Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a serious global environmental problem, which requires a global concern and practical solutions. Microbial remediation has received widespread attention owing to advantages, such as environmental friendliness and soil amelioration. However, Cd toxicity also severely deteriorates the remediation performance of functional microorganisms. Analyzing the mechanism of bacterial resistance to Cd stress will be beneficial for the application of Cd remediation. In this study, the bacteria strain, up to 1400 mg/L Cd resistance, was employed and identified as Proteus mirabilis Ch8 (Ch8) through whole genome sequence analyses. The results indicated that the multiple pathways of immobilizing and detoxifying Cd maintained the growth of Ch8 under Cd stress, which also possessed high Cd extracellular adsorption. Firstly, the changes in surface morphology and functional groups of Ch8 cells were observed under different Cd conditions through SEM-EDS and FTIR analyses. Under 100 mg/L Cd, Ch8 cells exhibited aggregation and less flagella; the Cd biosorption of Ch8 was predominately by secreting exopolysaccharides (EPS) and no significant change of functional groups. Under 500 mg/L Cd, Ch8 were present irregular polymers on the cell surface, some cells with wrapping around; the Cd biosorption capacity exhibited outstanding effects (38.80 mg/g), which was mainly immobilizing Cd by secreting and interacting with EPS. Then, Ch8 also significantly enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activity and the antioxidant substance content under different Cd conditions. The activities of SOD and CAT, GSH content of Ch8 under 500 mg/L Cd were significantly increased by 245.47%, 179.52%, and 241.81%, compared to normal condition. Additionally, Ch8 significantly induced the expression of Acr A and Tol C (the resistance-nodulation-division (RND) efflux pump), and some antioxidant genes (SodB, SodC, and Tpx) to reduce Cd damage. In particular, the markedly higher expression levels of SodB under Cd stress. The mechanism of Ch8 lays a foundation for its application in solving soil remediation.

Purpose: To report the effect of topical application of recombinant human nerve growth factor (rhNGF) eye drops on corneal epithelial regeneration in patients with refractory epitheliopathy. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients treated with topical rhNGF for refractory epithelial keratopathy due to stage I neurotrophic keratitis (NK). Data regarding demographics and ocular/systemic past medical history was extracted from patient charts. Visual acuity and corneal staining scores were recorded at baseline and subsequent follow-up visits at 8 weeks and 3 months. Measurements from the worse eye were used to compare before and after treatment values. Results: We identified 14 patients (median age 68 years, 21% male) who received rhNGF treatment for refractory epithelial keratopathy. After an 8-week treatment with topical rhNGF, the median corneal staining score in the worse eye improved from 4 to 1 (p = 0.001). All patients showed at least one-grade improvement in corneal staining at 8 weeks, with sustained effect in seven patients at 3 months. A better response was observed in eyes with post-radiation epithelial keratopathy, LASIK, and Sjogren's disease. Those with chronic use of other topical treatments and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus demonstrated incomplete responses. Eight patients reported mild-to-moderate ocular discomfort from drop application that fully resolved after completion of treatment. Conclusions: Topical rhNGF was effective and safe for refractory epithelial keratopathy in our small cohort, but sustained effects were seen only in certain etiologies for up to 3 months. Subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forest (EBLF) is the predominant vegetation type in eastern China. However, the majority of the region it covers in eastern China was an arid area during the Paleogene. The temporal history and essential factors involved in the evolution of subtropical EBLFs in eastern China remain enigmatic. Here we report on the niche evolution of Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis, which appeared in south China and Japan during the Eocene and became a dominant component of subtropical EBLFs since the Miocene in eastern Asia, using integrative analysis of occurrences, climate data and a dated phylogeny of 35 species in Cyclobalanopsis. Species within clades Cyclobalanoides, Lamellosa, and Helferiana mainly exist in the Himalaya–Hengduan region, adapting to a plateau climate, while species within the other clades mainly live in eastern China under the control of the East Asian monsoon. Reconstructed history showed that significant divergence of climatic tolerance in Cyclobalanopsis began around 19 million years ago (Ma) in the early Miocene. Simultaneously, disparities in precipitation of wettest/warmest quarter and annual precipitation were markedly enhanced in Cyclobalanopsis, especially in the recent eastern clades. During the Miocene, the marked radiation of Cyclobalanopsis and many other dominant taxa of subtropical EBLFs strongly suggest the rapid formation and expansion of subtropical EBLFs in eastern China. Our research highlights that the intensification of the East Asian monsoon and subsequent occupation of new niches by the ancient clades already present in the south may have jointly promoted the formation of subtropical EBLFs in eastern China since the early Miocene. PurposeMethodsResultsConclusionTo describe refractive error findings and associated factors in students who received school-based eye exams following vision screenings.Cross-sectional study of pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students who failed vision screening and underwent a school-based eye exam in the Northeast region of the United States during 2016–2022. Non-cycloplegic autorefraction and visual acuity measurements were used to categorize refractive error by type and severity. Main outcomes included any refractive error (at least −0.50D myopia, +0.50 hyperopia, 1.00D astigmatism, or 1.00D anisometropia), clinically significant refractive error (CSRE; more severe refractive error with decreased vision), and refractive amblyopia risk (RAR). Multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression was used to determine student- and school-level characteristics associated with refractive error outcomes.Of 103,159 included students who failed screening, 95,875 (92.9%) were analyzed. Overall prevalence of any refractive error was 94.2%, with 81.7% having CSRE. Pre-kindergarten & kindergarten students had the highest prevalence of CSRE (85.7%), which dropped to 77.0% by 3rd and 4th grade before rising with each higher grade level thereafter. Prevalence of RAR was 60.9% overall and highest in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students (73.8%). Myopia was the most prevalent refractive error, followed by astigmatism, anisometropia, then hyperopia. The odds of hyperopia, astigmatism, and anisometropia decreased with higher grade level.Over 80% of students who failed vision screening at a large school-based vision program had CSRE, and over 60% had RAR. The generation and presence of excessive hypochlorous acid derivative ionic form (ClO−) could cause various diseases, such as arteriosclerosis, DNA damage, and cardiovascular illness. It is a critical need to develop a highly sensitive sensor for reliable detection of ClO− in cells and water-soluble systems. In this work, a hydroxyl group has been introduced into the compound 2-amino-3-(((E)-4-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl)-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-6-yl)benzylidene)amino)maleonitrile (NDC) to increase its solubility in water, at the same time, the hydrazone unit was designed as a specific recognition group for the "off–on" fluorescence probe of ClO−. The probe NDC presents high selectivity, sensitivity, anti-interference, and low detection limit (67 nM) for ClO−. The recognition mechanism that ClO− breaks the C=N bond and forms the fluorescent compound 4-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl)-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-6-yl)benzaldehyde (ND-3) has been confirmed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The probe NDC presents a good performance in the actual test of water samples and can be designed as the test papers for the quick and convenient detection of ClO− range from 0 to 1 μM. Moreover, the practical application was demonstrated by the successful imaging of endogenous and exogenous ClO− in HeLa cells. Our fluorescent biomass-based platform opens vast possibilities for repeatability, sensitivity, and selectivity detection of ClO− in cells and water-soluble systems. Objective: School-based vision programs (SBVPs) deliver vision care services directly to students at school, helping address disparities in access to pediatric vision care. We aim to evaluate the associations between SBVP outcomes and school-level characteristics., Design: Retrospective cross-sectional data analysis PARTICIPANTS: Public schools with at least 50 SBVP-enrolled students 5 to 22 years old with complete demographic data. Schools with fewer than 60% of total grade levels served by the SBVP were excluded, resulting in a sample of 410 schools., Methods: Vision screening and eye exam data were extracted from Helen Keller International's United States Vision Program dataset from 2016 through 2022. Individual student data were aggregated to characterize each school's SBVP outcomes and analyzed with schools' publicly available socioeconomic and demographic data (student body race and ethnicity composition, proportion of students qualifying for free and reduced-price meals [FARM%], and proportion of English Language Learners). Descriptive statistics summarized SBVP outcomes. Fractional regression models were utilized to understand associations between SBVP outcomes and school characteristics., Main Outcome Measures: SBVP outcomes were rates of vision screening failure, eyeglasses prescription, and community eye care referral among each school's SBVP-enrolled students., Results: We evaluated 151 (36.8%) elementary, 155 (37.8%) middle, and 104 (25.4%) high schools, with a median FARM% of 87.4% and a plurality of Hispanic students in 61.0% of schools. Overall median rates of vision screening failure, eyeglasses prescription, and referral were 38.4%, 25.2%, and 5.4%, respectively. High schools were associated with increased screening failure and eyeglasses prescription rates and a decrease in referral rate, compared with elementary schools. In multivariate analysis, each 10% increase in FARM% was associated with a 2.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.54-3.65), 1.8% (CI: 0.87-2.74), and 0.86% (CI: 0.36-1.36) increase in screening failure, eyeglasses prescription, and referral rates, respectively., Conclusions: There is significant vision care demand among public schools, especially those with student populations from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. SBVPs are important in bridging the gap in pediatric vision care access in such populations. Pyroxenes (AMX 2 O 6 ) consisting of infinite one-dimensional edge-sharing MO 6 chains and bridging XO 4 tetrahedra are fertile ground for finding quantum materials. Thus, here, we have studied calcium cobalt germanate (CaCoGe 2 O 6 ) and calcium cobalt silicate (CaCoSi 2 O 6 ) crystals in depth. Heat capacity data show that the spins in both compounds are dominantly Ising-like, even after being manipulated by high magnetic fields. On cooling below the Néel temperatures, a sharp field-induced transition in magnetization is observed for CaCoGe 2 O 6 , while multiple magnetization plateaus beneath the full saturation moment are spotted for CaCoSi 2 O 6 . Our analysis shows that these contrasting behaviors potentially arise from the different electron configurations of germanium and silicon, in which the 3d orbitals are filled in the former but empty in the latter, enabling electron hopping. Thus, silicate tetrahedra can aid the interchain superexchange pathway between cobalt(II) ion centers, while germanate ones tend to block it during magnetization.

Introduction: Natural hybridization is common and plays a crucial role in driving biodiversity in nature. Despite its significance, the understanding of hybridization in ferns remains inadequate. Therefore, it is imperative to study fern hybridization to gain a more comprehensive understanding of fern biodiversity. Our study delves into the role of hybridization in shaping fern species, employing Microlepia matthewii as a case study to investigate its origins of hybridization., Methods: We performed double digest Genotyping-by-sequencing (dd-GBS) on M. matthewii and its potential parent species, identifying nuclear and chloroplast SNPs. Initially, nuclear SNPs were employed to construct the three cluster analysis: phylogenetic tree, principal component analysis, and population structure analysis. Subsequently, to confirm whether the observed genetic mixture pattern resulted from hybridization, we utilized two methods: ABBA-BABA statistical values in the D-suite program and gene frequency covariance in the Treemix software to detect gene flow. Finally, we employed chloroplast SNPs to construct a phylogenetic tree, tracing the maternal origin., Results and Discussion: The analysis of the nuclear SNP cluster revealed that M. matthewii possesses a genetic composition that is a combination of M. hancei and M. calvescens . Furthermore, the analysis provided strong evidence of significant gene flow signatures from the parental species to the hybrid, as indicated by the two gene flow analyses. The samples of M. matthewii cluster separately with M. hancei or M. calvescens on the chloroplast systematic tree. Abstract: This study aims to explore the value of real-time strain elastography (RTE) and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the diagnosis of breast BI-RADS 4 lesions. It collected 85 cases (totaling 85 lesions) diagnosed with breast BI-RADS 4 through routine ultrasound from October 2020 to December 2022 in Huangshan City People's Hospital. All lesions underwent RTE and CEUS examination before surgery, and the ImageJ software was used to measure the periphery of lesion images in the enhancement peak mode and grayscale mode to calculate the contrast-enhanced ultrasound area ratio. The diagnostic capabilities of single-modal and multimodal ultrasound examination for the malignancy of breast BI-RADS 4 lesions were compared using the receiver operating characteristic curve; the Spearman correlation analysis was adopted to evaluate the correlation between multimodal ultrasound and CEUS area ratio. As a result, among the 85 lesions, 51 were benign, and 34 were malignant. The areas under the curve (AUCs) of routine ultrasound (US), US + RTE, US + CEUS, and US + RTE + CEUS were 0.816, 0.928, 0.953, and 0.967, respectively, with the combined method showing a higher AUC than the single application. The AUC of the CEUS area ratio diagnosing breast lesions was 0.888. There was a strong positive correlation (r = 0.819, P < 0.001) between the diagnostic performance of US + RTE + CEUS and the CEUS area ratio.
