The widespread use of IoT devices has led to the generation of a huge amount of data and driven the need for analytical solutions in many areas of human activities, such as the field of smart agriculture. Continuous monitoring of crop growth stages enables timely interventions, such as control of weeds and plant diseases, as well as pest control, ensuring optimal development. Decision-making systems in smart agriculture involve image analysis with the potential to increase productivity, efficiency and sustainability. By applying Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), state recognition and classification can be performed based on images from specific locations. Thus, we have developed a solution for early problem detection and resource management optimization. The main concept of the proposed solution relies on a direct connection between Cloud and Edge devices, which is achieved through Fog computing. The goal of our work is creation of a deep learning model for image classification that can be optimized and adapted for implementation on devices with limited hardware resources at the level of Fog computing. This could increase the importance of image processing in the reduction of agricultural operating costs and manual labor. As a result of the off-load data processing at Edge and Fog devices, the system responsiveness can be improved, the costs associated with data transmission and storage can be reduced, and the overall system reliability and security can be increased. The proposed solution can choose classification algorithms to find a trade-off between size and accuracy of the model optimized for devices with limited hardware resources. After testing our model for tomato disease classification compiled for execution on FPGA, it was found that the decrease in test accuracy is as small as 0.83% (from 96.29% to 95.46%).

Recently, the fixed-point theorem for fuzzy contractive mappings has been investigated within the framework of intuitionistic fuzzy metric-like spaces. This interesting topic was explored through the utilization of G-Cauchy sequences as defined by Grabiec. The aim of this study is to enhance the aforementioned results in a few aspects. Initially, the proof of the fixed-point theorem is simplified and condensed, allowing for potential generalization to papers focusing on similar fixed-point analyses. Furthermore, instead of G-Cauchy sequences, the classical Cauchy sequences proposed by George and Veeramani are examined, incorporating an additional condition on the fuzzy metric. Within this context, a solution to an old unresolved question posed by Gregory and Sapena is provided. The findings are reinforced by relevant examples. The present study deals with image enhancement, which is a very common problem in image processing. This issue has been addressed in multiple works with different methods, most with the sole purpose of improving the perceived quality. Our goal is to propose an approach with a strong physical justification that can model the human visual system. This is why the Logarithmic Image Processing (LIP) framework was chosen. Within this model, initially dedicated to images acquired in transmission, it is possible to introduce the novel concept of negative grey levels, interpreted as light intensifiers. Such an approach permits the extension of the dynamic range of a low-light image to the full grey scale in "real-time", which means at camera speed. In addition, this method is easily generalizable to colour images and is reversible, i.e., bijective in the mathematical sense, and can be applied to images acquired in reflection thanks to the consistency of the LIP framework with human vision. Photovoltaic (PV) power generation has attracted widespread interest as a clean and sustainable energy source, with increasing global attention given to renewable energy. However, the operation and monitoring of PV power generation systems often result in large amounts of data containing missing values, outliers, and noise, posing challenges for data analysis and application. Therefore, PV data cleaning plays a crucial role in ensuring data quality, enhancing data availability and reliability. This study proposes a PV data cleaning method based on Rasterized Data Image Processing (RDIP) technology, which integrates rasterization and image processing techniques to select optimal contours and extract essential data. To validate the effectiveness of our method, we conducted comparative experiments using three data cleaning methods, including our RDIP algorithm, the Pearson correlation coefficient interpolation method, and cubic spline interpolation method. Subsequently, the cleaned datasets from these methods were utilized for power prediction using two linear regression models and two neural network models. The experimental results demonstrated that data cleaned using the RDIP algorithm improved the short-term forecast accuracy by approximately 1.0% and 3.7%, respectively, compared to the other two methods, indicating the feasibility and effectiveness of the RDIP approach. However, it is worth noting that the RDIP technique has limitations due to its reliance on integer parameters for grid division, potentially leading to coarse grid divisions. Future research efforts could focus on optimizing the selection of binarization thresholds to achieve better cleaning results and exploring other potential applications of RDIP in PV data analysis. This paper proposes a new method for recognizing, extracting, and processing Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) patterns from two-dimensional plots to identify specific defect types affecting electrical equipment without human intervention while retaining the principals that make PRPD analysis an effective diagnostic technique. The proposed method does not rely on training complex deep learning algorithms which demand substantial computational resources and extensive datasets that can pose significant hurdles for the application of on-line partial discharge monitoring. Instead, the developed Cosine Cluster Net (CCNet) model, which is an image processing pipeline, can extract and process patterns from any two-dimensional PRPD plot before employing the cosine similarity function to measure the likeness of the patterns to predefined templates of known defect types. The PRPD pattern recognition capabilities of the model were tested using several manually classified PRPD images available in the existing literature. The model consistently produced similarity scores that identified the same defect type as the one from the manual classification. The successful defect type reporting from the initial trials of the CCNet model together with the speed of the identification, which typically does not exceed four seconds, indicates potential for real-time applications. Disease recognition has been revolutionized by autonomous systems in the rapidly developing field of medical technology. A crucial aspect of diagnosis involves the visual assessment and enumeration of white blood cells in microscopic peripheral blood smears. This practice yields invaluable insights into a patient's health, enabling the identification of conditions of blood malignancies such as leukemia. Early identification of leukemia subtypes is paramount for tailoring appropriate therapeutic interventions and enhancing patient survival rates. However, traditional diagnostic techniques, which depend on visual assessment, are arbitrary, laborious, and prone to errors. The advent of ML technologies offers a promising avenue for more accurate and efficient leukemia classification. In this study, we introduced a novel approach to leukemia classification by integrating advanced image processing, diverse dataset utilization, and sophisticated feature extraction techniques, coupled with the development of TL models. Focused on improving accuracy of previous studies, our approach utilized Kaggle datasets for binary and multiclass classifications. Extensive image processing involved a novel LoGMH method, complemented by diverse augmentation techniques. Feature extraction employed DCNN, with subsequent utilization of extracted features to train various ML and TL models. Rigorous evaluation using traditional metrics revealed Inception-ResNet's superior performance, surpassing other models with F1 scores of 96.07% and 95.89% for binary and multiclass classification, respectively. Our results notably surpass previous research, particularly in cases involving a higher number of classes. These findings promise to influence clinical decision support systems, guide future research, and potentially revolutionize cancer diagnostics beyond leukemia, impacting broader medical imaging and oncology domains. Approximately 130,000 metal fuel pins were irradiated in the Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II) during its 30 years of operation to develop and characterize existing and prospective fuels. For many of the metal fuel irradiation experiments, neutron radiography imaging was performed to characterize fuel behavior, such as fuel axial expansion. While several fuel expansion results obtained from neutron radiography imaging have been published, the analysis of neutron radiography for the purpose of describing statistical properties of porous matter formed on top of the fuel pins, also referred to as fluff in previous publications, is significantly less represented in the literature with just a single paper so far. This study aims to validate and augment results reported in previous publications using automated image processing. The paper describes the statistical properties of the porous matter in terms of nine parameters derived from radiography images and correlates those parameters with such fuel properties as composition, expansion, temperature, and burnup. The reported results are based on 1097 fuel pins of eight different fuel compositions. For three major fuel types, U-10Zr, U-8Pu-10Zr, and U-19Pu-10Zr, a clear negative correlation is found between the Pu content and five parameters describing the amount of porous matter generated. The parameters describing granularity properties, however, showed either negative correlation or nonlinear dependency from fuel composition. The parameters describing the amount showed a positive correlation with fuel axial expansion, while granularity parameters showed a negative correlation with axial expansion. The dependency on cladding temperature was found to be weak. A positive correlation is demonstrated for volume parameters and fuel burnup. In general, reported results confirm and validate findings published in previous studies using a much larger number of pins and automated processing techniques, which easily lend themselves to reproducibility, thus avoiding subjective bias. Remote images are useful tools for detecting and monitoring landslides, including shallow landslides in agricultural environments. However, the use of non-commercial satellite images to detect the latter is limited because their spatial resolution is often comparable to or greater than landslide sizes, and the spectral characteristics of the pixels within the landslide body (LPs) are often comparable to those of the surrounding pixels (SPs). The buried archaeological remains are also often characterized by sizes that are comparable to image spatial resolutions and the spectral characteristics of the pixels overlying them (OBARPs) are often comparable to those of the pixels surrounding them (SBARPs). Despite these limitations, satellite images have been used successfully to detect many buried archaeological remains since the late 19th century. In this research context, some methodologies, which examined the values of OBARPs and SBARPs, were developed to rank images according to their capability to detect them. Based on these previous works, this paper presents an updated methodology to detect shallow landslides in agricultural environments. Sentinel-2 and Google Earth (GE) images were utilized to test and validate the methodology. The landslides were mapped using GE images acquired simultaneously or nearly simultaneously with the Sentinel-2 data. A total of 52 reference data were identified by monitoring 14 landslides over time. Since remote sensing indices are widely used to detect landslides, 20 indices were retrieved from Sentinel-2 images to evaluate their capability to detect shallow landslides. The frequency distributions of LPs and SPs were examined, and their differences were evaluated. The results demonstrated that each index could detect shallow landslides with sizes comparable to or smaller than the spatial resolution of Sentinel-2 data. However, the overall accuracy values of the indices varied from 1 to 0.56 and two indices (SAVI and RDVI) achieved overall accuracy values equal to 1. Therefore, to effectively distinguish areas where shallow landslides are present from those where they are absent, it is recommended to apply the methodology to many image processing products. In conclusion, given the significant impact of these landslides on agricultural activity and surrounding infrastructures, this methodology provides a valuable tool for detecting and monitoring landslide presence in such environments. The performance of the tire has a very important impact on the safe driving of the car, and in the actual use of the tire, due to complex road conditions or use conditions, it will inevitably cause immeasurable wear, scratches and other damage. In order to effectively detect the damage existing in the key parts of the tire, a tire surface damage detection method based on image processing was proposed. In this method, the image of tire side is captured by camera first. Then, the collected images are preprocessed by optimizing the multi-scale bilateral filtering algorithm to enhance the detailed information of the damaged area, and the optimization effect is obvious. Thirdly, the image segmentation based on clustering algorithm is carried out. Finally, the Harris corner detection method is used to capture the "salt and pepper" corner of the target region, and the segmsegmed binary image is screened and matched based on histogram correlation, and the target region is finally obtained. Over recent decades, natural and artificial colloids, as well as nanoparticles, have been increasingly used in various applications. Consequently, with this rising consumption, surface and subsurface environments are more exposed to these particles. The presence of these particles and the colloid-facilitated transport of microorganisms, the interactions between dissolved contaminants and mobile colloids in porous media, and the fate and transport of colloids through groundwater—one of the primary sources of water supply for human societies—have attracted extensive research. This study investigates the performance of several image processing methods in the field of colloid detection, which is a prerequisite for the subsequent steps in porous media research. We employed four different categories of image processing approaches on microscopy images—segmentation-based methods, background-detection-based methods, filter-based methods, and morphology-based methods—to conduct the detection process of colloids. Eight methods were applied and subsequently analyzed in terms of their drawbacks and advantages to determine the best ones in this domain. Finally, we proposed an ensemble approach that leverages the strengths of the three best methods using a majority vote to detect colloids more accurately. In experiments, Precision, Recall, F-measure, and TCR criteria were considered as evaluation tools. Experimental results demonstrate the high accuracy of image processing methods in recognizing colloids. Among all these methods, morphology-based methods were the most successful, achieving the best detection performance and improving the limited distinguishing features of small colloids. Each year, numerous tornadoes occur in forested regions of the United States. Due to the substantial number of fallen trees and accessibility issues, many of these tornadoes remain poorly documented and evaluated. The process of documenting tree damage to assess tornado intensity is known as the treefall method, an established and reliable technique for estimating near-surface wind speed. Consequently, the demand for documenting fallen trees has increased in recent years. However, the treefall method proves to be extremely expensive and time-consuming, requiring a laborious assessment of each treefall instance. This research proposes a novel approach to evaluating treefall in large, forested regions using deep learning-based automated detection and advanced image processing techniques. The developed treefall method relies on high-resolution aerial imagery from a damaged forest and involves three main steps: (1) instance segmentation detection, (2) estimating tree taper and predicting fallen tree directions, and (3) obtaining subsampled treefall vector results indicating the predominant flow direction in geospatial coordinates. To demonstrate the method's effectiveness, the algorithm was applied to a tornado track rated EF-4, which occurred on 10 December 2021, cutting through the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky. Upon observation of the predicted results, the model is demonstrated to accurately predict the predominant treefall angles. This study develops forest road recognition technology using deep learning-based image processing to support the advancement of autonomous driving technology for forestry machinery. Images were collected while driving a tracked forwarder along approximately 1.2 km of forest roads. A total of 633 images were acquired, with 533 used for the training and validation sets, and the remaining 100 for the test set. The YOLOv8 segmentation technique was employed as the deep learning model, leveraging transfer learning to reduce training time and improve model performance. The evaluation demonstrates strong model performance with a precision of 0.966, a recall of 0.917, an F1 score of 0.941, and a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.963. Additionally, an image-based algorithm is developed to extract the center from the forest road areas detected by YOLOv8 segmentation. This algorithm detects the coordinates of the road edges through RGB filtering, grayscale conversion, binarization, and histogram analysis, subsequently calculating the center of the road from these coordinates. The early detection of breast cancer is essential for improving treatment outcomes, and recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), combined with image processing techniques, have shown great potential in enhancing diagnostic accuracy. This study explores the effects of various image processing methods and AI models on the performance of early breast cancer diagnostic systems. By focusing on techniques such as Wiener filtering and total variation filtering, we aim to improve image quality and diagnostic precision. The novelty of this study lies in the comprehensive evaluation of these techniques across multiple medical imaging datasets, including a DCE-MRI dataset for breast-tumor image segmentation and classification (BreastDM) and the Breast Ultrasound Image (BUSI), Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS), Breast Cancer Histopathological Image (BreakHis), and Digital Database for Screening Mammography (DDSM) datasets. The integration of advanced AI models, such as the vision transformer (ViT) and the U-KAN model—a U-Net structure combined with Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks (KANs)—is another key aspect, offering new insights into the efficacy of these approaches in different imaging contexts. Experiments revealed that Wiener filtering significantly improved image quality, achieving a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 23.06 dB and a structural similarity index measure (SSIM) of 0.79 using the BreastDM dataset and a PSNR of 20.09 dB with an SSIM of 0.35 using the BUSI dataset. When combined filtering techniques were applied, the results varied, with the MIAS dataset showing a decrease in SSIM and an increase in the mean squared error (MSE), while the BUSI dataset exhibited enhanced perceptual quality and structural preservation. The vision transformer (ViT) framework excelled in processing complex image data, particularly with the BreastDM and BUSI datasets. Notably, the Wiener filter using the BreastDM dataset resulted in an accuracy of 96.9% and a recall of 96.7%, while the combined filtering approach further enhanced these metrics to 99.3% accuracy and 98.3% recall. In the BUSI dataset, the Wiener filter achieved an accuracy of 98.0% and a specificity of 98.5%. Additionally, the U-KAN model demonstrated superior performance in breast cancer lesion segmentation, outperforming traditional models like U-Net and U-Net++ across datasets, with an accuracy of 93.3% and a sensitivity of 97.4% in the BUSI dataset. The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential of digital image analysis as a tool to identify microplastic (MP) particles in surface waters and to facilitate their characterisation in terms of 2D and 3D morphology. Digital image analysis preceded by microscopic analysis was used for an exhaustive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of MPs isolated from the Vistula River. Using image processing procedures, 2D and 3D shape descriptors were determined. Principal Component Analysis was used to interpret the relationships between the parameters studied, characterising MP particle geometry, type and colour. This multivariate analysis of the data allowed three or four main factors to be extracted, explaining approximately 90% of the variation in the data characterising MP morphology. It was found that the first principal component for granules, flakes and films was largely represented by strongly correlated with 2D shape descriptors (area, perimeter, equivalent area diameter) and 3D shape descriptors (Corey Shape Factor, Compactness, Dimensionality). Considering the scraps, principal component PC1 was represented by only five of the above descriptors, and the Compactness variable had the largest contribution to principal component PC2. In addition, for granules, flakes and films, a relationship between 2D shape and the colour of their particles could be observed. For the most numerous MP group identified of multicoloured scraps, no such association was found. The results of our study can be used for further multivariate analysis regarding the presence of microplastic floating on the river surface, with a particular focus on particles of secondary origin. Several numerical simulations of fluid flow were performed using the Lattice Boltzmann method and image processing techniques to estimate the effective properties of 2-D porous rocks. The effective properties evaluated were the physical characteristics that allow fluid flow including the effective porosity, permeability, tortuosity, and average throat size to determine the storage and transport of fluids in porous rocks. The permeability was compared using the Darcy model simulation and the empirical Kozeny–Carman Equation. The results showed that the Lattice Boltzmann method and image processing techniques can estimate the effective parameters of porous rocks. Furthermore, there was a good correlation between permeability and parameters such as effective porosity, tortuosity, and average throat size. Underwater cracks are difficult to detect and observe, posing a major challenge to crack detection. Currently, deep learning-based underwater crack detection methods rely heavily on a large number of crack images that are difficult to collect due to their complex and hazardous underwater environments. This study proposes a new underwater image-processing method that combines a novel white balance method and bilateral filtering denoising method to transform underwater crack images into high-quality above-water images with original crack features. Crack detection is then performed based on an improved YOLOv9-OREPA model. Through experiments, it is found that the new image-processing method proposed in this study significantly improves the evaluation indicators of new images, compared with other methods. The improved YOLOv9-OREPA also exhibits a significantly improved performance. The experimental results demonstrate that the method proposed in this study is a new approach suitable for detecting underwater cracks in dams and achieves the goal of transforming underwater images into above-water images. As strawberries are a widely grown cash crop, the development of strawberry fruit-picking robots for an intelligent harvesting system should match the rapid development of strawberry cultivation technology. Ripeness identification is a key step to realizing selective harvesting by strawberry fruit-picking robots. Therefore, this study proposes combining deep learning and image processing for target detection and classification of ripe strawberries. First, the YOLOv8+ model is proposed for identifying ripe and unripe strawberries and extracting ripe strawberry targets in images. The ECA attention mechanism is added to the backbone network of YOLOv8+ to improve the performance of the model, and Focal-EIOU loss is used in loss function to solve the problem of imbalance between easy- and difficult-to-classify samples. Second, the centerline of the ripe strawberries is extracted, and the red pixels in the centerline of the ripe strawberries are counted according to the H-channel of their hue, saturation, and value (HSV). The percentage of red pixels in the centerline is calculated as a new parameter to quantify ripeness, and the ripe strawberries are classified as either fully ripe strawberries or not fully ripe strawberries. The results show that the improved YOLOv8+ model can accurately and comprehensively identify whether the strawberries are ripe or not, and the mAP50 curve steadily increases and converges to a relatively high value, with an accuracy of 97.81%, a recall of 96.36%, and an F1 score of 97.07. The accuracy of the image processing method for classifying ripe strawberries was 91.91%, FPR was 5.03%, and FNR was 14.28%. This study demonstrates the program's ability to quickly and accurately identify strawberries at different stages of ripeness in a facility environment, which can provide guidance for selective picking by subsequent fruit-picking robots. In dietary assessment using a single-view food image, an object of known size, such as a checkerboard, is often placed manually in the camera's view as a scale reference to estimate food volume. This traditional scale reference is inconvenient to use because of the manual placement requirement. Consequently, utensils, such as plates and bowls, have been suggested as alternative references. Although these references do not need a manual placement procedure, there is a unique challenge when a dining bowl is used as a reference. Unlike a dining plate, whose shallow shape does not usually block the view of the food, a dining bowl does obscure the food view, and its shape may not be fully observable from the single-view food image. As a result, significant errors may occur in food volume estimation due to the unknown shape of the bowl. To address this challenge, we present a novel method to premeasure both the size and shape of the empty bowl before it is used in a dietary assessment study. In our method, an image is taken with a labeled paper ruler adhered to the interior surface of the bowl, a mathematical model is developed to describe its shape and size, and then an optimization method is used to determine the bowl parameters based on the locations of observed ruler makers from the bowl image. Experimental studies were performed using both simulated and actual bowls to assess the reliability and accuracy of our bowl measurement method.

Liver cancer is one of the malignancies with high mortality rates worldwide, and its timely detection and accurate diagnosis are crucial for improving patient prognosis. To address the limitations of traditional image segmentation techniques and the U-Net network in capturing fine image features, this study proposes an improved model based on the U-Net architecture, named RHEU-Net. By replacing traditional convolution modules in the encoder and decoder with improved residual modules, the network's feature extraction capabilities and gradient stability are enhanced. A Hybrid Gated Attention (HGA) module is integrated before the skip connections, enabling the parallel processing of channel and spatial attentions, optimizing the feature fusion strategy, and effectively replenishing image details. A Multi-Scale Feature Enhancement (MSFE) layer is introduced at the bottleneck, utilizing multi-scale feature extraction technology to further enhance the expression of receptive fields and contextual information, improving the overall feature representation effect. Testing on the LiTS2017 dataset demonstrated that RHEU-Net achieved Dice scores of 95.72% for liver segmentation and 70.19% for tumor segmentation. These results validate the effectiveness of RHEU-Net and underscore its potential for clinical application.

The digitization of pathology departments in hospitals around the world is now a reality. The current commercial solutions applied to digitize histopathological samples consist of a robotic microscope with an RGB-type camera attached to it. This technology is very limited in terms of information captured, as it only works with three spectral bands of the visible electromagnetic spectrum. Therefore, we present an automated system that combines RGB and hyperspectral technology. Throughout this work, the hardware of the system and its components are described along with the developed software and a working methodology to ensure the correct capture of histopathological samples. The software is integrated by the controller of the microscope, which features an autofocus functionality, whole slide scanning with a stitching algorithm, and hyperspectral scanning functionality. As a reference, the time to capture and process a complete sample with 20 regions of high biological interest using the proposed method is estimated at a maximum of 79 min, reducing the time required by a manual operator by at least three times. Both hardware and software can be easily adapted to other systems that might benefit from the advantages of hyperspectral technology.

Canopy imaging offers a non-destructive, efficient way to objectively measure canopy size, detect stress symptoms, and assess pigment concentrations. While it is faster and easier than traditional destructive methods, manual image analysis, including segmentation and evaluation, can be time-consuming. To make imaging more widely accessible, it's essential to reduce the cost of imaging systems and automate the analysis process. We developed a low-cost imaging system with automated analysis using an embedded microcomputer equipped with a monochrome camera and a filter for a total hardware cost of ~USD 500. Our imaging system takes images under blue, green, red, and infrared light, as well as chlorophyll fluorescence. The system uses a Python-based program to collect and analyze images automatically. The multi-spectral imaging system separates plants from the background using a chlorophyll fluorescence image, which is also used to quantify canopy size. The system then generates normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI, "greenness") images and histograms, providing quantitative, spatially resolved information. We verified that these indices correlate with leaf chlorophyll content and can easily add other indices by installing light sources with the desired spectrums. The low cost of the system can make this imaging technology widely available.

The number of maize leaves is an important indicator for assessing plant growth and regulating population structure. However, the traditional leaf counting method mainly relies on manual work, which is both time-consuming and straining, while the existing image processing methods have low accuracy and poor adaptability, making it difficult to meet the standards for practical application. To accurately detect the growth status of maize, an improved lightweight YOLOv8 maize leaf detection and counting method was proposed in this study. Firstly, the backbone of the YOLOv8 network is replaced using the StarNet network and the convolution and attention fusion module (CAFM) is introduced, which combines the local convolution and global attention mechanisms to enhance the ability of feature representation and fusion of information from different channels. Secondly, in the neck network part, the StarBlock module is used to improve the C2f module to capture more complex features while preserving the original feature information through jump connections to improve training stability and performance. Finally, a lightweight shared convolutional detection head (LSCD) is used to reduce repetitive computations and improve computational efficiency. The experimental results show that the precision, recall, and mAP50 of the improved model are 97.9%, 95.5%, and 97.5%, and the numbers of model parameters and model size are 1.8 M and 3.8 MB, which are reduced by 40.86% and 39.68% compared to YOLOv8. This study shows that the model improves the accuracy of maize leaf detection, assists breeders in making scientific decisions, provides a reference for the deployment and application of maize leaf number mobile end detection devices, and provides technical support for the high-quality assessment of maize growth.

Plane wave imaging persists as a focal point of research due to its high frame rate and low complexity. However, in spite of these advantages, its performance can be compromised by several factors such as noise, speckle, and artifacts that affect the image quality and resolution. In this paper, we propose an attention-based complex convolutional residual U-Net to reconstruct improved in-phase/quadrature complex data from a single insonification acquisition that matches diverging wave imaging. Our approach introduces an attention mechanism to the complex domain in conjunction with complex convolution to incorporate phase information and improve the image quality matching images obtained using coherent compounding imaging. To validate the effectiveness of this method, we trained our network on a simulated phased array dataset and evaluated it using in vitro and in vivo data. The experimental results show that our approach improved the ultrasound image quality by focusing the network's attention on critical aspects of the complex data to identify and separate different regions of interest from background noise.

In applications reliant on image processing, the management of lighting holds significance for both precise object detection and efficient energy utilization. Conventionally, lighting control involves manual switching, timed activation or automated adjustment based on illuminance sensor readings. This research introduces an embedded system employing image processing methodologies for intelligent ambient lighting, focusing specifically on reference-color-based illumination for object detection and positioning within robotic handling scenarios. Evaluating the system's efficacy entails analyzing the illuminance levels and power consumption through a tailored experimental setup. To minimize illuminance, the LED-based lighting system, controlled via pulse-width modulation (PWM), is calibrated using predetermined red, green, blue and yellow (RGBY) reference objects, obviating the need for external sensors. Experimental findings underscore the significance of color choice in detection accuracy, highlighting yellow as the optimal color requiring minimal illumination. Successful object detection based on color is demonstrated at an illuminance level of approximately 50 lx, accompanied by energy savings contingent upon ambient lighting conditions. To enhance the synchronous detection of the horizontal and vertical positions of the torch in swing arc narrow gap welding, a torch pose detection (TPD) method is proposed. This approach utilizes passive visual sensing to capture images of the arc on the groove sidewall, using advanced image processing methods to extract and fit the arc contour. The coordinates of the arc contour center point and the highest point are determined through the arc contour fitting line. The torch center position is calculated from the average horizontal coordinates of the arc contour centers in adjacent welding images, while the height position is determined from the vertical coordinate of the arc's highest point. Experimental validation in both variable and constant groove welding conditions demonstrated the TPD method's accuracy within 0.32 mm for detecting the torch center position. This method eliminates the need to construct the wire centerline, which was a requirement in previous approaches, thereby reducing the impact of wire straightness on detection accuracy. The proposed TPD method successfully achieves simultaneous detection of the torch center and height positions, laying the foundation for intelligent detection and adaptive control in swing arc narrow gap welding. In the field of endoscopic imaging, challenges such as low resolution, complex textures, and blurred edges often degrade the quality of 3D reconstructed models. To address these issues, this study introduces an innovative endoscopic image super-resolution and 3D reconstruction technique named Omni-Directional Focus and Scale Resolution (OmDF-SR). This method integrates an Omnidirectional Self-Attention (OSA) mechanism, an Omnidirectional Scale Aggregation Group (OSAG), a Dual-stream Adaptive Focus Mechanism (DAFM), and a Dynamic Edge Adjustment Framework (DEAF) to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of super-resolution processing. Additionally, it employs Structure from Motion (SfM) and Multi-View Stereo (MVS) technologies to achieve high-precision medical 3D models. Experimental results indicate significant improvements in image processing with a PSNR of 38.2902 dB and an SSIM of 0.9746 at a magnification factor of ×2, and a PSNR of 32.1723 dB and an SSIM of 0.9489 at ×4. Furthermore, the method excels in reconstructing detailed 3D models, enhancing point cloud density, mesh quality, and texture mapping richness, thus providing substantial support for clinical diagnosis and surgical planning. The problematic cohesiveness of food powders can commonly be solved using pulsed fluidized-bed agglomeration. However, progressively larger granules may result in unstable fluidization. The aims of this research study were to investigate fluid bed expansion as affected by particle enlargement and to control its stability using an image-processing technique. Instant riceberry powder (IRP) was agglomerated using varied air pulsation frequencies (1, 2.5, and 4 Hz). Bed expansion captured by image processing revealed that expanded bed height decreased with agglomeration time. The results showed an enlargement of agglomerated IRP, expressed in D10, D50, and D90, with narrower distribution presented by span, and an improvement in bulk and reconstitution properties. The reduced Carr index (22–27%) and Hausner ratio (1.28–1.38) presented fair flowability and intermediate cohesiveness, respectively. Additionally, airflow during agglomerate growth was progressively adjusted using the image-processing method to enhance bed hydrodynamic stability, leading to improved process efficiency and product quality. This proposed approach has potential applications in the food powder manufacturing industry, particularly by enhancing the fluidization of cohesive particles with cracks and channels. The correct management of operations in thermoelectric plants is based on the continuous evaluation of the structural integrity of its components, among which there are elements made of stainless steel that perform water conduction functions at elevated temperatures. The working conditions generate progressive wear that must be monitored from the perspective of the microstructure of the material. When AISI 304 stainless steel is subjected to a temperature range between 450 and 850 °C, it is susceptible to intergranular corrosion. This phenomenon, known as sensitization, causes the material to lose strength and generates different patterns in its microstructure. This research analyzes three different patterns present in the microstructure of stainless steel, which manifest themselves through the following characteristics: the absence of intergranular corrosion, the presence of intergranular corrosion, and the precipitation of chromium carbides. This article shows the development of a methodology capable of recognizing the corrosion patterns generated in stainless steel with an accuracy of 98%, through the integration of a multilayer perceptron neural network and the following digital image processing methods: phase congruence and a gray-level co-occurrence matrix. Meat characterized by a high marbling value is typically anticipated to display enhanced sensory attributes. This study aimed to predict the marbling scores of rib-eye, steaks sourced from the Longissimus dorsi muscle of different cattle types, namely Boran, Senga, and Sheko, by employing digital image processing and machine-learning algorithms. Marbling was analyzed using digital image processing coupled with an extreme gradient boosting (GBoost) machine learning algorithm. Meat texture was assessed using a universal texture analyzer. Sensory characteristics of beef were evaluated through quantitative descriptive analysis with a trained panel of twenty. Using selected image features from digital image processing, the marbling score was predicted with R2 (prediction) = 0.83. Boran cattle had the highest fat content in sirloin and chuck cuts (12.68% and 12.40%, respectively), followed by Senga (11.59% and 11.56%) and Sheko (11.40% and 11.17%). Tenderness scores for sirloin and chuck cuts differed among the three breeds: Boran (7.06 ± 2.75 and 3.81 ± 2.24, respectively), Senga (5.54 ± 1.90 and 5.25 ± 2.47), and Sheko (5.43 ± 2.76 and 6.33 ± 2.28 Nmm). Sheko and Senga had similar sensory attributes. Marbling scores were higher in Boran (4.28 ± 1.43 and 3.68 ± 1.21) and Senga (2.88 ± 0.69 and 2.83 ± 0.98) compared to Sheko (2.73 ± 1.28 and 2.90 ± 1.52). The study achieved a remarkable milestone in developing a digital tool for predicting marbling scores of Ethiopian beef breeds. Furthermore, the relationship between quality attributes and beef marbling score has been verified. This research introduces an approach to visible spectroscopy leveraging image processing techniques and machine learning (ML) algorithms. The methodology involves calculating the hue value of an image and deriving the corresponding dominant wavelength. Initially, a six-degree polynomial regression supervised machine learning model is trained to establish a relationship between the hue values and dominant wavelengths. Subsequently, the ML model is employed to analyse the visible wavelengths emitted by various sources, including sodium vapour, neon lamps, mercury vapour, copper vapour lasers, and helium vapour. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through error analysis, revealing remarkably low error percentages of 0.04%, 0.01%, 3.7%, 1%, and 0.07% for sodium vapour, neon lamp, copper vapour laser, and helium vapour, respectively. This approach offers a promising avenue for accurate and efficient visible spectroscopy, with potential applications in diverse fields such as material science, environmental monitoring, and biomedical research. Converting a camera's RAW image to an RGB format for human perception involves utilizing an imaging pipeline, and a series of processing modules. Existing modules often result in varying degrees of original information loss, which can render the reverse imaging pipeline unable to recover the original RAW image information. To this end, this paper proposes a new, almost reversible image imaging pipeline. Thus, RGB images and RAW images can be effectively converted between each other. Considering the impact of original information loss, this paper introduces a two-stage tone mapping operation (TMO). In the first stage, the RAW image with a linear response is transformed into an RGB color image. In the second stage, color scale mapping corrects the dynamic range of the image suitable for human perception through linear stretching, and reduces the loss of sensitive information to the human eye during the integer process. effectively preserving the original image's dynamic information. The DCRAW imaging pipeline addresses the problem of high light overflow by directly highlighting cuts. The proposed imaging pipeline constructs an independent highlight processing module, and preserves the highlighted information of the image. The experimental results demonstrate that the two-stage tone mapping operation embedded in the imaging processing pipeline provided in this article ensures that the image output is suitable for human visual system (HVS) perception and retains more original image information. This paper demonstrates how the processing of Brillouin gain spectra (BGS) by two-dimensional correlation methods improves the accuracy of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) extraction in distributed fiber optic sensor systems based on the BOTDA/BOTDR (Brillouin optical time domain analysis/reflectometry) principles. First, the spectra corresponding to different spatial coordinates of the fiber sensor are resampled. Subsequently, the resampled spectra are aligned by the position of the maximum by shifting in frequency relative to each other. The spectra aligned by the position of the maximum are then averaged, which effectively increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Finally, the Lorentzian curve fitting (LCF) method is applied to the spectrum with improved characteristics, including a reduced scanning step and an increased SNR. Simulations and experiments have demonstrated that the method is particularly efficacious when the signal-to-noise ratio does not exceed 8 dB and the frequency scanning step is coarser than 4 MHz. This is particularly relevant when designing high-speed sensors, as well as when using non-standard laser sources, such as a self-scanning frequency laser, for distributed fiber-optic sensing. The complex systematics of the genus Sedum, the difficulties of its classification and the ambiguity of the concrete identification of the taxa brought about the need to implement a measurement system adaptable to field conditions, so as to facilitate the accuracy of data collection, avoiding the etiolation of samples and, therefore, the deterioration of the morphological structures subject to analysis. Thus, our study describes a digitization of the classic method of making measurements using millimeter paper, thus facilitating the subsequent statistical processing of quantifiable values. Depending on the number of pixels in the photos taken and the pixel/millimeter ratio, a variable measurement scale can be created depending on the size of the analyzed taxomes. The method used adds to the classic taxonomy, which is based on the analysis of morphological characteristics to determine the species of these succulent plants. This paper investigates virtual reality (VR) technology which can increase the quality of experience (QoE) on the graphics quality within the gaming environment. The graphics quality affects the VR environment and user experience. To gather relevant data, we conduct a live user experience and compare games with high- and low-quality graphics. The qualitative feedback obtained through questionnaires prove the importance ofcontextualizing users' experiences playing both games. Furthermore, our findings prove the crucial role of graphics quality in adopting user engagement and enjoyment during gaming sessions. Users consistently reported their feeling more connected when interacting with games and receiving high-quality graphics. If the graphics quality received is low, the user rating for a particular game is low. Further examination of VR technology reveals its potential to revolutionize graphics quality within game play. This paper presents a practical method for analyzing drivers' eye movements, providing a valuable tool for understanding their behavior during driving simulations. The method, which utilizes an image processing technique, addresses the challenges when the driver's attention is on points without information about the image depth. The screen image changes or moves with the simulation. It allows us to identify the gaze position relative to the road, determining whether the glance is inside or outside. This is achieved by transforming RGB images (frames) collected by the eye-tracker video camera into a b/w image using the Canny filter. This filter can identify objects' contours by evaluating the change in color of their surfaces. A window is then applied to these new images to extract information about the gaze position in the real world. Four drivers were used as a sample for the method's testing. The findings demonstrate various driver variations and a disparity between driving in curved and rectilinear segments. The airlift pump is a key part of wastewater treatment and is employed as an innovative and feasible collection tool. However, as one of the key factors in the lifting capability of airlift pumps, film thickness in the gas–liquid two-phase flow operating in pumps is still an unknown topic because it is difficult to measure. This paper proposes a visualization method for measuring film thickness and investigates the film thickness when operating under gas flow with a high rate in airlift pumps using experiments. Firstly, a simulation experiment platform was built, and the images of the film structure were acquired by a high-speed camera. Then, image-processing technology and an image distortion correction were proposed to extract the gas–liquid interface for studying the thickness of the film. The experimental results demonstrated that a large film thickness ranging from 0.15 D to 0.24 D was found in airlift pumps and that its film thickness kept a constant value, even under a high gas superficial velocity, maintaining a large output liquid flow from airlift pumps. As wastewater was carried by wastewater treatment, a larger film thickness of the annular film will benefit the high lifting rate of wastewater. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests, achieved through the use of antibiotic-impregnated disks in a suitable laboratory environment, are conducted to determine which antibiotics are effective against the bacteria present in the body of an infected patient. The Kirby–Bauer method, a type of disk diffusion antimicrobial susceptibility test, is currently widely applied in microbiology laboratories due to its proven effectiveness. In our study, we developed an algorithm that utilizes image processing techniques to detect the inhibition zones of bacteria. A certain color depth acts as the threshold for the inhibition zone, with its radius determined according to the size of the reference object. This approach facilitates the measurement of inhibition zones and employs machine learning and deep learning to categorize antibiograms, followed by determination of whether a bacterium on the disk is sensitive or resistant to the antibiotics applied. The focus of this research is creating an automated interpretation system for antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the disk diffusion technique, thus simplifying the measurement and interpretation of inhibition zone sizes. With the development of intelligent vehicles, the vehicle image processing system has put forward increasing demand for computing resource utilization efficiency and real-time processing. However, the traditional information processing method that binds software and hardware severely restricts the efficient use of image processing resources. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a resource reconstruction scheme based on a load balancing strategy, which can realize unified management and dynamic allocation of image processing resources by establishing a system resource view. Then, this paper builds a physical verification platform and constructs a comparative verification experiment to verify the effectiveness of the resource reconstruction scheme. Experimental results prove that this resource reconstruction scheme can effectively improve the resource utilization efficiency of multi-core digital signal processing (DSP), realize software-defined hardware functions, and optimize the real-time performance of parallel processing. An integrated automatic optical inspection (iAOI) system with a procedure was proposed for a printed circuit board (PCB) production line, in which pattern distortions and performance deviations appear with process variations. The iAOI system was demonstrated in a module comprising a camera and lens, showing improved supportiveness for commercially available hardware. The iAOI procedure was realized in a serial workflow of image registration, threshold setting, image gradient, marker alignment, and geometric transformation; furthermore, five operations with numerous functions were prepared for image processing. In addition to the system and procedure, a graphical user interface (GUI) that displays sequential image operation results with analyzed characteristics was established for simplicity. To demonstrate its effectiveness, self-complementary Archimedean spiral antenna (SCASA) samples fabricated via standard PCB fabrication and intentional pattern distortions were demonstrated. The results indicated that, compared with other existing methods, the proposed iAOI system and procedure provide unified and standard operations with efficiency, which result in scientific and unambiguous judgments on pattern quality. Furthermore, we showed that when an appropriate artificial intelligence model is ready, the electromagnetic characteristic projection for SCASAs can be simply obtained through the GUI. The incorporation of automatic segmentation methodologies into dental X-ray images refined the paradigms of clinical diagnostics and therapeutic planning by facilitating meticulous, pixel-level articulation of both dental structures and proximate tissues. This underpins the pillars of early pathological detection and meticulous disease progression monitoring. Nonetheless, conventional segmentation frameworks often encounter significant setbacks attributable to the intrinsic limitations of X-ray imaging, including compromised image fidelity, obscured delineation of structural boundaries, and the intricate anatomical structures of dental constituents such as pulp, enamel, and dentin. To surmount these impediments, we propose the Deformable Convolution and Mamba Integration Network, an innovative 2D dental X-ray image segmentation architecture, which amalgamates a Coalescent Structural Deformable Encoder, a Cognitively-Optimized Semantic Enhance Module, and a Hierarchical Convergence Decoder. Collectively, these components bolster the management of multi-scale global features, fortify the stability of feature representation, and refine the amalgamation of feature vectors. A comparative assessment against 14 baselines underscores its efficacy, registering a 0.95% enhancement in the Dice Coefficient and a diminution of the 95th percentile Hausdorff Distance to 7.494.

This article presents a computer vision-based approach to switching electric locomotive power supplies as the vehicle approaches a railway neutral section. Neutral sections are defined as a phase break in which the objective is to separate two single-phase traction supplies on an overhead railway supply line. This separation prevents flashovers due to high voltages caused by the locomotives shorting both electrical phases. The typical system of switching traction supplies automatically employs the use of electro-mechanical relays and induction magnets. In this paper, an image classification approach is proposed to replace the conventional electro-mechanical system with two unique visual markers that represent the 'Open' and 'Close' signals to initiate the transition. When the computer vision model detects either marker, the vacuum circuit breakers inside the electrical locomotive will be triggered to their respective positions depending on the identified image. A Histogram of Oriented Gradient technique was implemented for feature extraction during the training phase and a Linear Support Vector Machine algorithm was trained for the target image classification. For the task of image segmentation, the Circular Hough Transform shape detection algorithm was employed to locate the markers in the captured images and provided cartesian plane coordinates for segmenting the Object of Interest. A signal marker classification accuracy of 94% with 75 objects per second was achieved using a Linear Support Vector Machine during the experimental testing phase.

Industrial automation in the manufacturing environment has revolutionized production and manufacturing in many industries, generating significant improvements in efficiency, quality, and process effectiveness. However, it has also posed challenges related to feedback in manufacturing environment monitoring systems, and increasing the effectiveness, productivity, and quality in industrial production. Feedback systems in the manufacturing environment are fundamental to industrial automation, which is why an application has been developed for the detection of elements in a printed circuit board manufacturing cell. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a crucial method for detecting damages in concrete structures. Structural damage can lead to functional changes, necessitating a range of damage detection techniques. Non-destructive methods enable the pinpointing of the location of the damage without causing harm to the structure, thus saving both time and money. Damaged structures exhibit alterations in their static and dynamic properties, primarily stemming from a reduction in stiffness. Monitoring these changes allows for the determination of the failure location and severity, facilitating timely repairs and reinforcement before further deterioration occurs. A systematic approach to damage detection and assessment is pivotal for fortifying structures and preventing structural collapse, which can result in both financial and human losses. In this study, we employ image processing to categorize damaged beams based on their crack growth and propagation patterns. We also utilize support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) methods to detect the type, location, and extent of failures in reinforced concrete beams. This paper describes the design, implementation, and usage of a Python package called Hyperspectral Python (HypPy). Proprietary software for processing hyperspectral images is expensive, and tools developed using these packages cannot be freely distributed. The idea of HypPy is to be able to process hyperspectral images using free and open-source software. HypPy was developed using Python and relies on the array-processing capabilities of packages like NumPy and SciPy. HypPy was designed with practical imaging spectrometry in mind and has implemented a number of novel ideas. To name a few of these ideas, HypPy has BandMath and SpectralMath tools for processing images and spectra using Python statements, can process spectral libraries as if they were images, and can address bands by wavelength rather than band number. The quality of images captured digitally or transmitted over networks is distorted by noise during the process. The current methods of image restoration can be ineffective in dealing with intricate noise patterns or may be slow or imprecise. This paper fills this gap by presenting a new second-order continuous-time dynamical system for denoising of images in image restoration. The approach used in this work poses the problem as a convex quadratic program that can, thus, be solved for optimality. The existence and uniqueness of a global solution are theoretically demonstrated, and the condition for the global strong convergence of the system's trajectory is provided. The method presented in this paper is shown to be useful in a number of experiments on image restoration. As for the performance, it is higher than that of other known algorithms, with an average SNR equal to 34.78 and a Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) of 0.959 for the reconstructed images. This work presents a novel approach to enhancing iris recognition systems through a two-module approach focusing on low-level image preprocessing techniques and advanced feature extraction. The primary contributions of this paper include: (i) the development of a robust preprocessing module utilizing the Canny algorithm for edge detection and the circle-based Hough transform for precise iris extraction, and (ii) the implementation of Binary Statistical Image Features (BSIF) with domain-specific filters trained on iris-specific data for improved biometric identification. By combining these advanced image preprocessing techniques, the proposed method addresses key challenges in iris recognition, such as occlusions, varying pigmentation, and textural diversity. Experimental results on the Human-inspired Domain-specific Binarized Image Features (HDBIF) Dataset, consisting of 1892 iris images, confirm the significant enhancements achieved. Moreover, this paper offers a comprehensive and reproducible research framework by providing source codes and access to the testing database through the Notre Dame University dataset website, thereby facilitating further application and study. Future research will focus on exploring adaptive algorithms and integrating machine learning techniques to improve performance across diverse and unpredictable real-world scenarios.
