A pre-treatment process was evaluated in this work for wastewater from paper recycling using microwave technology followed by rapid precipitation of contaminants through centrifugation. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to analyze and optimize the turbidity values. Thirty experimental runs were utilized including microwave (MW) power, duration, centrifuge time, and centrifuge speed as input variables, generated by the Central Composite Full Design (CCFD) approach. The experimental turbidity ranged from 8.1 to 19.7 NTU, while predicted values ranged from 8.4 to 19.7 NTU by ANN. The ANN model showed a robust prediction performance with low mean squared error values during training and testing. Moreover, high R2 values showed a remarkable agreement between the experimental observations and ANN predictions. The results obtained from the input values (A:150.00, B:60.00, C:15.00, D:30.00) of sample 2, which gave the lowest turbidity value, showed the most removal of pollution. The results obtained from the input values (A:250.00, B:60.00, C:7.00, D:20.00) of sample 30, which gave the highest turbidity value, showed the least removal of pollution. The results showed that increasing RPM and time of the centrifugation process significantly affected the removal of pollution in wastewater.

Evaluating the long-term influence of academic papers in the early stage after publication is crucial for research management and decision-making. Although the total number of citations has been considered as a valid indicator to measure the academic influence of papers, there are still some bottleneck problems in predicting future citation counts. Firstly, it remains a challenging task to select the reasonable features due to the diversity of model features. Secondly, some prediction models are overly complex and their defects may cause prediction bias or even errors. Finally, the most important thing is that very few models possess long-term predictive ability. This paper proposes a prediction model that can provide an early evaluation of the long-term citations, or the long-term influence, of academic papers. The model uses features available immediately after publication or after a certain period of time. Taking academic papers in Information Science and Library Science as our experimental subject, we train the model using three machine learning algorithms and find that the artificial neural network performs satisfactorily. Our findings may offer guidance for research management and decision-making.

This paper proposes an efficient optimization method for the stacking sequence of composite pressure vessels based on the joint application of finite element analysis (FEA), artificial neural network (ANN), and genetic algorithm (GA). The composite pressure vessel has many winding layers and varied angles, and the stacking sequence of the composite pressure vessel affects its performance. It is essential to carry out the optimal design of the stacking sequence. The experimental cost for optimal design of composite pressure vessels is high, and numerical simulation is time-consuming. ANN is used to predict the fiber direction stress of composite pressure vessels, which replaces FEA in the optimization process of GA effectively. In addition, the optimization efficiency of the optimization method proposed in this paper can be improved significantly when the neural network model is employed. The optimization results show that the peak stress in the fiber direction can be reduced by 37.3% with the design burst pressure. The burst pressure of the composite pressure vessel can be increased by 13.4% by optimizing the stacking sequence of composite pressure vessels while keeping the number of plies and the winding angle unchanged. In this paper, we propose a learning model for tracking the isolines of fluid based on the physical properties of particles in particle-based fluid simulations. Our method involves analyzing which weights, closely related to surface tracking among the various physical properties of fluid particles, are significant. These weights are used as input values for the learning algorithm, enabling relatively accurate isoline tracking. In addition, compared to existing learning models such as linear regression, LSTM (long short-term memory), and learning representation (1-layer) models, our method obtained superior surface tracking results without accumulating errors. By using our proposed network structure to track the fluid surface, it learns and predicts values derived from existing fluid simulation algorithms, eliminating the need for computational processes for level-set values and enabling real-time surface tracking. As the scale of the simulation increases, our method significantly reduces the time and resources consumed compared to traditional methods and can track the fluid surface without additional resource consumption. Furthermore, due to our method's simple network structure, the time consumed in the initial process of loading the model into memory is faster than models such as CNN and LSTM. Our proposed model occupies less than 30 kb of storage space, making it suitable for use in middleware. This research paper explores the realm of fault detection in distributed motors through the vision of the Internet of electrical drives. This paper aims at employing artificial neural networks supported by the data collected by the Internet of distributed devices. Cross-verification of results offers reliable diagnosis of industrial motor faults. The proposed methodology involves the development of a cyber–physical system architecture and mathematical modeling framework for efficient fault detection. The mathematical model is designed to capture the intricate relationships within the cyber–physical system, incorporating the dynamic interactions between distributed motors and their edge controllers. Fast Fourier transform is employed for signal processing, enabling the extraction of meaningful frequency features that serve as indicators of potential faults. The artificial neural network based fault detection system is integrated with the solution, utilizing its ability to learn complex patterns and adapt to varying motor conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed framework and model is demonstrated through experimental results. Detecting instruments in a music signal is often used in database indexing, song annotation, and creating applications for musicians and music producers. Therefore, effective methods that automatically solve this issue need to be created. In this paper, the mentioned task is solved using mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and various architectures of artificial neural networks. The authors' contribution to the development of automatic instrument detection covers the methods used, particularly the neural network architectures and the voting committees created. All these methods were evaluated, and the results are presented and discussed in the paper. The proposed automatic instrument detection methods show that the best classification quality was obtained for an extensive model, which is the so-called committee of voting classifiers. This paper presents a groundbreaking control strategy for a bidirectional battery charger that allows power to be injected into the smart grid while simultaneously compensating for the grid's reactive power using an electric vehicle battery. An artificial neural network (ANN) controller is utilized for precise design to ensure optimal performance with minimal error. The ANN technique is applied to generate sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) for a bidirectional AC–DC inverter, with the entire algorithm simulated in MATLAB Simulink.The core innovation of this study is the creation of the ANN algorithm, which supports grid compensation using electric vehicle batteries, an approach termed "vehicle-for-grid". Additionally, the paper details the PCB circuit design of the system controlled by the DSP F28379D board, which was tested on a three-phase motor. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the proposed ANN algorithm is approximately 1.85 % , compared to the MPC algorithm's THD of about 2.85 % . This indicates that the proposed algorithm is more effective in terms of the quality of the power injected into the grid. Drinking water treatment is a complex system of chemical, physical, and biological processes that is highly dependent on water quality and the design of the treatment process. To create decision-support tools, the prediction of key performance indicators, such as settled water turbidity, is needed. A variety of data-driven modeling techniques is available to formulate such predictions. Datadriven models provide valuable tools for formulating predictions where there is a lack of mechanistic models or the mechanisms are not fully understood, as in surface water treatment. The objective of this paper is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of various data-driven techniques for this important, but difficult, problem. Recognizing that the size and quality of the dataset are most critical in this kind of analysis, this work uses one of the largest datasets used in this context consisting of 2,527 vectors of water quality and operational data (2,527 X nine data frame) from a full-scale water treatment plant. The paper constructs and compares the performance of the several data-driven models including k-nearest neighbor (KNN) regression, polynomial regression, and artificial neural networks (ANN). Based on test scaled root mean square error (RMSE), the ANN model was the most predictive (0.124). Similarly, the ANN model had the best predictive performance based on total scaled RMSE (0.086). These results show that ANNs have a high potential for the development of a future decision support system in selecting appropriate coagulant doses based on settled water turbidity. The retinal impulse signal is the basic carrier of visual information. It records the distribution of light on the retina. However, its direct conversion to a scene image is difficult due to the nonlinear characteristics of its distribution. Therefore, the use of artificial neural network to reconstruct the scene from retinal spikes has become an important research area. This paper proposes the architecture of a neural network based on vector quantization, where the feature vectors of spike trains are extracted, compressed, and stored using a feature extraction and compression network. During the decoding process, the nearest neighbour search method is used to find the nearest feature vector corresponding to each feature vector in the feature map. Finally, a reconstruction network is used to decode a new feature map composed of matching feature vectors to obtain a visual scene. This paper also verifies the impact of vector quantization on the characteristics of pulse signals by comparing experiments and visualizing the characteristics before and after vector quantization. The network delivers promising performance when evaluated on different datasets, demonstrating that this research is of great significance for improving relevant applications in the fields of retinal image processing and artificial intelligence. This study presents a numerical approach to the design and optimization of centrifugal impellers used in the pumps of active thermal control systems of spacecraft. Although launch costs have shrunk in the last decade, the performance requirements, such as efficiency and reliability, have increased, as such systems are required to work up to 15 years, depending on the mission. To that effect, our paper deals with the first step in this pump design, namely the hydraulic optimization of the impeller. Constructively, this type of impeller allows for certain balancing systems and labyrinth seals to be applied in a more effective way, as well as allowing for additive manufacturing methods to be used—however, details regarding these aspects are beyond the scope of the current paper. By combining empirical formulas, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, and artificial neural networks (ANNs), the research focuses on achieving high efficiency and fast manufacturing. A series of geometries have been sized and validated using steady-state RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations, leading to the identification of the most efficient configuration. Subsequent optimization using an ANN resulted in a refined impeller design with notable improvements in hydraulic performance: a 3.55% increase in efficiency and a 7.9% increase in head. Key parameters influencing impeller performance, including blade number, incidence, and backsweep angles, are identified. This approach offers a comprehensive method to address the evolving requirements of space missions and contributes to the advancement of centrifugal pump technology in the space domain. There are various techniques for separating natural gas liquid (NGL) from natural gas, one of which is refrigeration. In this method, the temperature is reduced in the dew point adjustment stage to condense the NGLs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a methodology for optimizing the NGLs production process by determining the optimal values for specific set-points such as temperature and pressure in various vessels and equipment. The methodology also focuses on minimizing energy consumption during the NGL production process. To do this, this research defines a multi-objective problem and presents a hybrid algorithm, including a genetic algorithm (NSGA II) and artificial neural network (ANN) system. We solve the defined multi-objective problem using NSGA II. In order to design a tool that is a decision-helper for selecting the appropriate set-points, the ability of the ANN algorithm along with multi-objective optimization is evaluated. We implement our proposed algorithm in an Iranian chemical factory, specifically the NGL plant, which separates NGL from natural gas, as a case study for this article. Electricity consumption in buildings is one of the major causes of energy usage and knowledge of this can help building owners and users increase energy efficiency and conservation efforts. For Pacific Island countries, building electricity demand data is not readily accessible or available for constructing models to predict electricity demand. This paper starts to fill this gap by studying the case of schools in Fiji. The aim of the paper is to assess the factors affecting electricity demand for grid-connected Fijian schools and use this assessment to build mathematical models (multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN)) to predict electricity consumption. The average grid-connected electricity demand in kWh/year was 1411 for early childhood education schools, 5403 for primary schools, and 23,895 for secondary schools. For predicting electricity demand (ED) for all grid-connected schools, the stepwise MLR model shows that taking logarithm transformations on both the dependent variable and independent variables (number of students, lights, and air conditioning systems) yields statistically significant independent variables with an R2 value of 73.3% and RMSE of 0.2248. To improve the predicting performance, ANN models were constructed on both the natural form of variables and transformed variables. The optimum ANN model had an R2 value of 95.3% and an RMSE of 59.4 kWh/year. The findings of this study can assist schools in putting measures in place to reduce their electricity demand, associated costs, and carbon footprint, as well as help government ministries make better-informed policies. The present review paper addresses the increasing interest in the application of machine learning (ML) algorithms in the assessment of the fatigue response of additively manufactured (AM) metal alloys. This review aims to systematically collect, categorize, and analyze relevant research papers in this domain. The most commonly used ML algorithms are presented, discussing their specific relevance to the fatigue modeling of AM metal alloys. A detailed analysis of the most relevant input features used in the literature to predict the main parameters related to the fatigue response is provided. Each work has been analyzed to highlight its strengths and peculiarities, thereby offering insights into novel methodologies and approaches for addressing critical challenges within this field. Particular attention is dedicated to the role of defects and the related size‐effect, as they strongly influence the fatigue response. Saltwater intrusion is an essential problem in estuaries that can threaten the ecological environment, especially in high-salinity situations. Therefore in this paper, traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling are applied to forecast overall and high salinity in the Lower Scheldt Estuary, Belgium. Mutual information (MI) and conditional mutual information (CMI) are used to select optimal driving forces (DFs), with the daily discharge (Q), daily water temperature (WT), and daily sea level (SL) selected as the main DFs. Next, we analyze whether applying a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to remove the noise from the original time series improves the results. Here, the DWT is applied in Signal-hybrid (SH) and Within-hybrid (WH) frameworks. Both the MLR and ANN models demonstrate satisfactory performance in daily overall salinity simulation over the Scheldt Estuary. The relatively complex ANN models outperform MLR because of their capabilities of capturing complex interactions. Because the nonlinear relationship between salinity and DFs is variable at different locations, the performance of the MLR models in the midstream region is far inferior to that in the downstream region during spring and winter. The results reveal that the application of DWT enhances simulation of both overall and high salinity in this region, especially for the ANN model with the WH framework. With the effect of Q decline or SL rise, the salinity in the middle Scheldt Estuary increases more significantly, and the ANN models are more sensitive to these perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The energy transition towards a low-emission matrix has motivated efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the transportation sector. The growth of the electric mobility market has been consistent in recent years. In Brazil, there has been an accelerated growth in the sales rate of new electric (and hybrid) vehicles (EVs). Fiscal incentives provided by governments, along with the reduction in vehicle costs, are factors contributing to the exponential growth of the EV fleet—creating a favorable environment for the dissemination of new technologies and enabling the participation of players from sectors such as battery manufacturing and charging stations. Considering the international context, the E-Lounge R&D joint initiative aims to evaluate different strategies to economically enable the electric mobility market, exploring EV charging service sales by energy distribution utility companies in Brazil. This work describes the step-by-step development of an ideal model of a charging hub and discusses its operation based on a real deployment, as well as its associated technical and economic feasibility. Using EV charging data based on the E-Lounge's operational behavior, an artificial neural network (ANN) is applied to forecast future energy consumption to each EV charging station. This paper also presents an economic analysis of the E-Lounge case study, which can contribute to proposals for electric vehicle charging ecosystems in the context of smart energy systems. Based on the operational results collected, as well as considering equipment usage projections, it is possible to make EV charging enterprises feasible, even when high investments in infrastructure and equipment (charging stations and battery storage systems) are necessary, since the net present value is positive and the payback period is 4 years. The potential of unconventional hydrocarbon resources has been unlocked since the hydraulic fracturing technique in combination with long horizontal wells was applied to develop this type of reservoir economically. The design and optimization of the fracturing treatment and the stimulated reservoir volume and the forecasting of production performance are crucial for the development and management of such resources. However, the production performance of tight gas reservoirs is a complicated nonlinear problem, described by many parameters loaded with uncertainty. The complexity of the problem influences and inspires the sophistication of the solution to be used. This paper proposed an artificial network model that allows for fast, extended, and accurate analyses of the production performance of multiple fractured unconventional tight gas wells. In the comprehensive approach developed, the reservoir rock parameters, the drainage area, and the hydraulic fracture parameters are treated as a variable input to the model. The analysis is no longer constrained by fixed "shoes box" geometry, and the values of the parameters defining the reservoir and stimulated volume are not limited to a few discrete values. The numerical experiment used to construct a database for model development was designed using a genetically optimized Latin hypercube sampling technique. A special approach was used in the preparation of "blind data", which are crucial for truly reliable model verification. In the result, a developed tool offers an extended rock-fluid description, flexible model, and stimulated reservoir volume dimensioning and parameterization, as well as a high degree of applicability in sensitivity analysis and/or optimization. As semiconductor performance improves through advanced package designs, it becomes important to consider both thermal and mechanical properties. This study has introduced a numerical method that takes into account both thermal and mechanical fluxes to construct thermal and mechanical property maps for practical application in semiconductor engineering. Furthermore, this paper investigated the relationship between the two properties using the constructed property maps in commercially available semiconductor packages. Owing to the complexity of packaging design patterns, a coupled isoparametric mapping and machine learning (ML) method was introduced to investigate their effects. The model then determines and investigates the anisotropic equivalent thermal and mechanical properties of the commercialized semiconductor packages with complex pattern designs, according to the package materials, volume fractions of each material, and design patterns. This approach pursues more sophistication and practicality compared to simplified composite structure property evaluation models. Additionally, all processes in the algorithm are automated based on ML methods, making them practically applicable in the semiconductor industry. The study shows that there is a strong correlation between the thermal and mechanical characteristics in the complex package patterns. This relationship was able to form a fairly clear category based on the shape of the dielectric band because the dielectric band had significantly different effects on the thermal and mechanical fluxes. The study discussed the physical implications of the similarities and differences between the two behaviors and validated the results of the equivalent properties through finite element (FE) analysis. Finally, the study cross-validates the relationship by showing that information from one flux behavior can be used to predict the other based on the ML method. In contrast to cumbersome benchtop spectrometers, integrated on-chip spectrometers are well-suited for portable applications in health monitoring and environmental sensing. In this paper, we have developed an on-chip spectrometer with a programmable silicon photonic filter by simply using parallel cascaded micro-ring resonators (MRs). By altering the transmission spectrum of the filter, multiple and diverse sampling of the input spectrum is achieved. Then, combined with an artificial neural network (ANN) model, the incident spectrum is reconstructed from the sampled signals. Each MR is coupled to adjacent ones, and the phase shifts within each MR can be independently tuned. Through dynamic programming of the phases of these MRs, sampling functions featuring diverse characteristics are obtained based on a single programmable filter with an adjustable number of sampling channels. This eliminates the need for a filter array, significantly reducing the area of the on-chip reconstructive spectrometer. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design can achieve the reconstruction of continuous and sparse spectra within the wavelength range of 1450 nm to 1650 nm, with a tunable resolution ranging from 2 nm to 0.2 nm, depending on the number of sampling states employed. Obtaining mathematical models of nonlinear cyber–physical systems for use in controller design is both difficult and time consuming. In this paper, an ANN-based method is proposed to design a controller for a nonlinear system that does not require a mathematical model. The developed ANN-based control algorithm is implemented directly on a real-time field controller, and its performance is evaluated without the use of auxiliary devices, such as PCs or workstations. By executing machine learning algorithms on local devices or embedded systems, edge artificial intelligence (Edge AI) with transfer learning gives priority to processing data at the source, minimizing the necessity for continuous connectivity to remote servers. The control algorithm was developed using the Matlab Simulink environment. The first and second ANNs were cascaded, wherein the first ANN computes the appropriate pressure signal for the given displacement, while the second predicts the force based on the pressure value from the first ANN. Subsequently, the ANN-based control algorithm was converted to SCL code using the Simulink PLC Coder and deployed on the PLC for operation. The algorithm was tested using two different scenarios. The conducted tests demonstrated the successful prediction of pressure signals corresponding to the targeted displacement values and accurate estimation of force values. In this paper, the dispersion characteristics of slotted photonic crystal waveguides (SPCWs) have been estimated for any arbitrary set of structural parameters using machine learning-based artificial neural network (ANN). The machine learning-based technique yields faster solutions of the three-dimensional eigenvalue equations, which otherwise require substantial time using the conventional plane wave expansion (PWE)-based numerical simulations. Most importantly, the novel contribution of the work lies in estimating the structural parameters of the SPCWs from the given specifications of the dispersion characteristics through an inverse computation. A simple feed-forward neural network has been employed for both the forward and inverse estimations. The computation performances using both the ANN model and PWE simulations are analyzed and compared. The research offers significant implications for the field of photonics. By employing machine learning techniques, particularly ANNs, researchers and engineers can swiftly and efficiently analyze the dispersion properties of SPCWs, facilitating rapid prototyping and optimization of photonic devices. The rising population of millennials, coupled with Digital Assistants (DA) and online purchasing trends among consumers have gained increasing attention by global marketers. The study evaluates the influence of DA attributes on the purchasing intention (PUI) of millennials. A combined approach of PLS-SEM, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) is used to predict the PUI of 345 millennials. Also, multi-group analysis is employed to uncover the influence of gender on the relationship between PUI and DA attributes. The findings suggest that DA attributes may amplify purchasing intention among millennials, especially through perceived interactivity and anthropomorphism. Further, the moderating role of gender was found significant on the inter-relationship of perceived interactivity and PUI. This research is a pioneer study in the area of artificial intelligence, conversational commerce, DA and AI-powered chatbots. This paper introduces a sequential approximate optimization method that combines the finite element method (FEM), dynamic differential evolution (DDE), and artificial neural network (ANN) surrogate models. The developed method is applied to address two optimization problems. The first involves metamaterial design optimization for metal sheet architecture with binary design variables. The second pertains to optimizing process parameters in multi-stage metal forming, where the discrete nature arises owing to changing tool geometries across stages. This process is highly non-linear, accumulating contact, geometric, and material non-linear effects discretely through forming stages. The efficacy of the proposed optimization method, utilizing ANN surrogate models, is compared with traditionally used polynomial response surface (PRS) surrogate models, primarily based on low-order polynomials. Efficient learning of ANN surrogate models is facilitated through the FEM and Python integration framework. Initial data for surrogate model training are collected via Latin hypercube sampling and FEM simulations. DDE is employed for sequential approximate optimization, optimizing ANN or PRS surrogate models to determine optimal design variables. PRS surrogate models encounter challenges in dealing with non-linear changes in sequential approximate optimization concerning discrete characteristics such as binary design variables and discrete non-linear behavior found in multi-stage metal forming processes. Owing to the discrete nature, PRS surrogate models require more data and iterations for optimal design variables. In contrast, ANN surrogate models adeptly predict non-linear behavior through the activation function's characteristics. In the optimization problem of metal sheet architecture for design Target C, the ANN surrogate model required an average of 4.6 times fewer iterations to satisfy stopping criteria compared with the PRS surrogate model. Furthermore, in the optimization of multi-stage deep drawing processes, the ANN surrogate model required an average of 6.1 times fewer iterations to satisfy stopping criteria compared with the PRS surrogate model. As a result, the sequential global optimization method utilizing ANN surrogate models achieves optimal design variables with fewer iterations than PRS surrogate models. Patient-specific 3D models of the human mandible are finding increasing utility in medical fields such as oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, dentistry, and forensic sciences. The efficient creation of personalized 3D bone models poses a key challenge in these applications. Existing solutions often rely on 3D statistical models of human bone, offering advantages in rapid bone geometry adaptation and flexibility by capturing a range of anatomical variations, but also a disadvantage in terms of reduced precision in representing specific shapes. Considering this, the proposed parametric model allows for precise manipulation using morphometric parameters acquired from medical images. This paper highlights the significance of employing the parametric model in the creation of a personalized bone model, exemplified through a case study targeting mandibular prognathism reconstruction. A personalized model is described as 3D point cloud determined through the utilization of series of parametric functions, determined by the application of geometrical morphometrics, morphology properties, and artificial neural networks in the input dataset of human mandible samples. With 95.05% of the personalized model's surface area displaying deviations within −1.00–1.00 mm relative to the input polygonal model, and a maximum deviation of 2.52 mm, this research accentuates the benefits of the parametric approach, particularly in the preoperative planning of mandibular deformity surgeries. Neonatal brain monitoring in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) requires a continuous review of the spontaneous cortical activity, i.e., the electroencephalograph (EEG) background activity. This needs development of bedside methods for an automated assessment of the EEG background activity. In this paper, we present development of the key components of a neonatal EEG background classifier, starting from the visual background scoring to classifier design, and finally to possible bedside visualization of the classifier results. A dataset with 13,200 5-minute EEG epochs (8-- 16 channels) from 27 infants with birth asphyxia was used for classifier training after scoring by two independent experts. We tested three classifier designs based on 98 computational features, and their performance was assessed with respect to scoring system, pre- and post-processing of labels and outputs, choice of channels, and visualization in monitor displays. The optimal solution achieved an overall classification accuracy of 97% with a range across subjects of 81--100%. We identified a set of 23 features that make the classifier highly robust to the choice of channels and missing data due to artefact rejection. Our results showed that an automated bedside classifier of EEG background is achievable, and we publish the full classifier algorithm to allow further clinical replication and validation studies. Unsteady aerodynamic prediction at high angles of attack is of great importance to the design and development of advanced fighters. In this paper, a weighted feature fusion model (WFFM) that combines the state-space model and neural networks is proposed to build an unsteady aerodynamic model for the precise simulation and control of post-stall maneuvers. In the proposed model, the influences of the physical model on neural networks are considered and adjusted by introducing a standardization layer and a new weighting method. A long short-term memory (LSTM) network is used to fuse two mappings: one from flight states to aerodynamic loads, and the other from low-fidelity data to high-fidelity data. Data from wind tunnel oscillation experiments at high angles of attack using a new kind of wire-driven parallel robot and the traditional tail support are used for verifying the proposed aerodynamic model. The output of the WFFM is also compared with predictions from other models, such as the state-space model, single LSTM model, and feature fusion model not including a feature weighting layer. Results demonstrate improved accuracy of the proposed model in the interpolation and extrapolation tests. Furthermore, the WFFM is applied to the flight simulation of F-16 with different control inputs. This paper presents a new approach for the online estimation of stator and rotor resistance of induction motors for speed sensorless vector-controlled drives, using feed-forward artificial neural networks with advanced adaptive learning rates. For the rotor resistance estimation, a neural network model based on rotor speed and stator currents is developed. The rotor flux linkages acquired from the voltage model are compared with the neural network model. The feed-forward neural network employs an adaptive learning rate as the function of the obtained error during training for quick convergence with minimal estimation error. A two-layered neural network model based on the stator voltage and current equations is developed for the stator resistance estimation. The d-q axes stator currents obtained from the developed model are compared with the acquired d-q axes stator currents. For the fast convergence with minimal estimation error, an adaptive learning rate as the function of error is adopted during training. Furthermore, the neural network estimates the induction motor's speed. The simulation and experimental results justify that the developed algorithms track variation in the resistances quickly and precisely along with the speed as compared with the conventional constant learning rate algorithm, leading to reliable operation of the drive. Quantum neural networks (QNNs) leverage the strengths of both quantum computing and neural networks, offering solutions to challenges that are often beyond the reach of traditional neural networks. QNNs are being used in areas such as computer games, function approximation, and big data processing. Moreover, quantum neural network algorithms are finding utility in social network modeling, associative memory systems, and automatic control mechanisms. Nevertheless, ensuring the reliability of quantum neural networks is crucial as it directly influences network performance and stability. To investigate the reliability of quantum neural networks, this paper proposes a methodology wherein operator measurements are performed on the final states of the output quantum states of a quantum neural network. The proximity of these measurements to the target value is compared, and the fidelity value, combined with a quantum gate operation, is utilized to assess the reliability of the quantum neural network. Through network training, the results demonstrate that, under optimal parameters, both the fidelity of the final state measurement value and the target value of the model approach are approximately equal to 1. The main goal of this work is to combine the usage of the numerical homogenization technique for determining the effective properties of representative volume elements with artificial neural networks. The effective properties are defined according to the classical laminate theory. The purpose is to create and train a rapid surrogate model for the quick calculation of the mechanical properties of hollow concrete slabs. First, the homogenization algorithm was implemented, which determines membrane, bending and transverse shearing properties of a given parametrized hollow-core precast slab reinforced with steel bars. The algorithm uses the finite element mesh but does not require a formal solution of the finite element method problem. Second, the learning and training artificial intelligence framework was created and fed with a dataset obtained by optimal Latin hypercube sampling. In the study, a multilayer perceptron type of artificial neural network was used. This allows for obtaining rapid calculations of the effective properties of a particular hollow-core precast slab by using a surrogate model. In the paper, it has been proven that such a model, obtained via complex numerical calculations, gives a very accurate estimation of the properties and can be used in many practical tasks, such as optimization problems or computer-aided design decisions. Pore pressure prediction is a critical parameter in petroleum engineering and is essential for safe drilling operations and wellbore stability. However, traditional methods for pore pressure prediction, such as empirical correlations, require selecting appropriate input parameters and may not capture the complex relationships between these parameters and the pore pressure. In contrast, artificial neural networks (ANNs) can learn complex relationships between inputs and outputs from data. This paper presents a new empirical correlation for predicting pore pressure using ANNs. The proposed method uses 42 datasets of well log data, including temperature, porosity, and water saturation, to train ANNs for pore pressure prediction. The trained model, with the Bayesian regularization backpropagation function, predicts the pore pressure with an average absolute percentage error (AAPE) and correlation coefficient (R) of 4.22% and 0.875, respectively. The trained ANN is then used to develop a new empirical correlation that relates pore pressure to the input parameters considering the weights and biases of the optimized ANN model. To validate the proposed correlation, it is applied to a blind dataset, where the model successfully predicts the pore pressure with an AAPE of 5.44% and R of 0.957. The results show that the proposed correlation provides accurate and reliable predictions of pore pressure. The proposed method provides a robust and accurate approach for predicting pore pressure in petroleum engineering applications, which can be used to improve drilling safety and wellbore stability. This paper presents a novel approach to estimating short-term production of wind farms, which are made up of numerous turbine generators. It harnesses the power of big data through a blend of data-driven and model-based methods. Specifically, it combines an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for immediate future predictions of wind turbine power output with a stochastic model for dependability, using Hybrid Reliability Block Diagrams. A thorough state-of-the-art review has been conducted in order to demonstrate the applicability of an ANN for non-linear stochastic problems of energy or power forecast estimation. The study leverages an innovative cluster analysis to group wind turbines and reduce the computational effort of the ANN, with a dependability model that improves the accuracy of the data-driven output estimation. Therefore, the main novelty is the employment of a hybrid model that combines an ANN with a dependability stochastic model that accounts for the realistic operational scenarios of wind turbines, including their susceptibility to random shutdowns This approach marks a significant advancement in the field, introducing a methodology which can aid the design and the power production forecast. The testing of embedded software is an increasingly significant element of the development process. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the process of testing embedded software in vehicles constitutes a significant area of both research and practical consideration, arising from the escalating complexity of these systems. This paper presents the preliminary development of the AVESYS framework which facilitates the application of open-source artificial intelligence algorithms in the embedded system testing process. The aim of this work is to evaluate its effectiveness in identifying anomalies in the test environment that could potentially affect testing results. The raw data from the test environment, mainly communication signals and readings from temperature, as well as current and voltage sensors are pre-processed and used to train machine learning models. Optimal power flow (OPF) is a crucial tool in the operation and planning of modern power systems. All-optical plasmonic switches (AOPSs) utilizing surface plasmon polaritons are well-suited for integration into photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and play a crucial role in advancing all-optical signal processing. The current AOPS design methods still rely on trial-and-error or empirical approaches. In contrast, recent deep learning (DL) advances have proven highly effective as computational tools, offering an alternative means to accelerate nanophotonics simulations. This paper proposes an innovative approach utilizing DL for spectrum prediction and inverse design of AOPS. The switches employ circular nonlinear plasmonic ring resonators (NPRRs) composed of interconnected metal–insulator–metal waveguides with a ring resonator. The NPRR switching performance is shown using the nonlinear Kerr effect. The forward model presented in this study demonstrates superior computational efficiency when compared to the finite-difference time-domain method. The model analyzes various structural parameters to predict transmission spectra with a distinctive dip. Inverse modeling enables the prediction of design parameters for desired transmission spectra. This model provides a rapid estimation of design parameters, offering a clear advantage over time-intensive conventional optimization approaches. The loss of prediction for both the forward and inverse models, when compared to simulations, is exceedingly low and on the order of 10−4. Artificial neural networks (ANN), an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technique, are both bio-inspired and nature-inspired models that mimic the operations of the human brain and the central nervous system that is capable of learning. This paper is based on a system that optimizes the performance of an uncertain unmanned nonlinear Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) aerodynamic plant called Twin Rotor MIMO System (TRMS). The pitch and yaw angles which are challenging to control and optimize in practice, are being used as the input to the Nonlinear Auto-Regressive with eXogenous (NARX) model, and eventually trained. The training features use the Matlab Deep Learning Toolbox. The NARX structure has its core in the neural networks' architecture. Data is collected from the TRMS testbed which is used to train the network. ANN as a Hybrid intelligent control strategy of ANN in combination with Pattern Search and Genetic Algorithm, is then utilized to optimize the parameters of the neural networks. At the end it was validated, tested and the optimized system run in simulation and compared with other intelligent and conventional controllers, with the proposed controller outperforming them, giving a very fast-tracking control, stable and optimal performance that satisfactorily met all our design requirements. Batteries have been considered a key element in several applications, ranging from grid-scale storage systems through electric vehicles to daily-use small-scale electronic devices. However, excessive charging and discharging will impair their capabilities and could cause their applications to fail catastrophically. Among several diagnostic indices, state-of-charge estimation is essential for evaluating a battery's capabilities. Various approaches have been introduced to reach this target, including white, gray, and black box or data-driven battery models. The main objective of this work is to provide an extensive comparison of currently highly utilized machine learning-based estimation techniques. The paper thoroughly investigates these models' architectures, computational burdens, advantages, drawbacks, and robustness validation. The evaluation's main criteria were based on measurements recorded under various operating conditions at the Energy Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL) at FIU for the eFlex 52.8 V/5.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The primary outcome of this research is that, while the random forest regression (RFR) model emerges as the most effective tool for SoC estimation in lithium-ion batteries, there is potential to enhance the performance of simpler models through strategic adjustments and optimizations. Manufacturing defects, such as porosity and inclusions, can significantly compromise the structural integrity and performance of additively manufactured parts by acting as stress concentrators and potential initiation sites for failure. This paper investigates the effects of pore system morphology (number of pores, total volume, volume fraction, and standard deviation of size of pores) on the material response of additively manufactured Ti6Al4V specimens under a shear–compression stress state. An automatic approach for finite element simulations, using the J2 plasticity model, was utilized on a shear–compression specimen with artificial pores of varying characteristics to generate the dataset. An artificial neural network (ANN) surrogate model was developed to predict peak force and failure displacement of specimens with different pore attributes. The ANN demonstrated effective prediction capabilities, offering insights into the importance of individual input variables on mechanical performance of additively manufactured parts. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis using the Garson equation was performed to identify the most influential parameters affecting the material's behaviour. It was observed that materials with more uniform pore sizes exhibit better mechanical properties than those with a wider size distribution. Overall, the study contributes to a better understanding of the interplay between pore characteristics and material response, providing better defect-aware design and property–porosity linkage in additive manufacturing processes. Recently, efficient techniques to remove indium ions from e-waste have been described due to their critical application. This paper illustrates the recovery of indium ions from an aqueous solution using a liquid membrane. CyphosIL 104 described the excellent potential for the extraction of indium ions. Evaluation of the five process parameters, such as indium concentration (10–100 mg/L), carrier concentration (0.05–0.2 mol/L), feed phase acidity (0.01–3 mol/L), chloride ion concentration (0.5–4 mol/L) and the stripping agent concentration (0.1–5 mol/L) were conducted. The interactive impacts of the various parameters on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were employed to model and compare the FS-SLM process results. RSM model with a quadratic equation (R2 = 0.9589) was the most suitable model for describing the efficiency. ANN model with six neurons showed a prediction of extraction efficiency with R2 = 0.9860. The best-optimized data were: 73.92 mg/L, 0.157 mol/L, 1.386 mol/L, 2.99 mol/L, and 3.06 mol/L for indium concentration, carrier concentration, feed phase acidity, chloride ion concentration, and stripping agent concentration. The results achieved by RSM and ANN led to an experimentally determined extraction efficiency of 93.91%, and 94.85%, respectively. It was close to the experimental data in the optimization condition (95.77%). Organizations managing high-performance computing systems face a multitude of challenges, including overarching concerns such as overall energy consumption, microprocessor clock frequency limitations, and the escalating costs associated with chip production. Evidently, processor speeds have plateaued over the last decade, persisting within the range of 2 GHz to 5 GHz. Scholars assert that brain-inspired computing holds substantial promise for mitigating these challenges. The spiking neural network (SNN) particularly stands out for its commendable power efficiency when juxtaposed with conventional design paradigms. Nevertheless, our scrutiny has brought to light several pivotal challenges impeding the seamless implementation of large-scale neural networks (NNs) on silicon. These challenges encompass the absence of automated tools, the need for multifaceted domain expertise, and the inadequacy of existing algorithms to efficiently partition and place extensive SNN computations onto hardware infrastructure. In this paper, we posit the development of an automated tool flow capable of transmuting any NN into an SNN. This undertaking involves the creation of a novel graph-partitioning algorithm designed to strategically place SNNs on a network-on-chip (NoC), thereby paving the way for future energy-efficient and high-performance computing paradigms. The presented methodology showcases its effectiveness by successfully transforming ANN architectures into SNNs with a marginal average error penalty of merely 2.65%. The proposed graph-partitioning algorithm enables a 14.22% decrease in inter-synaptic communication and an 87.58% reduction in intra-synaptic communication, on average, underscoring the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in optimizing NN communication pathways. Compared to a baseline graph-partitioning algorithm, the proposed approach exhibits an average decrease of 79.74% in latency and a 14.67% reduction in energy consumption. Accurate instantaneous electricity peak load prediction is crucial for efficient capacity planning and cost-effective electricity network establishment. This paper aims to enhance the accuracy of instantaneous peak load forecasting by employing models incorporating various optimization and machine learning (ML) methods. This study examines the impact of independent inputs on peak load estimation through various combinations and subsets using multilinear regression (MLR) equations. This research utilizes input data from 1980 to 2020, including import and export data, population, and gross domestic product (GDP), to forecast the instantaneous electricity peak load as the output value. The effectiveness of these techniques is evaluated based on error metrics, including mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), and R2. The comparison extends to popular optimization methods, such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the newest method in the field, including dandelion optimizer (DO) and gold rush optimizer (GRO). This comparison is made against conventional machine learning methods, such as support vector regression (SVR) and artificial neural network (ANN), in terms of their prediction accuracy. The findings indicate that the ANN and GRO approaches produce the least statistical errors. Furthermore, the correlation matrix indicates a robust positive linear correlation between GDP and instantaneous peak load. Soft computational algorithms enhance the understanding, prediction, and classification of engineering and environmental problems. In Nigeria, works that have used these techniques in modeling soil erodibility are scarce. In this paper, several soft computing methods were integrated to assess and model the geotechnical and geomechanical characteristics of gully soils in Southeast Nigeria. Standard methods were employed for soil geotechnical analysis. Relationships between geotechnical parameters were estimated using R-type hierarchical clustering (HC), principal component analysis (PCA), and factor analysis (FA). Soil erodibility in the area was classified using Q-type HC and K-means clustering (KMC) algorithms. Moreover, gradient descent-optimized multilayer perceptron (GD-MLP) and multiple linear regression (MLR) models were developed to simulate and predict the soil properties, including fines %, sand %, gravel %, plasticity index, cohesion, and friction angle. This research indicated that: (1) all the analyzed soils have moderate–high erodibility characteristics, with high erodibility tendency predominant; (2) the PCA, FA, and R-type HC effectively captured the relationships of the geotechnical variables; (3) the Q-type HC and KMC models produced moderate and high erodibility clusters at 1:4 ratios; and (4) with low modeling errors, the MLR and GD-MLP accurately predicted the soil properties. However, overall, the MLR models (with R2 range of 0.976–1.000) outperformed the GD-MLP models (with R2 range of 0.924–0.998 and area under curve range of 0.900–0.948). Supercritical airfoils are critical components in the design of commercial wide-body aircraft wings due to their ability to enhance aerodynamic performance in transonic flow regimes. However, traditional design methods for supercritical airfoils can be time-consuming and require significant manual effort, not to mention the high cost associated with computational fluid dynamics analysis. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a highly automated approach for supercritical airfoil design, called Evolutionary Generative Design (EvoGD). The EvoGD approach is based on the framework of Evolutionary Computation and employs a series of sophisticated data-driven generative models incorporated with physical information to iteratively refine initial airfoil shapes, resulting in improved aerodynamic performances and reduced constraint violations. Moreover, to speed up the evaluation of the generated airfoils, a series of accurate and efficient data-driven predictors are utilized. The efficacy of the EvoGD approach was demonstrated through experiments on a dataset of 501 supercritical airfoils, including one baseline design and 500 randomly perturbed airfoils. On average, the generated airfoils showed improved performance in terms of buffet lift coefficient, cruise lift-to-drag ratio, and thickness by 5%, 4%, and 1%, respectively. The best generated airfoil outperformed the baseline design in terms of critical buffet lift coefficient and cruise lift-to-drag ratio by 7.1% and 6.4%, respectively. The possibility of recommendations of musical songs is becoming increasingly required because of the millions of users and songs included in online databases. Therefore, effective methods that automatically solve this issue need to be created. In this paper, the mentioned task is solved using three basic factors based on genre classification made by neural network, Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), and the tempo of the song. The recommendation system is built using a probability function based on these three factors. The authors' contribution to the development of an automatic content-based recommendation system are methods built with the use of the mentioned three factors. Using different combinations of them, four strategies were created. All four strategies were evaluated based on the feedback score of 37 users, who created a total of 300 surveys. The proposed recommendation methods show a definite improvement in comparison with a random method.
