Using configuration-dependent projectors we construct a generalized Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism for systems of many particles with holonomic constraints. The formalism in useful for treating problems in which the elimination of redundant co-ordinates is not convenient or the use of Lagrange multipliers is not suitable for the problem at hand. The method developed is a useful mathematical tool for treating collective processes in the many-body problem and can be the starting point for a quantization process for the many-body system restricted by holonomic constraints in configuration space. Si trova che il metodo qui svolto è uno strumento matematico utile per trattare processi comuni nel problema di molti corpi e può essere il punto d’avvio per un processo di quantizzazione relativo al sistema di molti corpi limitato da vincoli olonomi nello spazio delle configurazioni. Используя зависящие от конфигурации проекторы, мы конструируем обобщенный Лагранжиан-Гамильтонианный формализм для многочастичных систем с голономными связями. Предлиженный формализм используется для рассмотрения проблем, в которых выделение статически неопределимых координат не пригодно, или использование множителей Лагранжа не является приемлемым для рассматриваемой проблемы. Развитый метод представляет удобный математический аппарат для рассмотрения коллективных процессов в проблеме многих тел и может быть использован как основа для процесса квантования в многочастичной системе, на которую наложены голономные связи в конфигурационном пространстве.

Lymphocytes obtained from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) respond to the in vitro presence of cortisol by depressed incorporation of precursors into RNA and protein. The decreased incorporation of uridine into RNA is the sum of (1) an inhibition in the synthesis of RNA and (2) an enhanced destruction of newly synthesized RNA. Whereas cortisol was not dependent upon plasma for the manifestation of the above effects, the presence of plasma was an absolute requirement in order for cortisol to have an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of protein. A comparison of leukemic and normal lymphocytes demonstrated that the magnitude of inhibition of precursors into RNA and protein was greater in leukemic cells. Because it is believed that the plasma factor required is transcortin, determination of transcortin levels by cortisolbinding gel filtration technics were performed. These indicated that transcortin levels of CLL plasma were about 50 per cent lower than that of the normal. Consequently, further experiments involving type-specific plasma substitutions were performed. The results obtained from these experiments indicated that the magnitude of the effect of cortisol on the synthesis of lymphocyte protein was directly related to the transcortin level of the plasma employed.

The in vitro effects of sterols, cholesterol and 3-methyl cholanthrene and steroids, cortisol, prednisolone and testosterone on protein synthesis in separate popultions of human lymphocytes and leukocytes has been investigated. It has been shown that all agents used result in the inhibition of protein synthesis under these conditions. It has also been shown that the inhibitory mechanism of the steroid hormones requires the presence of plasma, presumably as a protein binding factor in order to achieve its effect. The sterol, cholesterol and 3-methyl cholanthrene, in the absence of plasma, still inhibit amino acid incorporation. However, in the case of cholesterol, the magnitude of inhibition is lower than that observed in the presence of plasma, perhaps indicating a partial plasma dependence. The results presented therefore support the hypothesis that the inhibition of lymphocyte protein synthesis by steroid hormones occurs only when the steroid is bound to a plasma protein. The physiologic role of the plasma protein-cortisol complex and its relation to the condition of lymphopenia in man is discussed.

The energies and relative intensities of the γ-radiation following the decay of the 4.45 min isomer of 118ln have been measured using a Ge(Li) detector. A total of sixteen γ-rays was observed of which six for the first time. A decay scheme ist presented and discussed; it incorporates fifteen of the observed transitions.

We have detected and localized in situlymphocyte proteins with antigenic determinants similar to those of the cortisol-binding globulin of human plasma. All lymphocyte fractions, obtained by differential centrifugation and ammonium sulfate fractionations exhibited cortisol-binding capacities and were recognized by transcortin-specific antibody. Inasmuch as the 40 to 65% ammonium sulfate fraction of the 105,000 xglymphocyte cytosol accounted for over 90% of the total binding capacity of the cell, this fraction was further purified by the procedure employed for the purification of plasma transcortin. These procedures yielded a protein with about 20% the cortisol-binding capacity of transcortin, migrated more rapidly than transcortin in disc acrylamide electrophoretic systems, and formed a line of identity with transcortin when treated with transcortin-specific antibody. Fluorescein-labeled transcortin antibody applied to sectioned lymphocytes showed almost exclusive cytoplasmic localization of transcortin-like protein. These results show for the first time the existence of cortisol-binding proteins within the human lymphocyte antigenically identical with transcortin.

The diffraction of the principal mode at the open end of a semi-infinite parallel-plate waveguide terminated by an infinite plane flange (double-wedge) is studied in the interval 0.1=ka=1.7, where k is the wave number and 2a is the guide width. The evanescent-mode correction to the reflection amplitude and the amplitudes of the evanescent modes are computed by three different approximation methods. The agreement among these methods in the considered interval is good. The evanescent-mode correction to the reflection coefficient is small, but the correction to the phase is quite large, attaining values of the order of 10% for ka ~1.7. The domain of applicability of the various methods is discussed.

Previous studies by us indicated, via indirect means, that cortisol decreased the incorporation of leucine into the total protein of cultured human neutrophils. These experiments have been repeated, employing autoradiographic procedures, in order to corroborate our previous observations as well as to obtain information on the possible effect of cortisol on the incorporation of uridine into neutrophil RNA. The results presented suggest that cortisol promotes a decrease in the incorporation of uridine into human neutrophil nuclear and cytoplasmic RNA, whereas, only the synthesis of nuclear protein appears affected. A correlation of these results to the neutrocytosis promoted by the in vitroadministration of cortisol to humans is made and discussed.

After injection of 51Cr-labelled platelets, dogs were cooled down to 20 °C and rewarmed to 36 °C. Radioactivity increased over the hepatic area during cooling, to decrease again during rewarming. It increased continuously during the observation period over the splenic area. The inverse symmetry of the curves representing the radioactivity measured over the liver and in the peripheral blood together with the fact that splenectomy did not alter significantly the thrombocytopenia observed, strongly suggests that in the dog the liver is the main organ responsible for platelet sequestration during hypothermia.

The y-transitions in 79Se following the decay of 79As were investigated with a Ge(Li) detector. Six previously unreported γ-transitions were observed and energy and intensity measurements on eleven γ-rays are reported. A new decay scheme is proposed which incorporates all the observed γ-rays. Results concerning the decay schemes of some isotopes of selenium (81 and 73) are also presented.

A new acaricide, American Cyanamid AC 84,633 (Imidocarbonic acid, (4-chloro-o-tolyl)-dithio-, cyclic methylene ester) inhibited oviposition and reduced egg hatchability in in vitro tests with the southern cattle tick. Unfed larvae were paralyzed but not killed by concentrations up to 64000 ppm. In 2 experiments conducted on stalled cattle experimentally infested with either an organophosphate-susceptible or resistant strain of B. microplus, minimum control was 99.6 and 99.8%, respectively, from spray concentrations of 454 and 500 ppm of AC 84,633. Cattle with heavy experimental infestations were maintained under field conditions after a single spray or dip treatment. From days 2–21, mean tick mortality was 92.4% on cattle sprayed with 500 ppm and 95.7% on cattle dipped with 464 ppm. From 5–21 days, mean tick control was 97.7 and 99.7% for sprayed and dipped cattle, respectively. The foregoing results were confirmed during large-scale dipping trials on farms with histories of difficult tick control.

TO THE EDITOR: —I have found the article by Drs. Monteith and Clock, entitled "The Treatment of Burns with Normal Horse Serum" (The Journal, April 6, p. 1173), to be extremely interesting as it represents new evidence against the improper use of antiseptics still advocated by many practitioners.In regard to the originality of the horse serum method, however, I should like to state that since 1918 we have been using it consistently in all cases of atonic ulcers, phagedenic ulcers, burns, cuts and ulcus molle, always with the most encouraging results, and that this method has since become rather generalized in this section of Brazil. In the Memorias do Instituto Butantan (part 2 1, 1918-1919) I published the final results of my own observations on the application of dried horse serum (which I think for obvious reasons to be superior to liquid serum) to ulcerations in general.
