Utilization of marine photovoltaic energy is primarily focused on surface harvesting with limited photovoltaic cell implementations in submarine environments. Potential applications include marine wildlife telemetry devices, autonomous underwater vehicles, or remote sensing assets. In these applications, understanding the power at depth is critical, but there has yet to be a long‐term study of cell performance in a realistic marine environment that spans time, geographic location, and depth. In this paper, we present photovoltaic assessments carried out by devices mounted to adult female northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) during their spring migrations in the Pacific Ocean with deployment times between 76 and 107 days. Encompassing a large geographic area between Santa Cruz, California, and the Aleutian Islands of Alaska during their migrations, elephant seal behavior allows for repeated depth profiles each day, making them an ideal host for subsurface power assessments. This paper presents the first longitudinal study of photovoltaic cell performance in the marine environment that spans location, time, and depth. This work discusses the calibration, data time alignment, and power calculations of these oceanic deployments. Deployment results, including power results and energy predictions from the data record, are presented up to 22 m in depth. We highlight how the recorded power data of these cells compares to previously published results and how depth impacts subsurface power and energy harvesting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The levels of mercury (Hg) were examined in the leg muscle of the crab Grapsus grapsus from five sites on four islands within the Galápagos archipelago. Mercury values obtained using a Milestone DMA 80 evo direct mercury analyzer varied both within and among sites. Total mercury concentrations (mg kg−1 dry weight) ranged from the lowest at a protected location at Isabela Island (0.06 ± 0.02) to the highest at the San Cristóbal urban location (2.04 ± 0.069). Crabs from South Plaza Island also had surprisingly high levels of mercury with a mean of 1.2 ± 0.6. Values from urban sites at Isabela Island and Academy Bay, Santa Cruz, had intermediate values. When converted to wet weight, crabs from both San Cristóbal and South Plaza were within or above the levels (0.3–0.5 mg kg−1 wet weight set by various government agencies) considered potentially harmful to human health if ingested. A lesser number of both oysters and barnacles were also analyzed for mercury at South Plaza and Academy Bay, and while the values were lower compared to the crabs, they followed the same pattern of elevated levels at South Plaza compared to Academy Bay. Scalesia pendunculata Hook.f. is the dominant tree in several highlands' areas of the Galapagos Archipelago, yet in inhabited islands the conversion to agricultural fields has reduced its cover. The transition to agroforestry systems including the species shows promising scenarios to restore its cover and to provide ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration. Here, based on field gathered data, we model the potential contribution of S. pedunculata stands in the carbon sequestration of Galapagos. Between 2013–2021, 426 S. pedunculata seedlings were planted in the highlands of Santa Cruz and Floreana islands using several restoration technologies, and their height and survival were monitored every three months. A sub-sample of 276 trees alive since 2020 was used to estimate the DBH based on plant age and height. Based on scientific literature, biomass and carbon content were estimated across time. The final modelling included the density of plants in the restoration sites, estimated DBH, potential survival by restoration treatment, and a Brownian noise to add stochastic events. Overall, survival of S. pedunculata was high in control and slightly increased by most restoration treatments. A stand of 530 trees/ha was projected to sequester ~21 Mg C/ha in 10 years. If this is replicated over all Galapagos coffee production would contribute to the reduction of -1.062% of the Galapagos carbon footprint for the same period. The study was undertaken to assess the province of Marinduque's fire incidence from 2018 to 2022 and determine its firefighting capability, which includes fire prevention programs, tools, PPEs and Equipment (fire trucks), manpower, skills and trainings acquired, facilities and infrastructure and financial resources management. Present the level of performance in implementing fire prevention programs, and to know if there is a significant relationship of firefighting capabilities and performance of BFP-Marinduque Personnel. To identify the gaps in the implementation of fire prevention programs as well as the problems encountered and strategies employed by the personnel and management of the Bureau of Fire Protection in the province of Marinduque from 2018 to 2022. Further, to propose a framework of service delivery for fire prevention based from the results of this study that could be helpful in the future researches. The descriptive research method was used in this study. The documentation records obtained from the Bureau of Fire Protection Provincial Office in Tampus, Boac, Marinduque, and the province's six Municipal Fire Stations, as well as the survey questionnaires administered in each station and the provincial office, are the sources of data. The information was tallied, analyzed and interpreted. The statistical tools that were utilized to treat and interpret the data required for the study are frequency count, percentage calculations, ranking, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Fire Incidence in the Province of Marinduque reveals a total of 58 fire events. The municipalities of Boac, Buenavista, Gasan, Santa Cruz, and Torrijos have similar fire causes, except for Mogpog, which has open flames or unsupervised cooking as the leading cause of fires in this area. The capability of the Marinduque Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in terms of tools, personal protective equipment, and the number of firetrucks indicates a varied landscape of readiness throughout towns, with an overall capability of 74.49% and a verbal description of "adequate." In terms of manpower, the total capability of the BFP in Marinduque is assessed as "adequate" at 62.06%. In terms of firefighting capability in terms of acquired skills and trainings. BFP staff possess a broad range of skills that can be categorized into three: hard skills, professional skills, and specialized skills. The firefighting capability in terms of adequacy and sufficiency of facilities and infrastructures yields a total mean for adequacy of 3.25, implying that these facilities, on average, provide what is necessary but with room for improvement. The total sufficiency mean is 3.06. BFP Marinduque has maintained a consistent budget utilization rate of 100% for the last five fiscal years. The mean performance ratings for various Fire Prevention activities range from 4.08 to 4.69, indicating that the BFP's performance is either "Very Satisfactory" or "Outstanding". The human population of Galapagos has rapidly increased in the last decades accelerating the anthropogenic pressures on the archipelago's natural resources. The growing human footprint, including inadequate management of garbage, may lead to conservation conflicts. Here, we assessed the ingestion of debris by Western Santa Cruz giant tortoises (Chelonoidis porteri) within human-modified and protected areas. Additionally, we characterized environmental debris and quantified tortoise abundance together with tortoise fecal samples. We processed a total of 6629 fecal samples along a gradient of anthropogenic disturbance based on human debris presence. We found 590 pieces of debris in samples within human-modified areas (mean of 3.97 items/kg of feces) and only two pieces in the protected area (mean of 0.08 items/kg of feces). Plastic waste was the predominant category in feces within the anthropic area (86.3%; n = 511), followed by cloth, metal, paper, synthetic rubber, construction materials, and glass. On average, the proportion of plastic was higher in feces (84%) than it was in environmental debris (67%), denoting that plastics are more readily ingested than other types of debris. We also found that green, white, and light blue plastics were consumed more often than their prevalence in the environment, suggesting color discrimination. Tortoise abundance was higher in the protected area when compared to the human-modified area; however, recapture rates were higher in anthropized landscapes which increases tortoise exposure to plastics and other human associated threats. Our results indicate that plastics are frequently consumed by tortoises in the polluted anthropic areas of western Santa Cruz, but scarce in protected areas. More research is needed to understand the negative impacts associated with plastics for Galapagos terrestrial species. We encourage local stakeholders to implement current policies limiting expansion of urban areas, plastic use, and improving waste management systems to minimize threats to human and animal health. Subnational governments are generally funded by fiscal rents, that is, transfers of centrally levied taxes. Existing literature concurs that fiscal federalism breeds rentierism and, consequently, hinders subnational democracy. However, in Argentina, fiscal rents do not always lead to low provincial contestation. Building on research on oil-based rentierism and fiscal federalism, we argue that this variation results from the provincial fiscal institutions that distribute central-government transfers from the province to municipalities. Specifically, we claim that as provincial fiscal institutions decentralize fiscal rents from the province to municipalities, they empower mayors to challenge governors. Conversely, as these institutions centralize rents at the province, they empower governors and weaken opposition from below. Using panel data and a comparison between Tierra del Fuego and Santa Cruz—the provinces that receive the largest fiscal transfers—we show that the effect of fiscal rents on incumbent party advantage decreases and eventually disappears as institutions become province-decentralizing. Large, mapped forest research plots are important sources of data to understand spatial and temporal changes in forest communities in the context of global change. Here, we describe the data from the first three censuses of the 16-ha UC Santa Cruz Forest Ecology Research Plot, located in the Mediterranean-climate forest on the central coast of California, USA. The forest includes both mixed-evergreen forest and redwood-dominated forest and is recovering from significant logging disturbances in the early 20th century. Each woody stem with a diameter ≥ 1 cm at 1.3 m was mapped, tagged, identified, and measured, with censuses performed at ~5-year intervals. The first census included just 6 ha (previously described), and the area was then expanded to 16 ha in the second census. We describe the temporal dynamics of the forest in the original 6 ha, as well as the structure and temporal dynamics of the full 16 ha. The community includes 34 woody species, including 4 gymnosperm and 9 angiosperm tree species, 18 species of shrubs, and 3 species of lianas. The community includes eight non-native species, representing less than 0.5% of the stems. More than half the species show greater rates of mortality than recruitments, reflective of a dynamic forest community. Over a decade, the number of living woody stems has declined, but the basal area has increased, reflecting a self-thinning process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
