Abstract

Single administration of hypnotics in the morning or in the evening induces no changes in the mitotic activity of the cornea, skin and crypts of the small intestine. Prolonged continuous drug-induced sleep for a period of 10–11 hours causes a rise of the mitotic activity in the cornea, slightly increases the mitotic activity in the ear epidermis, but leaves it unchanged in the crypts of the small intestine. The rise of mitotic activity in the corneal epithelium depends on the profoundness of the animal's sleep.

Abstract

Mitotic activity and glycogen content in the liver of white rats was measured one h after feeding at 10 a.m. or 10 p.m. after a 24-h fast. Irrespective of the time at which the rat was fed the maximal mitotic activity was found to occur between 6 and 8 a.m., and the minimal rate during the greater part of the 24 h. When the animals were fed in the morning the glycogen content rose gradually, reaching a maximum at a period when mitotic activity was minimal. With an evening feed the highest glycogen content occurred at 6 a.m., at the period of maximum mitotic rate. Subsequently both the number of mitoses and the glycogen content decreased.

Abstract

The reaction of the 3-acetate of the 20-ketal of 16α,17α-oxido-Δ5-pregnenol-3β-one-20 with methylmagnesium iodide and subsequent hydrolysis of the reaction product yielded 16β-methyl-Δ5-pregnenediol-3β −17α-one −20. 18-Nor-17β-methyl-17-iso-Δ5.11-pregnadienediol-3β,16β-one-20 was formed as a by-product.
