Objectives. This study aimed to investigate 12-month and 7-day prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers of the pulp and paper industry, and assess the contribution of age, gender, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity (PA). Methods. The sample comprised 904 workers. Musculoskeletal symptoms were assessed using the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire. χ2 tests assessed the association between musculoskeletal symptoms and age/gender/BMI/PA, and multivariate logistic regression models predicted the 12-month occurrence of symptoms in the five most prevalent regions. Results. The five most affected body regions were the lower back, shoulders, neck, knees and wrists/hands. Older workers presented more symptoms in all body regions, except dorsal; female gender was associated with neck symptoms (p = 0.001); overweight was associated with a higher prevalence of lower back (p = 0.01), knee (p = 0.017) and ankle/foot (p = 0.037) symptoms; and a moderate PA level was associated with thigh/hip symptoms (p = 0.006). Age was a significant predictor in all five most affected regions; gender was a significant predictor for shoulders, neck and wrists/hands; and BMI was a significant predictor for lower back symptoms. Conclusion. The 12-month and 7-day prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers of the pulp and paper industry is higher in the lower back, shoulders, neck, knees and wrists/hands. Aim: Low body mass index (BMI) and poor oral health are prevalent among older stroke patients and associated with adverse outcomes. However, their combined impact on functional recovery after stroke remains unclear. This study investigated the synergistic effects of low BMI and poor oral health on activities of daily living (ADL) independence, swallowing function, and cognitive status in post-stroke older patients., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 708 hospitalized post-stroke patients aged ≥70 years. Low BMI was defined as <20 kg/m 2 , and poor oral health was assessed using the Revised Oral Assessment Guide (ROAG) with a score ≥13 indicating oral problems. The primary outcome was ADL independence (Functional Independence Measure-motor score >78) at discharge. Secondary outcomes included swallowing level (Food Intake Level Scale) and cognitive status (Functional Independence Measure-cognition score). Multiple regression analyses were performed to examine the associations of low BMI, poor oral health, and their combination with outcomes of interest., Results: The coexistence of low BMI and poor oral health was independently associated with lower odds of achieving ADL independence (odds ratio 0.130, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.023-0.718), worse swallowing level (B = -0.878, 95% CI -1.280 to -0.476), and poorer cognitive status (B = -1.872, 95% CI -2.960 to -0.784) at discharge, after adjusting for confounders. The combined impact was stronger than either condition alone., Conclusions: The coexistence of low BMI and poor oral health exerts a synergistic negative impact on functional recovery in older stroke inpatients. Comprehensive interventions integrating nutritional support, oral management, and rehabilitation are crucial to optimizing outcomes in this vulnerable population. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the donor-recipient BMI ratio on the survival outcomes of heart transplant recipients., Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 641 heart transplant patients who underwent surgery between September 2008 and June 2021. The BMI ratio (donor BMI divided by recipient BMI) was calculated for each patient. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression were performed to evaluate survival rates and determine the hazard ratio (HR) for mortality., Results: Significant differences were found in donor age and donor-recipient height ratio between the BMI ratio groups. The BMI ratio ≥ 1 group had a higher mean donor age (37.27 ± 10.54 years) compared to the BMI ratio < 1 group (34.72 ± 11.82 years, p = 0.008), and a slightly higher mean donor-recipient height ratio (1.02 ± 0.06 vs. 1.00 ± 0.05, p = 0.002). The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated that the survival rate in the BMI ratio ≥ 1 group was significantly lower than in the BMI ratio < 1 group. Cox multivariate analysis, adjusted for confounding factors, revealed a HR of 1.50 (95% CI: 1.08-2.09) for mortality in patients with a BMI ratio ≥ 1. No significant differences were observed in ICU stay, postoperative hospitalization days, or total mechanical ventilation time between the groups., Conclusion: A higher donor-recipient BMI ratio was associated with an increased risk of mortality in heart transplant recipients., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: Metabolic and Bariatric surgery (MBS) leads to significant weight loss and improvements in obesity-related comorbidities. However, the impact of MBS on Apolipoprotein B100 (Apo-B100) regulation is unclear. Apo-B100 is essential for the assembly and secretion of serum lipoprotein particles. Elevated levels of these factors can accelerate the development of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels. This study aimed to evaluate changes in Apo-B100 levels following MBS., Methods: 121 participants from the Iranian National Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Database (INOSD) underwent Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) (n = 43), One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) (n = 70) or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) (n = 8). Serum Apo-B100, lipid profiles, liver enzymes, and fasting glucose were measured preoperatively and six months postoperatively., Results: Apo-B100 levels significantly decreased from 94.63 ± 14.35 mg/dL preoperatively to 62.97 ± 19.97 mg/dL after six months (p < 0.01), alongside reductions in total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL, AST, and ALT (p < 0.05). Greater Apo-B100 reductions occurred in non-diabetics versus people with diabetes (p = 0.012) and strongly correlated with baseline Apo-B100 (r = 0.455, p < 0.01) and LDL levels (r = 0.413, p < 0.01). However, surgery type did not impact Apo-B100 changes in multivariate analysis (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Bariatric surgery leads to a significant reduction in Apo-B100 levels and improvements in lipid profiles and liver enzymes, indicating a positive impact on dyslipidemia and cardiovascular risk in individuals with high BMI., (© 2024. Background: Executive control and temperament have been associated with pediatric obesity. However, interactions between these constructs in relation to future weight outcomes have not been investigated., Objective: This longitudinal study examined early childhood executive control, early temperament (negative affectivity and surgency), and their interactions as predictors of adolescent BMI trajectories., Methods: At age 5.25, children (N = 229) completed executive control tasks, and parents completed the Child Behavior Questionnaire to assess temperament. BMI was calculated annually between ages 14-17., Results: Greater early negative affectivity predicted more positive BMI growth. Although early childhood executive control was not associated with BMI growth, greater negative affectivity predicted greater BMI escalation at average and below average executive control abilities., Conclusions: For children without robust executive control abilities early in development, negative affectivity may be a risk factor for accelerated adolescent BMI growth. Purpose of Review: This review explores characterizing candidates for obesity treatments including pharmacotherapy, endoscopic bariatric therapies, and metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS), focusing on established clinical parameters for diagnosing obesity beyond body mass index alone., Recent Findings: Existing literature primarily provides rates for fat mass percentage (i.e., a marker for adiposity quantity), waist circumference (i.e., a marker for adiposity distribution), and C-reactive protein levels (i.e., a marker for adiposity functionality) among obesity treatment candidates. Limited data on abnormal values and sex-based differentiation exist. The literature indicates high central-tendency measures for fat mass percentage and waist circumference, while C-reactive protein levels vary. Data on the Edmonton Obesity Staging System (i.e., a marker for adiposity-related disease severity) is predominantly available for MBS candidates. Future studies in obesity interventions should improve screening and diagnosis of obesity by incorporating sex-specific considerations and providing abnormal value rates for measurements to enhance understanding of patients' characteristics., (© 2024. Aim: Our study aims to provide an updated estimate of age- and sex-specific deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with high body mass index (BMI) from 1990 to 2019 at the global, regional and national levels, and to forecast the global burden of disease attributed to high BMI from 2020 to 2035., Methods: We used the data for the number of deaths, DALYs, age-standardized rate (per 100 000 population), percentage change and population attributable fraction from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) to examine the disease burden attributable to high BMI. We further applied an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to predict the disease burden for the period 2020-2035., Results: From 1990 to 2019, the deaths and DALYs attributable to high BMI increased by 148% and 155.86% for men, and by 111.67% and 121.78% for women, respectively. In 2019, high BMI directly accounted for 8.52% [95% uncertainty intervals (UI) 0.05, 0.12] of all-cause deaths and 5.89% (95% UI 0.04, 0.08) of global DALYs. The highest death rates were observed in men aged 65-69 and women aged 75-79. The highest DALY rates were observed in the age group of 60-64 for both sexes. In 2019, the highest age-standardized deaths and DALY rates were observed in the Central Asia region [163.15 (95% UI 107.72, 223.58) per 100 000 people] and the Oceania region [4643.33 (95% UI 2835.66, 6902.6) per 100 000 people], respectively. Fiji [319.08 (95% UI 213.77, 444.96) per 100 000 people] and Kiribati [10 000.58 (95% UI 6266.55, 14159.2) per 100 000 people] had the highest age-standardized deaths and DALY rates, respectively. In 2019, the highest age-standardized rates of high BMI-related deaths and DALYs were observed in the middle-high socio-demographic index quintile and in the middle socio-demographic index quintile. The age-standardized deaths and DALY rates attributable to high BMI are projected to increase in both sexes from 2020 to 2035. The death rates are projected to rise from 62.79 to 64.31 per 100 000 people, while the DALY rates are projected to rise from 1946 to 2099.54 per 100 000 people., Conclusions: High BMIs significantly contribute to the global disease burden. The projected rise in deaths and DALY rates attributable to high BMI by 2035 highlights the critical need to address the impact of obesity on public health. Background: Many young adults report poor diet quality. However, research evaluating whether young adult males and females differ in diet quality is limited. Additionally, although diet quality has a known inverse association with body mass index (BMI), it is unclear whether this association is observed in young adults and whether it varies by gender. The present study aimed to evaluate gender differences in diet quality in young adults, as well as the associations between diet quality and BMI., Methods: Data collected via the Healthy Eating Quiz (HEQ) in respondents aged 18-35 years between July 2019 and December 2021 were analysed, including demographics, and diet quality calculated using the Australian Recommended Food Score (ARFS). Differences in characteristics were analysed using a two-sample t-test, chi-squared and one-way analysis of covariance. Linear regressions were performed to estimate associations between diet quality and BMI. An interaction term was included in the model to test differences between genders., Results: The respondents (n = 28,969) were predominantly female (70.8%) with a mean ± SD age of 25.9 ± 5.0 years and BMI of 24.6 ± 5.2 kg/m 2 . The mean ± SD ARFS was significantly different between females and males (33.1 ± 8.6 vs. 31.4 ± 9.3 points out of 70; p < 0.001). Diet quality had a small, significant inverse association with BMI in both genders. The interaction effect between diet quality score and gender in predicting BMI was significant (p < 0.001), suggesting the impact of diet quality on BMI varies by gender, with lower diet quality more strongly associated with higher BMI in females compared to males., Conclusion: Interventions that target young adults are needed to improve diet quality and its potential contribution to BMI status. Background: Most patients undergoing the mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) technique are elderly comorbid patients. Low body mass index (BMI) < 23 kg/m 2 has been identified in other elderly populations as a risk factor, but has not been studied sufficiently in mitral TEER., Aims: We aimed to study the impact of low BMI (23 kg/m2) on the outcome after mitral TEER., Methods: Patients undergoing first-time TEER for mitral regurgitation at a single tertiary center were included, with the exclusion of patients with preprocedural hemodynamic instability or missing BMI. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality. Secondary endpoints were long-term major bleeding or admission with heart failure., Results: A total of 120 patients (mean age 76 ± 10 years, 76% men) were included in the study. Thirty-nine (31%) had low BMI. Patients with low BMI had a similar symptomatic benefit as patients with BMI ≥ 23 kg/m 2 at 1 year regarding decrease in diuretics dose and decrease in New York Heart Association (NYHA) class (p > 0.05). In a multivariable Cox regression analysis, BMI as a continuous variable (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.93 [95% confidence interval, CI: 0.87-0.99], p = 0.03) and low BMI (HR: 1.99 [95% CI: 1.12-3.52], p = 0.02) were associated with the primary outcome. Low BMI was not significantly associated with major bleeding (subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR]: 2.39 [95% CI: 0.96-5.97], p = 0.06) or admission with heart failure (SHR: 1.06 [95% CI: 0.61-1.88], p = 0.83) during follow-up with univariable competing risk regression analysis., Conclusion: Low BMI is a risk factor for mortality after mitral valve TEER, confirming the presence of an "obesity paradox" in this population and should receive attention in patient selection., (© 2024 The Author(s). Objectives: To analyze the mode of school physical activity, the relationship with obesity, and participation willingness and behavior in the relationship between modes of school physical activity and BMI in students with overweight or obesity., Design: Cross-sectional study., Sample: Data from the 2014 Physical Fitness and Health Surveillance of Chinese School Students was used, wherein physical measurements and questionnaires of 3476 middle school students were collected., Measurements: Physical measurements and questionnaires were completed. Latent profile analysis and mediated effects analysis were conducted using Mplus 8.3 and IBM SPSS 26.0 for data description and statistical analysis., Result: After latent profile analysis divided into poor (9.35%), medium (65.16%), and good (25.49%) groups of school physical activity, among junior middle school students, medium (OR = 0.428, 95% CI = 0.259-0.707, p = .001) and good (OR = 0.448, 95% CI = 0.255-0.718, p = .002) groups were positive for controlling overweight. Among students with overweight or obesity, participation willingness mediated the relationship between the mode of school physical activity and BMI, with effect coefficients of -0.120 (95% CI = -0.264 to -0.016) and -0.240 (95% CI = -0.426 to -0.099)., Conclusions: School physical activity modes have a positive effect only on preventing and controlling overweight in junior middle school students. Background: There are few prospective studies of factors that mediate the association between exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and obesity in adolescence. Our aim was to address this limitation., Methods: We used prospective data from the Growing up in Ireland cohort study, with measurements at 9, 13, and 18 years old. The exposures were 14 adverse experiences before age 9. The main outcome was body mass index (BMI) at 18 years. Mediators were daily activity, diet quality, self-image and behavioural difficulties at 13 years., Results: Among the 4561 adolescents in the final cohort, 77.2% experienced any adversity, 50.5% were female and 26.7% were overweight/obese at 18 years. BMI Z was higher at ages 9 (0.54 vs 0.43, p < 0.05, 95% CI of difference: -0.22, -0.01) and 13 years (0.50 vs 0.35, p < 0.05, 95% CI of difference: -0.25, -0.06), in those exposed to an ACE, compared to those unexposed. Structural equation models revealed that behavioural difficulties (β = 0.01; 95% CI: 0.007-0.018, p < 0.001) and self-concept (β = 0.0027; 95% CI: 0.0004-0.0050, p = 0.026) indirectly mediate the association between exposure to ACEs and BMI at 18 years., Conclusions: The association between ACEs and BMI in adolescence is mediated by behavioural difficulties and self-concept., Impact: In a previous study, we found modest associations between exposure to a range of adverse childhood experiences and weight gain at 13 years of age. The strength of the association between adverse childhood experiences and weight gain was lower at 18 years of age compared to the association observed at 13 years and was no longer significant after controlling for confounding and including possible mediators. Background: Protein leverage (PL) is the phenomenon of consuming food until absolute intake of protein approaches a 'target value', such that total energy intake (TEI) varies passively with the ratio of protein: non-protein energy (fat + carbohydrate) in the diet. The PL hypothesis (PLH) suggests that the dilution of protein in energy-dense foods, particularly those rich in carbohydrates and fats, combines with protein leverage to contribute to the global obesity epidemic. Evidence for PL has been reported in younger adults, children and adolescents. This study aimed to test for PL and the protein leverage hypothesis (PLH) in a cohort of older adults., Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of dietary intake in a cohort of 1699 community-dwelling older adults aged 67-84 years from the NuAge cohort. We computed TEI and the energy contribution (EC) from each macronutrient. The strength of leverage of macronutrients was assessed through power functions ( TEI = μ * EC L ). Body mass index (BMI) was calculated, and mixture models were fitted to predict TEI and BMI from macronutrients' ECs., Results: In this cohort of older adults, 53% of individuals had obesity and 1.5% had severe cases. The mean TEI was 7673 kJ and macronutrients' ECs were 50.4%, 33.2% and 16.4%, respectively for carbohydrates, fat, and protein. There was a strong negative association (L = -0.37; p < 0.001) between the protein EC and TEI. Each percent of energy intake from protein reduced TEI by 77 kJ on average, ceteris paribus. Background: Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of nutritional status, which is a vital pre-condition for good health. The prevalence of childhood malnutrition and the potential long-term health risks associated with obesity in Ethiopia have recently increased globally. The main objective of this study was to investigate the factors associated with the quantiles of under-five children's BMI in Ethiopia., Methods: Data on 5,323 children, aged between 0-59 months from March 21, 2019, to June 28, 2019, were obtained from the Ethiopian Mini Demographic Health Survey (EMDHS, 2019), based on the standards set by the World Health Organization. The study used a Bayesian quantile regression model to investigate the association of factors with the quantiles of under-five children's body mass index. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) with Gibbs sampling was used to estimate the country-specific marginal posterior distribution estimates of model parameters, using the Brq R package., Results: Out of a total of 5323 children included in this study, 5.09% were underweight (less than 12.92 BMI), 10.05% were overweight (BMI: 17.06 - 18.27), and 5.02% were obese (greater than or equal to 18.27 BMI) children's. The result of the Bayesian quantile regression model, including marginal posterior credible intervals (CIs), showed that for the prediction of the 0.05 quantile of BMI, the current age of children [ β = -0.007, 95% CI :(-0.01, -0.004)], the region Afar [ β = - 0.32, 95% CI: (-0.57, -0.08)] and Somalia[ β = -0.72, 95% CI: (-0.96, -0.49)] were negatively associated with body mass index while maternal age [ β = 0.01, 95% CI: (0.005, 0.02)], mothers primary education [ β = 0.19, 95% CI: (0.08, 0.29)], secondary and above [ β = 0.44, 95% CI: (0.29, 0.58)], and family follows protestant [ β = 0.22, 95% CI: (0.07, 0.37)] were positively associated with body mass index. In the prediction of the 0.95 (or 0.85?) quantile of BMI, in the upper quantile, still breastfeeding [ β = -0.25, 95% CI: (-0.41, -0.10)], being female [ β = -0.13, 95% CI: (-0.23, -0.03)] were negatively related while wealth index [ β = 0.436, 95% CI: (0.25, 0.62)] was positively associated with under-five children's BMI., Conclusions: In conclusion, the research findings indicate that the percentage of lower and higher BMI for under-five children in Ethiopia is high. Factors such as the current age of children, sex of children, maternal age, religion of the family, region and wealth index were found to have a significant impact on the BMI of under-five children both at lower and upper quantile levels. Thus, these findings highlight the need for administrators and policymakers to devise and implement strategies aimed at enhancing the normal or healthy weight status among under-five children in Ethiopia., (© 2024. Aims: This study describes the incidence of fatigue in kidney transplant recipients and analyses the relationship between physiological factors, psychological factors, situational factors and fatigue in kidney transplant recipients. Background: Fatigue, as a common symptom after kidney transplantation, is affected by many factors, but the influence of some factors on the fatigue of kidney transplant recipients is still controversial. Design: This cross‐sectional study was designed based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms. Methods: Our survey involved 307 participants attending the kidney transplant outpatient clinic of a tertiary Class A hospital (Changsha, Hunan, China). Data were collected between February and April 2021 using a structured questionnaire and electronic medical records. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS 25.0 (SPSS Inc.) Results: It was found that the incidence of fatigue in kidney transplant recipients was 53.1%. According to the binary logistic regression analysis, sleep quality, hypokalemia, anxiety, depression and education level were independent risk factors for fatigue in kidney transplant recipients. Conclusion: The incidence of fatigue in kidney transplant recipients was high and was influenced by physical, psychological and situational factors. Clinical nurses should assess fatigue levels in a timely and multidimensional manner in clinical practice and provide effective and scientific guidance about fatigue self‐coping and symptom management for kidney transplant recipients. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Fatigue is a common symptom of kidney transplant recipients and can impair postoperative recovery, reemployment, quality of life, social activities and physical and mental states, causing the body to be in a state of chronic energy consumption.Owing to the imperceptible physical injury upon kidney transplant recipients, fatigue is often underappreciated or even disregarded. What this paper adds? It was found that the rate of fatigue in kidney transplant recipients was high.The risk factors for fatigue in kidney transplant recipients based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms were analysed in three ways: physiological, psychological and situational. The results showed that sleep quality, duration after transplantation, serum potassium level, anxiety, depression, education level, financial burden and social support were associated with fatigue in kidney transplant recipients. The implications of this paper: Clinical nurses should conduct timely and multidimensional fatigue evaluations of kidney transplant recipients and pay more attention to those with a high level of fatigue.The findings can provide a scientific basis for kidney transplant specialist nurses to conduct targeted interventions and facilitate fatigue management for kidney transplant recipients. INTRODUCTION: Pilots are frequently exposed to thrombotic risk as a result of immobility from air travel. As hypoxemia is associated with secondary polycythemia, and polycythemia increases the risk of thrombosis, intermittent exposure to high-altitude hypoxic environments could escalate the risk of thrombosis in pilots. Our objectives were to find the prevalence of polycythemia in airplane pilots (primary outcome) and to assess associated risk factors of polycythemia (secondary outcome). METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data was collected from paper-based and computerized medical records of airplane pilots who applied for Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate renewal at the Institute of Aviation Medicine, Royal Thai Air Force, Bangkok, Thailand, in 2018. The data was sampled by a simple random sampling technique. RESULTS: A total of 386 paper-based records were sampled. Of those, 29 (7.5%) of the pilots met polycythemia criteria. Spearman's correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and hemoglobin (correlation coefficient = 0.127) and between BMI and hematocrit (correlation coefficient = 0.105). In multivariate logistic regression of each variable on polycythemia as defined by hemoglobin alone, piloting a non-pressurized aircraft was found to be an independent predictor of polycythemia (odds ratio = 4.3). DISCUSSION: The prevalence of polycythemia in airplane pilots was 7.5%. Operating a non-pressurized aircraft was a significant risk factor of polycythemia, and pilots with higher BMI were more likely to have increased red blood cell parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hip fractures are a common and debilitating condition posing not only a huge health care but also socioeconomic burden. Surgical management for a neck of femur fracture is typically with arthroplasty in the form of total hip arthroplasty or hip hemiarthroplasty. Serial radiographs are typically performed routinely as part of follow-up to look for complications, although their clinical utility in asymptomatic patients is yet to be validated. Our paper therefore aims to review the utility and necessity of radiographic follow-up following arthroplasty for NOF fractures. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent operative management for acute fragility neck of femur fractures in the year from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2018 at the author's institution were identified. All patients who underwent surgery, and had at least one pre and one post-operative plain film radiograph of the affected hip were included in this study. Exclusion criteria included patients who had undergone surgery for chronic fractures, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, mortality within 1 year, peri-prosthetic fractures, pathological fractures from metastases, had concomitant injuries, or had inaccessible or incomplete records. Clinical records were assessed for the number of visits, an abnormal presenting history or clinical examination, as well as changes in management of the patient. The number and type of radiographs were also assessed, and each radiograph analyzed for abnormal findings. Results: A total of 157 patients were included in our study with a mean age of 79.5 at the time of surgery, and a mean follow up of 17.3 months. Data was collected from 626 clinical visits and a total of 973 radiographs. The 3 abnormal radiographic series identified with a corresponding normal consult did not result in a change of management for the patient. A negative change in management was only observed in 1 patient with an abnormal consult and a corresponding normal radiograph. Conclusion: Post-operative complications following arthroplasty for NOF fractures are likely to result in a symptomatic presentation of the patient. Simple Summary: Much research has been conducted on the causes of childhood cancer, but many areas of uncertainty remain. We conducted a detailed search of recent studies investigating the causes of childhood cancer. Our findings, based on publications from 2014 to 2021, are summarized by topic in three separate papers: factors acting during childhood (Paper 1), factors relating to the parents and pregnancy (Paper 2), and factors relating to the environment (Paper 3). In this first paper, we summarize convincing evidence from studies that show increased childhood cancer risk associated with genetic cancer predisposition, birth defects, prior cancer, medical ionizing radiation, organ transplantation and exposure to cancer-causing viruses, and a reduced risk associated with some childhood vaccinations. Other factors discussed in this paper include the impact of the child's diet, allergies, medications, and body mass index. This review of factors associated with childhood cancer may help evidence-based efforts to reduce cancer in our pediatric populations. Purpose: To review the childhood risk factors for pediatric cancer (diagnosis before age 20). Methods: We conducted literature searches using Ovid Medline and Scopus to find primary research studies, review articles, and meta-analyses published from 2014 to 3 March 2021. Results: Strong evidence indicates that an array of genetic and epigenetic phenomena, structural birth defects, and chromosomal anomalies are associated with an increased risk of various childhood cancers. Increased risk is also associated with prior cancer, likely due to previous treatment agents and therapeutic ionizing radiation. Convincing evidence supports associations between several pediatric cancers and ionizing radiation, immunosuppression, and carcinogenic virus infection both in healthy children and in association with immune suppression following organ transplantation. Breastfeeding and a childhood diet rich in fruits and vegetables appears to reduce the risk of pediatric leukemia but the evidence is less strong. Childhood vaccination against carcinogenic viruses is associated with a lower risk of several cancers; there is less strong evidence that other childhood vaccinations more broadly may also lower risk. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is associated with increased melanoma risk, although most melanomas following childhood UV exposure occur later, in adulthood. Evidence is weak or conflicting for the role of body mass index, other childhood infections, allergies, and certain treatments, including immunomodulator medications and human growth therapy. Aim: Studies of the effects of COVID‐19, especially post‐acute COVID‐19 syndrome, on psychological health in non‐severe cases are limited. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated risk factors of psychological symptoms, and quality‐of‐life in three groups of outpatients, hospitalized and intensive care patients. Methods: A total 276 patients, previously confirmed with SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, attending the COVID‐19 follow‐up outpatient clinic from December 2020 to July 2021 were interviewed face‐to‐face. In this cross‐sectional, retrospective study, all participants were asked our self‐designed demographic and screening questions to assess their psychological symptoms and administered the WHQOOL‐BREF survey to evaluate quality of life. Results: In screening questions, major depressive disorder symptoms were detected at a rate of 20.3%, generalized anxiety disorder symptoms at a rate of 16.7%, panic attack symptoms at a rate of 10.9%, post‐traumatic stress disorder symptoms at a rate of 28.6% and obsessive‐compulsive disorder symptoms at a rate of 18.1%. The outpatient group with COVID‐19 infection had a higher risk of developing psychological symptoms and decreased quality of life. Conclusion: COVID‐19 infection was found to have a considerable psychological impact on those treated as outpatients despite the less severe course of their illness. Background: The high incidence of malnutrition in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery can lead to unplanned weight loss, sarcopenia and reduced grip strength to the extent that it can seriously affect the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients. Objective: This study investigated the effect of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) on the prevalence of grip strength, unplanned weight loss and sarcopenia in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. Methods: We systematically searched randomized controlled studies from CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Web of Science and three Chinese databases (CNKI, Wan‐Fang database, VIP database) from database creation to September 2023. The risk of bias in individual studies was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration tool, and the certainty of evidence was assessed using the five GRADE criteria. Statistical analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.3 software, and information that could not be meta‐analysed was reviewed in the form of a literature summary. Results: Eleven papers met the inclusion criteria with a combined sample size of 1070 cases, including 532 cases in the trial group and 538 cases in the control group. Four papers reported the effect of ONS on grip strength and included very low‐quality evidence supporting no effect of ONS on grip strength. Ten studies reported the effect of ONS on body weight and body mass index (BMI) and included very low‐quality evidence supporting a positive ONS on weight and BMI changes. Meta‐analysis showed a significant reduction in weight loss (12–15 weeks) and BMI loss (12–15 weeks) in patients with colorectal cancer in the ONS group. The effect of ONS on the prevalence of sarcopenia after hospital discharge was reported in two studies, and meta‐analysis showed a significant reduction in the prevalence of postoperative sarcopenia in colorectal cancer patients in the ONS group, but the quality of evidence was low. Conclusions: This study showed that the use of ONS in patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer improved patient weight loss and BMI reduction and reduced the prevalence of postoperative sarcopenia but did not improve patient grip strength. The quality of evidence for inclusion in the article was low or very low, and further studies are needed to provide better evidence. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aims: This work aims to investigate the association between obesity and risk of delayed discharge and unplanned readmission in day surgery patients. Background: Day surgeries are well received and developing rapidly. Associations between obesity and delayed discharge and unplanned readmission, which are clinically relevant outcomes in day surgeries, are complex. Design: A systematic review and meta‐analysis was conducted. Data Sources: The PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, and Wan Fang databases were comprehensively searched from inception until January 2021. Review Methods: Two independent reviewers assessed the studies and extracted data. Pooled estimates were obtained using a random‐effects model. Results: Eleven articles published between 2007 and 2020 were finally included. Obesity appeared not to increase the risk of delayed discharge. However, morbid obesity seemed to be associated with a higher risk of delayed discharge. The meta‐analysis revealed no relationship between higher body mass index (BMI) and unplanned readmission for day surgery patients. Conclusions: Obesity appeared not to increase the risk of delayed discharge except in patients with morbid obesity. Additionally, a higher BMI was not associated with increased risk of unplanned readmission after day surgery. Future studies are required to address this issue further in different types of surgery and areas. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Eating Disorders are behavioral conditions characterized by severe and persistent disturbance in eating behaviors and associated distressing thoughts and emotions. Eating Disorders have become a major health issue in our current society for both men and women. People with eating disorders, in particular those with Anorexia Nervosa, are at high risk in terms of their health and safety. Unfortunately, they have the highest mortality of any psychiatric illness. Mortality rates are over 5 times higher than the general population. Both their physical and suicidal behaviors contribute to this risk. The risk of others is less of a concern. Disturbed eating behaviors such as dietary restriction, episodes of binge eating, excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting and the use of laxatives make it difficult for a person to maintain a healthy body weight and lead to the development of physical and psychological symptoms of nutritional imbalance and starvation. The factors involved in the assessment of risk in people with eating disorders include medical risk, psychological risk, psychosocial risk and insight/capacity and motivation. OBJECTIVES This paper aims to provide a general perspective on the evolution of a patient diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa, the need to measure capacity, and to consider the use of mental health law. In this paper, we have searched the relationships and influence of anthropometric characteristics and physical fitness parameters in 100 meters sprint running in teenagers. The purpose of this paper is to prove the relationship between anthropometric characteristics and physical fitness parameters as a predictor system in the 100 meter sprint running as a criterion system. The research was carried out in 170 male subjects aged 14 years ± 6 months, in the primary schools "Bajram Shabani" and "Naim Frashëri" - Kumanovo, Rep. of North Macedonia. A total of 12 variables were used in the research, of which 7 variables were used for the assessment of anthropometric characteristics, including: body height, body mass, body mass index, chest circumference, thigh circumference, thigh fat and abdominal fatty tissue, 4 variables for evaluating physical fitness parameters, including: 10x5 Shuttle run, agility T-test, standing long jump and standing high jump, and 1 variable for evaluating speed, also: 100 meter sprint running. Based on the results obtained and the analysis carried out, we can conclude that: the variables of anthropometric characteristics and the parameters of physical fitness (as a predictor system) have a statistically significant impact on the in 100 meters running criteria variable, at the level of reliability q=.000. It's also worth noting that from the entire predictor system, the greatest individual impact on the 100 meter run criterion variable, have variables: standing long jump (MKGJV) with a negative beta coefficient value of -.330 and a reliability level of .000, T - agility test (MTT) with a positive beta coefficient value of .187 and a reliability level of .003 and 10x5 Shuttle run (10x5Sh) with a beta coefficient value of .150 and a reliability level of .032. From these results, we can conclude that adolescents of this age who have developed physical fitness parameters such as explosive strength of the lower limbs and speed with a change of direction - agility, achieve better results in 100 meters sprint running and also we recommend that the same tests be applied by athletics trainers to identify sprint running talent. Introduction: The pituitary gland affects growth and development. Its main function is in the activity of sexual/reproductive hormones and in the functioning of the glands (thyroid gland, adrenal glands and gonads). Gonadotropin hormones (gonadostimulins) are so named because they stimulate the function of the gonads - male and female sex glands (testicles and ovaries) in which sex cells - sperm and egg cells are created. Overweight is a state of metabolic disorders where excess body fat accumulates to the extent that it can negatively affect human health. Obesity as a BMI factor is related to the functioning of the thyroid gland with its hormones and the pituitary gland with gonadotropin hormones. Purpose of the study: This paper aims to present the correlation between BMI and gonadotropin hormones in reproductive and postmenopausal women. The aim of the paper will also consist in the status of gonadotropin hormones and the functional state of these hormones by comparing them with metabolic disorders such as BMI, obesity and the synthesis of follicle stimulating hormone and gonadotropin hormone. Material and method: A total of 20 patients will be included in the research, divided according to age group into two categories. The first group will include patients aged 10-40 years, the second group patients over 41 years old. Blood (serum) samples will be taken from patients for analyzing gonadotropin hormones: FSH, LH, PRL and thyroid hormones: TSH, FT4, FT3. They will be analyzed with the modern automatic fluorescent enzyme immunoassay method (Vidas-Biomerie). The BMI of the body will be measured with a metric formula where the weight of the patient (in kg) divided by the height of the patient (in m2) set to the square power will give us the measure of body index-BMI (%). SPSS - Software package version 20.0. Numerical series were analyzed using central tendency measures (average, median, minimum values, maximum values), as well as distribution measures (standard deviation);. To determine the regularity of the frequency distribution of the examined variables, the Shapiro-Wilk W Test was used;. Non-parametric tests for two independent parameters were used to test the significance and difference between some numerical parameters with irregular frequency distribution (Mann Whitney U test);. To determine statistical significance, a two-way analysis was used with a significance level (means) of p<0.05. Results: The results of the research will give a real insight into the data of gonadotropic hormones FSH, LH, PRL and thyroid hormones TSH, FT4, FT3 of the female sex in the Tetova region. The results of the research will also provide information about the correlation of BMI and gonadotropin and thyroid hormones. Conclusion: From the analyzes performed on patients of different age groups we come to the conclusion that: Gonadotropin hormonal disorders can lead to the phenomenon of metabolic diseases such as BMI. This study aims to demonstrate that demographics combined with biometrics can be used to predict obesity related chronic disease risk and produce a health risk score that outperforms body mass index (BMI)-the most commonly used biomarker for obesity. We propose training an ensemble of small neural networks to fuse demographics and biometrics inputs. The categorical outputs of the networks are then turned into a multi-dimensional risk map, which associates diverse inputs with stratified, output health risk. Our ensemble model is optimized and validated on disjoint subsets of nationally representative data (N~100,000) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). To broaden applicability of the proposed method, we consider only non-invasive inputs that can be easily measured through modern devices. Our results show that: (a) neural networks can predict individual conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) or the union of multiple (e.g., nine) health conditions; (b) Softmax model outputs can be used to stratify individual- or any-condition risk; (c) ensembles of neural networks improve generalizability; (d) multiple-input models outperform BMI (e.g., 75.1% area under the receiver operator curve for eight-input, any-condition models compared to 64.2% for BMI); (e) small neural networks are as effective as larger ones for the inference tasks considered; the proposed models are small enough that they can be expressed as human-readable equations, and they can be adapted to clinical settings to identify high-risk, undiagnosed populations., Competing Interests: All authors were employed by Amazon when this paper and its methods were devised., (Copyright: © 2024 Smith et al. Purpose: We aimed to investigate the associations between parental BMI and offspring BMI trajectories and to explore whether the parent-offspring BMI growth trajectory association differed according to family SEP or social mobility., Methods: We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Children's weight and height were collected from 1 to 18 years. Parents' height and weight were reported pre-pregnancy. We assessed family SEP by measuring parents' and grandparents' educational attainment, social class, and social mobility by changes in education attainment across generations. Multilevel models were used to develop trajectories and assess patterns of change in offspring BMI, to associate parental BMI with these trajectories, and explore whether these associations differed by family SEP and social mobility., Results: 13,612 children were included in the analyses. The average BMI of offspring whose parents were overweight or obese was higher throughout childhood and adolescence, compared to those with parents of normal BMI. Parental and grandparental low SEP were associated with higher child BMI, but there was little evidence of modification of parent-offspring associations. Study Objective: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the combined Kushida morphometric model (KMM) and the oxygen desaturation index (ODI) for screening individuals with obstructive sleep apnea., Methods: Diagnostic test study with adults >18 years, both sexes, polysomnography, body mass index, neck circumference and intraoral measurements., Results: 144 patients were invited; of these, 75 met the exclusion criteria. 55 individuals presented AHI ≥5 ev/h and 14, an AHI <5 ev/h. Three AHI cut-off points were evaluated: AHI ≥5, ≥15, ≥30 ev/h. When adopting the cut-off point of AHI ≥5 ev/h, the KMM showed sensitivity (SE) = 60.0 %, specificity (SP) = 71.4 % and 95 % confidence interval of the area under the curve (95 % CI of AUC) = 0.655; the combination of KMM and ODI (KMM + ODI) revealed SE = 73.0 %, SP = 71.4 % (95 % CI of AUC = 0.779) and the ODI showed SE = 76.4 % and SP = 92.9 % (95 % CI of AUC = 0.815). At the cut-off point of AHI ≥15 ev/h, the KMM presented SE = 64.1 %, SP = 76.7 % (95 % CI of AUC = 0.735); the KMM + ODI showed SE = 82.1 %, SP = 83.3 % (95 % CI of AUC = 0.895); and the ODI presented SE = 76.9 %, SP = 100.0 % (95 % CI of AUC = 0.903). Body weight, body mass index (BMI), Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS2002), and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) are among vital nutrition status indices employed during cancer treatment. These have also been associated with levels of blood chemistry panels (BCPs), which are touted as significant indicators of disease prognosis. However, it remains unclear which nutrition status index better predicts future trends in specific BCPs. Using the records of 407 cancer patients, we retrospectively examined the potential of nutritional status indices at baseline for predicting changes in specific BCPs over a 6-week period. Generally, both serum biochemical parameters and nutrition status indices fluctuated over the study period among study participants. PNI was often linearly associated with blood cell counts (white blood cells [WBCs] and hemoglobin) compared with anthropometric-based nutrition status indices. Increase in body weight was protective against having abnormal lymphocyte levels at 6 weeks (odds ratio [OR]: 0.960-0.974; CI: 0.935-0.997; P < 0.05), while increase in baseline PNI was associated with 0.865-0.941 and 0.675-0.915 odds of having future abnormal WBC and lymphocyte levels, respectively. Increases in PNI were also protective against having future abnormal albumin levels (OR: 0.734-0.886) and 8.5-12.5% decreases in the odds of having an abnormal C-reactive protein level in subsequent visits. Changes in NRS2002 tended to be associated with the odds of having future abnormal blood glucose levels. In conclusion, the serum biochemistry-derived nutrition status index, PNI, is a more consistent measure as an early indicator to track the trends of future changes in the BCPs of cancer patients. Background: This study focused on the relationship between adiposity and Rest-Activity Rhythms (RAR), utilizing both parametric cosine-based models and non-parametric algorithms. The emphasis was on the impact of varying measurement periods (7-28 days) on this relationship., Methods: We retrieved actigraphy data from two datasets, encompassing a diverse cohort recruited from an obesity outpatient clinic and a workplace health promotion program. Participants were required to wear a research-grade wrist actigraphy device continuously for a minimum of four weeks. The final dataset included 115 individuals (mean age 40.7 ± 9.5 years, 51 % female). We employed both parametric and non-parametric methods to quantify RAR using six standard variables. Additionally, the study evaluated the correlations between three key adiposity indices - Body Mass Index (BMI), Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT) area, and Body Fat Percentage (BF%) - and circadian rhythm indicators, controlling for factors like physical activity, age, and gender., Results: The obesity group displayed a significantly lower relative amplitude (RA) as per non-parametric algorithm findings, with a decreased amplitude noted in the parametric algorithm analysis, in comparison to the overweight and control groups. The relationship between circadian rhythm indicators and adiposity metrics over 7- to 28-day periods was examined. A notable negative correlation was observed between RA and both BMI and VAT, while correlation coefficients between adiposity indicators and non-parametric circadian parameters increased with extended durations of actigraphy data. Specifically, RA over a 28-day period was significantly correlated with BF%, a trend not seen in the 7-day measurement (p = 0.094) in multivariate linear regression. The strength of the correlation between BF% and 28-day RA was more pronounced than that in the 7-day period (p = 0.044). However, replacing RA with amplitude as per parametric cosinor fitting yielded no significant correlations for any of the measurement periods., Conclusion: The study concludes that a 28-day measurement period more effectively captures the link between disrupted circadian rhythms and adiposity. Background and Aims: A number of health issues, including high serum uric acid (SUA) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), have been linked to obesity based on observational evidence, though it's currently unclear how these issues are causally related. In order to determine whether obesity mediates this association, we set out to investigate the causal relationship between SUA, obesity, and CVD., Methods and Results: From publicly available genome-wide association studies, we acquired instrumental variables that had a strong correlation to SUA and body mass index (BMI). We employed multiple two-step Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses, using genetic and clinical data from various publicly available biological databases. The mediating role of BMI was examined through mediation analysis. SUA was genetically correlated with BMI [OR = 1.080, 95% CI: 1.024-1.139, P = 0.005]. There was a positive causal effect of SUA on AF [OR = 0.892, 95% CI: 0.804-0.990, P = 0.032], CAD [OR = 0.942, 95% CI: 0.890-0.997, P = 0.037], and EHT [OR = 1.080, 95% CI: 1.024-1.139, P = 0.005]. Among them, BMI mediated the effects of SUA on AF (42.2%; 95% CI, 35.3%-51.9%), CAD (76.3%; 95% CI, 63.4%-92.0%), and EHT (10.0%; 95% CI, 0%-20.0%)., Conclusion: Our research revealed a causal relationship between high SUA exposure and an increased risk of obesity. Additionally, a high SUA level was linked to an increased risk of various CVDs. Background: The potential adverse effects of plant-based diets on bone health have raised significant concern, while the prospective evidence is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between plant-based diet indexes and incident osteoporosis while exploring the underlying mechanisms involved in this relationship., Methods: The analysis included 202,063 UK Biobank participants conducted between 2006 and 2022. Plant-based diet indexes (hPDI and uPDI) were calculated using the 24-h dietary questionnaire. Cox proportional risk regression and mediation analysis were used to explore the associations of plant-based diet indexes with osteoporosis, estimating the contribution of BMI and blood markers., Results: We found the highest quintile for hPDI (HR = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.05 to 1.28) and uPDI (HR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.05 to 1.26) were associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis. BMI was identified as an important mediator in the association between hPDI and osteoporosis, with mediation proportions of 46.17%. For blood markers, the mediating (suppressing) effects of C-reactive protein, alkaline phosphatase, and insulin-like growth factor-1 on the association between uPDI (hPDI) and osteoporosis were significant, ranging from 5.63%-16.87% (4.57%-6.22%)., Conclusion: Adherence to a plant-based diet is associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis, with BMI and blood markers potentially contributing to this relationship. Objective: To adapt four dietary patterns for children and adolescents, and study their associations with sustainability (greenhouse-gas emissions-GHGE and land use-LU), and health (body mass index-BMI) indicators., Research Methods & Procedures: Dietary intake of children (3-9y) and adolescents (10-17y) from the National Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey 2015-2016, Portugal (n = 1153) was assessed through two non-consecutive interviews: one-day food diaries (children), and 24-h recalls (adolescents), using an automated multiple-pass method, including a picture book for portion sizes estimation. Adherence to the Eat-Lancet and World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, Mediterranean and Atlantic diets were evaluated using adapted versions for pediatrics of the World Index for Sustainability and Health (WISH), Diet Quality Index (DQI), Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) and Southern-European Atlantic Diet (SEAD), respectively. Diet-related GHGE and LU were estimated using the SHARP-Indicators database. BMI (measured) z-scores were classified according to WHO criteria. A standardized weighted health-sustainability composite index was created (BMI + 0.5*GHGE+0.5*LU). Adjusted linear regression models were computed., Results: WISH, DQI, MDS, and SEAD had weighted mean scores (range) of 50 (0-130), 24 (9-36), 20 (8-32), and 17 (8-32), respectively. All dietary patterns were associated with lower environmental impact, particularly in children, but not with BMI. Only MDS explained both health and sustainability indicators in childhood (composite index: sd.β = -0·223,95%CI:-0·347,-0·072,R 2  = 25.1 %), and adolescence (composite index: sd.β = -0·159,95%CI:-0·315,-0·003,R 2  = 31.3 %)., Conclusion: The Mediterranean diet was the most related to (higher) environmental sustainability and (lower) BMI. Objective: To investigate the association of mental health in childhood and adolescence with four outcomes at 18 years: ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption, body mass index (BMI), excessive weight (EW), and body composition, including fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) in kg, FM index (FMI) and FFM index (FFMI) in kg/m 2 ., Methods: Cohort study in which The Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) (6 and 11 years) and the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) (18 years) provided information on internalizing (INT), externalizing (EXT) and any mental disorder (ANY). The exposure was classified in: "never", "at 6 and/or 11 years", "at 18 years only" and "at 6, 11, and 18 years". Linear and logistic regression were run. All analyses were stratified by sex., Results: A total of 2722 participants were analyzed. At 18 years, female with EXT disorders at 6 and/or 11 years presented higher BMI (β: 1.70; 0.18-3.23), FM (β: 4.74; 1.42-8.06), and FMI (β: 1.53; 0.28-2.79) than those who never had. The odds of EW at 18 years was also higher in females with EXT disorders at 6 and/or 11 years (OR: 3.39; 1.56-7.36) and at the three time points (OR: 7.08; 1.69-29.59). Background: Bisphenols and phthalates are two classes of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) thought to influence weight and adiposity. Limited research has investigated their influence on maternal weight changes, and no prior work has examined maternal fat mass. We examined the associations between exposure to these chemicals during pregnancy and multiple maternal weight and fat mass outcomes., Methods: This study included a sample of 318 women enrolled in a Canadian prospective pregnancy cohort. Second trimester urinary concentrations of 2 bisphenols and 12 phthalate metabolites were quantified. Self-reported and measured maternal weights and measured skinfold thicknesses were used to calculate gestational weight gain, 3-months and 3- to 5-years postpartum weight retention, late pregnancy fat mass gain, total postpartum fat mass loss, and late postpartum fat mass retention. Adjusted robust regressions examined associations between chemicals and outcomes in the entire study population and sub-groups stratified by pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). Bayesian kernel machine regression examined chemical mixture effects., Results: Among women with underweight or normal pre-pregnancy BMIs, MBzP was negatively associated with weight retention at 3- to 5-years postpartum (B = -0.04, 95%CI: -0.07, -0.01). Among women with overweight or obese pre-pregnancy BMIs, MEHP and MMP were positively associated with weight retention at 3-months and 3- to 5-years postpartum, respectively (B's = 0.12 to 0.63, 95%CIs: 0.02, 1.07). DEHP metabolites and MCNP were positively associated with late pregnancy fat mass gain and late postpartum fat mass retention (B's = 0.04 to 0.18, 95%CIs: 0.001, 0.32). Further, the mixture of EDCs was positively associated with late pregnancy fat mass gain., Conclusion: In this cohort, pre-pregnancy BMI was a key determinant of the associations between second trimester exposure to bisphenols and phthalates and maternal weight changes and fat accumulation. Current scientific knowledge is insufficient on the effects of metal mixtures on early life growth trajectories. This study included 7118 mother-infant pairs from a Chinese birth cohort. Concentrations of 18 maternal urinary metals were quantified, and growth trajectories were conducted based on standardized body mass index (BMI) for up to eight times from 0 to 2 years. A three-phase analytical framework was applied to explore the risk ratios (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI) of co-exposure to metals on dynamic growth, along with potential modifiers. Five growth trajectory groups were identified. Exposure to metal mixtures driven by thallium (Tl, 34.8 %) and aluminum (Al, 16.2 %) was associated with an increased risk of low-rising trajectory (RR=1.58, 95 % CI: 1.25, 2.00); however, exposure to mixtures driven by strontium (Sr, 49.5 %) exhibited an inverse correlation (RR = 0.81, 95 % CI: 0.67, 0.97). Furthermore, infants with varying levels of Tl, Al and Sr, as well as modifiers including pre-pregnancy BMI and infant sex faced distinct risks of low-rising trajectory. Background: Heart failure (HF) is a rapidly growing global disease burden with high mortality rates. We aimed to utilize mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to investigate the association between educational attainment (EA) and HF, and to evaluate the contribution of modifiable risk factors as mediators., Methods: We applied a two-sample MR approach based on the largest genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to investigate the causal relationship between EA and HF. Data collection was conducted in July 2023. We then conducted mediation analyses to explore whether body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mediate the effect of EA on HF, and utilized multivariable MR to estimate the proportion of mediation attributed to these factors., Results: Genetically predicted 3.4 years of additional education was associated with a decrease in the risk of HF (OR 0.76 for each 3.4 years of schooling; 95% CI 0.72, 0.81). BMI, T2DM, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure mediated 40.82% (95% CI: 28.86%, 52.77%), 18.00% (95% CI: 12.10%, 23.90%), 11.60% (95% CI: 7.63%, 15.56%), and 7.80% (95% CI: 4.63%, 10.96%) of the EA-HF association, respectively. All risk factors combined were estimated to mediate 63.81% (95% CI: 45.91%, 81.71%) of the effect of EA on HF., Conclusion: Higher EA has a protective effect against the risk of HF, and potential mechanisms may include regulation of BMI, blood pressure, and blood glucose. Although prior studies have shown that adiponectin synthesis is genetically determined and that its levels influence susceptibility to T2D, the results in this regard have been inconsistent. This study aims, to investigate the relationship between adiponectin gene variants with the risk of developing T2D among Tunisian women and in relation to their BMI status. A cohort of 491 Tunisian T2D women and 373 non-diabetic subjects participated in the study. Nine ADIPOQ variants namely rs16861194, rs17300539, rs266729, rs822395, rs822396, rs2241766, rs1501299, rs2241767 and rs3774261 were selected and genotyped using the TaqMan® SNP genotyping assay. Fasting serum adiponectin levels were quantified using ELISA. The results showed that only the rs17300539 variant exhibited a significant association with the risk of T2D. However, upon considering T2D group stratification based on BMI (normal weight [18-24.99 Kg/m 2 ], overweight [25-29.99 Kg/m 2 ] and obese [30-34.99 Kg/m 2 ]), the ADIPOQ rs2241766 variant emerged as a contributing risk factor for increased BMI in obese women with T2D. Linear regression analysis revealed that the minor allele (A), (GA) and (AA) genotypes of rs17300539 as well as the (G) allele and (GG) genotype of rs2241766 were significantly associated with hypoadiponectinemia in T2D subjects. Two haplotypes namely GGCAATGAA and AGCCGTGGA, were identified as conferring a higher risk of T2D with the GGCAATGAA haplotype also correlating with hypoadiponectinemia. Our study underscores the importance of the rs17300539 variant and the GGCAATGAA haplotype in the risk of T2D and hypoadiponectinemia. Background: Shared decision-making supports women's choices in pregnancy. Women with high body mass index (≥35 kg/m 2 ) experience a high rate of interventions in pregnancy, labour, and birth, providing an opportunity for clinicians to implement shared decision-making in practice. However, weight stigma may limit women's opportunities for shared decision-making., Aim: To understand how pregnant women with high body mass index perceive their involvement in antenatal decision-making, including whether weight stigma influences their experience., Methods: Women with high body mass index were recruited via purposive sampling from two sites in Melbourne, Australia. Semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis., Findings: Ten pregnant women consented to participate. Three themes and six sub-themes were identified. These were: 1) Trusting the system, 2) Who takes the lead?, and 3) Defying disease., Discussion: Shared decision-making is limited for women with high body mass index in antenatal care, and weight stigma is experienced by women. Clinical practice recommendations relating to excess weight have the potential to further limit women's involvement in decision-making if adequate support is not provided to ensure women's understanding and involvement in care., Conclusion: Women's involvement in care is a central component of shared decision-making and it is currently limited for women with high body mass index. Introduction: Recent studies suggest the existence of a physiologic basis for bone rarefaction and increased risk for fractures. This study aimed to address anthropometric differences between patients with narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) and type 2 (NT2) and discrepancies in bone mineral content (BMC) as a function of hypocretin-1 (Hcrt-1) measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)., Methods: We have evaluated 31 adult patients (aged 18-65 years) with NT1 and 18 patients with NT2, comparing the groups in terms of anthropometric variables - body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) - and percentage of bone mineral content (%BMC), measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Statistical analysis assessed the effects of Hcrt-1 levels on CSF, dietary intake, and medication use over these variables. Statistical significance was achieved with a confidence interval of 95 % and p < 0.05., Results: Patients with NT1 presented with higher BMI (32.04 ± 6.95 vs. 25.38 ± 4.26 kg/m 2 ; p < 0.01) and WHR (0.89 ± 0.09 vs. 0.83 ± 0.09; p = 0.02) compared to NT2, in detriment of %BMC, which was lower for NT1 (4.1 ± 1.02 vs. 4.89 ± 0.59; p < 0.01). Hcrt-1 in CSF showed a positive correlation with %BMC (r = +0.48, p < 0.01) and a negative correlation with anthropometric features (BMI: r = -0.54, p < 0.01; WHR: r = -0.37, p = 0.01). There was a correlation between WHR and diary caloric intake (r = +0.42, p < 0.01)., Conclusion: The evaluation of patients with narcolepsy presupposes a syndromic approach comprising symptoms that go far beyond excessive daytime sleepiness. Objectives: To establish age-specific and sex-specific reference values and equations for the 1-minute sit-to-stand (1MSTS) and 5 times sit-to-stand (5TSTS) tests for Portuguese adults., Design: Cross-sectional study. Descriptive statistics were explored to compute reference values and reference equations were established with a forward stepwise multiple regression., Setting: Community., Participants: 546 adult volunteers without disabilities [age range 18 to 95 years; 58% female] were recruited., Main Outcome Measures: Data on age, sex, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), smoking status and physical activity were collected using a structured questionnaire developed specifically for this study., Procedure: Participants performed three repetitions of the 1MSTS and 5TSTS and the best repetition was used for analysis., Results: Normative values were provided by sex for each age decade. Purpose: We investigated time trends of the obesity-mortality association, accounting for age, sex, and cause-specific deaths., Methods: We analysed pooled nationwide data in Sweden for 3,472,310 individuals aged 17-39 years at baseline in 1963-2016. Cox regression and flexible parametric survival models investigated BMI-mortality associations in sub-groups of sex and baseline calendar years (men: <1975, 1975-1985, ≥1985 and women: <1985, 1985-1994, ≥1995)., Results: Comparing men with obesity vs. normal weight, all-cause and "other-cause" mortality associations decreased over periods; HR (95% CI) 1.92 (1.83-2.01) and 1.70 (1.58-1.82) for all-cause and 1.72 (1.58-1.87) and 1.40 (1.28-1.53) for "other-cause" mortality in <1975 and ≥1985, but increased for CVD mortality; HR 2.71 (2.51-2.94) and 3.91 (3.37-4.53). Higher age at death before 1975 coincided with more obesity-related deaths at higher ages. Furthermore, the all-cause mortality association for different ages in men showed no clear differences between periods (p-interaction=0.09), suggesting no calendar effect after accounting for attained age. Similar, but less pronounced, results were observed in women. The association between body mass index (BMI) and binge-eating disorder (BED) is well-established. However, data on the extent to which BMI is associated with progression from binge-eating behavior into BED among adolescents are limited, which was the aim of this investigation. Participants were 9964 U.S. adolescents from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, aged 9-13 at the time of study enrollment. A computerized parent-reported assessment was used to establish adolescents' binge-eating behaviors and BED. Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for sociodemographic covariates were used to examine prospective associations between BMI and likelihood of BED onset among a) adolescents with binge-eating behavior, and b) adolescents with no binge-eating behavior. Of 975 adolescents who met the study criteria for binge-eating behavior, 89 (9.1%) subsequently met the study criteria for BED. Of 8989 adolescents with no binge-eating behavior, 82 (0.9%) subsequently met the study criteria for BED. BMI percentile was significantly associated with the likelihood of BED onset in participants with (adjusted HR = 1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00, 1.06) and participants without (adjusted HR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.03, 1.07) binge-eating behavior. Results were also significant when examining BMI as a dichotomous predictor (above and below 85th percentile) among those with (adjusted HR = 2.60, 95% CI 1.00, 6.68) and those without (adjusted HR = 6.01, 95% CI 3.90, 11.10) binge-eating behavior. Overall, results indicate that elevated BMI is prospectively associated with a greater risk for BED onset among U.S. adolescents with or without binge-eating behavior. Purpose: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary brain cancer in adults with a very poor prognosis. Metabolic drivers of tumorigenesis are highly relevant within the central nervous system, where glucose is the critical source of energy. The impact of obesity on survival outcomes in patients with GBM is not well established. This study investigates the prognostic value of body mass index (BMI) in patients diagnosed with GBM., Methods: Adult patients with newly diagnosed GBM treated at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2022, were included in the study. BMI was calculated using the formula BMI = kg/m 2 . Patients BMI groups were underweight (BMI < 19.00), normal weight (BMI 19.00-24.99), overweight (BMI 25-29.99), and obese (BMI > 30.00). All patients received 60 Gy of radiation therapy with concurrent and adjuvant temozolomide following maximal safe resection. A difference in clinical outcomes of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were evaluated between the groups using Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests., Results: A total of 392 patients met inclusion criteria. The median age was 60.3 (range 18.9-86.7), with 144 females and 248 males. Median BMI was 27.0 (Range; 17.7-52.9). Non-overweight GBM patients (BMI < 25.00, OS 2.1 years, CI 1.7-2.4 years) had increased overall survival compared to overweight patients (BMI ≥ 25.00, OS 1.5 years, CI 1.4-1.6 years) (p < 0.001). Patients with MGMT-methylated GBM also had significantly greater OS and PFS compared to MGMT-unmethylated patients (p < 0.001). Non-overweight GBM patients (BMI < 25.00, median PFS 1.5 years, CI 1.3-2.0 years) also had increased progression-free survival compared to overweight patients (BMI ≥ 25.00, median PFS 1.1 years, CI 0.9-1.2 years) (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Our study indicates normal BMI (19.00-24.99) at the time of GBM diagnosis is a favorable prognostic indicator for overall and progression-free survival. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the relations between psychological distress, alexithymia, disordered eating behaviors (DEBs), and body mass index (BMI) and to assess if psychological stress would mediate the influence of alexithymia on DEBs in adolescents. A total of 1609 high school students (58.9% females) aged 14-18 years were included in the study. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. DEBs including emotional eating, cognitive restraint, and uncontrolled eating were assessed with the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire, psychological distress was assessed with the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and alexithymia was assessed with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Anthropometric measurements were performed. Psychological distress was found to be positively associated with alexithymia, emotional eating, uncontrolled eating, and cognitive restraint (p < 0.01). Both direct and indirect effects of alexithymia on emotional eating and uncontrolled eating were significant. Psychological distress partially mediated the relationship between alexithymia and uncontrolled eating (β = 0.05) and emotional eating (β = 0.04), while it fully mediated the relationship between alexithymia and cognitive restraint (β = 0.05). BMI z score was not correlated with alexithymia and psychological distress. Emotional eating (β = 0.16) and cognitive restraint (β = 0.34), but not uncontrolled eating, significantly were associated with BMI z score. This study demonstrated that alexithymia and psychological distress are positively associated with DEBs in adolescents. It also showed that psychological distress plays a mediating role between alexithymia and DEBs. Moreover, it showed that emotional eating and cognitive restraint are positively associated with the BMI z score. Objectives: Given the innovative nature of the method, our study aimed to assess the prognostic significance of body mass index (BMI)-adjusted calf circumference (CC) in older patients who are hospitalized., Methods: This was a unique analysis as part of other cohorts comprising general hospitalized patients aged 60 years or older of both sexes. Only patients with excess weight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m 2 ) were included. CC was adjusted by reducing 3, 7, or 12 cm for BMI (in kg/m 2 ) within 25-29.9, 30-39.9, and ≥40 kg/m 2 , respectively. CC was considered low if ≤ 34 cm for males and ≤ 33 cm for females. Clinical outcomes included prolonged length of hospital stay (LOS) and mortality., Results: A total of 222 patients were included. After BMI adjustments, 72.1% of the patients were reclassified from a normal CC category to a low CC category. The frequency of low CC increased from 33.8% to 81.9% following BMI adjustments. Among those reclassified to the low CC, 11 died, compared to only 2 patients in the group that maintained a normal CC classification. BMI-adjusted CC was inversely associated with mortality (HR adjusted 0.84, 95% CI 0.73 to 0.95), but not with prolonged LOS., Conclusions: Our novel study highlights the prognostic value of BMI-adjusted CC. As an anthropometric marker of muscle mass, it proved to be a predictor of mortality in older patients with high BMI. Background: During pregnancy, women's bodies undergo rapid body weight and size changes within a relatively short period. Pregnancy may therefore, be associated with an increased vulnerability for developing body image dissatisfaction linked to adverse health outcomes for the mother (e.g., depression, eating disorders) and child (e.g., impaired self-regulation, childhood obesity). The present study aims to examine the prevalence and trajectories of body image dissatisfaction during pregnancy and postpartum and its relationship to pre-pregnancy BMI. This is the first study that investigates prevalence rates of body image dissatisfaction not only ante- but also postpartum, and that compares trajectories of women with normal weight and overweight., Methods: A prospective longitudinal design with a quantitative approach was applied. Healthy pregnant women (N = 136) answered paper-pencil or online questionnaires at four time points (18th-22nd and 33rd-37th week of gestation, 3 and 6 months postpartum). Body image dissatisfaction was assessed using the German version of the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q). Both questionnaires are considered reliable and valid measures of several aspects of body image, and the BSQ allows for calculating prevalence rates by providing cut-off values. Using not just one but two body image questionnaires, trajectories of body image dissatisfaction can be compared. Pre-pregnancy BMI was assessed retrospectively via self-reported weight and height., Results: The proportion of women reporting elevated levels of body image dissatisfaction was 6.6% (n = 9) in the second trimester, 2.9% (n = 4) in the third trimester, 11.0% (n = 15) three months postpartum, and 10.3% (n = 14) six months postpartum. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed that body image dissatisfaction significantly decreased from pre-pregnancy to pregnancy, remained stable during pregnancy, and returned to pre-pregnancy levels three to six months postpartum. Mixed between-within ANOVA showed that the overweight/obese group reported significantly higher levels of body image dissatisfaction at each measurement point except during the third trimester than women in the normal weight group. Significant but small interaction effects between time and pre-pregnancy BMI were found., Conclusions: The results revealed that approximately every tenth woman is affected by body image dissatisfaction after childbirth. Women with a higher BMI level before pregnancy are particularly at risk of experiencing body image dissatisfaction. Healthcare providers should screen for body image dissatisfaction, in particular after childbirth, and inform affected women about possible adverse health outcomes and treatment options. Study limitations concern the drop-out rate of 51.4% and the retrospective and self-reported assessment of pre-pregnancy BMI.
