In this study, a comparative analysis of silver nanoparticles treatment and chitosan coating on packaging paper barrier properties was carried out. In order to examine the water, grease, and antibacterial barrier properties of silver nanoparticle-treated and chitosan-coated laboratory-obtained paper samples, a mixture of bleached softwood and hardwood celluloses was used. In order to conduct the comparative analysis SEM, water contact angle, Cobb60, and Kit tests were carried out on a cellulose sample, and four paper samples (three of them treated with silver nanoparticles—1, 2, and 3 mL/20 cm2 or chitosan coated—0.5, 1, and 2 g/m2) together with the inhibition activity against nine Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungal strains. The study found out that increasing the silver nanoparticle treatment and chitosan coating led to improved water resistance, while grease resistance was improved only for chitosan coated paper samples. Additionally, paper treated with 3 mL/20 cm2 of silver nanoparticles had the highest antibacterial protection (81.6%) against the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, followed by Gram-negative Escherichia coli (75.8%). For the rest of the studied microorganisms, the average efficiency of the treated paper was 40.79%. The treatment of the paper with 1 and 2 mL/20 cm2 of silver nanoparticles was less effective—27.13 and 39.83%, respectively. The antibacterial protection of 2 g/m2 chitosan-coated paper samples was the most effective (average 79%) against the tested bacterial, yeast, and fungal strains. At 1 and 0.5 g/m2 chitosan coatings, the efficiency was 72.38% and 54.67%, respectively. Gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, and fungal strains were more sensitive to chitosan supplementation.

Improving the shelf lives of fruits is challenging. The biodegradable polysaccharide pullulan exhibits excellent film-forming ability, gas barrier performance, and natural decomposability, making it an optimal material for fruit preservation. To overcome problems of high cost and film porosity of existing packaging technologies, we aimed to develop pullulan-based packaging paper to enhance the shelf lives of fruits. A thin paper coating comprising a mixture of 15 wt.% pullulan solution at various standard viscosities (75.6, 77.8, and 108.5 mPa·s) with tea polyphenols (15:2) and/or vitamin C (150:1) improved the oxygen transmission rate (120–160 cm3 m−2·24 h·0.1 MPa), water vapor transmission rate (−1 m−2·h·kPa), maximum free radical clearance rate (>87%), and antibacterial properties of base packaging paper. Grapes wrapped with these pullulan-based papers exhibited less weight loss (>4.41%) and improved hardness (>16.4%) after 10 days of storage compared to those of control grapes (wrapped in untreated/base paper). Grapes wrapped with pullulan-based paper had >12.6 wt.% total soluble solids, >1.5 mg/g soluble protein, >0.44 wt.% titratable acidity, and ≥4.5 mg 100 g−1 ascorbic acid. Thus, pullulan-based paper may prolong the shelf life of grapes with operational convenience, offering immense value for fruit preservation.

The demand for paper-based packaging materials as an alternative to incumbent disposable petroleum-derived polymers for food packaging applications is ever-growing. However, typical paper-based formats are not suitable for use in unconventional applications due to inherent limitations (e.g., excessive hydrophilicity, lack antimicrobial ability), and accordingly, enabling new capabilities is necessity. Herein, a simple and environmentally friendly strategy was proposed to introduce antimicrobial and hydrophobic functions to cellulose paper through successive chemical grafting of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and cinnamaldehyde (CA). The results revealed that cellulose paper not only showed long-term antibacterial effect on different bacteria, but also inhibited a wide range of fungi. Encouragingly, the modified paper, which is fluorine-free, displays a high contact angle of 119.7°. Thus, even in the wet state, the modified paper can still maintain good mechanical strength. Meanwhile, the multifunctional composite papers have excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Compared with ordinary cellulose paper, multifunctional composite paper can effectively prolong the shelf life of strawberries. Enterococcus faecalis is one of the bacteria that is commonly found in infected root canals, necrotic pulp and failure of root canal treatment, while Phorphyromonas gingivalis play a role in inducing periodontitis. Both bacteria can enter the blood circulation and lead to risk factors for systemic disease such as atherosclerosis. ChKM is the most widely used root canal sterilization, and also 0.2 % chlorhexidine mouthwash for long-term usage. It can destroy a potent cell and is allergenic. Developing an alternative material for root canal sterilization and mouthwash for plaque control is necessary. One of the alternative natural products that is predicted to have antibacterial effect is robusta coffee husk peels. This research aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) husk extract on E. faecalis and P. gingivalis. The robusta coffee husk was extracted using the maceration process with 96 % ethanol as the solvent. This research is an experimental laboratory, was tested by disk diffusion methods (Kirby-Baurer) using Gram-positive E. faecalis ATCC 29212 and Gram-negative P. gingivalis ATCC 33277 consisted of 6 groups: Aquadest as a negative control group, ChKM (for E.facecalis) and 0.2 % chlorhexidine (for P. gingivalis) as positive control, 4 treatment groups of coffee robusta husk extract with different concentrations there were 250, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 mg/mL. The antibacterial effect was examined by measuring the clear zone around the disk paper. The results of this study proved the presence of antibacterial activity of coffee robusta husk extract against E. faecalis and P. gingivalis. Bioactive substances that can prevent the growth of pathogenic germs can be produced by endophytic bacteria This study aims to identify seaweed endophytic bacteria (Turbinaria ornata, Sargassum crassifolium, Sargassum polycystum) and their potential antibacterial activity against skin disease agents (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis). In February 2023 (the rainy season), seaweed was harvested from the waters off Panjang Island in Jepara Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Endophytic bacterial isolates that had been effectively isolated and purified were directly tested for antibacterial activity. Three isolates with the best antibacterial activity were extracted using the ethyl acetate solvent. The extract samples will be put through additional antibacterial testing using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and paper disc diffusion procedures. Using the thin layer chromatography (TLC), the class of chemical components in the extract was determined. A molecular technique based on the 16s rRNA gene (1,400 bp) was used to identify endophytic bacterial isolates. Three species of seaweed yielded 25 isolates of endophytic bacteria: 11 from T. ornata, 7 from S. crassifolium, and 7 from S. polycystum. To.09.pp, To.10.pp, and Sc.06.pp were the 3 isolates with the highest antibacterial activity in the direct challenge test. Zone of inhibition results from subsequent antibacterial testing using paper disc diffusion ranged from medium to very strong intensity. To.10.pp sample's MIC test yielded the best results, with S. aureus and S. epidermidis concentrations of 937.5 and 1,875 µg/mL, respectively. MBC test yielded the highest findings, with S. aureus and S. epidermidis concentrations of 1,875 and 1,875 µg/mL, respectively. The To.10.pp sample yielded terpenoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids, according to TLC analysis of chemical constituent groups. Acinetobacter indicus strain 80-1-2 and Vibrio harveyi strain B14-1 were identified as potential endophytic bacteria from T. ornata, and Acinetobacter indicus strain 80-1-2 from S. crassifolium. The process of wound healing is complex and dynamic. Given the unique nature of the skin, wound healing requires dressings that meet a wide range of functional requirements. Due to their unique structure and properties, hydrogel dressings provide ideal conditions for supporting the process of wound healing and can be enhanced with additional functions to meet the specific requirements of different types of wounds. Compared to traditional wound dressings, the newly developed hydrogel wound dressing offers several advantages, including its soft texture, ability to retain moisture, oxygen permeability, and comfort. With the advancement of medical technology, higher demands are being placed on the functionality of hydrogel dressings. Therefore, this paper offers a comprehensive overview of hydrogel wound dressings with various functions. These functions primarily include hemostatic hydrogel dressings, antibacterial hydrogel dressings, angiogenesis-promoting hydrogel dressings, and other functional hydrogel dressings. The paper uses inverted glancing angle deposition (I-GLAD) for creating antibacterial surfaces. Antibacterial surfaces are found in nature, such as on insect wings, eyes, and plant leaves. Since the bactericidal mechanism is purely physical for these surfaces, the antimicrobial resistance of bacteria to traditional chemical antibiotics can be overcome. The technical problem is how to mimic, synthesize, and scale up the naturally occurring antibacterial surfaces for practical applications, given the fact that most of those surfaces are composed of three-dimensional hierarchical micro-nano structures. This paper proposes to use I-GLAD as a novel bottom-up nanofabrication technique to scale up bio-inspired nano-structured antibacterial surfaces. Our innovative I-GLAD nanofabrication technique includes traditional GLAD deposition processes alongside the crucial inverting process. Following fabrication, we explore the antibacterial efficacy of I-GLAD surfaces using two types of bacteria: Escherichia coli (E. coli), a gram-negative bacterium, and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a gram-positive bacterium. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows the small tips and flexible D/P (feature size over period) ratio of I-GLAD nanoneedles, which is required to achieve the desired bactericidal mechanism. Antibacterial properties of the I-GLAD samples are validated by achieving flat growth curves of E. coli and S. aureus, and direct observation under SEM. The paper bridges the knowledge gaps of seeding techniques for GLAD, and the control/optimization of the I-GLAD process to tune the morphologies of the nano-protrusions. Water pollution from wastewater is still a major environmental concern today. One of the most harmful pollutants is a dye, which is produced in large quantities by a variety of industries, including textile, paper, petrochemical, and plastics. Herein, in the presence of biopolymer chitosan (Cs), controllable synthesis of chitosan/tungsten oxide (Cs/WO3) nanosheet was explored by a precipitation method at room temperature (R.T). The physicochemical properties of Cs/WO3 nanosheet specimens were evaluated using different tools such as XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, and UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The tunable size for exhibited sheets ranged from 100 to 400 nm and 60 to 200 nm thickness. Under optimal conditions, the photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue (MB) was investigated via visible light irradiation, and 0.6 g Cs/WO3 nanosheet proposed complete decomposition of MB within 40 min at neutral pH. Also, the antibacterial effects of the Cs/WO3 nanosheet against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria are examined. Most functional hydrogels have biocompatibility problems in the pursuit of high performance, and there is an urgent need to study the problem of maintaining good biocompatibility and making hydrogels both multifunctional. Here, this paper proposes polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) with good biocompatibility as hydrogel substrates and nano-ferric copper-zinc oxide (nFCZ) as the main antimicrobial source. The physicochemical double crosslinked network hydrogels were prepared using one-pot method. Finally, the conductive properties of the hydrogel were enhanced by soaking in CaCl2 solution, and the PHP dual-network conductive antimicrobial composite hydrogel was prepared. The hydrogel was characterised, tested and analysed through various tests. The results showed that the obtained dual-network composite hydrogels had good mechanical properties, stable sensing properties, excellent swelling rate, biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity, and the bacterial inhibition rate against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was higher than 99%. The stable electrical conductivity and sensing properties promote cell regeneration at the wound site, which broadens the scope of hydrogel applications in biomedical fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The world now needs new antimicrobial drugs because many infections are resistant to existing treatments. Many microbial infections pose a significant global health challenge and a critical need for new, effective treatment. Soft corals are being explored for their potential as sources of new antimicrobial drugs. The present study aimed to determine the antimicrobial, antifungal, and antimycobacterial properties of the crude extract of coral Junceella delicata, collected from Madh island, Mumbai. The crude extract was prepared by adding an equal volume of methanol: dichloromethane (1:1) for 24 hours in the water bath at 45 °C. The sample was filtered through Whatman filter paper No. 1 and was subjected to concentrate in a rotary vacuum evaporator at 45° C. Further, antimycobacterial drugs viz. Isoniazid, Ethambutol, Pyrazinamide, Rifampicin, and Streptomycin were used to compare the activity with crude extract of the coral. It was observed that Coral J. delicata extract showed a zone of inhibition against all the bacterial strains viz., Klebsiella pneumonia (15 mm), Escherichia coli (15 mm), Salmonella typhi (14 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (09 mm), Sarcina lutea (15 mm), Streptococcus pyogenes (12 mm), Corynebacterium diphtheria (27 mm), Staphylococcus aureus (28 mm), whereas antifungal activity was observed in Penicillium sp.(10 mm), Candida albicans (14 mm) and no activity was observed in Aspergillus sp. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) strain showed sensitivity at (25µg/ml of coral extract, nearly close to the standard antituberculosis drug pyrazinamide (3.2µg/ml). The above results indicated that the crude extract of J. delicata had antibacterial activity nearly against the standard antituberculosis drug Pyrazinamide. For biomedical applications, hydroxyapatite and carbon nanotubes are currently being applied over duplex stainless steel (DSS) alone in order to increase corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. A composite of hydroxyapatite and multi-walled carbon nanotubes was used to improve biocompatibility, osseointegration, and corrosion resistance on 2205 DSS using electrophoretic deposition. The study investigates the effects of potential and time on the properties of the deposited layer in order to determine electrophoretic deposition factor values that are appropriate. The coating properties and effective groups of the phase resulting from this process are determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The antibacterial properties of E. coli bacterial strains are investigated for the coated layer. The adhesion between the hydroxyapatite and multi-walled carbon nanotube layers on the 2205 duplex stainless steel substrate was qualitatively evaluated using the adhesive tape test. It was found that the optimal suspension, which consists of 65 weight percent hydrogen acetate and 35 weight percent multi-walled carbon nanotubes, had a homogeneous morphology, a thick structure, and no cracks when coated at 50 V for two minutes. Simple Summary: In order to improve the comprehensive utilization of oil tea seed meal and increase the comprehensive economic benefits of the oil tea industry. In this paper, the low eutectic solvent was used as the extraction system, and the ultrasonic extraction method was combined with the enzymatic method to jointly extract the tea saponins. It was further purified with a large-pore adsorption resin to develop a set of environmentally friendly, energy-saving, and efficient tea saponin extraction and purification processes. On this basis, the tea saponins extracted from oil tea seed meal were further analyzed for antioxidant capacity and bacteriostatic activity. The results provided the scientific experimental basis and theoretical support for the efficient use of oil tea by-products. Tea saponins have high surface-active and biological activities and are widely used in chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Tea saponins are usually extracted using ethanol or water, but both methods have their disadvantages, including a negative impact on the environment, high energy consumption, and low purity. In this study, we explored an effective process for extracting tea saponins from tea meal using deep eutectic solvents combined with ultrasonic extraction and enzymatic techniques. The experimental results showed that a high extraction efficiency of 20.93 ± 0.48% could be achieved in 20 min using an ultrasonic power of 40% and a binary DES consisting of betaine and ethylene glycol (with a molar ratio of 1:3) at a material–liquid ratio of 1:35 and that the purity of the tea saponins after purification by a large-pore adsorption resin reached 95.94%, which was higher than that of commercially available standard tea saponin samples. In addition, the extracted tea saponins were evaluated for their antioxidant and bacteriostatic activities using chemical and biological methods; the results showed that the tea saponins extracted using these methods possessed antioxidant properties and displayed significant antibacterial activity. Therefore, the present study developed a method for using deep eutectic solvents as an environmentally friendly technological solution for obtaining high-purity tea saponins from tea meal oil. Collagen possesses high biocompatibility with all tissue and cell types in the body, enabling the creation of multifunctional composite materials for medical applications. In biomedical engineering, naturally-sourced collagen is often combined with diverse organic and inorganic bioactive components to eliminate defects and disorders in fields including orthopedics, dermatology, and more. At the same time, medical-related infection issues and the precise treatment needs of patients require collagen composite biomaterials to have antibacterial properties and customized structures. This paper reviews the antibacterial functionalization of collagen composite biomaterials in recent years, including the combination with inorganic or organic antibacterial agents, which is beneficial for preventing and controlling biological contamination in medical applications. Then, the existing problems and future development directions for the architecturalization of collagen composite materials with 3D printing were discussed, providing guidance for personalized customization of multifunctional materials to meet the specific needs of patients in the future. Nowadays, infectious diseases pose an alarming global threat to human health. The genus Senna is among the most well-known taxonomic categories commonly used in folk medicine to confront these challenges. Motivated by its traditional uses, a comprehensive study was conducted on the roots extract of Senna siamea, aiming to address the in vitro antibacterial and antioxidant efficacy of phytochemicals from the dichloromethane: methanol (1:1) roots extract of the plant, along with in silico computational studies. The separation of compounds was achieved using silica gel column chromatography. Whereas, the antibacterial and antioxidant activities were examined using paper disc diffusion and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assays, respectively. Silica gel column chromatography of the dichloromethane: methanol (1:1) roots extract afforded lupeol (1), β-sitosterol (2a) and stigmasterol (2b), chrysophanol (3), betulinic acid (4), and glyceryl-1-hexacosanoate (5). Although these compounds have been previously reported from the plant, proof of their medicinal applications via in vitro and in silico studies is still lacking. Notably, our findings showed remarkable inhibition zones by the extract (18.00 ± 0.00 mm and 17.17 ± 0.24 mm) against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, at 50 mg/mL compared to ciprofloxacin (23.33 ± 0.47 mm and 22.00 ± 0.00 mm, respectively), showcasing its potential antibacterial efficiency. Considerable inhibition zones were also recorded by chrysophanol (3) against E. coli (16.33 ± 0.24 mm) and S. pyogenes (16.00 ± 0.00 mm) at 2 mg/mL, compared to ciprofloxacin which showed 23.33 ± 0.47 mm and 21.67 ± 0.47 mm, respectively, signifying its potent antibacterial activities. In addition, the crude extract and chrysophanol (3) exhibited substantial IC50 values (1.24 and 1.71 µg/mL, respectively), suggesting their significant antioxidant potential compared to that of ascorbic acid (IC50: 0.53 µg/mL). Chrysophanol (3) fulfilled Lipinski's rule with no violation and lupeol (1), β-sitosterol (2a), stigmasterol (2b), betulinic acid (4), and glyceryl-1-hexacosanoate (5) displayed one violation each which were in favor of the drug-likeness predictions. All the compounds exhibited no cytotoxicity and except betulinic acid (4), all the compounds also showed no carcinogenicity properties which were consistent with the prediction results of ciprofloxacin. The molecular docking computations revealed that all the compound isolates displayed strong and nearly strong binding affinities against all protein targets, ranging from − 6.6 kcal/mol to -9.2 kcal/mol (lupeol (1) against E. coli DNA gyrase B and topoisomerase II α, respectively). Thus, the present findings suggest the roots of Senna siamea for potential medicinal applications against multi-drug resistant pathogens hence validating its ethno-medicinal uses. Background: The study of plant-based medications, or phytomedicine, involves a wide spectrum of biological activities. Due to the existence of secondary metabolites, herbal medicine has been used and practiced throughout history for the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. Over the past century or so, numerous novel compounds with medicinal potential have been derived from plants. In the age of growing super infections and the emergence of resistant strains, natural medicines are inspiring optimism. The review discusses the role of herbal medicine as antibacterial agents and their use in wound care and management of wounds and the critical role of secondary metabolites of herbal plants in fighting bacterial infections. Some medicinal plants such as St. John's wort (SJW) (Hypericum perforatum), Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Ginger (Zingiber officinale), and nopal cactus (Opuntia ficusindica (L.)) also possess wide range of biological activities and can give a synergistic effect if combined with antibiotics. Method: A narrative review of papers relevant to the use of phytomedicine in treating infections was conducted by using electronic databases PubMed, CrossREF, and Google Scholar. Short conclusion: Phytomedicine is one of the top options for the treatment of chronic illnesses for millions of people around the world. To learn about the bioactive components of medicinal plants, their medical benefits, and their synergistic or additive effects to enhance the action of medications, substantial new studies are still needed. Seabuckthorn is rich in polysaccharides, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, fatty acids, vitamins, and other active components. It has biological functions such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, liver-protecting, and cholagogic, which can enhance the immunity and antioxidant function of livestock and poultry, improve growth performance, and improve the quality of livestock and poultry products. Adding seabuckthorn residue, seeds, leaves or extracts to diet can promote the production of pigs, sheep, dairy cows and broilers to varying degrees, reduce feed costs and improve the economic benefits of breeding, but the active components and molecular mechanisms of seabuckthorn promoting livestock and poultry production are unclear. In this paper, the active components, biological functions, and application of seabuckthorn in livestock and poultry production were summarized, which provided a reference for the mechanism research, production application and development of seabuckthorn promoting livestock and poultry production. As the amount of oily wastewater discharged from industrial and domestic sources increases, materials used for oil/water separation have received widespread research attention in recent years. However, many reported separation materials with special wetting properties require complex and environmentally unfriendly preparation processes. Therefore, green and efficient materials for oily wastewater and emulsion separation are urgently needed. In this paper, inspired by the scrobiculate and honeycomb-shaped porous structure of natural balsa wood, functionalized wood was designed as an oil/water separation and emulsion purification material by delignification and a simple surface modification process. A deep eutectic solvent (DES) was used to remove the lignin and hemicellulose components. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQA) were used to functionalize and obtain the superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic wood material. The water contact angle of the functionalized wood in air reached 0°, while the underwater contact angles for different kinds of oil were greater than 150°. Various oils were effectively separated with a high separation efficiency (> 99.2%). Moreover, the separation efficiency of kerosene from water still reached 99.5% after 30 separation test cycles. After long-term immersion in different pH and salt solutions, the separation efficiency for a kerosene/water mixture was still greater than 99%. Rapid and continuous oil/water separation was achieved conveniently. More importantly, the selective wetting properties and complex porous structure of the functionalized wood enabled the purification of unstable and surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with high separation efficiencies. The functionalized wood material also showed promising antibacterial properties, with a good inhibitory effect on the growth of both Gram-positive S.aureus and Gram-negative E.coli. This will effectively prevent contamination and the decrease in separation efficiency caused by mold on the surface. Background: Fumaria parviflora (FP) is a medicinal herb that is used in several traditional medicines to treat diseases like folliculitis, erysipelas. Fumaria parviflora Lam. belonging to the family Papaveraceae is used widely in traditional and folkloric medicine. It is known as 'Pittapapra' in Ayurveda, and 'Shahtaraa' in Unani is used to treat various ailments like indigestion, vomiting, fever, and fatigue. It is showing properties like anthelminthic, diuretic, diaphoretic, and blood-purifying properties. The present study is done to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the extract. Materials and Methods: The plant extract was isolated by using a Soxhlet apparatus by using ethanol as the solvent. The extract was filtered using filter paper and heated in the oven to obtain the plant extract concentrate. The o/w emulsion-based cream was evaluated for pH, viscosity, thermal stability, spreadability, antibacterial (S. aureus and E. coli) and antifungal (C. albicans and A. niger) activity. Results: The o/w emulsion-based cream formulations were found to be stable, found to have pH compatible to human skin, no skin irritancy and also have good spreadability properties, and found to be effective against bacterial cells but no considerable effect on fungal cells. Conclusion: The o/w emulsion-based cream formulations were examined for both antibacterial and antifungal activities but from the results we concluded that Fumaria parviflora Lam. is found to be effective against bacterial cells and useful in treating bacterial skin infections. This scientific paper presents two novel lanthanide metal complexes [Sm (III) and Ce (IV)] synthesized through a series of reactions involving organic ligand 8-[3- (pyrazoyl)azo]adenine (PAA). Ligand (PAA) and their complexes were characterized using various analytical techniques, including C.H.N.S elemental analysis, magnetic measurement, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, SEM, (TGA) UV-Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and HNMR analysis. These techniques were employed to support the mode of binding and geometrical structure for ligand (PAA) and its Lanthanide (Ln) complexes. The FTIR and HNMR spectral results showed that (PAA) acts as neutral N,N-bidentate with [Sm (III) and Ce (IV)]. The geometric shape of the synthesized Ln-complexes is octahedral. Also, TGA was used to investigate the thermal behavior of ligand and its complex. The results showed that the ligand dissociated in three steps, while the complex dissociated in five steps. This indicates that the complex is more thermally stable than the ligand, likely due to the formation of strong coordination bonds between the ligand and the metal ions. These findings can contribute to the understanding of the thermal stability of metal complexes and inform the design of new metal-based materials with desirable properties. Finally, this paper examined the antibacterial, antifungal and anticancer activities of PAA and its complexes. Nanotechnology has the ability to manipulate matter at the nanoscale and can revolutionize various fields such as medicine, energy, electronics, and materials science by enabling the development of new novel materials, devices, and technologies with unique properties and functionalities. This research paper describes an eco-friendly method of synthesizing silver-copper oxide bimetallic nanoparticles using domestic/industrial waste of orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) peels extract that act as the reducing and stabilising agents. The nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and characterized using various techniques such as UV–Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy—FTIR, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy—EDX, X-ray diffraction—XRD, and field emission scanning electron microscopy—FESEM. Further synthesised bimetallic nanoparticles were used to evaluate the antibacterial, antioxidant and catalytic activity. Results exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity, dye degradation of methyl red, phenol red, and eosin yellow, and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Ag–CuO bimetallic nanoparticles displayed a higher scavenging activity of 63.87% at 500 µg/ml. Maximum amount of degradation was obtained in case of phenol red dye i.e., 88.4% and in 30 min. Bacillus subtilis showed the highest zone of inhibition (18 mm) at 200 µl/ml of nanoparticles concertation. Therefore, Ag–CuO bimetallic nanoparticles synthesised from the orange peels might serve as a novel antioxidant, antibacterial and catalytic agent in the treatment of wastewater contaminated with dyes. In this paper, CdS (CS), graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-blended CdS (GCS and rCS) NPs are studied for their photocatalytic, electrochemical, and antimicrobial properties. CS and GCS were synthesized by chemical precipitation method. Centella asiatica leaf extract was used to produce rCS in one pot. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed hexagonal crystal structure for all the samples. All samples had Cd-S bond vibrations confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. Photoluminescence (PL) intensities of CdS quenched with GO and rGO decoration. GCS and rCS NPs exhibited strong optical absorption with reduced band gaps. Photodegradation efficiency of CS against CR dye increased from 84 to 90 % for GCS and 96 % for rCS. Specific capacitance of CdS increased with GO, rGO incorporation and the rGO-blended CdS NPs showed better electrochemical properties. Antibacterial tests performed with different concentrations (20, 40, 60 and 80 mg) of CS, GCS and rCS NPs confirmed that GCS and rCS resisted the tested B. subtilis and E. coli bacteria effectively better than CS, with rCS showing more resistance. The cost of treatment of antibiotic-resistant pathogens is on the level of tens of billions of dollars at the moment. It is of special interest to reduce or solve this problem using antimicrobial coatings, especially in hospitals or other healthcare facilities. The bacteria can transfer from medical staff or contaminated surfaces to patients. In this paper, we focused our attention on the antibacterial and antibiofouling activities of two types of photodynamic polyurethane composite films doped with carbon polymerized dots (CPDs) and fullerene C60. Detailed atomic force, electrostatic force and viscoelastic microscopy revealed topology, nanoelectrical and nanomechanical properties of used fillers and composites. A relationship between the electronic structure of the nanocarbon fillers and the antibacterial and antibiofouling activities of the composites was established. Thorough spectroscopic analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was conducted for both composite films, and it was found that both of them were potent antibacterial agents against nosocomial bacteria (Klebsiela pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonela enterica, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus epidermis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Antibiofouling testing of composite films indicated that the CPDs/PU composite films eradicated almost completely the biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus and about 50% of Escherichia coli biofilms. The degradation of organic dye contaminants provides a promising approach for mitigating pollutants and addressing wastewater treatment. Despite the extensive research and development of various photocatalysts with the objective of effectively degrading organic pollutants, the challenge still persists. This paper introduces a facile and sustainable technique for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using kiwi fruit peel, as a bio-waste resource. A comprehensive analysis of the AgNPs was conducted using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The observation of a color change and measurement of UV–vis absorbance at 435 nm confirmed the development of AgNPs. FE-SEM examination demonstrated that AgNPs have homogeneous distribution of cubic structure with 10 to 70 nm. The AgNPs demonstrated photocatalytic degradation potential of 94.2% for Congo red (CR) under visible light irradiation. Additionally, synthesized AgNPs exhibited concentration depended bactericidal activity. In conclusion, as synthesized AgNPs can efficiently purify wastewater and suppress pathogens due to their strong degrading activity, reusability, and antibacterial actions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nylon fabric possesses high strength, good resilience, abrasion resistance and moisture absorption which is widely used as the textile materials. However, there are some potential safety risks due to its high flammability, poor heat and light stability, and melt-dripping phenomenon during combustion. In this paper, nylon fabric was multifunctional modified by bio-based tannic acid (TA) and phytic acid (PA) to obtain flame retardancy, ultraviolet protection and antibacterial properties simultaneously. The multifunctional coating was constructed on nylon fabric using the simple finishing method. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of treated nylon fabric significantly increased to 39%, and its dripping was completely eliminated, showing excellent flame retardancy and anti-dripping property. In order to improve the washing durability of the multifunctional coating, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was introduced to form covalent and ionic bonds with TA, PA and nylon fabric to enhance the interfacial binding strength. After four times washing, the LOI value of treated fabric was still higher than 29% showing good washing durability. The antibacterial rates of treated nylon fabric against E. coli and S. aureus were higher than 99%. And the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) value of treated nylon fabric increased from 12.105 to 264.82, showing excellent antibacterial and ultraviolet protection properties. Nonwoven fabrics with appropriate hydrophilicity and potent antimicrobial properties hold important promise for hygiene applications. However, existing materials with certain limitations and complex manufacturing steps, along with the unavoidable use of chemicals in the process, are limited to a certain extent in terms of the balance between comfort and antimicrobial properties. In this paper, a polyimide (PI) fiber was reported to be used for the preparation of PI composite nonwoven fabrics (5-P), which can effectively enhance the surface hydrodynamic and antimicrobial properties of the nonwoven by a one-step plasma treatment on one side. After treatment, the one-sided water contact angle (WCA) changed from 121.5° to 68.5°, and the permeation volume from 0.7 to 2.1 g, with a relative increase of 181.9%. Meanwhile, the reverse osmosis amount was only 0.5 g, achieving rapid permeation while keeping a low reverse osmosis amount. The antimicrobial experiment showed that plasma-treated 5-P exhibited 64.3% and 91.6% inhibitory properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Notably, the production process of antimicrobial 5-P was fast and efficient without the addition of any chemicals. This method has great potential for the industrial preparation of antimicrobial comfort materials on a large scale, which is competitive in the medical, sanitary materials, and personal care fields. In recent years, Ag nanoparticle (Ag NP)-loaded antibacterial dressings have attracted much attention in high-level medical dressings. However, the high cytotoxicity of Ag NP has always been a problem. In this paper, we examined the improvement of antibacterial activity of berberine hydrochloride (BBR) with Ag NP, the results showed that the combined use of BBR and Ag NP can effectively reduce the dosage of Ag NP while ensuring the inhibition of bacterial growth, thus an intermediate layer dressing containing combined drugs were prepared. At the same time, the top dressing of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solid film and the PVA bottom dressings with three kinds of leakage structures were prepared by 3D printing technology. Three kinds of PVA bottom dressings showed high quality consistency, and the greater the number of leak holes, the higher the porosity value of the dressing, while the swelling ratio value of the bottom layer dressing with three holes was the lowest. Finally, three types of BBR-Ag NP composite antibacterial dressings (3D-BBR-Ag NP) can be obtained by self-assembling of the top dressing, the intermediate layer dressing, and the bottom dressings with three kinds of leakage structures. The cumulative drug release results showed that dressing with more holes had a faster drug release rate compared to the other two ones with fewer leakage holes. Besides, five drug release kinetic models were used to investigate the cumulative BBR release profiles for three types of 3D-BBR-Ag NP. And the three types of composite dressings showed strong antibacterial activity after 6 h of cultivation with staphylococcus aureus. The study showed that the antibacterial activity of the self-assembled dressing prepared by combination of BBR with Ag NP can be improved, and the drug release rate of the hydrogel dressing can be flexibly controlled through 3D printing technology. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have involved a lot of consideration owing to their distinctive features. The ZnO NPs can be described as particularly synthesized mineral salts via nanotechnology, varying in size from 1 to 100 nm, while zinc oxide (ZnO), it is an inorganic substrate of zinc (Zn). The Zn is a critical trace element necessary for various biological and physiological processes in the body. Studies have revealed ZnO NPs' efficient immuno-modulatory, growth-promoting, and antimicrobial properties in poultry birds. They offer increased bioavailability as compared to their traditional sources, producing better results in terms of productivity and welfare and consequently reducing ecological harm in the poultry sector. However, they have also been reported for their toxicological effects, which are size, shape, concentration, and exposure route dependent. The investigations done so far have yielded inconsistent results, therefore, a lot of additional studies and research are required to clarify the harmful consequences of ZnO NPs and to bring them to a logical end. This review explores an overview of efficient possible role of ZnO NPs, while comparing them with other nutritional Zn sources, in the poultry industry, primarily as dietary supplements that effect the growth, health, and performance of the birds. In addition to the anti-bacterial mechanisms of ZnO NPs and their promising role as antifungal, and anti-colloidal agent, this paper also covers the toxicological mechanisms of ZnO NPs and their consequent toxicological hazards to vital organs and the reproductive system of poultry birds. This study comprehensively reviewed the types, properties and potential applications of copper materials for caries management. Two researchers independently searched English publications using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. They screened the titles and abstracts of publications presenting original studies for review. They included 34 publications on copper materials, which were categorized as copper and copper alloy materials (13/34, 38%), copper salt materials (13/34, 38%) and copper oxide materials (8/34, 24%). All reported copper materials inhibited the growth of cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. The materials could be doped into topical agents, restorative fillers, dental adhesives, drinking water, dental implants, orthodontic appliances, mouthwash and sugar. Most publications (29/34, 83%) were laboratory studies, five (5/34, 14%) were animal studies and only one paper (1/34, 3%) was clinical research. In conclusion, copper and copper alloy materials, copper salt materials and copper oxide materials have an antimicrobial property that inhibits cariogenic bacteria and Candida albicans. These copper materials may be incorporated into dental materials and even drinking water and sugar for caries prevention. Most publications are laboratory studies. Infectious diseases are a global challenge today. One preventive measure is to maintain and improve humans’ immunity. Many people consume sungkai, a medicinal plant that is believed to cut down the exposure of severe covid-19 because it is related to antioxidant and antibacterial activity. This research investigated the antioxidant and antimicrobe agents of fungal endophyte extracts from the stem bark of sungkai. Endophytic fungal was isolated from the fresh tissue of the stem bark of sungkai and identified morphologically. The antioxidant of the endophytic fungi extract was tested with the DPPH, and antibacterial agent was tested by using the paper disc diffusion method. Molecular identification of endophytic fungi was done to extract that showed the most potential antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The pure compounds were isolated by chromatographic techniques. Structural determinations of the compounds were accomplished using a spectroscopic method, comprising 1D and 2D NMR. Twenty isolates of fungal endophyte were found residing in the stem bark of sungkai, specifically RB1-RB20. Isolates RB4 and RB6 showed the most potential antioxidant and antibacterial activity and were identified molecularly. The results of molecular identification showed that RB4 and RB6 were Curvularia intermedia and Colletotrichum cliviicola. Based on the spectroscopic analysis, the compounds identified from the two fungi were the different compound, specifically 3-hydroxy-4(hydroxy(4-hydroxyphenyl)methyl)-ɣ-butyrolactone (1) and 5-hydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)-2H-pyran-2-on (2). Compound 1 and 2 showed antibacterial and antioxidant in strong to moderate.
