of 120 h post-chemotherapy. The complete response rates for NEPA were 90.0% [95% CI 80.5, 95.9] for the acute phase, 85.7% [95% CI 75.3, 92.9] for the delayed phase, and 84.3% [95% CI 73.6, 91.9] for the overall phase, with no-emesis rates (acute: 97.1% [95% CI 97.1, 99.7], delayed: 95.7% [95% CI 88.0, 99.1], overall: 92.9% [95% CI 84.1, 97.6]). NEPA was well tolerated with no severe treatment-emergent adverse events. NEPA exhibited substantial efficacy in mitigating CINV in DLBCL patients undergoing R–CHOP chemotherapy, demonstrating high CR and no-emesis rates, and favorable safety profiles.
