Globally, the issue of research impact has grown as governments articulate policies around research as a contributor to economic and societal development, often through an econometric justification. This has triggered much discussion amongst humanities scholars in public formally-reasoned peer-reviewed texts that are rarely empirically-based. This Denmark-based empirical study used an individual biographical and historical structural framework to explore how humanities academics in face-to-face semi-formal interactive interviews viewed this issue. The results highlighted a nuanced understanding of what we call the humanities-impact landscape, with three potential interactions falling along a continuum suggesting further inquiry is warranted. The study contributes a rich tapestry of the interwoven individual and structural elements at play when academics articulate how they locate themselves within the landscape, ones that might not be seen in more conceptual arguments. AbstractDiscussions about the role of universities have long been framed in terms of questions of what is good for the public, as well as how and whether higher education serves that good. Today, the language of ‘societal impact’ has become an accepted way for policymakers to frame the matter, but just who is included in the underlying definition of society that this formulation presupposes? In this paper, we consider how ‘society’ has been constructed in discussions of the societal impact of humanities research in Denmark, through an engagement with legislation, national political commentary, and institutional policy. We draw on the work of Martin Heidegger and Simone Weil to analyse, through an ontology of policy approach, the vision of society these policies construct. Simple Summary: To advance the national rabies control effort in Cambodia, a coalition comprising government and non-government organizations spearheaded a short-duration canine rabies vaccination campaign in the capital province of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, and the neighboring Kandal Province. The campaign was conducted over 10 days to establish significant herd immunity to stop dog-mediated rabies transmission. The campaign deployed 120 vaccination teams, each consisting of two vaccinators and one tuk-tuk driver. Parenteral rabies vaccines were delivered using a door-to-door method. Utilizing the mobile application, the teams received spatial guidance during the campaign and performed data collection. The campaign vaccinated 74,983 dogs in just 10 days, achieving the district mean coverage of 70.7% among the owned dog population in Phnom Penh Province. The implementation of such a large-scale campaign in a short space of time created a blueprint for mass dog vaccination in urban areas, contributing to upscaling rabies control strategies across Cambodia. Background: WHO and WOAH advocate for annual high-coverage canine rabies vaccination campaigns as the most sustainable approach to eliminate the risk of dog rabies transmission to humans. It is estimated that Cambodia has one of the highest human rabies deaths per capita of any country (5.8 human deaths per 100,000 people), highlighting the urgent need to implement an effective canine rabies vaccination program. Results: A total of 74,983 dogs were vaccinated, giving a mean vaccination rate of 62.5 dogs per team per day. An additional 2145 cats were vaccinated. Of all dogs encountered by the teams, 84.0% could be vaccinated, with 99.1% of those being identified as owned. Post-vaccination surveys of 4356 households estimated a mean vaccination coverage of 70.7% in owned dogs across the districts of Phnom Penh Province. Conclusion: Short-duration, large-scale canine rabies vaccination campaigns can achieve high vaccination coverage using a door-to-door approach in urban centers of Cambodia. Data gathered through the campaign yielded insights to support the refinement and planning of a wider rabies control strategy and is anticipated to drive further support for subsequent campaigns in Cambodia. This paper presents a massively parallel, cloud-computing framework for the ad hoc evaluation of discrete-event simulation (DES) models to enable broad exploration of the design space for model parameters. Parallel evaluation is enabled through use of a serverless computing environment allowing thousands of simultaneous experiments, on demand, without the need to explicitly provision or manages hardware. A standard Simulation Evaluation application programming interface (API) was designed for evaluating simulation functions that enables language independence between client application and simulation model, encouraging reuse of simulation models for multiple purposes (what-if analysis, ranking and selection, sensitivity analysis, or optimization). Extensions to the Java Simulation Library (JSL)27 enable rapid deployment of models built with the JSL as parameterized serverless functions implementing the Simulation Evaluation API. Koopman operator theory has gained interest as a framework for transforming nonlinear dynamics on the state space into linear dynamics on abstract function spaces, which preserves the underlying nonlinear dynamics of the system. These spaces can be approximated through data-driven methodologies, which enables the application of classical linear control strategies to nonlinear systems. Here, a Koopman linear quadratic regulator (KLQR) was used to acoustically control the nonlinear dynamics of a single spherical bubble, as described by the well-known Rayleigh–Plesset equation, with several objectives: (1) simple harmonic oscillation at amplitudes large enough to incite nonlinearities, (2) stabilization of the bubble at a nonequilibrium radius, and (3) periodic and quasiperiodic oscillation with multiple frequency components of arbitrary amplitude. The results demonstrate that the KLQR controller can effectively drive a spherical bubble to radially oscillate according to prescribed trajectories using both broadband and single-frequency acoustic driving. This approach has several advantages over previous efforts to acoustically control bubbles, including the ability to track arbitrary trajectories, robustness, and the use of linear control methods, which do not depend on initial guesses. When unpaid female carers consider whether to pursue higher education (HE), they frequently experience decision-making uncertainties which stem from the structural and cultural challenges associated with their roles as carers. Reflexivity is a critical part of decision-making, as it empowers individuals to mediate between the present and future within the structural and cultural conditions which impact and guide their actions. To investigate the reflexive deliberation processes unpaid female carers engage in as part of their HE decision-making processes, this study analysed data from an in-depth, qualitative Australian study with 15 unpaid female carers who were considering higher education. Dialogic processes including narrative interviews and a card sort activity made visible the array of mental activities involved in reflexive decision-making by carers. Considering the more and less productive types of reflexive inner conversations which had been identified enabled participants to reflexively adjust the efficacy of some of their decision-making processes. This study contributes to the reflective and career counselling literature by theorising the cognitively and emotionally complex personal and structural demands of HE decision-making. By conceptualising reflexive decision-making anew, unpaid female carers and HE institutions can better identify and address the structural and cultural conditions which may be influencing their HE decision-making. The border-crossing nature of science is well recognised, and has long been a focus of policy-makers with an interest in governing this space. The international aspect of the humanities is less clearly understood, and the extent to which it has been a focus of policy is similarly not well conceptualised. UNESCO's efforts in this area provide a useful corpus of texts through which international humanities policy can be explored. Drawing on Theodor Adorno's negative dialectics, this paper considers what UNESCO's attempts at developing international humanities policy have to say about the ontological status of the humanities, and of policy itself. In setting out an ontology of policy, it generates a concept of 'world humanities' as a means of reconstituting the humanities its own specific mode of inquiry and form of knowledge. The development of compact, low power, charge–neutral propulsion sources is of significant recent interest due to the rising application of micro-scale satellite platforms. Among such sources, radio frequency (rf) electrothermal microthrusters present an attractive option due to their scalability, reliability, and tunable control of power coupling to the propellant. For micropropulsion applications, where available power is limited, it is of particular importance to understand how electrical power can be transferred to the propellant efficiently, a process that is underpinned by the plasma sheath dynamics. In this work, two-dimensional fluid/Monte Carlo simulations are employed to investigate the effects of applied voltage frequency on the electron, ion, and neutral heating in an rf capacitively coupled plasma microthruster operating in argon. Variations in the electron and argon ion densities and power deposition, and their consequent effect on neutral-gas heating, are investigated with relation to the phase-averaged and phase-resolved sheath dynamics for rf voltage frequencies of 6–108 MHz at 450 V. Driving voltage frequencies above 40.68 MHz exhibit enhanced volumetric ionization from bulk electrons at the expense of the ion heating efficiency. Lower driving voltage frequencies below 13.56 MHz exhibit more efficient ionization due to secondary electrons and an increasing fraction of rf power deposition into ions. Thermal efficiencies are improved by a factor of 2.5 at 6 MHz as compared to the more traditional 13.56 MHz, indicating a favorable operating regime for low power satellite applications. Non-equilibrium inductively coupled plasmas (ICPs) operating in hydrogen are of significant interest for applications including large-area materials processing. Increasing control of spatial gas heating, which drives the formation of neutral species density gradients and the rate of gas-temperature-dependent reactions, is critical. In this study, we use 2D fluid-kinetic simulations with the Hybrid Plasma Equipment Model to investigate the spatially resolved production of atomic hydrogen in a low-pressure planar ICP operating in pure hydrogen (10–20 Pa or 0.075–0.15 Torr, 300 W). The reaction set incorporates self-consistent calculation of the spatially resolved gas temperature and 14 vibrationally excited states. We find that the formation of neutral-gas density gradients, which result from spatially non-uniform electrical power deposition at constant pressure, can drive significant variations in the vibrational distribution function and density of atomic hydrogen when gas heating is spatially resolved. This highlights the significance of spatial gas heating on the production of reactive species in relatively high-power-density plasma processing sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In vitro preclinical drug-induced liver injury (DILI) risk assessment relies largely on the use of hepatocytes to measure drug-specific changes in cell function or viability. Unfortunately, this does not provide indications toward the immunogenicity of drugs and/or the likelihood of idiosyncratic reactions in the clinic. This is because the molecular initiating event in immune DILI is an interaction of the drug-derived antigen with MHC proteins and the T-cell receptor. This study utilized immune cells from drug-naïve donors, recently established immune cell coculture systems and blinded compounds with and without DILI liabilities to determine whether these new methods offer an improvement over established assessment methods for the prediction of immune-mediated DILI. Ten blinded test compounds (6 with known DILI liabilities; 4 with lower DILI liabilities) and 5 training compounds, with known T-cell-mediated immune reactions in patients, were investigated. Naïve T-cells were activated with 4/5 of the training compounds (nitroso sulfamethoxazole, vancomycin, Bandrowski's base, and carbamazepine) and clones derived from the priming assays were activated with drug in a dose-dependent manner. The test compounds with DILI liabilities did not stimulate T-cell proliferative responses during dendritic cell-T-cell coculture; however, CD4+ clones displaying reactivity were detected toward 2 compounds (ciprofloxacin and erythromycin) with known liabilities. Drug-responsive T-cells were not detected with the compounds with lower DILI liabilities. This study provides compelling evidence that assessment of intrinsic drug immunogenicity, although complex, can provide valuable information regarding immune liabilities of some compounds prior to clinical studies or when immune reactions are observed in patients. Understanding the interactions between different RNA modifications is essential for unraveling their biological functions. Here, we report NanoPsiPy, a computational pipeline that employs nanopore direct RNA sequencing to identify pseudouridine (Ψ) sites and quantify their levels at single-nucleotide resolution. We validated NanoPsiPy by transcriptome-wide profiling of PUS7-dependent Ψ sites in poly-A RNA and rRNA. NanoPsiPy leverages Ψ-induced U-to-C basecalling errors in nanopore sequencing data, allowing detection of both low and high stoichiometric Ψ sites. We identified 8,624 PUS7-dependent Ψ sites in 1,246 mRNAs encoding proteins associated with ribosome biogenesis, translation, and energy metabolism. Importantly, integrative analysis revealed that PUS7 knockdown increases global mRNA N 6 -methyladenosine (m 6 A) and 5-methylcytosine (m 5 C) levels, suggesting an antagonistic relationship between Ψ and these modifications. Our study underscores the potential of nanopore direct RNA sequencing in revealing the co-regulation of RNA modifications and the capacity of NanoPsiPy in analyzing pseudouridylation and its impact on other RNA modifications.
