This paper identifies and analyzes the microstructure of a carburized layer by using a deep convolutional neural network, selecting different carburizing processes to conduct surface treatment on 23CrNi3Mo steel, collecting many metallographic pictures of the carburized layer based on laser confocal microscopy, and building a microstructure dataset (MCLD) database for training and testing. Five algorithms—a full convolutional network (FCN), U-Net, DeepLabv3+, pyramid scene parsing network (PSPNet), and image cascade network (ICNet)—are used to segment the self-built microstructural dataset (MCLD). By comparing the five deep learning algorithms, a neural network model suitable for the MCLD database is identified and optimized. The research results achieve recognition, segmentation, and statistic verification of metallographic microstructure images through a deep convolutional neural network. This approach can replace the high cost and complicated process of experimental testing of retained austenite and martensite. This new method is provided to identify and calculate the content of residual austenite and martensite in the carburized layer of low-carbon steel, which lays a theoretical foundation for optimizing the carburizing process. This paper utilizes the plasma arc as the heat source to successfully fabricate well-formed thin-walled parts using combined cable wire duplex stainless steel 2209. Microstructure of parts exhibited the favorable two-phase ratio and the absence of σ-phase. It was found that appropriate heat input (1.68 kJ/cm) and cooling rate (5 °C/s) can effectively avoid the precipitation of σ-phase. Furthermore, the properties of the as-deposited samples were comparable to those of the samples heat-treated at 1300 °C, proving that no subsequent heat treatment was required for 2209 stainless steel fabricated by plasma arc additive manufacture. The samples showed excellent properties, in which the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were improved by about 7% and 24% compared with GB/T4237-2015. The impact toughness meets the requirements of EN10028-7-2016, which is about 35% higher than that of the cold metal transfer samples, and the corrosion resistance is comparable to that of hot rolled 2205. Laser cladding uses a high-energy laser beam as a heat source to rapidly melt and solidify the cladding material onto the substrate to form a high-performance coating. This technology provides an efficient and economical method to repair and remanufacture precision equipment such as engines and spacecraft. However, the inherent non-equilibrium solidification properties of laser cladding often lead to problems such as coating anisotropy, high porosity, and elemental segregation. Optimizing process parameters and heat treatment do not always eliminate these defects. Therefore, it is necessary to seek a more appropriate solution. Introducing laser remelting on the surface or between the layers of the coating to cause it to remelt and redistribute can refine the grain size, reduce defects, and improve the uniformity of the composition, thus enhancing the performance of the coating. This paper reviews and summarizes the application and development status of laser remelting technology in laser cladding and discusses it in terms of surface quality, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the coating. It also identifies the potential of external field-assisted laser remelting technology in further optimizing coating performance. The creep behavior of an expansive clay under undrained conditions is investigated considering the effects of freeze-thaw-drying-wetting (FTDW) cycles. Compacted specimens were subjected to 1, 4, and 10 FTDW treatments. Macroscopic changes were recorded and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests were conducted to reveal the expansive clay's structure evolution during the FTDW treatments. The undrained shear strength was first determined by the consolidated undrained shear tests for as-compacted specimens. Subsequently, saturated undrained creep tests under low confining pressure were performed at various deviator stress levels (D) to study the axial strain development with time for specimens subjected to different FTDW cycles (NFTDW). Experimental results show that 1) the macropores increase with the newly emerged peak at a diameter between 10 µm to 20 µm and micropores decrease after FTDW cycles; 2) the axial instantaneous strain (εai), creep strain (εac), and total strain (εat) increase with FTDW cycles. The εai-D-NFTDW and εat-D-NFTDW relationships of the specimens are distributed on a unique surface under a certain confining pressure level; 3) the axial strain rate decreases dramatically within the first 2,000 min and then remains nearly constant. This paper presents an experimental study of nanomaterials' influence on improving the mechanical behaviour and microstructure of cemented soils. The strength characteristics were obtained through uniaxial compressive strength test. The influences of nanomaterials on the pore size distribution and micromorphology of cemented soil were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength of the cemented soil increases with the nano-SiO2 content. When the content is 4%, the strength of the cemented soil increases by about 40%. Improvement with nano-Fe3O4 shows different trends. The strength of the cemented soil increases with the nano-Fe3O4 content, reaching a peak at 3% of the nano content, and then decreases with the increase in the content. The transverse relaxation time spectrum curve of the cemented soil is trimodal, and the main peak covers a dominant area. Adding nanomaterials improves the pore distribution, transforms large pores into small pores, and greatly reduces the pores of the cemented soil. The porosity of the cemented soil decreases exponentially with the increase of nano-SiO2 content. On the contrary, with the increase of nano-Fe3O4 content, the porosity of the cemented soil specimen first decreases and then increases, the porosity reaches the minimum at 3% content. Nano-SiO2 and nano-Fe3O4 can effectively fill the internal pores of the cemented soil and accelerate the hydration process. In addition, nano-SiO2 participates in the hydration reaction of cement and has a good promoting effect on the mechanical properties of cemented soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anodizing is a well-documented surface treatment that is inserted in a complex protection system against corrosion applied to Al alloys. In the scientific literature, there are many works about this topic, which are concentrated on: (1) anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) growth mechanism; (2) anodized alloys corrosion behavior, or (3) the influence of anodizing parameters on the following steps of corrosion protection of the anodized layer. However, the effect of the microstructure on the AAO formation is not yet well established. This paper aims to review the effect of the microstructure of Al and its alloys on the anodizing process by a historical, statistical, and electrochemical approach, considering the advantages in understanding the influence of intermetallics in this process. Besides, this review brings a comparison among the number of publications and the types of alloys studied by statistical analyses. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of anodizing in the aeronautical industry, in which a great number of studied alloys are applied, mainly the 2XXX (Al-Cu) and 7XXX (Al-Zn) series alloys. Purpose: Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is one of the most researched and fastest-growing AM technique because of its capability to produce larger components with medium complexity. In recent times, the use of WAAM process has been increased because of its ability to produce complex components economically when compared with other AM techniques. The purpose of this study is to investigate the capabilities of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), which has emerged as a recognized method for fabricating larger components with complex geometries. Design/methodology/approach: This paper provides a review of process parameters for optimizing and analyzing mechanical properties, hardness, microstructure and corrosion behavior achieved through various WAAM-based techniques. Findings: Limited analysis exists regarding the mechanical properties of various orientations of Inconel 625 alloy. Moreover, there is a lack of studies concerning the corrosion behavior of Inconel 625 alloy fabricated using WAAM. Originality/value: The review identifies that the formation of intermetallic phases reduces the desirability of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of WAAM-fabricated Inconel 625 alloy. Cemented carbide is often used as the pick-tip material for conical picks. The pick-tip often experiences premature failure due to insufficient toughness. This paper aims to improve the impact toughness of cemented carbide through electromagnetic coupled cryogenic treatment. A theoretical model between process parameters and impact toughness is established. The optimal parameters are determined as follows: a cryogenic temperature of −190 °C, cryogenic time of 24 h, magnetization intensity of 1.5 T, and magnetization time of 15 s. The treatment improves the impact toughness by 11.39% compared with the heat treatment. Microstructure analysis indicates a notable increase in dislocations and grain refinement within the Co phase, attributing to the enhanced toughness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To enhance proton exchange membrane fuel cells, an ultra-thin cathode catalytic layer based on PtPdCu nanowires is analyzed. The purpose is to optimize fuel cell performance by analyzing key parameters of the catalytic layer in detail, such as thickness and porosity. Numerical simulation methods are used to simulate the structural parameters and operating conditions of the catalytic layer using COMSOL Multi-physics software. The paper focuses on analyzing the changes in the transport resistance of electrons, protons, and oxygen within the catalytic layer, as well as the measurement method of the porosity of the catalytic layer. The results demonstrated that when the catalytic layer thickness reached 450 nm, the power density of proton exchange membrane fuel cells reached its peak, which was 801 and 996 mW/cm2, respectively. In catalytic layers with a thickness of less than 1 µm, the transfer efficiency of oxygen and electrons was higher. When the thickness exceeds 5 µm, oxygen transmission was hindered, and the proton transfer path becomes longer. The average porosity was 44.02%, indicating a high structural consistency of the catalytic layer. In terms of redox reaction performance, the area specific activity of PtPdCuNWs was four times that of commercial Pt/C. This study emphasizes the importance of the ultra-thin cathode catalytic layer in optimizing the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and provides insights into improving catalytic efficiency and overall fuel cell performance through micro-structure design. The traditional microstructure detecting methods such as metallography and electron backscatter diffraction are destructive to the sample and time-consuming and they cannot meet the needs of rapid online inspection. In this paper, a random forest regression microstructure characterization method based on a laser ultrasound technique is investigated for evaluating the microstructure of a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). Based on the high correlation between the longitudinal wave velocity of ultrasonic waves, the average grain size of the primary α phase, and the volume fraction of the transformed β matrix of the titanium alloy, and with the longitudinal wave velocity as the input feature and the average grain size of the primary α phase and the volume fraction of the transformed β matrix as the output features, prediction models for the average grain size of the primary α phase and the volume fraction of the transformed β matrix were developed based on a random forest regression. The results show that the mean values of the mean relative errors of the predicted mean grain size of the native α phase and the volume fraction of the transformed β matrix for the six samples in the two prediction models were 11.55% and 10.19%, respectively, and the RMSE and MAE obtained from both prediction models were relatively small, which indicates that the two established random forest regression models have a high prediction accuracy. The binary nitride coatings corresponding to Ti, Zr, Nb, Mo, and Ta have good thermal stability, hardening wear resistance, and high-temperature oxidation resistance. Therefore, the high-entropy alloy nitride coating composed of these five elements is expected to show excellent mechanical properties, and it is suitable for extending tool life in dry-cutting environments. In this paper, (TiZrNbMoTa)Nx high-entropy nitride films were synthesized using a multitarget nonequilibrium magnetron sputtering technique. The paper aimed at investigating the effects of different nitrogen flow rates (FN) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the films. The results show that, with the increase in FN, the deposition rate gradually decreased, the films exhibited a face-centered cubic structure, and the grain gradually changed from coarse columnar crystals to ultrafine grain structures. The hardness, elastic modulus, and binding force all showed a tendency to increase and then decreased with increasing FN. The hardness and elastic modulus reached their maximum values of 34.39 and 400.97 GPa, respectively, at an FN of 60 SCCM, and the formation of covalent bonds and grain refinement promoted the increase in hardness. As a subserie of the dental ceramic material family, glass–ceramics are favored for their excellent aesthetic properties. The feasibility of current commercially available dental glass–ceramics applications has been proven, while the assurance and development of more functional properties for them are still being explored. Effective utilization of various modification mechanisms by adjusting the chemical composition and microstructure is essential to improve the mechanical properties, aesthetic properties, and other properties such as biocompatibility of dental restorative materials. Among them, the mechanical properties of restorations should take into account the mechanical properties of glass ceramics and the final restoration (restoration and tooth set) in the mechanical behavior. This paper provides an overview of the chemical composition design, classification of microstructure, property requirements, and strengthening methods applied to dental glass–ceramics, including ion exchange, chain effects, heat treatment modulation, and strengthening mechanisms. In addition, research on traditional hot pressing, subtractive manufacturing, and newly developed additive manufacturing in glass–ceramics are systematically presented. Cast iron is widely used in the manufacturing industry due to its high strength and wear resistance properties. However, cast iron’s brittle nature results in frequent failure of cracks during formation or use. Among the repair methods that can be used are thermal spray and the welding process. Even though both welding and thermal spray have been implemented for various metal repairs processes, however very limited technical reports as well as scientific papers are found for this topic. Therefore, the optimum condition of metal repair by both processes is still needed to be explored. The present works focus on the comparison between thermal spray and welding method for cast iron repairs purposes. In the experiment of thermal spray process focus has been given in optimizing spraying distance on microstructure and hardness properties. On the other hand, in the welding experimental works focus has been given on the influence of groove design on microstructure and hardness. Each research variable is carried out to obtain optimal crack repair results. It was observed that thermal spray process produces less Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) area compared to the welding process therefore having less critical area. The highest hardness value of thermal spray method is 101.33 shown by 30 cm spraying distance. Meanwhile, the highest hardness value of HAZ area of welding method is 600 HV shown by specimen A. It was obtained that from the present experimental works, thermal spray process produces better results than welding process. To evaluate the effect of Microbial Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) on the enhancement of early resistance to sulfate attack of cementitious materials. In this paper, firstly, the effect of Bacillus subtilis (BM) on the carbonation depth as well as the carbonation rate of standard as well as carbonation-conditioned cementitious sand specimens was investigated. Secondly, the compressive strength and volumetric deformation of the specimens at different ages of immersion in sulfate solution were investigated. Finally, the changes of hydration products before and after the addition of BM were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and the microscopic pore structure of the specimens after erosion was analyzed by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), which revealed the mechanism of the improvement of BM on the resistance to sulfate erosion of the cementitious materials. The results showed that the initial compressive strength of BM carbonised curing specimens, ordinary carbonised curing specimens and BM standard curing specimens were increased by 42.0%, 34.0% and 4.0%, respectively, compared with the ordinary standard curing specimens, respectively, compared with the control group, and the loss of the final compressive strength was reduced by 37.4%, 25.4%, and 14.5%, and the expansion rate was reduced by 31.3%, 22.0%, after sulfate erosion for 6 months, 5.2%, and porosity decreased by 24.2%, 13.6%, and 9.9%. Microbial mineralization accelerated the reaction between Ca2+ in the pore solution and atmospheric CO2, and the calcite formed filled the pores to make the structure denser, increasing the initial compressive strength of the specimens and reducing the loss of properties when exposed to sulfate solution. MCrAlY (M = Ni and/or Co) metallic coatings are essential for the protection of hot-end components against thermal and corrosion damage. Increasing the Al content is considered a feasible solution to improve the high-temperature performance of MCrAlY coatings. In this paper, the effects of high Al contents (12–20 wt.%) on the phase constituents and cast microstructures in MCrAlY alloys were studied by high-energy X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques combined with phase equilibria calculations. High Al content improved the stability of β, σ, and α phases. Meanwhile, an evolution of the cast microstructure morphology from a dendrite structure to an equiaxed grain structure was observed. The thermal properties were analyzed, which were closely related to the phase constituents and solid-to-solid phase transitions at evaluated temperatures. The application of advanced high-strength steel grades (AHSS) in different kinds of industry is connected to more than their attractive mechanical properties. The present paper focuses on improving the welding Docol 1300M steel to reach an acceptable microstructure and mechanical parameters. It was decided to manufacture joints with different welding parameters using different filler materials. The electrode wires were varied to increase the carbon content in the weld, and nitrogen was added to the argon shielding mixture to obtain non-metallic inclusions that strengthen the fusion zone. Specimens of joints welded with the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process for non-destructive and destructive tests were examined. Tensile and bending tests as well as microscopic inspections using a light (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were also conducted. The results from the fatigue test confirmed the validity of the proposed welding process for the Docol 1300M joint. The collected data enabled the following conclusion: The article's novelty is represented by the use of shielding gas mixtures containing argon and nitrogen in the GMAW welding process of AHSS steel to create titanium non-metallic inclusions, which will translate into better performance properties of the entire joint. In industrial production, the deformation inhomogeneity after metal forging affects the mechanical properties of various parts of the forgings. The question of whether the organization and mechanical properties of β-titanium alloy can be improved by controlling the amount of forging deformation needs to be answered. Therefore, in this paper, a new sub-stable β-Ti alloy TB 18 (Ti-5.3Cr-4.9Mo4.9V-4.3Al-0.9Nb-0.3Fe) was subjected to three different levels of deformation, as well as solid solution-aging treatments, and the variation rules of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. During the solid solution process, the texture evolution pattern of the TB18 alloy at low deformation (20–40%) is mainly rotational cubic texture deviated into α-fiber texture; at high deformation (60%), the main components of the deformed texture are α-fiber texture with a specific orientation of (114)<1 13 - 3>. After subsequent static recrystallization, the α-fiber texture is deviated to an α*-fiber texture, while the specific orientation (114)<1 13 - 3> can still be inherited as a major component of the recrystallized texture. The plasticity of the alloy in the normal direction (ND) after the solid solution is influenced by the existence of the <110>//ND texture, and the plasticity of the alloy in the ND direction after aging is determined by a combination of the volume fraction of the <110>//ND texture in the matrix phase and the volume fraction of [11 2 - 0]α//ND in the α phase. The results show that it is feasible to change the characteristics of the recrystallization texture of TB18 by controlling the deformation level of hot forging, thus realizing the modulation of the mechanical properties. In this paper, we study the influence of densified microsilica and colloidal nanosilica admixtures on the mechanical strength and the microstructural characteristics of special mortars used for immobilizing radioactive concrete waste. The experimental program focused on the replacement of cement with micro- and/or nanosilica, in different proportions, in the basic composition of a mortar made with recycled aggregates. The technical criteria imposed for such cementitious systems, used for the encapsulation of low-level radioactive waste, imply high fluidity, increased mechanical strength and lack of segregation and of bleeding. We aimed to increase the structural compactness of the mortars by adding micro- and nanosilica, all the while maintaining the technical criteria imposed, to obtain a cement matrix with high durability and increased capacity for immobilizing radionuclides. The samples from all the compositions obtained were analyzed from the point of view of mechanical strength. Also, micro- and nanosilica as well as samples of the optimal mortar compositions were analyzed physically and microstructurally. Experimental data showed that the mortar samples present maximum compressive strength for a content between 6 and 7.5% wt. of microsilica, respectively, for a content of 2.25% wt. nanosilica. The obtained results suggest a synergistic effect of micro- and nanosilica when they are used simultaneously in cementitious compositions. Thus, among the analyzed compositional variants, the mortar composition with 3% wt. microsilica and 2.25% wt. nanosilica showed the best performance, with an increase in compressive strength of 23.5% compared to the control sample (without micro- and nanosilica). Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images highlighted the decrease in pore diameter and the increase in structural compactness, especially for mortar samples with nanosilica content or a mixture of micro- and nanosilica. With the rapid development of electronic technology and large-scale integrated circuit devices, it is very important to develop thermal management materials with high thermal conductivity. Silicon carbide whisker-reinforced copper matrix (Cu/SiCw) composites are considered to be one of the best candidates for future electronic device radiators. However, at present, most of these materials are produced by high-temperature and high-pressure processes, which are expensive and prone to interfacial reactions. To explore the plating solution system suitable for SiCw and Cu composite electroplating, we tried two different Cu-based plating solutions, namely a Systek UVF 100 plating solution of the copper sulfate (CuSO4) system and a Through Silicon Via (TSV) plating solution of the copper methanesulfonate (Cu(CH3SO3)2) system. In this paper, Cu/SiCw composites were prepared by composite electrodeposition. The morphology of the coating under two different plating liquid systems was compared, and the mechanism of formation of the different morphologies was analyzed. The results show that when the concentration of SiCw in the bath is 1.2 g/L, the surface of the Cu/SiCw composite coating prepared by the CuSO4 bath has more whiskers with irregular distribution and the coating is very smooth, but there are pores at the junction of the whiskers and Cu. There are a large number of irregularly distributed whiskers on the surface of the Cu/SiCw composite coating prepared with the copper methanesulfonate (Cu(CH3SO3)2) system. The surface of the composite is flat, and Cu grows along the whisker structure. The whisker and Cu form a good combination, and there is no pore in the cross-section of the coating. The observation at the cross-section also reveals some characteristics of the toughening mechanism of SiCw, including crack deflection, bridging and whisker pull-out. The existence of these mechanisms indicates that SiCw plays a toughening role in the composites. A suitable plating solution system was selected for the preparation of high-performance Cu/SiCw thermal management materials with the composite electrodeposition process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging provides invaluable insights into in-vivo neurological pathways. However, accurate and robust characterization of white matter fibers microstructure remains challenging. Widely used spherical deconvolution algorithms retrieve the fiber Orientation Distribution Function (ODF) by using an estimation of a response function, i.e., the signal arising from individual fascicles within a voxel. In this paper, an algorithm of blind spherical deconvolution is proposed, which only assumes the axial symmetry of the response function instead of its exact knowledge. This algorithm provides a method for estimating the peaks of the ODF in a voxel without any explicit response function, as well as amethod for estimating signals associated with the peaks of the ODF, regardless of how those peaks were obtained. The two stages of the algorithmare tested onMonte Carlo simulations, as well as compared to state-of-the-art methods on real in-vivo data for the orientation retrieval task. Although the proposed algorithm was shown to attain lower angular errors than the state-of-the-art constrained spherical deconvolution algorithm on synthetic data, it was outperformed by state-of-the-art spherical deconvolution algorithms on in-vivo data. In conjunction with state-of-the art methods for axon bundles direction estimation, the proposed method showed its potential for the derivation of per-voxel per-direction metrics on synthetic as well as in-vivo data. The difference in microstructure leads to the diversity of shale mechanical properties and bedding fractures distribution patterns. In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of Longmaxi marine shale and Qingshankou continental shale were studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) with mineral analysis system, and nanoindentation. Additionally, the typical bedding layers area was properly stratified using Focused Ion Beam (FIB), and the effects of microstructure and mechanical properties on the distribution patterns of bedding fractures were analyzed. The results show that the Longmaxi marine shale sample contains more clay mineral grains, while the Qingshankou continental shale sample contains more hard brittle mineral grains such as feldspar. For Longmaxi marine shale sample, hard brittle minerals with grain sizes larger than 20 mm is 18.24% and those with grain sizes smaller than 20 mm is 16.22%. For Qingshankou continental shale sample, hard brittle minerals with grain sizes larger than 20 mm is 40.7% and those with grain sizes smaller than 20 mm is 11.82%. In comparison to the Qingshankou continental shale sample, the Longmaxi marine shale sample has a lower modulus, hardness, and heterogeneity. Laminated shales are formed by alternating coarse-grained and fine-grained layers during deposition. The average single-layer thickness of Longmaxi marine shale sample is greater than Qingshankou continental shale sample. The two types of shale have similar bedding fractures distribution patterns and fractures tend to occur in the transition zone from coarse-grained to fine-grained deposition. The orientation of the fracture is usually parallel to the bedding plane and detour occurs in the presence of hard brittle grains. The fracture distribution density of the Longmaxi marine shale sample is lower than that of the Qingshankou continental shale sample due to the strong heterogeneity of the Qingshankou continental shale. For evaluating the resistance performance of cement-stabilized soils in cold regions, the variation of the strength of the cemented sand–gravel (CSG) mixture concerning the hydration process should be explored. This paper aims to study the effect of freeze–thaw (F–T) cycles on the strength and microstructure of a CSG mixture with 10% cement that is subjected to 12 cycles of freezing at a temperature of −23°C for 24 h and then melted at room temperature of 24°C for the next 24 h. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), and weight volume loss of the samples were measured after individual F–T cycles. Furthermore, the change in the microstructure of the CSG mixture in various F–T cycles was explored. The results showed a considerable reduction in the UCS up to Cycle 3, then a slight increase for Cycles 3–6, and finally a gradual decrease for further cycles. However, the CBR and weight loss slightly fluctuated up to Cycle 6, and then gradually decreased for subsequent cycles. The majority of compounds of hydrated cement were damaged in the first three cycles. In the following cycles, between Cycles 3 and 6, the portlandite compound was dissolved and recrystallized within the microvoids. Depending on the environmental conditions, carbonation may be generated from the hydrated cement fraction, which fills the microvoids and improves the strength and structure of the mixture. During further cycles after the sixth cycle, the mechanical action of the ice lenses coupled with the disintegration of the hydrate compounds imposed many new microvoids and cracks with considerable length and width, which intensified the strength reduction of the moisture and weakened the adhesion between grains. Since cement is widely used in pavement and dam engineering for stabilizing soils, the durability of cemented soils is of prime concern. This study may help improve the durability and resistance of cemented soils in cold climates. The F–T action not only influences the macrostructure of cement-stabilized soils by imposing a wide crack and ice lens but also induces a considerable change in the complexes existing in the hydrated cement paste of the mixture. Three patterns govern the change of the mixture microstructure in various F–T cycles that correspond to the observed trend in strength. The mentioned trend for the microstructure change and, consequently, the strength variation of the CSG mixture are associated with many factors such as pH, cement content, CO2 content, moisture content within the mixture, and relative humidity within the environment. In this paper, Al-Mg-Si alloys with a thickness of 4 mm are welded by using laser beam welding (LBW) and laser-MIG hybrid welding, respectively, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the two joints are investigated. The results show that the fusion zone (FZ) of the two joints is composed of columnar crystal and equiaxed dendrite grain, and its main constituent phases are an α-Al matrix phase and a β(Mg2Si) strengthening phase. In the case of similar heat inputs, compared with those of the LBW joint, the grain size in the laser-MIG hybrid joint is smaller and there are more second phases such as the β phase in the FZ, which is related to the different action mechanisms on the base metal (BM) by the two welding processes. Under the three strengthening mechanisms of fine grain strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and solid solution strengthening, the laser-MIG hybrid welding joint shows better mechanical properties than that of the LBW joint. The maximum tensile strength of the LBW joint and the laser-MIG hybrid joint is 202 MPa and 253 MPa, respectively, and the elongation is 3.8% and 5.1%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The phase changes of gypsum were considered to be sufficiently understood for a long time. However, due to the increasing importance of gypsum recalcination (connected with the planned closure of thermal power plants resulting in a lack of FGD gypsum) and new detailed research associated with it, gaps in the current knowledge have been discovered. This paper clarifies phenomena occurring during the production of gypsum binder, anhydrite, and potentially eco-friendly calcium sulfate-based ceramics at 22–1300 °C by in-situ XRD, thermal analysis, and SEM. It was found that undesirable insoluble anhydrite II arises even in the temperature range from 40 to 90 °C despite the current state-of-the-art. New knowledge about the existence of the individual phases, microstructure (cracking of crystals; fragmentation and sintering of anhydrite AII at temperatures above 700 °C when a ceramic-like material is formed), and their external consequences (changes in moisture and heat transport properties) has been gained. Fine-grained soils containing diatom microfossils of biological origin are found worldwide. However, although these soils are acknowledged to have unique physical and mechanical properties, the exact role of diatoms in determining their compression and hydraulic behaviours remains unclear, especially when high effective stress is involved, and the underlying micromechanism is yet to be revealed. This study investigated the compression and permeability of diatomaceous soils prepared by mixing pure diatom and kaolin powders through one-dimensional constant rate of strain compression tests with a maximum vertical stress of 10 MPa. The microstructure of the soils studied was observed by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry, and the microstructural evolution during compression was traced. The results indicate that the special hollow structure of diatom particles with internal pores contributes significantly to the high void ratio, compressibility and permeability of diatomaceous soils, and increasing the diatom content improves the pore distribution non-uniformity of the diatom–kaolin mixtures. In addition, the diatom particles have high brittleness and breakage potential, leading to microstructural rearrangement during compression, especially pore-structure adjustment. Lower compressive stress deforms the inter- and intra-aggregate pores, but higher vertical stress damages the diatoms' hollow structure, which changes the compression and hydraulic parameters in a different manner from the case of conventional clay. In this paper, we report a phenomenon that equiaxed-to-columnar transition occurs during directionally solidified Ti46Al8Nb0.5B (at%) alloy. By analyzing microstructure and composition, it is found that this transition is induced by macro-segregation during directional solidification. Macro-segregation changes the solidified primary phase from ß phase to a phase, which governs the microstructural evolution. At the early stage of solidification, ß phase is the primary solidification phase, resulting in the formation of fine-equiaxed grains. As solidification proceeds, Al element enrichment and Nb weakened in liquid phase causes the primary phase transforms from ß phase to a phase. The continuous growth of primary a phase forms columnar grains in the later stage of solidification. Flexural strength test shows the average value of bending strength with 652 MPa at equiaxed-grain region is much higher that at columnar-grain region with 395 MPa. The paper presents the results of a study of the microstructure, elemental and phase compositions of the eutectic alloy (wt %): Al–12.5 Si–0.8 Mg–0.4 Mn–0.7 Fe–0.9 Ni–1.8 Cu. A comparison of the microstructure of the alloy obtained at melt cooling rates of 102 and 105 K/s is made. It is shown that an increase in the melt cooling rate leads to the refinement of structural components, a decrease in the volume fraction of primary α-Al dendrites, an increase in the volume fraction of a mixture of eutectic silicon and aluminum, and a decrease in the silicon concentration in the interdendritic space from 23 to 13 wt %. Using energy-dispersive analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis, it was revealed that inclusions of intermetallic compounds Mg5Si6, Al17(FeMn)Si2, and Al3(CuNi)2 are formed at melt cooling rates of 102 and 105 K/s. A mechanism of the formation of a layered microstructure of an eutectic alloy is proposed. Carbonated recycled powder as cementitious auxiliary material can reduce carbon emissions and realize high-quality recycling of recycled concrete. In this paper, microscopic property of recycled powder with three carbonation methods was tested through XRD and SEM, the mechanical property and microstructure of recycled powder mortar with three replacement rates were studied by ISO method and SEM, and the strengthening mechanism was analyzed. The results showed that the mechanical property of recycled powder mortar decreased with the increasing of replacement rate. It is suggested that the replacement rate of recycled powder should not exceed 20%. The strength index and activity index of carbonated recycled powder mortar were improved, in which the flexural strength was increased by 27.85% and compressive strength was increased by 20% at the maximum. Recycled powder can be quickly and completely carbonated, and the improvement effect of CH pre-soaking carbonation was the best. The activity index of carbonated recycled powder can meet the requirements of Grade II technical standard for recycled powder. Microscopic results revealed the activation mechanism of carbonated recycled powder such as surplus calcium source effect, alkaline polycondensation effect and carbonation enhancement effect. Geopolymers are green and sustainable cementitious materials that are a possible alternative to cement due to lower energy consumption and emissions. Volcanic ash can be used as raw material to prepare geopolymers by alkali activation owing to its high silica and alumina content. However, research on volcanic-ash-based geopolymers is still limited and no consensus on the optimal alkali activator and reaction mechanism has been obtained. This study investigates the effect of alkali activators with different cations on the mechanical properties and microstructure of volcanic-ash-based geopolymers. The flexural and compressive strengths were evaluated. X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and silicon-29 (29Si) magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance were used to characterise the microstructural properties. The results showed that the alkali activation effect of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on volcanic ash was superior to those of lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH), particularly at a concentration of 8 mol/l, with 28-day flexural and compressive strengths of 3.0 and 28.3 MPa, respectively. Microstructural results indicated that the sodium hydroxide-activated geopolymers formed dense, continuous, highly polymerised silica–aluminate gels. This paper provides a proper ratio scheme for activating the volcanic ash from similar deposits and promoting practical applications conducive to sustainable engineering development in the future. For many engineering applications, it is sufficient to use the concept of simple materials. However, higher gradients of the kinematic variables are taken into account to model materials with internal length scales as well as to describe localization effects using gradient theories in finite plasticity or fluid mechanics. In many approaches, length scale parameters have been introduced that are related to a specific micro structure. An alternative approach is possible, if a thermodynamically consistent framework is used for material modeling, as shown in the present contribution. However, even if sophisticated and thermodynamically consistent material models can be established, there are still not yet standard experiments to determine higher order material constants. In order to contribute to this ongoing discussion, system identification based on the method of self-adaptive filtering is proposed in this paper. To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, it has been applied to second-order gradient materials considering longitudinal vibrations. Based on thermodynamically consistent models that have been solved numerically, it has been possible to prove that system identification based on self-adaptive filtering can be used effectively for both narrow-band and broadband signals in the field of second-order gradient materials. It has also been found that the differences identified for simple materials and gradient materials allow for condition monitoring and detection of gradient effects in the material behavior. Desert areas contain abundant desert sand (DS) resources, and high-volume recycling of DS resources as components of cement-based materials can achieve high-value applications. In this paper, DS was processed into desert sand powder (DSP) and replaced with cement in high volumes (20 wt.%–60 wt.%) to produce cement pastes. The mechanical properties, heat evolution, nanomechanical characteristics, microstructure, and economic and environmental impact of cement pastes were studied. The results show that adding 20 wt.% DSP increases the compressive strength of pastes and accelerates cement hydration, compared with the control group (0 wt.% DSP). Meanwhile, incorporating an appropriate amount of DSP (20 wt.%) effectively reduces porosity, increases the proportion of harmless and less harmful pores, and reduces the proportion of more harmful pores. From the perspective of nanoscopic properties, the addition of 20 wt.% DSP increases the C-S-H volume fraction, especially enhancing the transformation of low-density C-S-H to high-density C-S-H. Notably, the sample incorporating 60 wt.% DSP exhibits the lowest values for CI coefficients (13.02 kg/MPa·m3) and Cp coefficients (2.29 USD/MPa·m3), thereby validating the application of high-volume DSP feasibility in cement-based materials. Understanding the modification mechanism of C9 petroleum resin (C9PR) on styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt properties is of significant importance. In this paper, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), storage stability, fluorescence morphology (FM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation were adopted to evaluate the rheological, chemical, and microstructure molecular motion state of C9PR and SBS composite modified asphalt at different aging states. The DSR storage results indicate that the addition of C9PR could improve the high-temperature property, storage stability, and temperature susceptibility. FM and SEM results indicate that the network microstructure was enhanced and the roughness between polymer resins and virgin asphalt was improved at the microscopic scale. The MD results indicate that the heterogeneity between C9PR and SBS modified asphalt was demonstrated, and the bonding energies were enhanced with the addition of C9PR. Moreover, the FTIR results indicate that new function groups were generated in addition to C9PR. In this paper, the possibility of retreated lithium slag (RTLS) with a high content of alkali, sulfate and fluoride as a partial replacement for fly ash (FA) to produce autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) was investigated. The influence of the RTLS dosage on the AAC performance were examined. The composition and microstructure of hydrates as well as the microstructure of the RTLS-FA-based AAC compositions were determined by XRD, FTIR, TG-DSC and SEM. The results illustrated that the incorporation of RTLS changed the crystal structure and the microstructure of the tobermorite. With increased RTLS contents, the morphology of tobermorite was changed, and the grass-like tobermorite gradually transformed into network-like tobermorite. The newly formed tobermorite improved the mechanical performance of the AAC. Compared with the RTLS10, the content of tobermorite in the RTLS30 increased by 8.6%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to its lightweight, high strength, good machinability, and low cost, aluminum alloy has been widely used in fields such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, and construction. Traditional manufacturing processes for aluminum alloys often suffer from low material utilization, complex procedures, and long manufacturing cycles. Therefore, more and more scholars are turning their attention to the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process for aluminum alloys, which has the advantages of high material utilization, good formability for complex structures, and short manufacturing cycles. However, the widespread promotion and application of LPBF aluminum alloys still face challenges. The excellent printable ability, favorable mechanical performance, and low manufacturing cost are the main factors affecting the applicability of the LPBF process for aluminum alloys. This paper reviews the research status of traditional aluminum alloy processing and LPBF aluminum alloy and makes a comparison from various aspects such as microstructures, mechanical properties, application scenarios, and manufacturing costs. At present, the LPBF manufacturing cost for aluminum alloys is 2–120 times higher than that of traditional manufacturing methods, with the discrepancy depending on the complexity of the part. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the further development and application of aluminum alloy 3D printing technology from three aspects: the development of aluminum matrix composite materials reinforced with nanoceramic particles, the development of micro-alloyed aluminum alloy powders specially designed for LPBF, and the development of new technologies and equipment to reduce the manufacturing cost of LPBF aluminum alloy. A very common hazard in Rwanda is represented by the instability of steep road cut slopes in lateritic soil. In its natural state, this material appears as a fine-grained weak and altered rock, generally in unsaturated conditions. Steep cut slopes made by this material could remain stable for a long time unless weathering weakens its mechanical behavior and heavy rainfall provokes a rapid landslide. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the microstructural, petrophysical, and geotechnical properties of lateritic soil from a road cut slope located in Kabaya (Ngororero District—Rwanda), which was recently subjected to a landslide. The mechanical properties of the material are strictly related to the geological origin and history of the deposits, their formation environment, and weathering processes. These characteristics were revealed by peculiar microstructural features (micro-texture, porosity, and degree of alteration of original mineral paragenesis). The experimental investigations included identification and classification tests, direct shear tests on saturated samples, and swelling tests. This multidisciplinary approach provided insights into the relationship between geotechnical properties and the microstructural, petrophysical, and chemical characteristics of the altered rocks. This study showed how different levels of chemical alteration operated by weathering processes, in conjunction with brittle deformation related to the tectonic history, formed in the same site two shallow rock layers with similar macro-scale features and mechanical behaviors but markedly different microstructural and chemical properties. The innovative aspect of this research suggests an integrated multidisciplinary approach to considering microstructural aspects in addition to mechanical behavior in the slope stability analyses in lateritic soil. In particular, this study demonstrates the importance of such an approach since the failure mechanism is better explained if it is based on microstructural observations instead of considering the soil shear strength parameters only. This research helped to explain the formation of the landslide failure mechanism in a specific road cut slope, which could be assumed as representative of many other similar slopes subjected to landslides in Rwanda. Laser cladding technology is an effective surface modification technique. In order to prepare coating with excellent properties on the surface of the cold heading die punch, stellite-6 cladding coating with different proportions of Y2O3 was prepared on the surface of W6Mo5Cr4V2 high-speed steel using laser cladding technology in this paper. The effects of different Y2O3 contents on the macroscopic morphology, microstructure, phase analysis, microhardness, and tribological properties of the stellite-6 coatings were investigated. It was determined that the optimal Y2O3 content for the stellite-6 powder was 2%. The results showed that the coating with 2%Y2O3 had the least number of pores and cracks and exhibited good surface flatness when joined. The microstructure became finer and denser, composed mainly of branch, cellular, equiaxed, and columnar grains. The coating consisted mainly of γ-Co, Fe-Cr, and Co3Fe7 strengthening phases, indicating good metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate. The average microhardness reached 539 HV when 2%Y2O3 was added, a 15.2% increase compared with the unmodified multilayer coating. The friction coefficient of the clad layer was 0.356, a 21.8% improvement over the unmodified stellite-6 coating. The average worn area of the cross-section was 3398.35 μm2, a reduction of approximately 27.8% compared with the unmodified stellite-6 clad layer. Soil-improvement techniques with binders are used in several geotechnical engineering applications as a sustainable solution for the reuse of waste soils. Due to their inherent complexity and their mechanical behaviour, pyroclastic soils are generally considered waste geomaterials in their natural state. Lime treatment of pyroclastic soils can be considered a viable solution for their reuse in geotechnical applications. In this paper, some peculiar features of the chemo-physical evolution and mechanical behaviour of lime-treated pyroclastic soils are evidenced through a multi-scale experimental investigation. While, for clayey soils, the fine fraction is mainly responsible for ion exchange and pozzolanic reactions induced by lime, for pyroclastic soils, pozzolanic reactions are dominant processes due to the low quantity of clay minerals along with the abundance of aluminates and silicates as the main constituents of their amorphous phase. The link between the phenomena detected at the microscale level, the mineralogical composition, and the macroscopic behaviour of two lime treated pyroclastic soils of different origin is explored through a multiscale approach. This paper aims to present the determination of the creep behaviour of a globular microstructure aluminium 7075 alloy semi-solid metal feedstock billets under a constant temperature of 250 °C. Globular microstructures are often preferred in thixoforming processes due to their unique properties and favourable mechanical and high-temperature applications. Less attention has been given to globular microstructure even though the contribution of microstructure to creep behaviour is essential. Therefore, for this test, globular microstructure aluminium 7075 alloy feedstock billets were produced by the direct thermal method. The creep tests were conducted at different stress ranges from 30 to 70 MPa, and the effect of globular microstructure was examined. The results showed that the globular microstructure had the least deformation and the lowest creep rate at a longer deformation time. The fracture surface of the samples was then analysed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructural changes that occurred during the test were investigated. SEM analysis revealed that the globular microstructure of the feedstock billet exhibits fewer voids and defects due to a uniform microstructure. The strain exponent value of globular microstructure billets was found to be at n = 4.6 in the stress range between 30 and 70 MPa at a constant temperature. This paper presents a comprehensive metallurgical analysis conducted on representative samples obtained from two batches of 17-4PH steel rods in order to investigate the underlying factors contributing to the observed differences in their mechanical properties. The samples underwent a solution annealing process followed by an aging treatment to achieve H1025 temper condition. Surprisingly, the mechanical properties of one batch namely 91/5 were found to be inferior compared to the other batch 91/7, with only the latter meeting the specified requirements. To gain a deeper understanding of these differences, a range of analytical techniques were employed. Local variation in austenite stabilizers and its corresponding effect on microstructure of batch 91/5 was found to be the root cause of lower mechanical property. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents an analysis of tests carried out on a titanium plate of a heat exchanger in which the flowing medium was hot gases with a temperature of 110 °C and a pH of less than 1. Strong hydrogenation of the titanium plate caused by the corrosion of the adjacent steel frame plate was detected. As a result of the synergy of the hydrogenation and erosion, a relative reduction in the thickness of the plate was observed locally by up to 94% in relation to the thickness of the titanium plate in the area not affected by degradation. The results of this study are not only of key engineering importance with regard to equipment design and the prevention of mechanical failures in titanium heat exchangers, but also with regard to equipment in other industries. The study of alkali-activated materials as a replacement for portland cement has been growing in recent years due to the sustainable nature of these materials. Nevertheless, ternary alkali-activated pastes using waste glass as a precursor have been insufficiently studied concerning their rheological, mechanical, and microstructural properties. In addition, there is a lack of research studying alkali-activated mixtures using basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag and glass waste as precursors. Therefore, this paper aims to study the effect of glass powder (GP) content as a precursor, the effect of the activator ratio in alkali-activated ternary pastes of BOF slag, metakaolin (MK), and GP, and the influence of the Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio on its mixtures. The activator solutions of NaOH and Na2SiO3/NaOH were used in the production of the pastes. The liquid/solid ratio was kept fixed at 0.6 and the molarity of the NaOH solution was fixed at 12 M, seeking to analyze the impact of the Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio, with adopted values of 0.75, 1.5, and 2.5. We also aimed to study the impact of the glass content in the mixture for the values of 10%, 20%, and 25%, replacing the BOF slag. The workability by the minislump test, rheology, compressive strength for 1 and 28 days, and microstructural parameters were analyzed. ANOVA was performed to determine the significance of variables in the workability and compressive strength parameters. Pastes with the highest activator ratio (Na2SiO3/NaOH=2.5) produced better compressive strength (34.74 to 36.11 MPa) and lower minislump spreads (90 to 98 mm) compared with the mixtures with Na2SiO3/NaOH=1.5 and 0.75, besides indicating a denser microstructure, linked to higher production of aluminosilicate gels. Higher GP contents generated pastes with lower mechanical performance (16.7 MPa for Na2SiO3/NaOH=0.75) and microstructural qualities, albeit with better workability (124-mm minislump spread). Compared with traditional portland cementitious material, alkali-activated material (AAM) had the advantages of low carbon emission, energy saving, excellent durability, strength, and high temperature resistance. It has been proved that the addition of a fiber or nano-particle could improve the mechanical properties of AAM. The fresh and hardened properties of nano-CaCO3 (NCC) and polypropylene fiber (PPF) reinforced AAM were studied in this paper. The hybrid effects of PPF with various volume fractions (0%, 4%, and 8%), aspect ratios (0–464.52), and NCC with various content (0%, 1%, and 2%) on the slump spread, flow rate, flexural strength, compressive strength, and ultrasonic velocity of AAM were investigated. For flowability, the mixture with 0.4% 6 mm and 0.4% 12 mm PPF was the optimal, showing a positive hybrid effect. The hybrid use of PPF and NCC significantly improved the flexural strength, but the compressive strength was not significantly improved. The hybrid effect factors for compressive strength were lower than those for flexural strength. The positive hybrid effect of strength was most obvious when the nano-CaCO3 was 1%. The threshold for fiber factors was 200. Microstructure studies showed that the bridging effect of PPFs can limit the crack development and enhance the strength of AAM. Nano-CaCO3 promoted the denseness of AAM and bond between fiber and matrix. The hybrid of PPF in different lengths and NCC could decrease fiber consumption, reducing the cost and promoting the engineering application of fiber-reinforced AAMs. The effect of hybridization of calcium carbonate nano-particles with polypropylene fibers on the fresh and hardening properties of alkali-activated materials has practical applications in the construction industry. One of its main advantages is its excellent flowability, which allows the material to be self-consolidating. This property allows it to be used effectively in areas such as post-tensioned grouting, pipe concrete, and other grouting processes, where the material flows effortlessly and fills voids efficiently. In addition, the mixing effect of the CaCO3 -nano-particles and the polypropylene fibers enhances the stability and strength of the material, which further enhances the durability and structural stability of the concrete elements. Overall, this blend has excellent flow and self-consolidation properties, making it an important choice for applications such as postgrouting and reinforced concrete construction. Titanium alloys are considered lightweight alloys and are widely applied across various industries. However, titanium alloys are prone to wearing out or galvanic corrosion. In this paper, Ti6Al4V alloy was scanned by using a continuous laser in different atmospheres to prepare composite hardening coatings. The scanning speed was varied to adjust the heat input. When the alloy was irradiated in air, a whole coating composed of TiO2 and TiN was fabricated. With the increase in scanning speed from 10 mm/s to 20 mm/s, the melting area of the surface decreased from about 1.8 mm to 0 mm, but the thickness of the coatings underwent no significant change. When prepared under compressed oxygen with a speed of 10 mm/s, a coating with a thickness of about 60 μm was prepared. In addition, the layered phenomenon occurred, and an N-enriched layer was formed at the bottom of the coating. The coatings were composed of TiO2, TiN and Ti. With the increase in the scanning speed, the thickness of the coatings decreased obviously. The testing results show that the hardness of samples Ti-A10 and Ti-O10 increased by around 160% and 140% over that of untreated samples, respectively. Due to wear and improper operation, many machine parts become useless, which is why issues of friction and wear remain constantly relevant across all industrial sectors. This paper presents the results of research on the microstructure and properties of a nanostructural composite coating containing solid lubricant. The coating was deposited from a mixture of nanostructural WC-12Co powder and nanostructural Fe3O4 powder using HVOF spraying. Despite significant differences in grain size and density of both powders, the deposited coating consisted of WC-12Co matrix containing evenly distributed Fe3O4. The XRD analysis of the coating confirmed the presence of both components and the presence of W2C, which resulted from the decarburization of WC due to the high temperature during the spraying process. Furthermore, the microstructure analysis of the coatings confirmed that they contained both nanostructural WC and Fe3O4 grains that were present in the feedstock. The coefficients of friction, microhardness, and wear of the nanostructured composite coatings were determined using an experimental binomial program. Based on the ANOVA conducted, it was determined that the most significant impact on the friction coefficient is the Fe3O4 content in the sprayed mixture, while the oxygen to propane ratio affects the microhardness. 304 stainless steel demonstrates a low thermal conductivity and work hardening characteristics, resulting in its processing, and will adhere to the tip of the tool; as well as the phenomenon of chipping, shortening the life of the tool. AlTiN coatings are representative of coatings applied to carbide tools. In this paper, AlTiN coatings with different arc current processes were deposited on carbide milling inserts using arc ion plating. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and milling properties of the coatings were investigated by using the SEM, EDS, XRD, scratch meter, friction and wear meter, and vertical machining center. The findings revealed that all coatings displayed columnar crystal growth, free from cracks and voids. With an increasing arc current, there was a notable increase in surface droplets, pits, and coating thickness. The coating deposited at a 140 A arc current showed a pronounced (200) orientation preference. The adhesion force peaked at 56.0 N with a subsequent decline, and the friction coefficient hit its lowest point of 0.429 at 140 A, contrasting with its highest value of 0.55 at 160 A. After 39 min of dry milling, the tool with a 140 A AlTiN coating exhibited minimal wear of 0.196 mm, just below the 0.2 mm failure threshold, indicating superior performance at this arc current setting. Additive manufacturing offers manufacturing flexibility for intricate components and also allows for precise control over the microstructure. This review paper explores the current state of the art in additive manufacturing techniques for Alnico permanent magnets, emphasizing the notable advantages and challenges associated with this innovative approach. Both the LPBF and L-DED processes have demonstrated promising results in fabricating Alnico with magnetic properties comparable with conventionally processed samples. The optimization of process parameters successfully reduced porosity and cracking in the LPBF processing of Alnico. The review further explored the significance of additive manufacturing process parameter optimization in managing the temperature gradient and solidification rate for a desired microstructure and enhanced magnetic properties. Other potential additive manufacturing methods suitable for the fabrication of Alnico were discussed, along with the challenges associated with the process. The insights provided also highlight how additive manufacturing holds the potential to replace post-processing techniques like solutionization, magnetic annealing, and tempering often necessary in Alnico production.
