This report presents a discussion of the effects of heat generation and volume change on the design and behavior of massive reinforced concrete elements and structures. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of restraint on cracking and the effects of controlled placing temperatures, concrete strength requirements, type and fineness of cement on volume change. Formulas are presented for determining the amounts of reinforcing steel needed to control the size and spacing of cracks to specified limits under varying conditions of restraint and volume change. Describes design and tests of a two-span micro- concrete cylindrical shell continuous over a flexible rib. Results in the elastic range are validated by static checks and compared for different degrees of restraint at the interior support. The shell is found to be more sensitive to interior support de-flections than a continuous beam. An unexpected region of longitudinal tensile forces is identified at the interior support. This report recommends and suggests design procedures to be used for precast concrete wall panels not indicated or given in ACI 318-63. The report covers the design of solid, ribbed, hollow core, and sandwich panels used as bearing and nonbearing panels loaded in the plane of the panel. Precast concrete wall panels used as deep beams and loaded in the plane of the panel as well as wall panels used as beams and slabs and loaded normal to the face of the panel are also included. Design conditions that must be considered for the connections and connection assemblies including materials are also recom-mended. An algorithm or computer method is presented for determining carry-over factors, absolute stiff-nesses, and fixed-end moments for concrete mem-bers with variable cross sections. Input for the algorithm consists of the moment of inertia, length, uniform loading, and concentrated loading for each segment along the member. The output can be used in standard moment distribution methods or slope deflection methods of analysis of elastic frames, as well as input to matrix analysis pro-grams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elastic properties of mass concrete were determined in tests on small unreinforced beams cast from mass mixes, made with and without pozzolan replacement of portland cement. The magnitude of stress-strain values, obtained near test failure, has design significance with regard to volume change induced in massive structures by temperature and other causes at locations of high restraint. Information obtained in this investigation was used to establish some of the temperature and construction control procedures for mass concrete in Dworshalc Dam, near Orofino, Idaho.
