Abstract

A comparative study has been made of the production of tetanus toxin according to two different methods: growth of the tetanus bacillus in jars, and growth in bottles. An important difference has been noted in the characteristics of the growth of Plectridium tetani when using one or the other of the two methods studied; in particular, the titer of the toxin produced in jars is much greater than that produced in bottles. Moreover, it has been noticed that the liberation into the surrounding medium of the toxin synthesized inside the bacterial cells during logarithmic growth is favored by a lysis of the cells which becomes manifest after 4–5 days of growth. This lysis occurs when the pH value of the culture reaches 7.5–7.6.

Abstract

1. 1. Only the threads of Mytilacea contain collagen. 2. 2. In Anomia, whose byssus is calcified, the acidic amino acids prevail over the basis ones. Glucosamine is very abundant. 3. 3. Great differences are found between the species with reduced or little functional byssus (Heterodonta) and the species with well-developed and efficient ones (Pteriomorpha). In the first group, histidine appears but at very low level whereas aspartic acid as well as sulphur amino acids are much more abundant than in the second group. Biochemical modification have gone with the development and the adaptation of the byssus.

49. Stresses and Deformations in a Cylindrical Shell Lying on a Continuous Rigid Support

Abstract

This paper develops a theoretical tool to predict rigorously the different types of contact between a cylindrical shell and a continuous rigid support for the complete range of pressure, vessel, and support parameters. The technique consists in comparing the actual angle of opening of the support with two limiting angles. These angles represent the upper bounds of the support for contact to take place on two lines only at the tips of the support or on three lines at the tips and at the center of the support. Using Flu¨gge’s equations and considering variations in the circumferential direction, it is shown that the type of contact depends on the internal pressure of the fluid, the geometrical parameters of the shell, and on the angle of opening of the support. The analysis also indicates that separation between the shell and the support is always to be expected in the circumferential direction. Results for the limiting angles of the support are presented graphically. The radial displacements and the circumferential bending moment are given for a specific example.
