Short-term power load forecasting plays a key role in daily scheduling and ensuring stable power system operation. The problem of the volatility of the power load sequence and poor prediction accuracy is addressed. In this study, a learning model integrating intelligent optimization algorithms is proposed, which combines an ensemble-learning model based on long short-term memory (LSTM), variational modal decomposition (VMD) and the multi-strategy optimization dung beetle algorithm (MODBO). The aim is to address the shortcomings of the dung beetle optimizer algorithm (DBO) in power load forecasting, such as its time-consuming nature, low accuracy, and ease of falling into local optimum. In this paper, firstly, the dung beetle algorithm is initialized using a lens-imaging reverse-learning strategy to avoid premature convergence of the algorithm. Second, a spiral search strategy is used to update the dynamic positions of the breeding dung beetles to balance the local and global search capabilities. Then, the positions of the foraging dung beetles are updated using an optimal value bootstrapping strategy to avoid falling into a local optimum. Finally, the dynamic-weighting coefficients are used to update the position of the stealing dung beetle to improve the global search ability and convergence of the algorithm. The proposed new algorithm is named MVMO-LSTM. Compared to traditional intelligent algorithms, the four-quarter averages of the RMSE, MAE and R2 of MVMO-LSTM are improved by 0.1147–0.7989 KW, 0.09799–0.6937 KW, and 1.00–13.05%, respectively. The experimental results show that the MVMO-LSTM proposed in this paper not only solves the shortcomings of the DBO but also enhances the stability, global optimization capability and information utilization of the model.

The paper “Using Absorption Models for Insulin and Carbohydrates and Deep Leaning to Improve Glucose Level Predictions” (Sensors 2021, 21, 5273) proposes a novel approach to predicting blood glucose levels for people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). By building exponential models from raw carbohydrate and insulin data to simulate the absorption in the body, the authors reported a reduction in their model’s root-mean-square error (RMSE) from 15.5 mg/dL (raw) to 9.2 mg/dL (exponential) when predicting blood glucose levels one hour into the future. In this comment, we demonstrate that the experimental techniques used in that paper are flawed, which invalidates its results and conclusions. Specifically, after reviewing the authors’ code, we found that the model validation scheme was malformed, namely, the training and test data from the same time intervals were mixed. This means that the reported RMSE numbers in the referenced paper did not accurately measure the predictive capabilities of the approaches that were presented. We repaired the measurement technique by appropriately isolating the training and test data, and we discovered that their models actually performed dramatically worse than was reported in the paper. In fact, the models presented in the that paper do not appear to perform any better than a naive model that predicts future glucose levels to be the same as the current ones.

In the realm of anesthetic management during surgical procedures, the reliable estimation of mean arterial pressure (MAP) is critical for ensuring patient safety and optimizing drug administration. This paper investigates the determination of the optimal Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) architectures aimed at enhancing the estimation of MAP. Using data from a trial involving 70 patients undergoing Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) provides the effect-site concentrations of Propofol and Remifentanil as key input variables for LSTM models. Our solution categorizes the selection strategies into three distinct methodologies: (i) a population-based method applying a single model across all patients, (ii) a patient-specific method tailoring models to individual physiological responses, and (iii) a novel category-specific method that groups patients based on the correlation between input variables, the effect-site concentrations of Propofol and Remifentanil, and MAP output. The novelty of this paper lies in the proposed method to identify the optimal architecture, evaluating 288 models to fine-tune the best model for each patient and category. Our findings suggest that the patient-specific model outperforms others, highlighting the benefits of personalized model architectures in medical artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The category-specific models provide a pragmatic solution, with reasonable accuracy and enhanced computational efficiency. By contrast, the population-based models, while efficient, have a lower estimation accuracy. This study confirms the significance of sophisticated LSTM architectures in medical AI, providing insights into their potential for advancing patient-specific anesthetic care by accurately online estimating MAP.

Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are used to design actuators, which are one of the most fascinating applications of SMA. Usually, they are on-off actuators because, in the case of continuous actuators, the nonlinearity of their characteristics is the problem. The main problem, especially in control systems in these actuators, is a hysteretic loop. There are many models of hysteresis, but from a control theory point of view, they are not helpful. This study used an artificial neural network (ANN) to model the SMA actuator hysteresis. The ANN structure and training method are presented in the paper. Data were generated from the Preisach model for training. This approach allowed for quick and controllable data generation, making experiments thoroughly planned and repeatable. The advantage and disadvantage of this approach is the lack of disturbances. The paper’s main goal is to model an SMA actuator. Additionally, it explores whether and how an ANN can describe and model the hysteresis loop. A literature review shows that ANNs are used to model hysteresis, but to a limited extent; this means that the hysteresis loop was modelled with a hysteretic element.

Sign language is an essential means of communication for individuals with hearing disabilities. However, there is a significant shortage of sign language interpreters in some languages, especially in Saudi Arabia. This shortage results in a large proportion of the hearing-impaired population being deprived of services, especially in public places. This paper aims to address this gap in accessibility by leveraging technology to develop systems capable of recognizing Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) using deep learning techniques. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model to capture the spatio-temporal aspects of sign language (i.e., letters and words). The hybrid model consists of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier to extract spatial features from sign language data and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) classifier to extract spatial and temporal characteristics to handle sequential data (i.e., hand movements). To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed hybrid model, we created a dataset of 20 different words, resulting in 4000 images for ArSL: 10 static gesture words and 500 videos for 10 dynamic gesture words. Our proposed hybrid model demonstrates promising performance, with the CNN and LSTM classifiers achieving accuracy rates of 94.40% and 82.70%, respectively. These results indicate that our approach can significantly enhance communication accessibility for the hearing-impaired community in Saudi Arabia. Thus, this paper represents a major step toward promoting inclusivity and improving the quality of life for the hearing impaired.

Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is an effective method for stock price prediction. However, due to the nonlinear and highly random nature of stock price fluctuations over time, LSTM exhibits poor stability and is prone to overfitting, resulting in low prediction accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel variant of LSTM that couples the forget gate and input gate in the LSTM structure, and adds a “simple” forget gate to the long-term cell state. In order to enhance the generalization ability and robustness of the variant LSTM, the paper introduces an attention mechanism and combines it with the variant LSTM, presenting the Attention Mechanism Variant LSTM (AMV-LSTM) model along with the corresponding backpropagation algorithm. The parameters in AMV-LSTM are updated using the Adam gradient descent method. Experimental results demonstrate that the variant LSTM alleviates the instability and overfitting issues of LSTM, effectively improving prediction accuracy. AMV-LSTM further enhances accuracy compared to the variant LSTM, and compared to AM-LSTM, it exhibits superior generalization ability, accuracy, and convergence capability.

In the era of continuous development in Internet of Things (IoT) technology, smart services are penetrating various facets of societal life, leading to a growing demand for interconnected devices. Many contemporary devices are no longer mere data producers but also consumers of data. As a result, massive amounts of data are transmitted to the cloud, but the latency generated in edge-to-cloud communication is unacceptable for many tasks. In response to this, this paper introduces a novel contribution—a layered computing network built on the principles of fog computing, accompanied by a newly devised algorithm designed to optimize user tasks and allocate computing resources within rechargeable networks. The proposed algorithm, a synergy of Lyapunov-based, dynamic Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), allows for predictive task allocation. The fog servers dynamically train LSTM networks to effectively forecast the data features of user tasks, facilitating proper unload decisions based on task priorities. In response to the challenge of slower hardware upgrades in edge devices compared to user demands, the algorithm optimizes the utilization of low-power devices and addresses performance limitations. Additionally, this paper considers the unique characteristics of rechargeable networks, where computing nodes acquire energy through charging. Utilizing Lyapunov functions for dynamic resource control enables nodes with abundant resources to maximize their potential, significantly reducing energy consumption and enhancing overall performance. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm surpasses traditional methods in terms of energy efficiency and resource allocation optimization. Despite the limitations of prediction accuracy in Fog Servers (FS), the proposed results significantly promote overall performance. The proposed approach improves the efficiency and the user experience of Internet of Things systems in terms of latency and energy consumption.

Short-term wind power forecasting has difficult problems due to the very large variety of speeds of the wind, which is a key factor in producing energy. From the point of view of the whole country, an important problem is predicting the total impact of wind power’s contribution to the country’s energy demands for succeeding days. Accordingly, efficient planning of classical power sources may be made for the next day. This paper will investigate this direction of research. Based on historical data, a few neural network predictors will be combined into an ensemble that is responsible for the next day’s wind power generation. The problem is difficult since wind farms are distributed in large regions of the country, where different wind conditions exist. Moreover, the information on wind speed is not available. This paper proposes and compares different structures of an ensemble combined from three neural networks. The best accuracy has been obtained with the application of an MLP combiner. The results of numerical experiments have shown a significant reduction in prediction errors compared to the naïve approach. The improvement in results with this naïve solution is close to two in the one-day-ahead prediction task.

Structural monitoring is crucial for assessing structural health, and high-precision deformation prediction can provide early warnings for safety monitoring. To address the issue of low prediction accuracy caused by the non-stationary and nonlinear characteristics of deformation sequences, this paper proposes a similarity clustering (SC) deformation prediction model based on GNSS/accelerometer time-frequency analysis. First, the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) algorithm is used to decompose the original monitoring data, and the time-frequency characteristic correlations of the deformation data are established. Then, similarity clustering is conducted for the monitoring sub-sequences based on their frequency domain characteristics, and clustered sequences are combined subsequently. Finally, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model is used to separately predict GNSS displacement and acceleration with clustered time series, and the overall deformation displacement is reconstructed based on the predicted GNSS displacement and acceleration-derived displacement. A shake table simulation experiment was conducted to validate the feasibility and performance of the proposed CEEMDAN-SC-LSTM model. A duration of 5 s displacement prediction is analyzed after 153 s of monitoring data training. The results demonstrate that the root mean square error (RMSE) of predicted displacement is 0.011 m with the proposed model, which achieves an improvement of 64.45% and 61.51% in comparison to the CEEMDAN-LSTM and LSTM models, respectively. The acceleration predictions also show an improvement of 96.49% and 95.58%, respectively, the RMSE of the predicted acceleration-reconstructed displacement is less than 1 mm, with a reconstruction similarity of over 99%. The overall displacement reconstruction similarity can reach over 95%.

Sensor-based human activity recognition has been widely used in various fields; however, there are still challenges involving recognition of daily complex human activities using sensors. In order to solve the problem of timeliness and homogeneity of recognition functions in human activity recognition models, we propose a human activity recognition model called ’BSTCA-HAR’ based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The approach proposed in this paper combines an attention mechanism and a temporal convolutional network (TCN). The learning and prediction units in the model can efficiently learn important action data while capturing long time-dependent information as well as features at different time scales. Our series of experiments on three public datasets (WISDM, UCI-HAR, and ISLD) with different data features confirm the feasibility of the proposed method. This method excels in dynamically capturing action features while maintaining a low number of parameters and achieving a remarkable average accuracy of 93%, proving that the model has good recognition performance.

This paper proposes a data-driven prediction scheme for the remaining life of centrifugal pump bearings based on the KPCA–LSTM network. A centrifugal pump bearing fault experiment bench is built to collect data, and the performance of time domain, frequency domain, and time-frequency domain characteristics under different working conditions is analyzed. Time domain characteristics, frequency domain characteristics, wavelet packet decomposition energy characteristics, and CEEMDAN energy features are found to be able to capture fault information under different working conditions. Therefore, 43 sensitive features are determined from the time domain, frequency domain, and time-frequency domain. Through the analysis of XJTU-SY bearing life cycle data and based on the weighted scores of monotonicity, robustness, and trend indicators, twelve outstanding characteristics of the bearing in the whole life cycle are selected, and a one-dimensional feature quantity that can characterize the life-degradation process of the centrifugal pump bearing is constructed after KPCA dimension reduction processing. The LSTM network, sensitive to time series, is selected to predict and analyze the constructed one-dimensional feature trend, and the prediction effects of the BP network and the CNN network are compared. The results show that this method has advantages in prediction accuracy and model training time.

The reliability and stability of marine diesel engines are pivotal to the safety and economy of maritime operations. Accurate and efficient prediction of the states of these engines is essential for performance evaluation and operational continuity. This paper introduces a novel hybrid deep learning model, the multi-dimensional global temporal predictive (MDGTP) model, designed for synchronous multi-state prediction of marine diesel engines. The model incorporates parallel multi-head attention mechanisms, an enhanced long short-term memory (LSTM) with interleaved residual connections, and gated recurrent units (GRUs). Additionally, we propose a dynamic arithmetic tuna optimization algorithm, which synergizes tuna swarm optimization (TSO), and the arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) for hyperparameter optimization, thereby enhancing prediction accuracy. Comparative experiments using actual marine diesel engine data demonstrate that our model outperforms the LSTM, GRU, LSTM–GRU, support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), Gaussian process regression (GPR), and back propagation (BP) models, achieving the lowest root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE), as well as the highest Pearson correlation coefficient across three sampling periods. Ablation studies confirm the significance of each component in improving prediction accuracy. Our findings validate the efficacy of the proposed MDGTP model for predicting the multi-dimensional operating states of marine diesel engines.

Accurate prediction of agricultural product prices is instrumental in providing rational guidance for agricultural production planning and the development of the agricultural industry. By constructing an end-to-end agricultural product price prediction model, incorporating a segmented Bézier curve fitting algorithm and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, this study selects corn futures prices listed on the Dalian Commodity Exchange as the research subject to predict and validate their price trends. Firstly, corn futures prices are fitted using segmented Bézier curves. Subsequently, the fitted price sequence is employed as a feature and input into an LSTM network for training to obtain a price prediction model. Finally, the prediction results of the Bézier curve-based LSTM model are compared and analyzed with traditional LSTM, ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Model), VMD-LSTM, and SVR (Support Vector Regression) models. The research findings indicate that the proposed Bézier curve-based LSTM model demonstrates significant predictive advantages in corn futures price prediction. Through comparison with traditional models, the effectiveness of this model is affirmed. Consequently, the Bézier curve-based LSTM model proposed in this paper can serve as a crucial reference for agricultural product price prediction, providing effective guidance for agricultural production planning and industry development.

Simulating animal movement has long been a central focus of study in the area of wildlife behaviour studies. Conventional modelling methods have difficulties in accurately representing changes over time and space in the data, and they generally do not effectively use telemetry data. Thus, this paper introduces a new and innovative deep reinforcement learning technique known as AnimalEnvNet. This approach combines historical trajectory data and remote sensing images to create an animal agent using deep reinforcement learning techniques. It overcomes the constraints of conventional modelling approaches. We selected pandas as the subject of our research and carried out research using GPS trajectory data, Google Earth images, and Sentinel-2A remote sensing images. The experimental findings indicate that AnimalEnvNet reaches convergence during supervised learning training, attaining a minimal mean absolute error (MAE) of 28.4 m in single-step prediction when compared to actual trajectories. During reinforcement learning training, the agent has the capability to replicate animal locomotion for a maximum of 12 iterations, while maintaining an error margin of 1000 m. This offers a novel approach and viewpoint for mimicking animal behaviour.

Predicting soil deformation is critical for the success of building construction projects. The traditional methods used for this task, which rely on theoretical calculations and numerical simulations, require detailed information on soil characteristics and geological conditions. These essential details are often challenging to obtain in practical engineering, thereby limiting the accuracy of these methods in building construction contexts. Deep learning (DL) provides a direct approach for modeling soil deformation without having a detailed understanding of the soil properties and geological conditions. However, the existing DL algorithms mainly focus on modeling deformation directly. With advancements in monitoring technology, integrating diverse monitoring data has become crucial for accurately predicting deformation, a need often overlooked in current practices. This paper introduces a monitoring data fusion (MDF) model aimed at enhancing the utilization efficiency of diverse monitoring data. Validated against real-world engineering scenarios, this model significantly outperforms traditional single-feature and multi-feature long short-term memory (LSTM) models. It achieves a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of approximately 2.12%, representing reductions of 30% and 63%, and a root mean square error (RMSE) of around 12.5 mm, with reductions of 36% and 77%. Additionally, the DL interpretability method, Shapley additive explanations (SHAP), is utilized to elucidate how various model features contribute to generating predictions.

This paper introduces hybrid models designed to analyze daily and weekly bitcoin return spanning the periods from 18 July 2010 to 28 December 2023 for daily data, and from 18 July 2010 to 24 December 2023 for weekly data. Firstly, the fractal and chaotic structure of the selected variables was explored. Asymmetric Cantor set, Boundary of the Dragon curve, Julia set z2 −1, Boundary of the Lévy C curve, von Koch curve, and Brownian function (Wiener process) tests were applied. The R/S and Mandelbrot–Wallis tests confirmed long-term dependence and fractionality. The largest Lyapunov test, the Rosenstein, Collins and DeLuca, and Kantz methods of Lyapunov exponents, and the HCT and Shannon entropy tests tracked by the Kolmogorov–Sinai (KS) complexity test determined the evidence of chaos, entropy, and complexity. The BDS test of independence test approved nonlinearity, and the TeraesvirtaNW and WhiteNW tests, the Tsay test for nonlinearity, the LR test for threshold nonlinearity, and White’s test and Engle test confirmed nonlinearity and heteroskedasticity, in addition to fractionality and chaos. In the second stage, the standard ARFIMA method was applied, and its results were compared to the LieNLS and LieOLS methods. The results showed that, under conditions of chaos, entropy, and complexity, the ARFIMA method did not yield successful results. Both baseline models, LieNLS and LieOLS, are enhanced by integrating them with deep learning methods. The models, LieLSTMOLS and LieLSTMNLS, leverage manifold-based approaches, opting for matrix representations over traditional differential operator representations of Lie algebras were employed. The parameters and coefficients obtained from LieNLS and LieOLS, and the LieLSTMOLS and LieLSTMNLS methods were compared. And the forecasting capabilities of these hybrid models, particularly LieLSTMOLS and LieLSTMNLS, were compared with those of the main models. The in-sample and out-of-sample analyses demonstrated that the LieLSTMOLS and LieLSTMNLS methods outperform the others in terms of MAE and RMSE, thereby offering a more reliable means of assessing the selected data. Our study underscores the importance of employing the LieLSTM method for analyzing the dynamics of bitcoin. Our findings have significant implications for investors, traders, and policymakers.

Solar energy has become a promising renewable energy source, offering significant opportunities for photovoltaic (PV) systems. Accurate and reliable PV generation forecasts are crucial for efficient grid integration and optimized system planning. However, the complexity of environmental factors, including seasonal and daily patterns, as well as social behaviors and user habits, presents significant challenges. Traditional prediction models often struggle with capturing the complex nonlinear dynamics in multivariate time series, leading to low prediction accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes a new PV power prediction method that considers factors such as light, air pressure, wind direction, and social behavior, assigning different weights to them to accurately extract nonlinear feature relationships. The framework integrates long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent units (GRU) to capture local time features, while bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) and an attention mechanism extract global spatiotemporal relationships, effectively capturing key features related to historical output. This improves the accuracy of multi-step predictions. To verify the feasibility of the method for multivariate time series, we conducted experiments using PV power prediction as a scenario and compared the results with LSTM, CNN, BiLSTM, CNN-LSTM and GRU models. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms these models, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 12.133, root mean square error (RMSE) of 14.234, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 2.1%, and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.895. These results indicate the effectiveness and potential of the method in PV prediction tasks.

A Distributed Elevator Fault Diagnosis System (DEFDS) is developed to tackle frequent malfunctions stemming from the widespread distribution and aging of elevator systems. Due to the complexity of elevator fault data and the subtlety of fault characteristics, traditional methods such as visual inspections and basic operational tests fall short in detecting early signs of mechanical wear and electrical issues. These conventional techniques often fail to recognize subtle fault characteristics, necessitating more advanced diagnostic tools. In response, this paper introduces a Principal Component Analysis–Long Short-Term Memory (PCA-LSTM) method for fault diagnosis. The distributed system decentralizes the fault diagnosis process to individual elevator units, utilizing PCA’s feature selection capabilities in high-dimensional spaces to extract and reduce the dimensionality of fault features. Subsequently, the LSTM model is employed for fault prediction. Elevator models within the system exchange data to refine and optimize a global prediction model. The efficacy of this approach is substantiated through empirical validation with actual data, achieving an accuracy rate of 90% and thereby confirming the method’s effectiveness in facilitating distributed elevator fault diagnosis.

Text-based CAPTCHAs remain the most widely adopted security scheme, which is the first barrier to securing websites. Deep learning methods, especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), are the mainstream approach for text CAPTCHA recognition and are widely used in CAPTCHA vulnerability assessment and data collection. However, verification code recognizers are mostly deployed on the CPU platform as part of a web crawler and security assessment; they are required to have both low complexity and high recognition accuracy. Due to the specifically designed anti-attack mechanisms like noise, interference, geometric deformation, twisting, rotation, and character adhesion in text CAPTCHAs, some characters are difficult to efficiently identify with high accuracy in these complex CAPTCHA images. This paper proposed a recognition model named Adaptive CAPTCHA with a CNN combined with an RNN (CRNN) module and trainable Adaptive Fusion Filtering Networks (AFFN), which effectively handle the interference and learn the correlation between characters in CAPTCHAs to enhance recognition accuracy. Experimental results on two datasets of different complexities show that, compared with the baseline model Deep CAPTCHA, the number of parameters of our proposed model is reduced by about 70%, and the recognition accuracy is improved by more than 10 percentage points in the two datasets. In addition, the proposed model has a faster training convergence speed. Compared with several of the latest models, the model proposed by the study also has better comprehensive performance.

Sign language recognition technology can help people with hearing impairments to communicate with non-hearing-impaired people. At present, with the rapid development of society, deep learning also provides certain technical support for sign language recognition work. In sign language recognition tasks, traditional convolutional neural networks used to extract spatio-temporal features from sign language videos suffer from insufficient feature extraction, resulting in low recognition rates. Nevertheless, a large number of video-based sign language datasets require a significant amount of computing resources for training while ensuring the generalization of the network, which poses a challenge for recognition. In this paper, we present a video-based sign language recognition method based on Residual Network (ResNet) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). As the number of network layers increases, the ResNet network can effectively solve the granularity explosion problem and obtain better time series features. We use the ResNet convolutional network as the backbone model. LSTM utilizes the concept of gates to control unit states and update the output feature values of sequences. ResNet extracts the sign language features. Then, the learned feature space is used as the input of the LSTM network to obtain long sequence features. It can effectively extract the spatio-temporal features in sign language videos and improve the recognition rate of sign language actions. An extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness and superior performance of the proposed method, with an accuracy of 85.26%, F1-score of 84.98%, and precision of 87.77% on Argentine Sign Language (LSA64).

The availability of high spatial and temporal resolution imagery, such as that provided by the Sentinel satellites, allows the use of image time series to classify land cover. Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are a clear candidate for such an approach; however, the presence of clouds poses a difficulty. In this paper, random forest (RF) and RNNs are used to reconstruct cloud-covered pixels using data from other next in time images instead of pixels in the same image. Additionally, two RNN architectures are tested to classify land cover from the series, treating reflectivities as time series and also treating spectral signatures as time series. The results are compared with an RF classification. The results for cloud removal show a high accuracy with a maximum RMSE of 0.057 for RNN and 0.038 for RF over all images and bands analysed. In terms of classification, the RNN model obtained higher accuracy (over 0.92 in the test data for the best hyperparameter combinations) than the RF model (0.905). However, the temporal–spectral model accuracies did not reach 0.9 in any case.

The prediction of water plant flow should establish relationships between upstream and downstream hydrological stations, which is crucial for the early detection of flow anomalies. Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs) have been widely applied in hydrological time series forecasting. However, due to the highly nonlinear and dynamic nature of hydrological time series, as well as the intertwined coupling of data between multiple hydrological stations, the original LSTM models fail to simultaneously consider the spatiotemporal correlations among input sequences for flow prediction. To address this issue, we propose a novel flow prediction method based on the Spatiotemporal Attention LSTM (STA-LSTM) model. This model, based on an encoder–decoder architecture, integrates spatial attention mechanisms in the encoder to adaptively capture hydrological variables relevant to prediction. The decoder combines temporal attention mechanisms to better propagate gradient information and dynamically discover key encoder hidden states from all time steps within a window. Additionally, we construct an extended dataset, which preprocesses meteorological data with forward filling and rainfall encoding, and combines hydrological data from multiple neighboring pumping stations with external meteorological data to enhance the modeling capability of spatiotemporal relationships. In this paper, the actual production data of pumping stations and water plants along the East-to-West Water Diversion Project are taken as examples to verify the effectiveness of the model. Experimental results demonstrate that our STA-LSTM model can better capture spatiotemporal relationships, yielding improved prediction performance with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.57, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 4.61, and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.001. Additionally, our model achieved a 3.96% increase in R2 compared to the baseline model.

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are advancing at a fast speed with the improvement of the automotive industry, which opens up new possibilities for different attacks. A Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacker floods the in-vehicle network with fake messages, resulting in the failure of driving assistance systems and impairment of vehicle control functionalities, seriously disrupting the normal operation of the vehicle. In this paper, we propose a novel DDoS attack detection method for in-vehicle Ethernet Scalable service-Oriented Middleware over IP (SOME/IP), which integrates the Hawkes process with Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTMs) to capture the dynamic behavioral features of the attacker. Specifically, we employ the Hawkes process to capture features of the DDoS attack, with its parameters reflecting the dynamism and self-exciting properties of the attack events. Subsequently, we propose a novel deep learning network structure, an HP-LSTM block, inspired by the Hawkes process, while employing a residual attention block to enhance the model’s detection efficiency and accuracy. Additionally, due to the scarcity of publicly available datasets for SOME/IP, we employed a mature SOME/IP generator to create a dataset for evaluating the validity of the proposed detection model. Finally, extensive experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DDoS attack detection method.

As a type of financial derivative, the price fluctuation of futures is influenced by a multitude of factors, including macroeconomic conditions, policy changes, and market sentiment. The interaction of these factors makes the future trend become complex and difficult to predict. However, for investors, the ability to accurately predict the future trend of stock index futures price is directly related to the correctness of investment decisions and investment returns. Therefore, predicting the stock index futures market remains a leading and critical issue in the field of finance. To improve the accuracy of predicting stock index futures price, this paper introduces an innovative forecasting method by combining the strengths of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and various Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH)-family models namely, MULTI-GARCH-LSTM. This integrated approach is specifically designed to tackle the challenges posed by the nonstationary and nonlinear characteristics of stock index futures price series. This synergy not only enhances the model’s ability to capture a wide range of market behaviors but also significantly improves the precision of future price predictions, catering to the intricate nature of financial time series data. Initially, we extract insights into the volatility characteristics, such as the aggregation of volatility in futures closing prices, by formulating a model from the GARCH family. Subsequently, the LSTM model decodes the complex nonlinear relationships inherent in the futures price series and incorporates assimilated volatility characteristics to predict future prices. The efficacy of this model is validated by applying it to an authentic dataset of gold futures. The empirical findings demonstrate that the performance of our proposed MULTI-GARCH-LSTM hybrid model consistently surpasses that of the individual models, thereby confirming the model’s effectiveness and superior predictive capability.

As an enhanced version of standard CAN, the Controller Area Network with Flexible Data (CAN-FD) rate is vulnerable to attacks due to its lack of information security measures. However, although anomaly detection is an effective method to prevent attacks, the accuracy of detection needs further improvement. In this paper, we propose a novel intrusion detection model for the CAN-FD bus, comprising two sub-models: Anomaly Data Detection Model (ADDM) for spotting anomalies and Anomaly Classification Detection Model (ACDM) for identifying and classifying anomaly types. ADDM employs Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) layers to capture the long-range dependencies and temporal patterns within CAN-FD frame data, thus identifying frames that deviate from established norms. ACDM is enhanced with the attention mechanism that weights LSTM outputs, further improving the identification of sequence-based relationships and facilitating multi-attack classification. The method is evaluated on two datasets: a real-vehicle dataset including frames designed by us based on known attack patterns, and the CAN-FD Intrusion Dataset, developed by the Hacking and Countermeasure Research Lab. Our method offers broader applicability and more refined classification in anomaly detection. Compared with existing advanced LSTM-based and CNN-LSTM-based methods, our method exhibits superior performance in detection, achieving an improvement in accuracy of 1.44% and 1.01%, respectively.

Accurate prediction of the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of lithium-ion batteries is crucial for reducing battery usage risks and ensuring the safe operation of systems. Addressing the impact of noise and capacity regeneration-induced nonlinear features on RUL prediction accuracy, this paper proposes a predictive model based on Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) data preprocessing and IHSSA-LSTM-TCN. Firstly, CEEMDAN is used to decompose lithium-ion battery capacity data into high-frequency and low-frequency components. Subsequently, for the high-frequency component, a Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) prediction model is employed. For the low-frequency component, an Improved Sparrow Search Algorithm (IHSSA) is utilized, which incorporates iterative chaotic mapping and a variable spiral coefficient to optimize the hyperparameters of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). The IHSSA-LSTM prediction model is obtained and used for prediction. Finally, the predicted values of the sub-models are combined to obtain the final RUL result. The proposed model is validated using the publicly available NASA dataset and CALCE dataset. The results demonstrate that this model outperforms other models, indicating good predictive performance and robustness.

This paper presents a comprehensive study on fall recognition and forecasting for reconfigurable stair-accessing robots by leveraging deep learning techniques. The proposed framework integrates machine learning algorithms and recurrent neural networks (RNNs), specifically Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM), for fall detection of service robots on staircases. The reconfigurable stair-accessing robot sTetro serves as the platform, and the fall data required for training models are generated in a simulation environment. The two machine learning algorithms are compared and their effectiveness on the fall recognition task is reported. The results indicate that the BiLSTM model effectively classifies falls with a median categorical accuracy of 94.10% in simulation and 90.02% with limited experiments. Additionally, the BiLSTM model can be used for forecasting, which is practically valuable for making decisions well before the onset of a free fall. This study contributes insights into the design and implementation of fall detection systems for service robots used to navigate staircases through deep learning approaches. Our experimental and simulation data, along with the simulation steps, are available for reference and analysis via the shared link.

The non-destructive study of soil micromorphology via computed tomography (CT) imaging has yielded significant insights into the three-dimensional configuration of soil pores. Precise pore analysis is contingent on the accurate transformation of CT images into binary image representations. Notably, segmentation of 2D CT images frequently harbors inaccuracies. This paper introduces a novel three-dimensional pore segmentation method, BDULSTM, which integrates U-Net with convolutional long short-term memory (CLSTM) networks to harness sequence data from CT images and enhance the precision of pore segmentation. The BDULSTM method employs an encoder–decoder framework to holistically extract image features, utilizing skip connections to further refine the segmentation accuracy of soil structure. Specifically, the CLSTM component, critical for analyzing sequential information in soil CT images, is strategically positioned at the juncture of the encoder and decoder within the U-shaped network architecture. The validation of our method confirms its efficacy in advancing the accuracy of soil pore segmentation beyond that of previous deep learning techniques, such as U-Net and CLSTM independently. Indeed, BDULSTM exhibits superior segmentation capabilities across a diverse array of soil conditions. In summary, BDULSTM represents a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology for the 3D segmentation of soil pores and offers a promising tool for analyzing pore structure and soil quality.

In recent years, the rapid growth of vehicles has imposed a significant burden on urban road resources. To alleviate urban traffic congestion in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), real-time and accurate traffic flow prediction has emerged as an effective approach. However, selecting relevant parameters from traffic flow information and adjusting hyperparameters in intelligent algorithms to achieve high prediction accuracy is a time-consuming process, posing practical challenges in dynamically changing traffic conditions. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel prediction architecture called Multiple Variables Heuristic Selection Long Short-Term Memory (MVHS-LSTM). The key innovation lies in its ability to select informative parameters, eliminating unnecessary factors to reduce computational costs while achieving a balance between prediction performance and computing efficiency. The MVHS-LSTM model employs the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to intelligently reduce factors and optimize cost efficiency. Additionally, it dynamically selects hyperparameters through a heuristic iteration process involving epoch, learning rate, and window length, ensuring adaptability and improved accuracy. Extensive simulations were conducted using real traffic flow data from Shanghai to evaluate the enhanced performance of MVHS-LSTM. The prediction results were compared with those of the ARIMA, SVM, and PSO-LSTM models, demonstrating the innovative capabilities and advantages of the proposed model.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the underlying technology that has enabled connecting daily apparatus to the Internet and enjoying the facilities of smart services. IoT marketing is experiencing an impressive 16.7% growth rate and is a nearly USD 300.3 billion market. These eye-catching figures have made it an attractive playground for cybercriminals. IoT devices are built using resource-constrained architecture to offer compact sizes and competitive prices. As a result, integrating sophisticated cybersecurity features is beyond the scope of the computational capabilities of IoT. All of these have contributed to a surge in IoT intrusion. This paper presents an LSTM-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) with a Dynamic Access Control (DAC) algorithm that not only detects but also defends against intrusion. This novel approach has achieved an impressive 97.16% validation accuracy. Unlike most of the IDSs, the model of the proposed IDS has been selected and optimized through mathematical analysis. Additionally, it boasts the ability to identify a wider range of threats (14 to be exact) compared to other IDS solutions, translating to enhanced security. Furthermore, it has been fine-tuned to strike a balance between accurately flagging threats and minimizing false alarms. Its impressive performance metrics (precision, recall, and F1 score all hovering around 97%) showcase the potential of this innovative IDS to elevate IoT security. The proposed IDS boasts an impressive detection rate, exceeding 98%. This high accuracy instills confidence in its reliability. Furthermore, its lightning-fast response time, averaging under 1.2 s, positions it among the fastest intrusion detection systems available.

Batteries have been considered a key element in several applications, ranging from grid-scale storage systems through electric vehicles to daily-use small-scale electronic devices. However, excessive charging and discharging will impair their capabilities and could cause their applications to fail catastrophically. Among several diagnostic indices, state-of-charge estimation is essential for evaluating a battery’s capabilities. Various approaches have been introduced to reach this target, including white, gray, and black box or data-driven battery models. The main objective of this work is to provide an extensive comparison of currently highly utilized machine learning-based estimation techniques. The paper thoroughly investigates these models’ architectures, computational burdens, advantages, drawbacks, and robustness validation. The evaluation’s main criteria were based on measurements recorded under various operating conditions at the Energy Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL) at FIU for the eFlex 52.8 V/5.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The primary outcome of this research is that, while the random forest regression (RFR) model emerges as the most effective tool for SoC estimation in lithium-ion batteries, there is potential to enhance the performance of simpler models through strategic adjustments and optimizations. Additionally, the choice of model ultimately depends on the specific requirements of the task at hand, balancing the need for accuracy with the complexity and computational resources available and how it can be merged with other SoC estimation approaches to achieve high precision.

Efficient integration of wind energy requires accurate wind power forecasting. This prediction is critical in optimising grid operation, energy trading, and effectively harnessing renewable resources. However, the wind’s complex and variable nature poses considerable challenges to achieving accurate forecasts. In this context, the accuracy of wind parameter forecasts, including wind speed and direction, is essential to enhancing the precision of wind power predictions. The presence of missing data in these parameters further complicates the forecasting process. These missing values could result from sensor malfunctions, communication issues, or other technical constraints. Addressing this issue is essential to ensuring the reliability of wind power predictions and the stability of the power grid. This paper proposes a long short-term memory (LSTM) model to forecast missing wind speed and direction data to tackle these issues. A fractional-order neural network (FONN) with a fractional arctan activation function is also developed to enhance generated wind power prediction. The predictive efficacy of the FONN model is demonstrated through two comprehensive case studies. In the first case, wind direction and forecast wind speed data are used, while in the second case, wind speed and forecast wind direction data are used for predicting power. The proposed hybrid neural network model improves wind power forecasting accuracy and addresses data gaps. The model’s performance is measured using mean errors and R2 values.

The power supply is crucial in the present day due to the negative impacts of poor power quality on the electric grid. In this research, we employed deep learning methods to investigate the power factor, which is a significant indicator of power quality. A multi-step forecast was developed for the power factor in the power supply installation of a hot rolling mill, extending beyond the horizontal line. This was conducted using data obtained from the respective electrical supply system. The forecast was developed via hybrid RNN (recurrent neural networks) incorporating LSTM (long short-term memory) and GRU (gated recurrent unit) layers. This research utilized hybrid recurrent neural network designs with deep learning methods to build several power factor models. These layers have advantages for time series forecasting. After conducting time series forecasting, qualitative indicators of the prediction were identified, including the sMAPE (Symmetric Mean Absolute Percentage Error) and regression coefficient. In this paper, the authors examined the quality of applied models and forecasts utilizing these indicators, both in the short term and long term.

This paper proposes an algorithm based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) network to improve the quality of high-frequency surface wave radar current measurements. In order to address the limitations of traditional high-frequency radar inversion algorithms, which solely rely on electromagnetic inversion and disregard physical oceanography, this study incorporates a bottom-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and towed ADCP into LSTM training. Additionally, wind and tidal oceanography data were included as inputs. This study compared high-frequency radar current data before and after calibration. The results indicated that both towed and bottom-mounted ADCP enhanced the quality of HF radar monitoring data. By comparing two methods of calibrating radar, we found that less towed ADCP data input is required for the same high-frequency radar data calibration effect. Furthermore, towed ADCP has a significant advantage in calibrating high-frequency radar data due to its low cost and wide calibration range. However, as the location of the calibrated high-frequency radar data moves further away from the towing position, the calibration error also increases. This article conducted sensitivity studies on the times and different positions of using towed ADCP to calibrate high-frequency radar data, providing reference for the optimal towing path and towing time for future corrections of high-frequency radar data.

Investment decision-makers increasingly rely on modern digital technologies to enhance their strategies in today’s rapidly changing and complex market environment. This paper examines the impact of incorporating Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) models into traditional trading strategies. The core investigation revolves around whether strategies enhanced with LSTM technology perform better than traditional methods alone. Traditional trading strategies typically depend on analyzing current closing prices and various technical indicators to take trading action. However, by applying LSTM models, this study aims to forecast closing prices with greater accuracy, thereby improving trading performance. Our findings indicate that trading strategies that utilize LSTM models outperform traditional strategies. This improvement suggests a significant advantage in using LSTM models for market prediction and trading decision making. Acknowledging that no one-size-fits-all strategy works for every market condition or stock is crucial. As such, traders are encouraged to select and tailor their strategies based on thorough testing and analysis to best suit their needs and market conditions. This study contributes to a better understanding of how integrating LSTM models can enhance traditional trading strategies, offering a path toward more effective decision making in the unpredictable stock market.

This study investigates the prediction of mental well-being factors—depression, stress, and anxiety—using the NetHealth dataset from college students. The research addresses four key questions, exploring the impact of digital biomarkers on these factors, their alignment with conventional psychology literature, the time-based performance of applied methods, and potential enhancements through multitask learning. The findings reveal modality rankings aligned with psychology literature, validated against paper-based studies. Improved predictions are noted with temporal considerations, and further enhanced by multitasking. Mental health multitask prediction results show aligned baseline and multitask performances, with notable enhancements using temporal aspects, particularly with the random forest (RF) classifier. Multitask learning improves outcomes for depression and stress but not anxiety using RF and XGBoost.

The concentration of ammonia nitrogen is significant for intensive aquaculture, and if the concentration of ammonia nitrogen is too high, it will seriously affect the survival state of aquaculture. Therefore, prediction and control of the ammonia nitrogen concentration in advance is essential. This paper proposed a combined model based on X Adaptive Boosting (XAdaBoost) and the Long Short-Term Memory neural network (LSTM) to predict ammonia nitrogen concentration in mariculture. Firstly, the weight assignment strategy was improved, and the number of correction iterations was introduced to retard the shortcomings of data error accumulation caused by the AdaBoost basic algorithm. Then, the XAdaBoost algorithm generated and combined several LSTM su-models to predict the ammonia nitrogen concentration. Finally, there were two experiments conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed prediction model. In the ammonia nitrogen concentration prediction experiment, compared with the LSTM and other comparison models, the RMSE of the XAdaBoost–LSTM model was reduced by about 0.89–2.82%, the MAE was reduced by about 0.72–2.47%, and the MAPE was reduced by about 8.69–18.39%. In the model stability experiment, the RMSE, MAE, and MAPE of the XAdaBoost–LSTM model decreased by about 1–1.5%, 0.7–1.7%, and 7–14%. From these two experiments, the evaluation indexes of the XAdaBoost–LSTM model were superior to the comparison models, which proves that the model has good prediction accuracy and stability and lays a foundation for monitoring and regulating the change of ammonia nitrogen concentration in the future.

This paper studies a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based coherent mortality forecasting method for developing countries or regions. Many of such developing countries have experienced a rapid mortality decline over the past few decades. However, their recent mortality development trend is not necessarily driven by the same factors as their long-term behavior. Hence, we propose a time-varying mortality forecasting model based on the life expectancy and lifespan disparity gap between these developing countries and a selected benchmark group. Here, the mortality improvement trend for developing countries is expected to converge gradually to that of the benchmark group during the projection phase. More specifically, we use a unified deep neural network model with LSTM architecture to project the life expectancy and lifespan disparity difference, which further controls the rotation of the time-varying weight parameters in the model. This approach is applied to three developing countries and three developing regions. The empirical results show that this LSTM-based coherent forecasting method outperforms classical methods, especially for the long-term projections of mortality rates in developing countries.

Accurate and reliable monthly streamflow prediction plays a crucial role in the scientific allocation and efficient utilization of water resources. In this paper, we proposed a prediction framework that integrates the input variable selection method and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). The input selection methods, including autocorrelation function (ACF), partial autocorrelation function (PACF), and time lag cross-correlation (TLCC), were used to analyze the lagged time between variables. Then, the performance of the LSTM model was compared with three other traditional methods. The framework was used to predict monthly streamflow at the Jimai, Maqu, and Tangnaihai stations in the source area of the Yellow River. The results indicated that grid search and cross-validation can improve the efficiency of determining model parameters. The models incorporating ACF, PACF, and TLCC with lagged time are evidently superior to the models using the current variable as the model inputs. Furthermore, the LSTM model, which considers the lagged time, demonstrated better performance in predicting monthly streamflow. The coefficient of determination (R2) improved by an average of 17.46%, 33.94%, and 15.29% for each station, respectively. The integrated framework shows promise in enhancing the accuracy of monthly streamflow prediction, thereby aiding in strategic decision-making for water resources management.

This paper introduces a frequency-domain false data injection attack called Frequency Spectrum Attack (FSA) and explores its effects on load forecasting and the energy management system (EMS) in a microgrid. The FSA analyzes time-series signals in the frequency domain to identify patterns in their frequency spectrum. It learns the distribution of dominant frequencies in a dataset of healthy signals. Subsequently, it manipulates the amplitudes of dominant frequencies within this healthy distribution, ensuring a stealthy attack against statistical analysis of the signal spectrum. We evaluated the performance of FSA on LSTM, a state-of-the-art network for load forecasting. The results show that FSA can triple the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of predictions compared to the normal case and increase it by 70% compared to noise injection attacks. Furthermore, FSA indirectly enhances battery utilization in the EMS by 45%. We then proposed a detection method that combines statistical analysis and machine-learning-based classification techniques with features. The model effectively distinguishes FSA from healthy and noisy signals, achieving an accuracy of 98.7% and an F1-score of 98.1% on a load dataset, covering healthy, FSA, and noisy load data. Finally, a countermeasure was introduced based on the statistical analysis of the frequency spectrum of healthy signals to mitigate the impact of FSA. This countermeasure successfully reduces the MAE of the attacked model from 0.135 to 0.053, validating its effectiveness in mitigating FSA.

Photovoltaic (PV) power generation forecasting is an important research topic, aiming to mitigate variability caused by weather conditions and improve power generation planning. Climate factors, including solar irradiance, temperature, and cloud cover, influence the energy conversion achieved by PV systems. Long-term weather forecasting improves PV power generation planning, while short-term forecasting enhances control methods, such as managing ramp rates. The stochastic nature of weather variables poses a challenge for linear regression methods. Consequently, advanced, state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) approaches capable of handling non-linear data, such as long short-term memory (LSTM), have emerged. This paper introduces the implementation of a multivariate machine learning model to forecast PV power generation, considering multiple weather variables. A deep learning solution was implemented to analyze weather variables in a short time horizon. Utilizing a hidden Markov model for data preprocessing, an LSTM model was trained using the Alice Spring dataset provided by DKA Solar Center. The proposed workflow demonstrated superior performance compared to the results obtained by state-of-the-art methods, including support vector machine, radiation classification coordinate with LSTM (RCC-LSTM), and ESNCNN specifically concerning the proposed multi-input single-output LSTM model. This improvement is attributed to incorporating input features such as active power, temperature, humidity, horizontal and diffuse irradiance, and wind direction, with active power serving as the output variable. The proposed workflow achieved a mean square error (MSE) of 2.17×10−7, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 4.65×10−4, and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 4.04×10−4.

Forest stock volume is the main factor to evaluate forest carbon sink level. At present, the combination of multi-source remote sensing and non-parametric models has been widely used in FSV estimation. However, the biodiversity of natural forests is complex, and the response of the spatial information of remote sensing images to FSV is significantly reduced, which seriously affects the accuracy of FSV estimation. To address this challenge, this paper takes China’s Baishanzu Forest Park with representative characteristics of natural forests as the research object, integrates the forest survey data, SRTM data, and Landsat 8 images of Baishanzu Forest Park, constructs a time series dataset based on survey time, and establishes an FSV estimation model based on the CNN-LSTM-Attention algorithm. The model uses the convolutional neural network to extract the spatial features of remote sensing images, uses the LSTM to capture the time-varying characteristics of FSV, captures the feature variables with a high response to FSV through the attention mechanism, and finally completes the prediction of FSV. The experimental results show that some features (e.g., texture, elevation, etc.) of the dataset based on multi-source data feature variables are more effective in FSV estimation than spectral features. Compared with the existing models such as MLR and RF, the proposed model achieved higher accuracy in the study area (R2 = 0.8463, rMSE = 26.73 m3/ha, MAE = 16.47 m3/ha).

Due to limitations in operational scope and efficiency, a single Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) falls short of meeting the demands of the contemporary marine working environment. Consequently, there is a growing interest in the coordination of multiple AUVs. To address the requirements of coordinated missions, this paper proposes a comprehensive solution for the coordinated development of multi-AUV formations, encompassing long-range ferrying, coordinated detection, and surrounding attack. In the initial phase, detection devices are deactivated, employing a path planning method based on the Rapidly Exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm to ensure collision-free AUV movement. During the coordinated detection phase, an artificial potential field method is applied to maintain AUV formation integrity and avoid obstacles, dynamically updating environmental probability based on formation movement. In the coordinated surroundings attack stage, predictive capabilities are enhanced using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and reinforcement learning. Specifically, LSTM forecasts the target’s position, while the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) method controls AUV formation. The effectiveness of this coordinated solution is validated through an integrated simulation trajectory.

Suicidal ideation constitutes a critical concern in mental health, adversely affecting individuals and society at large. The early detection of such ideation is vital for providing timely support to individuals and mitigating its societal impact. With social media serving as a platform for self-expression, it offers a rich source of data that can reveal early symptoms of mental health issues. This paper introduces an innovative ensemble learning method named LSTM-Attention-BiTCN, which fuses LSTM and BiTCN models with a self-attention mechanism to detect signs of suicidality in social media posts. Our LSTM-Attention-BiTCN model demonstrated superior performance in comparison to baseline models in the realm of classification and suicidal ideation detection, boasting an accuracy of 0.9405, a precision of 0.9385, a recall of 0.9424, and an F1-score of 0.9405. Our proposed model can aid healthcare professionals in recognizing suicidal tendencies among social media users accurately, thereby contributing to efforts to reduce suicide rates.

This paper concerns the application of a long short-term memory model (LSTM) for high-resolution reconstruction of turbulent pressure fluctuation signals from sparse (reduced) data. The model’s training was performed using data from high-resolution computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of high-speed turbulent boundary layers over a flat panel. During the preprocessing stage, we employed cubic spline functions to increase the fidelity of the sparse signals and subsequently fed them to the LSTM model for a precise reconstruction. We evaluated our reconstruction method with the root mean squared error (RMSE) metric and via inspection of power spectrum plots. Our study reveals that the model achieved a precise high-resolution reconstruction of the training signal and could be transferred to new unseen signals of a similar nature with extremely high success. The numerical simulations show promising results for complex turbulent signals, which may be experimentally or computationally produced.
