Introduction: Emotion recognition impairments and a tendency to misclassify neutral faces as negative are common in schizophrenia. A possible explanation for these deficits is aberrant salience attribution. To explore the possibility of salience driven emotion recognition deficits, we implemented a novel facial emotion salience task (FEST). Methods: Sixty-six healthy participants with variations in psychometric schizotypy completed the FEST. In the FEST, we manipulated physical salience (FEST-1: contrast, FEST-2: saturation) of emotionally salient (positive, i.e., happy and negative, i.e., fearful) and non-salient (neutral) facial expressions. Results: When salience was high (increased contrast), participants recognized negative facial expressions faster, whereas neutral faces were recognized more slowly and were more frequently misclassified as negative. When salience was low (decreased saturation), positive expressions were recognized more slowly. These measures were not associated with schizotypy in our sample. Discussion: Our findings show that the match between physical and emotional salience influences emotion recognition and suggest that the FEST is suitable to simulate aberrant salience processing during emotion recognition in healthy participants. The monitoring of hemodynamic parameters, such as heart rate and blood pressure, provides valuable indications of overall cardiovascular health. It is preferable that such monitoring is non-invasive and in real time via an affordable, compact and small-scale device for maximum convenience. Numerous literature sources have exploited derivations of these parameters from photoplethysmogram (PPG) and electrical bioimpedance (EBI) signal measurements through the use of calculation algorithms of varying complexity. Compared to electrocardiogram (ECG), these measurement techniques have a merit of well-established practices of designing a wearable device that could conveniently be put on a wrist. The current paper provides a comprehensive review on the use of PPG and EBI measurement techniques in the context of hemodynamic parameter monitoring using a wearable device. A special emphasis is placed on the most basic hemodynamic parameter—heart rate—describing different algorithms of heart rate detection and monitoring. The last section provides an overview of commercially available and in-home wearable device technologies based on PPG and EBI measurements, their design challenges, and future prospects. The etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsy is very heterogeneous and partly still unknown, and the research of causative genes related to these diseases is still in progress. In 2020, pathogenic variants of the TET3 gene were associated with Beck–Fahrner syndrome, which is characterized by neurodevelopmental delay, intellectual and learning disabilities of variable degree, growth abnormalities, hypotonia and seizures. Variants of TET3 have been described having both an autosomal dominant with a milder phenotype and an autosomal recessive pattern. To date, in the literature, only 28 patients are reported with pathogenic variants of the TET3 gene, and only 9 of them have epilepsy. We describe a 31-year-old woman with macrocephaly, mild neurodevelopmental delay and a long history of epilepsy. Trio-based exome sequencing identified a de novo heterozygous TET3 variant, c.2867G>A p.(Arg956Gln), never described before, absent in the general population and predicted to be potentially pathogenetic by bioinformatics tools. This report aims to describe the clinical history of our patient, the pharmacological treatment and clinical response, as well as the biological characteristics of this new variant. Background: Cannabis users present an important group for investigating putative mechanisms underlying psychosis, as cannabis-use is associated with an increased risk of psychosis. Recent work suggests that alterations in belief-updating under uncertainty underlie psychosis. We therefore compared belief updating under uncertainty between cannabis and non-cannabis users. Methods: 49 regular cannabis users and 52 controls completed the Space Game, via an online platform used for behavioral testing. In the task, participants were asked to predict the location of the stimulus based on previous information, under different uncertainty conditions. Mixed effects models were used to identify significant predictors of mean score, confidence, performance error and learning rate. Results: Both groups showed decreased confidence in high noise conditions, and increased belief updating in more volatile conditions, suggesting that they could infer the degree and sources of uncertainty. There were no significant effects of group on any of the performance indices. However, within the cannabis group, frequent users showed worse performance than less frequent users. Conclusion: Belief updating under uncertainty is not affected by cannabis use status but could be impaired in those who use cannabis more frequently. This finding could show a similarity between frequent cannabis use and psychosis risk, as predictors for abnormal belief-updating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wireless mesh network (WMN) which evolves from ad-hoc network is a type of self-healing, self-configuration, and multi-hop wireless network. Without expensive and fixed base stations, WMN can be established fast, easily, and flexibly with low cost. With the fast development of wireless communication, the required data rate and amount increase. As WMN can always provide broad communication access with better scalability, flexibility, and robustness, WMN can still play an important role in future and can bring a wide range of applications in next-generation communication. From the beginning till now, the focus of WMN transfers from sparse connection to intelligent dense networking. The wireless network in future will be more complex with different demands. Considering the features of WMN, this paper provides an overview of WMN from the point of view of next-generation communication. The application scenes including space-air-ground integrated network, Internet of Things, and edge computing are provided. When deploying WMN, the technologies suitable for the demands in next-generation communication, such as blockchain, software defined networking, network functions virtualization, and machine learning are discussed. Many natural saponins demonstrate immunostimulatory adjuvant activities, but they also have some inherent drawbacks that limit their clinical use. To overcome these limitations, extensive structure-activity-relationship (SAR) studies have been conducted. The SAR studies of QS-21 and related saponins reveal that their respective fatty side chains are crucial for potentiating a strong cellular immune response. Replacing the hydrolytically unstable ester side chain in the C28 oligosaccharide domain with an amide side chain in the same domain or in the C3 branched trisaccharide domain is a viable approach for generating robust semisynthetic saponin immunostimulants. Given the striking resemblance of natural momordica saponins (MS) I and II to the deacylated Quillaja Saponaria (QS) saponins (e.g., QS-17, QS-18, and QS-21), incorporating an amide side chain into the more sustainable MS, instead of deacylated QS saponins, led to the discovery of MS-derived semisynthetic immunostimulatory adjuvants VSA-1 and VSA-2. Expressing switched-inductor converter losses simply as a function of design variables is key for designers. Power losses in switched-inductor power supplies are varied in nature, and optimization schemes in the literature fail to account for all of them. Available core loss models are mostly empirical or rely on measurements or variables beyond the reach of power supply designers. Specifically, a simple core loss model is missing. This work offers complete design optimization of switched-inductor power supplies with a quadratic model of core loss that relies solely on design variables known to the designers—inductance and switching frequency (or inductor peak current). This model alleviates the burden of performing complex measurements to characterize the inductor—measurements that, moreover, require geometric data about the core, such as its size, which are often not disclosed by the manufacturer. Predicted minimum losses without approximation are within 3.2% of measured minimum losses, and predicted minimum losses with approximation are within 2.2% of measured minimum losses. This paper presents the design, simulation, prototyping, and measurement results of a digitally tunable fourth order Gm-C low-pass filter (LPF) for multi-standard radio receivers. The LPF cut-off frequency can be tunned by digitally selecting the transconductance of the basic reconfigurable operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) that compose the circuit. Four operation modes allow for control of the OTA transconductances and, consequently, the scaling of power consumption. The filter was designed and prototyped in a 1.8 V 180 nm CMOS process. The measurement results indicate that the configurability provides a cutoff frequency of 1.90/3.56/6.07/8.15 MHz with a power consumption ranging from 9.9 to 13.1 mW. The designed filter achieves an IIP3 of 8.17 dBm for a signal bandwidth of 8.15 MHz. The performance, in terms of power dissipation, noise, and cut-off frequency, is at the same order of magnitude compared to recent related works reported in the literature. The advantages are a compact area, small sensitivity to component mismatches, and low design complexity. This paper extensively sheds light on the performance of an Asymmetrical-gate Tunnel FET (A-TFET) under cryogenic temperatures (< 78 K) in terms of DC, Analog, and RF metrics. SILVACO ATLAS TCAD is implemented to invoke the device physics and subsequently characterize the lattice temperature parameters for facilitating the carrier transport in terms of device transfer characteristics, ION/IOFF ratio, subthreshold swing (SS). Steep profiles for ION/IOFF ratio and SS are observed at cryogenic temperatures representing superior device performance. Furthermore, the transconductance (gm) and transconductance generation factor (TGF) profiles are thoroughly investigated as a part of analog analysis while RF metrics like the transistor parasitic capacitances and cut-off frequency are investigated as well. The real-time fabrication complexity in terms of presence of interface traps for a damaged device has been compared with a fresh device with absence of interface traps in terms of transfer characteristics and gm at cryogenic and ambient temperatures thereby ensuring the CMOS compatibility of the A-TFET for quantum computing. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs) are microdevices fabricated using semiconductor-fabrication technology, especially those with moving components. This technology has become more widely used in daily life, e.g., in mobile phones, printers, and cars. In this review, MEMS sensors are largely classified as physical or chemical ones. Physical sensors include pressure, inertial force, acoustic, flow, temperature, optical, and magnetic ones. Chemical sensors include gas, odorant, ion, and biological ones. The fundamental principle of sensing is reading out either the movement or electrical-property change of microstructures caused by external stimuli. Here, sensing mechanisms of the sensors are explained using diagrams with equivalent circuits to show the similarity. Examples of multiple parameter measurement with single sensors (e.g. quantum sensors or resonant pressure and temperature sensors) and parallel sensor integration are also introduced. Silicon qubits based on specific SOI FinFETs and nanowire (NW) transistors have demonstrated promising quantum properties and the potential application of advanced Si CMOS devices for future quantum computing. In this paper, for the first time, the quantum transport characteristics for the next-generation transistor structure of a stack nanosheet (NS) FET and the innovative structure of a fishbone FET are explored. Clear structures are observed by TEM, and their low-temperature characteristics are also measured down to 6 K. Consistent with theoretical predictions, greatly enhanced switching behavior characterized by the reduction of off-state leakage current by one order of magnitude at 6 K and a linear decrease in the threshold voltage with decreasing temperature is observed. A quantum ballistic transport, particularly notable at shorter gate lengths and lower temperatures, is also observed, as well as an additional bias of about 1.3 mV at zero bias due to the asymmetric barrier. Additionally, fishbone FETs, produced by the incomplete nanosheet release in NSFETs, exhibit similar electrical characteristics but with degraded quantum transport due to additional SiGe channels. This work presents a rad-hard 12-bit 3 MS/s resistor string DAC for space applications. The converter has been developed using rad-hardened techniques both at architecture and layout levels starting from a conventional topology. The design considers the different effects of the radiation that could damage the circuits in space environments. The DAC has been developed and integrated a standard CMOS 0.13 μm technology by IHP, using RHBD techniques. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) requires a TID value of around 100 krad (Si), according to the expected length of the mission. The temperature range is between −55 °C and 125 °C. The DAC power budget is similar to that of terrestrial applications. The measured INL (Integral Non-Linearity) and DNL (Differential Non-Linearity) are better than 0.2 LSB, while the ENOB (Effective Number Of Bits) at a 3 MS/s clock exceeds 9.7 bits while loading a 10 pF capacitor. The DAC has been characterized under radiation, showing a fluctuation in the analog output lower than 2 LSB (mainly due to measurement uncertainty) up to 500 krad (Si). Power consumption shows a negligible increase, too. A 10-bit version of the same DAC as the downscaled 12-bit one has been developed as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review is aimed at the integrated circuit design community and it explores slew-rate enhancement techniques for switched-capacitor amplifiers, with a primary focus on optimizing settling time within power constraints. Key challenges are addressed, including the selection between single-stage and two-stage amplifiers, along with the utilization of advanced circuit-level techniques for slew-rate enhancement. Presently, there exists a gap in comprehensive discussion, with reliance primarily on two Figures of Merit aimed at assessing power efficiency under specific capacitive loads. However, these metrics fail to adequately assess the performance of the existing slew-rate enhancer solutions at different values of capacitive loads. As a consequence, the designer lacks clear guidelines in practical situations. This review provides a state-of-the art mapping under a figure of merit dedicated to assess the whole settling delay, and also introduces a novel performance metric which highlights the role of the circuital architectures, regardless of external operating conditions. By offering a thorough examination, this review seeks to steer future research in switched-capacitor amplifier design, thereby facilitating informed decision-making and fostering innovation in the field. As an intrinsically direct current device, quantum-dot LED cannot be directly driven by household alternating current electricity. Thus, a driver circuit is required, which increases the complexity and cost. Here, by using a transparent and conductive indium-zinc-oxide as an intermediate electrode, we develop a tandem quantum-dot LED that can be operated at both negative and positive alternating current cycles with an external quantum efficiency of 20.09% and 21.15%, respectively. Furthermore, by connecting multiple tandem devices in series, the panel can be directly driven by household alternating current electricity without the need for complicated back-end circuits. Under 220 V/50 Hz driving, the red plug-and-play panel demonstrates a power efficiency of 15.70 lm W−1 and a tunable brightness of up to 25,834 cd m−2. The developed plug-and-play quantum-dot LED panel could enable the production of cost-effective, compact, efficient, and stable solid-state light sources that can be directly powered by household alternating current electricity. Conventional lighting requires an AC-DC converter for LEDs. Here, the authors report a tandem structure by connecting two QLEDs with opposite polarity in parallel, enabling AC driven operation. This study introduces a readout integrated circuit (ROIC) tailored for multi-gas sensor arrays featuring a proposed baseline calibration scheme aimed at mitigating the issue of sensor baseline variation. Unlike previous approaches, the proposed scheme stores each sensor's baseline value and dynamically updates the signal extraction range accordingly during ROIC operation. This adjustment allows for the optimal use of the ROIC's dynamic range, enhancing sensor uniformity and accuracy without the need for complex additional circuitry or advanced post-processing algorithms. We fabricated a prototype ROIC using a 180 nm CMOS process, achieving a low power consumption of 0.43 mW and a conversion rate of 50 kSPS. The prototype boasts an integrated noise level of 9.9 μVRMS across a frequency range of 0.1 Hz to 5 kHz and a dynamic range of 142.6 dB, coupled with superior linearity, indicated by a maximum integral non-linearity (INL) of −75.71 dB. This design significantly reduces sensor offset scattering to within 1 LSB of the A/D reference scale. In this study, the efficacy of the proposed scheme was validated using Figaro TGS-2600. The ROIC targets a sensitivity range from 0.54 to 0.23 for gas concentrations ranging from 5 ppm to 20 ppm and a resolution of 39 Ω for sensor resistance range from 10 kΩ to 90 kΩ. This paper introduces a single-slope analog-to-digital converter (SS ADC) with an embedded digital baseline calibration scheme designed to improve the accuracy and reliability of gas sensor measurements. The proposed SS ADC effectively leverages an up/down counter mechanism to ensure stable signal extraction from gas sensors, despite variations in the baseline distribution. The proposed SS ADC initiates with a down counting operation to capture the initial output value of the gas sensor, which, after A/D conversion, is stored as a reference point for future readings. Subsequent gas sensor output values are derived by performing an up counting operation from this baseline reference. This approach allows for real-time correction of the baseline during the SS A/D conversion process, obviating the need for complex post-processing and baseline correction algorithms. The proposed SS ADC with the baseline calibration scheme was designed using a 0.18 μm standard CMOS process to confirm its feasibility. It demonstrated a signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 57.56 dB and a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 59.02 dB, resulting in an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 9.27 bits in the post-simulation level. The proposed SS ADC has a total power consumption of 1.649 mW. The MEMS microphone is a representative device among the MEMS family, which has attracted substantial research interest, and those tailored for human voice have earned distinct success in commercialization. Although sustained development persists, challenges such as residual stress, environmental noise, and structural innovation are posed. To collect and summarize the recent advances in this subject, this paper presents a concise review concerning the transduction mechanism, diverse mechanical structure topologies, and effective methods of noise reduction for high-performance MEMS microphones with a dynamic range akin to the audible spectrum, aiming to provide a comprehensive and adequate analysis of this scope. Metal oxide gas sensors usually require a few tens of milliwatts of power consumption to operate at high temperature, which limits their application in mobile and portable devices. Here, we proposed a cantilever structure to build an ultra-low power gas sensor for hydrogen sulfide gas detection. By employing a nano-film size effect to reduce the thermal conductivity of the material, and self-heated corrugation configuration, the power consumption of the gas sensor is significantly reduced. Through numerical analysis and finite element simulation, two different gas sensors were designed and the power consumption and stress distribution were analyzed and optimized. Under the operating temperature of 200 °C, only 0.27 mW power is consumed, the stress value is less than 250 MPa and the displacement is a few hundred of nanometers. Implantable microelectrodes arrays are used to record electrical signals from surrounding neurons and have led to incredible improvements in modern neuroscience research. Digital signals resulting from conditioning and the analog-to-digital conversion of neural spikes captured by microelectrodes arrays have to be elaborated in a dedicated DSP core devoted to a real-time spike-sorting process for the classification phase based on the source neurons from which they were emitted. On-chip spike-sorting is also essential to achieve enough data reduction to allow for wireless transmission within the power constraints imposed on implantable devices. The design of such integrated circuits must meet stringent constraints related to ultra-low power density and the minimum silicon area, as well as several application requirements. The aim of this work is to present real-time hardware architecture able to perform all the spike-sorting tasks on chip while satisfying the aforementioned stringent requirements related to this type of application. The proposed solution has been coded in VHDL language and simulated in the Cadence Xcelium tool to verify the functional behavior of the digital processing chain. Then, a synthesis and place and route flow has been carried out to implement the proposed architecture in both a 130 nm and a FD-SOI 28 nm CMOS process, with a 200 MHz clock frequency target. Post-layout simulations in the Cadence Xcelium tool confirmed the proper operation up to a 200 MHz clock frequency. The area occupation and power consumption of the proposed detection and clustering module are 0.2659 mm2/ch, 7.16 μW/ch, 0.0168 mm2/ch, and 0.47 μW/ch for the 130 nm and 28 nm implementation, respectively. This research proposes a magnetic field sensor with spatial orientation ability. Through the assistance of a magnetic flux concentrator, out-of-plane magnetic flux can be concentrated and guided into the planar magnetic cores of a fluxgate sensor. A printed circuit board is used to construct the basic planar structure, on which the proposed three-dimensional magnetic flux concentrator and magnetic cores are assembled. This reduces the alignment error of the coils and improves the reliability of the sensor. Three-axis sensing is achieved by using the second harmonic signals from selected sensing coil pairs. The magnetometer exhibits a linear range to 130 μT. At an excitation frequency of 50 kHz, the measured sensitivities are 257.1, 468.8, and 258.8 V/T for the X-, Y-, and Z-axis sensing modes, respectively. This paper presents a low-power, high-gain integrator design that uses a cascode operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) with floating inverter–amplifier (FIA) assistance. Compared to a traditional cascode, the proposed integrator can achieve a gain of 80 dB, while reducing power consumption by 30%. Upon completing the analysis, the value of the FIA drive capacitor and clock scheme for the FIA-assisted OTA were obtained. To enhance the dynamic range (DR) and mitigate quantization noise, a tri-level quantizer was employed. The design of the feedback digital-to-analog converter (DAC) was simplified, as it does not use additional mismatch shaping techniques. A third-order, discrete-time delta–sigma modulator was designed and fabricated in a 0.18 μm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process.
