CLIMATE change adaptation , *RENEWABLE energy transition (Government policy) , *WIND power , *FISHING villages , *FISH communities - Abstract
The energy transition is Brazil's main policy in the context of adapting to and mitigating climate change, especially through the installation of wind energy projects. However, at the same time, the energy transition is used as a strategy to diversify the investment portfolios of transnational corporations, resulting in territorial impacts for communities located in the vicinity of these energy projects. The objective of this article is to discuss how the energy transition results in territorial impacts on the traditional fishing community of Enxu Queimado, located in the municipality of Pedra Grande, on the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. To achieve this objective, quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used, including carrying out fieldwork in the community in the year 2023. With the research it is possible to conclude that the energy transition from the centralized energy generation model has been carried out from the violation of territorial rights of traditional communities, configuring the agrarian issue. The question is: energy transition or a new frontier for the expansion of capital? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accelerating renewable energy deployment is imperative to address the climate crisis, yet projects commonly face community resistance and local cancellation. Accordingly, interest has risen in social impact assessments (SIAs) to evaluate social viability and strengthen management. However, mainstream approaches overlook upstream political economy dynamics that shape projects and drive opposition. Analyzing renewable developments in Mexico reveals how international negotiations and national policies produce rushed, large-scale projects in marginalized territories, igniting rural social struggles. While SIA practices can be enhanced, upstream policies constrain their scope to reshape misaligned projects and performance to address complex sociocultural contexts. This prompts questioning why vulnerable regions bear concentrated impacts and the need to explore alternative development pathways, despite SIAs implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecuador is a small Andean country located in the western hemisphere of South America. The country has 361;747hm3 annual superficial water resources; As a result, Ecuador, in the last fifteen years (2005 to 2020), has been rapidly developing hydropower projects to triple the production in this renewable source. There were eight new hydroelectric plants constructed in Ecuador among 2007 and 2015 invested close to USD 6 billion the projects. Increased the energy response with renewables; for example, in 1985, the country produced 4 TWh, in 2005-registered 7 TWh, and to 2020, 24 TWh. According to the Electricity Corporation of Ecuador in 2020 reported that generated around 80% of all electricity through hydropower; thus, the article aims to critically analyze the development of hydropower in Ecuador in recent years and establish general energy projections to 2030 to expand the fields of knowledge and perspectives. The paper methodology is quantitative, according to scientific editorial sources, articles, investigative documents, and collects data from government agencies that regulate energy development in Ecuador. It is conclusive between a projection's calculation, Ecuador will need for the year 2030 around 43 TWh, 47 TWh, or 52 TWh to supply the energy grid, according to the scenarios proposed (low, medium, high). Although hydropower will be essential to contribute to this requirement, the country has a barrier because hydropower is very sensitive to external factors of diverse nature, generating an uncertainly future directly associated with climatic effects. PHOTOVOLTAIC power systems , *PHOTOVOLTAIC power generation , *ENERGY industries , *INTERNAL rate of return , *ECONOMIC indicators , *ENERGY consumption - Abstract
Brazil is a tropical country with favorable conditions for the generation and utilization of solar energy. This energy source becomes even more attractive when considering the dry periods that impact hydroelectric power generation in the country, resulting in an increase in energy costs reflected monthly in consumers' bills through tariff flags. In order to enhance residential architectural designs and promote energy efficiency, a feasibility study of photovoltaic systems was conducted, considering key economic indicators and the current tariff flags. To accomplish this, research was conducted in collaboration with Mounting Companies for a case study located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, adopting technical assumptions commonly used for residential photovoltaic system sizing. For the graphical sizing of the case study, factors such as the environment and summer and winter solstices were taken into account, and a shadow study was conducted to assess the potential loss of power generation by the photovoltaic system throughout the year. The shadow study revealed that, during both solstices, the optimal time for power generation by photovoltaic systems is between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Essentially, the calculated values of NPV (Net Present Value) and IRR (Internal Rate of Return) indicate that the project is economically viable and particularly advantageous during the yellow and red tariff flags, situations in which energy costs tend to be higher for consumers. ENVIRONMENTAL degradation , *RAW materials , *LIGNOCELLULOSE , *FOSSIL fuels , *EUCALYPTUS globulus - Abstract
Atmospheric pollution and accelerated environmental deterioration for the increasing use of fossil fuels have directed research in the energy field towards the search for alternative, renewable, efficient and, above all, more environmentally friendly sources. Among the raw materials that are of great interest in the generation of biofuels are lignocellulosic residues, which are currently produced in abundant quantities, either by the simple action of nature or because they are part of the agro-industrial chain of a given region. For this reason in the present work, the biomass of Eucalyptus globulus was evaluated as a low-cost and widely available source for obtaining liquid biofuel, for which a preliminary physical and chemical characterization was carried out, by considering established standard specifications. Thermochemical conversion tests were carried out by pyrolysis in an N2 atmosphere and through the application of a factorial experimental design (22) contemplating the influence of experimental variables such as residence time and temperature, it was possible to obtain at 550 °C and during 20 min of reaction, a bio-oil with a maximum yield of 45,2 % and whose physical and chemical properties are within the range estimated in the literature for biofuels of lignocellulosic origin, such as the calorific value (16,7 MJ/kg). Therefore, the biomass of Eucalyptus globulus can be considered as a raw material with potential to be explored in the generation of energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The main objective of this end of degree project relies on applying a scaling methodology to a reference 15 MW wind turbine in order to reach a capacity of 20 MW. This reference wind turbine has been defined by the International Energy Agency (IEA), although it has not yet been physically installed. In addition, it has been essential as a reference model for structural and aerodynamic analyses. Owing to the involvement in the community forum of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States, it has been possible to acquire extensive knowledge on the analysis of the scaling of wind turbines. This forum has enabled the formulation of technical questions about wind turbines, seeing practical examples, and to appreciate experiences from other researchers in the field of wind energy, which has been essential for the progress of this undergraduate thesis. Throughout the project, it is discussed how this resource has been used to solve doubts about wind turbines, especially in areas such as structural dynamics and aerodynamic analysis. This end of degree project presents the results obtained from simulations conducted in OpenFAST software for both wind turbine models, focusing especially on relevant parameters for aeroelastic analysis. The simulations were performed over a range of turbulent wind speeds, from cut-in (3 m/s) to cut-out (25 m/s). The results obtained using OpenFAST significantly enhanced the understanding of wind turbine parameters. OpenFAST was adopted in this project after becoming familiar with its predecessors, which are Fastv7 (7th version) and Fastv8 (8th version). The key OpenFAST modules that have been employed are the following: ElastoDyn for structural dynamics, InflowWind for wind characterization, Aerodyn for aerodynamic modeling, and ServoDyn for electrical and control aspects. Although the controller design was beyond the scope of this research, ServoDyn was fundamental for analysing and adjusting parameters such as power

- Abstract
The objective of the report is to explain the methodology for developing a baseline to provide energy access to communal services in Kobe camp and its host community. This baseline is part of the Alianza Shire project, which seeks to provide energy to communal services through a mini-grid, supported by a sustainable management model in the Kobe refugee camp and host community in Ethiopia. The methodology included a review of international initiatives, local information gathered through surveys, data analysis and prioritization of communal services. The level of energy access was assessed using the Multi-Tier Framework (MTF) and load profiles were conducted to determine current and potential energy demands. Studying the Level of Energy Access according to the MTF, most of the communal services in Kobe are at the lowest level (Tier 0) of energy access, reflecting capacity, availability and reliability issues. When studying the current and potential demand, the current and potential load profiles of the communal services were identified, highlighting that the educational facilities would consume 60.22% of the total energy in future scenarios, with consumption concentrated in peak hours.

- Abstract

- Abstract
A two-step methodology based on noise analysis techniques was applied to detect and monitor a resonance to do with a control rod-related anomaly, notified as SLOW in a BWR-6 core. The methodology utilizes LPRM (Local Power Range Monitor) neutron flux signals. The first step involves applying traditional noise analysis to all available neutron detector signals. Both NAPSDs (Normalized Auto Power Spectral Density) and CPSDs (coherences and phases) were estimated. The second step uses EMD (Empirical Mode Decomposition) and VMD (Variational Mode Decomposition) in a sequence of successive decompositions which allow both the resonance under study to be isolated in only one IMF (Intrinsic Mode Functions) and the main resonance peak parameters (frequency, amplitude, and damping) to be estimated. On the one hand, it was possible to delimit the zone where perturbation takes place, though the phenomenon seemed to be quite local and not all detectors could provide information on it. On the other hand, intrinsic mode functions make it possible to observe traces of potential instrumentation tube impacts in the Hilbert Spectrum. The methodology proved to be very effective to monitor resonances even when these were not visible in the spectrum. The changes observed coincide with the corrective actions carried out by the plant.

- Abstract
While the effects of climate change are already being felt in many parts of the world, societies are compelled to drastically rethink the way they produce and manage energy, to reduce the greenhouse-gases emissions associated to the sector. Urban areas are a critical piece of the puzzle to achieve the energy transition and reach the ambitious climate targets set out at global and European scales. Positive energy districts (PEDs), a new concept introduced in 2018 by the Strategic Energy Technology Plan, constitute a bottom-up response to this massive problematic and an opportunity to accelerate the transition towards low-carbon energy models in cities. However, their deployment is currently facing a set of diverse and complex challenges, mainly arising from their novelty and the lack of practical experience. In that context, the contribution of the present review of the literature is twofold. First, it seeks to provide a broad perspective of the advances of the research on PEDs with a special focus on applied studies and practical experiences. Then, it aims to identify substantial challenges that are currently slowing down PEDs effective operationalization, and study to what extent researchers and practitioners are currently approaching them. To that end, 135 papers are selected, categorized, and analysed according to their topics, locations, climates, districts, studied solutions and social concerns. As a result, the paper gives an overview of the main trends and necessities of PEDs research and practice and draws recommendations on how to adequately address identified challenges.

- Abstract
Finding strategies that promote sustainability in the recovery of metals with industrial applications is imperative to reduce costs and mitigate environmental impacts. The use of environmentally friendly reagents such as glycine is being widely investigated due to the benefits that its application entails from an industrial, economic, and environmental perspective. We sought through this study to advance in the application of glycine leaching systems for the recovery of copper from different wastes and minerals while determining the optimal conditions for its recovery. Experimental results showed that among the 3 feedstocks tested (two mining wastes and one sulfide mineral) under the established operating conditions (room temperature and different alkaline pHs), the best copper recovery was obtained with the most oxidized waste at pH 9.5, which allowed a 100% of copper recovery along with low leaching of Fe and As. Furthermore, the characterization of its final post-leaching residue showed phytostimulant properties. Unfortunately, these selected conditions did not yield favorable results for the sulfide mineral and the less oxidized wastes. In this case, further research will be necessary to achieve higher metal recoveries.

- Abstract
The BC501A sensor is a liquid scintillator frequently used in nuclear physics for detecting fast neutrons. This paper describes a hardware implementation of digital pulse shape analysis (DPSA) for real-time analysis. DPSA is an algorithm that extracts the physically relevant parameters from the detected BC501A signals. The hardware solution is implemented in a MicroTCA system that provides the physical, mechanical, electrical, and cooling support for an AMC board (NAMC-ZYNQ-FMC) with a Xilinx ZYNQ Ultrascale-MP SoC. The Xilinx FPGA programmable logic implements a JESD204B interface to high-speed ADCs. The physical and datalink JESD204B layers are implemented using hardware description language (HDL), while the Xilinx high-level synthesis language (HLS) is used for the transport and application layers. The DPSA algorithm is a JESD204B application layer that includes a FIR filter and a constant fraction discriminator (CFD) function, a baseline calculation function, a peak detection function, and an energy calculation function. This architecture achieves an analysis mean time of less than 100 µs per signal with an FPGA resource utilization of about 50% of its most used resources. This paper presents a high-performance DPSA embedded system that interfaces with a 1 GS/s ADC and performs accurate calculations with relatively low latency.

- Abstract
The electrical characteristics of solar cells are significantly influenced by the metallization process, making it a crucial step. Screen printing is the standard metallization technique, but there is an increasing interest in the development of methods that allow more versatility, higher process control, and a more efficient use of the expensive metallic pastes used. We focus here on the comparison between the standard screen-printing method, and Light-Induced Forward-Transfer (LIFT), a non-contact, very precise technique, able to transfer volumes down to picolitres. The high flexibility, using free-form designs that do not depend on any mask or physical support, and the efficient use of the metallic paste with almost no waste, are other characteristics that point out LIFT as a very promising alternative. In this paper we include the electric characterization of contacts, and solar silicon heterojunction (SHJ) cells metalized with both techniques. The results show a slightly better efficiency for the screen-printed cells, but good series resistance and fill factor values imply that LIFT is a promising alternative for device metallization.

- Abstract
What is so-called ‘green’ extractivism and where did it come from? The introduction to this Special Section examines the origins and implications of the concept, linking it to a long history of exploitation, dispossession and (neo)colonialism under the guise of green-washing notions such as ‘sustainable development.’ Conducting an in-depth literature review, we first revisit the concept of extractivism, exploring its origins, development and analytical purchase. We link extractivism to ‘extra-action, ’ implying taking more than what is viable for ecosystems and argue for a supply-web oriented, rather than a point of extraction-focused understanding. Subsequently, we examine key theoretical frameworks in political ecology that paved the way to the study of ‘green’ extractivism, notably Ecological Distribution Conflicts (which we argue could better be labeled Ecological Destruction Conflicts) and green grabbing. Based on this, we discuss the core features of green extractivism, which are twofold: (1) the use of socioecological and climate crises to reinforce existing or generate new markets and profit-generation opportunities; and (2) the mobilization of claims of ecological sustainability and ‘carbon neutrality’ to legitimize and rationalize extraction. After outlining the Special Section contributions, we end by considering gaps in existing scholarship on green extractivism and suggest ways forward.

- Abstract

- Abstract
[ENG] In recent years, renewable energies have reached a significant level of development, especially photovoltaics, for which Gigawatt plants can already be found in operation. In this respect, it is necessary to provide suitable solutions that allow máximum use of the energy generated. Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) grids offer numerous advantages in this respect, with a growing trend towards direct connection to the grid, without the need for bulky and heavy low-frequency transformers. To achieve transformerless Medium Voltage levels, it is possible to take the traditional two-level converter approach; or the multilevel approach. The latter has been widely developed in recent years, with Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) being the most prominent in photovoltaic applications. Initially, it was proposed to achieve the multilevel configuration by means of the single-phase association of cascaded inverters, however, this solution had the risk of injecting energy in an unbalanced way into the grid and heavily penalised the design of the decoupling capacitors, which came to represent an important part of the overall cost of the converter. This was because the capacitors had to filter a current twice the grid frequency and with an amplitude similar to the DC current provided by the photovoltaic panels. The three-phase association of inverters was proposed as a solution to both problems. However, the reduction of the capacitors will depend on the type of DC/DC converter used. This PhD thesis originates from the need to select the best solution for the DC/DC stage of a multilevel converter applied to a three-phase association of cascaded inverters, so that a significant reduction in the size of the converter capacitors can be achieved. To this end, a series of design characteristics for a grid-connected photovoltaic multilevel converter are proposed as a basis for the selection of this DC/DC stage. As part of this preliminary phase, several aspects relating to the operation of the multil

[EN] In recent years, a shift towards more sustainable energy systems has been observed, characterised by the transition towards a greater contribution from renewable energy sources. Among them, one of the most widely used and with great global potential is energy generated by wind. In particular, offshore wind energy is experiencing accelerated growth due to characteristics such as the need for new sites that incorporate advantages such as higher wind speeds due to lower roughness, higher energy production, lower environmental impact. In this context, the objective of this Final Degree Thesis is to study the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of an offshore wind farm located off Spain. To do so, it initially analyses the current legislation, contextualises the present situation and examines the evolution of offshore wind energy, as well as exploring both the advantages and barriers affecting the development of this sector. A wind resource assessment is then carried out to obtain information to facilitate the design and sizing of the wind farm. Later on, various models of wind turbines are studied, as well as different types of foundations and varieties of electrical infrastructure, in order to choose the most suitable option. Subsequently, the location of the wind farm is selected considering several factors such as the depth of the seabed, the characteristics of the wind resource and the proximity to the coastline. Once the optimal site has been chosen, the design of an offshore wind farm is carried out, including the necessary calculations to determine the annual energy production generated by the farm. In addition, an environmental impact assessment needs to be carried out to examine the possible consequences of the park's implementation and to identify preventive measures. To conclude the park study, an economic feasibility analysis is included to assess the profitability of the project.

- Abstract
ABSTRACT Since the self-consumption photovoltaic energy had its boom in 2019, the installations have been growing exponentially to the point that, it is predicted, that the installed self-consumption power in Spain can be between 20 and 30 GW in 2030. This project studies and sizes a photovoltaic installation in a single-family house in Extremadura. An analysis of the consumption will be made with the bill of one complete year of the house, being able to estimate the optimal power needed to adapt the installation to this consumption. For the calculations justifying this project, software, and computer tools such as PVSyst and Excel will be used. The technical-economic aspects will be analyzed considering that to carry out a photovoltaic installation it is necessary to have a certain economic solvency and a house with some minimum requirements for the installation to be viable. We will also consider the social and environmental impact produced by t

- Abstract
ABSTRACT In 2023, the student Javier Veiga Serra completed his Final Degree Project: “Feasibility Study of Repowering a Wind Farm Based on Simulations with WASP,” supervised by Professor Emilio Migoya Valor. Starting with the study of the wind resource, a project was developed with the aim of repowering the Los Llanos wind farm (Málaga). In this way, the wind farm was redesigned to achieve greater electrical power with new wind turbines. This Final Degree Project completes the design of the Los Llanos wind farm for repowering from an electrical perspective. Based on the locations of the new wind turbines determined in Javier Veiga's project, the necessary electrical installation is designed to evacuate the newly established power. For this sizing: the initial electrical substation has been expanded, a medium
